Emily was our waitress! She was awesome and our rib-eyes were great USDA choice cooked too order. We enjoyed the evening except the kitchen was backed up which lost the fifth star

Food was amazing. Service was spectacular. I could not have been happier. We stopped here while on vacation because it looked quaint and the yelp reviews seem to be good. But I was so blown away with how nice the waitress was. If we lived closer this would totally be a regular spot for us.

After seeing all the pretty grazing cows by the side of the road, I was naturally in the mood for a good steak! Dan's did not disappoint. Delicious steak, not fancy but perfectly prepared (I had medium rare). And the coconut cream pie is one the best things I've ever had. Huge portions. Tasty fries. Just about everything else is only okay but the overall place is completely charming and the servers lovely. Seems like a place for locals. I highly recommend it as a stopover. Seriously good beef. (And pie.)

3.5 stars This is a great spot in a charming diner-style location. Food was fine. That's the short version. But everything is contextual. The fact is that there are not a lot of options in this area. Compared to what's available, Dan's steakhouse has both nice food and charm. The vegetables were fresh (most other places serve veggies from the can). The location was also fun - halfway up a hill, and the decor was charming. Folks were very friendly. If you come here with your expectations in check (ie - this is not Ruth Chris), you will walk away happily humming! I also agree with the other reviewer on the meat being undercooked. Be sure to cut into your meat before eating to ensure it's where you want it.

Travelled to Luray from Philly to spend a week in Shenandoah and stumbled upon Dan's Steakhouse. And boy I am glad I did. Dan's was among, if not the best, steak places I have ever eaten at. I got the Prime Rib and my wife the Filet. Both were awesome, and the Filet was particularly so. So were the baked potatoes. Wow. If you are in Luray, you simply must go to Dan's, and come hungry, the portions are huge.

We just had "dinner" there. Sirloin for two came out too rare. Sent it back, took forever. We had finished our salad and baked potato....still waited and waited some more. When it arrived, it was sooo well done, was not edible. Sent it all back. Waitress was marvelous. Terribly disappointed and left hungry.

This is a 2 star restaraunt in Atlanta - but we aren't in Atlanta - We are in Leray, Virginia, where there is almost no restaraunts. We had the "Sirloin for 2" and holy f'n crap would I like to meet the two individuals who can put that steak down. I have uploaded a picture for reference - It is every bit of the 2 lbs they say it is. So if you get the Sirloin for 2, be sure you have four people. Overall, the steaks were decent but just a bit overdone. The best thing I had was the sweet potato. Perfectly seasoned with cinnamon and not too much butter. The people were very nice and you could tell they wanted you to enjoy your meal.

I take exception to a few of the previous reviews. First, the guy who compared it to Ruth's Chris. That level of hyperbole is ridiculous. I ignored the entire review after reading that. I liked my dinner at Dan's, but there is no way to even compare this to Ruth's Chris. Second, the reviewers who went in and ordered cocktails. This is obviously a blue collar restaurant. The building is very old, and not maintained perfectly. The decor is roadside diner. Anyone who would walk into this place and order anything other than a beer deserves to be disappointed. They were obviously expecting something more upscale. That said, I think this is a pretty good blue collar steak house. It's location is pretty remote, but easy to find. Like I said, the building itself is very old, and looked even older. Floors and ceilings were thick plank wood paneling. Tables and chairs were equally old diner furniture. The place could use a serious update. The beer selection was good, although the only things on tap were cheap domestics. They have a good selection of kid's meals, and a decent selection of entrees as well, but I came for steak. I ordered the T-Bone, and wife had the filet. Both were undercooked, but not badly. The steak itself was a decent cut and the seasoning and flavor was great. Definitely good for the price, although if there was an Outback around, I would go there instead.

When you leave Luray Caverns... COME HERE! (that's what she said) This place by far was a great Mom and Pop steakhouse. These folks were very friendly and the food was just incredible. I can only speak for the NY Strip and T-Bones! Wow! Cooked to order and brought to you w/ your choice salad and baked potato. It seems this restaurant was built out of an old home, but it transitioned into a great atmosphere restaurant a.k.a. steakhouse. A great place to relax after your Luray Cavern hike. Take my word..I love steaks! This is your country-side Ruth Chris.

I am not quite sure where to begin, as this was the biggest disappoint throughout our entire vacation. My boyfriend and I decided to visit the Luray area for a Memorial Day trip. We love steak and I researched where we could eat beforehand. I was able to find Dan's Steak House and from the reviews I thought this place would be decent and at least some place for us to stop during our stay. Unfortunately, I was wrong and do wish we had opted on another restaurant. When you walk into the main dining area of Dan's you are greeted by bright florescent lights reminding you of your elementary school cafeteria. The restaurant has a cold and very unwelcoming feel. The staff sitting at the hostess stand seemed a little bothered by our presence, but on a plus side we got seated right away. Our server was fine and pleasant enough, she offered us drinks and we decided to order a cocktail. I ordered a sprite and vodka and my boyfriend ordered a gin and tonic. His gin and tonic resembled a ginger ale and it seemed that it could very well have been just that. There was no taste of gin or tonic. My sprite and vodka, was just sprite. The food was a whole other issue. We decided to order what "Dan's" was known for, which was the sirloin steak for two. When this sirloin came out, I was stunned. It was a very large, broiled piece of meat filled with fat, gristle, and bone. The steak lacked flavored and resembled something I could make in my own kitchen. The Caesar salad was made using store bought dressing and the bread was awfully dry biscuits. My boyfriend and I were tempted to leave without eating, but at the price for this "steak" we figured we should get a few bites in. Then to top it off on the way out I decided to use the ladies room. That was a mistake. The bathroom was lined with mold, in the sinks, on the floor, in the toilets. There were bugs on the floor and on the counter and everything had a nice thick layer of dust. Frankly, I was wishing we could have been warned about this place ahead of time, but unfortunately we were not. I would have liked our money back, but since that wasn't a viable option. I thought at the very least I could warn others. Do not come here. Don't be tempted by the name of "steak house". Go somewhere else. Trust me, take my mistake as your gain. I am sorry "Dan's Steak House", but if there was nothing going for you.

