.....the excellent ratings I've read of Cafe Provence did not stack up with our experience. Though the aesthetics of the restaurant were appealing the food was average. The mussel appetizer was particularly salty as was my entree. An hour later I'm still thirsty. My husbands beef bourginois sp included a steak that was OK not great. The sauce was tasty. The garlic mashed potatoes were bland and starchy, not garlicky. With both meals the presentation seemed more important than the food. I would have even given it a three but our waitress came to our table twice and for a relatively expensive meal(the bill came to 76.00 plus tip) I consider this poor service. Once to bring us the appetizer and the other to bring our meal. Not once did she ask how we were doing etc. The cashier saw us done and sitting there and came over and took our empty plates and we asked for our check. We finally had contact with the waitress when she brought our card back. Maybe at one time the food and service were better. I suppose for a small town with few options in eating this is fine for people, but we paid way too much for a very mediocre meal. I'd like to think it was just a bad night.

For quality, flavor and price this restaurant is unbeatable. The only drawback was that we had to wait almost an hour to be served. As an apology we were given a dessert of our choice, on the house. The Chicken Nicoise with garlic mashed potatoes was amazing.

over 8 years my family have had some delicious meals and some serious misses. i give the service and desserts 4-5 stars for being consistently good but i can't say the same for our entrees which are either good-very good or not great-cold rubbery lobster/hair-in-the-waffle bad. i really wish we loved it here but too many inconsistent meals plus a pricey menu means it's not our go to spot.

Food was amazing. I had the Crab Cake bennies and my fiancé had the French toast. Our appetizer was taking a while and they brought out a free bowl of soup as a tasting as an apology. Great service. Great price. Will certainly come back here any time I am in the area.

My husband had a duck an I seafoos, it was amazing.... The desert (sorbet and chocolat bomb) was delicious too! Nice surprise this dinner!

As you walk in it is very welcoming. The open kitchen immediately draws your eye and it is very clean and organized. There are 4 places to sit and watch the goings on in the kitchen. The chef/owner is at the helm impeccably dressed in his whites. Roomy dining area with lots of natural light. I arrived after 2pm on a Monday and the dining room was busy. Service was fine but the food was wonderful and good value for the money. The menu has a nice lunch selection and the desserts in the case are just waiting to be enjoyed. I would recommend this establishment to friends passing through.

So I spent a little over a month in Brandon, VT. And like most other places in Vermont, I expected the food to be great; but, I didn't expect it to be amazing! Cafe Provence changed that perception. Although it has been around for some time, it doesn't fail to draw a crowd! The food is spectacular. The head chef, Chef Robert, has quite an impressive background - trained in France, worked in chic hotel restaurants, and has profound experience in creating 5-star cuisine. The staff is so welcoming and hospitable! Chef Tim creates wonderful dishes, under the purview of Chef Robert. Christian Fjeld, another gifted member of the establishment, has quite the talent for everything from salads to fried ricotta cheese cakes, to pasta dishes and more! The food itself is delicious and fresh. You cannot go wrong with selecting anything on the menu. My personal favorite is the Turkey BLT - one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. In addition to the restaurant, there is a bar downstairs that shares the same kitchen - and I HIGHLY recommend the chicken tenders. They are perfectly breaded and seasoned. What really surprised me is the lack of grease and oil! Never once did I feel gross after eating them. Next time I'm in Brandon, I will certainly be visiting Cafe Provence again. Chef Robert also has a pastry shop a short (3-5 minute) walk from the restaurant, called Gourmet Provence. I would highly recommend checking it out!

Was driving up route 7 and knew we would be in Bristol around lunchtime and did a search. It was Sunday and the other place we noted was about to close at 1:00 so it was off to Cafe Provence, fortunately!! We had trouble choosing between the brunch and lunch menu as everything looked interesting and watching the food move from the open kitchen to the tables was making our mouths water. I had the special omlette (carmalized onions and tomatoes). The lightest omlette I've ever had. Just the right amount of good hash browns (potatos) and a good salad with it. My wife had the eggs benedict (her favorite thing to order anywhere for breakfast) and said it was the best she ever had and the poached eggs were perfect. This place is a must.

