Went a number if times on vacation. The staff were always very friendly. They were slightly inconsistent in what came with various menu items but it was always in providing extra free food rather than lacking in quality. The recommendations we received were spot on. The food was exactly what you would expect when walking into the place.

Stopped in for a late lunch on a very busy Saturday. Great menu, food was very good as were the prices. The staff was extremely busy but handled it well and still managed to be friendly while keeping up with all the customers. Nice place to stop with the family while visiting the local attractions.

We've stopped by a few times and the food is pretty good. Service is hit or miss. There were times we were seated and were able to order shortly after and then there were times it took 20-30 minutes even when there were only a few tables seated. They do have some items on the menu that no other place around does. Sometimes the food comes out cold, missing an item or after a long wait but overall it's fairly good. If the service level were to improve I'd give more stars.

Uncle Bucks is definitely one of the most dependable eateries on Main St, not too far away from the Caverns. Very consistent food. I have had lunch here more than a couple of times and every time it was a great experience. Here are some of things that I have enjoyed here and would definitely recommend. Baby back ribs: Very well done rack of ribs. They were not fall off the bone as I like em, but still good enough. The layer of BBQ sauce was not overwhelming. The meat was soft and the fries were not heavy or greasy. Slightly overpriced as compared to other items listed on their menu. But not a bad meal at all. Rainbow trout: Very light and flaky, this came as a duo of fillets. Seasoned very well, the fish was definitely not frozen. The sides - you have an option to pick any 2. The bowl of sweet corn was probably a mistake I would avoid the next time but it was not a deal breaker. The fish itself was the best part and we do not regret having it. Go for the standard sides which are likely to be made fresh rather than coming out of a can. Fish fry seafood basket: Probably my favorite. The big fillet of haddock was fried with not so heavy a coating. The accompaniments in the form of coleslaw, tartar sauce and the cocktail sauce were great options, Especially the cocktail sauce was pungent and with a kick, The fries were great and this really came in a basket. Corn bread muffins: These come out as compliments of the house. Very fresh and very moist. The apple butter that came with it was absolutely the icing of the southern touch. Great service: I did feel I was in south although I feel VA has a very mixed identity and do not consider it essentially south. Still it is south of the Mason-D line, so it kind of is. And Uncle Bucks clearly had that on display. As I said, quite reliable lunch place that does not disappoint. 3.75 stars.

Avoid at all costs! We visited this "southern diner" after a rigorous hike in the Shenandoah mountains. Sure we saw that the place was busy but the waiters looked busy so we assumed the kitchen was busy too. First, we waited 15 minutes! for anyone to take our drinks orders. Then we waited nearly an hour for our food. Nothing exquisite, everything was from their own specials menu. They messed up our order twice! No apologies whatsoever. If our kid wasn't so hungry and exhausted, we would've demanded to see the owner. When the food finally came out, it was so stale and barely hot. We paid and left.

Breakfast all day! Yay!!!! This place was exactly what I expected in a small town Virginia diner. Large menu with lots of local-inspired dishes and variety. Look closely at their menu and you will see many unusual surprises. Went here on the last day of my vacation and was craving breakfast for dinner. If I'd known about this place earlier, I would have eaten there several times during my trip. I ordered the buckwheat pancakes -- fluffy and delicious. My boyfriend ordered the biscuits and gravy (not sausage gravy, for those who don't eat pork). We were both very satisfied with the food, service and ambiance. Great place! I will definitely go back next time I visit!

My husband and I came in for dinner. We were seated in a quiet area near the bar. The service was excellent and the food was very good also (steak and veggies). We will be back if ever we are visiting again.

We had a good dinner at Uncle Buck's this evening. The trout was very good. They serve breakfast all day, so two of my daughters got chocolate chip pancakes. They were huge, loaded with chocolate chips, and delicious. One serving could've easily been shared by the two of them. My wife had three sides for her entrée: Mac and cheese, baked sweet potato and apple sauce. The mac & cheese was homemade and delicious. My mother-in-law had the stuffed mushrooms and said they were the best she ever tasted. I had a seafood combo platter comprised of fried shrimp, crab cake, and fried oysters. The fried shrimp were fantastic, but the oysters were a bit fishy tasting. The air conditioning was too cold, but otherwise the atmosphere was very nice. Everyone agreed we would definitely eat here again.

If your visiting luray save yourself a lot of pain and just eat here. Great food great service. We had the real hash, western omelet, sausage and gravy. Tasty and hot. Just one complaint. Pick a thicker better tasting bacon. Charge more, your only as good as your bacon. Make your own.

Awsome place to grab a bite to eat. The food was good and the service was quick and very helpful. The place was clean and had plenty of seating also.

Unfortunately I can't comment on the food. We were seated and that's about it. We waited and waited but no one ever came over to say hello or even get our drink order. However the party that came in after us was attended to w/in minutes of their arrival. I tried to make eye contact with the 2 employees to get their attention but it was like I was invisible. They just continued to zip by without even glancing at us. So we left. If someone would've at least acknowledged our existence & said "I'll be right with you", I could've tolerated the slow service. But I will not give my money to people who flat out ignore us.

Let's start with the Burger. It was pretty good. Asked for medium well but the waitress said it's all pretty much cooked well done. What? Guess customer is not always right. Finished my drink and waitress walked by at least 5 times before asking for a refill. I guess it was more of a test to see if the 10 wait after her saying I'll be right with you was going to be the norm....it was. Food was OK but not the way I wanted it cooked and they seem to be more interested in us when we left our seat so it could be filled. The woman who covered the front desk said she would be right with us. Reason? She was busing our table so the couple who came in behind us could be seated. Also heard about the corn break muffins. Never got any at our table. We were just tourist and treated that way. I think this is off the list for us.

Great breakfast! I had Redneck Benedict (biscuit, sausage, eggs, gravy and cheese). The place is smokey if offered bar area, it is VA. Wife had country fried steak and loved it as well. Friendly staff, efficient place, even with crowds.

