I stopped here last night with my girlfriend, but we didn't have a reservation. They had two seats at the bar which was just fine with us. Jamie was a great bartender/server. He was gregarious, and made us feel quite at home. I had the Bouillabaisse, and my girlfriend had the Lobster Risotto. We shared the Pannacotta for dessert. Everything was remarkable, even the bread. We will definitely return!

I'm definitely a fan of this place. My wife and I went for a good quality lunch on a Friday before wine tasting in Middleburg. We were impressed by the escargot, which was very good (no weird smells or anything) and came out piping hot. The potato leek soup was the best we've ever had, and the lobster risotto was delicious, maybe even iconic. We also had the halibut which was cooked perfectly, yet the flavor was subdued and was overshadowed by how great everything else was. The wine recommendation went well with the meal. Ambiance and people. The clientele were fairly WASPy (I guess it was Middleburg after all), but the ambiance wasn't fancy enough to be considered stuffy. There was paper over the tablecloths, which was surprising given the pricing and quality of the food. The staff weren't refined and snooty, much the opposite, although they were all very kind. Overall I was a fan and would like to return. However, this place is not like Goodstone or the Salamander. If you want a knockout, 5-course French meal with wine pairing, go to Goodstone. If however you want to spend less than $100 for two people (including wine), go here.

Came here this past weekend with my fiance's family and some family friends of ours: fantastic! We were greeted and waited on with top-notch service and everyone enjoyed the delicious food! Chef John is a genius in the kitchen. We each sampled various dishes. The jumbo shrimp app was to die for, as was the lobster risotto. Definitely the favorite dishes of the night! Shout-out to our waiter, Gerald; he was the best! Very attentive, polite, and informative. The perfect host for our evening! Highly recommend. Ask for Gerald!

The French Hound is a cute little french bistro nestled in the town of Middleburg. The menu is small, but offers both familiar French comfort foods (croque madame/monsieur, boudin blanc, cassoulet, steak frites, etc) and more Americanized fares (pizza, ceasar salad, etc). They also have a nice wine list and a well stocked bar. I love coming here for brunch. If you are in the area for the Middleburg Christmas parade you absolutely must make a reservation here as their Bloody Mary or Mimosa is the perfect send off before watching corgis in the cold.

After a long day of tasting in VA wine country, we stopped by here (with reservations) for a great meal. This cozy French spot serves up amazing comfort food. Since, I as drinking all day, why not continue, right? So, I ordered the hibiscus sparkler that came with an edible candied flower. Not to mention, the drink is just so pretty! To start, I shared the escargot then had the lobster risotto for my entree. The escargot was delicious and soooo flavorful. It was definitely a highlight of my dinner. As with the risotto, it was pure guilt-inducing comfort food. Amazing. My boyfriend ordered the steak frites, but I was so obsessed with my choices that I didn't even try it (and I usually do). So happy we made the choice to dine here! No regrets.

I was in town for business and stopped by for lunch before I drove back to DE. The place looked fantastic and menu is fine dining bistro. I ordered iced tea and it was the chemical mix concentrate you add water too. Of course it's disgusting and I was going to switch to diet coke but I never got the chance. The tea came out quick but that was the last time anyone came to my table. I stared at the menu for about 10 mins. I know waiters typically think if you're looking at the menu you're still trying to decide. I put it down. I started trying to make eye contact with the one waiter I saw. Nothing. I waited another 5 mins And walked out. There was only 9 people in the restaurant. I don't get it. I had so much time to study the menu it all looked good. Maybe next time.

What an adorable restaurant!! We came as a group of 3 friends, looking for a nice place to catch up in. We made reservations at The French Hound which took me about an hour to get to from Alexandria..but was worth the trip! I appreciated the classy yet non pretentious atmosphere, the cute yellow walls, and the vintage decor. For appetizers we had the escargot- which was served in the classic buttery preparation and were all nicely sized. I appreciated the wine menu which took me right back to France, and we ordered a bottle of Cotes du Rhone to share. For entree, I ordered the lobster risotto which was AMAZING. The serving was plentiful, and the dish was filling. The lobster was served removed from the shell and served cut up. The risotto was prepared perfectly. For dessert, we ordered the Le Torte au Chocolat et Noisette which was a rich chocolate cake-like dessert. The service, atmosphere, and food were amazing and I would highly recommend.

Had my birthday lunch here back in May.... Just sat at the bar and chatted with the staff. It was a quiet Saturday. Amazing escargot, healthy cocktails, great atmosphere. Highly recommend!!! Can't wait to go back for dinner! Hmmm maybe tonight.....

We ordered two appetizers two entrees and two deserts I must say the appetizers and entrees were delicious really high quality and you could tell a lot of love went into the dishes. The deserts on the other hand we mediocre which was surprising for a french resturant, but with that said we will definitely be back

Great food & a beautiful atmosphere. We loved the food & the fact that they use local produce & meats. The confit de canard was fabulous!

Just OK. We were in town for the Salamander Resort. We weren't familiar with the area of options for restaurants so we popped into this one. Although we received excellent service and the atmosphere was what were looking for, I can't say I was impressed by the value of the food. The quality was not great for the price we paid ($50/person). We had the hierloom tomatoes special (very good), crab cakes (very good) and ratatouille pizza (mediocre). Although the ingredients were fresh, the pizza dough itself was chewy and unimpressive - I've made better pizza at home. I'd also recommending have a couple of more vegetarian dishes since this is an American take on French cuisine.

I really wanted to love this place, but I didn't. The food was ok depending on what you order. The special at the time was good but the tuna item on the menu I ordered tasted weird, so I didn't eat much of it. I ended up getting sick later so it might've actually been something wrong with the way it was cooked. Apart from that, the other reason for the 1 star is that the place was not clean at all. The bathroom was an absolute disaster.

This restaurant offers a nice, cozy setting. The food was good, although a bit overpriced. I'm glad we tried the French Hound, and I would like to go back and try their brunch. That being said, I prefer the Red Fox Inn for both food and ambiance given the minimal price difference.

I've been to this restaurant several times when visiting from out of town and it's my go-to choice for a restaurant! Everything is pretty traditional French food and absolutely amazing!

