Tommy's Restaurant is a very busy, very popular diner that serves a real deal down home breakfast. I came on a Friday morning for a business meeting and the place was hopping. And for as busy as it is - service is fast! My omelet appeared within minutes from ordering it and it was steaming hot and delicious. Coffee refills are constant and my server was friendly and efficient. Something to note - I waited in the lobby area for about a half hour as I was early for my meeting. Each and every person that walked past said hello or good morning. Maybe it is Southern Charm or maybe it is just a lot of happy customers. Either way, I'll be back next time I'm in the area.

Quick service, great food. I ordered the meat lovers omelet with hash browns, and a biscuit on the side. I enjoyed the food and the speed of the service. The waiter knew his menu in and out. ****The only reason it gets 4 stars is because it does not take Cards**** It's 2015, really?

Nothing special. I ordered 2x pecan waffles and sausage. Food was delivered in less than 2 minutes but at 11$. This was Way Too pricey for the value. Service was friendly and polite. Management clearly does not trust employees. They do not take credit cards but have an ATM that charges high fees. The place could be much cleaner. I will not return. Tables and chairs were sticky. Lots of flies.

So I pulled into the parking lot clean as a whistle (off of Mercury Blvd) which is almost unheard of in this area...I'm not a big fan of this area of Hampton as I use to live here but I can't believe this gem!! I walk into the restaurant and the door is laden with stickers of all kind, I don't know what is relevant. Ill tell you what I didn't see? Credit card stickers on the door, know why? There's an ATM in the lobby with a $2.75 surcharge because this restaurant only accepts checks and cash, odd! I walked into the door and there were two employees at the furthest table. One was rolling silver ware and the other was separating coffee filters. I walked in and stood in the doorway being stared at for a long 30 seconds before I was asked if I was dining in. My chair was sticky but ok, maybe it's because the wood is old. The food was ok, nothing I would write home about. I can tell you my waitress had me try the cinnamon toast and it was delicious!!!! Other than that, everything else was just ok. Tommy's Combo: *new price* $6.50 Diet Pepsi: $2.19 Honestly, I'd rather have gone next door and had a doughnut and coffee.

The breakfast and lunch are consistent and good, Don't be fooled by the long line that usually starts to creep outside, you usually don't end up waiting for more than 15 minutes. Then once you're seated and order, you get your food in a relatively fast manner. Well worth the wait. I love getting the spinach and feta omelette and I usually add tomato to it. Always get the biscuit and grits! Their hash browns are decent as well though. Also have had their chicken salad sandwich which is great and one time had their sweet potato pancake special. I have to say one of the best sweet potato pancakes I've had. A neighborhood favorite that is consistent with excellent staff and service. Can't ever go wrong with Tommy's!

Very busy restaurant that's worth the wait. The line moves fairly quick so I wouldn't let that discourage you. It's classic american diner food made well and the wait staff is very helpful. I'm only giving it 4 stars because they only accept cash which can be a little inconvenient at times but they do have an ATM at the front which takes a $2.50 service fee. That aside, still a great place to eat.

Been coming here since I was a little kid. Always good and always cheap. A Hampton classic.

I love Tommy's and so does everyone else because there is always a line! It's like a little piece of home and you will most likely see someone that you know there. It's not just breakfast so you do have options. I usually get breakfast I have to have the french toast. As much as I love bread I will say the biscuits need a little bit of work. They are a little more gritty that I like but some might like them like that (I'm a soft fluffy biscuit chick). They also have my drink of choice PEPSI, that's always a bonus for me. The biscuits are the only thing keeping me from giving this place 5 starts but you do have the option for toast.

Tommy's is one of these Mom & Pop shops that's been open for as long as I can remember. Just so that there is no confusion, just let me first say that their hours are from 6AM to 3PM and THEY DO NOT TAKE CREDIT OR DEBIT CARDS!!!! This is not a TYPO. They do have an ATM in the corner. Just bring cash please. I have never in the history of eating here seen this place not packed. I don't care if it's 7AM or 2PM. In the summer time just about every day the line is out the door. And EVERY weekend it's the same. Drive by and you'll see. People just in line talking and waiting. Do yourself a favor and place a to go order if being packed like sardines isn't your thing (doesn't bother me because the food, the price and the service make up for it). So on to the food. Let's see how can I describe it...It's good COMFORT food. Steak and eggs, omelets, grits, salmon cakes, sausage patties, scrapple all YUMMY. The only thing that I've had on the lunch menu is the catfish and it was GOOD. I'm a breakfast girl so I usually stick to the breakfast side of the menu. Even when I got the catfish, I ordered it with cheese grits and scrambled eggs (it's a southern thing) Service is fast paced and excellent. One of my favorite spots when I'm in Hampton. And once I leave, I go across the street and get a donut at Krispy Kreme to prepare me for my customary after meal nap.

I'll give four stars: I had the Tommy's breakfast and my boyfriend had the two eggs with chicken bacon. We both had hash browns and a biscuit, shared a side of corned beef hash and I had pancakes. He drank a Mountain Dew and I had a coffee. All for under $22. The service was amazing! We were seated fast & our drinks stayed filled. The food was alright it was a good amount for what we paid but I didn't see the hype behind it. It wasn't bad by any means but it wasn't the best breakfast I've ever had. I will probably go back to try their lunch items. Tip: bring cash BC they don't accept cards (which is inconvenient in my opinion but they have an ATM on site.)

Lunch specials for $5.50! I don't think anything on the menu was over $7.00 Grits and collard greens and delishishness. I would dine here at twice the price. Super friendly and efficient service, the place was busy but our server made us feel like we had all the time in the world. Excellent value, quality (ask for the daily specials, they're the best), great for take out. Such a sweet place!