Service was great and food was delicious. The complimentary mini corn muffins with apple butter hit the spot. We went there for breakfast and the kids were very pleased with their huge waffles and whipped cream. My omelette was delicious and filling. We've been here for dinner a few years ago. Next time around, we'll stop in for lunch!

Took a trip to Luray for a weekend getaway. VCU had a conference tournament game that day and the staff was very helpful (even checked to ensure they had the channel for the game when we called.) They took our reservation and put the game on two tvs. The food was good, the service was excellent. Excellent selection of beers! The only downside was the hostess seemed to be having a bad day. Most importantly, the Rams won!

The service here is great and our server was super sweet. The food was good although it didn't knock my socks off. I had the Wranch Wrap and my bf had the Crispy Chicken Wrap. Both were pretty good. I'm knocking down a star bc the decor is a bit of a bummer and the windows and floors are unappetizingly dirty. Otherwise it's a great place to go especially after checking out the Luray Caverns!

DO NOT STOP HERE! My boyfriend and I visited Uncle Bucks after hiking 15 miles at Shenandoah earlier in the day. We stopped here on our way to the Days Inn in Luray. I checked the reviews prior and it seemed like a decent place to go. This place is FILTHY. There were piles of food and dirt that had been swept into a pile but not picked up at my feet and when I went to the bathroom, the trash had not been taken out in days. Our waitress was nice enough but it did not make up for the almost 90 minute wait for our food. The ribs were terrible but the Mac n' Cheese was decent. Meanwhile, during our 90 minute wait for food, 4 staff members stood at the front reception desk celebrating one of their birthdays. I wish I wasn't so hungry or I would have left within the first 5 minutes but not being familiar with the town, I held onto hope that when my ribs came out they would be the best I ever had. I don't know how this place got so many good reviews but you could not pay me to step foot in this place again, its a great candidate for food networks resteraunt impossible.

Visited Uncle Buck's after a very long day. I enjoyed the rustic ambiance and loved their fried fish and chips.

The food was reasonably priced. Some of our food came out cold and had to be reheated, but besides that it was okay. This is located across the street from the movie theater, so it would be convenient if you were seeing a movie.

  • Deborah B.

People are nice.. atmosphere not very cozy, kind of sterile.. very messy floors during a not so busy time.. corn fritters were nothing special... Very quiet, echoes.. dirty glass had to be returned.. steak and cheese was flavorless, overcooked and full of fat. Fries were overcooked. Mashed potatoes were dry and tasted like dirt. Chicken fried chicken tasted like a frozen patty and the gravy was super thin. Fried green tomatoes seemed over-battered and overcooked. We did not enjoy our dinner or the stomach ache after. It's possible we just ordered the two worst items on the menu. IMHO, I'd steer clear of this place unless you get a recommendation for a specific item.

  • Allen M.

Simply sub par. I have had some excellent luck with places like this in the past. Generally when your out in the country they know how to make decent gravy, sausage, the works....this place falls flat, with bad biscuits to boot.

This place was a pleasant surprise. I had the Uncle Buck's burger, and you literally are able to put in anything you want on it - the fries that come on the side are crispy and battered. Their special, the roast beef on white bread, all covered with mashed potatoes and gravy, was great and comforting. However, it didn't come out piping hot and was actually a bit on the colder side. The service was friendly and great, and the price didn't throw you back either. +french fries +roast beef (ask for it to be extra hot!)

Stopped here after the Caverns. Ran into some locals who must not like tourists. The staff was VERY friendly. We were seated immediately, got drinks and orders in quickly. For a party of 7 the food came quickly, about 15 minutes. Their specialty salad dressing (warm bacon honey mustard) was great. Mac and Cheese tasted home made. Reuben and BLT were also great! Laid back atmosphere and nice views of the mountains. We will be back.

Stopped by because we were starving after horseback riding in Stanley. They were unusually busy for a Thursday because of the Soccer World Cup being on, so the staff was stretched a bit thin, but everyone was friendly. Food was very reasonably priced and tasty; I had the French dip sandwich and my boyfriend chose the steak sandwich. Both were yummy and hit the spot. If I come out this way again, I'd be very willing to eat here.

I'm giving this 5 stars because there is literally two bars worth going to in this town and this one is actually pretty cool. This one has very friendly staff and great service.... As well they changed the tvs to a game we wanted to watch (when the other bar couldn't even get the game on fox). And they gave me the wifi password so I could get some teacher grading done on my vaca... Awesome! We only got apps but the corn fritters were awesome and the quesadilla was pretty yummy but standard. Seems to be a local bar... Staff knows local's orders by heart and have cool banter back and forth, but they make out of towners feel very welcome. For a town that doesn't have much by way of bars... If you want to catch a game and get a drink this is where I would go.

We were up in Luray for a wedding over the weekend and ended up coming here every day for breakfast/brunch. The restaurant is steadily busy, you might have to wait just a bit to grab a seat. They have a bar on one side of the restaurant, so I assume their night business is popular too. The service was very friendly, the lady who served us always stopped to chat us up during the course of our meal and joke around with us. The food was extremely cheap and tasty. Some of us ordered two different dishes because the price was so low. There aren't many healthy options on the menu other than salad and the food can be very greasy, but if you are on the hunt for a good diner, look no further than Uncle Bucks. I sampled a bit of everything and was satisfied with everything that I ate. I would definitely recommend this place and come back if I'm in the area.

I'm stunned by the bad-tepid reviews. I've been here many times, and find this among the best diners ever (and I've been to well over a hundred). Part of those reviews might be from ordering the "fancy" items that you can't reasonable expect a small town diner to do well. All the breakfast food is outstanding. The chipped beer or sausage gravy over home fries is the best that can be had. Add a little Tabasco and I was in heaven. The bar is wonderful. Live music, funky cocktails (including Jerry Garcia, which is green and tastes of herbs ;}), and a surprisingly hip crowd. Don't miss it.

Outstanding service!!!! Loved the Local Trout and eggs with biscuits and gravy and grits. Yum yum. Atmosphere fun and charming. You could easily put on a few extra pounds eating here every morning.

