I can't understand why so many people rant and rave over this place. The location was bad, the establishment was dirty and dimly lit, and I actually witnessed the chef put his entire hand on our meal to check the temperature, as well as do this for other customers. Disgusting! I got the Cajun mess and it was meh. I wasn't a fan of the the flavor, and it was really just a bunch of random ingredients thrown into a pile, all coated with an overpowering smoky Cajun flavor (not in a good way). The side of potatoes that came with the meal were the best part and they were burned, and also coated in smoky Cajun seasoning. The hot chocolate literally tasted like steamed milk and cheapo whipped cream. The menu was limited; I couldn't find anything that I really wanted. This place was a complete dive and I won't be returning. I am quite disappointed because I had heard so many good things about it.

Hadn't eaten at Millie's in a few years, so on a whim, on the way home around 9pm, hungry, I stopped in for dinner. Oh my! I could have just stopped with the savory Pork Cheek Bolognese, but thankfully further indulged in some Spicy Thai Shrimp. A day later, my palette remains obliged to Chef Ian Robbins, a culinary artist extraordinaire. Our attendant, Jamie, was delightful and timely. Dining at Millie's last night actually utilized all five of my senses, simultaneously. Outstanding!

Overly crowded - 30 people in a 10foot area will not serve food outside, rude waitress, hostess. The cooks do not wear facial hair nets. They all have long beards to there chest.

  • Christina S.

Even at 10:30 AM on a Saturday, Millie's was ridiculously crowded. We sat for an hour waiting, but at least we got to enjoy a mimosa while we did it. The mimosas were very refreshing, but they got a little watery at the end. The waitresses are very nice, but there's so many people in here, and everyone is so hungry from waiting that it seems like the food takes forever to arrive. Order another mimosa. You're going to need it. I'm not even going to talk about what I got, because I was a fool. The only thing to get at Millie's is the Devil's Mess. If you get anything else, you're a fool. Believe me, I got something else, and it was not worth it. I took one bite of my friend's Devil's Mess and I'm a believer. Don't be a fool. Follow the crowd, just this once. It's so worth it.

Extremely crowded, and it's so busy that your table barely gets service. The food and drinks were great, don't get me wrong. I wouldn't go back again unless entertaining some out of towners. Just make sure you know exactly what you need before your waitress comes back to the table.

The food was great and the staff was wonderful. Expect a small wait due to how busy the place gets. Would return in a heart beat. Jose R. Reyes Arlington, VA

A couple of years ago I ate there and thought it was great. Was there again for VCU graduation and this time it was kind of a disaster. Appetizers were great. Service was a bit slow, but polite. One of the entrees was horrendously over salted, like eating eating a tablespoon of straight salt in every bite. A different dish was also over salted, but not quite so badly. The horrendous one got sent back, replaced by something different, but the replacement was also too salty, but not inedible. Either over brining, the chef has lost his taste (or didn't taste), or they've switched salts and didn't realize the new one is "saltier". Whatever, the case, I hope they get it straightened out, because it was a huge disappointment, given my previous experience and given the prices they charge.

Excellent food. Long wait but well worth it. Paul, the owner and the staff are all fantastic and very welcoming. Get Benny, a fantastic treat or any of the Messes (frittatas).

We visited Richmond for V-Day and inquired locals about the good spots for breakfast. Millie's Diner was one of three recommended, so we decided to try it. We made it there on Sunday around 11:00 AM. The two of us.. and just about the rest of the world. We were warned it was going to be crowded. It was extremely crowded. But we were super excited to try this place and didn't mind the wait. It all took about an hour, but Michelle, the nice & busy bartender & waitress didn't mind filling up my Bloody Mary glass while we were in line. If you go there for the food, it's not bad. If you go there for the atmosphere, turn around, this isn't your place. There are people lined up getting close & personal with each other, the waitresses can barely make their way to your table through the crowd. Not to mention they're hovering over your booth.. Alas, the food. Once we sat down, the food came fast. I ordered the Cajun Mess, the boyfriend had a quail dish with rarebit. The flavors were pretty good. The "mess" was just that.. a big mess. There was nothing composed about it, just egg, tomatoes, craw fish and some seasoning. Unfortunately, the moisture from the tomatoes made it even messier and not very attractive to eat, just rather sloppy. The companion of mess was a decent sized portion of cajun roasted potatoes. I was not a fan, unfortunately. They looked amazing, but the blackened seasoning was so overpowering, it lingered to look and took over the rest of your food. As a huge potato fan, I was utterly disappointed. The boyfriend enjoyed his quail and loved the rarebit. He was also unimpressed with his potatoes. I liked the place for uniqueness. All the waitresses were extremely nice - I was impressed - between the noise and the crowds, that's rather telling. I'd go again to try their lunch or dinner. I just hope to skip the hour-long wait.

The food is delicious, I will readily grant that, and would usually have earned four stars easily, but the service was not especially attentive, I and my dinner partner had to wait Despite having a reservation [though not so long as people without, I am certain] and the noise levels are absolutely deafening, to the point where we had trouble conversing. I realize the space is such that sound bounces and there is not necessarily a lot that can be done for that, but it didn't help my experience.

One of the finest brunches in all of Richmond. I've been here a number of times and never disappointed. The Cajun Mess is absolutely excellent. This place gets crazy busy so make sure you plan ahead!

First time here for dinner. The menu was somewhat limited; however, don't let that fool you! Our group of 7 tried four different entrees. Everyone was pleased with the portions, presentation and flavor! I can personally vouch for the spicy Thai shrimp! And I tried the seared tuna which was Cooked to perfection. I would recommend this for dinner. The Service was friendly and attentive.

Tha Bomb! Greeted by the cooks hard at work churning out one tantalizing meal after another, I was automatically surrounded by a world of feasting. The place was packed and for good reason. The meals were literally flying out of the kitchen to hungry patrons, which made the wait very tolerable. Once seated, the waitress quickly got our order and we had a chance to check out the retro posters before the flying food came our way. It was at least twice as tasty as it looked with an excellent blend of spices and favors mixed in a stomach warming, hearty "mess" of food. It didn't take me long to finish my Castro's Mess with Cuban pork, tortillas, black beans, cheddar, and poco de gallo. The place got some amazing dishes, definitely one of my favorite in Richmond. Just go to see for yourself ;)

OMG. What a delicious dinner. I love watermelon salad- this was the best. And the Thai Shrimp and Crab pappardelle and mushrooms-we ate every last bite and loved each forkful. Service was so friendly and attentive. We never stop in Richmond. Now we have a reason to pull off the road.

We used to live next to Millie's, so we have been here many times for weekend brunch. If you don't get here 15 minutes before they open and stand in line, you will be waiting. That said, the food is delicious so it's worth the wait to try it out. If you want decent/good/great service, you will not get that here. The wait staff sucks and at times is blatantly rude to your face. My mom is one of those indecisive diners who needs more than 2 minutes of reading a chalkboard to make up her mind. I feel confident stating that the servers here hate diners like my mother, because their goal is to get you in and out the door as quickly as possible with virtually no interaction. Yet, we all tolerate the belittling and continue to eat here because the food is so damn tasty.

Millie's is a Richmond brunch staple. I have been here on three or four occasions, both for Saturday and Sunday brunch. While the food and drinks are quite good, the service rivals some of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had. Sunday brunch normally starts off with a one hour wait, which isn't too bad since you sort of expect it. It is a small and popular place. The delicious rum punch helps the time pass quickly! Afterwards you are seated, given a few minutes to order (they don't have menus, only a chalk board), and the food comes out in a pretty timely manner. Although I cant speak of their dinner menu, the brunch menu is very delicious. My main reason why I dread going to Millie's is not because of the long lines, loud atmosphere, the refusal to split a check, or the trying to hard to be hipster vibe, but rather because of how incredibly rude the wait staff is. This is not specific to just the waitresses either. The bartender couldn't care less that you exist. It seems like it is the most inconvenient task in the world for her to pour you a rum punch. The manager (or who I think is the manager) yells at his employees in front of customers. Overall it is a hot mess. Usually when you finish with your meal the waitress will ask you if you want dessert or coffee, and if you say yes you can see visible disdain on her face. She will then suggests that you take it to go since the line outside is over 1 hour. When she brings the coffee out it is cold, while the creamer is warm. I normally never review a place unless I have been there on a few occasions so I am not biased towards a very negative or very positive experience that just happened to occur on that particular day. But after having visited Millie's multiple times on different days of the week I am confident in saying that the horrendous service is just an integral part of the Millie's experience. If you want to enjoy a delicious brunch and feel belittled, Millie's is your place!

I was sick all day after eating the brunch there. Mimosas and bloody Mary's are 8$ a piece and nothing special. Will not return.

I always a big "Benedict Egg" fan! Their Benedict Egg is soooo delicious! I love their brunch because it's really fresh and delicious! It's also a good place to get together with friends!

We waited here in line for Sunday Brunch, and this place was definitely worth the wait. The drinks helped with the waiting time too. I thought it was pretty awesome that they took our names for the line our drink order at the same time. Very decent Bloody Mary. I had the lobster scrambled egg (or whatever it's called on the menu). It was very tasty. Only downside to this place for me was the screaming children. The place just seemed full of those during our visit. Otherwise, great place!

  • Patreace T.

Can't go wrong with Millie's. The wait this morning wasn't as long as it can get on a weekend, maybe 15 minutes. My mom ordered a mimosa while we waited and she really enjoyed that. I tried the Cajun mess this time and it was everything I could hope it would be. Great taste, kind of spicy, and oh so delicious. My mom got the flank steak and poached egg cooked hard. The steak was a little tough, she wasn't given a steak knife. But ultimately she loved it. It came with asparagus and she said to me "who knew asparagus and egg would taste so good together".

    (4)
  • Jerry N.

Reputation is better than the food. Don't get me wrong, its good, but the staff tends to be border-line unfriendly and if you go for brunch you will wait a solid 45 -60 minutes.

Since we've lived in Church Hill Millie's has been a brunch go-to. However, my husband perked when he learned Millie's has a rather tony dinner service, and he suggested coming for dinner for a late Valentine's Day celebration (note--do NOT go out on the actual V-Day, one of the worst days for restaurants), so we did. Unlike brunch, one can walk into Millie's and immediately be seated for dinner, a boon to those with impatient spouses (hi, honey!). The dinner menu is small but ambitious, as is the cocktail list. I went with a concoction called the Bee's Knees, which consists of gin, simple syrup, grenadine and honey. If you've ever sucked out the nectar from a honeysuckle blossom, you've tasted a Bee's Knees. It was well worth breaking my self-imposed rule of "no hard liquor at dinner." I drew out two for as long as I could, totally enjoying them. Both of us were in the mood for cow so we ordered medium-rare ribeyes. The steaks were on the thin side but seasoned and cooked perfectly, layered between a lovely buttered sliced potato and garlic-buttered sauteed spinach. It was one of those meals that get lingered over--bite of steak, bite of spinach, sip of Bee's Knees, bite of potato, repeat. I LOVE lingering over meals. Since this was a special occasion, we had to get dessert. Okay, just me, but still. I ordered chopped pears steeped in red wine and covered with "Chantilly" (read "whipped") cream. Again, delicious and worth lingering over. Dinner at Millie's isn't cheap--one serving of the Bee's Knees was ten bucks on its own; our entire meal was close to $140 before tip. As with brunch the place gets lively and loud for dinner, so if one desires a quiet meal this probably isn't the best place to come. I don't mind noise but I did have to flag down the one male server and tell him to STOP STOMPING as he was literally shaking our table to the point that we were grabbing for glasses (note to self--get a table farther away from the doorway next time). But the food and booze are first-rate, so if you're not afraid of noise and liveliness enjoy your dinner!

