There is a definite mom and pop feel to this deli! I read from other reviews to order the salty dog which has corned beef, pastrami and cheese (comes with lettuce, tomatoes, onion, mayo, hot peppers, oil and vinegar). They are very generous with the meat portions. Towards the end of my sandwich the meat started to spill out (this is never a bad thing!). The bread was soft and had a nice chewy texture - not sure if this is made in-house, I wanna say no? The meat was surprisingly not overly salty (despite the name) and was very thinly sliced! The deli meat was very soft and even though the lines of fat in the pastrami was apparent (not like a disgusting amount - i don't deal with animal fats too well) it didn't pull out other parts of the deli meat, which goes to show how tender and soft the deli meat really is. I am very excited to try some different things on their menu - particularly their hot sandwiches (:

Came here on a Friday night and it was dead. Couldn't decide what to get so I ordered the steak and cheese. Not a good idea. First, she just took bread and threw on some cheese, which I was thinking she'd warm it up. So it took about 5 minutes or so for my steak and cheese and my bf's hot sicilian sub. We sat down at one of the tables, I opened it and the bread was cold, steak had no flavor, I'm talking about not even salt and pepper. It was so bland and tasted like the steak in the frozen section you can get at Giant, except those are seasoned better. I'm pretty sure they just microwaved it. It was a disappointment because we drove 30 minutes to get there when we could have gone to Santini's down the street from my house. I didn't like the Hot Sicilian either, there wasn't enough meat. Maybe I have to come back and try their "fresh" deli meat and not a hot sub. But for the price and what I got...not sure if I want to go back anytime soon. The only thing good was they had Dirty Chips, which are my favorite chips so I ate that for dinner. I hope it was just a bad night!

Subs are amazing!! Loaded with meat. Very generous portions but it comes with a price. Sandwiches are around $7-$12 depending on the size but they are excellent. Very nice people who work there and I especially love the Redskins memorabilia inside. HTTR!!

I can't remember a time when The Deli wasn't my go-to lunch place in Herndon. The subs are very generous, and the ladies will make them however you like. The subs are big, with plenty of meat and fresh ingredients. Not fancy, but the crowds around lunch time tell you all you need to know.

Went to The Deli because of it's high ratings on Yelp and comparison to Italian Store so figured it was worth a try. I'm not too familiar with Herndon, so maybe this is a step above the norm in the area but it is definitely not a comparison to the Italian Store. The turkey and swiss was fine but the deli meat wasn't anything better than basic. I'd go here over a deli in an office building but wouldn't compare it to the best in the DC metro area.

If you think Subway just puts waaaayyyyy too much meat and cheese on their sandwiches, this place should be just right for you - although the quality of ingredients does not measure up to Subway. (This is sarcasm) I ordered an Italian combo hero and when I unwrapped it I could not believe how skinny and LAME it was... I de-constructed the "sandwich" and stacked all the meat and cheese on a single pile and it stacked up EXACTLY as high as 2 US quarters! Here is what their $9.00 sandwich contains: 2 transparently thin slices of provolone 2 transparently thin slices of mortadella (might have been standard balogna actually) 2 transparently thin slices of cooked salami 2 transparently thin slices of boiled ham. YUCK. Tip: If you want a LOT of extra hot peppers on your sandwich, just say "No hot peppers, please."

I felt the aggregate rating for this place really elevated my expectations. 4 stars on over 60 reviews?! It must be good. Not to mention it reminded me of one of my favorite places to eat back home, Italia Deli and Bakery in Agoura Hills, CA. Sadly, "The Deli" didn't live up to the lofty expectations I had set for it. The Good: -Good Value and Portions: I ordered the smaller, 8" sandwich for $7.95 and it wasn't a slouch on the portions. Granted there was a lot of bread in this sandwich, but I left very full and satisfied. Besides the bread there were large chunks of chicken and tons of peppers and mushrooms. Be aware they require a $9 minimum to use a credit card, so if you want just a sandwich bring cash, otherwise you will be having to buy a drink as well. The Meh: -Food: This is where it really counts and I felt a little let down here. I had the Chicken Parmigiana sandwich. Was it good? Yes. Was it great? Well...no. It tasted like something I could make at home, in fact when I saw them warm it up in the microwave that only confirm my abilities in making it myself. My chicken parm sandwich was a real let down, especially since I saw them put it in the microwave to warm it. However, due to how many people on yelp rave about the sandwiches, I want to give it another try sometime in the future.

the jump off for sure- If you work in herndon and are craving an Italian sub, go for this place. everything at this place screams Italian authenticity, and the soprano is to die for. definitely get the various peppers as well!

The best Italian deli shop in the area. Yes, I agree with the other reviewer, it's better than the Italian Store! I can't wait until the new location opens in Lansdowne. My personal favorite is the Mad Italian, but the other deli meat sandwiches are great as well. Dont forgrt the hot peppers! This is an Italian Deli shop, so do not go for a hot steak and cheese OR an eggplant parm (what are you thinking?). I also don't know what some reviewers are talking about saying the bread is not INCREDIBLE.. oh, that's right, they ordered the eggplant parm. Anyway, it's a great eat for lunch or a quick dinner. Stop in and enjoy.

Definitely my favorite meal in Herndon. Subs are expensive but they are so enormous that you still get your money's worth. Super Smokey is my go-to but everything I've gotten there has been delicious. Not much else to say, if you're looking for a huge sub this is the place to go.

    (5)
  • Julie C.

The mad Italian is the best Italian sandwich you will find in the area, and The Deli is the best deli you will find. The bread is soft with a nice texture, the meats are quality and piled on, service is fast and friendly. There is only one table so don't plan on eating there by its definitely worth a try if you are a sandwich lover

  • Steve L.

This is some pretty good stuff! The sandwiches are cheap, huge, and delicious! My Corned Beef sandwich was loaded with flavor I've not encountered in corned beef sandwiches before, and my fiancee's Veggie House sandwich was loaded up with mushrooms and artichokes - a totally fresh and unique style of veggie sub! The only complaint I have is that the white bread is pretty spongy. I'll definitely be back though.

  • Ryan M.

I went for lunch, it wasn't a huge place but wasn't packed. I ordered the Hog with everything on it and it was really good. The bread was soft with just the right amount of flavor. The meat was sliced in front of us and fresh. The portions are plenty, I generally don't leave leftovers but that day I took half the sandwich back with me. I will be visiting again.