Great food, and not too pricey either. I used to come here for breakfast with my shop from work every friday. If you get the breakfast special, be prepared to loosen your belt a few notches. You will get a ton of food. Like three plates full. Not even joking. I've come here for lunch before as well. They have pretty good sandwiches. The service is good too. I've never had a bad a experience here. The only gripe I have is that they close at 3. There's so many times where I've had a craving for this place, but they'd be closed. Other than the limited hours, I have no complaints about this place. Highly recommend. After all, Joe Pesci ate there and gave them a thumbs up. You can't go wrong with this place.

  • Dawn Y.

The food is very tasty! Hot and well prepared. However, the long wait, poor service and fact they were out of menu items knocked cost them 2 stars. The line was out the door, seats are tight, and food did not all come all at once. Also... I had to take off for the fact they do not accept Credit Cards... because it's 2015.

You gotta love Tommy's. Their catfish is so fluffy and delicious. I get it Every time and I havent been disappointed yet. The staff is always so friendly.

Visited there for brunch and enjoyed a very good omelette! The line was long to get in but it moved along and it was worth the wait! Service was prompt and friendly and our server was great. The action in the kitchen was busy and we got our orders faster than quickly!!!! By the time I returned from the restroom; my order was on the table!!! I very much recommend this place if you like a great menu and like a good breakfast! Bring cash! They don't accept credit cards!

I went to Tommys today for breakfast. The food was delicious as I remembered. The catfish was tasty & so were the pancakes.

Whether or not you like this place is all about expectations. If you are looking for a mom and pop place with good food and friendly service, then you will be pleased. If you are looking for a gourmet restaurant with pristine decor and environment, you will be disappointed. Food is good, better than chains . Biscuits were awesome. Prices are cheap. Service was fast and friendly. Good for families. Definitely a locals joint. There was a line out the door when we arrived, but it did move quickly. They take cash only, but there is an ATM onsite.

  • Everett W.

Great food at a great price. The line is always out the door on the weekends. The staff is great and will get you in and out in a matter of minuets. Try the bacon pancakes you can't go wrong with it. This place cooks like your grandma used to. The portions are big so bring your appetite .

Lord please forgive me - for i do not see the hype. As of date- 4 stars 61 reviews? Thats nuts! So, everytime i throw in 4 stars +breakfast into the trusty yelp filter- this place almost always tops the list. I decided, since i may be leaving VA soon for a bit ( sniff sniff) I MUST try tommys. Lets do the math : Service : They're the fastest sit down place i think ive ever been to . Our server Tiffany was marvelous. She tried to accommodate us as the venues temp was so incredibly high- i felt like we were being cooked for breakfast. She moved us to a cooler part of the restaurant- much appreciated ! Our new server was also very nice. Food came out SUPER FAST. I mean i was shocked. I think it was within 5 min of placing our order! My buddy also asked them if they could make her sandwich without butter and oil- and from the looks of her sandwich they accommodated and we were appreciative of that . 1 star for FAB service. Ambiance: Typical diner. Seemed like a ton of regulars- and i can see why. friendly staff + cheap menu. My firend and i ate & drank for a total of 13$. Thats a wicked deal around here! - 1 star for thriftiness Food: Tasted like regular food. IDk,i didnt see the thrill and i do not think this place should be on an episode of " diners drive in and dives" like a fellow member claims. Maybe its just us, idk? My fav place to eat in hampton roads so far has to be " the broken egg" in chesapeake- hands down, so maybe its just cause i compare every breakfast place to that. Menu was great- plenty of breakfast and brunch options. - 1 star for accomodating menu. Only sucky part of their menu was the fact that they did not have FRESH FRUIT. If i needed to ever run and inhale breakfast- i will definitely stop by here. Its good, but not 4/5 stars good IMHO.

The food is always great here. The price is low also. The only con is it's almost always crowded.

For the money this place is good. It's a bit chaotic but the food is decent and the service is good. This place has been here for ages. If you want decent food at a great price this is the place. It gets crowded so be patient

Went to Williamsburg, Va for a 3 day getaway. We drove 30 miles to get to our old stomping grounds. Tommy's is is still great. There was a line out the door and this was around 11:00 a.m. We were willing to wait without question, because this was a sign that Tommy's was still good. We hadn't been in maybe 11years? Cyrus was our server and he was great. Friendly and efficient. What more could you ask for. We ordered the breakfast combo with cinnamon toast and pancakes. AMAZING. The eggs were cooked as ordered. The turkey sausage was great. I did not want to leave and go home because I knew I would miss Tommy's. Now, I am looking for a reason to go back. Two breakfast combos with a few extras was right around $20. Excellent value and excellent customer service. They are open until 3:00 pm and serve breakfast all day. They also have daily specials.

First things first... Cash only. They have an ATM machine for people like me who don't carry cash... But I'm told it is always breaking down so be prepared with cash. Second, we were lucky to not have to wait in line and were seated before the rush came in. Things here go very fast. The line out the door apparently gets you seated in 10-20 mins, obviously depending on the customers they're serving. Third, the price you can't beat. My meal was under $9 including my drink. Lastly, the service was fast and friendly. Our drinks were never empty and our food was on the table in about 5 mins. Overall I was very please with my experience at Tommy's Restaurant in Hampton. I will definitely be returning

As good as ever! Have not been here for a few months, the service and food is still one of the best in Hampton, they have won multiple " best of" awards, and it's easy to see why. Simply put , you have gotta try Tommys for breakfast!

Always a favorite place. We had company and went this AM for breakfast. $28 for three large breakfast w/omelettes, grits, bacon, toasts, tea and coffee. Kim was our waitress, she is great!

  • Pei-Ju H.

Tommy's is the perfect place to go eat an amazing breakfast. The food is so affordable and the portions are generous. The only downfall is that there is always a wait on the weekends, so don't expect to arrive there and be seated immediately. Sometimes it is so busy you start feeling a bit claustrophobic in there. And they don't take cards, just cash. But all that is worth it for the yummy food!

  • Bobby C.

