I was trying to try one more burger place for Burger Week to qualify for the contest before flying home to California, so I ended up making a late night burger run. I ended up at Sidewalk Cafe, which is open (and serves its full menu) until 1:30AM. I wanted to try Sidewalk Cafe's featured Burger Week burger anyway, since it sounded very unique (beef burger topped with Smithfield ham, fried oysters, and cucumber-peanut relish). The burger was very tasty and flavorful! It was a little dry overall, but delicious, and I appreciated the toasted bun. The burger was also served with fries. I ordered a cup of the soup of the day (white bean with bacon) too. Portions here seem pretty generous, and the menu is extensive. The restaurant was a bit dark and noisy when I went, but it was 10:30PM, and a lot of customers were drinking at the bar. I can see how it might be a little work to find street parking during busy times of the day, since the restaurant is right on Main St. It's not really that big of restaurant either. My waitress was very friendly, and checked on me several times throughout the meal. She apologized for the scraps on the table at the booth I had chosen to sit in when she brought the menu, and immediately wiped down the table thoroughly. She explained the specials of the day (which were written on a lined piece of paper), including the Burger Week deal. Little did she know that I came here precisely for Burger Week! ;D Overall, the food is good, and the value is even better. The Sidewalk Cafe is also a great place to come if you ever need to grab a bite to eat late at night.

I was looking forward to eating here due to the reviews but what I received wasn't what I expected. I waited a long time (45mins) to receive my food and I had to ask for my waters. It wasn't very busy and several groups came after I and they were attended to promptly and received their orders within 20 mins. I wasn't too thrilled about this and I probably won't be back here. My French dip was good though!

We love this place. We go every Tuesday night for taco night and couldn't be happier. Between two of us we order chips, salsa, Guac, sour cream (it does come with some but we need more), jalapeños and 5 tacos (usually we get some combo of chicken and shrimp) and our total bill is always $20 or less. The wait is usually around 15 min or less. The servers are great as well. It's a small place but just the perfect little date night spot for those on a budget like us :)

The atmosphere is very cool - great music and really nice staff. The food took over 30 minutes to arrive though which was kind of ridiculous. Also, there was a large group of "regulars" that was extremely loud and kind of ruined it for us especially when they relocated the group right next to our table. :( the food however was really good once it arrived. Just not sure I would come back often due to the long stay and exceptionally loud crowd.

10 stars. I can't say enough great things about this place. My boyfriend and I literally visited 3 or 4 times a week when we lived in the fan. Monday - $5 gigantic plate of nachos. Easily feeds 4 people. Tuesday - Taco Night. Taco night was always packed so just get used to having a drink and waiting a few if you have to, no big deal. Taco specials rotate week to week in addition to the staples (chicken, beef, etc.). My favorite are the asian pork tacos. Wednesday - $5 burger list. Monday to Thursday there are half priced apps and $2 beers starting at 3p for happy hour. Saturday and Sunday brunch are amazinggg. Pancakes and bacon, sidewalk benedict, western omelete, and a big pitcher of mimosa were our go to's. Food is always in HUGE portions and delicious. Quesadillas, gyros, spaghettis, everything. Seriously... just go. It's a local dive but you'll fall in love.

My fiancé and I found this place four years ago I think in error and from the first time we visited that place we enjoyed it. We went there last evening after not having been there in a very long time and it still hasn't lost that Cheers charm. You walk in and it's like everyone knows your name. We ordered Irish car bombs to start and wholly crap...these were awesome. First time having one and I'm glad it was here! Pitcher of Stella on tap is always a hit along with their awesome hot fries was just the best combo of bar food. Chicken quesadillas were good also. The portions are HUGE! So you get a lot for your money. The wait staff is cool. But one thing I failed to notice in the past was how great the music was. Yesterday was all about the oldies and I heard some great music so that's always a plus! Sidewalk keep doing your thing!

I was visiting some friends in Richmond this past weekend and after a night of bar hopping what better way to wake up and go to brunch with mimosas? (haha?) Upon arrival we had a party of 7. Our wait was about 15-20 min long. You can tell people started early on their "Sunday Funday" already with beers and shots. The place is small but packed with people and everyone there was super friendly. I can tell there were a lot of regulars and some were calling the lady their "mom". I believe this place is run by a mother and daughter. I THINKKKK. This place made me feel very welcomed. The service was friendly and pretty fast. I ordered a the big breakfast and it was hugeeee. Everyone had massive plates of food and I sampled a few of my friends dishes and everything was great! I love how they have Siracha (asian hot sauce). I like how they have pitcher of mimosas here too. Great spot for brunch and sunday funday. I'll come back next time I'm in town.

Why this is the most awesome place to have brunch in Richmond: 1) The food is incredible! Great portions and an amazing assortment of choices. I have eaten here so many times and have literally never experienced anything less than delicious. 2) The staff. Fast, attentive, sharp, helpful, and Edwina can really make a Sunday entertaining. 3) The atmosphere. Loud, crazy, chaotic, packed... if you want something low key and classy, well, go somewhere else. All the party animals high-tail it to the Sidewalk. 4) The drinks. $10 pitchers of mimosas! There's a reason why every Sunday there's at least a 30 minute wait starting around 10AM... do yourself a favor and go by, wait at the bar with a pitcher, and have a great time.

I loved the environment. Its very loud and vibrant for a brunch place but the music was great and the mimosa pitchers had us drunk. The cajun mess was soo good and very big portions. The most expensive thing on the menu is $11. We will be making this a monthly trip.

