    Empanadas de pollo is great!

Loved this place. I always judge a Mexican restaurant by its chips and salsa. This place had some of the best chips and salsa ever! Everything was very fresh - ingredients, authentic mexican and friendly services. What a great find. Try the jalapeno creme fraiche. My only concern was the seating. Very tiny area and don't sit near the door. If you don't get folks bumping into you as they enter, you get the cold air coming in or ppl hoovering around waiting for a free table.

The Soup and Taco is a small restaurant on Caroline street. The service was both friendly and fast. The food was fresh and delicious; get the black bean soup- it's fantastic.

Great food, great drinks, cute place. Not good for groups larger than four, (the restaurant literally seats about 20 total) but if you want delicious and inexpensive food -- this is your place.

A very cute and small place that I tried on a whim with a friend. The waitress was polite and we were seated very quickly. We received our chips, salsa, and drinks swiftly. I ordered a burrito and my friend ordered the enchiladas. Both had decent servings, along with a side of yummy cilantro-lime rice. I ordered an additonal side of fried plantain, since I grew up with them, but I've never had plantains like these. They came with a yummy sauce (crema) but were oily and a bit dark. Nothing like I'm used to. Overall, great place, some of the best food I've had in a while. However, no free refills on anything really except water. Even soda refills weren't free (but I assume this is because they are served in a can).

I've never had yucca before and I will again after eating here. The food is delicious and the menu is small but amazing! I highly recommend the Yucca Fries! A super tasty appetizer! At first glance, this is a very hole in the wall sort of place. Not a lot of seating, but a very cozy atmosphere. The wait staff is very accommodating and the food is fantastic!

  • Emily T.

The salsa is excellent, tastes homemade. The service was good. I ordered the fish tacos with the tortilla soup on the side and they were amazing! My husband and I will definintely be back soon!

I have been dining at Soup & Taco regularly for several years. The food is always reliable. You can't go wrong with their speciality - the soup and taco combo. Margaritas and guacamole are also excellent. I like going here because Fredericksburg is fraught with chain restaurants. Come here if you want a delicious, authentic meal in a local family owned restaurant. My only gripe is that since their space is so small, they really cannot accommodate parties larger than 4.

I miss the old menu from the early to mid 2000's. this restaurant was one of my all time fav's while going to Mary Wash for four years. Had a huge pregnancy craving today and drove up to get tacos, quesadilla, and cheese dip. They no longer do the double-layer tortilla with sharp cheese in between. It was disappointing. They have updated the decor, though, and it is now a regular sit-down restaurant instead of mostly take-out. For regular Mexican (as opposed to the trendy kind it was before) I'd rather get El Charro.

This is the best Mexican food I've had, and the only Mexican food that doesn't upset my stomach! I love how they always have deals going on; it makes me try new things, and I have yet to try something I didn't like. My favorite is the Chicken Ranchero, with a white sangria, and for dessert the sopapillas. I don't plan on ever going to another Meixcan restaurant.

Excellent soup, but little too pricey for what you get.

Soup and Taco is a little hole in the wall with lots of character. The restaurant does not fit many people, so it is not ideal for large groups. Soup and Taco is great at exactly what the title says it is great for.. soup and tacos. The tortilla soup is delicious and I like chicken tacos or chicken chimichangas. The service is great -- water glasses and bowls are chips are never empty. It is a small-town local business that everyone should support!

This place is by the far best Mexican cuisine I've had. Try it.

We found this restaurant after we stopped in Fredericksburg for the night - wow, what a find!! I think we will always stop in Fredericksburg on our way back from SC to CT, just so we can eat here!!!! We tried the specials offered - chicken empanadas- flaky crust filled with flavorful chicken, and arepas de pollo - homemade yellow corn tortillas with a tasty chicken filling. My husband had a mango margarita and I had 2 glasses of the white sangria - I wished the meal would never end! Chips and salsa were tasty too, and the pina colada flan was good, but not as flan-like as I thought it should be! Great service and reasonable prices!

A hidden treasure! Our family was in Fredericksburg this summer on vacation and wanted an inexpensive but good meal. We used our phones and found Soup and Taco. We were so glad we did! The Mexican food was incredible and the prices were too. The ambiance isn't much but the friendliness of the gal who served us and the delicious food were more than enough. Thank you for a good meal and a good memory.

