The first three times I visited, Hunter's Head was a 5 (2009-2010). The last 3 visits have been 3 stars (2011-2012). //Food// I've been to Hunter's head 5 or 6 times over the last 3 years, and my 3 most recent visits were progressively worse. We look forward to the dry-aged steak, but in the last year, the cuts of the rib-eye I've received have contained too much gristle...that combined with the blunt knives that come with them really worsen the effect. The kitchen doesn't seem top notch: we've received cold, raw meat twice in a row on the filet, and the presentation on the plates is sub par. The fried oysters, however, were really memorable! //Atmosphere// We look forward to coming here for the atmosphere; the building's ambiance is just unbeatable with that old world feel. As ridiculous as it seems, we do however miss the old long candles that use to light our tables, sitting in the old candle holders. They've been replaced with tea lights that just don't throw light off in the room with a flicker that helped to draw out the history in those walls! //Service// This was the worst part for us. The greeting by the hostess lacked welcome, the timing of delivery for appetizers and entrees was off...I think we were served our first two courses within 20 minutes of arriving...too fast. The quasi- service structure seems weird, I agreed with a past reviewer- water should be standard at the tables. We didn't receive waters until dessert, and weren't given refills after a 10 minute empty spell. No goodbye at the end...it all just felt very distant. We're hoping Hunter's Head turns that around. Those rib-eye steaks need to come out with better cuts at $30 a pop, presentation needs a boost, and the service staff need to coordinate on how to deliver a warmer experience. I'd recommend visiting, but stay away from dropping major change here, as it just won't measure up. The pub menu is probably the best direction to go here..for now.

Very good food. Been there a few times and between the food and cool atmosphere, I'd go back again anytime.

Best atmosphere for a winter night. The bread and the super foods salad were amazing! Fish and chips were just ok. The way you order is a little strange but staff were friendly.

Spectacular Tavern! A complete trip back into time! The food is freaking delicious! The fact that i could cut my venison with a spoon makes me super happy! :-) The service is on point, order your food at the window when you walk in, grab a pint, then one of the lovely servers will see to any of your needs after that! Ask for Anna or Lucy :-)

Decided to take a second trip out this way. As with last time i completely enjoyed both the atmosphere and the meals here. I plan on being a return customer, although i cant say it will be frequent due to the drive and cost. I do find the atmosphere to be one of the best parts of the restaurant. It can be a little loud depending on who is there, however for the most part its really has a nice cozy feeling. All in all, this place has earned its 5th star from me.

I live nearby & have eaten here many times. The waiting in line to order your food gets tiresome, especially when folks new to the place can't figure out the routine & the line gets long. Stick with the pub menu. The shepherd's pie is a hit, as are the burgers. The very good boca burger with a slice of Portobello is meaty & desish. It ain't cheap, though. Same with the wine, beer & mixed drinks. Aside from the confusion surrounding ordering, the service is generally attentive and good.

This place has an attitude that is enough to turn the most forgiving clientele away. The cutesy British Pub motif of getting up to pick up your food and ordering from the bar might be quant but seems to be in place to keep the staff from having to do anything to please the clientele. Food is ok, I had an overlooked although organic beef stew and it wasn't bad. The back has outside seating which is night if it's not too humid outside but the staff in the period clothing really need some work.

After driving away having had lunch today I asked my daughter, "Well, what did you think?" We discussed the merits of warm fresh rolls served as we waited (good), the flies (bad), the noise (bad), the underwhelming menu (bad), fresh lemonade (good), the service (good), her veggie burger (good), my salad (good), the interior (good) and the outside seating (good). In the end she told me, "It's a tavern dad. That limits their options." Sometime I expect too much from a restaurant - especially one as interesting looking as the Hunter's Head Tavern. It is a very attractive restaurant both inside and out looking very much like the "love child" of a 18th century Virginia farm house and a 1950s English pub. The food was good but unexceptional. The menu is standard pub fare. It was loud and it was crowded. If you are fine with those constraints, then it is well worth the drive.

We visited here on Saturday in October. We should have had a reservation, because we ended up sitting in the tent with the heaters, which was rather dark. I had a good hamburger and my husband had a shepard's pie which he found rather dry and had to send back to be heated up when it was delivered. The tent area is very dark at night and we felt the service wasn't as attentive as it should have been, perhaps because the waitstaff could not see us when we looked for them. I would like to come back and sit inside and try some other things on the menu.

I don't know how I lived in Loudoun County for 10 years and didn't discover this trippy English pub. Trippy because it's like stepping into a time warp and stepping out of the authentic red London phone booth by the front gate into an old fashioned English-style pub that contains some striking remnants (mantels, plank and mortar walls) of the 1750s log cabin, known as the Old Carr House, it began as. An arched entry with an iron gate leads you into a walled garden for wonderful outdoor dining when the weather is good. Dining inside is more time-traveley as you sit by a stone fireplace in a room with plank floors and log cabin walls. Shaded by big ancient trees with flower boxes hanging from each of the taverns windows, the garden dining is a great place to spend time with your honey or friends and enjoy a wonderful ambience and great tavern food served in laboring-class farm-family portions. English ales abound. The menu is almost tourist-agency tavern: Authentic shepherd's pie, ploughman's platter, bangers and mash, fish and chips. Ordering is "ordinary" style, in the pub sense of the word: You take your table number to the bar window, and the food comes out from the back. The staff are dressed in the sort of blousy-sleeved tunics and knee britches. Hunter's stews its beef in Guinness, makes its Welsh rarebit with English Cheddars, and lays out tea midweek and seasonal custard year-round. Almost all of the vegetables and meats are raised organically on the owner's Upperville farm. Coming to Hunter's Head tavern is an occasion...a special occasion, and one you'll keep coming back to. Dress is casual to business. Cost is $12-$25. Reservations are advised, especially for evening dining and weekends.

Maybe I was hungry or my expectations were just really low but everything we got here was unbelievably good. I've been to lots of these kinds of places and it seems you pay more for the ambiance and the theme than the food. Everything here, though, was great. The fish and chips were some of the best we've had (light batter, fresh fish, nicely done fries), the fried organic chicken was juicy with a crisp coating, the shepherd's pie very well done. Even the vegetarian lasagna was just amazing. Everything down to the vegetable sides and the bread was way beyond my expectations. Top top it off the sticky toffee pudding was delicious. I heartily recommend this place. Excellent English Pub fair in a beautiful setting.

We stopped in here after a great wine tasting down the road expecting a great local meal. Instead we had a $40 lunch (organic baked chicken and shepards pie) that was bland. The place was swarmed with flies although the decor was wonderful. Overall wouldn't Go back.

Enjoyed the outdoor courtyard and non-traditional pub food. Very vegetarian friendly. Sticky Carmel Pudding was a great way to complete a nice meal. Only minor criticism was that the "Sweet Potato Chips" turned out to be French fries that were a bit greasy & soggy. Definitely would recommend for food & ambience.

I've been to the Hunter's Head several time for lunch in the past, and decided to have an unconventional Valentine's dinner last night. Our waitress, Eleanor, was very nice and personable and went out of her way to explain the non-traditional ordering method to us. Unfortunately, the hostess who REALLY DIDN'T WANT TO WORK ON VALENTINE"S DAY insisted on slamming silverware down loudly (the dining room is in an old house with plaster walls and a wooden floor, sound REALLY carries) every opportunity that she had was really annoying. The fresh bread and butter are as wonderful as the other reviewers have stated, I could have hogged the whole plate to myself! The calamari is the best I have ever had, bar none. It's flavorful and not overly breaded. My venison stew was delicious, and I now have a new favorite. My friend loved her veal stew just as much. Unfortunately, my husband's rib-eye was pretty tough, but my other friend purchased a thicker cut, and his was fabulous. Just a note, this restaurant has delicious, fresh, organic food, but it is NOT a steak house. Try something else. I'll definitely be back.

GREAT PUB, GREAT FOOD & GREAT ATMOSPHERE(inside & outside) The bangers & mash w/their spicey mustard is d-lish. The fried chicken is outta this world. Their steaks are so fresh and cooked perfectly. Great beer selection. The bread is incredible. Worth the stop if you find yourself in Upperville. One tip, if it's a Friday or Saturday evening, give a call for a reservation(it'll help).

This place is delightful. The meat is grass fed, free range, organic and delicious. The atmosphere is quaint and welcoming to folks wearing (nice) barn boots or Cole Haan's. The locals always run into others they know. The menu is small enough that everything is done well but big enough to be interesting. When in doubt, you can't go wrong with the basics - mac & cheese, fish & chips, burger & fries. To top it off, the ginger carrot cake was worth breaking any diet for.

A perfect place to be on a cold night. This low-lit tavern with a wood-burning fireplace in the main dining area has a homey feel and incredibly fresh food, as it is a farm-to-table restaurant. Jon and I came here after a day of hiking in Shenandoah, but it would also be a perfect spot to hit after a winery tour. I ordered an inexpensive Samuel Smith's oatmeal stout and Jon a (equally inexpensive) Guinness at the bar while we waited for our table. At our table we were given warm bread and butter. This was a delicious delicately crusty and hearty white bread. We started with the cheese platter, which gave generous portions of 5 different artisan cheeses along with fresh figs and balsamic-pickled quince. Highly recommended as the cheeses were unusual and all tasty. For dinner, I ordered the Rib-Eye medium rare. It came with fresh slightly cooked green beans and turnips along with a huge portion of mashed potatoes. The steak was cooked perfectly and was just amazing. The steak itself was flavorful and tasted differently than the typical steaks I eat. Jon's pork chops were also delicious and had a unique citrus marinade. The pork meat had and interesting buttery-popcorn flavor. Unlike a few other reviewers, we had great service and a friendly waitress. Note: Do not come without reservations.