After seeing some of the rave reviews here on Yelp, I decided to head to Brunch this past Saturday with some friends to check out what everything was all about down off Main Street. And let's be honest, who doesn't like the sound of PITCHERS of mimosas? Count me in, for real. Their brunch menu is more than reasonably priced when you take in to consideration the portion sizes that you get. For about 8 bucks you can get your entire plate brimming with breakfast foods. That's pretty hard to beat unless you go to the southside area with a few mom and pop joints. I went with the Eggs Benedict with Béarnaise sauce. (Note, in some other reviews it says it is Hollandaise, but unless you can sub it out, I think they are mistaken.) with potatoes and asparagus. The eggs were perfectly done over easy, and the english muffin was pretty standard. I can't help but to think the ham or canadian bacon they used is Sysco, because it definitely had that taste to it. The asparagus was delicious, and cooked perfectly. And the potatoes were crispy on the outside and tender where it counts. They had quite a bit of heat to them, too. I can see this potentially turning some people off, but I enjoyed it. My only gripe is the Bearnaise sauce that came on it. I'm unsure if this is made in house, or what. But they were really heavy on the white wine vinegar in it. So much that it totally threw the balance of the sauce, which otherwise would have tied it altogether nicely. Oh, and the mimosa pitchers were bangin'. For what you spend, it's definitely worth checking out. I'll be giving this place another shot in the near future to see if my taste buds were wonky that day, or if it was just an 'oops' when measuring in the vinegar.

Sidewalk is the most "Richmond" place in RVA. I take every visitor here for brunch and I've never been disappointed. The food is excellent, and the menu is large. I'm a huge fan of the eggs Edwina (named after the amazing, funny, and attentive eponymous staff member), but I also love the breakfast burrito and the Cajun Eggs and Hash, which I have to consider the "proper" order. All are excellent and all are huge volumes of delicious food. Additionally, Sidewalk does $10 pitchers of mimosa that each contain the perfect ratio: an entire bottle of champagne, and just enough OJ to turn it orange. A few friends, big plates of food, and a bunch of pitchers at Sidewalk is the best single way to start a Saturday or Sunday in the city.

Delicious food. Great service. Edwina is the best. The only place where you can go at 12pm pm on a sunday and people are dancing. Comfortable atmosphere. 5stars definitely.

Drinks were good. Bartender was kind and attentive. Prices weren't too bad either. I have this weird urge when I am there to clean. It just seems the place needs a gallon of bleach and some elbow grease.

Taco Tuesday is an awesome deal ($1.50-2 per taco)! The chicken taco was great but the mahi taco was just ok. Homemade guac is good to add to tacos but not great on chips

I've tried to come here for brunch but it is always super packed. I've made it for dinner twice and both times have had an awesome gyro. I will come here again for the gyro. It is just awesome. Happy hour means 2 dollar Devil's Backbone Vienna Lager. Had the kid, and they have kid size spaghetti (but it was overwhelmingly oregano-y). Service could not have been better both times we came- super friendly waitresses and barstaff.

Went here for brunch on a Saturday; this place was poppin' with hungry/hungover customers! We were a group of 4 and lucky to grab a booth within a few minutes but you'll need to wait a bit during peak hours. Ordered a mimosa pitcher for $10 which gave us 4 good-sized glasses so it's a pretty good deal. Got the Cajun hash and eggs which were good but I wish they had more spice (thank you, Hot Sauce). Food was super filling; ended up taking home some leftover potatoes and made my own hash browns at home! I wouldn't say it's the best brunch food in Richmond, but it's all about the local vibe. Service was a tad slow but it was very busy and since it is such a local spot, I think the staff is not as rushed and assume their customers are happy to chill out (this is when you order a second mimosa pitcher). Sidewalk Cafe is definitely a great divey spot serving heavy breakfast food at cheap prices and they play some kickin' tunes. Check it out next time you're looking for a heavy Richmond brunch.

My friend and I are enjoying our Friday night at this awesome dive-bar in the fan. It's walking distance to my house and I love it! You feel like your neighbors. The ambiance is exceptional and the bartender is very personable and easy on the eye. The music is vivacious and it is a great first date spot, big party dinner, or just if you want to grab a drink at the bar. They have fabulous beers on tap as well as tasty burgers, crispy wings, and fabulous pasta. Their brunch, amazing, great food and drink specials during the week, and a happy hour you have to come see! The servers genuinely seem like they love their job and are having a good time. It is a great vibe! Thanks Sidewalk for such great customer service!!

The food here is so delicious. The portions are massive. Yes, it's a divey little hole in the wall, but isn't that where all the good food is? Last night I got the Greek plate...delicious and oh so filling with out carb loading ;) my friend got the fried scallops and I tried one and OMG! They were MASSIVE and so delicious. Our service was great - loved the whole experience. Also (and I know this is random) but they have some damn good ranch! :) ill be going back soon...I want to try to saganaki :) mmmmmm cheese on fire! Yes please!

Excellent Sunday brunch! Eggs anyway you want and the crispiest skillet potatoes anywhere. I had the Sidewalk Benedict. DH had the Cajun breakfast. The service is as good as the food. On this particular Sunday, they were down with a 1970s funk music revue, making for a very energetic start for a lazy Sunday.

Four stars for the steak sandwich, it was just bumdiggity. The location has a really home-y feel and the atmosphere is definitely casual and friendly. A good place to grab a nice bite for lunch but just an all around good place to eat in general. First time here left a good impression, most likely will come back.

Sidewalk Cafe is little more than a dive bar with bad food. Been a few times, and there are a few guarantees: 1. There will be an obnoxiously loud, heavily-intoxicated, 50-something wandering around the bar. 2. The beer will be warm and taste of dirty taps 3. The food will not impress 4. Wait staff will be incredibly friendly (the reason for my second star) I can appreciate that there are some who enjoy this type of joint, and more power to you for keeping this place afloat, but with so many other, more impressive options in the vicinity, I'm not coming back.

I went here to catch up with a buddy over a few beers and this place was perfect. Good selection of brews on tap and in bottles and the atmosphere is classic Fan. The service was really great and all of the bartenders/servers were really friendly. Great wings too and good happy hour deals!