One would never expect such a great restaurant in this small town. So get ready to be surprised. The signature seafood stew is as good as u have tastes anywhere. I also recommend the lobster crepe. Casual dining at its best! Christy

If you are looking for a heck of a meal, this is it! But beware, you will wait for the food to arrive. Always a high quality meal, solid service, & if you save room afterwards, get dessert!

What a bright light this place is for Brandon. It's a bit of a countrified French style cafe that draws customers from as far away as Middlebury & Rutland, as well as tourists passing through. Between the four of us, we had soup, salads, baguette sandwiches and pasta. Everything was excellent. This is a fun place...

Lovely spot....excellent french bistro with a VT feel. Pleasant service and nice wine list. They also own a bakery/deli/wine shop down the street with an excellent breakfast/lunch offering but also a wide selection of wines & beers. Stop by & then browse some of the other local shops in town

We were passing through town and stopped in for sandwiches to go. The people were nice and the restaurant was someplace I would eat at. The sandwiches , however, were very skimpy on meat and my wife said hers was not very flavorful. If you want sandwiches, you might try someplace else.

Let me preface my 5-star review by saying that this place is definitely 5 star for Brandon. It is the restaurant that sets the standard in Brandon and until it came along I'm pretty sure there was nothing above a 3-star eatery in town. Meals here are consistently very good. Surprisingly good. The chef trained in France (is he French? I don't think so, but I'm pretty sure he trained there). I've had some lovely dishes like the seafood stew, steaks, chicken dishes. Everything is better than you might expect. The dessert case always has very delicious looking desserts that also taste fabulous. They also offer cooking classes and wine classes. I hear they have opened a bar/dining area downstairs, too, that's quite popular. However, be prepared to WAIT for you food. I've never had a meal served quickly here. It always takes quite a while. The last time my family and I went it took even longer than quite a while, it took an hour for our food to come out. Anywhere else and I would be pretty unhappy, but because I know it takes a long time here, I wasn't too bothered. The rest of my party was bothered. They did not remember having to wait for food the last times we were here. I don't think it's the staff. I'm pretty sure it's the kitchen that causes the wait. And they do such a great job, most the time I'm ok with waiting. If it weren't for the fact I love this place and I love what it's done for Brandon I might give it 4 stars. I'm a big fan of any place that can give its surroundings a face lift and make its town more charming just by being there and I believe Cafe Provence and its sister store have done just that. Since opening, other quaint shops have opened down the street. Brandon is now the sort of place I wish it had been when I was growing up nearby.

We dined at Cafe Provence when we were on vacation in Vermont in early September. We drove up from Rutland on a Sunday and ate there for lunch. Each of us had the salmon special that was delicious, prepared well and unique with its dishes that accompanied it. The service was excellent also. We would love to return if we are back in the area.

Had company from San Francisco whom we wanted to impress with a French restaurant in rural Vermont. What a disaster! We made reservation for 3 people for Thrusday, 8/27/15 at 6:30PM. Table was ready as almost all tables were available. We were led to a table with 2 plate settings. The third setting was only brought to the table after we asked when the appetizers were served. Ordered a fine bottle of Brunello red wine for $88 only to witness a young and unexperienced server to spill some of the mussel sauce into my glass and cloth. Accidents can happen but that the main server did not have the courtesy to offer a complimentary glass of red wine (did not have to be of the same quality) was beyond belief! Instead when asking what is happening now with my empty glass, she simple answered that they will deduct $20 from the $80 wine price!! My wife and I each had veal Osso Bucco which was delicious. Our visiting son, a vegetarian, ordered a Greek pizza since there was no vegetarian dish available that evening. The bottom crust of his pizza was so much undercooked that he could not lift up the slices from the table. When it came to pay up, the main server took the bill with my credit card only to spend about 15 minutes to chat with a person at the bar on the way to the register!!! I had to get up and tell her to do her job. We had so much pride of having a French Restaurant in our vicinity that we could brag about among our out of state friends, but boy, never again!! Very poor service, no idea about customer service and non-commital, rude personnel! If it had not been for the Osso Bucco and the mussels, a single star rating would have been too generous!!