This is a local favorite and understandably so. They serve up comfort food in an energetic environment. You can't go wrong going here for brunch.

Went for a special occasion recently (take a guess) and the dinner was awesome! It was a set menu but many choices and fairly reasonable compared to other restaurants around RVA. A few people mentioned they didn't realize Millie's does dinner but they do and they do it as well or better than brunch. As some one mentioned earlier, it is not really "diner" food, more high end in taste and price but still casual. We had the salad and seafood bisque which were both good. Entrees were the steak and duck again both excellent, duck probably more so. Dessert has always been good for me at Millies and the chocolate cake and lavendar creme brulee did not disappoint. Portion sizes were enough to be very full and no leftovers. I tried the drink special which I didn't love, will get wine next time. Service is always friendly to me. Parking is kind of annoying but expected in the area.

Being from out of town and looking for a decent meal to quiet the savages, we looked up this place and got a table. We were pretty happy with our choices. I had Cornish game hens which were good. They were a little salty, but since I haven't had them in a while, I wasn't sure if they were usually brined or not. Other choices were steak and veg ramen, all of which were good.

So don't let this small hole in the wall place fool you. It's no burger/sandwich joint. It's actually a pretty fancy/higher priced restaurant during the dinner hours. My husband and I live right next to the place and for the longest time we thought that it was an easy going all american burger place like Poe's Pub right around the corner, so we went in a little under dressed. When we got there we noticed the white table cloths and got asked about reservations. Instantly confused couple. When we were handed the menu there were only a few items on it and they stated that the menu was ever changing. Other than the shock of it not being what we expected, the food was outstanding! Cooked to perfection. It won't be an everyday thing, but it will be a special date night type of place in the near future!

I think this place is kind of overrated. It's pretty expensive for what it is. It's a dive diner that tries to serve uppity food.

Was lucky enough to eat at Millie's a year ago when in Richmond for a wedding. It was the best brunch experiences of my life. Modern diner with southern hospitality. I can't wait to go back!

Being the only person in Richmond who hasn't tried Millie's, I decided to check it out last Sunday. I really don't understand the hype. The food was good...not great. We got there a half-hour before they opened and the line had already started at the door. Maybe I am just cranky and near-sighted, but why do restaurants think it's cool to write the menu on a blackboard? Half the time the writing is so small, you can't read it. If you have any type of food allergy, it's impossible to discern exactly what ingredients are included in each dish when all the words are crammed together and there is someone behind you breathing down your neck because they can't see the board either. But I digress...to the food. I had the devil's mess, which was quite tasty. Unfortunately, the server brought me huevos instead. To her credit, she was super cool about the mix up and brought out an order of devils mess a few minutes later. My husband ordered a poached egg on a bagel with smoked salmon. The eggs and potatoes were cold and he found a hair in his food. Gross. Some helpful hints: If you order any of the "mess" dishes, you are unable to substitute/hold ingredients. There are no pancakes, waffles, etc. on the menu, so if your kid is a picky eater, this may not be the best place for you. Luckily my son was happy to eat toast and a side of bacon and thought it was the best place ever.

Millies is a great place to get some good brunch at okay prices. The 'messes' are very good and priced adequately compared to the other dishes they serve. Recommendations include the Castro, devil and veggie messes. Their coffee isn't half bad either for what it's worth. The menu does change daily for brunch and dinner as both are served at separate times and everything is prepared as it is ordered. The only issue is that the location is rather small and it can get pretty busy so plan ahead and make sure your party is together and prepared before going. Also, be sure to find good parking because the streets can fill up quick. The fact that it does full up like that is a good indicator of its popularity and its quality.

Their brunch is amazing. The staff is great but service is a bit slow at times. That is offset by their food though, I cannot get enough of their Devil's Mess. I'd recommend it to anyone who is in the area - you must experience Millie's once in your life.

We come here every time we visit richmond. Friendly staff and delicious breakfast. It is somewhat of a dive and small, so if you are not into that, you will not like it here. Nothing fancy, just awesome brunch.

Myself and three friends went to Millie's Diner last Sunday and while the food was good, the staff were less than accommodating. Let me first say the shrimp pasta was delicious. But when I eat out, I rate a place on the overall experience. We unknowingly arrived 10 minutes before they opened. Upon entering a girl approached us and told us they open in 10 minutes and we could be sat then. We said that was fine, we did not mind waiting to be sat. The girl then asked us to wait outside for the 10 minutes. I used to work at a restaurant and if someone unlocked the door early and someone came in, we accommodated them. We did not ask them to wait outside in 40 degree weather. Millie's states on its menu that they do not do separate checks. This is fine. Businesses may have policies and people may disagree with them. Unfortunately, we only had credit cards. We were talking it out and trying to figure out how we could go to an ATM after and pay someone back. The waiter came over and acted as we had vexed him -- and said, "Do you all need separate checks?" I thought, great, he is going to separate them for us. We told him the exact amount to put on each card because we had broken it down. He ignored that we gave him three totals and came back with two checks. We put a card in one and two cards in the other. He then appeared frustrated and said, "You need MORE separate checks?" Once he got the checks squared away and tips were written, we chatted a couple of minutes. A few minutes too long, as we're mid-conversation the waiter comes over and picks up all the receipts without saying anything. I would suggest Millie's if you wanted to place a to-go order but not if you want to have a great experience eating out.

My friend and I swung by here for brunch on Saturday because she had "heard good things." It wasn't until I checked Yelp that I got really excited about where we were going. There was a small parking lot behind the gas station across the street that we pulled into, but that was entirely full by the time we left. We came by around 9:30 a.m., and there was a short wait even when we arrived and a large crowd outside when we left. I loved that they took our name for the waitlist and our drink orders at the same time. There's nothing better than being able to sip on your morning coffee or Bloody Mary while you wait. Seriously, all places should do this, I was perfectly content to drink my coffee and enjoy the cool morning while we sat out on their relatively small patio out front. Once we were seated, we read the menu (short and sweet but with lots of variety and posted on a chalkboard above the bar area) and debated who was going to get what so we could try a little of everything. I ordered the benny with Virginia ham on a croissant and she had the savory pancake with mushrooms and swiss. Both were delicious. The only downside is that the place is tiny and loud. It's a great diner type feel, but make sure you're up for it first thing in the morning. We also saw the manger or owner (or someone in charge) angrily storm back to the kitchen and full out scream at someone back there, which was strange and slightly off putting, but I don't think most people even noticed and I doubt that's an ordinary occurrence. Because the place is quite cozy, the entire time we were there, we kept overhearing amazing things about the messes. If that many people were raving about them, they must be good. I almost ordered one, but I'm not wild on spicy food for breakfast. If you are though, this place seems like it would be perfect. Even the home fries had a hearty zing to them. Our waitress was super friendly and fast and the prices were pretty cheap, not like the jacked up fancy brunch prices you see elsewhere. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in the area.

You must try this place. If you are willing to wait, as it is a very popular place. They hook you up with drinks as you are waiting, and seat you as soon as they can. The food is very flavorful, and different. Not your average breakfast place. I always order the Devils mess, which is a spicy but awesome dish!

This restaurant made a point in several online locales of saying they took NO reservations. Then we show up for dinner, ready for a wait possibly but we were turned away because we had no reservations. The hostess was also less than friendly and not at all apologetic. Very disappointing....

We had to wait over 45 minutes to be seated for breakfast/lunch ... I'd suggest going early when they open or later to avoid a long wait. The dining room is really loud, but the staff was friendly and helpful. We were hoping to try the corned beef hash (that we had read reviews about), but it's only available on Sundays. The huevos rancheros were good, but not as good as the ones we had at Citizen the day before. My husband got the flank steak and a mimosa, and both were also really good.

Note: this was from jan 14 wallowing in my yelp drafts I have friends who come to Millie's whenever they are in Richmond. I had never been able to join them though. So I decided to just make the trip by myself to see what all the hype was about. Walking into Millie's you immediately see what type of place it is. The kitchen is immediately to your right thru the door. It's a tiny square with the cook frantically filling orders. I would dare say most home kitchens have a bigger set up. The whole space gives the vibe of grandma is cooking you dinner plate by plate. The menu is small so no menus just a chalkboard and small print out on the tables listing the specials. I ordered the Cajun mess. A delicious frittata of sausage and crawfish and a side of perfectly done house fries. This food is smack your mother good. It's gosh darn great. Service though stinks. We had the waitress with the stanky face and attitude, but food prevails

Recommended by one of our local associates and would probably never had noticed this place. Was a little apprehensive when I walked in, it reminded me of the old coffee houses I went to in my early years. It ended being a very nice experience. I had the signature spicy shrimp and the house salad. The salad was excellent with fresh field greens, blue cheese and a light vinegar dressing. The spicy shrimp was to die for. Enough heat to let you know it isn't bland, the shrimp was cooked perfectly and offered a fair quantity. The spices were just right and the fillers (cabbage, noodles...) were cooked just right. Could not eat it all, but managed to split desert with my coworker which was a puff pastry filled with vanilla gelato. Again, an excellent dish. Service was great, our server was friendly and was adept at knowing when to serve and when to hang back. There is no question that I will go back next time I visit our Richmond facility.

Eek..it pains me to write this. I had been so looking forward to trying this place out. Maybe brunch just isn't a good time! We waited over an hour for a table. We were sat by the bar and it was very cramped (5 of us). My friend with us was vegan and they did not have any vegan-friendly menu options AND gave her a hard time when she ordered something with the meat on the side! I get that it's cool to have a small menu and to not allow modifications and be semi-friendly and pseudo-hipster but dang...where did the Southern charm escape to? Richmond is being overrun with dirty little overpriced restaurants that think they are so COOL! Anyways, I'd rather brunch at 821 or Weezy's than this place...prices and service are way better!

I typically don't like restaurant styled eggs. They aren't seasoned enough or too runny. Well, I am all for Millie's eggs. They were seasoned well and oh so good. The food my friend ordered looked like a lot of stuff mixed together, but she said it was delicious. I kept it simple with eggs, bacon, and toast. Boring... I know, but the eggs definitely picked up the thrill factor.

Visited Millie's for the first time with a friend. The food was delightful; even their version of hash browns had onion, green pepper and a touch of herbs, with a delicate taste that was the best I've found. The burrito with beef and black beans and cheese was excellent. My friend was devouring her steak, which she said was exceptional in both taste and tenderness, cooked perfectly. The only unnerving part of the meal was: When I held the table to sit down the corner was covered with a blob of greasy sauce (which I cleaned up with a napkin). The cup of tea was excellent; one chooses from a good selection. However, I noticed toward the end that the bottom section of the cup was covered with spots of some kind, which one could wipe off with a finger. Not just a few speckles, but all around the bottom third. It's rather dark inside so such things may not be obvious at first. We visited the LR and the steps which led down were slick from something; we had to hold tight to the banister. The area down there was so dark that reading the signs for "Men" and "Women" was difficult. I felt sorry for an older gentleman who was embarrassed in not finding the right door--he almost entered the ladies room because neither he nor I could see the room to the right just beyond the lavatory (which is outside for all to use). A staff person came by and directed him. We couldn't understand why there couldn't be sufficient light for that area, nor why the doorjambs to the doors had a good deal of paint scraped off. Maybe a "distressed" look? Scratched, peeling paint is immaterial, but lack of light down stairs, dirty cups and table edge are not in keeping with the quality of food at this well-known establishment. It's easier to clean up than it is to find a good chef. This was a Thursday at lunch; maybe the cleaning staff comes later.

