Good atmosphere & great food. One of the best burgers in RVA. Always a great choice for St. Patty's Day.

Maybe their plain old bar food is better, but the brunch was pretty bad. The french toast was dry and flavorless and the hashbrowns were not at all what one thinks of as hashbrowns. They were lukewarm, flavorless homefries. I was really surprised at how bad my meal was given all the positive reviews. I barely ate any of it, and left hungry. I will not be returning.

Went to O'Tooles tonight and all I can say is the place is average. It used to be wonderful years ago. BF ordered the reuben with a side of onion rings. I ordered the Greek salad. Figured this was a safe bet. First, the Greek salad had about a dozen pepperoncini and a zillion sliced generic black olives (the tasteless kind). So after removing said ingredients, the Greek salad looked mighty thin. I also discovered a lettuce stem which is inedible. Even the feta was meh. On to the sandwich...the reuben comes on regular toasted bread, not the classic rye bread. Consequently, the soft bread quickly became mushy with the sauerkraut and russian dressing. And there was very little corned beef. All in all a disappointing sandwich. And the onion rings...they came out cold. The waitress quickly brought out another order and they were just lukewarm. By that point, I was just ready to eat and get the heck out of there. While our waitress was nice, she reeked of cigarettes. Will I be back? Nah!

Okay, I still love the Greek salad and today I tried the cheese steak. Their sandwiches are better than their steaks, so maybe that's where their strong talent lies. My boss had the French onion soup and loved the extra anchovies on her salad. We had the same server that helped me last week and she was very nice (as usual).

Have been coming here for years! Great music and food Friday and Saturday nights. My standard order is the french dip with onion rings. Probably the best onion rings in Richmond! Portions are generous. Wait staff is attentive and fun. This is my go to place for weekend fun or a quick weeknight dinner with friends.

We're local to this restaurant so that may make us bias. It's always good food and good service. Their onion rings are the best and burgers are delicious(veggie and turkey options available).

Eh...it's OK. I moved to the area recently and hadn't been to O'tooles in maybe 20 yrs. Had brunch on Sat and the pancakes were very good, but had lunch with a friend today and everything seemed frozen and not fresh. The crowd there seems a little on the old side to me, and I'm middle aged! I think it's a bit run down and don't plan to go back except maybe to try brunch again. Cross the river and go to some of the good fan places it's only a few miles more.

Went here for dinner. Meh. Bangers and mash were passable. Waitress had the personality of a house plant and got our order wrong. We had to grab her attention so she would take our order. And will someone please reupholster the damn seats? Unless you're going for the beer, skip it and go to one of the many fantastic restaurants in the area.

Who wouldn't love a place that has a pint of Guinness as an appetizer. Terrorists, that's who. Try the nachos.

Another delicious lunch. Oburger medium blue cheese crumbles grilled peppers and onions. Crispy fat fries. Bloody Mary the man had a cowboy burger and a Guinness

Don't go to be stunned. This is a really great, peaceful, neighborhood place where we all can meet comfortably for some really fantastic drinks and very consistent food. It's a cozy, comfortable environment with plenty of bar space. An excellent spot to just sit and talk and waste a rainy evening laughing. There's never "that drunk girl" begging dudes for drinks, or the frat bros doing shots and acting like fools. It's a mellow, adult, companionable environment. The bar staff is very attentive and personable without being over bearing. Drinks are fairly priced and poured appropriately. The fish and chips are SUPERB. The rest of the menu is large, with good variety and it's good, but not great. OTooles is a fantastic place to go with old friends for a relaxed meal out.

It's been about 40 years since I was last here and it has not changed a bit since then. And that's a good thing. This is one of the last great family-owned neighborhood restaurants and watering hole. The food is generous, excellent and reasonably priced. The service is exceptional, friendly and down home. Don't expect fancy. This place doesn't know the meaning. Do expect to enjoy the break from chains.

O'Toole's is one of those restaurant that I have pretty much overlooked on a regular basis. I live somewhat nearby and am always driving past but until recently never thought to stop in. I have to agree with other reviewers who have pointed out that having Guinness on the appetizer list was a nice introduction to O'Toole's. It seems like a pretty standard bar - vast menu of typical American and Irish pub fare, dark interior, lots of beers on tap. My husband ordered the fish sub and I ordered the Reuben. Everything we ordered was good - nothing really to complain about or write home about. I'm glad we finally tried O'Toole's and feel I have a local bar to visit now when the craving for a few pints and some standard pub fare hits.

Nice place, but the food is average at best. The only word to describe the mashed potatoes is "sucked".

Another great burger and steak fries at my favorite restaurant! My better half enjoyed John O'tooles mamas chicken salad croissant

A few months ago, I chimed in on a Yelp "Talk" conversation about the best cheeseburgers in Richmond and suggested that O'Toole's had a good burger. Since then, I've eaten at many of the other places suggested in that conversation. I was back at O'Toole's tonight and can now, unequivocally, state that I think O'Toole's makes the best burger in Richmond! Perfectly grilled (I asked for medium and it came out medium; a rarity for restaurants!), nice bun, good toppings, quality beef. Every bite was deliciously juicy and perfect! By the way, I ordered the "O Burger" and recommend you do too. I also paid the extra $1 to upgrade from fries to onion rings...a good decision as they were crispy and delicious. The dipping sauce was a little weak in my opinion so I went for my fallback of ketchup. After working on the house all weekend, eating this great burger and drinking a cold beer in a frosty glass was exactly what I needed! Besides the burgers, this is a great place! Every time I've been, whether for brunch, lunch, or dinner, I've been fully satisfied. They are a friendly bunch in a cool atmosphere.