  • Michelle P.

This is definitely a dive bar but the food is a notch up from what you would expect in a typical dive. I have been here for Sunday brunch, happy hour, in the evening for dinner and drinks and after a night of drinking in the Slip and only had bad service once. That was on a busy Friday night and they were packed. The food is consistently good with really large portions so you might consider just sharing something. Sunday brunch is the best. Pitchers of mimosas, great breakfast and a good crowd are a great way to start your Sunday.

Sidewalk feels like a neighborhood place, even if you no longer live in the neighborhood. The bartenders/servers are always super friendly. The neighborhood dive vibe immediately hits you when you enter the door--as does the smell of one too many beers having spilled on the floor. If you can get past the frat house smell, you will have a great time. They have great beers on tap and the food is not what you would expect from a place like this. Huge portions...you can definitely order something and share. Last time we were there my husband had the Italian sub, which was great as usual. The portobello sandwich that I ordered was pretty standard and nothing that I couldn't have made at home. My son had the hummus platter and that was the real standout-- delicious hummus surrounded by pita bread, good feta, kalamata olives, cucumbers and tomatoes. Yum. Next time I will order that and feel "healthy" while I drink my beers.

I really wanted to like Sidewalk Cafe, especially after how much I've enjoyed its sister restaurant Kitchen 64. I was a little disappointed by my dining experience, but might try it again. I came here on a Sunday evening with my family to celebrate my dad's birthday. He was really intent on trying Sidewalk Cafe's spaghetti. We came early- I think even before 5, and it was already very crowded. We waited a while, and got our seats. For a laid-back, early Sunday dinner, I don't think this was the right place. I know that the reviews said it can get boisterous in here, but it was a little ridiculous. The people behind us were especially loud, sloppy drunks. They were screaming and spilling things all over the place, which made it difficult to enjoy a meal here. The service was very good, and the food was pretty good too. We all got pasta and my mom got the quesadilla. Portions were huge, and the bread and salad with house dressing were good. The chicken pesto pasta was good, but more of a cream sauce than traditional pesto. The spaghetti was okay- not the best, but still good. Everything was reasonably priced, and we all had tons of leftovers. I might try back here for drinks some time, but I would not recommend it for a sit-down dinner.

Visited with my mom on a Wednesday night when this place offers 8 different burgers for $5. It is a little divey, but it was hard to resist the cheap burger night and the good happy hour deals. I forgot the name of my burger, but I seem to remember it was something very outlandish, like being topped with oysters. We both enjoyed our burgers and fries; everything was seasoned and cooked well. I plan to return one Sunday to try some of the brunch fare and have a pitcher of mimosas!

I've been going to this place for years and love it. It's a good place to run into old RIC seen and some college folks. Food is great, cheep and piled high. You can order food up until midnight just about anything on the menu. Bartenders are layed back and easy to chat with when they arnt too busy. They keep good music of different variety played by the barkeep that gets louder as the night goes on. Old standby bar in ric

I'm really torn on this review of my dinner experience here. First -- let me say the food I had was DELICIOUS. I had the chicken quesadilla, and expected a typical 'bar' quesadilla, but it was huge. Lots of chicken, cheese, peppers, onions, tomatoes, plenty of salsa, and enough sour cream to last a lifetime. I was pleasantly pleased, and glad I just got the appetizer and not the whole meal (could have also had black beans and rice - not needed at all). My husband's meal was a little underwhelming. Great french fries that came along with a gyro. At first look, the gyro looked great with lots of fresh veggies and wrapped in a grilled pita, but once he started eating, it seemed like the meat had been prepackaged and just seemed a bit too oily. The vibe - definitely a dive bar. This isn't somewhere you want to take family when they visit you in town. I'm not sure how it would feel for breakfast or lunch, but it definitely has more of a 'late night munchies' feel than a nice dinner. Either way, we left full, satisfied, and smelling slightly of that 'stale bar' smell. I'm sure we'll go back... just maybe in the afternoon when not too many characters are around.

Coming from DC which is a major brunch city, I was excited to see what Richmond had to offer as far as the brunch scene. I had tried another highly recommended place on Yelp and was slightly disappointed (long wait, okay food, and higher bill than I was wanting to pay for brunch). The Sidewalk Cafe overall didn't disappoint. There was a common link to my previous brunch experience in Richmond in the it's small, packed, and chaotic in finding out how to put your name on the list for a table. On a Sunday afternoon with a good friend we stood at the crowded bar for about 10 minutes before we found out who was in charge of the wait list and it was a bartender who was busy so it took a while to get her attention. We were told there were 6 tables ahead of us, not given a wait time, and I never saw them physically writing a list. A few minutes later while waiting she asked if we wanted a drink and we got the pitcher of mimosa (only $10.50 and we both got about 3 glasses out of the pitcher). We chatted with friendly people at the bar and waited about 30 minutes, some tables emptied and it took them a while to seat people in them, but eventually we were seated. Took about 5-10 minutes for our server to greet us but luckily we already had drinks. We were hungry so we ordered right away, the food coming out looked and smelled amazing! Our food was well worth the wait, best brunch I've had in a long time! I had the Cajun hash with potatoes that were amazing, shrimp seasoned and blackened perfectly, and sausage topped with eggs....absolutely delicious!! I couldn't finish so half was taken home! I gave the place 4 stars, the service could have been expedited better but in the end the food and prices you just couldn't beat and made it worth it if you aren't in a rush, only $30 for 2 full amazing plate of food and about 6 mimosas. I paid that much alone at another popular brunch place and the food wasn't nearly a good or presentable and the drinks were almost 3times the price.

