We were just passing through after a long, weekend trip through Maine, NH, & Vermont before returning to NYC. This was our first trip through this part of the NE and I have to say that we were pleasantly surprised to find such a delightful, little country diner, full of warmth, and character. We both ordered a scrumptious breakfast with home-cooked (perfectly to our request) eggs, bacon, sausage & pancake with Maple Syrup. The price was more than reasonable & the service was superb. The place was bustling with the chatter of small-town folk, who seemed to love it there. Thanks Country Girl Diner for making another memorable experience for us on our trip!

Seemed like small portions when it came out, but filled us all up. They were quick to refill drinks and when my daughter needed two more chicken fingers, they took care of it. The bacon was unreal!!!

Came to this diner last winter with my fiancé and we loved it then. Here again now and the staff and food are even better than we remember. So friendly and welcoming.

Four Star Food - but, for the price, and the fact that they charged extra for Vermont Maple Syrup (in VT, for crying out loud) makes this place a 3 star joint. Food was tasty, our servers were friendly and attentive. I would give this place another chance - but on principal, I will not order anything that requires maple syrup - it really got under my skin that I had to pay extra for it at this place. Also - a heads up - a Cash Only place!

'was there today. Extremely slow service (over 15 minutes to place an order) and disappointing food - the "okemo omelet" had no flavor , and the home fries (which were good) arrived 5 minutes after the meal was served - sigh. Only the ambiance of an old fashion diner was the plus.

Great food, great people! Would eat there every day if I had little concern with my weight. And great coffee too!

FYI....they only take CASH. There is an ATM in the diner though so we used that. This little roadside diner was a sweet surprise on our way back home from a few nights away near Ludlow. Ok granted it's not The Ritz but honestly I hate The Ritz anyway. What you're getting is local hospitality (the woman waiting on everyone there in the morning was sweet, friendly, & very patient) and locals who talk to you like you go there every day. The food was good...I had a grilled Raspberry muffin (ok that was SUPER good) with just basic oatmeal, coffee, & a small OJ. Hubby had an omelette of sausage, bacon, peppers, onions, & cheese & coffee...he said his breakfast was awesome and it was a pretty big omelette. Total for all of it was around $23. I only wish they offered skim milk....creamer and regular milk are way too heavy for alot of people. However, local maple syrup for the oatmeal was a great addition. Would definitely go back if we were in the area.

We were visiting for the fall colors and fell in love with Country Girl Diner. It is the perfect example of a classic New England Diner. Their breakfast; pulled pork hash, biscuits and gravy, blueberry pancakes were fantastic. The perfect comfort food! The staff was warm, friendly, funny and knew everyone by name. This small diner was some of the best meals we ate in Vermont.

Good food. I wouldn't say it's cheap though. I got a foot long hot dog with bacon and cheddar and fries for 6, 7 or maybe 8 bucks. Even if it was $5, that's pretty expensive! I went back the next day for breakfast...solid! Blueberry pancakes were massive, and LOADED with blueberries and I could barely finish them (3). But again, it's pretty pricey for "country living" IMHO. AND...$1.25 for an ounce of Vermont maple syrup?! I don't understand this one bit. I was in LI at a diner that charged $3.25 for mini-pitcher or creamer of "Vermont Gold" (I'm guessing it's just real maple syrup not brand specific, I dunno). I understand charging extra for quality stuff, but charging extra for so little??? AND I'm in Vermont where the stuff comes from???

I don't see this establishment being a five-star restaurant, but it certainly deserves four stars in our opinion. The apple-cinnamon pancake ($3.95) with real Vermont maple syrup and butter was delicious, and the egg sandwich with Vermont cheese also was very very good ($3.95.) You practically would pay that much for a nuked mediocre Egg McMuffin in a restaurant totally lacking in character. The Country Girl is similar to an old train dining car, very nice, and clean. The waitress was friendly and accommodating. We would go back in a flash.

Great old fashioned diner. After driving around randomly after journeying through the Vermont Country Store, we needed somewhere that had good food at reasonable prices. After struggling to find a place that served good food, yet alone food, we decided to turn back. At the last moment, we saw this diner. It was about 30 minutes before closing time, so I have no idea about breakfast. Located in an old train car (that we found out from the waitress was driven from I think New York, which was originally an old diner...) Service is extremely friendly, but when you are the only people in there and it is five minutes before closing, what else do you expect? The prices are cheap to reasonably cheap. Impressive selection of burgers and sandwiches. I got the make-it-yourself burger, so I got it with lettuce, mushrooms, and ketchup with french fries. For a train car, this place can cook. Excellent sear on the burger. Fresh greens and fungi. A large burger, too. Fries were good, but too greasy. Impressive adventure and possibly coming back a second time.