This place is fantastic. Kind of a far drive from the D.C. area but well worth it. Really cool old building. Great bread! Try the chicken pot pie or the beef stew. Great service as well!

My husband and I were hitting some wineries around Middleburg and at two separate wineries, this Hunter's Head was recommended. We figured we might as well give it a try. It was hot out so we chose to eat indoors, but I would love to go back in the fall and enjoy their gorgeous patio seating. But the indoor atmosphere was pleasant as well. We were immediately instructed on the ordering process which was quite simple. I could see it being kind of annoying if there was a large crowd, but we were there early for dinner so there was no line. We both ordered steak - my husband got the ribeye and I got the sirloin. We split the wedge salad too. Our salad came out quickly and was so fresh. Just as we finished that, our main meals were presented. Our steaks were large and cooked perfectly. Mine was "dry-aged" and was one of the best steaks I have tasted. We were a little full and tired from a day at the wineries so we got most of our meals packed up. The service was great, our serve was very nice and friendly. We were celebrating our anniversary so were willing to pay a little more. If we hadn't been, there still seemed to be some good options at a lower cost. In the futures, I will definitely be needing to check out some of their desserts!

Should be a $$$ not a $$. Used to be decent for locals. Now too much $$$ to drop in for a casual meal. Food is mediocre. Standing in sometimes long lines to put your food and drink order is is absurd at the prices. Then having to carry drinks to your table and hope to get the attention if a server. Off the list for me. But they still get a big DC and transient crown from lots of marketing.

Burger was only OK - NOT worth $20. I got the chicken pot pie. DELISH. Good portion. Expensive for medium food faire, but frankly, you're in Upperville so I can't say I'm surprised. Love that things are organic and local, however :) Drinks aren't stingy either. Cool decor.

My girlfriend and I enjoyed Sunday Brunch there. I was told to try the Mac & Cheese, which was delicious. The omelets and sweet potato fries were tasty and the service friendly. We were eating outside when a sudden summer storm hit. The staff ensured we had a dry place to sit inside and gave me hot tea on the house to warm up after getting drenched. We had a dessert while waiting for the storm to pass, which was so also great. The atmosphere of a rustic inn complements the menu and service. We enjoyed eating here and hope to try the place again in the winter, where we could cozy up by the fire.

5 stars for the food, authentic British pub stuff. 3 stars for the service, particularly the surly woman manning the door who refused to seat us inside. Though half her tables were empty, and it was well past the lunch hour, she claimed she was "full". By the time we left, most of the same tables were still empty. Me thinks she was just being difficult. As it turns out, we thoroughly enjoyed sitting in the warm sun on the outdoor patio. So take that, surly lady. We still enjoyed our lunch despite you!

What a great tavern ! Located in the middle of horse country right outside of Middleburg VA. ... It's a proper english style pub were you order up at the bar and the food is brought out to your table... The Chicken Pot Pie was exceptional and the hot crusty bread was perfect for a rainy day. I wish I would have had more room for the black berry creme broiler but I over indulged ... can't wait to go back when the leaves turn in a few weeks... swing by on your way to skyline drive!

I would often stop here after church, when I lived out that way, and I always enjoyed myself. The rustic, traditional feel of the place captures the unique ambiance of Upperville perfectly. Pictures of horses and foxes dot the walls and the clientele can often be seen in riding gear. I particularly enjoyed sitting out on the brick garden patio in nice weather. The food itself isn't half bad. All the ingredients are fresh and local, and the food is prepared simply and traditionally. I'm a sucker for fish and chips, and I typically get a plate of theirs whenever I go. The cod is always very fresh and flaky. Their beer list isn't half bad, either. It offers an assortment of English and Irish beers that go very well with the food and atmosphere. All in all, it's a great place to eat if you're in the area.

Nice atmosphere and decent food, but the service is poor. If you are going to have an unusual ordering procedure then be prepared to tell the customer how it's going to work. The kids working in this place are nice enough, but they do the bare minimum. The one adult on staff was a salty little man taking orders behind the bar and he seems to have forgotten that he is in the service industry. Your there to serve, son, please do so without the snooty attitude.

This is a wonderful gem located in Upperville. The restaurant is housed in a 1750s home. The house is quaint and homey. And its old so it is small. When your dining upstairs it feels like the other diners are part of the same group. This can be good or bad depending on how private you want your meal to be. Great place for Valentine's Day.

I only came here for drinks late one night while visiting the family of a good friend. The drinks were good, the barstaff friendly, and the ambience was excellent. I would love to come back here again for dinner, or in the winter. It seems like it would be really cozy.

FIVE TIME LOSER I wish I could agree with the other reviews. I'm a local and I've eaten here about 5 times in the past couple of years. All of these have been dinners and we all ordered from the dinner menu. My friends all tell me the pub food is great and I have to agree that everyone I know who has the pub food loves it. The real problem is the dinner menu - yes, I should have learned from my prior experience, but I keep thinking the next time will be great. Ugh. I have run the gamut of Osso Buco coming to my table with ABSOLUTELY NO MEAT on the bone. When I sent it back to the kitchen, it took almost 30 minutes to bring me a replacement steak I ordered. The steak was overcooked and COLD. The wait staff was young and indifferent to my bad experience. No ADULT SUPERVISOR was evident except for the bar staff. On my most recent occasion to visit I ordered the pork chops and my wife the chicken burger. The chops were cold, tough, and sinewy. So much for Organic food, eh? My wife's chicken burger was bland, the fries cold and indifferent. Why, oh WHY can't we get a good meal? I will only enter this restaurant in the future with the intention of eating from the pub menu and ONLY if friends or out of town guests want to go. I always want local businesses to thrive, but the consistently indifferent service and cold and unpredictable menu will keep me away.

We love driving about the country side with our out-of-town visitors, and invaribly wonder through Upperville, bringing us right past the Hunter's Head Tavern. Always a delight to see and enter, the pub gives just that right feeling of 'the old world'. We try it again, and then again and then one time more. Always thinking it is going to be what it should, it has disappointed us one too many times. Because, even through the atmosphere of the Tavern is just what you are looking for on a cold winter night or on the patio on a breezy summer evening, it really must get down to the food. While boasting a 'farm to table' menu, creativity is minimal as the Chef offers the regulars of belly warming dishes like Pot Pie, Bangers and Beef Stew. That can be great, but nothing is a hot as it should be; nothing is a good as it should be. If the kitchen does care, then there seems to be a disconnect between the mechanical waitstaff and pride in what ends up on the table. Even when we have requested repeatedly, ' if I order that pot pie, will it be hot? will the crust be crispy' it comes out soggy and mildly warm. Once, seeing a beautiful steak at a near by table, we order and ours is cold, grey, tough and tasteless. The Chef's specials, that opportunity to 'do their thing' doesn't work either. We take a group of five guests there and not one person thought their meal was exceptional. The service was dismissive. Bad odds, that. Seems so with everything we have tried. Like I said, we kept trying to make it work, but this place just does not deliver.

Went for dinner last night. The food was mediocre, at best. Fish and chips were overcooked, steaks had no flavor, chicken fried steak was grissly and tough, shepherds pie was not bad but could gave been a bit more spicy. The service was good. The beer selection was good and it was fresh. The atmosphere was good for a tavern, however, the noise level was very high - I feel for the wait staff. This was my second visit. My last one was for lunch and it was not bad but the beer was flat - a no-no for a Scotsman. last night was my last visit.

My wife and I visited Louden County during our honeymoon and stopped into HHT on the first night. HHT had been recommended by the B&B we stayed at. We were drawn by the buy local policy they were known by. When you walk in, you place your order at a booth immediately to the right of the bar. The Menus, however, are located on the walls around the bar. While it was not a problem for us, this could make it difficult on a more crowded night. Too many good "options" were abound. They served every good bar food from Sheppard's Pie, Chicken Pot Pie, and Beef Stew to Filet Mignon, Vegetable Pasta and Tuna Salad. I must indulge here that we enjoyed the food the first night and (due to a lack of decent eateries in the area) that we attended a second night. For an appetizer, we thoroughly enjoyed the creamy artichoke dip and for dinner the vegetable stew and Sheppard's pie one night and a tuna salad and Filet Mignon the second. Every meal was very tasteful and the cooks definitely know how to present and season the food (something that seems to have been lost by most establishments now days). The rare steak was a surprise in the midst of the country, but absolutely needed. The food comes fast as orders are all placed upon your arrival. The beer is good. A small assortment of the more popular micro-brews along with all good old generic "yellow" beers. The bottom line: if you're in wine tasting Loudon County and you need some quality cooking or even bar food, this is THE place to come. Don't miss it.