A great little piece of what makes Richmond great. My boyfriend and I tried them out for the first time today for brunch and were not disappointed. It's a loud and boisterous atmosphere with GREAT music and lots of colorful young locals like ourselves. We got a pitcher of mimosas, an amazing deal for $10.50 and what tasted like a whole bottle of champagne with a splash of OJ. My boyfriend ordered the blackened chicken sandwich with fries, I had a bite and was pleased. Unlike other chicken sandwiches, Sidewalk's was juicy and perfectly cooked. The seasoning was perfectly spicy and the lettuce and thinly sliced red onion complimented the heat perfectly. I ordered 2 eggs cooked medium on toast w spiced potatoes and bacon. It was all delicious and exactly as I ordered it, the taters had a nice spice to them and the portions of both our dishes were enormous. It is definitely not the kind of place i'd take my parents or really anyone over the age of 35-40, but the funky atmosphere, reasonably priced and yummy food, and ample portions were reason enough for me to want to stop by again for brunch.

Ok let's jump right in. The portions are huge. The prices are very decent. The waitress was VERY lively. And when the food arrived I forgot everything else. The food was awesome! I had the fish burrito and the black bean quesadilla and a side salad. My cousin had the chicken wings and the meatball sub. Wayyyy too much food for just the two of us. But certainly didn't mind eating the leftovers the next day. The interior environment does not match the outside.

  • Sam S.

Surprisingly delicious food. By that I mean it's not much to look at from the outside but once you're in you forget all about it. The service was very good and fast. Our server came by to check on us but didn't over do it which can be annoying. My friend and I have been on a quest to try every burger in Richmond and Sidewalk Cafe's is tops! I had the Bacon Cheeseburger and it was incredible. I also have to say they know how to cook fries too. WOW. We walked out stuffed and not broke, which is always nice. If you haven't eaten there don't wait GO.

What can I say? Best brunch and best late night food in RVA. Most definitely a local favorite. Only downfall? Sometimes there's a long wait for brunch. But it's worth the wait!

Good food, good beer, cool neighborhood vibe - what else can you ask for. I was visiting from out of town and my ex recommended this place to me - it was spot on. Don't expect high class - this is The Fan all the way - laid back with eclectic decorations in a tiny bar. I ordered the portebella mushroom sandwhich - it rocked. Found out a friend lives near here and an older friend used to go here while attending VCU. I think I will come hang out here again on my next trip to Richmond.

Whitney Houston sing-along and dance party with a side of eggs and mimosas? This is exactly what I found at Sidewalk's brunch this past Saturday. From the moment I walked in, I was totally captivated by the upbeat, energetic, and welcoming atmosphere. In honor of the late singer, Whitney's music was blasting throughout the restaurant and practically every single table was singing along to the songs. As we waited for a table (probably 20-30 minutes), my friends and I danced AND sang to the music- and we were not alone. I'm no stranger to busting a move in a variety of settings, so it was nice to witness other people doing the same thing! Once we sat down, the fun only continued. We danced in our seats, sang, and made friends with other patrons; behavior typically found at a bar not at a brunch spot. Of course, our reason for going was to nosh on some grub and the food did not disappoint. I ordered the huevos rancheros and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND them. Eggs with cheese, onions, black beans, peppers topped with just the right amount of salsa and sour cream. And they came with a side of potatoes that were seasoned to perfection. The portion was huge, but I did my best to do the dish proud. Of course we enjoyed pitchers of mimosas as well- what better way to compliment a mid-day meal than with champagne and oj? If you eat meat, I've heard the Eggs Edwina (named after their infamous server who gives the best engagement toast- and her birthday celebratory shots aren't bad either) is a delicious choice. This neighborhood joint is the place to be for a casual (emphasis on the casual- this place is by no means fancy), leisurely weekend meal. Be prepared to wait for a table during brunch hours, but I promise you the wait is totally worth it.

Staff is highly entertaining! Excellent food for a dive bar. Order the fried calamari tossed in buffalo sauce.... I have no idea who came up with this but I'd like to kiss them. Actually, Sidewalk is barely a dive bar... I'd say it's a high end dive... if that exists? Anyway it's a neighborhood favorite for good reason.

Excellent pub atmosphere with a large and fairly diverse menu. The interior is dark, and a little loud, so not a quiet dinner scene. The portions are too large, and the food can be bland, but it's pub fair. Better for drinking with friends who want to make a little noise.

After moving within walking distance of sidewalk it easily became our go to neighborhood bar.... the staff is fun and friendly, the food is amazing with large proportions and awesome prices. If you can overcome the initial shock of how small the place inside really is, you will quickly see the coziness of the place. I would definitely reccomend this place for great comfort food in a comfy cozy setting. Also great for late night food and drinks!

The atmosphere is one of a kind at sidewalk café. Combine that with the amazing food and huge portions and you have something special. Brunch is a must, especially the cajun hash & eggs. For dinner I highly recommend the chicken pesto pasta. It's served with salad and a loaf of bread so it's more than enough to split.

I've had both breakfast and dinner here and it's been spot on. My co-diners agree. You can't beat the brunch menu and the prices are reasonable. And the bar is stocked and ready to go @9:30am for the brunch crowd. $10.50 Mimosa pitchers....hello....yum, not the strongest I've had, but still good for the price. The portions are large and food is done correctly. Be patient during the rush. The staff is friendly and they care about their customers and have been there for a while. Love walking for breakfast or dinner here.

I'm not going to lie: I love a good dive bar and Sidewalk fits the bill. We love coming here on a Friday evening after a long week and taking advantage of their $2 domestics, an order of buffalo wings (yummmmm) and the greek spaghetti. All the pasta dishes are huge so unless you haven't eaten for the past 3 days, you'll probably want to split them. If you're looking for frills, don't come here. The specials are usually handwritten on a piece of notebook paper, if there are specials at all. However, if you're looking for good food and easy going people, definitely give Sidewalk a try.