As good as they say After hearing about Millie's for more than a year, I had still not made it out there. I'd like to say that it's because Shockoe is sooo far away, but let's be honest, it's just laziness. When a friend came into town, there was more no excuses left. On a Saturday morning, we trekked over to Millies and was met with the dozens of people waiting outside. I would not be defeated, so we waited. Food I ordered the Devil's Mess and was met with a steaming plate of eggs and potatoes. The eggs were fluffy and cheesy, but the Indian spices is what really makes it special. The potatoes were soft and crispy. The best part was that I got to eat it again the next day. Ambiance and Service 4/5, for the wait Food 5/5 Value 5/5

Brunch/Lunch perfected by this small and cozy establishment featuring design throwbacks to the days of jukeboxes and hand-written menus hanging on the wall. If you're in Shockoe Bottom, this is one of the major destinations for locals and visitors alike; which, unfortunately means that you are in for a long wait. Is it worth it? Certainly, yes, of course. First, if you can go early (e.g. right when it opens) then do so. Unless of course this is a weekend brunch in which case you are obliged to arrive even earlier. We came exactly when they opened for brunch on a Wednesday and were seated immediately. Second, there is only street parking which can be a bit of a hassle. If you absolutely must, you might be able to sneak a parking space in the CVS parking a block over. Third, I'd advise you not to come in a group larger than 4-5 unless you are wiling to wait for your stomach to implode from hunger. The space is not conducive to large groups. Fourth, look for the menu at the far end of the wall and for the bathroom downstairs, which is quite adorbs. Now for the food: 1. Special menu: Salmon with side of cooked spinach and delicious sweet potato puree. $12. If you are the type who cannot finish your food, you are guaranteed to finish this one. As professed by a friend who is such a type, she claims this is a top favorite. * 2. Special menu: Chorizo burrito. $11. Absolutely delicious, well-seasoned, and mouth-wateringly good. I don't think I've tasted such deliciousness in a long time. 3. Cajun Mess $12. Light scrambled eggs with sausage, crawfish, tomatoes and more. Mhm, a classic favorite amongst many. * *came with a small bread basket with jam and butter. Service was good, but the few downsides include not being able to split checks, the somewhat high price for the amount of food (though you will be full), and the small space for larger groups. Overall, give it a try if you're early or lucky enough to be seated in a timely manner.

3.5 had been wanting to go here forever and I finally got the chance to and unfortunately I was disappointed. I think this place is a little overrated and I've definitely had better food in Richmond, although my chick pea cake sandwich was delicious. the service was awful and it wasn't crowded at all so the waitress had no reason to be so lifeless and rude. also I didn't like that there was only potatoes for a side. if you're going to offer one side you better make sure they're the best potatoes in the world, I took one bite and left the rest on my plate. the inside of this place was really cute and I'm glad I finally tried it but I don't think I'll be going back.

If our dinner last night was an indication of things to come, the Millie's that we all loved and enjoyed is DEAD! Has the place been sold? I didn't see a single familiar face. What happened to the fabulous long term wait staff and the great chefs? The food was pathetic, flavor and presentation, and service was on point with the food. If our experience last night is the new standard for Millie's, Richmond has lost a rare and special "one of a kind" restaurant. Millie's may ride its reputation for a while but no way am I going to spend $300 for that sub-average experience again. As a long term Millie's fan, I am devastated!

The food here is worth it and very good- and that's why even after the SUPER rude experience I had (see below), I'm sure I will be back. Had to stand and wait to be seated in hot small space- and the owner himself took my coffee from me without asking. I brought my own bc I knew I might be waiting for awhile to be seated. This café's schtick is that they "offer" you a drink while your waiting but charge you at the end. So I brought my own coffee to drink before I would be seated. I like to be charged for what I am served at my seat. I would have even drank my coffee outside if he would have asked me before taking it from my hands. Very rude. Despite this experience, I would still recommend this spot to anyone visiting richmond looking for a unique breakfast or brunch spot. The restaurant is loud and always crowded on weekend mornings. Find parking wherever you can on the street. Do not come here for special orders like egg whites only or no onion. If you are vegetarian or vegan they will do their best to accommodate. For vegans they can bring you their signature black beans with pico de gallo, avocado and verde sauce. To close out, my rude experience with the owner stems from the fact that this place does so well, attracts do many diverse customers, and is famous here in Richmond, and the owner and staff know it. The honeymoon phase with their customer base is long over and sometimes when you eat here they act like they are doing you a favor. If you do well in crowded new york diners, then you will be comfortable at Millie's. If you were expecting southern hospitality or a relaxed meal, do not waste your time.

Went for dinner during RVA Restaurant Week, and I was not impressed. The portion sizes are TINY: for example, my dessert was an almond cake with honey gelato, and the "cake" was smaller than the size of my thumb, and the scoop of gelato was not much larger. The food itself was ok, but definitely not worth the price. Cornish game hen was 100% forgettable and asparagus soup was a weird mix of bitter, herbal, and spicy. To end our dining experience, the owner told us we had to leave because he needed to give our table to another party. We weren't asked if he could bring us anything else in the way of food or drinks, we weren't offered seats at the bar, just told that we needed to go so they could turn the table. I get the whole concept of needing to turn tables, but you don't straight up tell your customers to leave. Kind of left me a bit sour.

If you like a dive style bar with messy haphazardly plated huge portions with over sized drinks and deep rich flavors you'll crave every morning then you'll be happy here. Prepare for a wait to be seated at brunch time and trust... The wait is worth it.

You just gotta love Millie's! The ultimate cure for hangovers - the Evil Keevil has saved me on more than one occasion. Their messes are the best! Love, love, love this place. It is a go-to for all out-of-town guests for me.

This was my first brunch ever in Richmond. At first notice I could tell that people LOVE this place. The restaurant isn't that big to begin with and boy was it packed. While waiting in line to put our names down for seats, my girlfriend and I started asking people what they were eating and what was best - and what did we hear? The Devil's Mess and Huevos Racheros were the two big winners people touted. Seated at the bar, we were able to see the cooks at work, as egg after egg got beaten and spread for the gazillion omelets they were pushing out to the crowded place. In front of the bar seats were mini old-school jukeboxes and you could actually control the music in the place! The owner Paul had us DJ the place the entire time we were there - he seemed like a good-natured, fun to hang out with sort of chap. To start us off while we waited, we grabbed some coffee to get the day going. Being a vegetarian (and with a veg in my gf's case) we decided to go with the Veggie Mess (vegetables instead of sausage in the Devil's Mess) and the Rancheros. Both with a tasty side of potatoes. The Rancheros had a delicious hint of spice to them and the black beans were cooked through to perfection and the dollop of sour cream added a little bit of extra flavor to the whole shabang. The tortilla did end up a bit softer than I thought, but it didn't really negatively affect the dish. All in all I enjoyed Millie's and though there are many restaurants to try brunch at in Richmond, I feel like I'll end up back here again!

The food is amazing!!! I just hate waiting to get food. The cranberry and vodka was very tasty and I had two. My husband and I were excited to try this place and we were not disappointed. The waitresses were really nice and went out of their way to make sure we had a great first visit. The bathroom almost made me have a panic attack because it is in a small area in the basement. The seating inside is very limited and tightly put together. We literally felt like we were all at one table in the area we sat in. Overall, we enjoyed it.

Food is absolutely amazing. Took my wife here for the first time and she loves it. There's always a wait and it's super crowded but the drinks they give you help. The girl making the drinks however, not so nice. Made rude comments aloud about other customers and then told us to "wait" when we tried to order drinks and then slammed them down in front of us once she made them. Her name is Casey so try to avoid her. Amy, our waitress, was very very sweet and so were everyone else taking care of us. Again, amazing, homecooked flavor to the food and very fresh avocado. Will definitely be back!

Very crowded on weekends, but food is good for brunch. The only thing is the food can be a little over salted at times, but otherwise tasty with good portions.

I think "meh" pretty well sums up our overall experience here today. There was a very long wait, which is normally totally fine when my partner and I are waiting for an awesome meal. But by the time we paid up and left, we were pretty sure that we'd never be going back there for another hour wait for a sub-standard bunch. The mimosa was OK...the bloody was tasty (lots of horseradish)...it was nice to get to order those when you put your name in. But for both I was a bit surprised at the $8 price tag at the end of the meal. The quality of the drinks didn't seem to match that (mostly ice, no bloody mary garnish). Also, the menu is very limited. I think that if I can emphasize one thing for someone who's never been there, it'd be that. So, if you have your heart set on some specific, general type of breakfast food, you will very likely be disappointed. Since we had heard that those were the house specialties, I got the Castro Mess and my partner got a different Mess. But unfortunately, they really are just piles of random things haphazardly thrown on a plate. My Castro ended up being a gloppy brown mush of dubiously flavored and textured bits, with burned potatoes on the side. The minuscule dollop of pico may have saved things a bit had there been more than a teaspoon of it present. The other mess (Spicy Mess? I can't remember) was okay...but was also just a formless glop of things mixed together, with little in the way of good textures or tastes. The coffee was actually really good; it was kind of the shining star of the morning, actually. But unfortunately, when we first got to the table what we were left with was a warm, half finished pitcher of cream that I'm pretty sure had been left by the previous table. I mean, I'm sure that more restaurants than I'd like to think about are re-use things like creamer and bread baskets from diner to diner (though, eeww)...but maybe take it away when you buss the table, throw it in the fridge for a bit, and let's just pretend that it's my own special creamer that hasn't had a chance to have a germ-y six year old's finger twirling around in it. And finally, to add to the eeww factor, there was absolutely no way to get soap to wash your hands in the restroom. Is anyone washing their hands there? I was deeply troubled by that...not to mention totally skeezed out by the big fat toenail clipping that was chilling on the table when we sat down. Yup. My two words to sum up my brunch experience at this place...meh and eeww. Final note- the wait staff was nice and decently attentive, despite being super busy. It's really too bad about the rest of our experience.

Hole in the wall= foodies dream. Food was well seasoned and very filling. It was super crowded, but despite the small building we only waited about 15 minutes. There were two of us and we tried the Cajun Mess and Devil Mess. Both come with potatoes and you can also ask for toast. I'm not a big egg eater and the Cajun Mess was perfect for me with the other Ingredients of sausage, crawfish and bell peppers. No need to add salt or pepper to your food. This place gets 3 stars simply because the other person in my party discovered a piece of egg shell in their food. Also the mimosas are little pricey compared to other places ($8 vs $4/5), but they are served in larger glasses instead of champagne flutes.

I had heard about the brunch here for a while but still haven't made it yet. I recently had dinner with some friends on a rainy night though so I finally get to review. Millie's is a small little place and definitely not a "diner" feel. Sure it technically has a counter and booths but the booths are wooden and it's definitely more upscale feeling. The space is split between two rooms and their cute bathroom is definitely not handicap friendly because it's down a set of stairs. How do you mix divey with upscale? Ask Millie's. The service is friendly from the chef to the hostess to the server who considered me a regular, so I must have a Doppelganger. Their wine list is large for a "diner" and has bottles as cheap as low $30s up to expensive. We started with an easy Cotes du Rhone which was light, lovely and low sulfates (read: no hangover) and their clams appetizer. The clams were delicious with sweet garlic and parsley in wine sauce. Our only complaint is the serving size for $12 because there were only 8 clams. The crusty bread was perfect with it. The chicken and cauliflower soup was OK, not great. My friend also had a salad with manchego cheese and pear which was absolutely gorgeous. Their dinner menu changes regularly with the exception of one dish that remains over the years - the Thai Spicy Shrimp Pasta. It doesn't sound spectacular- after all, what is the point of getting that when you can get pad thai or other noodle dishes in a real Thai restaurant? Mais non - you MUST try this at some point. The peanuttiness gives the dish some heft, the cabbage in it gives a satisfying crunch, the shrimp are perfectly cooked and sweet. The spiciness doesn't send you into overload but gives a little excitement. A home run indeed. Another friend had a NY Strip with yukons which was well seasoned, but it wasn't a filet. She had dish envy of my Thai shrimp. We finished the night with a seasonal profiteroles with pumpkin gelato which were lovely. I will definitely return.