Friendly place. Great specials. Food was great!! Nice relaxing spot. Was open for dinner. Serves breakfast all day, but opted for the prime rib and shrimp. Family friendly menu.

Maybe it's the heat in my office, but I'm rounding down from 3.5 today rather than up (but I reserve the right to revisit and round up later of course). Luray has a lot of little places to eat, but we were surprised at how few options we had for Mother's Day breakfast. Weended up at Uncle Buck's and it was a perfectly fine small-town restaurant experience. Despite being the only place in town for people to take Mom out to breakfast, they were handling the crowd well; we didn't have to wait for a table, our waitress was friendly, and the food and coffee came quickly. As far as the food went; as much as I wanted to try the Redneck Benedict (sausage, biscuit, scrambled eggs, and gravy), I opted for the lighter Uncle Buck's BLT instead (a BLT with a scrambled egg). That ended up being a wise choice, not that I have any reason to doubt that the Redneck Benedict would have been good, because it turned out to be exactly the lighter breakfast that I was looking for. Overall our food was what you would expect from a small town restaurant like this; basic, filling, and cheap.

PROS: Food was incredibly good. Decent portions. CONS: daughter (and most others) were freezing. Fans and A/C bone cold. Also, took forever to get food but did hear they were down a cook. Overall 5 stars for taste but not so many for service, speed, and comfort

I think my favorite thing about this place...is the name. This is a nice place to stop and have lunch after visiting the Luray Caverns if you're down that way....I wouldn't drive from Old Town Alexandria to Uncle Bucks but you get the idea. Came in - got seated quickly- ambiance is very homey like if your grandma had tables of strangers eating in her living room instead of her couch and tv. The food was ok- I had a burger and the man had a sandwich. It was OK like I was full, it wasnt expensive, and didn't make me sick but I wouldnt make a special trip for this place alone. The waitress was very sweet- and attentive.

Service wasn't anything special. Sandwiches and burgers were pretty bad. My grilled onion on my burger wasn't grilled mushrooms were from a can. Not lettuce tomato or anything else on the burger or sandwich. We also had pulled pork and ribs they were better. Carolina BBQ was not Carolina BBQ.

My boyfriend and I went here to try something new while exploring Luray. We love trying restaurants that may look a little divey in hopes to find that hidden delicious gem. In this case, I'm not impressed. My boyfriend, however, really enjoyed the food and compared it to home cooked. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms, the honey chicken wrap, the wranch wrap, the French onion soup and cheesecake. Service was good. The mushrooms were a bit dry for me, they cost $9 and there were only three of them. They were STUFFED with crab meat. My bf doesn't like crab but really liked the mushrooms. I found too many shells in mine to enjoy them. The soup had good flavor but hardly any broth and over half of it was croutons. Cheese wasn't very melted. The wraps were wraps. You can't really screw that up. When asked for dessert I asked the waitress if they make anything in house, she said no. Everything comes frozen...blah. But the cheesecake was good even though it probably came from the Costco frozen dept. Nutshell: average food from an average town. My bf wanted to give them 4 stars, but I think that should be reserved for places that are truly exceptional.

I've been to the bar side many times, and it's great! Friendly bar tenders, nice dive bar atmosphere, and decent bar food. I was definitely happy when they went from being a smoking bar to a non-smoking bar. I will say that the portion sizes can be disappointing depending on what you get. I went to brunch here once and thought it was really good. Food tasted good and the service was prompt. No issues with portion sizes when it came to brunch.

Every dish was undercooked. Couldn't believe breakfast dishes could be undercooked, even the home fries were raw tasting. Very disappointed.

Uncle Buck's has a 'southern diner' kind of feel to it. On the one side is the main resteraunt, & the other is the bar area. The bar is myself & my girlfriends place to go for a girls night out. Bar is clean, good atmosphere, & good to just hang out & drink with some of your friends. Bartenders are so nice & make awesome drinks! If you want a good drink...I recomend the 'redneck zombie'! Food is always yummy! I don't think I've ever ate here & not liked what I ordered. My favorite to order is the Ranch Wrap & if your ordering an appetizer...you must have the corn fritters!

I know what you're thinking right now because I did the same: "Well, there are some negative reviews about wait time and poor customer service but there are others that are pretty decent, so maybe we should give this place a shot?" Stop right there. Don't do it. My husband, 3-year-old daughter, and I stopped in to Uncle Buck's on a Sunday at noon for some late brunch/lunch after a weekend of camping in Shenandoah. Our food was not finally served until approximately 1:05 pm, and that was only after our periodic requests for food status. When we initially walked in, we were immediately seated in a booth. While the servers seemed busy, there were a few empty tables, so it certainly wasn't full. The server took about 10+ minutes to finally make her way to our table. In fairness, she was apologetic about taking a long time to make it to our table. We told her it was fine (we were fine passing the time chatting about our trip and the area). We ordered as soon as she came over given we had sufficient time to consider what we wanted. And then we waited (note that we had a three year old with us... so waiting is challenging enough). 30 minutes go by, and I'm beginning to get a little impatient because we ordered only eggs (how hard is that?). I look over and see another family seated around the time of us also looking a little annoyed/wondering where their order was. I finish my cup of coffee, and I get no refill. I stop the hostess who was walking by given I hadn't seen the server in ages and inquired about our food. She said she'd check. The server finally comes over and fills our coffee. She bluntly said that the food was "coming right out." (no apology) This was at approximately 12:50 pm -- once we were already about 50 minutes in from first being seated. We wait some more. My husband and I decide that once 1 pm hits, and we still see no food, we're leaving. We're really hungry at this point, and most importantly, our daughter is getting very impatient and hungry. At 1 pm, we walk to the hostess stand (still no food or server) and tell her that there is still no food. The hostess, a young 20-something year old woman, responds: "It's supposed to be coming right out." To which we respond: "Yes, that's what we were told about 10 minutes ago, and we're leaving. We just want to pay for our drinks." She responds: "I'll go check." She returns a few minutes later and says, "Your food's on the table now." No apology. No - "Hey, I'm really sorry your food took over an hour... here, we'll comp some of your meal." I told her that we're pretty reasonable people, but it is frustrating that she was completely unapologetic. She shrugged. We offered to pay for drinks, and (at least!) they said that would be covered. We ultimately went to the Artisan's Grill, where we were quickly served lunch (they even brought out apple sauce and crackers for our daughter while we waited for our order) even though nearly all of their tables were full. We will never again return to Uncle Buck's. I would note that our experience with Uncle Buck's was the first time we ever walked out of a restaurant before our food arrived. We understand people and restaurants get busy, but seriously -- if your kitchen can't keep up with a 2/3 full restaurant, maybe you need more cooks.