We stopped in for breakfast this morning, passing through from MA on our way to no place particular. The first thing that struck us upon walking in was the sign that politely requests guests to discuss any dissatisfaction with them in person, giving them a chance to rectify, before posting online. I have to respect a business that says hey, we realize we may not be perfect all the time, but give us the chance to fix it before you take us out at the knees, anonymously no less. The service was phenomenal. Our server's name was Carrie, and so is mine, so I knew she had to be amazing! The food was great. The bacon was thick slices, not the anemic shriveled up strips I've seen at other places. We watched a man unloading loaves of bread from his unmarked white van in the parking lot, so we knew the food was coming in local. The eggs were obviously fresh, with bright yellow yolks. The home fries were crispy and delicious. I find diner home fries hit or miss, frequently taste like they were previously frozen. None of that here. The breakfast was delicious, the coffee was good, and the service excellent. We just wish there was someplace comparable close to home.. We both got more food than we could finish, with coffee, all for about $15. We felt the prices were more than reasonable. We would absolutely go to the Country Girl again.

Sweet baby Jesus! The Country Girl Diner is back!!! I began enjoying this authentic New England diner many years ago, back in the 1980's shortly after my parents bought a ski home on Okemo. As the CGD is located right on 103, it meant we passed it every Friday night and Sunday afternoon as we traveled to and fro from MA. It was everything you could want out of a no-frills diner; amazing home made soups, awesome bacon cheeseburgers, incredible meatloaf. Before all the high speed quads, $21 Kobe beef burgers in the lodges, and terrain parks littered with knuckle draggers and twin tippers...back when a "hot dog" course sat where the Sugarhouse mid-mountain lodge now sits...there was (Delaney's) Country Girl Diner. Passing that small wonder meant one of two things...a weekend full of skiing or five days back in the "flatlands" waiting for the next weekend. Then something happened...the Country Girl inhaled her last breath... Now forgive me for not remembering exactly when / how things started going downhill...my memory isn't what it used to be (littering and...). I can't remember if the lights just weren't on after one slow summer, or if we actually witnessed first hand the descent into over-priced, low quality food...but it happened, and it lasted for a long while...so long that I'd written off the CGD as a distant memory...much like the old Sachem double chair coming out of its red barn. One test that I've always applied to any restaurant up in that area of VT is the "trust the green plates" test. If locals aren't supporting it, it's for a good reason, and the joint will most likely not be around too long. Fast forward to the present. I'm now in my 30's, own my own home, and have since started a successful Ski & Gun club in Andover, VT that finds my friends and I up in the area for deer season. So...when I started to notice the lights on, and a busy parking lot, much of which was taken up by locals, I got a chill down my back. My buddy suggested we give it a try instead of the always solid Hatchery further up the road in Ludlow. I was hesitant at first, but decided to adhere to my rule. We pulled up and their lot was full of locals...maybe I was in for a surprise?! Oh yes I was!! Your correspondent is here to report that the COUNTRY GIRL DINER IS INDEED BACK! Road riding that morning had my stomach quaking for a hearty breakfast and I was not disappointed. 2 eggs over easy, rye toast, well done homefries and some delicious homemade Corned Beef Hash. I love hash, even more so when it's done well...this was done better than well! The coffee was hot and fresh, the ice-waters served in large Mason jars, and the service as friendly as I remember as a rosy-cheeked lil whippersnapper! I'm so happy that someone who understands what a true, old-school VT diner is...and isn't...came along to take over control of this once local gem. If things keep going the way they are, anyone passing through Chester, VT via 103 now has a fantastic spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner....diner style!

Best waffles. Thanks to other reviews we went for breakfast and we agree with everyone. If you are anywhere near them make the trip. Cash only or local check just the way a diner should be. Bummed they didn't have the hash since it wasn't Sunday cannot wait to go back.

My daughter and I stopped here on our way to Killington this weekend for breakfast. I love to stop memorable places like this to make the trip special, and I had eaten here once before about 5 years ago and had a positive experience. When we arrived, apparently we were part of a "rush": the waitress informed us that the entire place filled up in the 10 minutes before we got there. No worries: we were able to get a couple of seats at the counter. The waitress apologized that it might take awhile because the kitchen was now backed up, but we didn't mind. She kept the coffee and the ice water flowing while managing her half of the full restaurant, and we spent the time enjoying the homey atmosphere of the vintage diner while we had a nice conversation. My daughter decided to try the cinnamon and apple slice pancake, and I had the apple cider french toast. Both were excellent (my 17 year old daughter claimed it was the best pancake she's ever had!), and they were served with delicious VT maple syrup. Prices were very reasonable, and despite the crowd they got our food to us in a reasonable amount of time and had us back on the road to enjoy the day on the slopes. If you want a good, solid, creatively prepared breakfast without pretension and enjoy the atmosphere of an antique diner, it's a great place to stop. We'll remember it for a long time, and we look forward to returning next time we're in the area.