Been back a couple more times since I wrote the last review - subs continue to be excellent! Went twice this week. First time I had the 8" Smoked Turkey sub, with provolone cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato, onions, and hot peppers - of course comes with a dill pickle spear, and a bottle of cold water. Second time - I had what I believe is called the 12" "Mad Italian." An Italian deli sub with at least four kinds of meat, mayo, lettuce, onion, tomato, hot peppers, and oil and vinegar, plus a bag of chips and a bottle of cold water. Both subs were excellent! And the sub bread was just outstanding! Love this place!

    (5)
  • Jenn K.

I really like Santinis but The Deli is even better. It has an authentic Italian vibe, an entire shelf of hot pepper products, and a wide variety of subs to choose from. You won't walk out of here hungry. The cold subs are huge, overstuffed with meat and toppings of your choice and come with a pickle spear. If you order right (not one with a custom name and splitting a huge 12" sub with a friend), it won't cost you much more than a sub at Subway and far, far superior. I've been here twice to the Herndon location and highly recommend it!

  • Mike R.

A-ok sub. Got the Italian Sub - $8 for large -Bread was good, but not crusty like my favorite kind of sub roll -Good amount of meat and toppings -Cheese was a little skimpy, but thats okay, I'm not a cheesehead. -Was big enough for at least 2 meals -- ate half on the spot and cut the other half into snack sized bites the next day. -All in all, would go again, but not every day or anything.

  • John G.

Not worth the high ratings given. He heated my sub up in a microwave. Also only condiments were mustard or mayo. Nothing else. Disappointed by yelpers on this one.

  • Wes T.

I grew up on "The Deli", they were a staple at summer gatherings, tail gates and pretty much anytime I needed a sub fix. If I go to a new sandwich shop I always get their Italian to see how it stacks up the "The Deli" and I have not found one that even comes close. I live in Austin, TX now and every time I go back I make a stop to get my fix. Absolutely the best Italian Sub you will ever eat, make sure to get everything on it, and don't take the pickle off the sub. Yes, I have eaten at the Italian Store, sorry, not as good as THE DELI.

I went here a few weeks back and forgot to post a review. The food was good and the portions could feed an army of sumo wrestlers (or 2 pot heads) Anyway, I enjoyed the place but it is not cheap. I think it might be the most expensive sandwich I have ever ordered. I did eat ti for 2 big meals with that being said. I will go here again for sure.

Sorry but not what I expected after reading several great reviews. It's just a typical deli located inside of a large office park bldg. to compare it to the Italian store is just plain wrong.

    (1)
  • Erica S.

While the decor is a little outdated...it feels like a traditional deli. The food is where it's at! Everything from the tuna salad to the pulled pork is delicious! The staff is always friendly, service is speedy and you can count on a good game on the TV at any hour.

My friend and I are on a mission to throw the best going-away party for our bestie and to do so, we need to find the best 5' Italian hero in Northern Virginia. We spent the afternoon taste testing at a few different places and to be honest, this one was just average. I'm from New York, so I have high standards, but there were other places that we tried that were just better. There was a lot of meat which was good, but it kind of seemed like too much and the dressing was par. The sandwich did have a bit of a kick to it, but still just didn't rank among the best. We were on a mission for subs today, but I did notice that they had a good selection of Italian goodies that looked delicious. Overall, this place is worth a shot and it will fill you up, but there are other places with better Italian subs.

Servings are large, prices are very reasonable, meat is tasty and the employees are super friendly. I visit this location and the Sterling location as often as possible.

    (5)
  • Sergey V.

Awful. Can't believe the reviews. Sandwiches are overpriced for what you get. The store looks charming but the sandwiches taste like dirty feet. Pick a better place. This place would not last a month in NY or even DC.

    (1)
  • Juicy G.

This is one of the best places to get a sub from. Though the cost is rather high ($12 or more for one sub), I have never felt ripped off, and am a fan of both their Herndon and Sterling locations. That's not to say that the place is perfect. For starts, while I love their cold subs, their hot subs are abosultely attrocious. Second, the Sterling location (not sure about Herndon store) closes at 7:00 PM. To me that's just plain stupid as this is right in the middle of your typical dinner time. If you're looking for a great cold sandwich, give this place a try. My personal favorites are the Budster and Super Salty Dog (Italian). Both of them come LOADED with meat. Thet also have some really great desserts.

    (4)
  • Gregory H.

Give me a super smokey with everything, including the kitchen sink, any day of the week! I've never had better sandwiches and subs as I've had at The Deli. I'd be willing to drive 2 hours out of my way to stop here and pick up lunch. Quality meats and quality fixin's. WORD!!!

  • Bob M.

I'm glad I ran across The Deli reviews in Yelp. I've been going to this place for years (my first Super Deli was in 1985 or 1986). This place has been consistently good throughout the years. Even when it had a change of ownership several years ago from the original Italian owner. In my mind, the original Super Deli Italian sub with a few hot peppers and extra oil and vinegar is the Bomb. Also, their deli meats and cheeses are excellent, but pricey. But, you pay for quality, not water injection like you get in the supermarkets nowadays. Go if you get a chance.

Good place! Locally-owned small business, good service, good food, and a quiet setting. I like it. Will definitely go again when I'm in the area.

I dont often go to this shopping center but when I do I am sure to pick up a sub from the Deli. I went there recently and got a Smokie sub which did not disappoint. I saw them making a huge party sub, so I may have to do that this football season.

  • Katie P.