You simply must go and experience The French Hound when in Middleburg. The menu and service so genuine and creative. It's French food without the heavy sauces or creams. Unique, consistant and the french fries are worth every calorie. But don't be fooled by my french fry compliment, they offer traditional French dishes like escargot and shell fish plus the fresh pastry. Go and enjoy ~ you'll love the whole experience.

  • Valentina P.

This is a 4 brushing 5. My husband and I had the appetizer of escargot, and it was probably the best I've ever had in the US. We got our dishes and drinks, and my scallop special was again about the best scallops I've had. The downside was my husband's french dip. His meat was tough and made it hard to eat and not as pleasant as he wanted. The fries were suitable. I would 100% go here again. We most want to check out the pizzas and I want to try the beef bourgeon and my husband wants to try a pate sandwich. We had enough belief in this place to assume anything we try would be appealing.

I am in love with Middleburg. And I am also in love with The French Hound. It's rustic, charming, comfortable and delicious! Our reservation was for 8:30, but we got there at around 7:45 and were able to be seated right away. Very nice! While the restaurant is in an older building, you feel like you are dining in someone's home. The problem with the French Hound's menu is that you want to get everything. Their French baguettes are ridiculously delightful and hard to share with your dining companion. The radishes with sea salt is a great starter to warm up your appetite. We also had a crab appetizer served with a beautiful mustard sauce. It was so good that Bill asked for a small bowl of it for the rest of his meal. If you get the mussels, the portion size is shareable for two. They were some of the best mussels I've ever had. You will want an extra loaf of bread to soak up the buttery broth. For dinner, we had the scallops and the pork loin. Both were hearty and perfect. At this point, why stop, right? I came to this restaurant and told myself I wasn't going to have dessert. But the table next to us had the profiteroles and we just could not say no. And we ate the whole thing! We will definitely be coming back.

    (4)
  • Vincent B.

Get the radishes for an app. Their pizzas are inventive, and the scallops are hearty. It's consistently good, and you'll always feel well taken care of. Four stars just because the menu is short and always the same. C'mon chef, I know you got it in you to shake it up!

Great experience and a perfect location for my wife and I to get away on a weekday date night. The food was wonderful - I had the duck breast and my wife had the risotto. The service wasn't the quickest but we weren't in a hurry. We will certainly be back but will plan additional time to explore the super-quaint town of Middleburg.

While dinner might meet many diners expectations of a good meal, the lunch menu (and staff) needs a serious overhaul. Overpriced and underwhelming is the theme and seems to be the norm in Middleburg. This restaurant can really do better. Stale baguette and the driest pâté made for a lousy lunch. Then the bill came and I felt punched in the purse to boot.

Just got seated at French hound. Had to wait for table to be set up, with two empty tables adjacent to the table finally given. Then. Ignored by wait staff, and manager for 10 minutes. Finally ordered sandwiches. We'll see how long that takes. So far, not impressed! Wait for our ordered was very reasonable. Sandwiches were above average. And the wait staff became very attentive. I am wondering about the manager, but the staff recovered nicely. I would give this restaurant another go.

So our family of four is out for a day in Middleburg when we start looking for somewhere to eat a late lunch. Unbeknownst to us it's Gold Cup day and every place we go is packed. I stop by The Grooming Room and see my friend Dwight who recommends the French Hound. We walk over and although there is a wait it's only twenty minutes or so. We were seated on a delightful little outdoor patio that has four tables. Soon after we were seated two other tables sat down and before we know it they've gotten bread, butter and water. Us? Not so much. I walked inside and this problem was soon remedied and our server came out and started the whole lunch process. No more wait hiccups after that. My wife ordered the Radis which had me questioning her palate. When they came out they were unlike any radish I had ever had and were long, not round, and served with flaky sea salt. Absolutely delicious and extremely fresh tasting. Next came the escargot. Roasted in garlic, basil and herbed butter these were probably the best escargot I've had in years. If not ever! All four of us, my wife and our two teenage kids, couldn't get enough of these and there was nothing left when we were done. We soaked up the butter with the french bread on our table and all agreed that we would come back and order at least two of these next time. Next came an incredible squash bisque for lack of a better term, served with creme fraiche that was out of this world. Our table also had the Mixte, a ham and comte sandwich served on baguette, a special of the day sandwich with salmon and the steak frites, also both amazingly good. We finished with two orders of the chocolate crepes which were okay but not quite as light as I like them and only filled with whipped cream. Not bad but the special pumpkin ice cream profiteroles would probably have been the better choice. We will definitely be back for lunch and/or dinner in the very near future as this new discovery is right up our alley. Bon appetite!

We had a party of 10 people and we were sat in this beautiful private room. The food was excellent and everyone was very happy with their meal. Service was good but not exceptional. I'd go back during my next visit to Middleburg. It's worth a visit.

Today is our one year anniversary. We had looked around different menus to pick a place for brunch before visiting Barrel Oak Winery. We are very pleased with our choice. The restaurant is very elegant and simple. Food is very good. Service is right on time without having people all over you. I really recommend this for a family visit or even taking a date for wonderful time!

Our group of 6 was here for lunch on Easter. The food was great, and the service was excellent on this very busy day. We were there for a long time - closed the lunch seating, but staff never hurried us along. All in all a lovely day.

What a gem of a restaurant. On the recommendation of my innkeeper, I made a reservation for dinner here and was overwhelmed by the quality of the food, the attention to detail and the careful but not hovering service. I had the special lump crabmeat appetizer, which came with a dollop of French - style and very delicious mayonnaise in the center of the plate, so you could have as much or as little as you wished. Then the arugula salad, which they made for me without shallots and with dressing on the side. The heirloom tomatoes were a nice addition. For my entree I had the salmon, which came with gently steamed asparagus and a delightful white wine/lemon/butter sauce whose mystery ingredient was vanilla. So delicate and just the right tang for the salad. I had a perfect glass of Vouvray with dinner. I relented and had dessert after hearing my server describe the chocolate mousse and I have no regrets. It was served in a pastry tuille and topped with fresh raspberries. Heavenly. I finished this fabulous meal with a decaf espresso and will definitely return to the French Hound next time I am in Middleburg.