Yummy country diner This was a fun breakfast. The waitress was sweet and the food was yummy! I had an omelet and my friends had waffles and pancakes. This is a great little place to relax, do coffee and eat yummy. Only one thing keeps this from a five star diner, the prices. They have a sign up that says if you don't like something let them know rather than write it on Yelp. I tried to find a website for them and couldn't. Sorry Country Girl but I gotta be honest!

Wow. Wow, wow, wow. We were in the area for vacation for a week with friends and hit this place multiple times for breakfast. Once for lunch. The servers were very friendly, and it felt like a place where everyone had known you for a long time (even if they hadn't). The food was great- breakfast was really outstanding. Ample portions and just great all around. The home fries were outstanding as was the sausage. Forget about anemic little frozen sausages if you order sausage links. I don't know when we'll be back in the area, but when we are, we'll be sure to return to the Country Girl.

Yum Yum Yum. Pancakes are huge and fluffy and tasty. Its a no frills place but the breakfast is so good it keeps me coming back. And the staff is super friendly.

We were hungry and it was 2.15pm. Not the time to be looking for something to eat on the beautiful, but quiet Vermont country roads. We drove by, stopped, checked yelp, went back and had a look. It looked very cute so we went in. The service was great, very friendly and helpful. They let me order half a sandwich and a cup of soup, the soup was corn and we were surrounded by farms selling summer corn I was sure it would be fresh and delicious. It wasn't. It seemed the corn was frozen and the tomatoes were from a can. Really disappointing as it would be so easy to get delicious farm-fresh ingredients there. My husband's burger was ok, he said. And my half BLT was good but nothing different or particularly note-worthy.

I was visiting family in VT, and stopped in at this diner. I like small and unique places, and I had high hopes. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed, and did not have nearly the experience the other reviewers had! I ordered the Asian vegetable bowl, something I wouldn't expect a diner to have. The portion was large, but the vegetables were overcooked. My husband had the tuna salad, and it was good. The service however, was lacking. Our drinks were not refilled the entire time we were there, probably because the waitresses were too busy looking at something on an iphone and chatting. We got dessert for everyone (kids, too), and while the ice cream was good, we had to eat it with a knife because the waitress brought two spoons for four bowls of ice cream. And, of course, she didn't even notice as she was busy chatting. The worst thing was the restroom. Right under the "Employees must wash hands" sign was an empty bottle of soap. No soap in the restroom? Ick. I'm surprised to see the other great reviews, maybe we went on a bad day? At any rate, I wouldn't recommend it.

How nice to find a friendly place to stop and have breakfast when you are traveling away from home. My wife and I were traveling through and found your restaurant by chance. How nice to stop in at a local venue and not feel like the outsiders. Of course, we are the outsiders, but we never felt that way as we chatted with Carrie and everyone else in the restaurant. We both ordered breakfasts and --- farm eggs, great; the breads (toast) thick, fresh; bacon, thicker sliced and better than the city; homefries, not sure what they seasoned them with, but they were great; coffee, kept being refilled without asking. If this place was nearby, we could skip our usual stops and go here for breakfasts. Thanks! We'll stop in again!

I live locally in Chester, and am so happy that Kate and Thom took over the diner in July of 2011. It's quickly become the heart of the community and the quality if the food can't be beat. They have the best hamburger around... Fresh made patties and hand cut French fries. All for under $10 and I have one at least once a week! Their breakfast is terrific, service is friendly and quick. The place is spotless and you will even find nice soap in the bathrooms. Definitely worth a try!

I first visited just after the new owners took over in 2011. They had a few typical start up glitches then, but now they are running like a well-oiled machine! Very friendly service and great food. Great ambiance and a fun mixture of regulars and tourists. I love the omelettes and home fries!

I'm a sucker for diners so when we saw the Country Girl, we had to stop. It's a classic diner car but boy does it need a scrubbin. Looks like this place hasn't been reviewed in quite some time. I'm not sure if it traded hands or what but it could be so much more. We got simple diner food - hot dog which was barely luke warm on a stale bun with soggy fried potato slices and a grilled ham and vermont cheddar with potato chips. We were surprised that the ham was real sliced country ham but the bread was toasted and not grilled. I hope the owners clean this place up and make it a real diner destination or sell it to someone who will.