I've walked and drove past Millie's Diner numerous times. It's always a line outside the door especially on weekends. Since I live in the downtown area, I decided to walk over for lunch during the week because parking can be a hassle. Millie's began to get very busy after we were seated. The restaurant was busy for a weekday but not as busy as brunch on weekends. The menu items are written on a blackboard. Millie's specials of the day are placed at each table and the bar. I ordered the Cajun mess (scrambled eggs, spicy andouille sausage, crawfish, tomatoes, onions, and cheese) and a marinated flank steak sandwich. Most meals are served with house potatoes. My Cajun mess was good. The ingredients blended well together with some spiciness. The marinated flank steak sandwich was delicious. The steak was grilled and seasoned very well. I'm definitely a fan of the flank steak sandwich (my favorite). Millie's house potatoes are tasty. The dessert choices are limited. I chose the khalua pound cake over chocolate espresso cake. I'm glad I chose the khalua pond cake with salted caramel gelato. The pound cake and gelato was delicious!!! I wanted to take a pint of the salted caramel gelato home with me. Service was average. The employees were friendly. Arriving early is vital if you don't want to wait for a long time to be seated. Millie's Diner is a good choice for lunch in Downtown Richmond.

I did my research, I was expecting a wait. There definitely was one - maybe 40 minutes. Luckily, it was a beautiful sunny morning and I was able to drink my bloody mary in the sunshine while I reminded the boyfriend that an extra 40 minutes with me should be the perk of waiting to be seated. Walking in to put my name on the list seemed to be a little unorganized. I gray haired man (the owner I presume) was running around seating people so I had a bit of a wait to put my name on the list. Either I was waiting then, or I was waiting after - it didn't really matter to me. Besides, getting those tables flipped should be getting me seated sooner. While I'm waiting in front of the tiny fully exposed kitchen a few eggs drop ALMOST on top of me. Everyone was nice and apologized. No use crying over spilled eggs. I get my name in, am asked what I'd like to drink and proceed outside. Once we're seated (at the bar), we were greeted by the regular who told us all about the menu. We decided on the Devil's Mess and the Salmon with Poached Eggs. Both were delicious! I can't wait to go back and try out the rest of the menu.

Brunch brunch brunch. I had heard amazing things about Millie's brunch, so had to confirm in person whilst in Richmond. First the menu is amazingly diverse (unless you want waffles. no waffles). Be prepared for long lines and a bit of wait for the food. The kitchen is the size of my closet and has two very hard working gentlemen that make ALL of the food for the entire packed place. They had 10-12 things on the menu, from burgers to trash plates, and all of them sounded amazing. I had the General Lee; two jalapeno cheddar biscuits topped with country ham, poached eggs and completed with sausage gravy. I had exactly half and felt full for the better part or 10 hours that day. It was incredibly salty, the country ham is no joke. Otherwise it was delicious and would be the perfect meal to soak up residual PBRs from a long Saturday night. My husband got Castro's mess, with cuban pork, beans, and a bunch of other things mixed in with eggs. That was delicious. Seriously yummy, I'm getting that one next time we are there.

The food was sub par and hardly deserving of the near $30 per entree charged. The lamb was so tough that our table made a running joke about how it was uncuttable. The NY strip was super fatty and, at medium rare, seemed as chewy as a well done filet. Our server was great, with exception of running our card for the wrong table. Frankly - I could not be paid to give this place another shot. Epic fail.

The portions at Millie's are incredible. The service was excellent, although, if you go on a Saturday or Sunday morning expect to wait about an hour to be seated. The hardest part of the experience was deciding what to eat because it all looked so good.

In a Nutshell: Best Food, Worst Service. Let's just start from the beginning shall we. I've never been to Millie's before. I was late to a brunch party celebrating the engagement of one of my best friends and his fiance. I didn't think it was a big deal, it was supposed to be a casual experience... you know BRUNCH. Anyways, they wouldn't take any of the orders for my table until I got there. Why? Because that's just how they do things. So, after showing up 20 minutes late, they finally serve the whole party. The menu is up on a blackboard. I ordered the shrimp and grits. That was the only time I talked to our server until we asked for the check. Food was brought by another server. The food was great. I really enjoyed it and would've loved to go back, but the service staff and (presumably) the owner, ruined it. After asking for the check, the server brought us back the full sum of the table and told us tip was included for a table of our size (no problem). Then she told us we had to do the math ourselves and split up the check at the table. Uh, why? Because that's just how they do things. With a raised eyebrow, my best friend did just that. Our table was becoming visibly upset. To which the wait staff immediately became defensive. An elderly looking man came into the room and stood about 10 feet away watching us the whole time we split the check. Upon realizing that one of the prices was wrong on the ticket compared to black board menu, I pointed it out to the waitress. She copped an attitude and immediately got some chalk and changed the price. She did it right in front of us. It was not a very welcoming experience. Millie's made our dining experience about them when it was supposed to be celebration of an engagement. So, instead of a fond memory of the food and friends, I'm left with a sour taste. I've never written a review about a restaurant before. Thanks Millie's.

It's so sad to see all the bad reviews for this place! My advice: give it another try. For starters, get there EARLY. This place fills up and people love to sit and drink their wayyyy tooo delicious bloody mary's and mimosas. When you do finally sit down, be ready to order - they move quick. Their portion sizes are huge so if you're hungover or hungry you're in the right place! Omelets are some of the best in RVA. Many people says omelets are easy and everyone has them but NO ONE does them like Millie's does. If you live in RVA and you haven't been here, shame.on.you!!!

The devil's mess is pretty awesome. We came here on a sleepy weekday afternoon for lunch. We were a bit early so the crowd hadn't come in yet (it did later fill up pretty nicely). The spicy sausage, melted cheese, and perfectly cooked egg really made the dish. I also had some spinach salad with salmon. The salmon was perfectly cooked and seasoned. It was delicious. I like seeing that the food is prepared fresh and everything was seasoned nicely and was very tasty. The waitress was also extremely friendly. Definitely try this place out.

Our first time and for there around 9:15 for Sunday brunch. Not a long wait (no reservations accepted) for a party of 9 - had we been any later the wait would have been incredible. Food was great and there was a good variety. However, if you have a diet restrictions or have a picky eater in your party may not be a place for you. No substitutions is a strict policy.

Brunch time Alcohol, delicious food, great service, friendly owner AND awesome juke boxes that will have you groovin to JAMES BROWN? What more could you want?? 4.5!!! :D I was excited to try this place out because I had heard so many good things about it. It's located in downtown Richmond, so of course parking is street parking, but we lucked out and got VIP street parking right in front of the restaurant. I was liking it already! This place is BUSY and pretty small. The servers, owner, and cooks are constantly on the move and there always seems to be a handful of people waiting both inside and outside of the restaurant (come after 1:30PM if you don't want too much of a wait). We were greeted by the nice owner with the cutest british accent, and waited about 25 minutes for a seat that ended up being at the bar. we were completely fine with that though because we were starving. We ended up sitting next to one of the regulars and chatted up a storm. He recommended the devil's mess and soft scrambled eggs with lobster (which I'll try next time). Now for the most important part, THE FOOD. Oh the food. The food is delicious. Brunch comes with complimentary toast and butter with a plethora of delicious marmalades (orange, blackberry, strawberry). My sister and I ordered the Devil's Mess and the Cajun Mess, both of which were served with a side of home fries. (Each $12) DEVIL'S MESS: YUM. so delicious, it's described as: an "Open-faced omelet of spicy sausage, onions, green peppers, garlic, tomatoes and mild curry, finished with melted white cheddar and avocado" The eggs were fluffy and the cheese was melty, just the way I like my omelette. CAJUN MESS: EVEN BETTER than the Devil's mess! I really enjoyed this dish and was jealous that my sister had ordered the better dish this time. It's described as: "3 eggs scrambled with spicy Andouille sausage, crawfish meat, tomatoes, onions, peppers, corn & cheddar" The crawfish meat was juicy and succulent, and the omelette excellent and flavorful. The home fries are top notch, and are served with delicious sauteed onions. They also seemed to be sprinkled with what tasted like old bay seasoning. I highly recommend this place, but don't come in a large group. Anything more than a party of 4 is a crowd for this restaurant. However, It is quite the experience that you won't get anywhere else.

Not the best brunch in Richmond. The food is okay, not phenomenal. Due to the high volume of patrons and a small kitchen, the quality of the food is not what it could be. I had the Egg Benny when I visited. Woah...TOO much salt. Blech. I couldn't finish it, unfortunately. Next time I'd like to try the Devil's Mess. I am giving this place the benefit of the doubt because I went on a Saturday morning when it was packed. The waitstaff was not very attentive; this is very typical of Richmond restaurants. If you are trying to go for brunch, a wait is inevitable. I give it three stars for now...hopefully I can change that and hop on the Millie's train on my next visit.

What can I possibly say that hasn't already been covered? Husband and I dared to try this place around 10:00 on a cold and blustery Sunday morning. Needless to say, it was absolutely mobbed and everyone was smashed inside to get out of the cold. After so many great reviiews (and my husband's favorable memory of the place), though, we couldn't pass up the opportunity, so we waited. We finally got seated at the bar which was excellent as we got a chance to interact with the owner and staff quite a lot which was awesome. The owner (I'm assuming that's who it is) is fantastic - friendly, cool-headed, and obviously enjoys seeing so many happy people in his place (and not just because they're clearly raking in the cash). My Bloody Mary was good (not great) - a little heavy handed on the Worchestshire sauce for me giving it a bit of a strong fishy taste, but I am SUPER picky about my Bloody Marys. Others would probably find them just fine. Husband liked his mimosa which they make with just a splash of OJ for color (trust me, I know, I watched them pour lots of them). But the food -- OH the food! I have been looking for good, house-made corned beef since we moved back to VA 1.5 years ago and finally (!) I found it. Though I was very tempted by the chrorizo pupusa dish, husband urged me to go for the corned beef and the waitress agreed and I am SO happy they did. It was superb. Too often, IMO, places trim all the fat off corned beef leaving it dry; this had nice fatty bits that gave it that melt-in-your-mouth texture, while also having some crunchy bits in it as well. Eggs were cooked perfectly, giving a nice runny yolk-sauce to the whole dish. I contemplated licking the plate, as the owner encouraged me to do, but managed to sop up every bit of goodness with toast. Husband got both the vegetarian mess AND the grilled eggplant and brie sandwich, both of which were divine. This place makes me wish I lived in Richmond!! I can't wait to come back and try something more... perhaps dinner...

Finally made it to Millie's with my husband, and we were not disappointed! All the food coming out of the kitchen looked so Delicious, it was difficult making a decision. My husband ordered the Cajun Mess and loved every bite! I ordered the Chipotle chicken sandwich. The chicken was tasty and cooked perfectly! The potatoes on the side were to die for! Staff was happy and friendly. They have a great selection of wines and offer a handful of craft beers! Love this cozy spot and can't wait to go back to have their corn beef brisket hash with poached and hollandaise !