Yelp- I love you for introducing me to The Deli. It's true love. Folks, this place is the real deal. Anytime my husband or I drive on Elden Street past the Kmart shopping center, we will stop in here for a sub. I usually go simple with a footlong smokey turkey with FRESH mozzarella, lettuce, tomato and mustard, but it tastes SO good and completely NOT simple. I die each time I take a bite. The best part is that it supplies two meals so I am enjoying my sub for two days. Score. The first time my husband went he got a steak and cheese which "wasn't the best he'd had". (One might call him a steak and cheese guy, so this doesn't surprise me one bit.) The next time he opted for a smoked turkey sub like mine and was not the least bit disappointed. He also tried Dirty BBQ chips which were so good! Not the cheapest joint in town, but it's definitely the best. Go.... I look forward to your five star review :)

This little Deli, appropriately name "THE DELI" is the best around. I work in Herndon and I seriously have a hard time not eating her every day! The best thing about this strip mall gem is the bread. For those that are serious about their bread, you will find nothing to complain about here. The bread is fresh and soft. And they're not shy about piling on the ingredients, meat included. If it's your first visit, or you're not from New York or Jersey, you might want to scope out the menu before you go in. This is a serious deli. The offer more than turkey, ham, and roast beef, so you're gonna want to know what you're in for before you order. If you're not familiar with: Capicola, Chorizo, Di Luzzo, Pancetta, Prosciutto, and Soppressata (and that's just the meats!) - make friends with Google before you order. No matter what you get, you will be more than pleased - you'll be full, pleased, and ready to come back. The sandwiches have fun names like The Hot Sicilian, The Mafioso, the Mad Italian, and the Salty Dog. It's a cute little place hidden in the strip mall next to K-Mart. Stop in and find your next favorite lunch spot!

Don't live anywhere near Arlington and can't get to the Italian Store? Don't fret, with The Deli sitting smack in the middle of Herndon, you won't miss it. I would love to have them do a side by side because I think The Deli would give TIS a big run for their money. The bread is fresh and to my knowledge, all soft rolls. The deli meat is fresh, cut perfectly and assembled into delightful sandwiches that will fill you up and make you happy in the tummy. It is always a big treat when someone from the office picks lunch up from here. also - like any good deli should - you can get fresh meat and other small grocery items here as well.

  • Kendra G.

This is a nice deli in the Herndon area that provides a nice selection of subs, soups, sandwhiches, etc. My co-worker got the chicken parmesan, he said he had better and it was ok. I had the smoked turkery and I was satisfied with my meal as well. The only con I have about this place is that they maybe understaffed, we came in around 1, there were only two ladies and there were long waits (we were there for about 20 minutes) and almost recieved the wrong order. So overall they have decent selections, subs are alright and they are a little slow on delivery

    (4)
  • Pooja K.

Great place food sure! I'm from Jersey and this is not as good as princetons hoagie Haven but still pretty great! Get your sandwich with hot peppers! Staff are nice and this 1 sandwich called "Smokey" seems to be the local fav ( ive heard every other person order it which is where my conclusion comes from.. and it wasnt even a special that day). Staff are spanish and super nice, def recommended :)

I hate traveling to DC but there are some really great food options to be found, this is one of those places! The Deli is a true deli, this ain't no Subway! Specialty meats and cheeses abound here are combined in various forms with spicy giardiniera, peppers, etc. I had the Roma 8" sub and it was fantastically good! Not a lot of seating but I'm sure most of the lunch crowd gets their order to go. If I'm ever back in the Herndon / DC area, I'll make this a lunch stop for sure!

perfect stop for our soccer tournament day. food is good. better than the chains, not as good as Italian store. they don't have hard rolls. bathroom needs work. overall good experience for what we needed.

  • Apple P.

Mmm Tasty! Everytime I go here, it always seems empty so I wonder how they stay in business? The shop is small, tucked away in the Kmart shopping center. I've gone during the weekends and dinner time and they're always pretty empty. But maybe they get their business during lunchtime from the nearby office workers? The Deli and the Mafioso are pretty good and the sandwiches are pretty big. The meats are fresh and you can taste it. They accept credit card and there's a few table and chairs for sitdowns. I pretty good place for some real good sandwiches.

The closest thing to a the Italian delis I grew up with in the Fairfax area! The service varies (and the people at their Fairfax location can be quite nasty) but the food is really yummy!

    (5)
  • Chris B.

This is the best Deli I have ever encountered. I have tried several different subs, but the Capri is head and shoulders above the others. If you like sweet or hot or plain, just do it...you won't be sorry.

  • Rin T.

Ok, close your eyes and dream about what the perfect cold cut sandwich would look and taste like, now go to The Deli in Herndon and order it! THEY HOOK IT UP! nuff said! Layers and layers of meat, the bread is perfect. They don't skimp you! So if you're a real man and want a real sandwich, go here, you won't be disappointed. I get the satly dogg, its beautiful. Get your sandwich with chips and a drink and you will be good to go. One other thing, its not really a sit-down place, so its more of a take out place, just so that you're warned. If you live about 25 min away, its worth the drive and take it home and crush it at home.

  • Brian V.

All the subs aredelicious and the service great! Definitely coming by here again!

  • Steve O.

Shame on me for never eating here before. I've never even noticed this placed in the years I've lived in Herndon. Well, not until I read about it on Yelp (it's in the Kmart shopping center btw). After I saw the positive ratings from other Yelpers, I thought it was worth a try. The sign outside does its best to detract attention but the quality of the subs will have me coming back again and again and again. Yes, it's that good. I ordered footlong "The Deli" - pretty much an Italian sub and was made perfectly. We also ordered a footlong tuna sub with hot peppers. Both were delicious. As with all great foods, the components must be fresh. That's definitely the case here. The meats were high quality and very fresh. The bread was soft and doesn't overwhelm the sub by any means. Having been to great sub shops in NY, NJ, and PHI, I think this does a great job upholding the same standards that they do. With a big bag of "Dirty" potato chips, the total was just under $20. Great deal for an excellent meal. I highly recommend this place.

  • Hannah D.

This place is awesome. The bread is good, the meat/cheese is perfection. I eat here whenever possible. The Hog? I think that's the name. Something w/ Hog in it, it's steller.

    (4)
  • Eric S.

A little pricey, but you get what you pay for; all the ingredients are super high quality (especially the bread), and they're not shy with the meat portions. My favorite is the Super Hog - roast beef, turkey, ham, and swiss with all the toppings - lettuce, tomato, hot peppers, seasoning, oil, and mayo. I'm just glad this place isn't close to my work, because I'd be going there every day.

3.5 stars I get the hype. It is very hard to find a good sandwich in NOVA. Don't get me wrong they do have a good product, but it wouldn't be the go to place in other areas. It is definitely a good location for them. The smoked turkey (comes with mayo onion lettuce tomato) add oil/ vinegar is pretty darn good, but not great

  • Sean B.