My number one tip for this restaurant is to skip the appetizers. You're given a large portion of hearty and delicious bread and butter after you order, it's very filling, plus the appetizers aren't that thrilling. We ordered okay fried oysters and plain 'ole boring sweet potato fries, which weren't seasoned at all. Other appetizers spotted on the menu were artichoke dip and salads - the only draw being that the greens are local and organic/sustainably grown. The restaurant is pub style, but is made up of several rooms as the building probably used to be a house. We were seated in the room containing the bar, which is where you're made to order your food, so once a line formed and people began to wait, it became a bit crowded and loud for us. The food is great, though not spectacular, with very healthy portions and rich ingredients. I had the chicken pot pie which, at $11.95, seemed to come in a rather small portion. Upon noticing the 3" thick biscuit topping and super rich pie filling, I was stuffed by the last bite. My partner ordered the meatloaf, which came in an outrageous portion. It could make 3 meals for a moderate eater, 2 for someone with healthy appetite. The meatloaf tasted good, but the large side order of mashed potatoes were bland, having only butter in them, and the side of cooked veggies was outrageously small and cooked to death. The wine and beer selections were impressive, with many local wines to choose from and some really posh choices as well. We both had the Anniversary Guiness, which came in full pint glasses and were reasonably priced. All in all it was a good meal, I plan to return to the restaurant and enjoy it's great ambiance - pewter candlesticks on the tables, wood everywhere, old English pub paintings on the walls and fireplaces in every room - and sample the rest of it's pub menu. The restaurant has a pub fare menu and a second menu of more expensive fare such as $27 steaks and $14 lasagna. If you're in the area (its somewhat remote, though in the middle of the mountains and vineyard county), do check it out, and reservations are probably a good idea if you want to eat at night on a weekend.

This was the closest thing I've found to a British Pub in the states, which is a high compliment indeed. The food is all locally and responsibly sourced and delicious. The ordering procedure may be slightly odd the first time, but the staff were very happy to assist and explain--I don't really see why it would cause much consternation (and in fact, was charming). It's a beautiful building, and seems to be popular among locals. Everything we had was excellent: burger delicious and done to perfection, and a scrumptous chicken pot pie. Malt vinegar and brown sauce were available. The beer selection was respectable, and they use proper pint and half pint glasses. We're definitely looking forward to teturning!

I want to love this place... and I ALMOST do. The pub bread is amazing as is the chicken pot pie. Alas, the fish and chips miss the mark. The fish was oily and overly battered. The fries were fantastic, though, and the burgers are solid. I love that so many of the ingredients are locally sourced and the quirky nature of the building. I'm looking forward to going back to try their hot brown. A word to the wise, this place gets really busy on weekend days when the weather is nice so a reservation could save you from disappointment.

Incredible little place with great atmosphere and great food. We had the chicken pot pie and the chicken fried steak. Both are highly recommended. The pot pie had a delicious biscuit crust on top, and the stew was thick, hearty and rich. The Chicken Fried steak was not skimpy on the batter and perfectly done. The mashed potatoes were homestyle and flavorful. And the warm bread they serve was fantastic. Service was good, but a bit slow. But really, you're not in a rush here, especially if you're outside on a beautiful day!

A wonderful drive down route 50 to this quaint tavern right on the road. Easy to find. Went here with sis and niece, Suz. Suz lives in Arlington, and as I am from San Diego, I said, "Sure let's have British food!". OK, I gotta say I am not a fan of English food. I ordered what I thought was the closest thing to a BLT ( I knew I should've got the pot pie!). My 'Brown Turkey Sandwich' was a couple slices of fresh turkey (good) and top of white bread, with yellow gravy on top. On top of that was a tomato and bacon. It was good, for sure. Yay! I was afraid at first. Sis ordered the pot pie, she said it was good. Suz had the beef and potatoes, looked & smelled good. The iced tea was great and service was good. So, although I can't say this made me a fan of British food, I would go back to this place if I am in the area gain. Minus one star for the bathroom.

This was my 2nd visit to this establishment. First time was for lunch in the early Spring and it was pretty good. This time went for dinner on 4th of July. Couldn't sit outside because of the flies. Inside, there was a dead fly on one of our plates. The restrooms were full of flies. Gross. The food was just OK. Bangers and mash were mediocre. My friend had to send her rubbed pork back as it was so overcooked and dry, it was inedible. The staff agreed w/this and comped her meal. I would never go back there in the Summer and never again for dinner. Good place for beer.

I enjoyed the food and ambiance, although it is a bit farther out than I'd want it to be. Lots of organic options on the menu. The food isn't amazing, but it's quite solid; my family enjoyed our choices very much, but weren't wowed. I especially liked the complimentary bread and butter, and thought my fish and chips were well prepared. The fries fell kind of flat to me, but they weren't bad.

We had a wonderful time at this pub. It oozes history and the food was fantastic. We had pub grub, and the bangers and mash, shepards pie, beef stew (really awesome) and fish and chips hit the spot. Wondeful atmosphere.

Good Irish based foods and a rustic Irish atmosphere in Upperville, VA on the main drag. Excellent beer selection as well covering the standard Irish lagers and stouts with a few unique extras. Service has been bad here three out of the four times I've been here, especially if sitting at the bar where you can be blatantly ignored. The food order process is also odd here where you normally have to make your order indoors first thru a side door and then another side order window. The owners would be well advised to figure out a better method, especially for newcomers and also do a better job of training the majority of their staff to be more customer attentive. Due to the bad service, I do not plan to be back anytime soon.

Great find if you find yourself near Upperville, VA. This tavern environment offers a traditional historical feel with ordering pub style at the bar. They have a good selection of food including several clearly marked vegetarian offerings. The food portions are large so order wisely. The food came quickly and was quite good. The Swiss chard was delicious (and probably healthy). The mac and cheese is yummy. They have indoor and outdoor seating. With regard to the beer selection, they a somewhat standard but uninteresting selection of beers. No local beers were available (Yuengling was the closest offering). Also this beautiful tavern feel dies for a hand pulled cask or two to add to their draft list. Overall, well recommended.

First a disclaimer; I'm a Brit. I've eaten all over the USA and of course at many British themed pubs. I know exactly what a British pub should have and this place has it in spades. I've travelled all over this country, LA, New York, Chicago, St. Louis, Hawaii, Florida, Cedar Rapids (yikes!!!). This is by far THE MOST AUTHENTIC BRITISH PUB I'VE EVER BEEN TO IN THE USA!!! Bubble and squeak? Check. Cod and chips with MUSHY PEAS? Check (awesome mushy peas too). Great beer, lovely beer garden (Ivy climbing up stone walls. A red UK phone box out front, clean tables, high hedges...are we in West Sussex?!! Just for a moment we were). Bloody 'ell!! Great service. Easy and convenient bar experience, We took our two dogs on the patio. They sat quietly in the peaceful and pleasant environment while we noshed on cod, real mushy peas and thick chip shop style chips. The staff saw hat we had two panting dogs and brought out fresh water for them. It was like 93F. SO THOUGHTFUL. These folks know that people love their pets and made us and our pups feel very welcome. We are going there again tomorrow. We are going to have the bangers and mash and sticky pudding. Highly recommended!!!!

HHT really leaves me scratching my head. Like, why is the service so awesome, and yet at the same time, the food can be so lackluster? I happened to go there twice for lunch during my visit to NoVa. My first go-around included a pulled pork sandwich which ended up being too sweet and tasted like whiskey. I tried a few other things like a frisee salad, weinerschnitzel, some sides, chocolate cake, and banana pudding. Absolutely everything was as boring as dirt. I'm not sure if my tastes became incredibly snobby after returning from Europe, but this was some elementary type stuff. Second time was much, much better. I had a bacon-wrapped veal meatloaf which turned out to be really tasty. So I'm just like "eh" about the whole place. The rotating menu is great, but I'm not sure if it's enough to get me to go back personally, you know? Still worth a visit as you will probably have the pants charmed off of you!

We used to really enjoy coming here, but have noticed that the past few times have each gotten progressively worse. Most recently we went on a busy Saturday and had awful service. Had to ask others for water refills, watched other customers in the same area as us, being served by the same waiter having to go up to the bar to get refills of beer and wine. Food came to us cold. In all, we were NOT impressed and were actually VERY disappointed on this trip.

We spent the day hitting wineries and distilleries in the area of Middleburg, and grabbed a reservation here on the advice of a friend. And SO GLAD WE DID! From the decor, to the service, to the food, this was the perfect place for us to end our day trip! The ordering system is a bit "odd" for the environment, but honestly -- it totally works. It allows you to feel casual, but well-treated at the same time. We'll be back!

**** 4 1/2**** Nestled in Upperville, which is on the way to Middleburg, is what could be described as a local landmark. Hunter's Head Tavern is unique in that it partners with a local farm (Ayrshire Farms) and uses organic non-gmo, and local meats and produce. Essentially farm to table. Given all of that, Hunter's Head puts out some of the most delicious food I have had in the area coupled with excellent service. I went here for the first time during Mother's Day weekend. My mom had been here a few times and loved it. When you pull up, it looks like you are driving to a house (you're at the right place). They have a small parking lot but there is also street parking. I made reservations, which I am told is suggested because they can fill up on weekends. There is seating outside (dog friendly which is a perk), inside on the first and second floors. I love the vibe. It's full of old furniture, some mismatched but makes sense and fits together. When I say old, I mean more on the antique side. Their menu contains standard pub food mixed with their seasonal items. They write their menu on a big chalkboard wall by the entrance. It is also conveniently located near the bar and where you go and order your food. Lucky for us, because we were a big party, they took our food orders at the table. For a pub/tavern, they have a fairly large menu and it took us awhile to decide what we wanted. My parents ordered spinach artichoke dip and calamari as appetizers. Then we ordered our meals: fish and chips with sweet potato fries (my mom, aunt, and family friend), veal (dad), shepherd's pie (my sister), burger (my other sister), French dip (fiance), and chicken pot pie (me). While we were waiting, they brought out their freshly baked bread. Ohh. My. Goodness. The bread is delicious. It comes warm out of the oven, crispy and with a crust on the outside, and soft on the inside. Also went well with the spinach artichoke dip I might add. As for the main course, everyone seemed to enjoy their food (there wasn't too much talking at this point). I loved my chicken pot pie. It was presented differently in that they had the pie crust on top of the filling (almost like a soup). It was delicious. The crust was light and airy. The filling was creamy, delicious, definitely a perfect comfort food dish. Service was very good throughout our meal. Our server apologized when my fiance noticed something wrong with his meal. She not only comped the meal but gave us a choice for dessert. We decided on their sticky buns with a bourbon pecan glaze. Perfect gooey choice. Overall an awesome dining experience.