On a road trip down south I made my way over to millies thanks to recommendations from fellow yelpers. I was here just before noon on a Friday and we seemed to beat the lunchtime crowd (so I can't speak to any waiting as other reviews have mentioned). I ordered a grilled salmon salad off the board. It was seasoned and cooked to perfection and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would certainly come back again (if I were in the area).

Outstanding. Menu is super unique and does not disappoint. Place is jam packed every weekend but the staff is amazing. Get you settled with coffee, a bloody or mimosas while you wait. The portions are huge. The venue has great character. In my opinions it is RVA's best brunch without doubt.

3.5 stars: This was my second time at Millie's - opt for brunch here over dinner! In my opinion, dinner was overpriced for some run-of-the-mill food. Bloody Mary: Unfortunately watery. Soft scrambled eggs with lobster, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, puff pastry & hollandaise: Delicious. I loved the addition of the flaky puff pastry and large chunks of lobster meat. My only complaint is that I found numerous pieces of shell. Grilled flank steak with poached eggs, asparagus, and hollandaise: The steak was juicy and flavorful, but you can't specify how you want yours cooked. Our waitress said they grill the entire flank and cut and reheat it as orders come in. Dutch pancake: Cheesy. A bite was good enough for me, but not sure I could've stomached the whole thing. Devil's mess: Yum! Good brunch spot, but get ready for a long wait!

Maybe it's because we used to go to Millies almost every weekend when we lived in RVA. After a year away we visited again last weekend. Really our only gripe is the bar. The food is still great, though portions got a little smaller and sides like bread disappeared, although you can ask for them for no charge. Not to disappoint they were still pushing Bloody Marys and Mimosas which we gladly received. Since the drinks usually equal or exceed the cost of the food items in any restaurant it is really critical that quality and alcohol are present. They always have been. But last weekend we tried a Bloody Mary, a greyhound, and even a shot of vodka to add to the Bloody. I can tell you without any reservations that we were not getting a full shot in the aforementioned drinks and not anywhere near what was in them in the past. If you're into virgin bloody marys for $8 then you'll be fine but we should have at least have had a buzz after spending $90 on breakfast for two! We'll go back but just skip the drinks.

It was a Sunday that I visited Millie's and I heard that this place was the bomb when it came to brunch food and I love brunch. Unfortunately... I had their poached eggs and it was just so overly salty that I felt like I was going to shrink into a prune inside out. I would have to say their mimosas were pretty good but as it comes for food... I will have to come back and try something else.

This place has delicious breakfast food! But there is always a line to get a table. Their lobster omelet is divine! Make sure to arrive early and with everyone in your party or else you have to wait longer

I hadn't been to Millie's in years! Nothing has changed and this is a good thing. The food is still delicious (I love the lobster eggs with puff pastry and hollandaise sauce for brunch), it is still crazy busy, and the staff is still super friendly and upbeat. A must visit for any out of towners.

This was my first time having brunch on a Saturday! I guess you could technically have a breakfast+lunch brunch any day of the week, but I've never gone for brunch at a restaurant on any day other than Sunday. My friend and I arrived at 9:50AM, so we were one of the first to be seated when the restaurant opened at 10AM. No waiting necessary for us! =) I tried the Dutch Pancake, which as our waitress described was more similar to a savory crepe, but with all of the toppings mixed-in. (It reminded me of the seafood pancakes of Korean cuisine.) My dining companion ordered the Veggie Mess. My dish was amazing! It was oddly soft on one side and crispy on the other half (perhaps the pan/grill was not heated evenly?), but tasty nonetheless. My plate also came with some seasoned potatoes. If you want to add some heat, there is Sriracha sauce on the table. (SIDENOTE: Why is Sriracha EVERYWHERE in Richmond?! I'm definitely not used to seeing it outside of Asian establishments, lol.) The restaurant itself was warm and cozy, although I was having an in-depth conversation with my friend during the meal, so I didn't really spend much time looking around and taking in the sights. It also got progressively more crowded during my meal, with people standing in the aisles and walkways right by our booth to avoid waiting out in the cold. Our server was super friendly; she was also very tall! I also remember the water tasting very good for some reason. I didn't really feel full enough after finishing my pancake, but since my friend was paying for my meal, I didn't want to order any more food. Fortunately, our waitress asked if we wanted any complimentary toast, and I said yes, so she brought a basket with two slices of toast, some butter, and preserves.(The bread was whole grain, which pleased me, since I'm not a fan of white bread.) Two slices of bread spread with scrumptious blackberry preserves really hit the spot! Unfortunately, I accidentally left my scarf and beanie at the booth, and when I called the restaurant from home to ask if they had seen it, they said they were too busy to check for me now, and to call back between 2:30-3:00PM. Since I didn't want to wait three hours, I just stopped by Millie's on my way out for grocery shopping around noon, and was relieved to find my missing items placed atop a coat rack. After all, I still have the rest of winter to get through, and as a weather-spoiled Californian, I really need my cold-weather gear!

Hate to bore you with yet another five-star review, but yes, it's that good. First let me say that I have lived in Richmond for many years but that this was my first visit to this long top-rated restaurant. And my first impression was one of surprise. I've seen some reviews and heard talk of the place, but for some reason, I did not realize how small and intimate it is. I love the fact that it is softly lit and cozy and that much of the food was prepared in a small kitchen within sound and smell-distance of our table. We sat in a wooden booth and were served by a friendly, unpretentious waitress who made us feel very much at home (and who dropped us a few quarters to play the tabletop jukebox). The food, was what we expected--superb. I had the pan seared rockfish and my wife had quail. Both entrees and the accompanying side dishes were all perfectly cooked (if you agree that great cooking means great tasting) and well presented. We were so impressed that we even stayed for coffee and desert to savor the experience (never). The best restaurants, to me, offer something out of the ordinary. The fact that Millie's Diner wasn't what I expected is the very thing that makes it so special.

I went there for Sunday brunch with my fiancee and planned on meeting two others there. I heard a lot about this place and was excited to try it out. We got there about 10 minutes before they opened and were surprised to see a very long line waiting outside the door. Needless to say I was excited since only a place that is really something special would receive this. As they opened the line started moving as the wait staff started placing parties to the open tables. Our friends were finding parking in the sparse street parking outside as we spoke with the hostess about being seated only to find out they cant seat us until the entire party arrives. I understand many restaurants have this policy and we would been OK with it if the place wasn't so busy. In my opinion it felt like even though we waited 10 minutes before they opened they should have appreciated our interest and dedication to their establishment and just seated us. We got lucky there wasn't another party of four behind us to take the table that we eventually got seated at as our friends arrived a only minute later. The chefs cranked out food fast with how busy it was. I would definitely say if you need something fast (if there is no line/wait) but don't want fast food this is a good place to go. I was however disappointed with the quality. It wasn't bad necessarily but it wasn't great enough to warrant the hype and long wait for this place when there are many other options in the bottom that I enjoy much more. The brunch menu was not on a handheld menu but a chalkboard that was rather hard to read if you are not standing in front of it. The menu had the usual american breakfast options and some decent variation and unique items but nothing to write home about. I had the steak and eggs. The dish was good but the steak was overcooked and tough. There's nothing good about paying for steak when it arrives overcooked. I should have realized the waitress never asked me how I wanted it cooked. I suppose that could be on me for not telling her how I wanted it but ultimately that's her job as a waitress to ask as well. My fiancee got the castros mess and eventually realized after eating most of it (we got lost in conversation with our friends before realizing) there was no pork or tortilla strips in the dish at all. One of our friends got the same thing and her dish was missing the same ingredients. Overall the speed was quick, food was affordable and hot, and the menu was better than an average cheap diner. The place is on the smaller side and if you have a large group of more than 6, from what I could see, you would have a hard time getting a table. I just don't see the quality or menu being good enough to warrant the hype. If you enjoy brunch classics with some slight variation and don't need anything fancy or special, nor expect it to be either, this place is a good place to go.

The food is great and employees from the chef to the busboy will do their best to see to it you have a great experience. The only thing I'd change ( if possible) is the size of the dining area...I wish it were larger.

Nobody goes to Millie's for Sunday brunch - it's too crowded! Friendly atmosphere, fantastic service, and the food quality, taste - and quantity can't be beat. We always bring our out of town guests here. If you haven't experienced dinner here, you've denied yourself a real treat!

Waiting to be seated was such a traumatic experience that it over shadowed the food. The place is tiny and the waiting area is right next to the "kitchen". So you come in hungry for brunch and then wait an hour while watching a very real and in your face cooking show. CRUEL!!! It's a local hotspot and a must-try-at least-once if breakfast, brunch, or eggs are your thing. Millie's is known for their "Messes," which are basically scrambled eggs with a bunch of stuff thrown in. Very inventive menu.

What can I say? I lucked out (or in?) by living so close to this place. I take my friends who come from out of town to this place. They enjoy the decor, and of course the food. To start, their selection of breads at the beginning are great (your cornbread is good, and I'm a cornbread enthusiast.) I recently had their lamb with pureed white beans and balsamic vinegar. The concept was awesome, with a presentation that I did not expect (in a good way). If you can get there a little early (especially on weekends), it's easy to get a table real quick. I plan on continuing to bring friends over to this establishment again soon!

I like Millie's. It's got a nice laid back atmosphere. I'd frequent the restaurant if it was closer to where I lived. First and foremost, the food is great! I like how you can see the kitchen because it's literally right next to you - no walls, no secret ingredients that you were not aware of. I got the Devil's Mess because I just can't say no to avocado. I must warn you though, if you're not into oriental curry flavor, you should not get this one. It's got a distinctive flavor. My potato was slightly burned. It always irks me a little when my friend's dish has perfectly done potatoes while mine is burnt. But that's not the point. I also tried a little bit of my friend's Cajun Mess. This would've been my second choice. I don't regret my own entree but I would've been happy with hers too. Cajun Mess has more volume. You get a little bit of crawfish and New Orleans on your brunch platter. It's definitely got that southern kick. All in all, I'm happy with my experience here. Next time, I would like to sit at the other room, away from the kitchen though. Seems like the difference of a night and day between the two dining rooms, and I need my Vitamin D.

Flavors are bold - but a little heavy handed. Had the shrimp and grits w/chorizo - Way more chorizo than shrimp (5). Would come back - but would stay with the traditional breakfast items.

We liked this place. We decided to stop for dinner on our road trip and yelped it out. I ordered the risotto with pecorino cheese and radicchio I found the radicchio a little bitter but the risotto very good. My husband had the Thai shrimp and liked it a lot. The area was safe to park. They need more beer choices. Atmosphere was cool. They sat us by the bar. The inside room looked a little more comfy. Sat In church pew benches. I would recommend this place to a friend.

Millie's is a double experience. The drinks and the food. Expect to wait, because it's worth it. (See: Portlandia "Brunch Village") Drinks first. Opt for...Spicy Bloody Mary w/olives or the Evil K (rum punch) Eat next. Opt for...it doesn't matter. It's all amazing. The sausage in the Devil's Mess adds a sweetness to the savoriness of the dish; the Veggie Mess carries the curry flavor with a strong smokiness in the veggies from the grill...you can't make a wrong decision.

The food was worth every minute of the wait. I had the soft-scrambled eggs with lobster and puff pastry and practically licked the plate. The service left a little bit to be desired... I understand if you don't make changes to anything on the menu but there are ways to say it and ways not to say it. Also, it was so crowded that for a while we were seated at a table and people were standing right next to us. A little too cozy. I'd go back for the food anyday. But maybe not on a Sunday when it's so crowded.