My absolute favorite place to eat breakfast in Hampton roads. Highly recommended if you can get over the wait and the fact that they don't take credit cards. They seat you very fast, regardless of the length of the line, and everyone is friendly. Every server asks you if you want a coffee refill which gets very annoying since you're being asked every 2 minutes. Other than that it's seriously a great down home breakfast and lunch spot.

  • Victoria J.

The prices are pretty good. We had to wait about five minutes before being seated. I ordered the baby back ribs $10), fries and greens. The ribs were seasoned surprisingly well and they were not saucy. The greens this day were actually a mix of spinach and oddly seasoned. My friend ordered the open face beef sandwich which she scarfed down. The place was busy and noisy. It appeared clean and very well-staffed. I will definitely return. My friend says she wants to go back and try the whole menu...which will take a while.

My last meal in Norfolk was at Tommy's. We beat the lunch crowd by ten minutes. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes, black eyed peas and cabbage. It was fantastic. Service was great. This is a CASH only place so remember that. Good cheap meal. Just wish they offered corn bread. Guess I was to far north to get that...

  • Cliff H.

My favorite spot for breakfast. Portions are generous and prices are low. The service is always attentive and friendly. I've had breakfast here a dozen times over the last couple years. The typical meal includes a huge Western omelette and hash browns for me, 2 scrambled eggs and a pile of bacon for my daughter, rye toast, and a couple freshly baked biscuits... for around $15. Try to get to Tommy's early and bring cash. They do not accept credit/debit cards, but there is an ATM on site.

This place has been around for a long time, I've been coming here for years. Some quick tips- 1. Bring cash, they don't accept credit cards. 2. Be prepared to wait in line, especially on the weekend. But the line moves pretty fast & it's worth the wait. 3. If you don't want to wait in line, you can call ahead & order your food to go. Then just slide in, pay & leave. The prices here are super cheap & the food is awesome. It's usually always busy, it's a small bustling restaurant. They will probably be around for years to come.

This place should be on Diners, Dive Ins and Dives. This is only a breakfast and lunch place but it's ALWAYS BUSY! Depending on what time of day the line can go faster than other days. But don't worry there is enough food on the plate to fill your appetite after waiting in a long line. The food is simple diner food, and amazingly affordable prices! I have never been disappointed with their food and I have been going here with my parents for more than 10 years! I'm very grateful that dont make the boxed mashed potatoes and that they have lumps in them! :) The service is always warm and fast, I never had a grumpy waitress. Most of the ladies have been working there for years, so they know what they're doing. Suggested Menu Items: EVERYTHING! FYI there's also a daily special board, everything is under $10, most is around $5 and it's all so good!

Some friends and I are in town for a wedding from Charleston, SC and wanted to try tome local fare for breakfast. This place was awesome! Good local food for a great price and I got WAAAAYYY more than I expected. Thanks for the experience!

  • Y.D. H.

I had to try Tommy's, several people on the job raved about this restaurant. Tried to go last weekend but the line was out the door, so I tried again this weekend it was a wait too but not out the door. The food was good nothing to rave about. I ordered the fish and grits with a side of hash browns and my mother ordered the spinach, feta and mushrooms omelette with grits. Service was excellent but who in this day does not take credit/debit cards well Tommy's doesn't so please bring cash. Thank goodness the prices were reasonable and I had cash on hand for once. I would go back only if I'm in the area but will never make a special trip from VA BCH just to go again.

I woke up early after a late night at the Hampton Coliseum seeing Phish. Tommy's was the first thing on mind; I had been salivating and reading the yelp review the night before. I knew I had to get there before leaving town, but as my friends slept and slept I could see the line getting longer and longer in my head: go early. Or late. We arrived (party of 6) at prime brunch hour (11 ish) and the line was out the door. I took my place at the end. My boyfriend was giving me the evil eye. He wanted me to throw in the towel and he was looking longingly at the fast food joints surrounding us, but I wouldn't budge. I was beginning to doubt myself too, wondering if I could hold out, but a local woman in front of me could see the hunger in my eyes and assured me that the line looks worse than it really is. "Usually it's all the way around the corner," she said. So we waited. If weren't a party of six, we could have gotten in within 15 minutes. As it was, we got in within half an hour. It was worth it! SO MUCH FOOD AND SO CHEAP AND SO DELICIOUS. Our service was really prompt and friendly and everything came out properly and quickly! Everyone at the table raved about their biscuits, omelettes, and pancakes. The hash browns have great flavor, but did not come out crispy, so be sure to request "extra crispy" if that's your thang.... Highly recommended!

  • Bessent L.

The service is outstanding for such a busy place, the food on the other hand is not. If you don't mind all of your food being covered in fake butter then this is your place. If you care about quality food then stay FAR away from this place

  • Robin J.

Best breakfast! Long lines out the door, service is quick, food is great, cash only. Come hungover and talk about the night before with your girlfriends. It's the only way.

    (5)
  • Aiden B.

The food was okay at best. Cash only? Seriously?! It's 2014, get with the program! With as busy as this place always seems to be (but the wait was totally NOT worth it), they can well afford to start accepting credit/debit cards like every other restaurant in semi-developed nations. You can get much better food and service at Belgian Waffle & Steak House on Warwick Blvd in Newport News.

I always would come to Tommys as a kid after going to church with my neighbor and her friend. This place just reminds you of home , its straight up no frills , home cooking. PROS: -fast -inexpensive -large portions -great selection -great taste CONS: -usually crowded -closes at 2pm -only takes cash

  • Leanne S.

My mom introduced me to this place a couple years ago. It's a cute little dive spot that's great for breakfast/brunch. They are always busy, even at 11 on a weekday. You're pretty much going to expect to wait, but the wait has never taken too long. Food comes out pretty quickly and the staff has always been friendly. It's pretty much what you would expect of a breakfast menu, but it's pretty good. I would give it 4 stars but they don't accept credit cards, cash and check only, and I feel like that's a mistake these days, especially with how easy it is to set that up. And personally I never carry cash, only my credit card, so I have to go by the bank if I want to eat here.