It was a beautiful day today so I decided to walk in a random direction to find my lunch. My divining rod (known as "yelp iPhone app" in the tongue of the ancient Jonathan H. peoples) led me to a little hole-in-the-wall cantina called Soup & Taco. The inside is extremely clean and light, with a color palette similar to my teeth before I started drinking all that coffee. The furniture and decorations are exclusively provided by Ikea, perhaps through some unspoken pact. The friendly cashier made some suggestions in lieu of the guava juice I wanted but they didn't have. I settled for a lime Jarrito instead, and I was well pleased. Despite the name "Soup & Taco," I ordered neither soup nor a taco. Instead I ordered el pollo con chipotle y arroz verde y habichuelas rojo. All three came out covered with some cheese that I ended up scraping off. The chicken was lightly fried, and it tasted delicious when I mixed the beans, rice and chicken all together into one of the three fresh tortillas provided on the side. The meal comes with complimentary nachos and salsa. The salsa was lightly spicy with a hearty mixture of onion chunks and cilantro, but I could tell the chips came from one of the many Latin groceries in the area rather than being freshly made here. Any place that serves chicken in large portions and has Ikea furniture is a place for me.

We had a great lunch here, not your usual Tex-Mex drowned in cheese and sauce. The soup special was a cream shrimp and was excellent. The tacos were great too. It's a small, very narrow place with lots of character. We had friendly service and reasonably fast too.

  • Sam M.

I like this place because it's cheap, fast, and the food is fine. The tacos are pretty straightforward fare, but they do simple food well at this establishment. This place is worth your time.

My boyfriend and I have been looking for a Mexican place within walking distance to apartment in downtown. We recently tried Soup and Taco. We weren't very blown away as others were. The chips and salsa were so so. The mood and service were blah. I ordered the pork tacos, they were ok, but pretty plain. He got the chicken quesadilla, which was pretty good. I also got a margarita but Im sure that it even had any liquor in it. The only reason Im giving this place 2 stars is location and the quesadilla. Not worth a stop.

  • Kristi J.

This is my new favorite taco place in Fredericksburg. The black bean soup was amazing. I also had the fish tacos which were equally notable. The tacos come with two tortillas melted together by pepperjack cheese. SO DELICIOUS....why didn't I think of this?? The chips and salsa are also pretty fantastic. I can't wait to go back!

I've eaten here twice and I'll tell you both meals were unimpressive. The first time we were downtown Fredericksburg and we both love Mexican food so we tried it based on the great reviews here on Yelp. We tried at least five different menu items and not a single one made either of us say, "mm, that's good!". Generally forced down our food and left. On our second visit, my lovely girlfriend was next door at the salon and we had just a few mins for lunch so we thought we'd give it another shot. I had a steak, which was very low quality meat and honestly they can't even do the rice & beans right. I will never eat here again, I'd rather sit there hungry watching others eat and then snack when I got home. Authentic = bland. I'm sorry, this is just not good food. I don't know how this place has gotten so many great reviews. There are much better Mexican restaurants in the area.

I've been to Soup and Taco before and limited myself to tacos (which are delicious). But this time the black bean soup was really calling out to me, so I got a cup of that and an order of tamales. The chips and salsa they give you are quite good. The salsa has a really smoky flavor. First we got the soup, and it was incredible. Incredibly flavorful, with a nice dollop of crema and some chives. I want to eat this always. The tamales were good too, slightly sweet, and I'd recommend them for an appetizer. If they had cheese or veggies in them they'd make a great meal, too. You should absolutely go to Soup and Taco if you're in Fredericksburg!

Had a great taco ensalada here. Get the vegetarian one. It was superb! Service wasn't too bad.

A deliciously simple idea. My chicken tortilla soup was amazing.

  • Adrienne K.

I wasn't horribly impressed, but overall, I wasn't disappointed either. I went with my boyfriend who visited from Jersey. I got the chipotle shrimp enchiladas, and he got some chicken dish I can't remember right now. He said his was a bit bland at first, but after adding some salt and pepper he enjoyed it quite a bit. My enchiladas were good, but I could have done without the shrimp in them, I think. Not for any particular reason except that they didn't add anything to do the dish. I liked the beans and rice, and the chips were pretty tasty, though a little cold. The salsa was average. The prices weren't awful, so that was an added bonus. I guess the only reason this place is getting 3 stars is because while their food was pretty good, it was nothing that stuck out in my mind as a place I HAVE to go again.

Soup and Taco is a terrific little restaurant which fits in nicely downtown Fredericksburg. I usually get their fish tacos and black bean soup. Order a cold Tecate and you've got yourself a fantastic meal.

Loved this hole in the wall... Excellent flavorful sauces, crispy homey chips, fresh ingredients. Worthwhile.

  • Kate H.

Stumbled on this place while visiting the library in Old Towne. YUM!! I ordered the shrimp soft tacos and was surprised by how fresh the cilantro was and how neat the plate was presented. Defiantly not expected for $5. I also had the Pozole soup and mojotio, both were fantastic. Seems like you cannot go wrong here especially for under $10!