Been for brunch and dinner. Very homey divey feel sometimes very too local as saw people wrestling and a personal anniversary toast. But I guess it adds to the charm of the place. Brunch was very good and dinner was good. Can get pretty crowded at times.

Really a 3.5 :) The cuban hash and eggs (can't remember the exact name but its shrimp, sausage, potatoes and egs) is delicious. Pitcher of mimosas is a great deal and the service - both bar and table was excellent. Was disappointed in the huevos rancheros; this was was an omelet instead of eggs with hash/beans/etc. i'll be back - only reason a 3 is that nothing was stunning.

I went to this restaurant based solely on some previous reviews. Was I surprised. The atmosphere was as though I had walked in on a hooker's convention! Swearing loudly, skimpily dressed, the women there paid no never mind that I was there with children. Many of the men coming in looked as though they had just gotten out of prison, all wearing wife-beaters. Should have left from the get, my bad. The wait staff was pleasant and the food was good, even though it took quite a while to get the food. Definitely not a place to take kids. My fault for sure. The kids seemed to enjoy the change of pace.

My fiance and I went to The Sidewalk Cafe for brunch with his parents. All four of us enjoyed our meals. The prices were right around $8 or $9 which I think is reasonable judging by the amount of food that they gave. You could probably consider eating one meal amongst two people unless you're very hungry. The atmosphere is basically a bar style with booths along side of the wall, but we went for breakfast, so I can't say anything for the night/dinner experience. When we went for brunch, the music was pleasant, 70's music. We've driven by before in warmer weather and have seen the outside patio crowded but I guess they store away the tables when it gets cold. Overall, seemed like a great place! We'd like to go back to try the mimosas for brunch and the dinner menu.

Went here for a late dinner the night before Christmas eve. I've been here for drinks many times but this was our first time ordering food. It was pretty slow inside and our waitress alternated between sitting down watching tv and taking care of her 2 other tables. She wasn't bad just not very friendly or attentive. My fiancé and I both ordered the blackened tuna sandwich. Almost all of their entrees are decently priced (about $10 a meal) anyway, we asked for our tuna medium rare- when the food got to us the tuna was cold and medium well at best. That was disappointing, the french fries and the bun the tuna was served on were pretty good but when the main attraction of the meal (the tuna steak) is wayyy overcooked it kind of makes everything else just as disappointing. I'll still visit this place, it has a nice little neighborhood bar vibe but my advice would be if you're going to serve things to temperature, make sure your kitchen staff can prepare them to specification.

Lunch Review: I've been a couple of times for business lunches during the weekdays and I got to admit, I was impressed. Some might call the atmosphere "Divey", but the lunch menu is expansive, the portions are ample, the service is great, and the prices are right. I know this place is a night spot as well, and I can't speak to that, yet....

I must admit i have never entered Sidewalk Cafe in the daylight hours. I promise this is on my to do list as i have heard good things. As a place to drink your night away this is a must stop...usually one of the last places I will hit as it is best known as "The Last Last Call In Richmond". The staff is always fun and the people are always entertaining. End your night out on a high note here people! You can be getting your last drink as you watch everyone else already walking home since their ending bar of choice already kicked them out.

Sidewalk is one of those great hole-in-the-wall bars where you know you can get a solid meal or drink any time of day. The decor is eclectic, the servers are friendly, it's always fairly busy and the portions are huge. The food is American with some Greek and Italian dishes, too. Brunch is my favorite time to go. Along with pitchers of mimosas (who doesn't love that?!) you'll find standards like French toast and pancakes, along with some original creations. Eggs Sarduci is an English muffin, spinach, tomatoes, fried eggs and Swiss cheese served with potatoes. Eggs Edwina is an English muffin topped with tomatoes, bacon, fried eggs and Fontina cheese served with potatoes. Both are delish. There's also Cajun hash, heuvos rancheros and an awesome Greek omelet that's served on a pita. Lunch and dinner fare include appetizers, sandwiches, pizza and entrees. I love the portobello mushroom salad with house vinaigrette. The pasta dishes are incredibly huge filled with flavor. You could easily split them. Fans of cream sauces must try the Carbonara with bacon and peas. It's very indulgent, but worth every calorie. Along with the food, the bar here is always filled with friendly regulars. It's a great place to hang out, grab a few drinks and make new friends. Sidewalk is also known for showing soccer games on a big TV.

Never really did a full brunch before so I chose this place solely based on yelp reviews, I loved it! When we arrived on Sunday about 1pm we were told we had like a 45 minute wait. At first I was like wow...but once the pitcher of Mimosas came I was ok!! Fun atmosphere, good food and decent prices....I'll definitely be back.

Great food but terrible crowd that doesn't seem to be under control at all by the restaurant. Last time we were there, some guys were yelling at each other right outside, then started fighting. No one from the restaurant came out. Can't say I'll go back again. I realize that this could happen anywhere but the fact that no one came out to even check on it makes me think that it happens frequently. There is no way they didn't see/hear the commotion. Didn't seem safe to begin with, but this incident confirmed my suspicion.

Puts the "fun" in Sunday Funday! If you are looking to be entertained while you enjoy a delicious Sunday brunch, then Sidewalk is for you. Very high energy, neighborhood feel. If you plan to go with a big group you should either arrive early or late- there is usually a wait given its popularity. A highlight of many of my Sunday mornings for sure. Great food and service.

Best black bean burger I've ever had, hands down. Took a bunch of friends from out of town once and they all loved it. Huge portions of delicious food, the only down side is it can get SUPER loud, especially sunday brunch time when it's full of early day wastey-faces--not that I'm judging, I am all about boozy brunch and it was fun and the noise is just part of the vibe, but we practically had to yell to hear each other and a drunk girl kept coming over to our table and wrapping her scarf around me. I thought all of this was hilarious but I mean, I could see others maybe not. It's not always that crazy though and usually it feels just like any other divey bar/restaurant.