Breakfast is definitely my favorite meal of the day and considering I work super early I hardly get the chance to have a full fledge breakfast on working days so whenever I'm off, I like finding neat little local breakfast joints. Tommy's according to the great reviews was at the top of my list! My sister and I went here for breakfast this morning and I was so hopeful after seeing a full house! Lots of hustle and bustling going on in such a small space. By the time we left there was a line out the door! Crazy. Lots of parking and more even flowing onto the business lots next door so that wasn't an issue. Most mom n' pop places like this are cash only, they accept checks too but...yea, checks are for rent only in my world, lol. Anyway, the inside is a tight squeeze of chairs, beverage stands, people and tables. We were able to get in without a wait. Oh, and theres an ATM as well for folks that don't carry cash on them. I orders 2 sunny side up eggs, hash browns with onion and mushrooms, toast with jelly and grits. My sis ordered a western omelette, biscuits and hash browns. We also had coffee as a beverage. The hostess and all the waitress were super friendly and attentive throughout our meal until it was time to go. We had to wait about 15 minutes until I made my way up to the cashier asking for the check, but considering how busy it was I wouldn't hold it against them. Sadly, I do have to agrees with some of the lower rated reviews because one-the tables weren't really all that clean and did have that sticky residue on them. And two, the food was just okay. However, the prices are very cheap and for a lot of food and lots of coffee refills I think $20 ain't so bad. The coffee was very weak and watery. The eggs and toast were perhaps the best thing served. My sister took one bit of the hash browns and refused to eat the rest because they were super undercooked. There was hardly any browning at the edges and the inside seemed pretty raw. Even with the added onions and mushrooms in my has browns I had to dowse it in pepper and salt for some type of flavor. The biscuits looks raw as well and the grits were lumpy and watery. Overall, I am happy that lots of locals and military folks come here for breakfast but I think there are better options available for breakfast sadly. I probably wouldn't come here again.

Great friendly service you expect from a local place like this. I love coming here for breakfast. They've got a wide selection and cook it quick enough to make your tee time. You have to get there early because there's nearly always a line to wait for a table. However, if you arrive between 6 and 7:30, there shouldn't be much of a wait.

Good food and great service! There is always a line but they get you in and out!! Best breakfast in town

  • Marlene M.

Great location, selection of foods and prices are low, low, low. You can get yourself a hot meal for less than $5 a person. Amazing! This place is so popular that during their busiest times, Saturday/Sunday mornings, the lines are out the door. But no worry, the service is so fast, that you wouldnt remember you were standing in line at all. There are many regular customers and these folks can strike up a conversation. Fun times! The wait staff is down to earth and real. Very courteous and friendly. The cook/chefs, themselves, are phenomenol. They are like trained to cook in speedy time without compromising the quality of the food. This is one of my favorite spots to dine for breakfast. Yum yums!

This is a classic greasy spoon (as we call them in England). We didn't have to wait long (about 5 minutes) but we got there at about 9am on a Saturday morning. By the time we came out, the queue was outside the door into the car park. The service was excellent, but there were a couple of mix ups. I got bacon instead of the sausage I ordered, but the waitress just brought out the sausage and gave me the bacon for free! Then we got someone else's bill, but fortunately it was the table next to us who had our bill so we just did a straight swap. The coffee was delicious and just kept coming, and the hash browns were amazing. The mini pancakes weren't as light as I would like, but that's just a personal preference. Be warned, I saw someone order the large pancakes and they were massive! Fantastic value for money and a great home cooked breakfast.

  • Melissa G.

The food is never bad. Some items I like better than other items (like the Reuben and the Cuban), but I've never had a bad meal there. The price is always excellent. Some people complain that the restaurant is cash-only, but that is part of the way that they keep the price down. Credit card machines are far more expensive than most people realize. My family of six can eat for $30 - $35. It's cheaper than McDonald's. There's always a line, but you never have to wait long. I think the longest I ever waited for a table was 15 minutes. Those staff members can hustle, and they do!

  • T W.

Good price, good portions, ok food. Coffee is weak and watered down, had a vegetable omelet (grill not skillet) with minimal vegetables and the spinach was definitely from a can. Biscuis were home made but I wouldnt call them good. Service was friendly and fast once you get in. I think this place has high ratings only because of price.

What in the world? This place was off the chain! One of the few places that Yelp has steered me to trying. People always want to hit up chain spots so I always suggest a local spot...business meetings or casual. Today, I pushed we go local. I ordered Tommy's Breakfast Combo thanks to Rory J's review. For $5.50 I was in a food coma before 9am. Eggs, sausage patties, hash browns, pancakes and biscuits/toasts on the side. Fat kid tried to finish his meal but I couldn't afford a nap in the car so early in the day! We were in at 8:30 and out by 10:15. Most of the time spent there was talking. Their service was impeccable. Food was literally out in five minutes. As many people as they had in the house most of this stuff is already made. Even after we were done eating it was literally every two minutes we were asked about refills on our coffee and water. It can be annoying to some but we all often complain about poor service. Every server in the house that walked by offered assistance. You really can't go wrong with that. By the time we left there was a line waiting out the door. With good food, large portions, quick service and a very friendly and ATTENTIVE staff it's no wonder people line up to visit this place. Cash rules everything around me. Well, not really. But at this place your hard plastic is no good.

