My friend told me about this place, but he couldn't remember the name, only that "they give you huge slices of whatever bread you want to sample, and they have butter and honey there for you, and the bread is really, really good, and the place isn't exactly downtown". After some yelp research, I was excited to have found it, and it lived up to the hype and then some. I tried a free sample of the challah and it was spectacular. The other choices that day looked amazing too---a cinnamon swirl bread, something with blueberries, plus the regulars (white, wheat, etc.), scones, and cookies (there were big cookie samples too! Oatmeal chocolate chip the day I went). The bread is a bit on the expensive side ($6 for a loaf of challah) but I would definitely pay that for the quality of it.

It may be a franchise, but the folks that run the place make it feel like a mom and pop operation. And free slices! Can't be beat. The bread is top quality and the folks selling it to you really know their business.

Great people, great attitudes. Everyone gets a "free sample" upon entry...brownie bread is awesome. Cheesy breads great also. Love the sign - neon lit "Yep" if open. Great place to assemble a gift basket for the mom or dad who loves food and already has everything else. This is a franchise but owned by a nice young Burlington VT couple with young children.

Wonderful bakery with a great staff of friendly folks, all obviously happy to share the fantastic goods baked on site. Very pleasant cafe that serves delicious breakfast and lunch items, including sandwiches and hot paninis. Nice selection of gift items and baskets. But the highlight here are the delicious breads, scones and muffins - all made with flour freshly milled on premise. This is a locally owned franchise that makes many Great Harvest classics but also local variations. My favorites: Woostock bread and raspberry ginger scones.

Great Bread! Hard to find good local bakeries in VT, if you live or are passing by Burlington check great harvest out! I cannot personally attest to many of the different breads, its hard to go wrong with the Farmers White. It weighs nearly 2 pounds--a meal in its self!

Wonderful wonderful bread, although not locally owned they claim to do a great job of using local ingredients and products. Regardless of that their bread is amazing! The Farmers White is what bread should taste like and their Challah is a Friday Favorite. Recommended.

Compared to some of the more well-known bakeries around Burlington, Great Harvest is a breath of fresh air. You walk in and are immediately welcomed and asked if you'd like a sample - which is a full size slice of warm, freshly baked bread. The breads and pastries are scrumptious - I especially like the scones, the cinnamon rolls (which are perversely gigantic) and Honey Wheat bread. As others have noted, it is a franchise but it is owned by a local couple and feels like a neighborhood bakery.

Great little spot. Love that they give samples and always have specials, etc. going on. Lots of bread options. Need to try more of the prepared food because everything I've had so far here has been good.

I don't even know where to begin with how much I love Great Harvest! The food and staff are fantastic! Before you even enter the aroma of fresh baked bread let's you know you're in for a treat. You can call ahead for take-out or eat in. So far I've tried: the BLT (my favorite), Buffalo Chicken Panini, and the Nor'easter Panini (turkey). They're all delicious! I can't wait to try the other menu items soon.

Great Harvest is my favorite bakery! They have great staples (the honey whole what is excellent) as well as daily specials, scones, cinnamon rolls, and coffee. The staff is the friendliest in Burlington; always smiling, often singing, and will give you samples of anything to try before you buy it. I recommend the cinnamon swirl and apple crunch bread, although everything is good.

This place was great!! It is not in the center of town but is in what seems to be a hip artsy block. The bread was fantastic, the gazpacho was delicious, the people were lively and friendly and the building was neat. My dog loved the homemade dog biscuits. Highly recommended.

4.5 stars This place was AMAZING!! I would eat here everyday if I could handle all the carbs in the bread! Haha The service was so fast and prompt. The staff was very helpful in helping me make my decision. I got the endless summer panini and my boyfriend got the Green Goddess with turkey. While we were waiting for the food we each got a HUGE sample of the cinnamon swirl bread. I regret not getting a loaf to take home. It was mouth watering. Wow. Right away our paninis came. Wow. DELICIOUS. The endless summer panini I got had pesto, tomatoes , and cheese. It was toasted to perfection. I would recommend this panini. I tasted my boyfriends panini and it was so good too! His panini had artichokes, turkey, onions, spinach and cheese. Yummy! I highly recommend this place. My mouth is watering thinking about it. Only downfall is that the tables were very dirty and full of crumbs and I never once saw the staff come and clean off the tables.

