MacLaomainn’s Scottish Pub

Excellent all around. I think I've eaten here 6-7 times when visiting town, and always happy with the food and beer. My kids like the nachos, chili, and baked potatoes. Staff is friendly, easy parking, good desserts.
Went a couple months ago. Awesome place. Had an incredible meat pie and my wife had bangers and mash. Friendly bartender and good Scottish beer selection.
We have been going to this place for years, everytime we head to VT. The food is fantastic in my opinion and my personal favorite is the chicken and mushroom puff pastry pie. Pros: Great quality food, inexpensive, unique atmosphere and menu. A great scottish sampling on the menu. Our server even wore his kilt. Though this is a pub, it is very family friendly. My kids love the angus burger and grill cheese. They also decorate for the holidays and for halloween have a very fun atmosphere. Cons: I wish I lived closer. Thats it, I love this place!

Whether it's cozying up by the fireplace in the winter or soaking up the sun on the deck in the summer, The Stone Hearth Inn is amazing! I've only been with my husband and the atmosphere is so relaxing and romantic. The food is delicious and there are always new things to try! I am vegetarian and my husband is not but we both always find something we love. To top it off the staff are so incredibly friendly, you really couldn't ask for more!!
Great atmosphere and beer. Great grass fed beef burgers but terrible terrible fish. Service was very nice and chatty but our waitress forgot some drink and sides orders
They make good steak, good rolls. Everything is done perfectly! Mondays are Thai nights. I had their brownie with ice cream on top, and its delicious. I suggest to call for reservations first.

We were just passing through after a long, weekend trip through Maine, NH, & Vermont before returning to NYC. This was our first trip through this part of the NE and I have to say that we were pleasantly surprised to find such a delightful, little country diner, full of warmth, and character. We both ordered a scrumptious breakfast with home-cooked (perfectly to our request) eggs, bacon, sausage & pancake with Maple Syrup. The price was more than reasonable & the service was superb. The place was bustling with the chatter of small-town folk, who seemed to love it there. Thanks Country Girl Diner for making another memorable experience for us on our trip!
Seemed like small portions when it came out, but filled us all up. They were quick to refill drinks and when my daughter needed two more chicken fingers, they took care of it. The bacon was unreal!!!
Came to this diner last winter with my fiancé and we loved it then. Here again now and the staff and food are even better than we remember. So friendly and welcoming.

Very nice quaint old house. The room was comfy. The linens on the bed were great and that says a lot as I am used to flannel sheets. The bathroom was shared and was clean. The Buttermilk pancakes for breakfast were yummy and the owner was very nice. We will return.

Baba A Louis Bakery

RR 11
Chester, 05143
Reviews:
It's been nearly 10 years since I've moved away from Chester. When I think back upon the times in this great village, Baba-a-Louis' Bakery is one of the many great memories. Walking down to the bakery from Dodge Road (a healthy stroll), we'd enjoy weekly pizza nights. This was also a very convenient and attractive place for lunch as well, since I worked a short distance away. As striking as many of the products is the building and decor itself. I see a few negative reviews of this fine establishment on Yelp but I'd encourage the rest of you to give it a try. If you're from Chester or the immediate environs, then you already know the deal - but if you're a flatlander (like myself) speeding by on 11 (slow down, by the way...) then I'd really recommend you stop and appreciate this very unique place. (Oh, and if you're coming from the interstate and are heading up 103 - do yourself a favor and go straight; take the mile detour. Trust me). note - if you're expecting a french baguette (i.e., what is intended to resemble as closely as possible an authentic french baguette) then know in advance that this sourdough version does not aim to replicate the baguette from the old country. Louis' version is his own interpretation of the Vermonter baguette!
Disappointing. Unfulfilled Potential. In 2014, while staying at Jackson Gore in Ludlow, VT and looking for the ultimate Vermont bakery experience, I researched bakeries and Baba A Louis came up with high ratings. So a road trip was order down to Chester. We passed Caste Pointe along the way, which looks like an excellent spot for dinner. Arriving at Baba A Louis, the place had character, but very limited offerings for breakfast. No muffins, no Danish, no Donuts. Wait, was I at a bakery? Was there a hidden back room I was missing? We kept looking for more. We left with some bread and an ok brownie. This was certainly not the Vermont bakery experience I had read about online. This was no Bova's from Little Italy in Boston.
Have been going to southern Vermont for over thirty years. Have passed Baba's bakery for as many years also. One day my wife and decided to stop by. As we walked in the greeting was as warm as an Antarctic summer or a vat of liquid nitrogen. The place was pretty much empty. Tried the various breads - dense, hard, dry, flavorless. If you ever had the good fortune of having styrofoam in your mouth you've just had a taste of the bread. Don't bother.

Fullerton Inn

40 The Common
Chester, 05143
Reviews:
Cute little inn/old hotel located right in Chester, VT. We stayed here for easy access to skiing up in Ludlow...only about a 20 minute drive. They have two fireplaces always going in the main lobby and the bar area which makes it quite cozy! Rooms are all decorated in different theme/color combos which make it feel very much like a Bed & Breakfast but each room also has its' own bathroom! Free continental breakfast in the morning offered fruit, yogurt, pastries, cereals, coffee, tea, juice and also included a waffle maker and they had REAL Vermont maple syrup! We did not try the main dining options at the Fullerton but heard great things from other people that stayed here! We spent the end of every night in the bar by the fire enjoying some of the great Vermont beers they had on tap and playing cards. There is also a small library in the main lobby with various board games you could take out to play. There is also a fun 'giant' checkers table in the lobby! Overall we had a really great stay and it was a great price for a nice, comfortable experience. Would absolutely recommend it and stay here again!
Pricey, small portions. Food was so-so. They wouldn't count the flight of beers we had towards the restaurant.com coupon, and we were off by $1.34 and had to buy an overpriced dessert for six bucks. The waitress pointed to the coupon where it allegedly said alcohol didn't count, and I should have paid attention, because when I got home I purchased another certificate and it didn't say anything about alcoholic beverages not counting as part of the meal. Luckily, I was able to exchange the certificate for a better establishment.
Beautiful place to stay when you need to get away from realities of life! There are no TV's, but that is a GOOD thing! It allows you to connect with the person you're with and gives you a break from automatically turning the TV on when you walk in the room. The staff is so friendly and the continental breakfast is wonderful. My husband and I loved walking to the little shops around the Inn and we enjoyed dinner at their restaurant. Sitting in the beautiful lobby after dinner with a cup of hot cocoa was the best feeling. I would definitely recommend this place to friends and family!