Great place for breakfast -- great food, really nice waitstaff, colorful locals, and if you like diners, design-wise this is one of the nicest I've seen; it's the real thing and they haven't ruined it! Definitely recommend!

the food at this diner is better than you'd ever expect from a place in the middle of nowhere in VT. my friend and i traveled over 30 minutes to get to this place and it was worth every minute. we loved it so much we bought Country Girl Diner mugs to take with us :)

My husband and I stopped here for breakfast this past Saturday. The waitress was so nice. I ordered a bagel sandwich which was delicious. Another very good diner. The specials are good and hand cut fries are real good. We have stopped here before when passing through Chester and it was very good 3 years ago and still great food.

Nicely renovated while keeping the old style diner charm intact. As of right now diner is open for breakfast and lunch only. I met with several friends this morning for breakfast. I opted for the breakfast burrito which was delicious.....ham, eggs, cheese & salsa in a warm wrap. One of my friends had a waffle the size of a small car tire but much tastier. Service was a little slow but given the fact the place only opened 2 weeks ago and the staff is still on a learning curve, I can live with it. Besides, what the staff lacks in hustle they more than make up for with their congeniality. 4 person booths along one side of the diner plus counter seating. Not really set up to accommodate a group of more than 4 people who wish to share a table. My friends sat in a booth, I sat at counter in a sort of side-saddle position so that I could share in the conversation. Looking forward to checking the progress these folks are making in a couple of weeks.

Stopped here today, after foliage season and were happy with our choice. New owners have really cleaned this place up and it shows. Even the bathroom was clean. (duh) DH ordered the roast beef sandwich on rye. It came out nice and rare, stacked high. Very tasty, he said. I had the grilled cheese sandwich which was good but not awesome. The bread could have been grilled a bit more and the combination of swiss and cheddar would be better if they just left off the swiss. We both had the famous tomato corn chowder. It was good but unimpressive........like thin tomato soup with a few kernels of corn thrown in. We like corn chowder thick and creamy but to each his own. Service was really excellent.......Kate, the owner was friendly, informative and right on the ball. All in all, we would go back. And we wish them success in their new venture.

We loved this place. The burgers are OK. The fish and chips were great (a single huge piece of fish, freshly battered). The lasagna was great as well. The wait staff is friendly, as are the locals filling up the place.

this place is a 1950's diner - all shiny and wonderful. after you drive thru Chester (go slow. they Very Much Frown on going above the speed limit here) and it is on the right. make sure you stop here. they have a Wonderful menu. and i won't even add the 'for a diner'. it was hard to decide what to get but i was really excited that mom got the salmon sandwich with the wasabi sauce. i asked for more on the side so i could dip my food in it. they also advertise the best custards in the state (or something grand like that) so we had to try one. and yep. it was yummy. (of course i have not had Any other custards in VT so who am i to deny them that status?) the prices were completely reasonable and the food was worth going back for. so if you are ever in the area, i suggest you go out of your way to try it out. yum.

Classic Worcester diner that's been really well maintained. That in of itself is a treat for this diner-lover. It's also an absolutely beautiful drive to get up there from Brattleboro. But best of all- this place has great food. Plenty of diners cut corners and get away with it because people generally lower their expectations for the diner experience. But this grub is good, period. Home cookin' at a great price, and often with an unexpected twist. My personal favorite would have to be the sweet potato steak fries. Mmmhmmm.

    (5)
  • jennifer k.

Service (the one waitress/cashier) is great and all, but the grub is just not that great. Had sweet potato fries - a bit hard like wasn't cooked enough. Grilled ham & cheese - your sandwich looks like a piece of ham was slabbed in between pieces of bread and then just cut in half. Hot dogs - OK. Out of everything, the hot dogs were the best, so that tells you something. Also, you would think this simple order would have taken very little time, but you would be wrong. Waited a little over half an hour after ordering for food to come out.

For lovers of the diner experience, Country Girl Diner delivers. A friend of mine (Phil C.) from work turned me on to this gem nearly 15 years ago and during my time living in Chester, the Country Girl Diner was visited weekly (whether for breakfast or lunch). Site of my first attempt at liking tripe (Pickled tripe, at that), I knew that the Country Girl was the very sort of salt-of-the-earth Diner that would put the good stuff on the specials menu. Folks zipping by on 11 can trust this place to offer up good and classic diner menu items.