Yummy! Great harvest bread company is actually a great bakery. They have daily breads as well as specials such as muffins or scones. The baked goods are always fresh and delicious. I believe that they try to use as many local ingredients as they can and do a great job. The staff there are always friendly and happy to offer a free sample of a slice of bread. So don't be shy- feel free to ask to something before you commit.

Not sure which type of bread to buy? No problem, they'll let you sample their stuff! My cousin brought me in yesterday and my only complaint is that they're not located in my town too :( Delicious and fresh. I'm not sure if it's true, but I heard they donate their leftovers at the end of the night too! I'll be back!

Holy. Good. God. Just happened upon this place. The sample was huge. The place is super cute. Everything looked amazing. Let me tell you the green chili cheese bread may be the most amazing piece of bread I have ever ever EVER eaten. And i love carbs. Go here. Please. And then mail me some more.

SERIOUS BREAD! This place is really cool. I know it's a franchise but Great Harvest really feels like it fits Burlington well. They give you the BIGGEST sample ever right when you walk in. It's pretty much a meal. I've tried most of their breads over the years and never been let down. Love the Santa Fe cornbread, high five fiber, and any of their breads with cheese. Seriously amazing stuff. The staff is always super friendly. I like their treats, scones, and Savannah bars. I would give them a perfect rating but their brownies are kinda weak and their lunch portions are a little small for the sandwiches and salads. I guess with the sample i usually end up full anyway! Their cookies are amazing! Salted caramel cookie - you will be hooked! (and also in diabetic shock) They have a punch card for frequent customers and you get a free loaf with every dozen you buy. This place is really great!

Prior to my initial visit, I had seen GH stock at local grocery stores but had never purchased, only lusted for their corn bread from afar. I resolved to visit the actually store since I like buying directly from purveyors. Holy s--t was I right to do so!!! Interior: it is so comfortable and warm. The kitchen is open so you can see what the bakers are working on. To the right is a sandwich station (haven't used so can tell you pricing info) and to the left is a seating area. It's definitely a comfortable feeling inside, nice and simple, unlike some of the other bakeries in the area. Service: now, I'm sure everyone posts this but they offer FREE SAMPLES when you get to the counter. It ranges from a variety of breads to other baked goods depending on when you get there/what is in stock. Best of all, there is a bowl(!) of butter and a bottle of honey for you to enjoy on your warm sample of bread. It doesn't stop there--the samples are excellently portioned so that you can truly get an idea of the heartiness of the product. I also have to say the staff make the experience exponentially better. Having only been in twice, I can't say this is true all the time but the people working were genuinely friendly and want to make sure you get a great service/eating experience. The person helping me did not hesitate when I asked for a description of EVERYTHING on the shelf that day as well as to give me recommendations. The thing about GH is that, service wise, I didn't not feel like just another customer. I did not feel like they were trying to rush me out or ignore me because I told them I was only browsing (many other shops have staff like this). Moreover, the interactions amongst the staff tell me that they enjoy working there and seem like they are all friends--yet another plus because it produces a fun loving, friendly atmosphere that I want to return to. Not sure if the service staff also help bake but they sure know their stuff!!! Bread: ok, down to the final test. On my visits, I sampled a oaty blueberry muffin that was dynamite. Full of whole blue tries, super moist. I also tried the cheddar garlic bread--don't mess with this one! While the taste of garlic is not overwhelming at all, I noticed my own garlic breath long after I left the shop! If you like cheddar, this is a great choice---loads of cheddar chunks! Apple crunch loaf: I ate this in TWO days. My thighs are stilled mad at me. It's covered in brown sugar (crunch) and filled with chunks of Apple. They also mix in Apple sauce so the bread is super moist and had an amazing texture. Two. Days. Yum! Nine grain: I'm in love with this bread. They must put magic in it because I can't get enough. It's a wheat bread but much more. I'm drooling just thinking about it...this bread is uber hearty, extremely flavorful and downright worth every penny. Carrot roll: I love this idea. If you like carrot cake and love cream cheese frosting, you should try this. You are never wanting for frosting. The only downside for me was that it doesn't have nuts and/or raisins. That's just me! Final assessment: while prices are high, the quality of the product makes it worth every penny. The only downside to this is if you eat the bread to fast and have to go back every couple days to sate the demons lusting for more bread!!! On the bright side, you may want to go back that frequently as service here is the friendliest I have encountered at a bakery in this area. Also, I feel bad for everyone in town who is gf--you are all missing out!