With the popularity of this place, I had to try it for brunch. The food is worth a try but the rave that this place gets is surprising to me. They serve their scrambled eggs on the runnier side which I enjoyed but their home fries were mushy and overcooked. Nothing really blew me away but I happily ate my dish. Their dishes are pricey for brunch but they do give generous portions that should fill up the hungriest of guests. I think that the draw to Millie's is more about the experience than anything. It's a quirky little restaurant with all sorts different nooks to cram the diners in. It gets really busy and the hustle and bustle makes for a fun atmosphere. In the end, the long wait and slow service were expected, but I was anticipating more from the food. Food: 3 Value: 3 Service: 3 Overall: 3

Millie's is easy to find...just follow the scent of roasted potatoes and onions down the cute neighborhood street! Millie's was hoppin' around brunch time and there was a line out the door when we arrived at 1:00 ish. The good news is that the line moves at a reasonable pace and most people went inside to grab a mimosa or bloody mary to help pass the time. My friends and I followed suit and ordered a bloody mary, mimosa and jack & coke and easily found a 4 person table outside where we could relax until they called our name. There are only 4 outside tables available but they rotate out rather quickly. The bloody mary made me quite toasty and after I finally mentioned it to my friends, they informed me that indeed the bartender had poured approx 1/2 cup of vodka in it - it did the trick! My friend's shirley temple was alright. They skimped on the cherries and it was her bday so ya know, they could have whipped out a few more! Drinks were $8 a piece. Once our name was called we were escorted to a booth by the bar area. There is not a lot of seating and the venue is quite small and loud. There are no menus. You instead order from a blackboard hanging on the wall. Their fare consists primarily of egg dishes. As a vegetarian there were a few options available for me - a BLT (I do eat bacon on occasion), a black bean and cheese burrito and there was one other option that I cannot remember. Both of my tablemates had the fried egg with sausage. They liked the egg but not the sausage. The BLT was tasty since the bacon was super thin and crispy. We all tried the potatoes and that was definitely the best part - a must order! Service was okay. They are pretty busy so I am sure it's tough to keep up but they could have stayed on top of the water a little more. Parking was pretty easy - 1hr to 2hr spots available but with the wait times, you might be pushing it. The bathrooms are located downstairs with an interesting setup, each bathroom (male and female) have a toilet inside, but a communal sink is outside. Be careful of the steep stairs. Worth a trip if you are in the area. A weekday might be better.

The best part of my trip to DC metro area. In fact I don't mind driving two hours from NC just for their brunch mess dishes. In Millie's, I got pipping hot coffee always filled to the brim. I mean the whole time I was there. The hash browns are charred perfectly on the skin, which is so hard to find in...let's face it, most of the restaurants. The mess is like deconstructed omelet and 1000 times more flavorful. Food is cooked, then sent to you no later than 20s. Now that is what real food should be served.

Its a local spot that I just love. My wife and I did date night there and both had fantastic dinners. My wife ordered the beef shoulder (cajun spiced) that was topped with watermelon salsa (with feta crumbles) on top their signature mash potatoes. She ordered the beef shoulder medium rare and the meal came out just as ordered. The meal in her opinion (and mine because I kept stealing bites) was just extremely well executed. We in fact couldn't think of a way to make it better. I ordered the bouillabaisse. The featured fish in the bouillabaisse was red snapper. From a presentation perspective the meal was beautiful. 3 pieces of three point toast, abundant broth, mussels, shrimp and chunks of white fish. I have never ordered this before but, it was very very good. In fact, its something I would recommend. I wanted it spicy so I threw in a healthy amount of Siracha to help. Overall, great date night meal!

It might as well be a Richmond landmark. Millie's represents the local food movement before it was a movement. Edgy. Local. Walk in and see the exposed kitchen next to the door. The menu is on the chalkboard behind the bar. And daily specials lay on each table. The food has a Latin flare, and being a diner tends to lean more on breakfast items. Whatever meal you plan to eat, plan to arrive early because there will likely be a line. But it's worth the wait.

We are traveling to DC and I yelped restaurants in Richmond. We like farm to table and tasty food. I was not able to make reservations at a couple other trendy restaurants. I found this place and so glad we did. The food is delicious. It was not crowded for a Friday night. I don't understand why. It was so good. I had the pan-roasted duck breast with nasturtium chimichurri, sweet potato, and grilled bok choy. My husband and son had the swordfish with pineapple salsa, saffron rice, and zucchini chips. We also had a side order of pickled okra. We will definitely be back. I am glad we found this place. I give it a A plus.

Yesterday I had one of the best breakfasts of my life at Millie's. Corned beef is one of my favorite things to eat, and usually when it comes to corned beef hash it's usually prepared as a salty, mushy, inedible affront to humanity. Millie's Corned beef hash breakfast, however, is manna from heaven and has tremendous flavor (some may think spicy, but I wouldn't say so). The eggs were perfectly poached, the peppers delightfully roasted, the massive chunks of corned beef are to die for. The other members of my party got the Eggs Ben-Gruben, a twist on the Eggs benny with salmon. I had a bite and it was also really tasty. I didn't get a drink other than coffee, but my husband got the Rum Punch and it was a great breakfast drink, not too strong or sweet, but enough to start your morning right. Aside from the impeccable meal, the waitstaff was extremely friendly and even though there was a huge wait for the table (at least 10 groups ahead of us when we arrived at 10:15am) we were given coffee and were seated within 30 minutes. All-in-all a fantastic experience!

OMG!! The best brunch I've ever had in my life!! I'm from New York but I lived in Richmond for a year and a half and this is the most memorable thing about Richmond!! I only get one dish whenever I go to Millie's. Devils Mess no bend no curve!! My fiancée whose also from NY would agree with me that this is the best brunch she's ever had as well. Believe me we eat out all over NYC and we still haven't come across a dish like this for brunch. Paul the owner is awesome!! He always takes good care of me whenever i drop by. Love this spot and the next time I'm around that area I will definitely make it a priority to stop by. Cheers mate.

For Sunday brunch be prepared to wait for a minimum of 30 minutes. The Mimosas are very delicious and strong and are served to you while you wait. I had the Ben Gurion which was very good, but my pouched egg was a little too over cooked. Very generous size though and very filling.

Customer service is not necessarily their strong point. While everyone is friendly enough, there just didn't seem to be a strong onus on pleasing the customer and moving people around efficiently. It was more hey you're here like we expect you to be so we'll give you food for money but won't break our necks to make your visit as pleasant as possible. Place is extremely popular especially on a Sunday morning so be prepared to wait and wait a long time. They do let you order drinks while you wait but that only gets you so far when 20 people are all cramped into an outdoor patio area. For their lack of space and hospitality, they do offer good food. I had the corned beef brisket has which comes with poached eggs and it was great. Corned beef was well prepared and moist, eggs were cooked beautifully and the overall flavor profile was fantastic, Food is definitely not the problem here. As this is a Richmond staple, this place is worth a visit but be prepared to wait and wait and also service without the hospitality you might expect from the south.

Oh, my! That was the best brunch I've had in a long time! I ordered the special, steak and cheese papusas. The pillowy corn pockets were filed with steak and cheese. Some crunchy pickled cabbage and sour cream topped it. Along with some deliciously seasoned home fries! My only negative (which doesn't affect my rating) is that it is very loud. It would be nice if you could eat at the outdoor tables.

I hate to write bad reviews! But after eating dinner here last night, I felt the need to share. My dad and I went here for a Father's Day celebration of such. He's been here many times growing up and I've been there once before. When we walked in around 7:30, it was pretty calm; we were seated right away without a reservation--sweet! Unlucky for us, we were pretty close to the stove. We commented to the two chefs right before we sat down--"how do you stand that heat??" It just seems cruel! That being said, pretty soon we were enduring some of that same heat--and continued during our long meal. Also--the bar chairs squeak like nothing else. Like nails on a chalkboard. We received drinks fast--many thanks! And the cornbread and warm bread and soft butter were really yummy. Then, we ordered and received our appie pretty quickly (the peppers--they were ok) and waited. And waited some more. Our server did come by a few times and assured us it would be "just a few more minutes." We received our food at 9. It was incredible how long it took, especially with barely anyone there! Unfortunately, the food was terrible. My dish had some sort of mustard sauce that was way too strong and buttery and salty. I knew even looking at my Dad's that he was experiencing the same kind of thing. His pasta was doused in butter and cheese. After the 100$+ check, I think No Millie's. Side note: My boyfriend and I called Mille's a few weeks ago to inquire if we were able to make reservations for brunch (I was pretty sure that they did not, but nonetheless, a girl is gonna do what she wants to do). Instead of politely informing us no, or assist in any way, the person inquired if we even "lived around here" and scoffed when we said that we did--because apparently everyone knows that they do not do reservations for brunch. He then continued: Millie's is a "staple in Richmond. Everyone comes here." Well, you can leave me out, Millie's.

My first time at Millie's and at a brunch restaurant - and it was definitely an eye opener with my 3 sisters! Food: We ordered the Devil's Mess, Cajun Mess, Huevos Rancheros, and Turkey Sandwich! And my favorite has to be the Huevos Rancheros, hands down! All the dishes were very favorable and was pretty unique to the restaurant in my mind (maybe because I've never had legit brunch before). The turkey sandwich was definitely a surprise to me, I didn't know it came with so many ingredients in the burger - definitely worth the try. Price: The prices were alright. But the portions definitely made up for the price. We ordered 4 plates and had leftovers for every single plate even though we did family style and ate off of each other's plate, to taste the variety. Service: We definitely came in at the right time. There was no wait and our waitress was pretty on point with everything. Since it was my first time here, I had a lot of questions about their dishes because the dishes' names can be a little vague. And let me tell you, the waitress knew the menu and helped us tremendously when we asked what was in the dishes we were interested in. I will definitely be returning to try something different and possibly bring a friend that is from out of town to try this place also!

Once in a while, there comes that one restaurant you just gotta ALWAYS order the first meal you've tried there. Why? Because it was THAT darn good. 2 words for you brunchers: Cajun's Mess. Brunch is absolutely delicious here. Homemade, hearty, and no frills. Cajun Mess: this is the only entree I've ordered here (note: I've tried my friends' other dishes; none were up-to-par). Why fix something that ain't broken? This meal will have my heart at Millie's, always & forever. Tip: Come at 10am on a Saturday morning, and there will be a line outside, but you will get a seat of you aren't too far off their front sidewalk. ;)

Came here for a late brunch on a Saturday afternoon around 2pm - there was no wait! We started with drinks - mimosa, bloody mary, and the evil keevil rum punch. They were refreshing, but could've been stronger. For food, I got the veggie mess, which is an open face curry-spiced omelette with mushrooms, peppers, and onions topped with melted white cheddar and avocado. No substitutions on the messes, which was a bit annoying. I was kind of disappointed with the food - it came swimming in grease and lacked more interesting veggies, but overall it still tasted good. The homestyle potatoes were much better! My friends got the huevo rancheros and Castro's mess, and enjoyed their food. Portions are big here! Come hungry!

We loved this place. Although very hipster, food was great. Best potatoes I've had. I didn't go inside, cause we sat outside. Service , quick and friendly. My only issue is that, they have everything prefixed and mixed, so u can not omit or add anything to your meal. So for all the picky eaters be aware. The entire party demolished their food, and enjoyed it very much. It's near downtown, street parking only so I can imagine weekends are crazy. I'd def go back.