Warning! Do not be fooled by all the great reviews. I normally do not write bad reviews but this needed to be done. The first look at the restaurant looked fine. We walk in and are greeted quickly and taken to our table. I grab the back of my chair and it is real sticky. We sit down and start looking around. I notice the table next to ours has a plate with most the food left on it but nobody sitting there. Warning sign number one. The menu had nothing special, just egg breakfast combos, omelets, and pancakes. I looked for the biscuits and gravy that were "to die for" but did not see them. I settled on 2 eggs scrambled with cheese, hash browns, homemade sausage, and a biscuit. I added cheese and peppers to my hash browns and ordered a side of gravy for my biscuit. I got a cup of coffee and oj. The bad... Where do I start. The coffee was very weak and tasted like maxwell house or something of that nature. Not the worst coffee so I was still positive. The OJ was pure concentrate that was not mixed well. We got our food fast and began to eat. The eggs were awful. Runny and no salt or pepper. They tasted like powdered eggs that were made in a huge batch and served from a steam table. The hash browns were mostly raw in the middle. The homemade sausage was one huge patty that was ok around the edges but awful in the middle. The biscuit was not fully cooked and doughy. Not flakey lake a proper biscuit should be. The gravy was the absolute worst I've ever had. It tasted like milk and flower mixed together with some sausage bits thrown in for good measure (I know gravy is fat, flower, and milk but this was awful). I had to dump so much pepper on the gravy to make it edible. I did not finish my meal. I love breakfast. Typically it is an easy to cook meal that is hard to mess up. I can only think that people that have given this place a decent review are friends and family of the restaurant. Maybe the lunch is fine but breakfast was awful. There is a Waffle House just down the street that is probably much better. I did notice a lot of elderly people at Tommy's and my only thought is the restaurant caters towards elderly people that like bland food. People that say this is the best breakfast they have ever had must live in the twilight zone or something. I'd say more but the muskrat sausage patty might be coming back up soon. Oh, and they don't take credit cards. The good... The staff was nice and friendly. TL;DR Do not eat at this place.

This was the best breakfast I've ever had, and it's not close. From the hash browns with sweet onions, to the home made sausage the size of a hamburger, everything was clearly fresh, and expertly made. My eyes were bugging out of my head as I watched the staff buzzing around with plates heaped with delicious-looking food. For everything we ordered (2 full meals plus 3 additional sides) we walked out with a bill just under 25 w/ tax. The staff was wonderful. I felt like we were being waited on by the whole restaurant the way they worked together to help each other, getting napkins, coffee, and chiming in on questions that weren't asked directly of them. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. I can't wait to go back!

Had eggs over easy, hash browns, and fried oysters. The great thing is that I ordered at 6:30am. They serve lunch from open to close! Food was great and fast, even with the morning rush. Coffee was always full. Great service!

Food is good and fast, service is great, lines get long on the weekends but turnover on tables is pretty fast. I came here with 2 friends for brunch on a Saturday morning, they were busy with a line out the door but I'd say we maybe waited 20 mins for a table? Overall, loved this mom and pop shop and will be back when i'm home visiting the family and need some brunch!

After a long drive to Hampton, it was so nice to see my best buddy again and grab a bite to eat at Tommy's. Our waitress brought us some water soon after we were seated (Thank You! It was hot outside). She was friendly and kindly offered suggestions on some of her favorite dishes. When our meals arrived, she asked us if we needed any condiments. She also came to check on us twice during our meal. I decided to try the Catfish Meal. It was delicious! The fish was soft and melted in my mouth. The batter was light and seasoned perfectly. Hushpuppies and your choice of 2 side items also come with this meal. Tasty Food + Great Prices + Generous Portions = I'm a fan!

The place was packed. The food was very good and prices were very family friendly. I would recommend. They do seem to play favorites with regulars waiting in line but the wait was not bad even with a few being pulled in front of us. Take cash or a check no plastic accepted.

The best food I have had since I moved here from California. Breakfast was amazing. You may be in line for a little bit but even the people in line are nice and chatty. I highly recommend this place! 5 stars. Wish I could do more.

One of my favorite places for good food at a inexpensive price. Expect to stand in line but it's worth it and these waitresses know their business! Great breakfast, fried fish & your cup of coffee never gets past half a cup before it's filled up again! This place is always packed but I will they didn't close so early. But as hard as these people work I can understand it because they do open real early and never slow down!

Good food. Always packed. Arrive early. Had corn beef hash, good breakfast and fast service. Coffee is a bit watery, and place needs a good cleaning.

We hit the lull between the breakfast and lunch surges at 11AM on a Friday: Line out the door. We hung in, despite this usually being a deal breaker, because the other folks in the line were so cheerful and the place smelled great. The line moved quickly and we were seated within a few minutes. The menu offered a bunch of standard choices in diner food for breakfast and lunch. Not much regional quirk. One specific comment on our meal: I had a breakfast sandwich... scrapple and scrambled egg on a fresh, hot biscuit. Fluffy eggs, slightly crisp scrapple... I found myself thinking about this sandwich now and then for weeks afterward. Just perfect. Great diner food. Plentiful and hot. Big breakfasts and excellent prices. The place looks packed, but they are really good at serving quickly. Nicest wait staff.

Always a great price and great atmosphere. I may be coming too much because the waiters, waitresses and owners know me by name. Never had a complaint. Great hometown place to grab lunch, dinner or breakfast all day.

Food is great. You can get a lot for under $10. I've never eaten inside because it's ridiculously crowded. Even just picking up I have to shimmy past a long line of people. But I can see why it's so popular.

I still waiting for this place to be on an episode of diners, drive ins and dives. It good food fast and cheap. This place is a Hampton legend. Everybody eats here lawyers, politicians, Dr. ...to truck drivers and garbage men. The staff is friendly so are the guests. Sure it can quite busy on the weekends especially Sundays when churches get out but the line normally moves quick. I have been going here for years and there prices have barely risen even in these tough times. It's still like $5 for a breakfast platter that has everything when everyone else charges $7-$10.

Local recommendation landed me here. Somewhere that might be featured on. Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Great food, fast service, cheap! Yes, lines are out the door but move pretty darn quick. It's noisy inside and cramped. Still, it's a great meal and everyone was friendly. Will be back!

  • Lou M.