Entering the Bakery you're instantly greeted with a smile and a free slice of bread. The employees are some of the nicest in town, and the quality of the bread cannot be matched by any other local bakeries. Right in the front of the store you see the employees baking their bread, and to the right is the sandwich station which is a very affordable and delicious lunch option. Daily they have multiple freshly baked options for loafs, all of which your able to try a slice FOR FREE, along with a variety of cookies other pastry items, and homemade dog biscuits! Living right around the corner this is one of my most frequent stops while taking the dog on a walk, I highly recommend this bakery for either a loaf of bread, lunch, or a dessert item.

Their scones are the best! They are soft, not dry like most, and the flavor choices are great. Everything I've tried is delicious...from their cinnamon rolls to tea breads. They offer free samples and there is always something new to try!

Absolutely the best non-baguette gluten-rich bread thingees. They do have a gluten-free thing on Tuesdays I think, but what's the point? Yes, I will be having a wee bit of joint bloating but...damn, it is surely fine stuff. Just so ya know, lunches do the bomb thing, too. I just noticed the breakfast sandwich sign. Sigh. All things in moderation. Oh, and the staff are beyond cool and cheerful. Seems that they live for making sure that you inner kids leave extremely happy. "What? I can have a free sample? And there is a mountain of soft butter that I can help myself to?" Insert maniacal laughter if the pirate kind. "Prepare to board, me hearties! Take no prisoners!"

I wandered over here while my sister was furniture shopping next door and I am patting myself on the back for stumbling upon this place. When I walked in they were offering free bread samples and it was a very generous, thick slice of bread/sample. I had the cinnamon swirl and it tastes like a cinnamon bun in bread form. Which naturally led to my selection of a cinnamon roll as a treat for later. The cinnamon roll was amazing. Seriously, the best cinnamon roll I have ever had, anywhere. I'm from out of state and just visiting but I plan on returning the next time I'm in Burlington.

I LOVE THIS BAKERY. Highly recommend the whole wheat, apple bread, cornbread, etc...my girlfriend loves the garlic cheese bread as well. This place rocks. Everything is good and they are super friendly and helpful.

Super-friendly service. Gave us a slice of bread each when we walked in. Ingredients were very fresh. Curried chicken salad was a bit too dry for the sandwich but stood well on its own. Green goddess panini was full of creamy cheesy goodness.

Oh boy. Where do I begin? I went to the Burlington VT location and wow. The store is clean and has great lighting. The employees all were incredibly pleasant and genuinely seemed to enjoy their job, which is the X factor for me. I went in for breakfast, which apparently is a new thing for them. I got the egg, bacon, and cheese sandwich with a sauce (can't remember) on honey wheat bread. I couldn't speak until I was done eating, it was phenomenal. I have never had such fluffy eggs and now I;m dying to know how they cooked them! I wish I could eat 3 meals a day from there. I got a slice of cheddar garlic as my complimentary sliceand ended up buying a loaf of it. So soooooo good! Gives a whole new meaning to you get what you pay for. Can't wait to go back!