I was told this was the place for brunch in Richmond, and after experiencing it, I'm going to have to agree. Like other reivewers, there are some downsides here. Service is pretty aloof, there was a significant wait, the place is tiny with nowhere to actually wait inside (it was raining on the day we were there), and it's loud. Upon entering through a small vestibule, the tiny kitchen is just through the door on your right. Just past that is a small (6 seats?) bar where you can get mimosas or bloodys while you wait for your table. Service at the bar was reasonably fast considering the place was packed with people waiting. Drinks are added to a tab that is later delivered to your table, streamlining this process. That said, it was worth all the nonsense for the food. Oh, the food. I'm getting wistful thinking about it! I had Castro's Mess - pulled pork, scrambled eggs, onions, black beans, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, and crispy tortilla strips. All in a big bowl of gooey deliciousness. The brunch bowl / scramble has been done a thousand times, but it's amazing what quality ingredients and some perfectly seasoned, novel meats / proteins will do to elevate it. Against my better judgement, I ate the whole thing and was promptly incapacitated for the rest of the day, just as I should be on a Sunday. My date had the corned beef brisket hash, which rightfully sold out nearly immediately after he ordered it (it was only ~9:30 am). The smell of his dish alone was incredible enough. He, too, nearly licked his bowl clean. We were prompted to pay quickly after our meal was finished to turn the table, which was executed smoothly and we were on our way. This isn't a place to linger or have a leisurely brunch, but we didn't necessarily feel rushed either. We came, we ate, we left. Like I said, it's really all about the food, and if you come with reasonable expectations and knowledge regarding the rest of the experience, you won't be disappointed.

We went for brunch on a Saturday. There was a 20 minutes wait, it was very crowded. The server was very enthusiastic and friendly. They don't do modifications to your orders though so if you are picky or have restrictions it might be annoying. The Devil's mess was okay. The paying process was really weird. They refused to do separate checks for our table of 6, but did this weird thing where they'd let us pay one at a time, and generate a new check after each person paid.

Went around 6pm on a Tuesday. Immediately got a seat with no reservation (wouldn't have minded waiting anyway). Waiter was professional, cool and knew exactly what he was doing. Started out by asking if we'd ever dined there. Got a feel for me and my lady friend and let us have some time to check out the menu (which he briefly went over and wasn't under or overbearing about it). Got a bottle of Malbec from Mendoza and the wine service was nicely done. Bottle was right under $40 so it wasn't anything crazy, but it's still refreshing to see the style of service by your wait staff do things right, like doing a wine presentation. Liked my salad. Both of us got steaks, cooked correctly. Sides were bangin.

We stopped at Millie's Diner when we were passing through Richmond to get to Williamsburg, VA on our Memorial Day trip. I did a quick Yelp search of good brunch places in Richmond and came up with Millie's Diner, rated 4 stars overall with 300+ reviews. We were sold and somehow luckily found parking nearby and did not have to wait more than 10 minutes to get a seat at a booth. They don't really have a pre-written menu, but their food is listed up on a chalkboard. My bf and I both ordered the salmon benedict with asparagus and potatoes. It was quite tasty and a filling brunch. Service was a bit slow that day. Granted, it was quite crowded. But everyone was still friendly. What's really unique about this place are the jukeboxes at each table. We put in a couple of coins and chose some old, obscure songs. They said our songs might not play for several days if their record player was backed up. I'd like to think our songs did play while we were there. The selections were so obscure that I don't think we'd have known even if they were playing, though! :P In short, Millie's is a great brunch option if you're in Richmond, whether you live there or are just passing through.

It was my first time spending any time in Richmond and Millie's Diner was a highlight. We went for brunch on the weekend, but luckily the line was small and we were seated in short order. The host was so nice! He knew what was going on and made everyone feel welcome, even with the crazy , slightly frenetic pace of the kitchen and people around him. The food is really good! It was a bit salty for my taste, but I never use salt so I know I'm sensitive to salty food as a general rule. The potatoes were super tasty! Portions were large so come with an appetite! Service was good but the atmosphere, and watching the cooks cook completed the experience. Worth the wait!

Millie's just gets breakfast. The food comes first at this old diner, but nothing is sacrificed in atmosphere or service. The seating is built around the open kitchen, and the sensibly-plated dishes they serve up have well-balanced flavors. Try a mess, any mess. I personally love the Devil's or the Cajun mess. Servings are ample. When the weather is nice, snag a table on the porch.

In RVA, yes, this is as good as it gets. What's left to say that hasn't already been said? It's all true. The Devils mess is delicious. The swarm of hipster @$$holes waiting in line is a real pain. Parking is for shit and the prices are through the roof. But we all endure it. Everybody puts up with this $#!+ because the food is GOOD. It's really hard to find GOOD food in Richmond. There are way too many soft reviews on Yelp. But let's do the math, 300+ reviews and it still maintains a 4 star rating? That speaks volumes. I treated 2 fine ladies to brunch and dropped $100 bucks in this joint. Bring some money is the best tip I have. :D

This place is amazing! It came highly suggested online so I decided to try it. It was one of the best decisions I could have made for my morning! I had the shrimp gumbo. Once I started eating, I didn't stop until the dish was empty. The place itself has a quaint and vintage look and feel. The staff is friendly and fast. My hats off to the chef. Thanks for a great experience Millie's!

When dining at Millie's for brunch (Saturdays 10am and Sundays 9am) it is imperative that you show up early. We arrived at 8:30am on Sunday and a line had already begun to form. The place is teeny-tiny and people know it fills up fast. It was kinda cool (actually very COLD while outside in the winter) watching the chefs prep food. Thankfully we weren't too far back in the line and were able to be a part of the first wave seated at 9am when they opened. Our server Caitlin was very busy but sweet, attentive and very knowledgeable. After taking our orders she (and really the whole Millie's crew) kept our coffees and waters filled. The food took a while, but as expected with a group of 5. It gave us time to enjoy our coffee and drool over all the delicious looking plates arriving at neighboring tables. Coffee: so very good, and I'm a picky coffee drinker! I drank about 3 more cups than I normally do on a good day! I seriously contemplated purchasing a package... until I remembered I only have a Keurig now. General Lee: a housemade cheddar biscuit cut in half, topped with sausage gravy, ham and 2 poached eggs. It also comes with home fries - large chunks of potatoes fried up with onion and peppers. AMAZING, lip-smackin good, delicious, no-way-I-couldn't-eat-every-single-bite kind of good! So bring your appetite to Millie's cuz you're sure to lick your plate clean! *Tipping the chefs here is very much appreciated - and they show you so! Every time $$ is put in their bucket, the chef rings a bell and yells things like "Thank you for tipping the chef! God Bless America!!" *Seating policy - if your entire party has not arrived yet, you will not be seated. Like I said, the place is tiny and it wouldn't be fair to those waiting to be seated. *No menu changes. None. (so NO, you cannot sub bacon or whatever it is that your heart fancies but they don't already include in the meal. Bummer, but the food is still so good!) *Millie's accepts early seating reservations for parties of 6 or more.

329 other people have given the Yelp God's their thoughts and views on Millie's... I'll keep the 330th review short and sweet. Get there early - there will be a line. We got there 20 minutes before they opened and there were already people outside. The whole place filled up the second they opened the doors. It's 100% worth it. No changes to the menu! They like to keep things as they are supposed to be, I am sure this helps with the quick turn around on tables. The mimosas are $8.00 - and worth every cent, freshly squeezed OJ and a heavy handed pour of the Champagne makes it absolutely worth it. I don't know what kind of coffee they use but I would pick this over Starbucks ANYDAY! I ordered the corn beef hash and as a self proclaimed expert on corned beef I can tell you it is probably some of the best I have ever had. As much as it pains me to say this - it may be better than my own. The entire team of employees impressed my socks off. Our coffee cups were NEVER empty, the food was pure perfection and it appeared that no matter how busy they were the servers never neglected us and never led us to believe that they were "in the weeds". I really don't know if this meal with my friends could have possibly been better. I found a new love in Richmond!

Went about 9:15am got seated immediately but did get crowded quickly. Food was awesome. They know what they are doing so you can't be mad about the no changes/substitution policy. Devil mess and cajun mess were both great and different. My taste buds were very happy.

Came here last Saturday to take my BFF for brunch for her birthday. There was a very extensive wait time but the older gentleman that was taking names was very pleasant and let us enjoy a mimosa while waiting. About 35 minutes later we were seated. We ordered another round of mimosas and we both ordered the soft scrambled eggs with lobster, bacon, mushrooms and tomatoes in a puff pastry. Almost an hour later... No food. The waitress came and told us that she forgot to put in our food! I was very disappointed. She offered to buy one of our rounds of mimosas to compensate for the very major mistake. 10 minutes later our food came and it was awesome! I devoured not only because that was my first meal of the day and we waited almost 2 hours for food, but it was tasty! I would come back to this place I just hope that the young lady don't forget to put in an order, or just avoid her all together.

One word of advice when come here, bring your appetite! Holy portion sizes Batman! Arrived here early (which I also highly recommend) on a Sunday for brunch with my parents before they headed back to DC. We had about a 15 minute wait but the hostess invited us to get a drink at the bar while we waited. They have good spicy bloody Mary's here. I added a drop of Siracha to mine which might have actually pushed it a bit too far but still yummy. I had one of the specials pupusas with poached eggs, salsa and sour cream plus a side of hash browns. My mom had the salmon special and I sadly can not remember what exactly my dad had but it there was brisket in it. As I said before the portions here are huge, err I mean hearty. I am not a huge breakfast person it seems as my eyes certainly became bigger than my stomach. My parents really loved the coffee here and since they offer it for sale I'm guessing a lot of people have asked about it. The food was really good I just got full very fast and the flavors started to get too rich. The hash browns tasted like there was some curry or some kind of middle eastern spice to them. Very tasty. I do remember my mom's salmon was cooked perfectly. Would be a great place to come with a small group of 4 or less. The crab and egg enchilada sounds and looked really good from the plate that I saw served at the next table. Can't wait to come here again!

Have always enjoyed their brunch and tried their lunch out for the first time recently. Good salmon salad. I'd go here more often if there was better parking. Their brunch potatoes are my favorite in Richmond, which is reason enough to go! I like the sliced bread they put on the table, too.

All I can say is that I would love it Millie's Diner opened up shop in the DC area. Good solid creative (but not overly) fresh food, no outsize hipster pretense (a little goes a long way) and a big step up from a cheap greasy spoon where you end up paying in more than one way. Huevos Racheros and Lemon short cake were excellent. Great Service too!!

I don't know how you couldn't give this place a 5 stars. It encompasses everything that Richmond has going for them: 1) Great atmosphere. 2) Great service, great people. 3) A little quirky. 4) Amazing southern food. Literally, the Devil's Mess was the best omelette I've ever had. It's not overwhelmingly egg flavored. It comes with a side of breakfast potatoes, which were the best I've ever had. You also get a basket of toast (that's perfectly not too moist and not too crunchy) for free! Millie's Diner is a MUST if you're visiting or passing through Richmond.

Eat here for Brunch. Then it is perfection. Tried dinner here a couple of times and the food is not worth the money, IMHO. It's bland, and uninspired. HOWEVER, that being said, their brunch is worth every penny and every second you wait for it. I have had a few different menu items, but the soft scrambled eggs with lobster is my favorite. Soft scrambies (yes I meant to say scrambies) with delicious chunks of lobster on pastry topped with hollandaise and served with those awesome potatoes that you get with everything....omg. Heaven. The mimosas are decent, I just really really hate pulp in my OJ. I've had the bloodies here too and too much chewy pepper and other floaties in it for me. I do not like to chew my beverages. You used to be able to drink them on the sidewalk, but the city finally pushed the waiting drinkers under the umbrellas on the patio. If you want epic food coma go here for brunch, I just can't recommend dinner here though.