This place is GOOD. We've been coming here for years for everything from a casual light lunch to a big dinner with family and they hit the ball out of the park every time. That's all.

I traveled to Brandon, VT for a wedding this past weekend and was lucky enough to dine at Cafe Provence for dinner (AND brunch since dinner was so good I just had to go back.) I am from New York and work in the city and have all the best restaurants and cuisine at my fingertips, but I have to say this was one of the BEST meals I have had in as long as I can remember. Cafe Provence is a hidden gem and the crown jewel of Brandon, VT. If you are ever in the area you MUST go or you will seriously be missing out! Chef Robert is an absolute genius and his food is simply divine. Made with so much heart and passion, every bite is a vacation to France and a delectable prize for your palate. I had the beef medallions for dinner and they literally melted in my mouth and the mashed potatoes rival my Mom's (shhh). My friend ordered the duck and it was absolutely magnificent. Even the warm bread that is served is a true testament to Vermont filled with plump berries and nuts. Despite being full we went on to dessert. We had the Chef's tasting plate and the creme brule was of course one of the the best I've had - so creamy and rich, the chocolate bomb was criminal and the pumpkin cheesecake was the perfect Vermont creamy dessert with a perfect crust and delicious flavors. I have to say I get excited by food, but I have not been this blown away in a really long time. Every single item was so special and fantastic. I loved seeing Chef Robert working in the open kitchen. He is a quiet, unassuming master at his art, yet his food speaks volumes and his confidence shines through as he owns his kitchen. What a treat to watch. Dinner was so good that we went back for brunch and once again the eggs Benedict with smoked ham was the best I've ever had. I have never been so excited over a perfectly poached egg in all my life. Every bite was literally a dream! I couldn't stop there and got the brioche french toast and it was insane; topped with Vermont syrup just put it over the top. The flavors were so rich and unique it was like eating Panetone french toast. Let me also tell you that the bloody Mary I had with brunch was also awesome in a large glass garnished with two perfectly plump olives. Every single item on the menu is delicious and I just had to share my love of this restaurant. I would literally travel back to Brandon, just to go to Cafe Provence. Besides the wedding, it was the highlight of my weekend, my month, my year! It is an understated restaurant, but the food is out of this world and the service was great. I just can't reiterate enough what a pleasure it was to taste Chef Roberts food and to indulge in such a delicious culinary experience. He is so talented and well-versed and the fact that he has set up.this restaurant in sleepy Brandon, VT is a true gift to the people there. I feel fortunate to have found this place which is now in my top 10 favorite restaurants of all time. If I haven't made it clear enough, please go to Cafe Provence. If you are seriously about good food it's a must and all diners alike with feel lucky to have tasted the delicious French plates Chef Robert creates. What an incredible place with out of this world food!!!

A great experience! Unique menu items and very friendly staff. We felt welcome despite being out-of-towners. The chef really respects the art of food preparation and it showed with every dish that arrived at our table. Our server took the time to understand our dietary needs and followed up with the kitchen. My only complaint is that the restaurant smelled strongly of cheese upon entering. Excellent atmosphere and food! I highly recommend!