This Deli is one of the best ones I know in the area. When I want a good Italian sub in the DC area, I go here. Fortunately its a stone's throw from my house. The family gets things to go from here regularly, and have NEVER been disappointed -- well once, where they ran out of Egg Salad... I'll forgive them that. Older daughter loves "The Deli", where my wife and I usual get "The Italian Stallion". Excellent service, wonderful food.

  • Anson P.

I'm sure there are going to be those who are going to nit pick about the authenticity of the meat or bread compared to their New Jersey or New York sandwich shop but I gotta say that the sandwiches here are pretty tasty. I got myself a Roma which had prosciutto, some cheese I don't remember, and another meat I don't remember. Do I really care that I don't remember? Not so much. All I know is that I ate it and it was good. I also ate half a roast beef sub which was pretty good as well. They really load up the sub with meat and cheese, and the bread isn't too thick as to get in the way of meat enjoyment. Get them with everything on them including hot peppers. The place is pretty small and there are only three or four tables inside. This is located in the Kmart shopping center on the side with the Hard Times. I'll definitely be back to kill off two or three subs at a time.

    (5)
  • Jesse M.

I just got a Turkey Sub with mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and extra hot peppers for lunch. I have to say there are not many places in the herndon/reston area that can compete with The Deli when it comes to subs, especially considering the prices. Along with this 8" turkey sub, i got a vitamin water and it was only 8 dollars. I will definitely be coming back to try their other subs.

This is my favorite place to get cold Subs in Northern VA. Italian Store in Arlington is a close second. Places like subway/quiznos cant touch the Deli. My dad used to work in Herndon when redskins park used to be out here. He would occasionally bring home sandwiches from here, so I got my first taste @ early. I can tell you even to this day, the subs haven't changed. Still as meaty as ever and still as flavourful. I usually get my subs w/ everything. (you'll have to specifically say mayo if you also want mayo). I tend to avoid the sides since I had what tasted like some spoiled macaroni once. There is only like 4 chairs in the place, so carry out is usually the way to go. Staff is friendly and personable. They sometimes know what I'm going to get before I ask. Overall a great sandwich experience. This is one of the foodie landmarks not only in Herndon, but in all of Northern VA.

A place you probably wouldn't walk into for lunch.. unless someone recommended - definitely a hole in the wall, with a few booths for eating in the store dining. A group from our church went today for lunch - and the lunch was great. Sandwiches are big enough to easily share with your spouse - but we didn't - so leftovers for tomorrow. My wife order the "The Deli" - which had plenty of meat and good flavor. I had the Hot Italian with all the seasoning. I was a bit disappointed in the cannolli filling. The pastry was good but the filling was less than expected given the high quality taste of the sandwiches meat and cheeses. Our daughter with gluten alergies was able to order a salad with chicken. They were very friendly working with us to make sure the dressing was allergy free. We will definitely be back.

If the name was "The Italian Job," I think I would give it 4 stars, because this modest shop gave more than the promised authentic Italian-style sub with a name to match. If it had not thrown itself out there in the "all other" category with its prosaic title, it would not get knocked down a notch for presumptiveness. (The sign on the building smugly displayed an italicized "The" to empahsize its prestige.) That said, my adventure had just begun. The handmade Specials menu standing in the entry was a parody of credits from a "B" movie: the Hot Sicilian, the Mofioso, Milino, the Mad Italian, and so on. My bemusement must have invited intervention, because a departing customer - this Italianesque everyman - pointed out the trailing entry, named Capris, and grinned his approval. "You like it spicy?" came the greeting from behind the counter and I found myself suddenly engaged in a brisk specification that yielded one eight-inch sandwich, stuffed with sopresatta, capicolla, prosciutto, provolone, lettuce, tomatoes, sliced onions, peppers, and dressed with olive oil, vinegar, and a smear of mayo on a white sub bun, tightly packaged with a dill spear wedged in its crack. Whew! My belly burned and my head spun from its spicy naughtiness. I could not finish the entire thing, not even after spending some quality alone time with it in a corner of the break room at work. I vowed to return and left it there, beckoning on a pillow of potato chip crumbs, its oil soaked wrapper cast tauntingly aside. Surely my expensive Italian call-sandwich would not share itself with some passerby...

This has to be the sister store to "A deli" in Manassas, it just has to be. As others have stated great sub. I had the mafioso because I love procuitto and I ended up eating this over 2 days at work. I got the olive oil potato chips but with sea salt instead of rosemary which worked out nicely. Unfortunatly its $20 for an 11in sub, a bag of chips and a soda so its pricey but you definatly get enough to share.

  • Dave C.

Places like The Deli is why I use Yelp: to find hidden gems tucked away in the unlikeliest of locations! We visited for lunch today and - woah, man! - that was a worthwhile trip. I had the Mad Italian sub while the lady of the house had a bonkers veggie sub. Everything was absolutely delicious and, while $10 for a sub may seem a little expensive, 'tis nothing when you see the size of these "sandwiches". I could literally have made two more subs from the meat inside mine, and there were so many veggies in the other sub that we almost canceled our community farm deliveries for the year. Bonkers portions, but oh so good. For example, the mozzarella is fresh. Not just "fresh" but **fresh!** in the "The cheesemaker has just left the building" kind of way. Unless I have a very good reason (like, my kids are going to be eaten by aliens that talk like Walter Mondale and sing songs by Leo Sayer), I will not be eating at Subway, Quiznos, or anything like them ever again. No sir-ee. "The Deli" is a ballsy name. It's the definitive deli? Really? Yes, really.

    (5)
  • Jeff L.

Doesn't live up to the reviews. Go to Santini's in Reston for much better subs. I've been to The Deli a couple of times, and have yet to be impressed. Bought a roast beef sub today and there was barely any meat on it. I combined the 2 halves on one and it looked normal, but that made it $8 for half a sub. At least the roast beef is very pink, which is perfect. "A Deli" in Worldgate is also worth a try. Note to the owner ---- it's spelled "parmigiana", not "parmegiana". Mentioned to your staff, and they told me that was the English spelling. :)

Hello yummy! Huge rave for this place, although there's nowhere really to eat inside (ok there are two booths but let's be serious). Awesome hoagies, fast service. Really can't complain about much except that it's no Italian Store (damn Arlington for being an inconvenient drive), but it's still good as all get out. Try the mad italian or the il maestro!