This is a classic French bistro. We had a wonderful dinner there tonight, starting with pate and ending with a chocolate crepe. The service was on point. French Hound is a great place for a night out.

Went there with Friends For Sunday Brunch Iwas very leery of going there because of the mixed reviews both on yelp and trip advisor I was pleasantly surprise as all the negatives about the restaurant are now positives from menu selection to service are now positives The management must look at the comments and Fix whatever wette perceived issues and turn it around My only issue was the weak Bloody Mary but I am sure if I had made a comment they would have strengthen it otherwise it was very well done as was all the good we ordered zit proved a wonderful experience as place I'll return to and recommend Nyff said

The French Hound is yet another country gem found in Virginia. The farmhouse feel will make you immediately comfortable upon arriving. Seating options consist of outside deck, or inside next to one of the many large picturesque windows. This is a perfect place for a 'ladies lunch'. There is no real parking lot, but should be plenty of street parking. The prices on Yelp say "$$$", but I felt it was cheaper/doable. The appetizers (bite size, and perfect for pre meal snacking) cost between $3-$4, and are quite special. We chose the salami and gherkin- lovely! I ordered the leek soup and arugala salad with chicken. Both were perfect portions and tasted devine. However delicious, the soup is VERY creamy.. rich x 100! So just prepare yourself for some caloric intake. My girlfriend had the shrimp sandwich, which came with a MASSIVE amount of fries! We eventually had to place the napkin over the plate because we couldn't stop enjoying the mount o' fry. Service was average, but the setting is really quite quaint-- and a nice option if on your way to near by winery.

We really enjoyed the French Hound. Marni is a delightful host and even though the restaurant was very busy, she and the wait staff accommodated our vegan requests graciously. Everything was, well, PERFECT. We were sad to leave the French Hound and Middleburg, but we look forward to returning!

After reading all the positive reviews with statements like "fit for foodies" and "gem" I was truly surprised at how mediocre The French Hound actually is. We went for fathers day and could not believe how awkward the wait staff was and the strange menu with "Snacks" and "Appetizers" right next to each other. We decided to get 3 "snacks" for the table...The pretzels and mustard turned out to be just some UTZ pretzels dumped on a plate with what tasted like Frenches mustard in a bowl. The "Salami and strong pickles" was a piece of salami cut down to such tiny pieces that you couldn't even taste them over the strong pickle. Everyone in our group ordered something different as their main and no one finished. The upside, it's close to a great ice cream parlor and Middleburg is always fun to walk around and window shop.

Stopped by on our way home from wine tasting (wife's birthday) and even though we missed out on the lunch menu, the meal that we did get to choose from from their limited menu was nothing short of perfection! We look forward to coming back again.

Ehhhhhh. Food was marginal and the service was slow. The waiter paid very little attention to us, and was a little odd. Paid three bucks for a bag of rold gold pretzels and Dijon mustard. Not sure why any resturant would serve a bag of pretzels as a paid appetizer and not tell you. Who's not going to be disappointed when that shows up. Lame! Had steak and wife had chicken, we left half uneaten. The sauce was lousy and the potatoes had no flavor. We won't be going back.

My kind of place!!! Has to be my favorite restaurant. Northern Virginia desperately needs more places like the Hound. The food is top notch and the atmosphere is a mix of casual, comfort, and class. You can go in old jeans or a $$$ suit and everybody feels right at home. GREAT wine list. It's not the fanciest French food ever(good thing) but it's always one meal that I savor with some nice wine. Can't go wrong with the steak and fries...

Yet another great find, thanks to yelp. On a recent weekend getaway, my girlfriend and I, as usual, planned out our meals well in advance, using yelp. This place is very charming, playful menu items and a nice, albeit small wine list. The staff are very friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. We started with some "snacks" not quite tapas, more like, well snacks, like a small bowl of pretzels and a few slices of hard salami, a real nice way to start a nice meal. I ordered a special and the meat was a little dry, as was the dish my girlfriend ordered. The deserts were lovely, we had some nice wine and it was a lovely evening.

We ended up at the French Hound by local recommendation and were very pleased with both the meal and the service. We were seated in a lovely spot right next to the fireplace which afforded nice privacy and great ambiance. Everything on the menu looked amazing but I was sold by a special including fillet mignon topped with lobster chunks and béarnaise sauce. My husband had the Truffled Lobster Pot Pie which had chunks of lobster large enough to be considered a whole meal in other restaurants. We didn't taste much of the advertised truffles but the rest of the meal made us forget all about that. The fillet was cooked perfectly and was tender enough to cut with a butter knife. My husband's "pot pie" was more of a thick stew topped with a lovely puff pastry/biscuit. The fresh bread served with the meal was crunchy deliciousness on the outside and luscious on the inside. The only down side was the price; my entree was $38 and my husbands was $30. Adding a salad and bottle of wine made it date-night worthy instead of a regular event. Don't misinterpret - the price was completely justified, and we'd go again, it just won't be a regular occurrence.

This is yet one more very bad, amateurish, clueless, Middleburg Va restaurant. If you KNOW FOOD, you must ignore any of the reviews over 2 stars. I promise you willl be scratching your head. As usual, in these country towns, people are so wowed by a few silos, and some fox prints on the walls, that they can't accurately judge the food. Everything feels so cute to them. So, on the basis of food, not cuteness: They cannot cook. Stew is dry, without sauce, tasteless, and oily. Steak is average to bad. The chef has no idea what to do with lamb, incorrectly grilling the wrong parts ot the animal. Cream sauces are so bad, that I can taste the flour in them. The white sauce on the pizza is like liquid flour. Soups are grainy, because they are not propery strained. The bearnaise is oily and too thick, with minimal flavor. Escargot should be removed from the menu. It's that pedestrian. Mussels are average, to below. Truffles? This is where truffles come to be ruined, so it's good that you can't really find them. Fries are ok. Bread ok too. But, when we asked for more bread, they said we'd had our allottment, and they'd have to charge us for more. They also chaged for the bar pretzels. They said it was because they were served with mustard. So? A little mustard? Extra bread? How cheap can you get?!! But the real problem is the bad food. What can I say? You come here thinking you're going to get a nice french meal, and you get the French inspired equivalent of The Olive Garden. Amateur hour at it's worst.