The people were very attentive and nice. Service with a smile. But I found the food to be very average and, along with the wine, very overpriced. I guess the old house atmosphere is supposed to get you to overlook that. But I had trouble with it. Not likely to return.

Just had one of the most memorable meals of my life there - but not because it was good. Unfortunately, everyone in my family ordered their version of eggs benedict, which was an overcooked, very salty sausage on top of a cardboard platform they called a biscuit topped by an egg with a scant dollop of hollandaise sauce - the other part of the meal that was acceptable. And lucky me, with coffee for each of us the bill only came to $97 for the four of us with a 20% tip, which was definitely a gratuitous gratuity given their lack of service. Do not eat here. You will be disappointed.

Just want to start out by saying this place has the best ambiance-whether you sit on the lovely patio or inside the cozy house. If you want to have a nice relaxing visit with an old friend or a loved one this is your place. You never feel rushed. I've been coming here for years & have never tried the bubble & squeak, when I asked the waitress she recommended it topped with chicken & cheese. Since I'm vegetarian I opted just for the cheese and she did not steer me wrong. Delicious layer of mashed potatoes that covers sautéed veggies, might sound boring or bland, but it's not-get it immediately!!!! Even if you're vegan or don't like cheese don't worry it would still be fabulous without. This is one of the few restaurants around that is truly farm to table, so why complain about paying higher prices for high quality food? If you want cheap food then eat at McDonald's-you get what you pay for, I'm sure you wouldn't cancel your cable bill because it's too expensive, what's more important?!?!?

Had originally planned to go to another restaurant in Middleburg, but it was closed for the 4th of July. So we searched for other places, and found this British pub, and I'm so glad we did! The food was fantastic, the staff was friendly, and sitting outside in the garden area on a beautiful day was supreme. I loved the wooden tables and oversized chairs, and the rather interesting ordering system involving a wooden spoon (the host will explain the ordering system when you arrive if you've not dined there before). In terms of food, I'd recommend sticking to traditional British fare when ordering here. I made the mistake of ordering the salmon with mango and pineapple salsa. While the salmon was pretty overcooked, everything else on the dish was tasty. The order of Mac and cheese that the three of us split was by far the star of the meal. For dessert, we had the sour cherry pie with ice cream. I kid you not - I would drive all the way to Middleburg just for that pie. Maybe the Mac and cheese too. Also highly recommend ordering one of the after-dinner coffees. I had mine with Jameson, and they are pretty heavy-handed there with the liquor. Great pub! I'll be going back again.

First of all, the people here were very nice. With that said, this food is some of the most overpriced/least impressive quality I've come across in the NoVa area. Seriously, skip this place and keep driving 10 minutes down the road, and there will be so many better options. $21 for a very run-of-the-mill french dip sandwich, $20 for a cheeseburger that was ordered medium rare and arrived medium well, and $8 for the small caesar salad, which was the tiniest thing in the world and hardly worth $5, let alone $8. Really, people? Houston's - a higher end steak house - french dip sandwich is only $18 and it's one of the most amazing things you can eat there. All that, AND I have to order my own food and drinks at the bar before I sit down, AND you're serving WELL WATER?! That tastes and smells like well water? These prices, and you can't even filter the water coming into your building? Something is wrong here. Stay away.

Used to by one of my favorite places but after yesterday I can't say I will ever go back. There was something on the menu that I needed to be explained but the girl working near the menu area didn't seem to know what it was or how to sell it to us. I ordered something else and was seated in an awful location next to the spot where people placed orders yet there were a ton other tables available. The waiter never made eye contact. He never filled our waters. Food was overpriced. As I got towards the end of my salad I found a dead fly in it. We couldn't get the attention of any staff, not even when we were paying! The waiter just tried to be invisible by quickly sneaking our bill on the table so we just paid and left. I'm so grossed out. Sloppy kitchen staff and arrogant wait staff. A day later I can still feel the possibility of a fly crawling around in my mouth.

Pro tip: the menu and order location are inside. The door is thru the patio - follow the brick path from the parking lot! This is a cute location, with a large patio There is a nice cozy inside with fire places for the cooler months, and the wonderful patio for the warmer months. Our table stuck with the weinersnitzel and the fish and chips and were very happy with our choices! The local beer choices are definitely a nice boon. When you order they hand you a spoon with a number, you place that in the empty wine bottle on your table. They bring you your food and when you are done they bring you your bill after that! Not positive if you should pay at the register or not, but they will definitely take your money up there! There is a nice pup menu, a good selection of salads and some entrees. The prices are high, but the location is adorable and staff is friendly. So go for an enjoyable meal and know it wont be cheap!

I like the English pub approach, varied and inventive menu, and ambiance/ outdoor seating. We got 2 steaks - filet was med rate as ordered. Strip was a tad overdone- closer to medium. Good sides. Service was a bit off, but not horrendous. All in all enjoyable, and I'd go back. Be advised -- there must not be very many places in the area. reservations on Friday or Saturday are very difficult to come by.

I along with 7 of us had dinner here this past Tuesday for my Mom's birthday. I've been once before and sat out on the patio. For this dinner, we were seated inside. It's really small inside, but very nice, has a pub feel. It's like they pulled this out of some small town over in England and plunked it down in Upperville. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. Our waiter was Jackson and he rocked. Very energetic and we didn't have anything go wrong with him. They have a good selection of beer, including local VA craft beer which is nice to see. The food was really good. I had the Fish and Chips and it was outstanding. My wife had a salad which was really good and my Mom the French Dip. For an appetizer, we had the calamari. It was really good but felt that we could have probably gotten more of it for the price we paid. It is a bit pricey overall, but the food and atmosphere is really good.

The chicken pot pie was good but when your expecting a bowl and it is maybe a cup for the price was not good. The mussels had no flavor and were not cooked enough to even open. They had to be sent back. The service really sucked. Have no plans to return.

Indulgent comfort foods in large portions. Great rotation of desserts, too. Farm-to-table humane and organic ingredients are what keeps me coming back. Cheerful service and wonderful outdoor seating area, to boot! Docked a star for the fact that I noticed a cockroach on two separate visits --- both times near the chalk menu board. (Quite certain it was a cockroach and not another type of bug as I lived with an infestation for a year and grew familiar with my unwelcome company.) Still, I'd return. (Already been there five times --- all enjoyable experiences.) There aren't many restaurants in the NoVA area (say, compared to Portland, Oregon) with an admirable husbandry philosophy like Sandy Lerner's for Ayrshire Farms. Bonus: They have a doggie/kitty menu for the furry ones! High-quality, raw meat --- my dog preferred it cooked, which I did after bringing it home in a --- womp, womp --- doggie bag.

I love the idea of eating at Revolutionary Era taverns and, on that note, Hunter's Head Tavern really delivered. You stand in line, order your food, grab a beer, and have a seat. Your food will be brought out to you. We started with the house bread and better. It was soft, crusty, chewy, everything that bread should be. Served with fresh veggies, it was a nice way to start the meal. For appetizers, we ordered the fried pickles, onion rings, and sweet potato biscuits. The biscuits might have been a little overdone, but the honey butter was really nice with them. The pickles were good, but the remoulade dipping sauce was very nice. The onion rings were just what I expected--fresh, thick-cut, and nicely battered. For our meal, we got the fish and chips and the weinerscnitzel. The fish was nicely cooked and battered and served with a mountain of fries. It was good, not great. It was pretty much what I expect fish and chips to be, but nothing that put it over into "great" territory. The weinerschnitzel was a little dry and was served with decent mashed potatoes and an unappealing veggie side of green beans, red bell pepper, and tiny shreds of cauliflower. The caper sauce was nice with the schnitzel, but not enough to make up for the other shortcomings. Overall, I would see this as a nice place to start or end the evening. The appetizers were very nice and a beer or two with those fried pickles could definitely lift up a bad day. I would also happily go back to try a dessert or three. The entrees, on the other hand, were fine food, but, in my opinion, not necessarily worth a special trip.

I love this place, I can never check in when I'm here because the cell reception is crap. Locally sourced ingredients: meats, veggies, cheeses, etc The food never disappoints, the beer selection is decent, and the devour is really nice. Feels like a real English tavern inside. It's a little pricey, but reasonably so based on the quality of their food, and that most of it is locally sourced. I hope one day to attend the Easter Brunch, it looks epic.

