This use to be THE place to go when I was a kid. I loved Shoney's. I'm not sure what happened, but the food has gone downhill. It really breaks my heart to see places like these go because I had so many childhood memories here. This particular location seems to keep some clientele still, but definitely is not as popular as it use to be. I wish they would revamp the menu and the restaurant, maybe that could breathe some life into this place!

I went for the buffet. The server was great. Very enthusiastic. I tipped her well. However the food was awful and cold. And I got sick after all was said and done. Will not go back there

Once again I find myself here. I the only patron. It's sad. This place is a gem. Of course, it is "pre-church release time." The servers are really attentive and I've always found the food to be delicious, properly prepared and most importantly, properly presented. And yes, the bathroom is clean. I am always PLEASANTLY surprised when I enter a men's room and NOT have to hold my breath. The only suggestion would be to improve the ascetics. Replacing the ripped cushions on the boot seats and perhaps replace the carpeting. Also, increase the advertising. If the management keeps the current staff, this location could once again become the "go to place" for get togethers. I'll continue to visit. It is one of those places from my youth that still stands and provides a welcome link to days gone by.

Sigh. Okay, here we go... I'm a slightly *ahem* older fella, I came up during an era before the advent of the internet and fast food franchises took over the retail world. It used to be that sit down restaurants were the thing to do back in the day. Life was much more slower and simpler then... Shoney's represents a bit of the last vestiges of that time in my life. Much like how I avoid K-Mart and Sears for all of their unhip and outdated ways, I know I should avoid Shoney's as well...but it just keeps calling me... Located on East Little Creek Road next to the Calvary Christian School to its west and the AMF Norfolk lanes to its east, Shoney's sits in an outdated building that looks like something constructed when half of the Yelpers using Yelp weren't even born yet. But wait, there's more... Because when you enter you'll do a double take and wonder if it's 1983 judging by the decor, from the carpet to the framed artwork on the wall. Don't get me wrong, I can dig the whole vintage look...but not like this. Not for a company like Shoney's. They're like the K-Mart of the industry...freshen up and at least look the part! It's like eating in a thrift store but the prices don't reflect 1983 at all though. My favorite meal of the day is breakfast and I used to come by on Sunday's from time to time to eat at their brunch buffet. The decor is outdated but the food I've eaten there isn't bad. But then again, it's hard to mess up eggs, bacon, pancakes, and home fries. The straw that broke the camel's back and the reason why I haven't been back is that during my last visit while I was eating brunch in peace at my table, the patrons at the table directly across from me began to argue. Now, when I say argue I'm not talking about the type of banter between Cowboys and 49ers fans. Nope, these patrons, were in a heated argument where one of them screamed at the top of her lungs, "Do something about it!" Like Kermit the Frog, I sipped my tea minding my own business expecting the staff or even management to approach this table and diffuse the situation. Things got so heated that other patrons were beginning to look for the exits. No one, not staff nor management approached the table and just let them continue arguing at the top of their lungs until they finally left some 20 minutes or so later. What angered me most is that my waitress then came by my table after the ordeal and started laughing about the situation. Totally unsatisfactory! After that experience, any hope that I had for the place just went downhill. I'm not a fan nor do I recommend.

Back in the day, a trip to Shoney's was a treat. Now, it is a place where I go to get a Strawberry Pie; end of sentence. Meh. Your mileage may vary. @Removeyourhat