First time for lunch and it was, well, okay. The food was good but pricey and the service suffered at the hands of a few young kids who hand no idea how to pay attention to a table. The rooms/seating is scattered and the building has no central feel of flow. We are also sensitive to salt and I think they cook with a heavy hand.

Apparently Middleburg is known for its hunting and, as such, there are foxes and hounds EVERYWHERE in local establishments. Because of that, this place makes me think of the Disney movie "The Fox and the Hound." Sure the movie came out before I was born, but I certainly remember watching it when I was little, back in the days before Pixar. The story goes something like this: baby fox Tod and puppy Copper meet and become friends. As they grow up they come to learn that they're natural enemies and cannot be friends (insert tears here). Fighting, guns and chasing ensue. **Spoiler alert** Copper saves Tod from being killed by a hunter and, although they have to go their separate ways, their love and friendship for each other will prevail in their hearts, even if they aren't able to play anymore. The French Hound is like that...if Disney had French subtitles...and the restaurant made little girls cry. We ate lunch at the French Hound en route to an afternoon of wine tasting. To start the meal we sampled the spicy peanuts ($3), which were in fact not spicy at all. They had a nice flavor since they'd been powdered with more than just salt, but they didn't bring the heat that Justin and I were hoping for. Since I was still full from a multi-course dinner at Goodstone Inn the night before, I opted for the lightest (non-salad) option I could find on the menu -- pizza with tomatoes and basil (around $10). This wasn't your typical Italian pizza dough, seeing as it's a French restaurant, but still tasted quite good. The dough was thicker than a normal thin crust without being puffy like a typical thick crust -- almost like a flat bread. The pizza was topped with slabs of fresh mozzarella, slices of fresh tomatoes and bits of basil. Overall pretty tasty and a nice enough take on a non-French item. Justin's steak with chive butter was overcooked and I couldn't really taste the chives in the butter. It was definitely green but I couldn't actually pick out the flavor of the herb from that of the meat and butter. There's so much the French Hound could do with its space, yet I feel like the interior is somewhat outdated and getting a bit run down for how nice the location is in cute, quaint Middleburg. The decorations and furnishings seemed as old as the average age of the patrons, of whom Justin and I were far outliers. It's essentially a converted house, so all of the rooms have been converted into multiple small dining areas. I have a feeling this would be a much better dinner spot since the lighting would be dim and the setting more romantic than just a lunch filled with older folks surrounding you but between the restaurants at Goodstone and Ashby Inns, our evening meals were all booked up.

Service was well below par and food over priced given the quality. Hard to recall the last time I had such a disappointing filet. The crab cake was mediocre. The salad and gazpacho saved this from an even lower rating.

My wife and I had lunch there this past weekend. I like to think of myself as somewhat of an "onion soup" connoisseur since I try to order it anywhere its on a menu (similar to my fixation with reuben sandwiches) - I thought it was good, but not great. What was great, though, was the spicy lamb sausage sandwich. That in itself made the whole experience unique, and would definitely go back again.

This little French spot has a very friendly, attentive wait staff and good food. Excellent fries, very nice Caesar salads, properly cooked to order steaks, nice Bernaise, nice desserts (especially if you are a fan of Moorenko's ice cream-- lately of McLean but more recently of Fredrick, MD). Middleburgers use it for both special events (not too special) as well as for family get togethers. Several tables of multi generations with strollers and toddlers- all well behaved but none the less- there. Al fresco dining available, tiny bar, small but cute interior. Extra parking is in the lot directly below on the east side with connecting stairs. Middleburg was deserted on a summer Saturday night, but the restaurant was full by 7pm. Last and final servings of a gorgeous fresh peach tart went temptingly past us --to other diners by 6:30. So keep your taste buds flexible. Dress is 'casually elegant' to funky. Elderly gent was in vertical pink striped jacket, big polka dot bow tie. Could almost hear Sargent Pepper's band following him. Bon Appetit!

I went here on my birthday at the suggestion from someone working at Green Hill vineyard. This is a cute little restaurant. The owner was absolutely charming, her husband is the chef and he walked past our table to wish me a happy birthday. I found this restaurant, cozy and rustic, very Middleburg and very warm. The food was delicious, we shared a salad, escargot and steak. Be prewarned, if you share a plate and ask the staff to divide the meal for you they will charge a fee, however, our waitress (who was wonderful btw) graciously took this off the bill since she felt she did not adequately warn us. The restaurant got a bit noisy and crowded as we were leaving-we sat in the bar area since we did not have a reservation, but the owner really made an effort to fit us in which I appreciated. This was a lovely dining experience. Make reservations before going!!!!

We stopped in at an "off" time of the day...after lunch but before dinner. The menu for that time was a bit small, but still mighty. We had lamb sausage with aioli, pretzels with spicy mustard, olives, and house made pizza. The service staff was friendly and never missed a beat. The food came out in a timely manner and was delicious. I am looking forward to stopping back for dinner!

I have never been disappointed in all of the times I have been to the French Hound. I have always been for lunch so I really can't speak for the dinner menu, but my meals have always been delicious, well prepared and the vegetables very fresh. I have ordered the pizza a few times and each has been very good. They change the menu seasonally and I can't remember exactly what the ingredients were but one was asparagus and mushrooms, one goat cheese and artichoke and the last was duck confit with caramelized onions. Yum.