I've lived right around the corner for sometime now but I finally got around to going here last night. Went to catch the yanks game around 8, pretty decent crowd. Seems to be a lot of locals/regulars. Ordered a Guinness and a basket of onion rings, which were the best onions rings I've ever had in the city of Richmond. Bartenders were friendly and efficient, the facilities were very clean, the beer was cold and the food was great. However, only giving them 4 stars because I waited almost 15 minutes just for some onion rings.

Went here tonight for dinner because of a Groupon. Service was good, and the food was quick. Pretty decent sized portions as well. I had the blackened Grouper which was mediocre at best. The Ms. had a chicken sandwich that was also very average. Heard that they have a decent beer selection but we didn't do any drinking during our visit. Also heard that they've been around for 40+ years so they must be doing something right. Pretty comprehensive menu, and the restaurant was decently busy, but we had no problem being seated immediately without a reservation. The ambiance was pretty cool and it definitely has the pub feel to it. If you're looking for decent food, pretty decent sized portions with quick and efficient service then this is definitely the place. If you are however looking to wow your taste buds, this is not the place. Also, don't be worried about limited parking upon arrival as they rent out a church parking lot behind the establishment.

O'Toole's is a good neighborhood restaurant/bar in the Forest Hill section of the Southside. They have been around forever as have some of their patrons. The atmosphere has changed (literally) since the smoking ban, but it has made it much easier to enjoy a meal there. The food is nothing fancy but decent quality shows in most of their dishes. Food wise, I prefer their breakfast over dinner but really like that I can get a Harps draft with my burger. Overall a good neighborhood place to enjoy decent food, good drinks, and being Irish.

Nice atmosphere and good food. The onion rings are amazing. Just make sure you get the 1/2 basket and not the full basket. Sandwiches are very good.

I'm so happy to have O'Toole's near my neighborhood. It is a classic and they make the very best onion rings. I rarely order anything but a burger because they are so well prepared & delicious. Don't expect fancy food, look for very good quality basics. (And I hear the vegetarian pizza is fantastic.)

This is a classic neighborhood place. We don't veer too far off the tried-and-true menu items like sandwiches, blue-plate style entrees and good pub food items. It's gotten much more crowded since they went non-smoking, and we certainly go more often. We appreciate the beer selection and the new expanded bar. I'd love to see a really good happy hour special, that would bring me in more often. The service is always good and the food is consistent and relatively speedy. Favorite menu items: The burgers, pork chop special, shoestring fries, Legend Brown on tap, and the crispy chicken salad. (We once had really bad steaks that we sent back twice, but we just don't order steaks there anymore---it's the only time we've ever sent food back there.)

A pretty standard bar/pub style menu, but doesn't limit itself to comfort foods. The "O" Burger is still my favorite; salads are sizeable; specials are creative. Did you know that you can get either a small OR large Greek salad? Not on the menu, but order a small and top it with grilled chicken or tuna and you've got a great meal on the cheap! Start with my favorite appetizer: a Guinness. No kidding... it's on the menu!

I've never been disappointed with my food, and portions are always huge. Great neighborhood bar, especially after their recent expansion, and it's one of the few places on the Southside that's smoke-free. Good selection of local, import and light beers that appeals to everyone.

I was so excited for a real Irish pub. For great fish and chips. For a fun atmosphere. Not at all what we got. The walls are filthy. The menu was caked in what looked like boogers. The onion rings were bland and my first bite was all brown onion skin. Our pretzel appetizer seemed like it had just come out of the microwave (hot in spots and hard as a rock). The onion rings and fish were fried so long that they had a burnt taste to them. The fish was fine once I flaked off the crust, though, and the coleslaw was good. My husband's french dip sandwich was "eh, ok." Portions were HUGE, but we won't come back.

If you're Irish you get it, if you're not well you'll still get it at O'Tools's. What a very cool spot for a Guinness and a bite to eat. The 80s on 8 Sirius XM radio jamming the hits from my youth and a comfortable booth set me up for a great long (my choice) lunch. You must get the Onion Rings here as I promise they are one of the most talked about items they serve. I always order the large and try but never quite finish even with guests. The basket is huge $7.99! My wonderful and friendly server Ann, convinced me it was a burger kind of day so I went with it and was very happy I did. The Guinness on Tap is another great reason to spend quality time here. The owner Mr. O'Toole is always on site making sure everything is on point. Everyday is St. Patricks Day at O'Toole's!

Perfect neighborhood pub--wide ranging menu (including the Irish classics, but well beyond that too.) Try the French Dip and have them add the grilled onions from their steak sandwich. Plus, the owner is very active and supportive of the neighborhood elementary school--always nice to support a business that gives back!

You know, for the price and all he specials they have, this is an awesome place. Their bartenders are nice and personable, and their food is pretty good, especially for the price. I wentfor half off burger night and their burgers were going out like hot cakes. People were taking up the VAST bar space to get their burgers and beers in. And I don't blame them. What is better than beers and burgers?? Duh! Nothing! They did run out of my fave beer after I had one, so that was disappointing, and their bar could use some wipe downs between patrons (stickiness does not go well with eating...), but the bartenders made up for that. The parking is ample, the patrons are surprisingly well-behaved, and the atmosphere, pretty neighborhood friendly. Comin back here with a girlfriend to take advantage of their deals! Come join!