This is a coined establishment for me while living in Richmond. I drank a lot in my early twenties. I usually got shit faced at Capital Ale. Gawd, their beers are so strong. Maybe strongest in the country. Anyways, about Millies, the sobering process started here. So Saturday night was reserved for drinking. Sunday hangover was at Millies. If you are trying to sober up this is a great place to do this. I got their Bloody Mary and Devil's Mess every time. And I am not the only one who discovered this healing place so be prepared to wait. You might have already seen me when I lived in the area...skinny Asian, head tilted down wearing dark sunglasses with arms folded, sitting back on their plastic lawn chair and trying not to make eye contact with anyone because I was afraid I would puke on your face. Oh side note for the single bachelors, the VCU girls congregate here and some of them are down to chat. Anyways, I don't live in Richmond anymore but if I had my own private jet, I would fly to Richmond just to eat at Millies and fly back, on the same day. It's worth it.

we have gone to Millie's for years, used to live on church hill and walked down every Saturday morning and we have been for dinner many times...but haven't been in about year. the hassle of waiting and parking in the area has gotten much worse through the years. of course, we knew to get there early. they open at 10, ok this Saturday it was 1006 when they opened the doors. we were behind a group of 4 and two women. we were seated and had water within a minute. great, everything is going well. so, we ordered after getting our first coffee. 2 devil messes... after 2 coffees and seems like forever we noticed others that came in after us getting food orders. we asked the waitress after flagging her down and how much longer as we had been waiting for the order for 30 minutes. she said, "that is not unusual, the cooks are working hard back there" basically, she was telling us to shove it and we should be happy to be waited on and to shut up and wait. she was curt and short with her answer. she could have saved the day and gotten a better tip if she had said simply, "oh no, let me check on it". since we were sitting in front of the cook station we noticed her talking to another waitress and then I noticed our order slip on the cook station as the last one as being added. either the waitress screwed up or the cooks lost the original order. it was clear she was trying to get the cooks to rush the dm's while her back was towards us. we finished our 3rd cup of coffee and I had my water glass filled twice while waiting for my dm. we noticed other folks who came in well after us including a family of 4 leaving after having brunch and we are still waiting to get dm's. the waitress then brought us toast...well, warmed bread, popped in the toaster and right back out. not exactly toast, but I did not want to ask the waitress for anything. Millie's - the dm is still good and the coffee is not great as it used to be, but it is not worth the wait we endured. it was not crazy busy, I have seen Millie's jam packed and lines out the door and never had to wait that long for my food. we should have not left a tip for Kiara but we did 10%, hopefully, she shares with the server giving us water and coffee - that server was the only reason we left a tip. one star for the worst service from Kiara. it ruined our morning and meal. and because of the rotten service and attitude, Millie's rates one star. in the past, I always had decent service and great food which would garner 4 stars, but not this time. and one other thing, since Millie's is not a diner and has upscale prices, why is there a beer pitcher tipping jar for the cooks/chefs? shouldn't Millie's pay them a decent wage? will we return, most likely and hopefully, there will be a staffing change and service will improve. but it will take me awhile to get over this poor episode of service. poor service will bring down Millie's and wait staff income will suffer too.

Great eclectic place that refuses to label itself. Fun atmosphere and friendly staff. Yummy food. The only criticism I would have is that they didn't prepare the snap peas well at all. They didn't remove the tip or vein/string and it made them impossible to eat. Painful and chewy and not worth eating - too bad when that was the yummy green of my meal. Otherwise very good and I would return.

Visited for dinner on a brisk Tuesday evening. No wait whatsoever. Kitschy decor - diner / jukebox. I'm not sure if all of the savory dishes are cooked in the front, but it was fun watching while we were watching for our food. The bread basket had a sliced warm half baguette and cornbread, with butter. How often are baguettes served warm? The butter was also perfect. Started with half a dozen Chesapeake Bay oysters (came with vinaigrette) and a mushroom/greens/pecorino dish. The mushroom dish flavor was very strong and slightly salty. We each ordered an entree and ordered another to share. I had Millie's Bouillabaisse. It is a seafeed stew that came with chunks of salmon, clams, shrimp, potatoes, and crostini with a slightly spicy edge. It was light and flavorful. Filling yet not heavy which was great. My dinner companion had the Grilled Lamb T-Bone. Her thoughts were similar to mine - flavorful, filling, yet light. We had to try the Thai Spicy Shrimp given its history on Millie's menu. Also, since we sat across from the bar/front kitchen, we saw it was a popular dish. It was unexpected deliciousness (I've visited Thailand before and have had my share of disappointing pad thai dishes in the US). It has a slight kick, slight sweetness, and perfect crunch with the red cabbage/peanuts. The rice noodle is slightly thicker than standard pad thai noodles. We finished 75% of it and I was slightly sad not to take the rest to go since we were staying at a hotel. For dessert, I had the profiteroles (two medium sized, stuffed with vanilla gelato and drizzled in chocolate sauce). It was perfect. My dining companion had the pear crisp - no complaints there!

Some of the best food in Richmond. For Sunday brunch, you need to get there at 9am or before, or be prepared to wait an hour to be seated. However, if you do arrive at 10am, go in and grab on of their great bloody marys, it makes the wait seem a lot shorter !! I've been there dozens of times over the years, and have Never been disappointed.

This is my favorite brunch spot in Richmond, hands down. Castro's Mess is the best--I'm a sucker for anything with slow roasted pork. Hands down the best place to eat in Richmond! The 2nd to last bar stool makes a dying donkey noise when you rotate left to right. Someone should fix it. Or, someone should put the donkey out of its misery. Love that the kitchen is right next to the entrance.

I had been wanting to try Millie's for ages and finally go there early for brunch. So worth being up early and worth the hype. I got Castro's Mess and it was delightful. Threw some Sriracha on it and bam, amazing. The home fries were great as well. We'll seasoned.

Given the reviews, I had high hopes for this place. In short, if "hip" were a food, then this would be a 5-star review, but this review is based on our dining experience yesterday. We arrived around noon for brunch and were seated right away at the small counter near the cooking station. The man who seated us called these the "best seats in the house" and watching the cooks work was fun. From here things went downhill. Our drinks were virgin without our asking them to be; that said, the Bloody Mary MIX that we were served had a nice amount of horseradish in it, which many don't. As for our food--we were in the mood for brunch, so my sister ordered the General Lee, and I the Benny. We shared so that we could taste both dishes, which works well since each plate offers 2 poached eggs. Well, the poached eggs were the highlight of the meal--absolutely, perfectly poached with molten yolks that seeped out delightfully over the bread underneath and the whites offering a slight tang of vinegar from the poaching water. The Benny, a take on Eggs Benedict obviously, swaps croissants for English muffins to ill effect. Country Ham is a good meat selection here, however. The General Lee consists of poached eggs over a different variety of ham (not as good as the Country Ham) and a cheese biscuit. These dishes were OK, but mainly because of the poached eggs. The potatoes served alongside both meals were so over-seasoned as to be inedible. I hope that we're not getting to the point at which chefs are so fearful of under-seasoning that they are going overboard in the other direction. Of course, no one asked us how our meal was as we were eating. And to continue that theme, no one in the restaurant thanked us as we paid our check and left. Just a quick thank you would have been appreciated--I mean, we did spend about $45 for brunch (before tip). But, you know, this is one of those places where they don't care because they don't have to care. They've got the reviews, the hipster cred, the location, and maybe some good dishes. I won't find out about that, however, because I never will visit Millie's Diner again.

Great food. Long waits. Enough said.

My favorite brunch spot in Richmond, hands down. Order a drink (or three) while you wait. It's worth it! The veggie mess and huevos rancheros are both incredible and come in huge portions.

Love this place every time. Food is consistently excellent and the vibe is great, without being self-consciously hip. Millies has been around long enough they don't have to strive to eclectic, they just are.

Service. Well staffed, but slow service just due to the amount of people. Everyones friendly as well so they'll take the time to chit chat with ya. Just wait your turn and flag someone down! Drink. Evil keevil rum punch. Not too heavy. Well balanced. 8 dollars is a little heavy, for a breakfast drink but it comes in a large generous glass. Food. Devils mess. Refer to all the previous reviews. Absolutely amazing. Probably one of the tastiest dishes ive had for breakfast, and from where i am (Los angeles) there are plenty of breakfast options to choose from. Its saying a lot.

Ummm. Hi. I love this place! I came here for brunch and the staff was so nice and friendly. The were happy & funny & showing pictures of their dogs. I had a delicious mimosa while we were waiting to be seated, and let me tell ya...just a tiny bit of OJ in that giant glass. It's probably a good thing we had to wait to sit down and eat because I wanted to eat the entire fricken menu. We got seated at the bar, which was actually pretty cool because I could watch the guys cooking the whole time. 2 dudes running this tiny kitchen for the whole place. They had everything pretty much down to a science, it was like watching a dance. Aaaannnddd since we were seated right there, I got to drool at everyone else's food before the servers came to take it away and was trying to plot my next meal here already (Don't worry, I didn't actually drool IN anyone's food). Torturous waiting. I had decided on the Huevos rancheros and added avocado (because I'm obsessed and they make all egg breakfasts better). So happy with my choice, it was so delicious in fact that I'm afraid to get other stuff because I don't want to have diners remorse because I didn't get this deliciousness again. Fricken awesome. Just go and eat huevos rancheros now. And the best part is, I can walk to this place from my apartment. I will be back. A lot.

im sure the food here is great. but seeing as the hostess was one of the rudest i have ever met we left before even being seated. Understandable to be stressed when its busy but your customers are the ones that make your job possible. Take care of them and smile instead of shunning them.

Whether lunch, brunch, or dinner this is one of my RVA all star picks. It's hard to go wrong here. The food is sublime yet easily accessible. The exact same should be noted with the restaurant staff as a whole. Be careful though. You might find yourself as a regular.

Rotating menu based on inventory and local products. Everything on the menu looked amazing, I settled for the filet with blue cheese and it was ridiculously good. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu... Definitely the best place in Richmond you can eat at; really great for a nice dinner date

Hey you know what's cool? When you enter a packed diner at 230PM, are seated and then are promptly told by your waitress, "Hey I'll be right back, by the way we close in three minutes." Thanks for the warm welcome and unexpected/unannounced afternoon closure! We left.

This is an unbelievable find. Visiting Richmond for the Marathon and had heard a lot about Millie's. To say we were happy with our choice would be a serious understatement. It's hard to believe that the amazing food comes from t he small two man kitchen in the front. Service matched the food. Owner engaged and working hard to please the packed house. The pan seared Oyster Mushroom with lardons, arugula and Parma Reggio were likely one of the best mushroom dishes I've ever eaten. The house special Thai shrimp were fantastic as well. Had a bite of everything else our table of 5 ordered and there was not a weak link among them. I'll visit here every time I'm in Richmond. Simply fabulous. GB

My sister and I stopped in Millie's for the most important meal of the week - Sunday Brunch! After a short wait, we were seated at the bar which allowed us to strike up a conversation with the owner. He's passionate about his product and we watched as he inspected each dish that passed from the kitchen. I had the Huevos Rancheros- Delicious! Mine was the perfect portion. My sister raved about her perfectly poached eggs. My critiques are minor. We had to wait outside on the patio until seating came available. It was a cold morning, and patrons are offered little in the way of warmth (I'm visiting from Florida, so the brisk morning was a shock). My sister's meal contained an unexpected substitution and she was not notified at the time of order. Millie's menu board announces "no substitutions" on many entrees, so I would have expected they would have announced a switch. Millie's is on my list for my next stop over in Richmond.