Disclaimer: I have been here on three separate occasions now, but all three were for lunch, and two were on weekdays. Therefore, I honestly don't have any insight into the crowds at dinner. That being said, all three of my visits have been absolutely fantastic... Enough so that I have found myself making excuses to drive all the way out to Middleburg just so I can stop in. (Maybe I should go check out some antiques today that are way out of my price range? I mean, I LOVE horse and fox paintings, and porcelain dishes with foxes and horses on them, and silver forks with fox heads... right??) What I love most about this place: the AMBIANCE. Sitting inside this place really makes me feel like I'm in some quaint little french country restaurant in the middle of wine country (the old-school Chateau Margaux signs definitely add to that). I say to you: Don't come here if you're looking for a quick bite to eat and to rush out the door, so you can make sure to hit all the knick-knack and antique shops in Middleburg (gotta get that last fox collector's plate, ahhh!), and still beat the traffic heading back east. If that's your agenda, go somewhere else, because this place moves at a relaxing, easy pace, and is meant to be enjoyed and lingered in. I also love how both the Chef/Owner and Sous Chef are ALWAYS out and about on the floor, stopping at tables to ask how the meal is and greet everyone. It's such a nice gesture. That brings me to service: I was surprised reading some of the reviews on here that mentioned some not so great service. I have always been greeted very promptly and warmly, and have always found the staff (especially the bar staff) to be friendly and chatty. Of course, I do look especially amazing and important pretty much all of the time, so that might have something to do with it ;) I've also never had to wait for a table or my meal, but again, I've never been during the dinner rush, so take that at face value. Wine list. Alright, folks, here's where I'm a bit of a snob- I mean, expert... I HATE when you go to a restaurant only to find half-decent bottles priced like they are a 1976 Montelena, and I hate even more when a restaurant lacks anything decent at all. Not the case with the Hound. The wines are chosen purposefully and priced reasonably. Food has always been great. The menu changes seasonally, which is nice if you visit often enough. This summer, I have especially enjoyed both the Chicken Paillard, and a really wonderful chilled potato and argula soup. Every dish I've ever had here has been prepared with care and not overworked. Aaaand I'm drooling and trying to think of another excuse to visit (that blanket with horses and foxes on it wasn't TOO gaudy...) I could really go on and on about this place, but I'll call it quits there, and leave you with this: if you happen to be out in Middleburg and are looking for a relaxing place to enjoy a leisurely, delicious lunch, look no further. The French Hound will not disappoint!

We have been wanting to try this restaurant for a long time. We were not impressed at all. The food was just okay. My husband asked for hot sauce, and was brought a large bottle of hot sauce which was empty except for about 2 drops. After our lunch, a server asked us if we enjoyed lunch while walking away with our dishes. I don't even know if he heard (or cared) what our answer was.

Kudos for owning a restaurant in Middleburg NOT named after a Fox. Sometimes I get so confused around here. Which "Fox" did I eat at today? The special was a grilled pizza. The tomatoes are heirlooms from a local farm. The mozzarella is hand-made by Chef John. The chiffonade basil was lightly sprinkled on top giving the whole pizza the perfect asymmetrical appearance so rarely seen on the dish today. The crust is also worth mentioning. First, I feel if you want something consistent from one bite to the next, go to McDonalds. This crust had just enough variance throughout to add a layer of interest to the mouth-feel. It was a thin hand-tossed dough, a little thicker on one side of the pizza than the other. The result was that some of the slices had a chewy resistance to the bite and pieces on the opposite side were almost, but not quite, crunchy like a tortilla. If you've never considered the kinesthetic qualities of your food before, perhaps it's time you did. This was a treat all the way around. Bottom line: mmmmmmmmmmm After that I asked Marny for a glass of wine. I wasn't specific on what I wanted and was ready for anything. She brought a glass of Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise which I immediately called "Sunshine In a Glass." It was a perfect apricot color with a sweet, not-syrupy and quick finish and a hint of orange. If the Wine Cellar down the street had any bottles in stock I would have taken one home right then. It didn't hurt that the weather in Middleburg was perfect today. This was my best lunch experience of the month. There's outdoor seating and a variety of cozy rooms indoors for seating as well. I saw booths and tables of various sizes so I'm sure they could handle just about any sized group.

I met someone for lunch at the French Hound during the week before Christmas. It was very festive, and most of the other diners were there for Christmas lunches. We had the Steak Frites, which was very nice. The service was attentive and pleasant. All-in-all a great experience. If you go, you need to know that the parking is in the lot on the left side as you face the restaurant.

Hmm.... On the fourth or fifth visit to the French Hound, we dropped in and put our names in for a table, realizing there'd be a wait on a crowded night. Waiting in line is no problem for good food. However, after we were waiting at least 45 minutes and receiving a few promises that our table was almost ready, a group that was clearly from the Middleburg elite dropped in and asked if they could please get a table for a special occasion even though they didn't make a reservation. The owner seated them ahead of us. We reminded her that we'd been waiting longer than that group and she flat-out lied to us and claimed that that group had a reservation, even though we clearly heard them state that they didn't. I don't plan to return to a place that clearly has no interest in having me as a customer.

Went here for dinner and we had very high expectations. The beef carpaccio was the only thing good. Seared Ahi Tuna was not fresh and had a gas grill taste. Grilled leg of lamb was tough, chewy and little flavor. I should have caught this. That type of cut is ideal for slow cooking...not grilling.

For a lunch interview I met with my interviewer and we decided that a french restaurant would be best seeing how we both lived in Paris at one time. Under pressure I ordered the same thing as my interviewer, but thankfully it was 2 dishes that I love. Potato leek soup, and an arugula salad. You can't really mess up a salad so that was fine. The soup wasn't very hot and should have probably been a vichyssoise. It was definitely lacking a real leek/onion flavor. I hate salt, and yet again here I was heavily salting my dish to squeeze any bit of flavor out of it that I could. I'm sure I'll try it again as the menu is pretty extensive, and the price point is good for the area- but yesterday just missed the mark for me. Minus another star- the water glasses are terribly small, and I felt like I had to beg for water over and over again. On a 90 degree day that is just bad business. BUY BIGGER GLASSES FOLKS!

Underneath a beautiful, blue sky with a bottle of wine and some fantastic french food with a special someone - what could be better! The crab appetizer was fantastic. The scallops as an entree was absolutely wonderful. This is a quaint little restaurant with attentive servers that's well worth the drive to Middleburg. We'll definitely be back on another moon-lit night!