For this area, you just don't find sandwiches like this. Granted, it's a little hard to find the first time, and it's rather pricey compared to some places, but this is absolutely no comparison to any chain, or even other delis nearby. I got the mafioso and a Boylan's birch beer (which has a special place in my heart from childhood). Man, is the sandwich big! As a warning, they do put all sorts of dressing/oil and vinegar (not sure which) on it so if you don't like it keep it off. It added to the overall effect though. I'll definitely go back if I want a treat for lunch and I'm ready to spend an extra buck.

I had the worst chicken parm sandwich of all time at The Deli. Of all time! The chicken was tough and dry, the souce without taste and the onions had the consistency of plastic. The hispanic women behind the counter kept arguing with me over how I wanted the sandwich. How hard is it to get it hot and change the cheese around? The decor is something out of a 1980's-13-year-old's-Redskin-fan motif, and the extra chips and 'italian' fare is nothing you can't fins at a well stocked grocery store. If this is the best sandwich Reston/herndon has to offer, I'm moving back to NY.

I had some doubts when I read the reviews for this place, that they can upstage my favorite Italian Store. But, I gave it a try - and indeed, the sandwiches are very good. I got the Mafioso, hold the mayo. The bread was excellent - like my favorite Amoroso's from Philly. The sandwich balance, though, wasn't the best, though I know many will disagree and say that the more the better. But I like that equal balance of meat and veggies, and this one was really meat-heavy. Next time, and I will definitely go back, I'm going to have them halve the meat and see if that works better on my palate. Beware, however, the prices are definitely higher than I would expect for a sandwich, but the quality is excellent.

Sandwiches come with plenty of meat, very hearty portions. This is a spot that you take out of towners too.

Sooo.. we have been down here for 9 years, and just discovered this gem.. We ordered subs to have for a luncheon before we trekked downtown to see a show, since we were planning on not eating dinner until 6pm. Since there were 7 of us meeting at our place, I ordered 8 different subs that everyone could just slice off whatever they wanted, and figured we would have late night snacks after the taxi ride back if need be. I have to say - all of them were just crazy good, and surprised all of us, who mutually appreciate a good sub. I think what stands out the most, is not only the bread that they use, but amount of meat that fills these babies.. They were substantial without being "too much", and the bread was perfect...chewy, soft, a little crusty... So we got the Salute - (tuna and salami is just genius), the Italian Stallion, The Mad Italian, the New Yorker and a couple each of the plain meats - turkey - roast beef. An option is to get fresh mozzarella on the sub, and I recommend heartily doing this. We did on a couple that were appropriate to do so. All deli meats are juicy and thinly sliced. Leftovers the next day were still great, which to me is the true test of a great sub.. no sogginess( but we always do store ours upside down to minimize that) and bread didn't dry out. I have eaten at a ton of delis and we have hoagie shops all over PA... this place is really up there in quality and quantity. I still have the challenge of finding a decent true Phili cheesesteak place, but this is at least a step in the right direction over all! Mangia, Mangia!!

I am officially a sub-lover now! Went to The Deli for the first time today. I ordered The Deli sub and my fiance ordered the Sopprano. They were both loaded with deliciousness. The peppers were hot and spicy in a good way. Service was fast and friendly. We are in love with this place! Incredible!

This was a great fresh Italian deli tucked away in the Herndon Kmart shopping center. I met a few friends there and everyone was happy with their sandwich. They were all HUGE and piled high with meat. There were several appealing sandwich options but they also provide the ability to build an a la carte sandwich however you want it. They had a nice selection of bottled drinks with some unusual options. My only complaint is that they did not have fresh basil...what's the point of having fresh mozzarella but not basil? The seating area is also very small (3 or 4 tables), I think it's intended more for take-out. This didn't bother me but it's worth noting if you intend to eat there. Otherwise it was great, I'll definitely go back!

the sub rolls are your basic generic soft rolls. not a good Italian roll. the turkey is not sliced to order but comes all most pulled apart in a big plastic bag not like a good boars head slices of turkey. and this turkey was full of water. when i went to eat it exactly 2 hrs later( it was in a cooler) the wet Turkey soaked into the already soft roll, what a mess. and no hot peppers liked i asked. So water soaked turkey, mushy sub roll, no peppers? in the trash.... i should have tried jimmy johns. and i did try jimmy johns. there you need to order extra meat like pot bellys to get almost a decent amount and WHOA whats with the mayo? i got a turkey sub dripping in mayo. and read their sandwich menu....allmost every sandwich has MAYO. MAYO, MAYO.

My family is originally from Jersey and we are hooked on Hoagies! When we found The Deli in Herndon we were ecstatic! Their "Super Deli" is fantastic! and i love the pickle in the middle, what a great ouch. They do a great job.

Back in the early 80s, my friends and I started going to The Deli for lunch. When I moved back to the area in 1988, I would drive from Alexandria to Herndon about once a month to get a Super Deli that I would eat for dinner and then lunch the next day. That should give you some idea of my history with this place. While it has undergone some changes since the early days, the basics are the same. You can get cold cuts and such, but the winners here are the sandwiches. The rolls are soft, the meat is plentiful, and it's all topped off with the usual suspects. You can get anything from a standard turkey sub up to their double-meat specials; just look at the board or ask! They do the basics well, but they do their specialty sandwiches better. There's limited seating (there used to be none), but there are nicer places nearby to eat, and a lot of their business is strictly carry-out anyway.

Really good sandwiches what else is there. I wish they had more seating but most customers take out.

Tired of the usual sandwich shops, a friend and I stopped by The Deli for Italian subs. We were surprised by the sheer number of subs they offered. For example, they offered at least four Italian subs with different meat and cheese combos, such as mortadella or prosciutto. We each chose one and enjoyed a hearty lunch. I can't yet speak to their ability to make a good hot sandwich.

  • Renee T.

The menu was confusing for me since I don't normally eat subs. I just picked the Mad Italian since one of the Yelpers said they ordered it. The sandwich was delicious, fresh, and full of meat. I went around 1pm on a weekday and there wasn't a long wait at all.