We used to love this place. I'm not sure if they've changed owners, but the food was horrendous. Clearly made hours beforehand and reheated. The waitstaff was great, but can't makeup for the bad food! Additionally, they have a MASSIVE Fly problem. It's disgusting and probably something the health department should look into. I've been here several times over the years, but can't ever see myself going back. Yuck.

Simply awesome! We stopped in for just a simple snack, and to check out the place. We were blown away! The bread is just addicting! The sweet potato biscuits are incredible as well. The Mac and cheese is great! Not the best I have had, but definitely on my top list! The process is a little different. The place is very Europe - inspired. That means you order first, then the wait staff seats you and takes over from there. The staff is super efficient and friendly. Especially with newcomers. The ambience is what sells the place! Old, quiant, chatming, and even romantic. You feel like you are dining in an historic hunting lodge. Just incredible! I highly recommend this place!

Hunters Head is a great cozy place to come for lunch or dinner, especially in the fall and winter when there is a fire going in the fireplace. That's when this English style pub with high end ingredients shines. During the summer and when it's busy I'd rather go elsewhere as I don't want to deal with the crowds, unavailable parking or other people's dogs on the patio. The menu is a good mix of pub grub and changes monthly to match what's seasonably available. Some things are a great value and reasonably priced, others like the burgers are way too overpriced. I get that it's organic and farm to table, but I'm not going to spend $15-20 for burger.

Love this place. Such a pretty drive too! The building is adorable - and so fun to go during warm weather and you can eat outside in the little garden area. First of all the bread they serve before the meal is AMAZING! My mom raved and raved about their bread and rightfully so! Flakey and crispy on the outside and soft and airy on the inside. My life goal is to find a duplicate recipe for that bread. I love their pub greens salad with chicken. It is a very simple salad but the dressing is amazing! So fresh and flavorful. I'm not one to eat just a salad at a meal but I Love that salad. And be sure to try their chocolate chip bread pudding with the bourbon hard sauce. I kid you not, I dream of that dish! And to top it all off their service is always splendid. If you happen to be in VA make sure to find the time to make a drive to this place! Obviously I'm a Brit so this place is right up my alley, and I feel very qualified to comment. 1) The big plus. One of the only places in NOVA with a decent beer garden. No not just a patio, as people road here just love eat on the sidewalk. The beer garden kid perfect. 2) The food is great and the price point is good for the quality and the area. 2a) The chips could be a bit fatter, but at least they are real potato and not a bag of frozen fries thrown in a frier. 2b) Forget the Chicken Pot Pie you need some proper pies - like the ones down the road in Vienna at Pure Pasty. 2c) The fish and chips is my go to. Although please please please do a version with just one big piece of fish! 3) The beer selection needs attention - more craft local beers - who by the way do some good approximations to English Ales! Get some of them in. 4) The service has never been anything short of wonderful, good work that team. Even when I turn with all of my tribe who are noisy and messy. If you a Brit missing the country pub - here it is. Same type of food, same atmosphere.

We used Hunter's Head Tavern for our rehearsal dinner and, since that weekend was such a whirlwind, I remember very few things about the rehearsal dinner, but I know my guests were happy and liked the unique atmosphere Hunter's Head offered. They accommodated us well and I remember enjoying the food. That said, I wanted to have another meal there with just my husband and I. With our work schedules, it will sometimes be a month or so before we have a meal together, so I wanted to make his birthday special. We went up during the Upperville Horse Show. I'm not sure if that had anything to do with the influx of people. We brought our dog and, because of this, took turns ordering. Since you have to go to the bar to order, I stayed with the dog and sipped my drink while my husband ordered a steak. When he returned, I went inside to order my meal, so I could also see the specials posted . It took forever - only one person handling closing checks, food orders, and bar drinks, and the servers were standing around bored. By the time I'd gotten through the line, my husband had gotten his steak and it turned cold. I believe they rushed my order to try to accommodate me, however, most of this meal was spent apart from the person I wanted to dine with. We've decided we won't return, because there are plenty of other options around that provide unique food, unique environment, and doesn't compromise the opportunity to visit and catch up with each other. I do like the quirk of ordering at the bar, but I couldn't figure out why the servers couldn't have helped with pouring drinks (maybe their ages?) or even closing out checks - something to help manage the rush.

Reeaaallllyyyyy good food. My husband and I went here last week for lunch. Kinda weird we had to order our food at the bar then sit down once we received our drinks. It was great they had boiled peanuts complimentary. My husband enjoyed that being that he's from Georgia. I really loved the old atmosphere. But everything was really dirty. They gave us spoons with numbers on them so that the waitress knew where we were sitting. The spoon was so greasy. A long with the table. They sat us at a 3 top table and it was very awkward in size. The legs of the table caused us not to be able to move closer to the table. So as I write this I think maybe I shouldn't have given 4 stars as far as the complaints I mentioned. But the food made EVERYTHING worth it.

A couple of reasons Hunter's Head in an interesting find: - it is a very authentic English pub style restaurant with a more than adequate drink menu. - it was created and currently owned by the co-founder of Cisco. - the patio area is beautiful and on the right day can make the place into a dining gem. - the ordering process (in which you pick your table, go order at the bar, and then come back to your table and wait for the food to be delivered) was an interesting and, once understood, fun twist. Juliet at I got chicken pot pie and strawberry spinach salad with steak, both of which were fairly good. The pot pie was unique in that the puff pastry was placed on top of the pie filling in the bowl as more of an after thought than anything. At first I was turned off by this "deconstructed" feel, but it ended up allowing for more customizable crust to filling ratio than otherwise possible. To drink we got a strawberry lime martini (good) and one of the many things on draft. Would suggest especially in good weather when you can be seated outdoors.

Update, today's selections were far superior, and I was very pleased. Thanks for the help Hunters... very pleased to give you another star! And the service was far better too... keep up the great work! (Previous review) Been here many times, and the food was always excellent. Today I went and the food was okie - but the selections were a lot a fewer, and not that inspiring. I did enjoy my shrimp in angel hair pasta, but it was not as nice as previous selections. Also, I usually can find two or three things to decide between, not so this time. Also, the staff really needs to be thinned out soon. I don't mind the manager looking around, but they shouldn't try to be the center of attention. Also, someone (heavyset woman) kept looking around and getting in the way - but didn't seem to do much herself. Bottom line: Good food, but lowered a star from previous expectations.

This little enclave offers a cozy retreat inside or summery open-air seating outside. Either way the atmosphere is quaint and relaxing. This isn't a place to come watch a game or get b'd out, rather it's a perfect place for a mid-afternoon meal and pint while touring the surrounding VA wineries. Ordering is a little weird in that you place your order right when you come in the door, but then wait staff take over after you've sat down. Can't wait to come back!

We had a very pleasant lunch at Hunter's Head Tavern. It is so peaceful driving through the Virginia countryside that by the time you arrive you are in another place mentally. The Tavern is decorated in a rustic style befitting the age of the original building. You order at the bar. The menu is British pub fare done well. The beer selection is impressive. We ordered calimari which was prepared with an old bay taste. The shepard's pie was as good as I've tasted. The fish and chips were good though the chips could have had more crisp.

Great place and great food. Real quick service. You feel like you're in a pub in England or Ireland. Don't let the pub name fool you. The food is delicious and the price is great! If you're in a hurry or just want to save or try something new, skip some of the more pricey places in the area and eat here. You won't regret it.

Well, just don't go out of your way to eat here. It's kind of the place you go to when you're out of the way (it's probably the best restaurant within a 20-min drive from Delaplane/Markham). What makes it worth it: + The local-ness of it all. I'd come here just to check out the pub and alcoholic offerings, i.e. a bunch of wines from surrounding wineries and beers and ciders from Charlottesville, etc. The local meats and house-cured bacon is a good draw. + Desserts. OMG. Just sit down with that starter basket of warm fresh bread and order a dessert and you'd be good to go. The peach cobbler--warm, sweet, with a biscuit-y, cake-y top. The sticky toffee pudding was UNMATCHED. Share it with someone or go halfsies on the peach cobbler with it because both desserts are quite rich and sticky toffee pudding is the richest. It's sitting in a pool of custard. Nuff said. Go. Go get it. + The atmosphere. Charming pub style inside, outside dining area surrounded by trees. + Was that a bottomless glass of limeade and lemonade? Hmmmslurp. 0 If you're getting an entree for Sunday brunch, the egg dishes are the way to go: the quiche, the eggs benedict/florentine (you can't go wrong with hollandaise)! 0 Fruit sides are unremarkable but include pineapple and strawberries. Points. What's bringing it down: - You don't order at the table, but you queue up in a line with the menu listed on a blackboard (charming display, but I'd just like to sit down and pore over the menu, thank you very much). If there's a long line, it's just inconvenient for everyone. And then it makes it confusing at the end because where do you pay? At that same pay-booth? Or at the table? Gah! - Prices. Just a little bit steep. I think I paid $12? $14? for a salad and bread coated in cheese (a quite tasty beery cheese, though). The salad had a nice variety of greens but it was your standard vinaigrette-dressed bunch of ruffage. - Points for having a Scotch egg, but unfortunately the Scotch egg was dry and could use a little more juiciness and oomph. Also, it was paired with a CRAZY spicy mustard. That thing should come with a warning sign. Also, one scotch egg order came with it and one didn't... weird. Which was the mistake plate? (Methinks the former, but the restaurant would probably disagree.) ++Oh, and the CRAYANGLES. I'm not a kid but I was enamored by those things.