C'est si bon! Tucked away off the main drag in Middleburg is the casual yet refined French Hound. The chic Provençal décor lends an elegant farmhouse feel, while the signature checkered bistro chairs evoke the Champs Elysées. Despite a few mini-hiccups in service -- like the hostess informing us she wasn't sure she had room for four of us, even though we had called in advance to check, showed up at a 3:00 pm lull, and most tables in the dining room remained empty during our meal -- we really enjoyed our lunch here. We started with a P'tit Goût of Cacahouètes Piquantes, or spicy peanuts. They appeared to be those eminently crunchy blister fried Virginia peanuts, dusted with just enough salt and heat. Small and satisfying, it was a nice way to open the meal (others have mentioned the tiny portion sizes of these p'tits goûts...they're called "petits" for a reason and listed under their own "snacks" category on the menu. At $3 a pop they're not appetizers, they're more amuses bouches.). Followed the cacahouètes with a dish of escargots, oven roasted with garlic, basil, and pastis herb butter. They were some the plumpest and most tender escargots I've sampled, and the accompanying crostini made the perfect vehicle for the leftover hot, garlicky butter. For lunch we ordered a steak frîtes, scallop risotto, rockfish, chorizo pizza, and an extra side of frîtes for good measure. The steak and scallop risotto were the stand-outs. My friend ordered her flat-iron cooked medium-well, and it came out more medium-rare, but she was fine with it and those who sampled it, too, secretly preferred it that way. The fries were delicious and thin, almost shoestring, fried nice and crisp with a sprinkling of fresh herbs. My scallops were caramelized to a beautiful, subtle sweetness, and the creamy risotto with porcini, peas, frisée, and balsamic reduction paired perfectly. Husband's rockfish was tender and moist, and our friend liked his chorizo pie, tho he was confused by the paper-thin slices. He'd been expecting chunks, in typical chorizo style. Add in a few glasses of wine (from a thoughtful and extensive list) and a few coffees, and the whole meal was reasonably priced. The French Hound makes for an excellent dining option in Middleburg, and I'm glad to have discovered it. A relaxed place serving up some surprisingly urbane food.

The wife and I have made a few trips to Middleburg, specifically to visit French Hound for lunch. On this last visit, the service was terrible. The waiter brought us a basket of bread. When we asked for some plates, his reply was "what for?" I guess he though we should just used the table as our plate. Later on the same waiter mixed up my order. I ordered the pate sandwich, which he brought out a sausage sandwich. When I told him that it was the wrong sandwich, his reply was "yea, whatever". I didn't take 1/2 day off work, travel 1.5 hours (both ways), and spent $120 for lunch to get an attitude by some beanhole, who had no business working at a French restaurant. I will never go back to this place again. They have lost my business for good. Management really need to either fired this guy or retrain him. Don't waste your time and money at this place. The food was never that good. The wife and I only went here because of the atmosphere and service, but now that's down the drain too, so why bother.

I've hoped to find a great little place to go for lunch while on a drive in the Virginia countryside and The French Hound certainly fits the bill. It is small and intimate but offers cuisine with worldly influences. As it was lunch and we had lots of things to do we went simple with the steak and fries. The steak was cooked to order and served with sautéed shallots and the fries were perfect. We had a nice chat with the owner whose husband was in back turning out the meals. I can't wait to go back for dinner one of these days and take the time to enjoy a meal with a bottle of wine and dessert.

I am not sure why they call this a French Restaurant, the food isn't really French. Maybe I went on a bad night but it wasn't too crowded but very loud, it felt more like a bar than a Restaurant. And the food and service was average at best.

Very bad experience with food, service and atmosphere. Definitely avoid this place. For real french fine dining try L'Auberge Chez Francois in Great Falls VA. I could easily overlook the Hound dining room's cheap porch-like furniture and cold decor if the food was good, but both the food and service were also very disappointing. Lobster pie had a few flecks of lobster ($30?) and filet was very undercooked. The manager came by and instead of making things right she claimed medium rare steaks have a cold red center (seriously?!) and i should have ordered medium if i wanted a bloody warm center. Foie gras app was overcooked and escargot was pesto versus traditional french preparation. Worst dining experience i have had in many, many years.

After a full-day of visiting nearby wine country, we stopped here for my uncle's birthday dinner. The service was excellent, the atmosphere was comfortable and "classy rustic," and the food was delicious. Although somewhat heavy (as French food often is) the portions were reasonable and the wines were thoughtful and well paired with our meals per our server's recommendations. Even more importantly (because this was a birthday dinner) the desserts (profiteroles and sorbets) that we split were a lovely end to the meal and didn't disappoint as desserts so often do. I would up my rating to 4.5-5 stars if the price point were a little lower, especially given how far away from the DC metro area this place is. As a getaway from the city, though, the location and surrounding town are unbeatable.

We visited this restaurant for lunch today and was pleasantly surprised. Although we have lived in the area for 20 years we had never been there. I always thought it would be snooty with heavy sauces but it was just the opposite. We had the radis small plate which was lovely in it's simplicity and flavor. The radishes were locally grown and very flavorful without being too hot. My friend had the scallops with risotta and she thought them to be cooked perfectly. I had the sausage which was served with a small salad of fresh greens and wonderful bread. The portions were fine, just not huge. It was good not to feel overly stuffed so that we had room for dessert. We shared the profiteroles for desert and it was a huge portion-big enough for two or even three to share and delicious. Among other dessert offerings are a cheese plate and a trio of sorbets. It's rare to find these options in any of the local restaurants. I'll definately be back to have dinner or just to stop by for a glass of wine and a nibble. I'll take this over the Red Fox any day! The French Hound is sharing top spot with my other local favorite -Hunter's Head in Upperville. Both are great but very different and it's wonderful to have them both in the neighborhood.

VERY NICE, VERY TASTY! Been 3 times and the meals, the wine and the service was all spot on. Ate in the bar area as well as the quaint dining areas. Delicious meals. When they have the filet, order it. One of the best filets i've ever had. The mussels, fries and the bread are all good too. We've had duck and swordfish there too. Totally worth the short drive and you won't be disappointed. Cozy and warm feeling.