I'm surprised there are only 6 reviews for Great Harvest Bread because it is seriously, SO GOOD! I'm not going to lie, my bf and I came here once, maybe twice, no definitely more than that to come and get a sample of their bread. Yes, they will cut you a very generous slice of whatever bread you would like to sample. They have a big bowl of butter on the side if you are lucky enough to get a slice of warm bread to lather it with. Our hands down favorites were the almond babka (which they only serve once a week) and the cinnamon swirl which they serve every day. The almond babka bread is pillowy, a little doughy, and filled with an almond/sugar/butter mix. It is addicting, especially if you get it right out of the oven. I would have to take it away from my bf before he ate half the loaf. Put a little butter on it and voila, its like bread heaven. The cinnamon is always good too. It filled with cinnamon, cinnamon, sugar, and more cinnamon and tastes great as toast. They also serve a variety of scones, muffins, and cookies which change daily as well as sandwiches which are okay, but nothing special. Since all of the ingredients are local and you do get to sample their bread, prices for the breads aren't cheap. Its about $6-7. I think the white loaf's may be a little cheaper. Definitely try it out if you are in the area and are looking for a loaf of good, hearty bread. YELP 365: 031/365

This place is filthy. There is dirt and hair and ants in the shop. I'm very disturbed by the poor sanitary practices of this place. The staff let their long hair fly all over the food. I would never go here again. And the bread was mediocre.

Only good things to say about this place. Stopped by to get some bread and morning pastries and were greeted by the owner who immediately offered us generous slices of a very delicious cinnamon swirl bread. He (the owner) was also very helpful answering my questions about ingredients and storage. We ended up buying a couple of loaves of bread, some scones (the chocolate chip ones are wonderful) and a cookie. Everything was fresh and tasted great. Definitely a place worth a visit!

The smell of fresh bread when you walk in is amazing. They offer free samples of bread cut at least 1" thick. Try the cinnamon bread. Ordered a chocolate brownie it must weigh 1 pound.

My wife turned me on to Great Harvest Bread Company in Evanston, IL. We loved it. While living in Boston, we discovered there was a GHBC close, but we never made the trek to where ever it was in Massachusetts. We moved to Burlington and made a comment that we never went to GHBC and much to our surprise, when we got here, Great Harvest was waiting for us! Our favorite bread is the staple Cinnamon Bread. But we get our weekly sandwich bread here as well. They will slice it for you or you can take it unsliced. You can try bread for free. Ask for a "Yep" card and after buying 12 loaves you get one free. This is more than a bakery, it is also a deli where you can get sandwiches, salads and soups. I love the tuna salad sandwich. If you are going for something a little more exciting, you can try the turkey, brie with apples. If they have the ingredients, they will make you something even if it is not on the menu...

I never set out to go to Great Harvest Bread Co, its more like its Sunday and I just got done with errands, start contemplating my afternoon coffee/snack and I realize that Panadero is closed and August First had already stopped serving its menu. So...I go to Great Harvest. The free slice of bread makes every visit a filling one--but you will notice that no one really hangs around. Something about the atmosphere isn't conducive to lingering over your coffee and baked good. I tried doing work there once and it just wasn't comfortable. They also don't make espresso drinks. I think this is the kind of establishment where you stop in to buy a loaf of bread, and then leave. If I think of it in those terms, it probably deserves a higher rating. Obviously your objective in visiting a bakery changes your perception of it--and my object is to find a place to study/drink coffee/have incredible pastries...and I just don't want to do that here.

It's a little out off the beaten path so I usually forget it exists but I love this place. Great Harvest is definitely worth the trip. Everything seems like it's right out of the oven. Go early if you're looking for your favorites - the regulars grab the best stuff by afternoon so sometimes they run out. Highly recommend. Like everyone else said - I'm surprised there are so few reviews here.

The bread selection looked great and the samples were nicely sized, although $6.50 for a loaf of bread is quite steep.

  • Rob G.

My girlfriend and I loved our sandwiches- green goddess and the hummus & veggies. Both were very tasty and filling and cost around $6.50. Free bread slices is always nice and we love their cheesy garlic sticks ($1.25 ea.) so much! And their cinnamon swirl bread is to die for! Can't wait to go again! Difficult to rate this place compared with a sit-down full menu restaurant but it's definitely a place I'll return to which, in the end, is all that matters.