This place makes the BEST DAMN turkey and cheese hero in the DMV. Even without using Boar's Head meat, this joint can put a turkey and cheese hero together that will make you cry. Seriously. The key to a terrifc sandwich is excellent meat (and no pre-sliced, left-out-all-day-to-dry-out meat) and superb Italian bread (not airy, but with substance and a bit of crunch to the crust). I can't tell you how many airy, soft, dry-meat sandwiches I've had in this town. You won't find any of that mess at The Deli.

    (5)
  • Grace P.

This place is great! True deli style! I usually get the turkey on a roll with EVERYTHING including the peppers. Delicious! Another benefit, this place has chips galore. I try a different bag every time I go in there. Prices of the sub and range from $6 - $11 so beware, but it's definitely worth it!

  • Alli H.

It's a little pricey for a sandwich, but definitely worth it. Try one of their combination sandwiches--they don't list what's in them, but you can ask. The single-meat sandwiches are good, but how could you pass up the chance to have three different kinds of salami, two kinds of cheese, peppers, onions, and lettuce, or something equally seductive? They have an impressive deli selection, with all sorts of Italian delights, interesting sodas, and premium chip selections.

From the great reviews on here, I figured I'd go and check it out. It's true that it's really hard to spot, being in a shopping center with a small sign. When I entered, it was a lot smaller than I thought. There were only 3 booths (3-4ppl) and 2 small couple's booth. Sadly, they were all filled up. I glared at the menu and it was bit confusing. The first display actually had the word "sub" and "sandwich" followed by the names, but the others just had the meats/cheeses listed. I happily ordered a 'corned beef' sandwich. To my surprise it was actually a sub. Then the girl behind then counter asked, "L,T,Mayo, Onions, Hots?" At first I was baffled because I've never been asked something like that on a corned beef sandwich. I was hoping for the traditional corned beef, swiss, mustard and sauerkraut. They didn't have any sauerkrat and I was a bit misunderstood and shocked. I asked for swiss cheese because she said it comes with provolone. Turns out that swiss cheese was .79 more. That is not a corned beef sandwich!!! I opened the bag up and started to eat. No flavor whatsoever. It looked more like ham than corned beef. Everything was so bland and reminded me of eating at Subway. Sadly, I did not finish the sub. Skip this deli and head over to Panera right next door.

Another one of my favorite places in Herndon. When I used to work here back in 2001 - 2003, My weekday lunch routine would be, Charcoal Kabab, Deli, Pho, Cantina D'Italia, and then whatever I felt like between those four on Friday. Before I knew of this place, My manager who never went out for lunch used to quietly drive off and bring back one o their sandwiches. Roast beef with Swiss... And it looked quite good. So i decided to give it a try... From that moment on till now, I never had Roast beef with swiss sandwich that is as good as 'The Deli's...' SOOOO goood... it used to be one owner with two shops. He sold it to a bunch of people I think. and now someone else owns it... WHO CARES... THANK GAWD they kept the same provisioning... the meat and cheese are of the same taste as 10 years ago... just different owners... I have tried some other sandwiches from there. But i have cut down to TWO every time i visit. I don't care if it's JUST for me, or for my wife or whoever, i get AT LEAST TWO... a 12 inch roast beef with swiss and 12 inch DELI (italian). I think it's their bread that really separates them from others... it's very chewy and gooood...... i live in MD off of 270 now. But every time i am going to the airport, i stop by here for roast beef and deli. grab a bag of DIRTY jalapeno chips. and with some hot peppers on the side.... wow... i wish i was back in Herndon... I miss 'The Deli...'

I didn't think there was an Italian sub as good as the Italian Store's. I was wrong! The Deli's sub is equal, maybe even tastier! The basic Deli sub is eight inches with very generous meats and is well made, delicious, classic!

Top notch! My top three Italian sandwich shops in Northern VA are now The Italian Store (Arlington), The Italian Gourmet (Vienna), and The Deli (Herndon). Cheers

This is without a doubt the best deli sandwich in the area. It's a REAL deli with great cuts of meat and bread that's phenomenal as well. Do not even think for a second that some joint like Subway or Quiznos can even TOUCH "The Deli." The Deli kills ALL of them. EASY.

  • P K.

Sandwich's are gi-normous! Buried in the back of a shopping complex in Herndon, the Deli serves traditional Italian sandwich's. All the meats are top quality and stacked high. Place tends to be a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. Each sandwich tends to be 2 meals for me.

I was there for lunch and I ordered the Deli sub with potato salad. I liked both of them. Prices are reasonable, I spent around $10.00 for the sub, potato salad and a bottle of green tea. I will recommend this place for anybody who wants a cheap, fast and healthy food.

This place is great. I have been going there for 25 years. The sandwiches taste as good as they did 25 years ago. It's probably the best authentic italian tasting place around. They also give you a lot of meat on a sub. Even an 8 inch can be two meals. It's a hole in the wall but that seems to be where the best places are located.

I just want to say how good it is to see this place around. I was raised in Herndon my mom was the manager at the Deli when Frank Alessi was the owner , and I remember coming in after school finishing my homework behind the counter , watching them slice the cheese , meats , and me getting to de-core all the lettuce. Everything was so fresh and good , it was nothing to get handed a sweet piece of fresh mozzie or provolone as it was being sliced for a custom hoagie. The Redskins used to come in all the time since Redskin Park was right there. It's just very nice to see even though the owners are not the same it seems the enjoyment and happiness and satisfaction has still remained the same. I miss being at home watching them make the homemade cannoli filling and getting to lick the bowl. Cheers to all that are still enjoying and salute.

I'm pretty sure 'A Deli' and 'The Deli' are not owned by the same people as I may have alluded to in my first review -- they are just two extremely similar sandwich shops within a few miles of each other. They are both excellent. Nothing has changed in the year that's passed from my first review. Go now!

I haven't actually been to The Deli, I've only eaten the sandwiches that hubby brings home. He had kept it a secret for awhile. One day he came home with leftovers from his Friday lunch... a sandwich from the deli. One look at it and I had to have a bite. Who knew that a sandwich didn't need all the condiments slathered on it? (cough Subway cough) High end meats and some cheese, peppers and oil.. that's all it really needs. I typically get him to bring a sandwich home a couple times a month. The big one is 2 to 4 meals depending on how hungry you are. Awesome sandwich... yet quite pricey.

When I worked in the area, I would go here a lot! The subs are something to look forward to - quality and quantity. Fresh meats and cheese and friendly staff. One visit here and you may never visit another nearby sandwich shop again. A+.