We passed by Middleburg on our drive to Leesburg and found this place on yelp. I would give this place zero stars if I was given the option to. First, the service is ridiculously slow. Everything required a wait; from ordering the food, to being served, to getting our check. Second, the food is just ok and the portions are tiny. My six and eight year old nephews each was able to finish an entire entree (paella and the strip steak). Third, we ordered a pretzel ($3) for our two-year old and our jaws almost dropped to the floor when they brought out a plate of Rold-Gold pretzels with some dijon mustard. Any place that serves pretzels like this should get zero stars alone. There's also no complimentary bread. Overall, I don't understand why they received such great reviews but this is probably one of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had.

Atmosphere...quaint and cozy; just what you'd expect in Middleburg. Menu...The prices are good considering the caliber of food. I wish they had a little more to choose from. And they also need to invest in nicer menus. The menus they had the guest look like they were made for carry-out orders. Food...Pretty tasty. My wife ordered a lobster chicken pot pie that was presented in a copper sauce pan and spooned into a bowl. Awesome presentation. At one point our server recounted a fairly amusing story about him being covered by a snow tsunami as a plow drove past him. Minutes later I heard him telling the same story in the same way to the table next to us. I felt cheap and used. I retract my fake laughs. All in all, good experience.

The French Hound by far does lunch the best. I often take my out of town guests here, as they love the charm of Middleburg. Food is always fresh and flavor is paramount. The pizza and salad options are always a safe bet, but you can't go wrong with anything. I've had some excellent dinners as well, but will say dinner sometimes seems overpriced and you get a better value at lunch.

The French Hound is a quaint but fun French restaurant just off of Washington Street in downtown Middleburg. Featuring fine French Cuisine, Chef John Burkitt demonstrates the lessons he has learned from Southern Provence, and tells the diners his tale of technique through traditional French dishes that are prepared to perfection. The restuarant is separated into about four or five dining areas and features about twenty five tables at a time. Though the dim lights and candlelight try to prove otherwise, the restuarant can prove to be just a tad noisy at some points as the tables are relatively close together. While most spots within the restaurant are fine, I reccomend avoiding the two booths in the back, as there is heavy service traffic for waiters in that area. Though a Leesburg native chef, you would not know it coming from the kitchen. All food prepared by Chef Burkitt was excellent. I recommend for starters the French Onion soup. Though prepared traditionally, the baguettes are toasted before added to the thick onion broth, providing a texture that few restaurants can provide. I've had French onion soup dozens of times before, and Chef Burkitt informs us that this is how it is done. I couldn't agree more. I also reccomend the Duck, if available on the menu. Nothing says French cuisine like Duck, and in this case it was prepared perfectly and to taste (I recommend medium-rare). The portion sizes were perfect, and the vegetables were as fresh as being picked from the farm that morning. Another reccomendation would be the "Les Pates", a gernelli pasta with chichen, mushrooms, prociutto, and asparagus that blended flavors beautifully. Be sure to save room for dessert. The "Tarte Tatin", an apple tart with fresh vanilla ice cream is a definitely lighter, yet delicious way to end the meal. But if you wish for a heavier sweeter desert, I also reccomend the the ice cream sandwich, which features fresh pastry, dollops of ice cream, and warm hot fudge on top. Both are definitely a treat. The French Hound also hosts a unique wine list, and the staff is well informed of proper pairings for each dish. Finally, the service. The waitress we had the French Hound was very attentive and informed. The reccomendations that she gave me and my fiance were most helpful in making the meal a success. I was also pleased with her wine reccomendations through out the course of the meal. The French Hound may be one of many fine restaurants featured in the Middleburg area, but its cuisine makes it stand out from the rest of the pack. Chef John Burkitt succeeds in bringing its diners back to the world of fine French Cuisine without overembellishing his dishes. From the service to the delicious food, The French Hound gives its diners the genuine feel of a French Bistro, an experience that few restaurants have achieved.

I've been to this restaurant twice and I'm not sure if I'll go back. Both visits were during Brunch, which is a notoriously lax time for many restaurants (the head chef is usually never in the kitchen, the menu is more limited), so perhaps I am only getting a limited view of their offerings. My first visit was actually pretty good. Maybe it's because I had a Groupon, maybe its because I'd just left a tasting at a nearby vineyard and was straight up tipsy. We ordered snacks to start with: the lamb sausages with spicy aioli, as well as the salami with "strong little pickles". Both tasted good, though the portions were shockingly small. (But at $3-$4 each, what can you expect?) The lamb sausages were served swimming in aioli; we probably received a single 3" sliced link of sausage with damn near a cup of aioli. That's way too much fancy mayo! We ended up dipping the salami and pickles in it, which also tasted good. For entrees we chose the scallops and risotto, along with the chorizo pizza. The scallops dish was fantastic, and I strongly suggest that seafood lovers try it. Cooked to carmelized sweetness, the scallops are perfectly paired with creamy risotto mixed with herbed butter and topped with gorgeous greens. Maybe it was endive? Either way, mix it all up together and dig in. The chorizo pizza left something to be desired for me - the chorizo was sliced pepperoni thin while the pizza itself had far too much cheese on it. It looked a little cheap. The taste was fine, though chorizo is such a fantastic sausage that thicker slices would have been better, especially when competing with all that cheese. Our second visit was entirely on our own dime, which is definitely the desired result of offering a 50% off Groupon, right? Well it wasn't so awesome. We actually ended up ordering all the same stuff, except this time we skipped the pizza and ordered the Poisson. Unfortunately, we were expecting a small hen, but instead we got some kind of deep-fried white fish. I wish the menu had been more clear (or maybe I should brush up on my French?). The bummer about the dish was that it was swimming in oil, and even if its olive oil, it can still be a little gross. By the time the dish was finished, the plate was green with oil, and my partner wasn't very pleased. All in all, what the restaurant has going for it is that it is a reasonably priced and lovely looking establishment, refreshing when you consider how expensive and somewhat dated everything else is in Middleburg. There is no red velvet anywhere in the establishment, the decor is classic and airy, and that is very uncommon considering the gaudiness of the area. It's a town of rich retirees, and the French Hound is probably where the young people go. Another disappointment was the ambivalence with which the staff responded to our input - we weren't offered any incentives to return after commenting on receiving greasy food or finding a string in my greens. Perhaps we were too understanding about it, but even if a customer doesn't demand a new entree, you should at least give them a discount or comp it. Also, there are only about 6 wines on their HUGE wine list that can be ordered by the glass. In vineyard country, you've got to be kidding me. Had I felt that our input was given a second though or care, I would consider visiting this establishment again. Instead I will probably drive to Orlean and have a fantastic BBQ sandwich for $6.50.