Vermont is full of surprises. Following a recent Argentine wine tasting at Café Provence, we decided to stay for dinner. Having been to this restaurant a number of times in the past few years, mostly for lunch, this was the perfect excuse for dinner. Situated in the small and charming town of Brandon, Café Provence offers French fare in a comfortable and easy-going atmosphere. The restaurant, as with so many places in Vermont incorporates much local produce; be it beef, beer, cheeses or veggies. My wife ordered crab cakes while I decided on escargots in puff pastry. Given that the Chef excels in pastry, the dish blended really light and beautifully made pastry with the snails. For entrees, my wife again returned to the Moules Marinieres, steamed mussels. As we often have "moules" in France, this is a good comparison; Café Provence passed the taste test flawlessly. Properly cooked mussels in a savory white wine, tomato and shallot sauce. I ordered a beef burger, not my usual choice, but the grass- fed beef and veggies came from local farms and tasted ever so fresh. We finished with Café Gourmand, the coffee was good but the pastries on the plate again showed the Chef at his best . Service is Ok, but could be better. ... Overall Café Provence is well worth the visit. And yes, they have a small pastry and wine shop down the street.

I have been to the French Laundry in Yountville CA and now I have been to Cafe Provence and they are on par wth each other. ...except pricewise. My sis Sharon and friend Lyn live in Brandon and have been raving about Cafe Provence. I am in my eigth decade and fond of dining out. It is not an exaggeration to say the lobster on a bed of risotto was the best entrée I have had -EVER! The food alone is worth a trip to Brandon. And our waitress was a delight!

Awesome meal! Seafood stew was exceptional--mussels, scallops and shrimp over risotto. Chef's choice for dessert was nice--4 small portions of ice cream, creme brûlée, chocolate bomb and cheesecake. Just what I want--as many different desserts as possible. We will definitely be back.

Very good. We had soups, pizza, chicken nicoise entree, coffee, small dessert, glass of excellent Merlot and mixed drink - all for $80. Great price, imho. Veggie and pasta with rhe nreaded chicken were so good I mase that my meal. I found the breading on the chicken a bit much. Has 3 small pastries for dessert. So rich they were plenty of a sweet. Btw, I RARELY give 5s.

We (family of five) have been enjoying cafe Provence since it's opening. Our most recent dinner was excellent. The food quality is exceptional. The one drawback is the unprofessional service. There are no table clothes on the tables which is OK but the staff does not keep the tables clean. After our main course the bus person removed the plates - just the plates The table was full of empty glasses, dropped pieces of food, sauce, little puddles of water from the glasses, bread crumbs - normal end of dinner mess. When the server came to take our dessert order I asked if we could trouble her to clear the table. The bus person came back and took the bread plates just before dessert was served. We love the place and will return. For the quality and price of the food I expect the service to be superior to a fast food place.

We planned a day trip to Vermont around a lunch at Cafe Provence, and it was a great decision. This place really sparkles. From the neat entrance on the second level to the large glass windows and outdoor seating, everything about the place is physically appealing. But the real treat is the food, of course, which is fresh, delicious and perfectly spiced. We came in for lunch, and enjoyed the soups for appetizer: corn chowder bursting with fresh local corn, and cold dill/cucumber. We settled on a bottle of the "house" sauvignon blanc, which it turns out is produced in Pays D'Oc, in the Southwestern part of France, and it was well suited to our lunches. The entrees were fabulous, too, and included a chicken dish with olives and garlic mashed potatoes, and tomato pie (with shrimp). We passed on dessert only because we wanted to try the chef's own bakery (just down the street), and stroll in this very adorable town. The service was fast, accurate and friendly. We can't say enough good things about this place. Come here on a summer afternoon and imagine you are surrounded by fields of lavender outside of Aix.

Back in Brandon for a visit after a year, I was anticipating with pleasure a dinner at Cafe Provence. It lived up to my memory of excellence, and even surpassed it! The parmesan cheese crisps are light and satisfying at the same time, perfectly prepared. I told my server that I am gluten free, and she cheerfully went through the menu with me, explaining what was already gluten free and what could also be modified to be gluten free. I appreciated the flexibility and concern for my wishes. The ambiance is lovely, warm and elegant in a friendly, pleasing way. My calamari, cooked for me without the breading, was tender and delicious. My friends beef was tender, cooked to perfection, and luscious. Our server was professional and knowledgeable. My companion, Italian born, whose first visit it was, complimented the experience by saying that not only was the food among the best he's had in the United States, but that the , embodies the warm of Vermont's people, the perfection of its products, with the knowledge and skill of a world class chef and clearly well-trained staff. A wonderful dinner, and we both will make sure our next Vermont trip plans feature a return to Cafe Provence!