  • R. M.

I don't eat a lot of meat other than seafood so I can't comment on the entire menu. Having said that, almost everything I've had here under the current management has been fantastic. The fish tacos are consistently awesome (better than the shrimp tacos). The fried fish dinner is really good too. I highly recommend a side of the rice and beans to round out any tacos. As for the soup, I've only tried a few of the options but never been disappointed. They occasionally have a black bean soup that is really delicious - perfectly seasoned and not too rich. The real highlight, however, is their cream of crab soup. Perfectly seasoned with a touch of sherry, this soup is like knee-buckling good. It is super rich, however, and requires a committed appetite. So good. An added bonus at Soup and Taco: delicious lemonade and margaritas.

I've eaten here a couple times while taking day trips to Fredericksburg. The food is pretty good though nothing particularly special. The server doesn't appear to understand English, as she completely messed up our order. Somehow "tilapia" sounded like Taco to her and she didn't know what "no ranch dressing" meant.

  • Kristin V.

Most likely, you can tell by the name that the things to get are the soup and the tacos. While they have a full menu...you really cannot beat the tacos! My favorites are the shrimp tacos and the fish tacos. Now...these are not your mama's hard shell, ground beef, cheese tacos. These are real meat (beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, or fish), cabbage, sour cream sauce, salsa, tortillas with melted cheese in the middle tacos! They are absolutely delicious! It's so good I might even dare to say that Soup and Taco is my favorite downtown Fredericksburg restaurant (sorry Sammy T's!).

Oh my.... This place was very good! Loved the pupusas! Great place to get a bite to eat! Brought the whole family and they were all satisfied!

Lately I have been craving Mexican food with no apparent reason. I was walking in beautiful downtown Fredericksburg and this restaurant caught my attention, even though it was burning hot outside, high 90 degrees on that day... no soup for me, next..... I stopped here anyway to soothe my craving. I ordered their lemonade which was very refreshing. I then ordered the beef chimichanga. The burrito had a beautiful deep fried golden texture and the meat was well cooked, but not of a great quality. My chimi was served to me on a bed of fresh lettuce, cheese, beans, rice, sour cream and hot sauce. It was good but not memorable. Free appetizer of chips and hot salsa was served to me with my drink, now... that was good chips and salsa. I ate it all.

This place is the real deal, an independent restaurant that gets it right. Soup & Taco has had several owners with varying degrees of quality, with the current owners have taken the concept to a sit-down (but still take-out) restaurant. The menu has been expanded to include more traditional Mexican fare. The result has me returning quite frequently. My favorites are the soup of the day, all delicious with a real home-made taste and appearance, the fried tilapia, and of course the the fish tacos which have been brought back to their former delicious selves. My only disappointment was the carne asada. It was over-cooked and the meat was an inferior cut. However, everything else I have ordered has been excellent. I highly recommend visiting this little tucked away restaurant, it is a great place.

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!! The tacos, chips and salsa, tortilla soup, margaritas are all great! Me and my sister come here is a tradition when she comes back to town:)

  • Kimmy M.

Went there over the weekend with the hubby.... I had the soft tacos, he had the chimichanga. Both were delectable! The portions were good sized, the chips and salsa were yummy and the service was prompt. The ingredients all tasted like they were picked that morning. I can't wait to go back! (and next time I'm trying the house Sangria!)

  • Lee Ann M.

I've eaten here two times, and it was two times too many. I've sampled many of the dishes, and they were all bland and greasy. I tried the tortilla soup once, figuring they couldn't get that wrong, but yes, they did. Seriously, do not waste your time or money eating at this place...maybe all the dogs that walk the streets of Fred all the time would eat the food...maybe not though..

Awesome secret find! We were walking down the street by our BnB looking for lunch and came upon this place. It was superb. I had crab enchiladas and my husband had this El Salvadorian thing called Pupusas, I believe. It was very good. The chips and salsa were delicious and plentiful. Overall a very nice lunch experience.

  • Jeffrey B.

For a long time I had only ever tried their tacos which are very good. I recommend the fish tacos especially. During my most recent trip, I tried the soup. It was better than good. I would enjoy eating their soup many more times. This is one of the best lunch places in Fredericksburg.

Fresh, homemade food, including salvadorean pupusas, in a neat, sunny dining space, a pleasant surprise in old town fredericksburg.

  • Cristina G.

I am from SoCal and miss good Mexican food terribly, This place was such a pleasant surprise! The pollo asado was awesome, the sopapillas were great, and I like the sangria. Everything is very fresh. The place is super small, so try not to bring a stroller in! The prices, like most places downtown, are a bit high. But it's delicious, good service (hard not to with the place being so tiny) and they have a great house salsa.