Tried this place last weekend and I have to say...amazing! The bread and the pomme frites were perfect, the wine list is wonderful, the staff also top notch! Very relaxed atmosphere and just really good food and great prices. I'll take this over L'auberge Chez Francois any day!

Everyone we know loves this place. Over the past two years we've been there three times and the food is always "meh". It's not bad, just not great, especially for the price. I'd rather do The Red Fox Inn or Girasole in The Plains.

My wife and I are fairly regular diners here. Over the past 2 1/2 years we have not had anywhere near a bad meal. We've been there on busy nights and not-so busy nights; lunch and dinner. The bottom line: the food is always of high quality ingredients with attention to detail. The menu is 'safe' but there are occasional glimpses of Chef John's wild side. Recommendations: Steak w/Frites for entree, House Brined Olives for 'snack' or pre-appetizer. The wine list is creative, reasonable, and always accompanied by recommendations of Marny or Eric the server.

By far the classiest restaurant I have ever gone to. I took my girlfriend here for valentines day. I scored major points with her to say the least. The decor is beautiful the service was excellent and the food was out of this world. we started off with a glass of bordeaux and an appetizer of pretzels and some hot dijon mustard. A simple but delicious one at that. I got the flat Iron steak steak frites that was so tender it could have been cut with a spoon. My girlfriend got a pasta dish that I can't recall the name of but was pretty good none the least. The bill came out to be about $90 but a meal as good as that and a occasion so special can't have a price put on it. Will definetly be coming back again

My husband and I had dinner at The Hound one Saturday this July. Ambiance is nice, nothing too fancy. Menu is slightly uninspired. The famous French onion soup is only available in the winter months so we opted for a gazpacho and tomato/mozz salad. He had some chicken dish and I had a paella (not very French I know). It was OK.

I am so glad I finally dined here! The French Hound had been on my list to try for a couple of years so I made it a goal to scratch it from that list this weekend. My dinner date and I dined at the bar, both ordering the Steak Frites. The steak was cooked perfectly and was topped with a very flavorful compound butter. The fries were crisp & well seasoned. The bartender was very friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. My favorite part of the evening though was the excellent selection of wines by the glass. It was so refreshing not to see the usual lineup of wines. I had a fabulous Rioja with dinner. The bartender then suggested I try the Ramsey North Coast Pinot Noir which was fantastic, especially considering the price. Added bonus - the restaurant also owns a wine shop around the corner so I was able to buy a few bottles of these great new finds the next day. I foresee becoming a regular at both The French Hound and The Wine Cellar!

The food is incredible. Lobster pot pie (hommard) - a circle of puff pastry in the midst of fragrant, lobster tasting creme sauce with peas and little pieces of lobster. Need I say more? Staff is very nice. Cons: VERY small waiting area in front. Can be quite crowded with more than four or five people in there. Prices are high, although it is Middleburg, which is sort of par for the course there. My hommard was $16. They seemed slammed on Saturday around 2 pm when we were there. It took a decent amount of time to be served, but we had a large group of 13 (which we did have a reservation for, and which they accommodated graciously with a few days' notice because Red Fox Inn canceled our reservation with them last minute because they booked a wedding reception), and when we were finally served, the food was excellent and plated beautifully. What's worth having is worth waiting for, in my humble opinion. My husband, the heretic, had pizza. Yes. Pizza, in a French restaurant. Sigh. But he loved it, so all's well that ends well, I suppose.

My wife and I had an enjoyable lunch today (Thurs.). The ambience was pleasant and as always the service was good. Our lunch included the following: gin martini - A-; glass of malbec (Cigar Box) - A-; arugula salad - B (bland dressing); mixed green salad - B (bland dressing); pate sandwich - B-; steak - B+ (very small portion); french fries - A; french bread - A. The bread and the fries were fantastic. We had a restaurant.com coupon for $25; otherwise, this place is pricey for what you get. I would like to give it 3.5 stars.

My fiance and I ate at the French Hound on Valentine's Day. I had the olives to snack on (yummy), then we both had the amazing French onion soup. The baguettes in the soup had a sligt crunch, which was a great surprise because the croutons are usually all soggy. Our main courses were outstanding. I had the "Les Pates" which was gemelli pasta with chicken, mushrooms, prociutto, and asparagus, and my fiance had the duck breast. We finished with an apple tart a la mode and some pastry-ice cream sandwiches- both so amazing. I had some napa Valley Chardonnay (very good) and the waitress reccommended a Cabernet to go with the duck, which paired well. Very yummy meal, although we were full to bursting when we left! Definitely worth it.

Absolutely loved this place. Would definitely go back. The menu was so eclectic with so much variety. Great wine list too. The service was impeccable. My wife and I had the short rib and the rockfish and both were cooked to perfection. The "snacks" portion of the menu is sort of tapas style with a great selection. The lamb bites were not to be believed. The overall decor was warm and cozy. A great restaurant overall.

My husband and I were attending a seminar about "Lameness in Horses" in Leesburg at Virginia Tech's Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center and decided to have an early dinner in Middleburg since we were out that way. The French Hound is lovely, quaint, warm and friendly and service is excellent. We enjoyed two lovely dinners and I must say my duck was excellent! Everything was plated beautifully. For dessert we ordered the chocolate mousse and asked that some framboises liqueur please be dripped on top. They were happy to accommodate that request. The owner came to the table to chat. We found that we had may friends in common. Our server had lived in DC so we all swapped our restaurant favorites. We plan to go back for lunch, after riding. Our barn is only 20 minutes away. Enjoy the serenity of country life. Kick back and relax--have a friendly and enjoyable meal in beautiful Middleburg!