A "greasy spoon" that is pretty good! Now to make sure, this is not a place you go to if you're a food snob. This is the place you go to for down home, good cooking! The food is insanely cheap and the line on a Sunday was down the parking lot. This is a good place to get a good, hearty breakfast. The service is great and rarely will your glass be empty with all the servers hovering around to fill it with coffee, tea, or water. The food came out really fast as well!

Tommy's is a staple in the Hampton/Newport News community. It's been around forever and the long line that greets you EVERY weekend without fail is a testament to the yummy food. Whether you're just leaving church, the club, or an early moring practice Tommy's will draw you in. Come here if you're looking for a meal reminiscent of Grandma's cooking. No fancy frills or unnecessary embellishments. You'll receive a simple plate packed to the brim with a hot breakfast or lunch. The portions are generous and the prices are very low especially considering the amount of food you get. Though I enjoy visits to say IHOP, Cracker Barrel or Bob Evan's If I'm really looking for a meal that "sticks to my bones" I'll always head here. Since I no longer live in the area I can't visit as often as I would like but every time I'm home I make at least one visit to Tommy's. Recommending one meal to try is, oddly enough, way too complicated. The menu is pretty expansive and really covers most meals you think of when you're indulging in diner/"mom and pop" type of food. So I have to just recommend you order your favorite breakfast/lunch dish and prepare to feel like you're back in grandma's kitchen sitting in a booster seat. The bottom line is Tommy's is perfect for a simple home cooked meal for a reasonable price.

One word: Value. ...And that's it... Shady location, mediocre food, but dirt, dirt cheap. I made the mistake of going on President's Day and the line WAS LITERALLY out the door which is impressive since there is a long, narrow vestibule double wide full. The pecan waffles were OK but honestly nothing special. The nuts were a topping, not in the batter. The "Virginia" ham I got (as opposed to the larger but thinner and more salty "Country" ham) came out on my plate luke warm and flavorless. The eggs were cooked to a proper over-medium (which rare nowadays) but again, nothing special. Summary: a lot of cheap, mediocre food for very little money offers a great value w/ a long wait. Private lot that fills up quick during rush hour. I had to wait on a party to leave to get a spot and there was a line of cars out onto the street when I left.

  • Matt B.

As other reviewers have said, this place is ALWAYS crowded. Usually that is a tell-tale sign of a place with amazing and original food. This is the exception to that rule. The food is good but not THAT good. It is worth the wait for the price as there usually is a long line, they do a good job of getting you in. The service is okay at best. I would recommend this place to try once or twice but don't get your hopes up. It's not that great.

  • Larry H.

Got there before the rush of people. First time coming and I'm mad I've never been here before. The servers were great always checking on the tables and friendly. Food was fast and really good everything was cooked to perfection. We basically just passed our plates around so everyone could taste something new. I would recommend this place to everyone

Another long overdue review. Tommy's is a breakfast and lunch diner at the corner of Mercury Blvd and Big Bethel Road in Hampton, Virginia. It's a medium sized white building with blue trim and barely enough parking for the crowds of people who visit daily. The current incarnation of Tommy's has been since 2010, but we've been coming since before then. It is not unusual to see a line of people extending out the door, into the enclosed hallway, and out the door as people wait for their chance to sit within. However, that line moves faster than you might expect. The staff and chefs are so efficient that everything runs like a well oiled assembly line, yet customers are never rushed and the wait staff makes each person feel welcome. I've seen solo eaters finish their meal and keep reading their newspaper or book while a cup of coffee is continually refilled by their hand and no one says a word, even if there's a line into the parking lot. I come to this restaurant every five thousand miles; that is to say that when my car needs an oil change, I take it to the Jiffy Lube next door and then walk over to Tommy's with a book and an appetite. My favorite breakfast is one of their omelets with lots of veggies, and sometimes a meat, with hash browns onions and peppers fried crispy, a biscuit, and a side of sausage gravy. The coffee is always good and it is rare to see the bottom of your cup as every waitress in the place will ask to refill your cup. This is not a bistro. It doesn't serve alcohol and they've not yet introduced soy meats or milk. They do have turkey sausages and wheat bread. The food is 'basic', but it is consistently good. If they make a mistake, or you don't like something, tell them, and they fix it or serve you something else. If you go enough times, they remember you and treat you like a welcome friend. There are many places to go for breakfast in Hampton Roads, but for the price and the service, it's hard to beat the value, flavor, and friendliness of Tommy's in Hampton.

There was a line practically out the door at 9am on a tuesday, and after eating there I can understand why. I ordered the breakfast plate, which had pancakes, eggs, hashbrowns, a muffin and sausage. Everything I ordered was served quickly, tasted good and was well prepared, although nothing was spectacular. For the price, and what it is, its top notch. Overall, I would recommend this place for breakfast, but unless you want to wait in a standing line, get there earlier.

  • Chelsea R.

Every other Sunday morning after church, my college friends and I would come here to get our grub on. If you go on a Sunday, expect to wait in a long line that goes out the door and around the corner. I am telling you, wait.in .line. So totally worth the wait. This is home cookin' at its finest. Their combo breakfasts with the pancakes, eggs, sausage, home fries are to die for. The service is fast and friendly. You will be happy you came and will want to come back every weekend for your Tommy's fix. It's so good, I even make a special trip whenever I go back to visit the area. Yep, thousands of miles away all the way from TEXAS. Do yourself a favor and stop by Tommy's for some home cookin'.

Went here last week for breakfast finally -- thanks Yelp, this place was pretty awesome! It was pretty packed on a Wednesday morning at 9am, I can't imgine how it would be a Sunday morning. Second as we were walking in, a woman was ordering three trout combos 'to go'. As they ordered that on the Wire, my husband and I immediately assigned street cred to this establishment. We were seated, ordered and had food in front of us in 15 minutes -- tops. I got the Tommy's breakfast combo - 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, home fries, bason and a biscuit. Entirely too much food, and a steal for $5.50! I got through the pancakes and a piece of bacon -- the rest went home with us. My husband had the omelette and loved it. He also got a side of the sausage gravy, not great, but they can't bat 1000 on the first trip. Our whole check amounted to something like $15 with coffee, juice, etc

  • Clifton O.