One of the best brunches in town. My wife's addicted to the Huevos, and the Cuban Hash is also superb. It can get noisy, and you may have to wait, but the staff is terrific and provides great service. The only glitch last visit was an inconsiderate guy who held down a booth for four all by himself without ordering while four of us stood at the door for over a half-hour. Then his so-called friend must have stood him up. This angst-inducing sort of situation could easily be remedied by a policy of not seating anyone until the whole party has arrived (or by his having been a gentleman and offering us his booth).

I may have to give this place a second chance. I mean, the amount of praise this place received from friends was pretty staggering and then to come in and experience what I did was a little underwhelming. First of all, I have already learned to just never be in a rush when I go out to eat anymore. We gathered shortly after one and were in the restaurant just under an hour and a half, and since our food consisted primary of eggs and toast, I'm assuming that the restaurant has a typical household range in the kitchen with 4 eyes and an oven. Again, wasn't in any kind of rush, but just to give an accurate assessment of the time you'll be spending in there on a Sunday. Considering the place is the size of a nice studio/1 bedroom apartment, it does get crowded and the time drag mandates that you come with good company. Since brunch was still an option we checked out that menu. Immediately I was pulled towards the Cajun Hash & Eggs, although there were a couple of other menu items that were somewhat attractive as well, my live for Cajun spices and flavor really had me salivating. Mayhaps it was my fault, but I conjured images of New Orleans and a skillet coming out to me with expertly seasoned shrimp and andouille on top of some potatoey concoction, underneath a runny egg. The majority of the ingredients were there: eggs, sausage, shrimp, and potatoes. Oddly enough it lacked any sort of flare to even get confused with something out of the bayou. In DC, we would often reflect on how "whitewashed" food would become when it moved into certain pockets and lose much of its authentic qualities. This is not a Cajun restaurant, so perhaps I shouldn't get excited about mislabeled menu items. The Bloody Mary was decent, although, especially salty. I don't usually give 2 stars and say that I would go back, but here I would. I was given a bunch of flack from a friend because I wanted to go someplace else, but it wasn't authentically "Richmond" enough; it was too corporate and the food wasn't that good. Let's just say this, to those like me, who feel like it's very hard to distinguish yourself when you're serving breakfast foods. It's eggs, meat, and starch.. and it's the same regardless of where you go. I most likely won't suggest a future brunch here (too crowded and we just happened to get lucky and get a table), but there is food on the menu that I feel might be worth a future trip. I just hope that the taste my brain says should be there is there the next time.

I had a garden burrito and added chicken. This was my attempt to get something a little on the healthier/lighter side. Unfortunately it was covered in cheese and sour cream, oh ,and it was HUGE. I was a bit disappointed because it wasn't what I expected, but it was still pretty good. Veggies were sauteed and chicken was good. My companion had a greek platter that looked really good. If I go back, I'd have that.

When I lived a block away from Sidewalk, I never went. When I moved several miles away, that's when I started to go. It's (almost) always busy whether you go for breakfast, lunch or dinner, but I've always had a good time here. The food is slightly better than your average bar food, and portions are huge. And they always seem to be open when no one else is. Three and a half stars is too low, and four might be a bit too high.

Before moving to Richmond, I really didn't see myself ordering a pitcher of mimosa, followed by a round of Van Gogh shots - all before noon (and a food order). But I guess when Edwina is at the helm, I'm having fun that day! The best part: no question about what young men she likes that day... this is entertainment!

    (4)
  • Brandon D.

Sidewalk Cafe is my favorite brunch spot in the Fan. It's like they forget to turn the music down after everyone leaves on Saturday night, and the party just rolls on into Sunday afternoon. The mimosa pitchers keep the feeling right, and the food never disappoints. Ever. My favorite dish is the Cajun Eggs & Hash, but I've also done the big breakfast and can tell you it's all good. Oh yeah, Edwina is a hoot and always entertaining. And if there was an attire option less casual than "casual," I would have picked that.

Just ate here today for the first time. I had previously visited Sidewalk Cafe for drinks so I had a hard time viewing it as much more than a bar. When we went it was about 3:00pm so the whole place was pretty empty... I ordered black bean quesadillas, and my friend ordered a meatball sub and french fries. I have to say it was really good. Everything was just seasoned really well. The prices weren't too bad either. All the sandwiches and subs were roughly $8.75. $2.50 for a drink... Two people and our bill came out to $25.20. And as everyone has said, the portions are huge so you will almost definitely have left overs. The only complaint I would have is that the menu is just too... big? It's a bit overwhelming when you sit down. It's almost like they couldn't decide what kind of restaurant they wanted to be so they decided to try a little bit of everything: Greek, Italian, American, etc...

"Hello big bowl of pasta. You're going to feed me for at least 2 meals!" I got the bacon carbanera per another yelpers recommendation. Being a health conscious guy this was a splurge. The good part was the portion size, more than enough to satisfy the voracious appetite. The down side? It was a little bland. When you have that much pasta it becomes mundane after about of the plate is consumed. The scary part? The next day I took my leftovers out of the fridge and discovered everything had congealed.... Yes, that's right. I had the startling revelation that what I thought was a tasty sauce the night before was actually melted bacon fat.

I've tried to like this place, a lot of my friends do... but I've failed to be impressed. I get that it is likely a good bar, but the food is sub-par. Just tonight I got the tuna special, ordered it rare, and it came out fully cooked. The flavor was ok, but overcooked tuna is soo bad. I've gone for brunch and felt like I was sitting in a smoke pit. Food was forgettable and I just didn't get the appeal. They do, however, have pitchers of mimosas.