I'll be honest. I'm a Jersey girl and I was in search of some legit Southern eats while in Luray. The name "Uncle Bucks" is what lured me into this restaurant. The service was great and the food even better. My crispy chicken wrap was tender and just the right size. The chicken quesadilla app was flawless. Yes, yes. This Northerner got what she wanted out of the stop. I'd recommend.

I think i'm being somewhat kind with the 2 stars. After checking out Luray Caverns, we decided to go into town to see what kind of eats we could find. After getting tipped off by a local to go here, our family was quickly seated. We ordered up the corn fritters, which while they didn't look like much, were great, though some better presentation would have helped. They were just a small pile of these little fried corn fritters on a white plate. No complaints, just a thought :) Here's where the fun began. After ordering our sandwiches, my wife and i ordered the kids food. Basic chicken tenders and fries. After about 15 minutes, the kids food comes out. After another 15, I start wondering what the deal is, and after another 10 minutes, a different waitress stops by and drops off the check! I had to stop her and get her up to speed. She quickly ran to the back of the kitchen, and guess what, came out with our food. The mediocre food was not enough to warrant the wait, and after all this, the new waitress proceeded come back with the check, no discounts, no regrets or apologies. The funny part was when our original server was peering around the corner, hanging and shaking his head. Not positive, but i'm pretty sure we'll not be heading back to Uncle Bucks anytime soon. The kids had a good time though, there was a lot of interesting horse racing relics and display items. Good times.

Yes, I would return. The breakfast is a choice of basic eggs, waffles with fruit and grits or fancier fare. Inexpensive The decor is great, horses and riding gear.. A small simple building in the middle of town.No extra AAA,AARP, Military discounts given or required.

Stopped by for lunch after visiting the Caverns. I ordered the hot turkey sandwich. Two slices of white bread with 2 thin slices of turkey loaf grilled on one side to warm it up, covered in gravy. Very disappointing. If you go, order a salad.

Delicious dinner! Hubby had the honey dipped chicken and omg when I tasted it I wanted his plate! I had the chicken fried steak and it was so good I put it as 3rd on my list...also fried apples and Mac n cheese are awesome too. The only thing I did not care about was the wait to be seated and they were not that busy...seems the bar is the hangout spot lol

  • Lee S.

We were warned of the long wait but figured we'd try it anyway. We waited for close to an hour to get our food and it wasn't good enough to have made it worth it. We both ordered the trout with eggs. The trout didn't taste the freshest and the eggs and potatoes were almost tasteless which is hard to do. I used the jam packets for my toast (something I ever do) and that was the best part of the meal. I normally write reviews for great and not great. This was definitely not great. I wouldn't go back. A local took us the next day to the restaurant in the Best Western and it was wonderful. Delicious, inexpensive and friendly service. Will go back for breakfast tomorrow.

Maybe breakfast is tasty but dinner was not. First we tried the corn fritters based on another yelp review, but they were not very good... pretty bland. I had the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and fried green tomatoes. It was edible... but that is about the nicest thing I can say about it. The chicken fried chicken was like anything you can buy in the frozen food section of the grocery store. The mashed potatoes were OK, and the fried green tomatoes were mostly breading. Perhaps we just came at a bad time?

This place was great. Deserves more than 3 stars. The staff was really friendly and polite; which I love. Our order came out promptly and everything we got tasted delicious. The decor is a little outdated but I don't mind that as long as the food is good. If I ever vacation in luray again I will def be eating here!!!

I was passing through Luray after a rainy night of camping near the river. It was great to be inside, warm, and welcomed. It's a little diner which feels like it's been there for ages. The service was fast and friendly. The menu was standard breakfast, I wasn't given a lunch or dinner menu, so I can't speak to that. I had eggs and sausage with toast. It was all very good, nothing spectacular, but good. I would stop here again for sure.

Got seated fast. Then began the wait! Took 10 minutes for our waitress came by to take our drink order. Drinks came out in a reasonable amount of time. We ordered ordered the cheesy crab as an appetizer. I ordered chicken livers with mashed potatoes and gravy and buttered corn. My daughter got the creamy potato soup and a grilled cheese. My girlfriend ordered the vegetable plate, green beans mashed potatoes with gravy and Mac and cheese. She also wanted corn on the cob but they were out. The cheesy crab took 25 minutes to come out abd it was horrible. Plain bread with crab from a package slapped on it with cheese on it then thrown in the oven. Bread was soggy and the crab tasted fishy. Not worth $3 let alone 7.50. Our food took an hour and 10 minutes to come out. The server said that they were swamped but the restaurant was less then half full. Chicken livers were dry mashed potatoes were cold. Potato soup was good but the grilled cheese was cold and the chips were stale. The green beans were good Mac and cheese was cold and bland with no flavor and the potatoes were cold. Our server was never around and we were always out of drinks and it was like pulling teeth to get them refilled. We will never go there again.

We came in here for lunch after our turn at Luray Caverns. As it was a weekday, it was not crowded in the least. The food was good overall, and the fish basket was great. I had a burger, which was passable but could have used a little more char on it. The kids got chicken fingers and chicken wings, both of which were good as well. I'd love to come back here for breakfast.