This restaurant was great. They had awesome customer service. I had the western omelet with a short stack and it was delicious. The only reason I gave this restaurant 4 stars is because of the long lines they had. As soon as you enter the restaurant everyone is bumping each other because the kitchen is right there and waitresses are trying to get their food to the customers. When I picture this place it is kind of like a waffle house mixed with seating of an IHOP. I will be eating there again.

    (4)
  • Brian C.

I don't generally like to stick to menus, I like to mix and match until I have everything I want on my plate which usually adds up, but here my meal plus my friend's only added up to $20. The food was great and the service was fast

    (4)
  • Philip R.

Food was really good. Waitress was friendly and fast. Please take credit cards. This was my first time. I had to go out in the hall were they had an ATM and spend an extra 2.75. You had the bank put in an ATM but not a card reader? It could have been 5 stars.

    (4)
  • S R.

The food here is your regular run of the mill breakfast food but its cheap, large in quantity and options are numerous. There is always a line up so be prepared to wait and its busy but i wouldnt say the service is compromised. I'd say the wait is worth the wait. Enjoy.

  • Mickey B.

If you want food service food past off as home cooking then this is the place to go. Other then our server I have no clue how this place has won awards. Then to top it off the place doesn't accept credit cards and tells you this after you have eaten and are waiting to pay but wait they do have an ATM that if like any other place gets 10 to 20% of the service charge. The other Yelp reviewers let us down big time on this pick but if you like food service food then I can think of no other place then this myself I think the gas station next doors got dogs would have been a better pick.

Every time I am in the 757 I have to make a trip to Tommy's. I consider this place a Treasure of the City of Hampton. It is kind of like Leslie Knope's waffle joint. This place also has a huge following, which can be seen by the always present line that sits outside the door. My recommendation is to get there early (about 8-10am) before the crowds begin to show up. The staff always does a good job with turning over the tables; therefore, your weight really is not that long. The servers are really nice and take care of your every need. I have never come across a server that neglected me or was disrespectful. The cook and them always ensure that you get your food ASAP (I have never had to wait long for my food). The food is AWESOME!!.. It is like homestyled cooked food that is delicious at a very cheap and nice price!!. They never cease to amaze me. I will always continue to give my business to this restaurant. The only other tip I can give is to ensure that you bring cash.... This place is cash only!

  • Niana K.

The fried catfish dish was surprisingly fresh, thick, tender, and juicy. I typically stay away from fried food as much as possible, but this dish was worth the extra fat and calories. The line was out the door but moved quickly, and the service was excellent. Good bang for your buck, so I would absolutely come here again.

We go to Tommy's at least twice a week! You get a lot of food, which is fresh, and cheap! They have so many choices for breakfast and lunch. My only two gripes are that they are ALWAYS busy, and that they are not open for dinner! My favorite local spot......pretty much as good as it gets in Hampton because there are next to no local, non-chain restaurant available here.

  • Sheryl B.

Our first impression of Tommy's jives with many of these reviews. There was a short line the entire time, fast service, hot homemade food. This place was buzzing with business! The catfish lunch was awesome and we both enjoyed the rice pudding. I've never tried buttermilk pie before and it was a bit sweet for me. If we are in the area as often as we think we will be, we'll definitely be back to check out the rest of the menu.

Tommy's is a great place for some good but cheap breakfast. Expect to wait because the anticipation of being seated and indulging in some great food becomes part of the experience of dining at Tommy's. You get a nice portion of food and you should never leave Tommy's feeling like you did not have enough to eat. I have only been to Tommy's on Sundays so I am not sure how busy it is the rest of the week. It is extremely busy on Sundays and the staff is super friendly and the food is always fresh and made to order, if necessary. I have ordered a variety of items over time and I have never been disappointed. This includes the breakfast combos, breakfast sandwiches, corned beef hash, pancakes, french toast, BLT.....all delicious!!

I just loveee this place. The prices are unreal during this day and time and the food is yummyliscious...wait thats not a word...but whateva. Here you good good, downhome, comfort type food. No Foo-foo, hard to spell, hard to pronounce meals, just feel good food. We almost always have breakfast food as its a must at Tommys. The salmon patties and potatoes with onions (Super yummy) Although I must admit Ive tried most things on the menu the breakfast is my fav. Ive introduced several friends of the family to this place and theyve all made this a regular staple for breakfast. There is usually a wait to get in but well worth the wait. The line is almost always out of the door and down the hall on weekends.

The food, atmosphere and service was great. It was crowded on a Tuesday morning after 9AM. Staff and patrons where friendly, local, and chattering away. The best part of my traditional diner-like breakfast was the coconut cream pie! It was happily served up with guilt free encouragement!

    (4)
  • Lena L.

I really liked this little place. There was a line for lunch but it moved quickly and was totally worth the wait. I had Fried Cod and it was fresh and delicious. The prices are outstanding the service was excellent.

If you are in Hampton and do not go to this spot I feel sorry for you. The food is traditional diner food. My husband had steak and eggs, and the steak was huge. They cooked his steak and eggs just as he asked. I had the biscuits and gravy- I'm drooling thinking about them right now. Both our dishes came with a choice of hash browns or grits- we went hash browns. I've been thinking about it ever since. The service was great- and fast.

Over the past 20 years, Tommy's has changed management and even expanded its dining area. One thing that didn't change is the food. This is the one place in Hampton where you can get a stomach full of good tasting food at a reasonable price. If you roll into Tommy's on a saturday or Sunday morning, you will probably be met by a line out the door. If you have some time, wait it out and get a good breakfast for cheap.

    (5)
  • Ray N.

Food was good but nothing to really rave about. Maybe people just hyped it up too much that I expected to be blown away. Add to the fact that I don't usually eat breakfast. I had their combo, came with 2 eggs, ham, pancakes, toast and hash browns for about $5. My biggest gripe with the meal was the hash brown. It was more like hash mush.

