This restaurant has been a staple on Route 11 since before Interstate 81. Once a popular place with travelers it is now more popular with the locals. Food is for the most part good and servings large and filling. Features a daily lunch special which is a good deal. Hales is your typical hometown diner.

I want to start by saying our waitress was wonderful. Prompt and nice as could be. I hope they pay her really, really well, because she was pretty much the only thing this sad spot had going for it. I'm sure the place has a lot of very loyal regulars; there's really no other explanation for how it stays in business. Their menu is basic -- and I mean very basic -- American diner food. The corn bread was the only thing that came to our table that seemed to be homemade and even that wasn't especially good. Nothing was seasoned well. The brown beans were utterly devoid of flavor. I don't recommend Hale's unless your starving and have no other options. PS - You have other options.

I am sorry for the locals who love this place, but I just can't, won't, and don't. First of all, the food is far too expensive for the poor quality. I had the roast beef and honestly, it was inedible. My husband had a burger, which was small and mediocre. I know this place has a near cult following, but I think it's more loyalty and lack of options in the area. It can't be about the food. The biscuits, though. .. they were great.

Ate breakfast April 26, 2013. My eggs were cold, the "hash browns" were from a box of tater-tots, fried apples were of the frozen variety, link sausages were way over-cooked and tough/chewy. The gravy biscuits were absolutely horrible, thin brown gravy that had zero flavor and no meat - we both tried only one bite, that was enough - yuk. The coffee was the best of all by far, maybe a 6 on a 10 scale. Overall the food experience was way below mediocre - and the price was $18 (with tax), which was way too high for this uninspired, very poor quality breakfast. This restaurant need a serious makeover.

This is a nice little diner, with a quiet, country atmoshpere, and homemade food. A good bit of the menu is fried. It's worth an occasional visit.