The mixed review was worrisome before I went. I can understand that now. There were 3 of us that ordered steaks, and 1 was undercooked a bit, 1 was slightly overcooked, and 1 was perfect. I had the one that was cooked properly, and it was absolutely fantastic. But consistency is an issue. The steak itself was great. The appetizer was delicious. The bar selection is poor though, especially the wine list, which is basically blank. Overall a great restaurant.

Great food, the men loved their steaks and us girls enjoyed our chicken. I also had a side of the mac n' cheese-delish! Dan's was decently priced and the waitstaff was very friendly considering we strolled in just before closing. Probably the best place to go if you are in Stanley!

The service left nothing to be desired. Everyone from the hostess to the waitress were warm, welcoming and hospitable. Very good. My girlfriend and I ended up getting the prime rib for two. The thing is huge. I have a bottomless stomach and even I was impressed. It was delicious; however, I will say one thing: A bit unevenly cooked. We asked for it to be cooked medium and there were areas that were a bit too red. You know, how it gets that semi-gelatinous look about it when it's undercooked. This was easily remedied, however. We were fairly stuffed by the time we got to that portion, so rather than sending it back, we just took it with us, reheated it later and were ready to go. I know that's rather unacceptable to a lot of people though; and usually would have been for myself, so it's something they'd certainly want to work on. In terms of sides, the spinach and artichoke dip was lovely, as were the hush puppies and french fries. The hush puppy order was rather small, however. I'd say that less than ten came in an order. It just seemed a bit minuscule. The dip wasn't that plentiful either, but it did the trick. The artichoke dip comes with tortilla chips. I would have preferred some sort of bread, but the tortilla chips were fine. I would return to this place, but I might just be a little more careful for how I order the prime rib. I have a feeling that if I ordered "medium rare"; that would bring it a little closer to "medium". I know it's a bit of a pain and one shouldn't have to make such accommodations for the people cooking the food but hey...people are allowed to make mistakes.

We have been to Dan's twice (or both times we went to Luray Caverns). Dan's is a tradition in the area where you are hard pressed to find chain-restaurants. Order the steak for two. You will not leave hungry or disappointed. It's grilled to order. I, unlike my husband, like my steak not mooing. They cooked the steak to his liking, brought it to the table, I sliced off my portion and they took it back to finish cooking it. The kids steak was a generous size too as were the other kids' meals. The waitstaff takes the time to stop and chat (accustomed to tourist) and even gave us suggestions for what to do with our evening. Our glasses were kept full without asking.

Hit this place up on Memorial Day weekend and really liked it. We had a ribeye and prime rib which were outstanding. Friendly staff too!

Nice little steakhouse. A bit old-fashioned and locallized but as out-of-towners we still enjoyed great service and our meal.

My daughter and I visit Dan's every year during our annual pilgrimage to the Shenandoah Valley, and we love it every time. It gets 5 stars...because it is the perfect country steak house....delicious food, friendly staff, unpretentious decor....just what it purports to be.

Want a great meal in Luray? Take it from this out-of-towner, the best meals for your money is a stop here at Dan's Steakhouse. Wowza! As a girl who can appreciate a good steak, I was more than full after a large meal at Dan's. With all my favorite fixings on the side as well as sweet tea, this girl went home happy knowing she did not break the bank to do it. A juicy and perfectly cooked steak, even made it for a second meal the next day. My family also enjoyed the whole fried chicken dinner which i swear was a whole chicken, cut and friend to perfection. Better than any deal you would get from some fast food joint, and just as juicy as something my grandmother would make. The staff is super nice and there was no wait for dinner. I was pleasantly pleased at the clean establishment as well as the abundance of food for the prices. So many different type of people dine in - from locals to out of towners- all made feel welcome like family. I was very happy to see everyone enjoying their meals and time out. Great family owned spot- a place you def want to support!!

Stopped here after a trip to the caverns. From arrival to leaving, very welcoming, friendly service. We opted for the sirloin dinner for two... And I'm not sure what two people they have in mind. Let me say you get your monies worth. Keep in mind this is a simple roadside diner, not a 4 or 5 star steakhouse. But it is clean, satisfying and hearty. Our salads were decent, the bread was warm, with generous butter, and the HUGE slab of steak brought for us to split (not what we expected) was indeed cooked to order. Probably will have leftovers. :) I would say this is a friendly generous place where you are far enough from the urban areas to start experiencing southern hospitality, portions and real sweet tea again. We enjoyed ourselves.

First time visiting the Luray, VA area and found Dan's while searching for some seafood. Turned out to be pretty good! The wife and I are both foodies spending years in Manhattan tasting wares of many cultures. We had the clams on the half shell for an appetizer and then tried the seafood pasta and the seafood combination. All of the seafood was fairly fresh, and cooked properly. The seasoning was a touch sodium heavy for health conscious eaters, but we still enjoyed the food! Our server was very polite, attentive and non-intrusive creating a nice dining experience. Seems to be a popular location for locals and it filled up rather quickly around dinner time on Saturday. Didn't actually try any steak, but as for some seafood offerings for those far away from the coast, it was a good experience. 5 stars would be reserved for amazing food experience. I give 4 due to good quality food, decent prices, and excellent service.