  • Stephen M.

I love local, non-chain restaurants, but this place has a ways to go. Microwaving sandwiches is not what I'm looking for in a deli, and a lot of the meat seemed to be packaged off-site and shipped in...not exactly fresh. Owner was friendly, but the food quality is not there. Will not return.

How can you SELL cheese, but can't make me a cheese sandwich? Bad service. Dirty looking floors. No thanks.

I'm sure this place is great if you like spicy mustard or mayo since those are their only condiment offerings.

  • Brian S.

Decent. A little bit disappointed. Another deli that just slaps together some frozen stuff. I got the madd Italian which it looked like the meat was already packaged for the sandwich. It had a ton of pepperoni on it which kind of overpowered the sandwich. She accidentally added oil and vinegar which I didn't really mind that much. Price is about average for the area. It seems like they microwave their hot stuff which is a knock. Not a bad option but definitely not what you look for in a great sub place.

  • Adam C.

Best sandwich in the area. You may walk in and think "why are these sandwiches so expensive? Why should I pay $12-13 for the same sandwich I can get at subway for $6-8?" Wait until you get your Deli sandwich, then you'll have your answer. The sandwiches are huge, packed full of the freshest ingredients, succulent lunch meats, and wrapped in fresh bread. They are so big that I've literally PULLED A MUSCLE IN MY MOUTH by trying to eat one too quickly. So, when you order your sandwich, sit down, take a breath, and take small bites to avoid injury. You will enjoy it.

I was born and raised in Herndon and ever since I can remember, The Deli has been there. We used to call it "Frank's" and it was our go-to spot for subs. I would get the Hog, my dad would get the Deli, and my mom would get the seafood salad. I recently made a few pilgrimages out there and it is literally exactly the same! The smell, the decor, the bread! Love it! Their subs are stuffed, like overflowing, with high quality meat and their dressings are awesome too. It's a bit more expensive than the supermarket subs; you know those 14" W-subs (which are also pretty awesome); but man, The Deli is worth the price every once and a while.

I will start this review with a disclaimer--everyone ELSE I know absolutely LOVES this place, including my boyfriend. I had heard that these subs were the best in the area, so I had high expectations. The inside of the store is really cool--it's like a real old school deli, with a row of shelving with actual like grocery items to buy and it looks old inside which is quaint and nice. I ordered "The Budster" which is my favorite combo of meats, turkey and ham. My boyfriend ordered the "Mad Italian." They whipped them up SUPER fast and they were huge (make you realize how much Subway is skimping when they say their subs are really 12 inches). We got the two large subs, two medium sized bags of chips and a slice of oreo cheescake--$40, not cheap at all. My sub to me basically tasted like an enormous pile of very high quality but salty meat, with remnants of bread and some hot peppers. I couldn't taste the mayo, cheese, oil and vinegar or anything. If you are a big meat lover--like my boyfriend--this is a dream sub because it is fresh, very good heaps of meat on some bread. I personally like my subs to be more of a flavor combination, where the meat is the focus but the accents like the dressings and veggies and bread and cheese are detectable and come together with the meat to form an interesting taste experience. I don't love meat enough to just eat gobs of it, and I am also sensitive to salt, so the amount of salt taste in the sub was too much for me. The cheesecake was probably the worst I've had, as well. I wasn't even sure it was cheesecake--it had a strange consistency and was almost flavorless which was weird. So I wouldn't recommend their desserts. I think you have to be the kind of person who LOVES loves loves meat to really like this place. I probably won't be going back myself but I'm sure my boyfriend will and there is no question this place has very fine quality deli meat galore.

The sandwiches and subs at The Deli are indeed huge, and stuffed with good quality meat, but I think for the price it could be a little cheaper. I believe it was $26 for two sandwiches and sodas. I ordered the 8 inch "pizza" cheesesteak, which was good, but I think I would have preferred it with no marinara sauce, so I should've got a regular cheeseteak. They did, however, warn me before that it did have the sauce on it, when I requested lettuce and tomato. The sandwich my bf got, I forgot the name, was a bunch of their assorted deli meats, with peppers. I really enjoyed it, and I could tell the meats were fresh and sliced right then and there. That's the pro of The Deli, good quality meat. Otherwise an 8' sub will run you higher than usual ($8-$12).

  • Jermoil A.

The name says it all "THE DELI" and nothing in the Metropolitan area can compare as they are a real authentic Deli, they have many different types of meat, cheese and breads and they are always fresh, very nice staff to accommodate as well An 8 inch sub here will look like a sub with Extra meat from anywhere else and there will be more meat than lettuce, they also have wines, cannolis and numerous chips to choose from I've been coming here for years and they have sustained the Perfect Deli Sandwich

After reading all the great reviews, I decided to give the place a shot, after all it is two lights from my job. First let me start of by saying I had to rethink going in because it didn't look too promising. After going in, I wasn't sure where to go, there really wasn't a direction or sense of where to start (this is why the 4 stars not 5). So I just walked up to the cashier who gave me a menu, I ordered the Italian. The whole process from entering the door to getting my food and leaving took 7 minutes at most. I didn't like that they don't do "combos" since the cashier asked me if I'd like chips and drink and I asked if it was a combo, to which she said no it's all separate, so passed on the offer. Anyway, fast forward to me eating at my job, it was DELICIOUS! It's so fresh and savory. I will be going back. Such a plus that during the lunch rush this yummy place doesn't get overly crowded causing the quality of the food to go down. Great for a quick bite to eat ! Edit to add: the charge you .50 is you use a debit/credit card (also why it didn't get the 5 stars)

The Deli is delicious and the prices are fair. If you go anywhere else to get a sub around here then you're a dumby.

  • Richard C.

Excellent subs! I've had the italian and budster so far and both were great. As stated, tons of high quality deli meats on your sandwhich. Im a big guy and can eat my share and the 8' is actually enough to fill me up. It is expensive, $10 for the 8 and 13 for the footlongs and they dont have combos. 10 bucks for a sub/chips/ and a pop and I might be here every day of the week lol. The service is nice I must mention as well. HIGHLY recommed.

This place would have gotten 5 stars but... The last few times they have fallen off bad. Made my sandwich wrong 2 times a row. I place an order at 8:30 they don't close until 9. And the lady says " I'm closing early cause Im tired and want to go home". Really? What business does that?

