I was looking for a good place for lunch while I had to come to the laundrymat to wash dog beds... I saw this place and their sign said "soul food" I was like, heck yeah! Good ol' busting out the gut flavorful comfort food! First off the guy working the counter had no smile and acted like it was his first day working here, I asked him if it was but he said he's been there awhile. I said it was my first time here, he didn't offer any helpful information about the food there, didn't tell me about the combination platters they had, I found out AFTER I ordered, $15 that could have been $9. I finally get my food, the gizzards are cold, the mac n cheese are bland, they taste like pasta with a hint of cheese flavor, not exaggerating. The coleslaw... I don't know what they did to that, but it tastes Grose and I tossed it in the trash. The pulled pork however is edible, but not really good, too much vinegar taste with a hot spice. This is NOT what I was looking forward to, coming from living in the south, I'd say this is a disgrace to "soul food" and southern cooking. I would not recommend this place nor ever return, even if the meal was free. I should have just gone to taco bell

Visited Pate's this evening and was really disappointed in 3 dinner meals that were purchased. Odered chicken gizzards and they were fried to hard. Fried chicken wings was hard also and taste like the burnt grease they were cooked in. They food is usually good. Very disappointed!!

I just moved to Stafford from Alexandria,Va and heard about Pate's Cafe. I stopped there after surgery because I was starving. I hadn't eaten since 10 pm the night before and it was 5 pm post surgery. First, they were out of chicken wings. Second, the mashed potatoes were INSTANT mashed potatoes!!! What soul food restaurant sells instant mashed potatoes? Then the potatoes in the potato salad were undercooked and crunchy. Absolutely terrible! The Mac n cheese was dry and definitely missing the cheese. This is not your grandmothers soul food. When I want real soul food, I will drive through 95N traffic to go to Henry's Soul Cafe to get some real soul food! #instantpotoescirca1960

Made to order and from scratch fried chicken, fish pulled pork platters or sandwiches - great taste. Ample parking and clean, well stocked restrooms.

Fried green tomatoes were outstanding, even if it they were out of season. The owner was able to get some in and they were a nice surprise. The gizzards were not cut into bite sized pieces and this made them chewy. If they were cut into smaller pieces this would have been a nice snack. The employees were friendly. Nice place.

One of my favorites in Stafford. Pate's has some great soul food. Service can be slow at times but I usually call it in and it's ready when I arrive. Love the fried fish and home made mac n cheese. Haven't had anything I didn't like so far. Also offers a military discount.

I don't understand these other negative reviews. Not only were the gentlemen running the joint friendly and funny, the food was delicious! Honestly they have the best hush puppies, (seasoned perfectly) that I've ever had. The daily special was locally grown fried green tomatoes, and they were flawless. Beautiful, complex texture, perfectly seasoned breaded crust, and good to the last, finger-lickin bite. We also tried the Mac and cheese (great) and the southern greens which had a meaty texture and come doused with plenty of vinegar. The star of the show was the pulled pork sandwich that came with what I thought to be a sad, tiny amount of BBQ sauce...until I took a bite! The meat is insanely flavorful and the amount of meat they pile on the buttered bun is generous to say the least. Pro tip: dump that (delicious, not too sweet) cole slaw right on the sandwich and you got yourself a feast. These folks make your meal like they were making it for themselves. We can't wait to come back.

It seems obvious that the people that wrote these reviews were hungry. First of all, I stumbled uopn this place when I left the nail salon across the street from Pate's. I was curious and a little hungry so I went inside, ordered fried chicken wings, collard greens and corn bread. Got home tasted the collard greens first and it tasted like someone got a little too happy with the vinegar because it was too tangy and tasted awful! The chicken wings was not seasoned and was so soft and they still had blood inside (that's a health risk)!!. Figured I give them a another chance and thought maybe they were having a busy day that day..... So again, I went to Pate's Soul Food Cafe today for lunch and picked up my food which I ordered, mac n cheese, yams, fried okras and I'm sitting here at my desk at work and now eating. The chicken was well done this time, the mac n cheese tasted awful, the yams tasted and looked just like they just open the can, threw them in a pot and heated them up on the stove! The food tasted just like a 10 year old kid cooked it. It was bland, chicken bloody, and I have one word...DISAPPOINTED!!! Solution: I will NOT go back there or even think about Pate's Soul Food Cafe EVER again!!!! Period.

Once I transferred to the new location for my job, everyone was ranting and raving about Pate's so of course I had to try. I went simple for the first time and just got a chili dog and mac and cheese for the side. The chili dogs are AWESOME but i'm not a fan of the mac&cheese; it doesn't have that much seasoning to it. I also tasted one of my co-workers sweet potato fries and they were....ok. Maybe if they had some type of sweet sugar dipping sauce or something ...idk. They do get alot of business and when I go in there, other people's plates look delicious with their fried fish and wings, but I'm just a little afraid to try new things. I usually go to Pate's because I can walk right next door to it because other places I have to drive.

I had the fried catfish and fried okra really good. I also tried their cornbread, it was delicious.

I have only been to Pate's Cafe once but that will change very soon. Wonderful home cooked food. My wife just happened to see it one day while in the shopping center and am I glad she did. Very nice clean atmosphere and the food is everything you would want. All freshly prepared and cooked just like at home. I had the catfish which was some of the best I had eaten anywhere. If you want a real treat then give Pate's a try. You will be glad you did! BDM

Not often you find a soul food place with place settings and free samplings of their turkey and stuffing. I played it safe that day and got a chicken sandwich. That free turkey offering made me regret it cause it was good. like holiday at your grandma's good. but the sandwich was moist, tasty, and balanced with a side of sweet potato fries. The slice of sweet potato pie I took to go for breakfast the next day let the tuber speak for itself without artificial sweeteners interupting what mother nature does best, i will be back. Others need to go meanwhile to ensure it's still open when I do. This place is solid.

I tried Pate's looking for something a little different. I had the fried chicken wings. They were fried to perfection and seasoned to perfection. It is on my list for a return visit. Tony R.