I went here with Lelac at the recommendation of our bed and breakfast host. We ended up going back during our short trip because it was so good. With a wide variety of drinks and dishes for everyone - the comfort food specialist and the adventurous foodie - Cafe Provence pleases. The place itself has a fancy feel to it; this is what NYC restaurants try to feel like. The staff is very friendly and personable. They won't hesitate to chat with you or even tease you (our hostess especially liked my Adventure Time hat). My first visit, I had the lasagna. That evening it wasn't vegetarian as usual. It wasn't the overloaded-with-flavor lump that I've come to expect. This lasagna was a bit more subtle and delicate on my taste buds while simultaneously satisfying my desire for LASAGNA. Lelac's salmon was perfectly tenderly cooked. It was buttery without butter. The second visit, I had the portobello pizza. It was similarly satisfying my desire for PIZZA while being intricate and exact enough to let me feel fancy about it. Lelac's swordfish was extremely tasty. Our bread was particularly good the first night when it had cranberries and pecans or something awesome like that. Come here to celebrate or have an intimate dinner. You will be pleased.

Really, really liked this place. Taste the food and you begin to figure out that this is a really classy Chef. Check out his CV, he is French and has trained with the best and it shows. Absolutely delicious, fresh, sophisticated food. The flat tomato pie was fantastic. The desserts were yummy. Service friendly and helpful. Oh and it was great value. We had to drag ourselves away.

While cruising Rt 7 I spotted this place and decided to stop in for dinner and it was amazing. I can't believe there is a French bistro this good in the central VT that is using almost all local and organic sourced products. The wine selection was also excellent and did not break the bank. I also loved the setup inside and the outside patio seating was great. So first they brought out some warm bread that was clearly homemade and super fresh. One of the selections was a whole wheat with different berries baked into it with some spices. It was amazing. There was also some baguette which was good, but paled in comparison to the other selection. Then I had the baked goat cheese salad which was absolutely amazing. They pan fried 2 chunks of goat cheese with some breading and put them atop a good salad. I then had a goat cheese pizza with eggplant, spinach and some other vegetables that was labeled as a vegetarian selection, but was awesome none the less. Then there was desert. I ended up going with the Chefs selection which had a mini creme brulee, chocolate cake, and lemon cheescake. The brulee and the cheesecake were unbelievable, but the chocolate cake was average.

Service should have been more welcoming. We sensed a bit of an attitude. Food was good. Seafood stew was absolutely awesome. Don't let the name fool you much...there were many Italian entrees, some French.

I visited here with a group on a quiet Wednesday night. The service was attentive, and the Malbec wine flowed and this seemed to be priced reasonably. I had been recommended the fish stew...so that was my main course and 10 out of 10 it scored! Piping hot, tasty and filling. I started with the calamari and the fish was served fried and crisp, on a tomato and salad base and again hit the spot. All our party of 7 enjoyed the evening, and the bill came to about $50.00 a head which was fair value. I liked the atmosphere...hailing from the UK I felt that the style was very European. Good simple design to the restaurant and a very open kitchen allowed one to watch food being prepared. I didn't take advantage of the brick pizza oven....so I'll simply have to return soon!

My wife and I recently celebrated our wedding anniversary with our first visit to Cafe Provence for lunch. We visited France for 3 1/2 weeks in May and June living in Saint Remy de Provence for two weeks. Our hopes that we could experience something close to what we did in Provence were more than satisfied. We began by sharing two appetizers: Baked Brie with Cranberry Chutney and Walnuts and Pan Fried Curried Calamari over Forbidden Rice. Both were excellent! Our entries: Pan Seared Sea Scallops with Asparagus Spears and Saffron Risotto and Chicken Nicoise over Garlic Mashed Potatoes were also delicous. A bottle of the house rose, Perles de Rosé by Domaine de Bachellery (Coteaux du Libron) was a perfect accompaniment. Service was perfect during our two-hour lunch. These wonderful dishes take time to prepare. Don't set yourself up for disappointment by expecting to be in and out within an hour. It's just not that kind of restaurant. We will definitely return soon...