I wish there was more meat in my Super Deli :( The bread to meat ratio just isn't there and I think it's partially due to how thin the slices are cut. In contrast, my coworker's Hog was perfectly filled with roast beef and turkey. I guess it has something to do with the type of meat you pick? I will say that hot peppers were yummy. It kind of helped fill in some spots where the meat was missing. I don't come out of the way to come here, but it's satisfying enough for a midday meal.

Had to change my original review from five to four stars cus the owner is now charging .50 cents extra for anyone who uses a debit card or credit card. Hopefully, he doesn't start skimping on the ingredients. Foot longs are now over $10 bucks.

Yes!!! You want a sub/hoagie, then there is none better in the area. Deli fresh cuts 'and super nice staff, help you out with the menu by pointing out the favorites!! Reminds me of an authentic deli, not these franchises of today. Definitely recommend.

My dad used to bring us here when we were kids to get subs, canolis and/or imported Italian goodies, and it was awesome. However, I'm sad to say that the glory days are over & my last three visits here have really sucked. On most recent trip I ordered the New Yorker (corned beef & pastrami). Unfortunately, it was served stone cold (very disappointing since I was expecting it to be hot) & I'm not even sure if they offer anything other than cold subs. Anyway, after a few bites I then realized that most of the sub was bread, coleslaw & cheese, with barely any meat, wtf! I just paid $10.50 for a cold 8" sub with barely any of the "sub" ingredients & without chips or a drink. Those are crazy DC prices with crap quality & without anything extra included. There are plenty of other delis that give you better quality and value for your money all over NoVA & DC. So I won't be coming back and that's a shame since the owners are nice and have been there forever. The only reason I'm giving The Deli more than one star is b/c you can still get good desserts and imported Italian goodies there. Anything else....forget about it.

  • Ian D.

They don't skimp on the meat! Somehow what looks like a regular sandwich from a deli just tastes incredible. This is my favorite Deli in the NoVA area.

NYC is my hometown & I've worked in a deli, so a good sub sandwich is something I look for whatever town I'm in. The Deli (I visit the Herndon location) is consistently good with its cold sub sandwiches. You pay a little more than you would at a Firehouse, Subway's, Jimmy John's, Potbelly or Quiznos, but you're getting a bigger sandwich, a little more meat/cheese & vastly better sub rolls. 1/2 of a 12" is a full-on meal. The staff is friendly. If they're super busy, you may or may not get the hot peppers you asked for - or didn't - once in awhile. So if a topping is a make or break enjoyment thing on your sandwich make sure you communicate that clearly. Favorites: the Super Hog, the Mad Italian & the Salut. The only thing keeping this store - with its tasty cakes, generous portions & Italian imported goodies like cookies & frozen pasta as well - from 5-star Nirvana: their hot subs. The oddly cubed eggplant & chicken in their Parmesan subs isn't the yummiest, though I can see why it'd be done that way - ease of heating up quickly. The resulting texture isn't delicious with the bread. It leads to all the sauce & cheese clumping at the top & detracts from the mouthfeel of the sandwich. I see other Yelpers' few negative comments seem to be about the hot sandwiches as well. For a nice chewy coldcut sub or regular sandwich, this place is the most NY sandwich experience I've had in this part of Northern VA. Meaty, juicy & they have chewy, crusty bread & big ol' sour pickles & Bruce Cost ginger ale to wash it all down. Mmmm.

It's been ages since I've had a steak and cheese this good. The turkey sandwich was also par excellence. I loved that the owner was there, working solo on a weekday. Will definitely be returning.

  • Xuan-Lise C.

Ordered a mad italian and a smokey. I enjoyed my sandwich, can't say it's my favorite deli style, the bread just wasn't quite right, for me. But I realized very quickly that deli subs are completely based off your childhood experiences and favorites. This was definitely not what my boyfriend enjoyed, he complained through the whole meal. Will continue our search. If this your style, the service is quick, the sandwiches very full and there's a very large assortment of chips.

Fantastic! I am from Philly and this is absolutely as good if not better than the hoagies in Philly plus it is here in Northern Virginia! Owner was very accommodating when I asked to create my own hoagie. Picked up a few jars of hot and mild peppers which are challenging to find at most grocery stores in this area. We will definitely be back.

I went to high school in NY so this place offered a bit of nostalgia for me in both appearance, menu options, flavor and store set up. It's a small place with 4 or 5 tables in it, a low shelving unit with a variety of pastas and other Italian grocery items. The bread was great. Nice texture and light flavor so it did not cover up or overpower the other flavors. I got The Hog which is turkey, roast beef & provolone. The roast beef was low key but good - fresh and sliced thinly, nice mild flavor and perfectly tender and pink. The turkey was your basic processed loaf pumped with salt fluids and sliced thin. The combo was good but I think next time I would get just the roast beef. Standard sandwich toppings are LTOM & hot peppers. Would have liked to have had mustard but the hot peppers took care of the vinegary kick I was looking for. The onions were in the background and did what they were supposed to do which is enhance & not overwhelm. The sum of the parts of the sandwich together were better than the individual ingredients on their own - which is the basic premise of an all around good sandwich. It's really a 3.5 but the place is clean, people are friendly and like I said, nostalgia. I would go back here. Note the sandwiches are large and stuffed - 8" and 12"

Ordered the Eggplant parm - the bread wasn't very fresh or good quality, the sauce was poured on the top of the sandwich and the cheese on top of that, so in other words when you got to the bottom of the roll it was a breaded vegetable with out sauce or cheese. You take for granted that building a great sandwich actually takes a little skill, until you have a lousy one. I also purchased a cannoli - the cream tasted very generic and not fresh. I could have really done better at the local Giant Grocery Store deli counter. Very disappointed.

Great place here in Herndon in the K-mart shopping plaza, terrific for lunch. Great size sandwiches, and the salty dog is excellent. Also have utz crab chips, which bumps them to 5+ -- stuff is fire

Very casual ambience featuring great cold Italian subs in large portions! If you're into fresh bread and premium cold cuts of salami, mortadella, capicolla, prosciutto, pepperoni, provolone, etc, you'll love this place!! Great choices of pickled vegetables, olives, hot peppers, and the like for the perfect muffuletta!