Uncle Buck's should have been at 4. I had every intention of giving this place one until the very end of our breakfast there. Initially, we stopped in on a Saturday night to grab a menu to look over for Sunday morning. The hostess who handed me the menu must have been very friendly and smiling, because I noticed and was impressed. This is usually not the case in DC, unfortunately. We returned Sunday morning, and a waitress scrambled to find us a seat in the restaurant, but there were a quite a few tables that hadn't been cleaned off yet. It wasn't a big deal, because they probably just got over a breakfast rush, but we did stand in the middle of the dining room awkwardly for about a minute. While standing there, one of the workers poked his head out from the kitchen door into the dining room wearing a bright green afro wig for St. Patrick's Day, and this made a group of elderly folks giggle, which made me love the place more. Upon being seated, our waitress got our orders. I went with coffee (they had Irish Cream for St. Patrick's Day!) and the Buckshot (BLT with egg), and my husband ordered the crab omelette with grits and toast. The pricing seemed very cheap. I believe my Buckshot was $4.75. It tasted delicious! I kind of wished it came with a side of potatoes/hashbrowns or something, but I suppose I could've ordered that on the side. My husband thought his crab omelette was pretty good, but didn't care for his grits. We don't normally eat a lot of grits, though. I got up to use the restroom, and the same friendly hostess from the night before was sitting in the back and read my mind that I was looking for them, and directed me. Even when paying our bill, she was very helpful in giving us directions to Luray Caverns. While we're on the topic of the bathroom, it was a little scary. When someone in the adjacent bathroom flushed their toilet, mine bubbled and made a loud noise. Thankfully, I was only washing my hands at the time... Okay, now why Uncle Buck's isn't a 4. Our waitress did a great job getting our order. After that, we never really saw her again. She never checked in on us, never refilled our coffee, and we waited over 20 minutes to get our bill. She even noticed 5 minutes in, and said she would be right back with it. I had to ask her again at 15 minutes in, and then, we still didn't get until at least 20 minutes in. It was awful. I haven't received service that bad in a long time, and I live in DC... I was really disappointed after the hostess having been an exceptional staff member there. I've waited tables before for six years, and I know that things can get busy during breakfast rushes, but if someone asks you for something multiple times (and you only have five to six tables), it shouldn't take over 20 minutes. I really, really loved this place, but this was a big disappointment for us. Other than that, we enjoyed the food. It's a pretty low-key, casual place - a small town diner where you probably find a lot of the locals. Hopefully, our service was an anomaly.

Breakfast was good enough. Good service. It is really hard to screw up breakfast so I typically don't go too crazy on the rating. It was cold outside, but warm in the building. I didn't really care for the horses decor, but it did like catching the morning news with a hot cup of coffee

We had breakfast two days in a roll while visiting Shenandoah National Park. My husband loved the scrapple. It was quite tasty - crunch on the outside and moist inside. I wished that we had more than 2 thin slices. The Local Favorite with two trout filet was a very good value for the amount of fish. I also liked the Virginia Gentleman with a slice of country ham...a bit salty but great with the fried cubed potatoes. My boys also loved the regular and chocolate chip pancakes. The only disappointing item was the grits. It was lumpy and tasteless. Instead of grits, get the cube potatoes instead. It's homemade tater tots. Overall, this is a good restaurant for casual family eating while you visit Luray.

Uncle Bucks is a nice alternative from the touristy food option trappings offered along the strip by Luray Caverns. Located in the heart of the downtown area, this decent sit-down restaurant is family-friendly and offers comfort food in Southern style! It offers all the usual suspects of fried mushrooms, fried chicken, fried green tomatoes and other non-fried options too!

Good diner food in a clean family-friendly environment. A little noisy, but that's to be expected! My husband had the chicken livers which were perfectly cooked and I had an excellent Reuben sandwich. Good service, too. We'll probably visit Uncle Buck's next time we're in Luray. Good food for not a lot of money.

A little country-style coffee shop/diner with excellent food at reasonable prices. If anything NEGATIVE can be said, it is that the portions are a little large. We had breakfast here and my bacon and eggs were world-class, whatever that is. Good service and friendly people. They have a nice selection of t-shirts, in blazing tie-dye colors, printed with their logo on the front and "IT'S HARD TO BEAT UNCLE BUCK'S MEAT" in large black letters on the reverse--classy. Fortunately the shirts are also available with just the logo, in tank and t-shirt styles. The perfect "Look at Me- I'm a tourist !" garb for visiting the nearby Luray Caverns.

As soon as we walked in the door, we were greeted with the question, "Smoking or non-smoking?" I thought that cannot be a good sign. Wrong I was! This friendly place has delicious home-style food at very reasonable prices. Our waitress was also very helpful and professional. We tried the Redneck Benedict and the Local Favorite (rainbow trout with eggs) and they were yummy. The coffee was strong and fresh. The biscuit (even though not made on premises) was hot and fluffy. And the Belgian waffle was delicious without a single toping. The decor is interesting. Lots of pictures of horses - very nice!

My husband and I were hoping to experience a "Diner, Drive-ins, and Dives" moment a la Guy Fieiri. Unfortunately, this place is just a plain dive. We went for breakfast on the 4th of July. There seemed to be one waitress working the entire place who kept telling us how a cook didn't show up. We waited over 30 minutes for pancakes and an omelet. The pancakes were average at best, but my husband's hash browns tasted like they had been dropped on the floor.

Food was delicious southern cuisine. Service was a bit slow; however, we were in a rush, so I'm sure I wouldn't have noticed otherwise. Good selection of southern classics and some pleasant surprises on the menu, too. We're from out of town, but plan on returning to Buck's next time we're in Luray!

My friends and I came here in search of brunch after Luray Caverns, it was a good decision. Service was slow, but I get the impression they were short staffed and this is not a systemic problem, still, it cost them a star in my book. I got the chocolate chip pancakes and home fries, both were very good, highly recommend. Very low price, especially considering what we were used to, being city slickers and all.