Nice friendly outdoor patio space but the food left something to be desired. For wine tasting on a schedule, the service was slow. I was disappointed in the food. Seriously, who cooks an avocado?

Had lunch yesterday at Cafe Provence. We had the scallops with saffron risotto which was delicious. It is served in a bowl with tasty broth. Curiously, they didn't offer any bread to mop up the broth, so we flagged down a bus boy to bring some bread. It took forever til they heated up the bread, found a basket....! Our waitress was nowhere to be found. There were some very annoying flies that we couldn't seem to shoo away. And I don't mean one or two....

We went here for lunch while on a wine and cheese tour. The place was cute and the service was friendly. It's a slow food place so be prepared to wait a little while--not the place to go for lunch if you're on a tight schedule. The thin tomato pie was wonderful. My friend had the spinach avocado Brie wrap, which was served hot and was not at all good. Very disappointing for her. So...50%.

I went for dinner and had the tomato pie and the vegetarian lasagna, both of which were outstanding. As other reviewers have mentioned, the service was a disaster. Although I had made a reservation, I had to wait to be seated, and saw customers who arrived after me being seated first. I was never asked if I preferred to eat inside or outside, although they had tables in both areas and it was a balmy summer evening. Once I got seated, nobody showed up to take my order for almost 30 minutes, nor did anyone stop by to apologize. My greeter stopped by twice to say that the waitress was on her way, and the second time he offered me a glass of water, always in a matter-of-fact way, as if this was customary. Again, this was a summer evening and I was getting aggravated by the minute. When the waitress finally showed up, she took my order without apologizing for the delay. Meanwhile, I saw other customers being served before me. It was clear that they had an attitude problem and that locals/frequent customers receive much better treatment than strangers. I gave them 3 stars because the food was excellent, but I'm planning to return to the area to do some cycling and I will not consider going back to this restaurant.

They have a great wine list and occasionally have wine tastings. They even have an organic wine or two on the wine list. The menu features organic, free range and local ingredients. The food is delicious and the portions are large. They've got an early-bird special that is super-inexpensive. Generally the staff is wonderful, but one time we experienced a homophobic waitress --- they got rid of her right away. That's the right way to run a successful business!

I had the chance to dine at Cafe Provence on several occasions while living in VT, but the most memorable time was the dinner following my Middlebury graduation. We had a large party of 12 people and practically took over about 1/3 of the restaurant, which is set up like a quaint cafe that you'd find in the South of France. While we're waiting for our food to arrive, a drunk diner wanders over to our table from the bar and asks us if we were at graduation that day. He looks at Erin R. "Were you the graduation speaker? You were really good." For the record, she was not. Nevertheless, he continued on and got so wrapped up in what he was saying that he just sat down in my friend Erica's seat while she went to the bathroom. We find out that he's from Berkeley. Oh here we go... I'm from Berkeley. He says, "Oh do you know Stephanie Lee??? I'm a history teacher and she was one of my students. One of my best students... I got her into Haaarvard. I wrote her an excellent recommendation. She was a great violinist. You know, your people are quite talented. What are you? Chinese? You might be...::drunk pause:: the next... President." ::awkward pause/state of confusion:: Drunk man's wife signals for him to return to the bar. "Come on honey, lets leave these people alone and let them enjoy the rest of their dinner." Whew. My friend Erica can finally have her seat back. Every meal I've eaten here, the food has been amazing. Some dishes you must try are the warm spinach salad, the seafood stew and the mussels. They really know how to cook their seafood and fish. For dessert, the chocolate bomb is a must and the crisps are good depending on the fruit in season.