Sadly the patio has gone to the dogs. Literally. barking dogs interrupt a tranquil evening while their owners lovingly cater to their beck and call totally disrespecting the 30 diners seated around them. won't come back thanks to the black lab who barked incessantly at the dog in the baby carrier at the next table. geez. get a life.

This was my first time eating here and overall things went well. The food was delicious and there was a wide selection. Did not have to wait very long before being told where our table was and that we needed to order our food and drinks at the bar. After sitting down our waiter introduced himself and brought us our bread which was pretty darn good. The food did not take very long to come out of the kitchen and was correct and hot. After our mains, we decided to have dessert and I have to say the sticky toffee pudding was amazing especially with the hot custard. The wait staff was very attentive and did not let the drinks go empty before asking if a refill was needed. The atmosphere was really nice and reminded me of time spent over in England. You were able to eat either outside or inside and they even allowed dogs if eating in the outside section. The place was easy to find and there was plenty of parking. The best thing to do would be to get there early if going for lunch, less of a hassle and you do not have to park on the side of the roadway. The only issue I noticed was that for a place billing themselves as an English tavern/pub, the selection of beers and ales was not very good. Only one ale from England, the rest were from the States and there were no real cask ales, something you would expect to find at a place like this. If this was corrected would go a long way to add an additional star to the review. Overall a good experience and would definitely go back for another lunch/dinner there. The food was good and correct and the wide selection was greatly welcomed. The friendly staff also made the experience warm and inviting.

Great ambiance in this place. The ordering system is a bit strange for the price you would expect to sit and be waited on. I would imagine it could be a mess when it is crowded. I had the chicken and dumplings. They were delicious but the portions were on the small side. For a group of four (three had the chicken and dumplings) and one had a steak, one blanton's bourbon and a glass of wine and two deserts it came to $145 before tip. It's worth it for a special occasion but couldn't afford to eat there often. I highly recommend.

Great 18th century BRITISH pub with authentic food and ambience. Being English ourselves we wondered why there was a British red telephone box outside what Yelp describes as an 'American (new) restaurant'. Lots of history explained at the table with ghosts too!! A great find, giving us a taste of home.

When you come here, you're going to pay for the atmosphere. So you better really like the atmosphere, because otherwise a $20 cheeseburger with simple toppings are going to enrage you. Here's the thing about Hunter's Head Tavern - it's cute, the patio is delightful, the staff, while very young and a bit inexperienced, are exceptionally friendly. The ordering process is fine if there is no crowd, but absurd if there is a crowd (if I have to stand in a line for 10 minutes just to put my order in, then go sit at my table to wait for the food, do I still tip the staff the normal amount?). On to the food: I adore when places source their ingredients locally. In fact, I am generally willing to pay a premium for locally sourced high quality meats. So a $14.50 burger with good local beef is doable for me. What's absolutely NOT doable, however, is $1.50 for every topping you add, with the toppings being the most run-of-the-mill standard things. $1.50 for a slice of weird processed American cheese?! $1.50 for onions? I mean, really, come on. At the end, a cheeseburger with mushrooms and onions pulled in at $20, and let me tell you, the burger was completely just "meh" in terms of taste. Dog friendly patio.

Quite charming place for a lunch when visiting the horse country or on the way to the mountains. After ordering at the bar, we went to a table and were served a hunk of freshly baked bread. The quiche was good, served with a generous green salad, and the pint of draft hard cider was a fine accompaniment. The dessert menu was enticing, but we were not hungry at that point. The setting is pleasant with "olde" touches.

Food was delicious, ambiance was fun and relaxed and they even mailed me back my credit card when my tired self promptly left it behind. We are already planning on returning and trying their tea service!

Went on a limb, and tried out this great joint. Parking is limited and had to park off a side street on the grass. The place was packed with outside seating having a 15 minute wait time, however inside was immediate seating. Decided on inside dining and the ordering style was a little fast food-ish for my taste. Don't pick the seating inside if its nice outside because flies are a nuisance to deal with inside. Overheard a couple stating that they had reservations, but still had to wait for outside seating. The host informed them that inside seating was reserved, and outside seating is first come first serve. I ordered the scotch eggs which came out great. The watermelon martini wasn't up to par compared to what I tried at a different establishment. The server was very attentive except for the elephant in the room, which were the flies that we kept on swatting away. Upon leaving no one acknowledged that I was leaving which was odd sine the server and host both helped me earlier. Overall an acceptable experience, i would love to try it out again outside though.

Humane meats and local food. Build a burger or grab bangers and mash. Cool place to bring people. This is where the locals dine. And the service is really good.

Sweater weather local drink is awesome. I recommend the weinersnitsel. Very old look, quiet, great decorations. Eat inside or out.

Love this place! My husband and I usually head over here in the winter months because they have a great selection of comfort food on the menu. They did not disappoint- chicken and dumplings- just like your grandmother makes :) we always order the sticky toffee pudding. The staff is always friendly. I advise to make a reservation during the weekends.

I loved this place! Very authentic British Pub. The menu had so many choices! I ended up getting fish and chips and my husband got the Schnitzel. Both were very good! I loved the atmosphere. There was both inside and outside seating . We chose inside to I joy the charm of the place. We had fantastic service and everyone was so nice! The only negative was that the parking was a little tight. We can't wait to go back!

Love this place! Relaxing casual atmosphere in a renovated historic house. The food is consistently good and is sourced from Ayrshire Farm, a local certified organic, certified humane farm. Great burgers, delicious chicken (heritage breed, organic, free range), lots of great salads and other dishes and fantastic desserts. Ask to sit by the fireplace in winter months or outdoors in warmer months. They even allow dogs on the outdoor patio and have a dog menu featuring their own pet food.

This is a great place to go for English style Pub Fare. There bangers and mash and their fish and chips are both exquisite, however you should not expect to go here and order anything that is not on their pub fare menu for a mild price. However, as far as quality of the food and the atmosphere, you will be readily willing to pay for both of those after your experience.

This place was gorgeous both inside and out! When I tried to get a table, one of the servers could tell it was my first time there and explained the ordering procedure. You choose your food from the menu on a chalkboard, order at the bar, and get a wooden spoon that you stick up on your table. The food was overpriced and under-seasoned, but still, I'd go back. If you want a quiet, cozy place to open a bottle of wine and catch up with friends, the patio is the perfect place. Service and atmosphere were impeccable!

Another awesome meal at Hunters Head Tavern. I started out by ordering their spicy Margarita infused with jalapeños. The bread here is something to look forward to. I went with my old time favorite bubble and squeak and Rarebit with salad. A little dash of Tabasco and it was perfect! Even though I was stuffed, I couldn't resist ordering their banana pudding with graham crackers crumbles desert, apparently a staff favorite. Would definitely do an hour ride from my home again.

My husband and I have been huge fans of Hunter's Head for a long time. We drive 30 miles each way to get there from our house. The food is always good. The atmosphere is quaint and a little quirky (in a good way). The outdoor patio is such a delightful place to eat. Unfortunately, the last 2 times we have come here the service we have received on the patio has been awful. A few weeks ago the waitress acted like we were invisible. She walked by our table numerous times but as hard as we tried to catch her eye just to get some water we were unsuccessful. My husband actually had to go inside and get water at the bar for us. And he grabbed the drinks we had ordered 15 minutes earlier which had just been sitting there waiting for our horrible waitress. She barely smiled at anyone the entire time we were there and only visited our table twice~~~one time because we literally flagged her down and the second time was to bring us the check. Funny thing is, we would have ordered more drinks if she had only asked. So we figured this was just a fluke and we headed back there for dinner tonight. I have to be honest, I wasn't even sure who our server was until he brought our check. I should mention that customers place their food orders near the bar before sitting down. We waited and waited for some bread and water. I finally went inside to get some water. The bread appeared but before we could ask the waiter anything he ran off. We then waited for a really long time for our delicious food to arrive and then waited and waited and waited for our waiter to walk by so we could ask for our check. He was very friendly the 32 seconds he spent at our table. One of our kids was a server in several restaurants so I understand how difficult the job is. There is however, no excuse for being rude to or simply ignoring your guests. Even if the restaurant is super busy (which it wasn't) just stop by the table and apologize for the delay. My guess is that perhaps the patio staff is seasonal or new or something because when we eat inside the service is always great! The food is terrific. The drinks are tasty. We will come again but it's getting difficult to justify spending $80 plus tip when the service is so poor.

Yes, in summer, the 18th century building has flies. Nonetheless, I've dined here more times than I can count, and I've had some truly excellent five star meals. The ribeye sticks out in my mind as an example of sublime perfection. But here's the thing about Hunters Head: of late, the consistency is hit and miss. For example, the last time I dined, I had the burger, and my darling had the shepherds pie. My burger had zero flair--dry, bland and served on a roll more like cardboard than bread (mind you that the appetizer bread is absolute perfection, so I felt almost doubly cheated). But the shepherds pie was an insult--it should have been called celery pie given the utter absence of meat. The appetizer salads and deserts were also unremarkable---un-fresh, and a pale approximation of what we have enjoyed in the past. It's frustrating because when Hunters Head is good, it's exceptionally good (and well worth the price premium). But when it's not good (and in my experience, that's been more than just the occasional bad day) the lapsed standards are all the more a disappointment.