Work took me up in this area for the week. In 3 days I have had a decent breakfast and 3 really good lunches here. And it's only Wednesday. This goes on top of the really good lunch I had here another time. Old style diner with very friendly staff.

Love this little place. Consistently good breakfast, lively atmosphere and great service. Never disappointed with my visits to Country Girl Diner! My only advice to them would be not to their raise prices - they are just about at the threshold of being slightly pricey for a VT diner. Keep up the good work!

Small old fashion Diner. Great stop before the mountains. Our waitress was very very friendly and the food was great. My daughter really enjoyed her Belgium waffle and I enjoyed the black bean and egg/cheese plate (can't remember the mountain name it was named after). The muffin we all shared was very good (cranberry orange). The crispy homefries were a good side add on.

  • Steven H.

Don't let the old ramshackle appearance or small size dissuade you. The Country Girl exceeds expectations with friendly, country service and better than average food. The smaller than usual diner menu is a reflection of their use of fresh ingredients. This will be one of our regular stops on our way up to Okemo.

I've only been in once and it was forgettable. It wasn't great food and I felt over priced for the quality. I wasn't nuts about the space or the staff but I have plenty of friends that love the place so I'm not ready to throw in the towel.

these 2 breakfast snobs loved our breakfast at the Country Girl Diner!! Very friendly service. Being from out of town, it was a fun and delcious way to start the day, eating breakfast with the locals. Had the special, an egg sandwich with bacon and cheese on homemade bisquit, added homefries and then shared a blueberry pancake (enormous!) with my husband, who had eggs and cornbeef hash and marble rye toast. Everything was scrumptious!

Very small, classic silver small town diner. Popular spot, we had to wait about 20 minutes to be seated. There was one waitress working just about the entire space. She was great and very kind to our party. We ordered many different plates, but the best one was the savory pancake. It was about a foot in diameter, and filled with ham and scallions. It was very delicious. Also, the Cinnabon French toast was great. Seemed like just about everything was satisfactory and everyone enjoyed their meals. Eat it!

Great little diner! Good breakfast! Friendly staff! Only downfall it's very small and gets very loud and noisy. But the food is great and can't beat the prices! Get the sausage links as I was told to get them, and it did not disappoint!!! Overall great little place in the amazing town of Chester, VT.

This is a fantastic little diner. My family and I stopped in here for dinner on a Friday night as we drove from Albany to New Hampshire. And we were lucky it was Friday, because that's the only night they have dinner offerings on their Friday night specials. Our large group of six saddled up to the counter in this packed diner and were promptly offered menus and had our drink orders taken. For meals, several folks opted for the dinner specials--including two orders of their amazing looking rack of ribs and an order of their baked fish--while the rest of us opted for either soup and sandwich combos or the cheese steak. I had the cheese steak, and it was amazing. A perfect blend of steak, onions, peppers, and cheese on a hoagie roll with a side of delicious fries. It was amazing. I also got to try the ribs, which my father orders, and they were fantastic. Everyone else loved their food as well - my sister in law raved about her fish, in particular. Service was outstanding - our waitress was friendly and engaging and never let our drinks run dry. She checked in frequently to see if we were doing ok. It's obvious just from watching the folks at work here that this is a great place to work--everyone seemed happy to be there, and it really came through in the great service we were provided. I also liked that the staff knew the names of many of the patrons who walked in the door - clearly this is a popular locals hangout. Honestly, my only regret is that we were so full after dinner that we couldn't try any of the outstanding looking pies they had on offer. All in all, this was a great find, and I highly encourage anyone passing through the area to stop in and try out the Country Girl Diner.

Just what a diner should be. Snug, warm, familiar, serving up filling standards with a comforting practiced hand. Sometimes a harried mommy just craves the kind of nurturing service an expert diner waitress offers. :) The Summit Sandwich was exactly right and I was off and running with a full tank of delicious.

Went to the Country Girl today. Visiting the diner is a special with tradition with a few friends who come up regularly to ski in the area. The food is good and simple (solid burger, French fries made from real potato, fresh coffee) and one couldn't ask for anything more fitting to eat after a long day of cross country skiing. There was pie on offer as well- but I hit capacity. The proprietors, Tom and Kate, are also delightful and warm. Kate told us the story of how she first dreamed of running the place when she was nine and would go to the diner as a treat with her grandpa. She and her husband finally bought and renovated the place a few years ago. What a story of connection to a community and willingness to invest. This is the kind of place that makes me want to move to Vermont. I could eat pancakes here every morning, shoot the breeze, and be happy.