I have ordered almost everything on the menu and my only complaint is the chili. LITERALLY EVERYTHING else is to die for! Huge portions. Servers used to be bitchy, but over the past year they have been a pleasure to deal with. Best steak and cheese sub in town. The prices are very inexpensive. Love the Saganaki!

This is a dive but an awesome one! Great for the early afternoon hangover cure of brunch. Can get crowded on weekends. Atmosphere seems like a poor drunk college boy randomly threw all his crap on the walls. But nonetheless, love the beer and their hummus plate is awesome!

I lived right up the road from Sidewalk Cafe on Rowland and Hanover and when it comes to other places to eat in the Fan, a person can not go wrong with Sidewalk. Sure, during a Friday or Saturday night it can get a bit loud and busy, but its a bar, all good bars are packed on those nights. The food is tasty and the portions are huge. I would travel down to them any chance I got. If you are new to the Fan or have lived there for years, this is the place where you should be hanging out at.

    (5)
  • Sarah H.

The service is pretty good here, usually a little noisy and crowded (but not overly noisy unless you go on a weekend night). They have a pretty good brunch menu. The food portions are very big and pretty tasty from what I've tried. Prices aren't too bad either.

Can't comment on the food as I didn't eat there but I will say this is one of the most interesting and kind of cool bars in all of Richmond. I came in on a random Saturday afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed my visit. The crowd was all over the place, in my couple of hours there, I saw a gay black man, a tattooed covered white guy with a long beard, a group of people in tuxedos and formal wear all in the same bar, it was amazing. The staff was friendly, all the bartenders were friendly and accommodating and the ladies were definitely nice to look at. One weird issue, they have Tito's vodka paraphernalia on the bar but they don't actually serve Tito's, as a huge Tito's fan this was quite the disappointment. The drinks I did have were strong and on the cheap side. All in all, great place to kill time if you aren't in a rush and want to just chill out in a nice environment with some cheap booze and cool people.

Love this place. A landmark. A must try at least once. I would give this place 4.5 out of 5, though, just because it gets very crowded and loud. Drinks are always strong and the food is always good. Highlights: ANYTHING on their brunch menu. Some of the best bennies I've ever eaten ever. So. Good. Pizzas always a good choice, and while its not amazing its not bad at all. One of the best eggplant parmigiana in town. Try it. SAGANAKI. HOLY SHIT THIS SAGANAKI. This version of the dish would be my last meal on earth. They take greek cheese (like feta and mozzerella had a baby flavor wise) and bake it, then douse it in 151 and SET IT ON FIRE. Then, as the fire burns down, they hand you lemons and you put out the fire with the lemon juice. Then you get sliced bread and slather it with the gooey melted cheese with the crispy top. Literally I know your mouth is watering reading this, I promise you im not kidding when I say youll love it. This is a must go to place, but not the type of place to bring elderly.

Of all the times I've been to Sidewalk Cafe (probably 20ish) I can say that 90% of the time I've been pleased with everything from the service, to the food. The menu is so expansive that it is a great place to go with a group of people with different palettes. I, by far, have enjoyed the pastas. The portions are quite large (I always have left overs) and flavorful. I only wish the space was a little larger to accommodate the high demands, especially for brunch. One Sunday, we waited as long as 30-40 minutes for a table, however, the mimosa pitchers will make it all better! Sidewalk will forever be my "go-to" place when we are in the area and can not decide on a meal!

I will always love Sidewalk. This is the place that my husband and I had our first date over 10 years ago and now we are able to take our kids to brunch. A restaurant that lasts that long and is good for so many occasions will always be exceptional in my book. On this visit we took our kids to brunch with another family. Our wait was short even though the restaurant was full when we got there and they don't have a ton of seating for 8 people but once we were seated our food came fast and the fun volume of the music was perfect to distract a whiny 4 year old(my daughter) as well as not allow other people to hear her. The pitchers of mimosas also helped me to not be as stressed about her being a little fussy this morning. The food isn't exceptional but still really good. They have a lot of options and it's a win when they offer pitchers of mimosas. I've been there twice for brunch recently and we've had a rotation of the same waitresses that we love and just make brunch a party! I already can't wait to go back!

First thing, yum! Came here with some friends on a Saturday morning for brunch. Vibe is very much like a small town bar but don't get me wrong it absolutely makes the experience. I got the huevos rancheros, soo good and a huge portion for the price. The service was fantastic and I would come here again!

I've been here several times ,and the service is always great. The restaurant is always packed with sports fans and local regulars. The food is awesome and so are the drinks. Word of advice don't bother if you're looking for a quite restaurant, this isn't it!

I would have given Sidewalk Cafe 2 stars because I have had much tastier brunch experiences, however the $10 mimosa pitchers bumped it up to a 3 star establishment. After hearing about the lively atmosphere and mimosa pitchers, we settled on The Sidewalk Café as our reunion brunch destination. When we arrived we surprisingly only had to wait for a few minutes before a table opened up. We ordered a smorgasbord of food and it was all just OK. There was nothing particularly special about it- just your standard brunch fare! For the record, there's nothing wrong with that! The music and staff totally added to the atmosphere and 2 pitchers later, we were having a blast. We ended up staying here for 3 whole hours without noticing that the time was steadily slipping away from us. I'm happy to say that we were never rushed. I think we would all agree that this is a solid spot and we'd definitely come back!

This place was some straight garbage. The only good part was our kind server, too bad but she wasn't edible, but hey neither was the food. 18 lb. portion of sauceless spaghetti...check, grade D beef chock full of gristle on French dip...check, sub par potato skins...check, and a salad that was 85% shit lettuce. I had heard this place was comparable, if not better than 3rd St. Diner...nooo way. The ambience of Sidewalk is nice, the service was friendly, but the food was no bueno. Considering this is a restaurant, it gets one star...restaurants should have edible food. Worst meal I've had out since I moved to RVA last summer...