Went here with a large group for a rehearsal dinner. Since it was a large group, the menu options are narrowed down slightly but still offered several options. The bread was SO SOFT. I don't think I've ever had bread that soft. I ordered the bangers and mash with gravy and veggies. I've never had "official" bangers and mash before so I can't speak for its traditional accuracy but the mash and gravy was tasty. I was also happy with the bangers/sausage. I was worried they would just be boiled but they were tasty with a nice little grill char. The veggies were a sautéed bell peppers and Brussel sprouts. The sprouts were good. I don't typically like cooked bell peppers so I'm not a good judge of those. I also tried the fried calamari. I'm usually hesitant of fried calamari in general since often they seem like deep fried rubber bands but these were tender and I ate quite a few since the breeding was tasty. I enjoyed the artichoke dip. It had a melted cheese on top that was a little difficult to not end up with as a one big piece of melted cheese, but the dip did have some substantial artichoke pieces. I tried a friend's salmon. It was okay, though I'm not usually particularly impressed by salmon. I didn't hear any complaints from anyone in my group. Considering our size and how busy the tavern was, I think the staff did quite well. They appeared to have a system setup for groups. A minor complain is that I wish the water glasses were bigger. Though that may have been because I was with a group. I'd like to return and try the boiled peanuts and other offerings.

A perfect post-horse show grub. The atmosphere is amazing. Fast service considering how busy they were, and quality wasn't sacrificed at all. Definitely recommend the baked chicken. The organic coffee - also delicious.

It was wonderful to happen onto this place. The stew, the butternut squash ravioli, the salad, and the bread. Wow. The best thing about the whole experience was how the service rose up to meet the fine level of the food.

Moderate priced food was a fair value for the 200 year old location of this home, converted to a pub. Service was average. Great outdoor seating in a rural setting. It can be crowded on weekends and you must stand in line at the bar to order your meal.

A cozy British-style pub/restaurant. Everything on the menu is organically grown/raised so expect to pay a little more than usual. They also change the menu every month so don't expect to get the same food twice if you become a regular. Food is pretty basic: steak, chicken, fish, duck. Theres no "flare" in their food preparation though. Some drawbacks are their limited seating inside & the fact that you have to get up and go place your own order when you're ready to eat. Not the most comfortable seats to be sitting in either. You would think that with their prices, they could afford some cushions or even some uniformity at their table. My dinner last night they had us sitting at a picnic table with chairs of all shapes & sizes to sit in. If you're tall (above 5'10") than watch your head bc the doorways are tiny. It wouldn't be so bad if they piped some music in the dining area to drown out the noise. My only visits here have been for family dinners, I would never elect to come on my own or even bring a date here.

For starters bring your fly swatter as they have a lot of them here. They were running out of desserts at 3:00 pm. I wanted a lime wedge not cut down the middle but was told they had already butchered all their limes and had no limes left which was very irritating. My wife ordered the fish and chips which was great. I ordered the Weinerschnitzel which was good but since I don't like capers I had them omit the caper sauce. Service was spotty and some of the waitresses were a little on the hateful side. But the food was good though the service sure was lacking. They had you order at a window and that was a bottleneck as the line at the window blocked the door into the dining room and the guy ahead of me had a zillion questions about the menu so I thought I would end up standing there forever. I don't know why they don't take the orders at the table. The food really came out fast. The place was busy. I'll return, hopefully when they have some desserts.

Nice atmosphere...but the food, at least today, was just okay. Had a pork chop..it was small, overcooked and the only flavor I could taste was from the cole slaw drippings sitting next to the chop. I also has had a side of onion rings which were also marred by the too moist slaw sitting next to them. I've had better here so I know they can do better....well maybe next time. One more thing the way you order is ridiculous... would much prefer standard table-side service.

3 for the food, 4 for atmosphere. This is a very nice place to stop off for weekend brunch or lunch. Very rustic and picturesque, the outdoor area is particularly appealing on a nice sunny day. Traditional pub food, plus salads and sandwiches, breakfast items at brunch time, heavier fare available for dinner, with nice bar offerings. Well worth stopping in. We've tried everything from fish and chips to chicken pot pie, to eggs benedict to big salads. All have been tasty and satisfying. I'd come here much more often, but $16 for a cheeseburger? You've got to be kidding me. This is not The Prime Rib or the Palm. It's a place way out in the country where land and labor are a fraction of the price in the District. Rather than monthly, the prices mean I now just show up once or twice a year. But I do highly recommend it at least once on a nice day.

British Pub food, for the win! Yes Ladies and Gentleman classic British pub food is now hip, and while that term may drive people away once they hear that the horde of DC iphone flicking zombies has found something cool, fear not. The atmosphere is cozy with a dark wood feel that if nestled in the British country side it would be right at home. The menu changes on a monthly basis, the beer selection is well suited to the seasons and compliments the menu nicely. Go in, order a beer and relax, you'll thank me later!

Very charming old building, that is a maze of rooms inside. We ended up in the blue room, which was pretty cool. I had the chicken fried steak (good taste, but a little chewy) and my wife the fish & chips, which she really liked. Also had the lobster fried ravioli for an appetizer, which was good. This place seems very busy, so go early or make a reservation.

Wonderful establishment. It doesn't try to break the mold but it does the traditional stuff very well with great ingredients, a nice local wine list, and great atmosphere. Worth a pint or a meal after hiking in sky meadows - a nice gem in the area.

Dropped in on a beautiful evening for quick dinner on the outdoor patio. Based on previous reviews we ordered from Pub Menu: Shepard's pie and skinny meatloaf. Vegetables were fresh with wonderful texture. Potatoes were golden and fluffy. Desserts looked wonderful yet were warmed up via microwave. Ingredients were fresh and tasty. We will be back!

Stopped by here with my family after an outing in the country. The pub has a very nice atmosphere and quaint pub feel. The menu is on a board and you order at the bar and take your own drinks to your table. Ok, but kind of a pain with kids. It was a nice day so we chose to sit on the patio, which is really lovely. However, it was TEAMING with flies. They were everywhere and it seemed there was no effort made. To control them. We had bangers and mash, fish and chips, and the great mac and cheese. The food was good pub grub, albeit a bit pricey. Service was friendly and good. But the whole experience was ruined by the gross flies. Not sure if we will go back.

We've passed through this area in Upperville/Middleburg many times but I dont think we ever paid attention to this little tavern. First time here, so i can't atest to the rest of the menu, but we had the fish and chips and a veal sandwich with ice teas. Yes, it is pub food, or at least the items are what you would find on a pub menu, but the food is nothing like you would find in England. For starters, I dont think the worst fish and chips in England was this greasy. I mean, between the fries and the fish, my hands were covered in grease. The veal sandwich was safe since it was cooked and obviously cooked dead. It had really no flavor and part of me was wishing that they had paired it with a coleslaw or something acidic besides just a pickle. That too came with more greasy fries. Then why did they get 3 stars you ask? Well gosh dang it, they had some awesome bread! I'm a bread whore... well... ok... a GOOD bread whore and this place had it. The bread had a lovely crispy/crunchy crust, but not to the point of being hard - and then the inside was just light and fluffy goodness. I could of probably done with a cheese plate and that bread and made a meal of it. They had something resembling a farmer's plate, but I wasn't ready to take a risk on the other items we had. Sure, the hostess wasn't the "friendliest" I've ever come across - and we ate inside since there was a torrent of pollen floaties in the air, but I thought service was attentive and decent. There was really nothing there that I would have complained about. For dessert we had their chocolate cake and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Was it the best chocolate cake? No....but it was still good enough to eat most of it. We may try it again sometime, just to see if their sheppard's pie is up to snuff. But we're going to England in June, so I may as well wait and have the real thing then. Still, not terribly bad in comparison to the pub food in England, though for what its worth- and even with their bad reputation that they get about their cuisine, I've eaten pretty well in England!

Given the NYC prices for this food, I would have expected more. The staff was friendly but with the potential of a $20 burger (14.95, $2 cheese, $1 each topping...), I went with the fish and chips. They were decent but again for the price, I can't rationalize coming back. The beer selection was nice but cannot get over the prices.

Most original, little jewel in northern Virginia. Oh, just thinking of their bread makes my mouth water. Everything is fresh, local, organic and delicious. It has the original pub style interior. The draft beers are great, the breakfast and brunch food is to die for in this area. Not sure why everyone is saying that the service is not great! I've been here twice and both times the people are more than helpful and friendly. NOTICE! NOT FOR SNOBY RICH BASTARDS! Sorry if your Bentley or Lexus has to drive 4 feet on gravel and you have to eat local food or get personal with the staff. The Four Seasons has left the town.

Good food, polite waitstaff, cute restaurant. Minus points for the rude hostess and the complete lack of instruction how they operate. (Tip: Your job is to find your table, then send someone from your party to the bar to order and get a numbered spoon to identify your table. They don't explain this. At all.) Turkey burger was a little dry, but the flavors were good, and the sweet potato fries were heaven. Love that their food is local.

What a fun place. It is an English style pub with tons of outdoor seating and limited indoor seating. for cooler weather make a reservation for inside. Its not to far out of the city and worth the drive to upperville. The food is legite English style ( meat and potato ) varities and is very good. They could feature more English beer but overall the experince is alot of fun.