One waitress for a packed Sunday morning... Terrible service... Friendly but terrible, couldn't get a coffee refill. Had corned beef hash. Asked for it to be well done or crispy , was neither. Potatoes were soft, soggy and greasy. The corned beef wasn't hash but large chunks. Had a side order of biscuits and gravy, awful. Biscuits were stale and hard, and the gravy was nasty, tasty gritty and floury, clearly didn't cook the rue long enough, was like bland paste. Go somewhere else.

My wife and I had dinner there after Uncle Buck's was recommended by both the Luray Museum and the desk clerk at our motel. We both had the Fish Fry, a nice haddock filet fries and coleslaw. Best fried fish we've had in years. Went back the next morning for breakfast and we both had their "Redneck Benedict", a very tasty and filling plate of a biscuit with sausage, eggs and gravy plus home fries. Great food, friendly waitresses, and great prices. We'd definitely go back and gladly recommend Uncle Buck's.

As New Englanders finding Uncle Bucks during a road trip to visit some family in the area was fantastic. We enjoy looking for the place off the beaten path and this is certainly that place. Our visit was on St.Pattys day so we anticipated having a larger crowd at basically the only restaurant/bar in town however we quickly found that the celebration level is not the same as back in our Boston area. We enjoyed a great meal consisting of a crab cake sandwich which was served with french fries and a chipotle sauce I had the country fried steak with home made mashed potatoes and gravy. Both dishes were great! The only thing I would say about Uncle Bucks is don't expect anything fancy behind the bar for liquor options, they pretty much have "well" liquors and a handful of draft beers. The place was clean and staff was very friendly. We would recommend to anyone looking for some local flair while in the area.

Luray may offer a variety of places to dine for lunch and dinner, but for an early breakfast after a night of camping in Shenandoah, you're going to find yourself here. We did twice, actually - once for breakfast, and once for dinner the night before. The dinner we had the evening before definitely didn't make me look forward to the breakfast the next morning, but it was either Uncle Buck's or the gas station, since even the bakery nearby wasn't open on Sunday morning. Dinner was burgers that tasted like uninspiring frozen patties. Breakfast was standard eggs and whatever (I think hash browns for me). All in all, the most memorable experience was the race-horse motif and the question of being asked if we wanted smoking or non-smoking (having lived in DC for a long time, I forgot that question existed in other parts of the country). For the quality of the food, the prices aren't quite cheap enough.

After touring the caverns we found Uncle Bucks on a rainy weekday afternoon. Decor Old, Clean so so, food super good and inexpensive I had the Jersey Ruben which is a ruben with coleslaw melts in your mouth, wife had the chili VERY VERY Good!!! and the grilled chicken salad which was fresh and huge. We with with my mom and dad on this trip and they had the veg soup and a grilled ham and cheese both they enjoyed the total for the 4 of us with soda etc. was $33.00 and quality was $50.00+ the service was a little slow as all was made to order but thats tolerable next time we come up to see the fall colors we will have to visit again!

  • Jack R.

I like this place. I have been here three times and never experienced some of the things that a few yelpers have complained of. As a side note to that, I notice that the negative reviews invariably come from the "city folk" who seem to stray a little too far from their latte bars and expensively priced "status" patronages. The staff have always been courteous and helpful. I like trying different dishes when I come, and I have found the food to hit the spot each time. Definitely a place to stop for a while when in Luray, unless of course you'd rather pay for all the overhead of a more chic boutique eatery.

  • Jim L.

Not bad for Luray, but I expected a cool little country place to have much better flavored food. The meat and eggs are obviously farm fresh and have that kind of plain taste. The biscuits and gravy were nothing to rave over, but my standards are high since I have spent a lot of time in the south where breakfast restaurants are defined by the quality of their homemade biscuits. Uncle Ben's has Texas Pete, so the bland food can be brought back to life. Again, not bad for Luray.

This is a four star family friendly place with decent food at decent prices. I'd actually give 3.5 overall but that's not an option and they are definitely worthy of more than 3. If you have kids or just need simple food of decent quality, Buck's get the job done.

We came here for an early dinner after spending the afternoon at Luray Caverns. They have decent food. Our party had rainbow trout with fried green tomatoes, a cheeseburger with fries, and a fried shrimp basket. The bill for four (without alcohol) was $55.00, including tip. Unlike most Luray restaurants, they are open on Sunday.

sliding scale.... ate there again this last Saturday. Later in the day...3 ish. I ordered the same trout I had before but the crab stuffing was different. It was very spicy, which I usually like, but the spice was heavy handed on the flavor of the crab and there was more stuffing than crab. The trout was perfectly cooked and not a bone in sight, but peas were cold and the mashed potatos were cold and gluey. Almost as if they had waited on the side for the trout to be cooked. And finally, the reason I give it only 2 stars...and maybe it is a petty reason..but they served beef gravy with the meal. luckily I had it on the side, but really, beef gravy with fish???? eeeeyuyyouu.... Server was very busy, but managed a happy smile and good service considering the place was full. She also accomodated my odd menu request with a good nature ( I don't like wet foods to drip into each other, so I like things in little bowls if they are soggy.) .

Worst "dining" experience in memory. I had to put "dining" in quotes because we never got around to eating there. We were seated within 5 minutes (a short wait for them to clear the tables), I liked that their TVs had the World Cup on, and the waitress was friendly and brought out our drinks quickly. BUT, when we got there, the tables were full with most of the tables still waiting for their food. That should have been a sign, but optimistic as always, I decided to wait it out rather than drive to another place. When we asked about the wait (really, the hostess and waitress should have told us before we sat down and ordered), the waitress told us it'd probably be a 30 minute wait for food to come out but probably less if we didn't order a meat or entree--so we just ordered eggs, potatoes, and toast. Fast forward to 40 minutes later and still no food. Not even a bread basket while we waited. And at this point, 90% of the other tables were in our same position. The waitress at that point, knowing we were concerned about how long it would take, told us that our food would be out in 15 minutes. A couple of minutes later, an employee (manager? waitress?) comes over and tells, "We're going to need your table." Kind of matter of factly stated. She didn't ask us, "Are you finished?" From her tone, she seemed to assume that we were just killing time and loitering after eating and now she wanted to kick us out. A really rude and odd encounter as I can't imagine this happening in any other restaurant. We told her we hadn't even been served after 45 minutes (how was this not obvious to *anyone* who worked in that restaurant that day? Almost every table had been waiting for their food for 30+ minutes). She disappeared to go check. We were so annoyed and frustrated that we got up and left. I told the cashier that we'd like our coffee on the house since we'd waited for 45 minutes for our food. She obliged (but even if she hadn't, I wouldn't have paid a cent anyway). Two seconds after I walk out the door, they come out to tell me our food's finally out. TOO LATE! We were in a pretty sour mood by then. Forty-five minutes for a meal that should have taken 10 minutes, tops, maybe 20 if the restaurant is slammed, is unbearable-especially when combined with an employee who wants us to give up our table before we've been served. It might have been Father's Day weekend (we went on Sunday 6/20/10), but that's no excuse at all for being asked to leave our table and definitely no excuse to keep seating customers when you KNOW that the kitchen is severely backed up. We drove to Front Royal and ate there instead.