While it may seem a bit dark on first impression, this is an excellent place to enjoy some spectacular offerings and stellar service. Came here yesterday with a lady friend trying to round out my card for the "Richmond Burger Week" and I was surprised they had so many offerings. Turned out that I was not only there during Burger Week but also on their $5 burger night! It's Burger-ception! It was a tough choice given all the great options on the list, though in the end I opted for The Godfather, a delicious burger served on a focaccia bun with marinara and fresh mozzarella on top. My friend ordered a sausage/pepper pasta. She got a caesar salad included in the price of her pasta (which tasted fresh), and the warm bread they brought to our table was great too. Both of our entrees were spectacular, and the portions were extremely generous as well. Once I polished off my meal, I helped her work on her pasta and we still didn't even manage to down half of it. Now those are portion sizes that make you want to say " 'Murica"! Service was excellent and very attentive, with refills coming in fast and furious whenever they were needed. As a server/bartender myself, I have to applaud them on their attention to this critical detail. Whether you're a glass-half-full or glass-half-empty kind of person, no one likes an empty glass! The bill at the end was more than reasonable given our fullness, though we did avoid alcohol so I can't comment on that aspect. All in all, this place was quite a find and I'd definitely return to try some of their other unique offerings! Overall: 4.5 stars ------------- Pros: - Tons of menu options. - Food was excellent. - Wednesday Burger Night makes it all so much more satisfying/cheap. - Service was quite good, though admittedly we did come slightly earlier than the dinner rush. Cons: - Inside is quite dark, though if you like that intimate dinner feeling this won't trouble you much. - Volume wasn't too bad when we went, though I can see it being a problem during their peak business hours.

I love this place! it's one of my favorite places to go with friends when we want to just sit and have a beer. the music is always good, food is good and reasonably priced, and they have a few good beer selections on tap! it does get crowded sometimes but it's never too hard to find a seat. the outdoor patio is nice and does get busy when the weather is nicer/warm. the servers are always friendly and attentive, I've never had a bad experience. Their cheese fries are great, and I would definitely recommend the gyro platter! there have been a couple times when I've been there and the owner's (I think?) Bernese mountain dog and chihuahua are out on the patio and I just love it - they're such sweet dogs and it definitely adds to the chill/laid-back atmosphere.

Stopped by for brunch, on a Monday, which of course they don't do. My mistake wasn't thinking. Did get drinks as planned however and the bartender was attentive and cordial. Nothing special about the interior, but it's just a small bar in the fan. Don't expect much more than that in this area.

This unsuspecting light blue corner building houses an interesting culinary experience that entertains both the early-morning brunchers and the late-night drunchies alike. The menus are vastly different, however both are highly recommended for taste, quantity, and price. 1. Cajun hash and eggs ($8.25): a hefty plate of roasted potato quarters, whole shrimp, and two eggs topped with a layer of cheese and a side of toast. Taste would've been even better with a tad bit more cajun seasoning or sauce. Nonetheless, quite palatable and filling for a weekend brunch. 2. Spaghetti A La Greek ($11.95): a humongous plate of oodles of noodles and choice of marinara/meat sauce. Um, yes, it's huge enough to feed two with a case of the drunchies. Service is good and the atmosphere lively with a row of benches alongside a well-stocked bar. Bills are automatically split for ya (no need to "overwork" your brain trying to calculate it all out; after all, you'll be in a food coma).

We were in Richmond from out of town and decided to check this place out based on yelp reviews. We have a daughter in a wheelchair and weren't sure how the wheelchair would fit, but accessibility was good. Bathrooms are too small for a wheelchair but tables work. Food was good and the people were super nice and talkative. Edina was so sweet to us and our daughter. My husband got the Cajun hash and really enjoyed it and I had French toast with eggs and potatoes. Good comfort food. We got there before they opened on a Saturday and didn't have to wait, but I heard it gets busy there.

Excellent brunch, but you better not have a headache because it is LOUD LOUD LOUD! Sidewalk is a very fun place to have brunch, but be prepared to feel like it's a Friday night. The music is loud, the people are loud, and shots are flowing.... At 10am! They have one of my favorite brunch items of anywhere- the Cajun Hash & Eggs! AWESOME! Add a pitcher of mimosa and you have a great start to your Saturday!

4 stars for the mozz sticks. Maybe they aren't even that special, I just love good, gooey mozzarella sticks. and the marinara tasted fresh and was great. however, would not order the gyro again.

We had brunch here last Sunday and it was great. Eggs Benedict with a huge portion of very good potatoes, asparagus, and Hollandaise was the perfect meal and very inexpensive. 2 Orders of Bennies, Orange Juice, and Iced Tea... $19.

Food was pretty good, but not worth the $15 dollars I spent getting a chicken sandwich, fries, and a coke. Although I did enjoy the little show that went on. youtube.com/watch?v=bBs6…

The service is pretty good here, usually a little noisy and crowded (but not overly noisy unless you go on a weekend night). They have a pretty good brunch menu. The food portions are very big and pretty tasty from what I've tried. Prices aren't too bad either.

Cool service, so-so menu... seems to have an identity crisis on food but after a couple of drinks, who really cares? Stop by late night for cheap wings.

Stopped by for brunch, on a Monday, which of course they don't do. My mistake wasn't thinking. Did get drinks as planned however and the bartender was attentive and cordial. Nothing special about the interior, but it's just a small bar in the fan. Don't expect much more than that in this area.

Four stars for the steak sandwich, it was just bumdiggity. The location has a really home-y feel and the atmosphere is definitely casual and friendly. A good place to grab a nice bite for lunch but just an all around good place to eat in general. First time here left a good impression, most likely will come back.

What can I say? Best brunch and best late night food in RVA. Most definitely a local favorite. Only downfall? Sometimes there's a long wait for brunch. But it's worth the wait!

  • Robert S.

  • Leah F.