    (3)
  • John A.

Hi, I"m a huge breakfast fanatic so Tommy's seemed like a logical choice. 1st, the food to price is unbelievable! I got 2 pecan short stacks, 2 poached eggs (medium), 2 turkey sausages, 2 biscuit, hash browns, and bottomless coffee for under 10 dollars. The service was great and the longest I had to wait for a refill was about 3 minutes. Now the not so good. The food was nothing special especially the short stacks. They weren't bad, but the pecans were clustered and it was a little dry. The rest of the meal was fine. Side note, they take check or cash ONLY but do have an ATM on site. Lastly, no real maple syrup but this seems to be a geographical problem because I have found same issue in other b-fast locals.

I was visiting a friend in Hampton and found this place. I had a country breakfast, over easy with ham. The home fries are closer to what I would call hash browns and are excellent. The biscuits and sausage gravy are divine. Unfortunately my ham was like shoe leather and i didn't think to send it back ( I hardley ever send anything back or criticize the food to the waiter because I assume that the food is prepared as intended). You have to go to the register to pay. I told the cashier I thought everything was amazing but the ham was rock hard. She told me that was NOT the way it was supposed to be and took it off the bill This is now my favorite breakfast place of all time.

Came here via Yelp, and we really enjoyed it. Good food and really quick service. Get the Tommy's special eggs, meat, toast grits and po's for about 6 bucks. really liked the food. I read that there is usually a line out the door and I know why, but we were there about 8:30 on Saturday am and only had 2 ahead of us. They are soo fast with the service I'm surprised that a line can form. Take this place over Brandons any day. Just wish they would serve Bloody Mary's , then I have to stay longer.

it is disturbing that a restaurant with such a large minority customer base would refuse to turn the channel of the television stations in their restaurant away from fox news to a station that was more in line with the customers base. i found it insulting to eat there and have to listen to this nonsensical station blaring away in the background. the little german lady at the front door had a nasty disposition. they need someone with more personality at the door. we had a party of 5 and they refused to push two tables together to seat us. we had to sit 3 at one table and 2 at another. will eat elsewhere.

Being a fan of local businesses this place definitely hits the spot in terms of breakfast joints. I don't think you'll find a better local breakfast place on the peninsula than Tommy's! I agree with Jim C. the line on the weekends is impressive but worth the wait. My most recent trip was during the week and there was no line at all so if you can avoid going during the typical brunch times on the weekends. Not waiting for this awesome food will be well worth the early wake up call! The restaurant can be a bit warm when it's cold outside, I think they overcompensated on the heat a little bit so if you're naturally warm blooded dress lightly.

Tommy's has long been a staple of breakfast food in Hampton, VA. They've been around for a long time and they're rarely spoken poorly of. The diner is fast-paced and almost always crowded, especially on the weekends. The wait staff is friendly and quick . They always do a good job of making sure to keep the coffee refills comin'. The atmosphere is bright, friendly, talkative, but somewhat loud, but the hustle and bustle is entertaining. As for the food, I'm a big fan of breakfast. I'm the type who will make breakfast for dinner so I'm easily impressed by eggs and bacon. I don't think it's too hard to do breakfast food right, but it is possible to mess it up. This is certainly not the case with Tommy's. Everything is just right--the eggs aren't overcooked, the bacon isn't undercooked, and the grits have just the right consistency. This is definitely a place worth checking out, even if you have to wait through a line.

They are always busy but the food is worth the wait I have been going to Tommy's since I was a little girl! I have been there thru several different owners and they all have kept this place going strong and the food just like Granma used to make...WONDERFUL FAMILY RESTAURANT!!!

Not really sure what the hype is about this place. Standard breakfast at decent prices. We had a tough time getting a waiter/waitress...waited 15 minutes before anyone asked us if we had been waited on yet.

Ate here 5-10 times and plan to occasionally return. Good price to portion ratio. The food could be hotter by the time it reaches the table and cash only? Come on, get with the times!

OMG! Tommy's is definitely a great place for some inexpensive breakfast, lunch & early dinner. This is far best the best place for breakfast in the Hampton Roads area. I regularly eat at this restaurant for breakfast and the portions are large for a small amount. You will not be dissappointed. There will be a line but it is worth the wait.

Warm home cooking makes this small family owned business a sucess. The doors open at 6am and close at 3pm. Breakfast menu all day as well as lunch. My wife and I just ate there for less than $10 and it was delicious. I ordered Tommy's breakfast platter (2 pancakes, choice of meat, biscuit or toast, eggs any way and hash browns) which was very reasonably priced. Service was excellent even during the peak lunch hour. I will def come back to this small gem. I tend to stay clear of Mercury blvd at least east of the I-64 bridge but was referred to this place by a co-worker. So glad we tried it out.

Excellent local breakfast/lunch place, thank you Yelp for another great find on the road! You know its great when the locals are lined up every time I drive by. AMAZING!!!! I'm sitting here all the way in San Diego craving their grits, red eye gravy and fried pork chops. They just don't have food like that here in Cali. The BEST breakfast place ever!!!! The line can be a little long and the hours are pretty short, I believe they close at 2 or 3pm. It's a local little treasure in Hampton Virginia. I sure do miss this place. You can't go wrong with their menu because with my experience everything has been pretty phenomenal! The servings are large and the food is to diiiie!!! Oh yeah, they only take cash but they have an atm in the restaurant.

You will not find a better place for breakfast. Staff Is super friendly. They only serve breakfast and lunch so do bother trying I go here after 3pm. Also they always have a line out the door on the weekends so be prepared for a wait. It's worth the wait though.

Good but not extraordinary. This is the kind of place that people are more in love with the institution than with reality. Not that there is anything wrong here but there are many, many better breakfasts to be had on the Peninsula. The Krispy Kreme next door being one of them, always fresh! Yum.