I am writing this based on our experience with service. We left after about 20 minutes of no menu and no drinks. Actually, we were give breakfast menus, and when we realized this, I flagged down a waitress, and ten minutes later was given a lunch menu. After another while waiting for service, and then watching the waitress step on a beetle right next to our table, we decided to get up and walk out. We are glad we did, because the coffee shop and cafe across the street had great service and delicious food, in a much cleaner and nicer atmosphere.

Definitely good old fashioned southern food. Biscuits and gravy for breakfast, yep. I almost wish I was man enough to wear a fanny pack because I would have stuffed it full of gravy and ate out of it all day long. Awesome for breakfast and exactly what you would expect with a name like Uncle Bucks (minus John Candy).

We were in Luray for three nights and all three mornings we came to Uncle Buck's for breakfast. Seriously. We decided if you find a good breakfast place for a vacation where you are doing lots of hiking through the snow, you stick with it. Amongst the foods ordered were the "Fieldhand" (aka biscuits and gravy), the "Virginia Gentleman" (Virginia ham with eggs and sides and a random glass of juice), the "Local Favorite" (rainbow trout with eggs and sides) and the Ribeye breakfast (forgot the name). The sausage gravy was so delicious, we ordered sides of it on the days where one of us did not get biscuits and gravy (I know, we should have the cardiologist on speed dial). It tasted great with the pan-fried potatoes. The Virginia ham was excellent, and we took the waitresses recommendation on where to get some to take home (the stoplight before the supermarket, turn left until you get to the Fairview Grocery) and the eggs were cooked perfectly to ordered. The biscuit was flaky and warm and not too dense. The only miss for me was the trout, which I ventured to try our last day there. I wanted something different and something local and figured the fish was it. It was a bit fishy tasting, which my husband told me after the fact is common to trout, and not to my liking. However, it was cooked well and deboned perfectly. I should also mention that none of our entrees went above $10. In fact, most were around $5-6. The mugs of coffee are HUGE. Service was attentive and friendly. I think it helped that we were there during the off-season--it was only locals, who all seemed familiar with the staff. Hopefully after three breakfasts, these friendly people could consider us somewhat local!

This might be 3 and a half stars just for food, but taking into consideration value and service, I put it at 4. We went for a early lunch, and older daughter wanted pancakes so everyone was happy. Meals included a stack of *huge* pancakes, pulled pork sandwich with great coleslaw (tasted fresh and sweet), PB&J, club sandwich and a Belgian waffle. All the food was good. BBQ and club sandwich especially so. Negatives included faux butter, syrup that had never seen a maple tree and pancakes from a mix. Service was prompt and friendly and the total bill for five people before tip was $30. Everyone was happy with their food. Can't go wrong with those results.

Stopped in for supper after touring the caverns. Six of us, four adults and two kids. The waitress wrote everything down, but something was wrong with four of the six meals...which they corrected, but if you wrote it all down, you shouldn't have gotten in wrong in the first place. Their prime rib was unlike any other prime rib I've ever seen...not sure what cut of meat it was, but it wasn't prime rib. BBQ ribs were tough and chewy...had to gnaw the meat off the bone. Fried chicken I could've gotten just as good at any convenience store along the way. Took forever to get the one drink refill that we were able to get out of her. For the rest of the trip when someone asked "where do you wanna go eat?" the running answer became "anywhere except Uncle Buck's".

We were in Luray for a Bluegrass festival and was looking for some comfort food. The menu was extensive and we had a hard time choosing what we wanted for dinner. We had high hopes. I ordered chicken fried steak and my girl ordered tandoori grilled vegetable. When the food came out her vegetables were anything but grilled. They were soft. I believe they took steamed or better yet boiled to death vegetables and dusted it with tandoori seasoning. My chicken fried steak looked like a crispy flatten cow pie. It was very very crispy and hard to cut. My vegetables were cooked so much they were dehydrated. We both couldn't help but laugh! We tried to make the most of it and left wishing we had just gone to McDonalds. We looked at other plates around us and realized it probably didn't matter what we order. We left in a daze.

I'm a girl from the Pacific Northwest, so I don't know too much about southern culture, but the accents, food, and hospitality on display at Uncle Buck's were exactly what I was looking for in a local restaurant. We went for breakfast and were extremely impressed with the price. My steak was very flavorful and cooked how I ordered it. The over-easy eggs were absolutely perfect, and I enjoyed their homefries -- simple, salty, and delicious. I had a biscuit but unfortunately its flavor was overpowered by the "buttery spread" I smothered all over it; next time I'll definitely leave it off. I also tried scrapple for the first time. It was not as bad as I expected, if that tells you anything. My boyfriend, who'd eaten it sometimes growing up, thought it was "good, pretty standard," (he's not much of a talker). His biscuits and gravy were "delicious... not quite homemade, but that's not a fair standard to hold them to." He thought the grits were pretty plain, and was satisfied overall. The decor was amusing to me: cowboy hats and saddles all over the walls. It seemed a little over the top, but I sat back, embraced the kitsch, and even enjoyed the country music. I'd go back if I ever found myself in Luray again.