My hiking buddy and I visited the Tavern again after another Sky Meadows trip. This time, we made sure to get to the restaurant while the lunch menu was still available. The fresh (still hot from the oven) bread that came to our table before our meal was so very good - with a soft interior, a crackly crust, and lots of soft butter to eat it with. I had the three cheese quiche, which comes with a side salad. Quiches are a favorite of mine and I've had many, but this was the best one I have ever tasted. I wish I could get my hands on this recipe. The crust was ever so buttery and flaky - and that filling! So creamy..... My friend had a whole wheat pizza, topped with beets, figs, goat cheese, and balsamic vinaigrette. The flavors worked perfectly together. It was a perfect balance of earthy, tangy, and sweet n' savory. We split the strawberry shortcake for dessert. It was a lemony buttermilk scone, split in half and filled to the brim with fresh strawberries and vanilla scented whipped cream. It was incredible! The portions are generous enough to satisfy two hungry hikers and leave them still full at dinner time! The prices are not cheap , but certainly fair for the quality and quantity of the food. This was one of the best meals I've had in a while and I can't wait to go back!

The ordering procedure seems a bit odd, especially so I imagine for people not aware of the process. I had heard good things about the food here from a friend, but I wasn't so confident after reading some of the reviews online. The chowder was rather bland, if it had crab in it, I couldn't taste it. The calamari was good, as was the salad (two things pretty hard to mess up). The wild mushroom pizza had so much mild gooey cheese on it that it lost most of the flavor and became too heavy and wet. They should have skipped the cheese altogether and just drizzled olive oil over the dough and veggies and dusted it with some sharp cheese after it came out of the oven. The pork loin was dry and the mashed potatoes were not memorable. The sweet potato french fries and the bread were very good. They ought to bring water to the tables. Getting up in the middle of a meal and waiting at the bar to get a glass of water or two is a serious impediment to the dinning experience. The service was pleasant enough (although they don't take your order or service beverages), I just think its a perfectly acceptable expectation to be offered water with one's meal. The atmosphere was charming. I wouldn't come here for dinner again, but I would try the pub menu for lunch sometime if I was in the area. I suspect its a nice place to have a beer and a snack; but not a meal.

Went to Hunter's Head for the first time last week. The atmosphere is absolutely cozy. Our service was really good, but the server definitely is not breathing down your neck. The entrees came out about two minutes after the appetizer did, which was mildly irritating just because we quickly ran out of reasonable room on the table. The food was delicious. I got the ribeye, which was seasoned to perfection but somewhat undercooked. Not the end o fthe world, but not five-stars. My wife's food was fantastic, and the appetizer (artichoke dip) was also delicious. I enjoyed the pub style. It wouldn't hurt to up the english beer presence a bit (if you're going to market yourself as a British-style pub). All in all, a solid choice with a laidback atmosphere.

Cozy and interesting place. The ordering process is has a slight learning curve, but once you've got it down, it's just fine. Service is slightly spotty, but the employees seemed happy to be flagged down. Plenty of smiles to go around. Great tavern atmosphere, very good English pub-style food. The bread served with your meal is crusty and tasty. The chicken pot pie is traditional and delicious. Decent wine selection. A wider beer selection would be nice.

First time diners and loved it. They have very nice selection of beers and wines. I love the Peche Lambic and my husband the Sierra Nevada Celebration, both on tap!!! You order when you come in at the window by the bar. Your drinks are available immediately and you take them to your table and wait for the waitress to serve you. The food is delicious and the bread is even better! We even had dessert, a sour cherry pie. So yummy! We made reservations, and they were ready for us right when we came in. In fact, we made the reservations just about an hour before getting there. They have a great system.

Authentic pub atmosphere with fresh and healthy food. We stumbled on Hunter's Head by accident while passing through Upperville at lunchtime. And we're very glad we did. The establishment immediately reminded me of the pubs I'd been to while visiting friends in Sussex, all dark wood, pine-plank flooring, and a cheery fireplace in every room. The menu is posted on chalkboard near the door and contains the old favorites like shepherd's pie, but also a plethora of fresh-food and healthy innovations. I had the quiche which was done just right, and baked on whole-wheat crust. My companion had the eggs benedict and she was very pleased with the outcome. We had a Harp's ale, and a bloody mary, both a good accompaniment to the food. The service was efficient and friendly. I prefer full table service to ordering at the bar, pub-style, but that's just my preference. The prices are reasonable, and we'll be back to Hunter's Head.

Let's say you love the UK. You also love all things horses - horse shows, horse races, and even polo matches. Let's say you're living in Washington DC at the time and want to take a jaunt out to the country. And maybe while you're there, you want to feel like you're in the UK. Whilst experiencing your passion for all things horse. Ah, yes, then you've come to the right place! Also, the food is quite good.

The first time we visited the hunters head tavern was an absolutely incredible night with family. The food was great, the atmosphere as better, and the wait staff was helpful. Last night, not so much. Apparently we were invisible to the wait staff, and honestly I would have rather have had a burger from Wendy's. I'm not sure what caused the difference, but it went from one of the best dining experiences to the worst. In addition to the problems with the establishment, we were lucky enough to overhear a few snobby horseback riders complain that they wouldn't want to compete in the equestrian events in the olympics because there is no prize money and the medals aren't big enough.

Very mediocre food at a high price! The food was bland! $14 for a baked potato and a small salad? Ridiculous!! When ordering a dessert drink ( a house specialty-supposedly), the bartender had to read the description from a display on the table. The toffee pudding was mushy and disappointing! Over $100 for lunch ( with drinks) for two; and you have to go to the bar yourself to place the order!!!

My husband and I had invited a co-worker in town for a project to join us for wine run in the Delaplane area. We were looking for a place to eat before hitting the wineries and found Hunter's Head Tavern on Yelp. What a fantastic choice. Pub food as it should be! My chicken pot pie was excellent--light, tasty crust filled with yummy chicken goodness. My husband ordered the bangers & mash which was flavorful and generously portioned. Best of all, our guest was able to order a gluten free burger with sweet potato fries. She was absolutely tickled to find options beyond salads, but said it was rare to be able to enjoy a burger. The atmosphere is a definite bonus. It feels exactly like an English country pub, from the hand chalked menu, to ordering at the window, to the comfy-casual coolness of the dining areas. AND they have a great beer/wine selection. There are several references to high prices in the reviews, but we found them to be reasonable for the venue and what we received. And since their menu is posted online, we knew what to expect going in. No, the burger wasn't $5 but we weren't expecting Wendy's prices for a full meal in pub in wine country. It is what is is.

I love this place! My husband and I drive all the way from Sterling (which is about a 40 minute drive depending on traffic) for special occasions: birthdays, etc. The food is always great. We've taken our family and friends there and everyone always has nothing but good things to say. The service is great, and I love that they have good cider there (having been to Ireland, Scotland and England I've acquired taste for "the good stuff"). We almost always walk in without a reservation and have never had an issue getting a table. There's a great pub atmosphere, and they have the BEST shepherd's pie. I also like that they advertise that they use locally grown produce.

We come here every so often in the warmer months for a nice pint and some light fare out on the patio under the stars. The ambiance is spectacular, and there's nothing that beats the long drive into the country with this splendid little place shining like a beacon in the night. The prices are pretty high and the food is... well... close enough to British pub food to be served in a place calling itself a British pub. The beer selection consists of three or four selections on tap (I forget) and is best ignored in favor of the wine selection (you ARE in Virginia wine country, after all) but then again-- there's only three Virginia wines on their list. Cmon, Naked Mountain, Chrysalis and Swedenburg are just down the road and they're not on your wine list? Tsk tsk tsk....

This place has a nice outdoor eating area though it gets very crowded. I had a three star experience dining outside. Service was good the food was good. However, on a recent visit we sat inside. Service was bad. Long wait for what tasted like microwaved food. The chairs were very uncomfortable and the dining areas inside are cramped. They have a strange ordering system at this place where you order at the bar and then find a seat and then waitstaff bring your food and waiting on you and bring the bill. They should just have wait staff take orders from tables. It would make dining here a better experience. Oh and inside there were flies buzzing around and the silverware was dirty. I can only recommend coming here if you can sit outside on a nice sunny day and order a simple thing like a hamburger! Lot of folks bring there dogs to sit outside with them. They provide dogs water dishes. Nice touch! Parking lot gets very crowded and people park it spots that they shouldn't making it difficult to navigate in an out of the parking lot.

Loved this place the first time I went with my wife in 2009. Went last week with my brother and got some of the worst service I've experienced in a long time. They took about forty minutes to cook up two burgers and get them to us, and the fries were cold. At the end of the meal, the server brought us the tab (took her 10 minutes to notice we were done and waiting). The tab showed the proper amount. I give her my debit card... she comes back ten minutes later with the receipt for me to sign... Magically, the tab doubled to over 60 bucks.. which had been charged to me already. I then had to flag her down again to get her to fix the problem... she didn't even remember what we ordered, and I had to write the corrections into the receipt myself with the pen she handed me. 20 minutes later she comes back promising to post an appropriate refund back at the end of the day. No apology, no accountability, no offer of a discount.. just.. here ya go, see ya.

Recently stopped with some out of town guests on our way back from D.C. we were seated outside under the stars. The food is "pub food" but my goodness it is good. I love this place! Wish they were closer to us and we would be there every night!

First time there and the place was cozy and warm. The food was so very good and the service was wonderful! And yes, the bar was spot on! The brunch was outstanding!