I couldn't pass this place up, because I love the 1989 John Candy movie of the same name so much. Also, because the lady's blood sugar was getting low. It seems a pretty local place, a friendly regular said us a hello as he arrived, and the waitresses greeted him by name and asked if he'd have his usual. Anyway, there we were in Luray for late lunch, and there was Shocktop on tap, so I was happy. And if the food came a little slow, the waitress was friendly and funny enough to make up for it. We, frankly, were annoying customers. She sent her first drink back (with good reason -- it was terrible) to get a very satisfactory replacement. We both ordered our entrees off-menu. Spaghetti with a crapton of butter and cheese for she, a patty-melt with BACON for me. They were pretty good. Also the mozzarella sticks were very, very good. I'd stop here again if I was in town, hopefully to try breakfast.

Mixed feelings about this place. I had a very good rib-eye, but the green beans overcooked and mushy. They were probably not fresh. A decent choice for wholesome food, but they are operating in the last century.

We came in here for lunch after visiting Luray Caverns. It was not crowded for a weekday. The food was good overall. The fried mushrooms and fritters were tasy, and the beef chili had a mild spicy kick that was good for both the male and female palettes. Food prices were very reasonable, especially given the quality.

Sup virginia locals. We dig your country kitchen thing. Food was opposite of disappointing.Stayed in Luray for the weekend and was looking for a good breakfast. Prices are low and very good quality food. Chicken pot pie 4 stars!!! CORN FRITTERS!!. I have not lived before having those fried balls of sweet corn goodness. Eggs and service was lovely and basic. Not a large selection on the menu but some good choices. The host and waitress was friendly and service was fast! One complaint is my coffee cup had a gross stained film inside to the point I could scratch it off. We give u five stars bc we want your average to go up!!! 2 1/2 stars is too low. It's more like 3 1/2 to 4 due to decent food, low prices and friendly staff.

My rating is solely for the service, or should I say, the lack thereof. I never got to eat so I can't talk about the food. I stopped by today around 11-1115 AM. It was steady but far from packed. No one was waiting to sit when I arrived. I asked for a table where I could spread out the paper I was carrying as I was alone. The hostess said she'd be right with me as it appeared she needed to clean off a table. I sat while she waited on numerous people that decided to check out at the same time. No one came over to help and she called no one over. After a considerable wait another couple came in and asked something about a particular waitress. The hostess let them go ahead of me and take a window table I would have loved to have. Okay, I'm not a local and it appears they cater to them. I finally got a table and sat with the menu. It was a breakfast menu and I wanted a lunch one. After at least 5 minutes a server asked if I wanted a drink. I did. It finally arrived along with the lunch menu. The server asked if I was ready to order and I said I needed ONE more minute. I was sure to annunciate the one very well as I could tell I would be waiting. After about 10 ONE minutes and watching my server, and others, go to tables with people that sat after me I decided I was done. I got up and started putting my jacket on and guess who came over. When I told her their service was horrible. They let people sit ahead of me while I was waiting and that getting service after I was seated was damn near impossible her response was "Okay" in a voice indicating she didn't care. I ride this was all the time and wanted a restaurant as a go to and this one had promise. Guess I'm back at my old standby Brookside off 211.

During the weekend of Feb 11-12, 2011, my family and I had the pleasure of eating two meals at Uncle Buck's. Each time the food was delicious and the atmosphere was homey. And the prices were VERY reasonable, which is high praise coming from a Scot. The service, however, was exceptional and we felt more like relatives than guests, which made our visits even more enjoyable. Our first server was a nice lady called Sule, if I spelt her name correctly, and she was outstanding in her commitment to our comfort. Needless to say, we will be visiting Uncle Buck each time we are near Luray. REC in Richmond

If you are looking for a great, big homestyle breakfast after exhausting yourself hiking in the Shenandoah National Park, this is it. Breakfasts are traditional and more than ample (read: huge). We ordered the "ranch hand," a pork chop, grits, baked apples and biscuit special which true to it's word, was big enough for a rancher. The food itself was well done - none of that excess grease which can often be characteristic of diner food - and well seasoned. The decor at Uncle Bucks is country style and seemed to be a truly local joint (few tourists) although I did go there slightly off season (late Nov).

No stars. Went for brunch on a Sunday morning. Service was so slow we left. We waited an hour and 10inutes for two egg sandwiches and all we got to show for it was a bill for the beverages. No communication from the wait staff, no coffee refills. Needless to say, we won't be back.

For a town that doesn't have much by way of bars... If you want to catch a game and get a drink this is where I would go.

  • Mike B.

    (4)

Breakfast was great! Friendly staff, clean and comfortable atmosphere, hearty good eats! We liked it so much the first visit, we went back the next day. Definitely worth a breakfast stop!

Breakfast was great if you like good home cooking. I would recommend the hardy bowl. Dinner was alright. One plus is they have a bar and if you're in Luray they seem in short demand.

This place was recommended at the caverns. Wasn't terrible, but the prices are too high for "eh" atmosphere, menu, quality and customer service.

Needless to say, we won't be back.

sounds like their breakfast is ok. we came here for lunch one day and it was pretty bad. mostly reheated food that i'm sure came from walmart. the people were super friendly, but the lunch food was sad. i'm a local here and i'm sorry to say, i'll never be returning. two stars for the friendly service.

Went a number if times on vacation. The staff were always very friendly. They were slightly inconsistent in what came with various menu items but it was always in providing extra free food rather than lacking in quality. The recommendations we received were spot on. The food was exactly what you would expect when walking into the place.

  • Kayla M.

  • Jeff W.

The food was reasonably priced. Some of our food came out cold and had to be reheated, but besides that it was okay. This is located across the street from the movie theater, so it would be convenient if you were seeing a movie.

  • Hannah H.

Went for breakfast, had the "Redneck Benedict" and it was everything that I could have hoped for. My wife had the "Real Hash" and it was very good too! Service was adequate. Food was great!