    (4)
  • Jack F.

This place is really small but a cool little place to check out. Definitely try the crab soup if they have it available. Pretty good chips and salsa, and we of course also got the tacos and they were good quality with a good portion of beans and rice on the side. Didn't try anything else on the menu, it seemed wise to stick with their specialties.

Located in downtown Fredericksburg, VA, this is a quaint little spot to get out of the heat and enjoy a decent lunch and converse or surf the net using their wi-fi. The food is average (not bad), and the place is small but comfortable. It is not reminiscent of anywhere I have been, probably because I was too busy hanging out with my friend to really pay attention to the decor. :)

  • Susan W.

My husband and enjoyed our lunch at Soup and Taco. We ordered the empanadas and enchiladas which were delicious. The place was very comfortable and the service was perfect. When I am in Fredericksburg, I look forward to going back.

I love this place. The fish tacos are superb. They even got a write up about them on Northern Virginia Magazine. A Fredericksburg gem!

First off, soup and tacos are two of my favorite things. Needless to say, I was pretty excited when I saw this place. I ordered the shrimp bisque and two carnitas tacos. Both of these dishes were tasty, but not extraordinary. The carnitas tacos were served with tiny fried potatoes on top, which gave the tacos a nice crispy crunch. I stopped here randomly on a long road trip, and while it hit the spot, I probably will never make it here again. If I lived in the area I am sure I would be back again and again.

  • Stephen H.

I'm going to side with the positive reviews for this place. I'm a local and eat here with my family a couple of times a month. Highlights include their wonderfully rich crab or shrimp bisque; black bean soup; fish tacos and pupusas. I like the wide selection of vegetarian alternatives including tacos and salads that use grilled veggies in place of meat. Their black bean soup is vegetarian and quite delicious. The service is always good. Recommended!

Saw the sign outside for their Tostones, green plantains fried with some crema for dipping and just had to go in. Ordered those and some Pupusas for a late afternoon snack. The chips and salsa were great, nice smoky salsa with a bit of a kick. Then came the real stars, the Tostones were great, the best part being the very flavorful crema. The pupusas, especially the pork ones, were so tender and packed with goodness. We would happily go back again anytime. The service was attentive and friendly and while the restaurant is very small, it has a nice comfy feel.

I went here for lunch with a buddy after touring the Fredericksburg battlefield. The food was delicious and the service was great. I had one fish taco and one carne asada taco. The fish was grilled nicely and the steak was tender. Overall, a great place to go for lunch. The place is not that big and filled up quick. The wait was about 30 minutes by the time I left.

  • Jacki A.

I love this place! They have the best rice and beans, the chips are always fresh, their chipotle salsa is a nice change from the norm and I have not gotten a bad meal yet. The fish Tacos are amazing. My only suggestions for improvement are: 1)Sodas do not have free refills 2)The restaurant is too small. I have a family of 5 and they do not have a table big enough to accomidate all of us. I need to get a sitter in order to go for dinner :( Their biggest table is a table of 4. I love this place so much I want to share it with my friends but if we were to go out to eat together, we'd have to sit at different tables. Hopefully once they get enough profit they will consider moving to a larger location.

Good soup and Mexican fare. Wish they had a "hidden menu" with traditional El Salvadorian fare that would make this place a foodie gem. Would come back in an instant!

  • Adam R.

Love this place. Hands down, the best homemade Mexican in Fredericksburg. Their tortilla soup is good (could use a little more kick, but that's just my opinion). Their tacos are fresh and taste great. They use quality ingredients and love their margaritas. The sangria is tasty too! The restaurant is small, so group of 6 or more might have a tough time being seated together.

Took the family there to dinner once. My daughter loved hers. My husband ordered steak tacos adn the meat was burnt. I ordered the tortilla soup and it was good. So now, if I go, I just get the soup.

I just had the MOST HORRIFIC EXPERIENCE at a little restaurant I used to love, Soup and Taco. As a Mary Washington student, I have frequented Soup and Taco many times through out the years and had grown quite fond of the place. I had even recommended the eatery to my roommates this past week and was excited to go downtown this Sunday to get something. I'm a huge fan of their cheese dip and decided to order that along with a Mandarin Jarrito. Once I received my to-go order I noticed that the cheese dip was in a smaller container (looked like a container a side of sour cream would be put in, perhaps only 10 chips worth of dip ) than I had remembered. I asked the nice lady who had been helping me if there was a larger container than that and she said no, at which point I decided that this wasn't what I was expecting for the price and asked if I could return it. The lady spoke to the chef and then to a man sitting out front who I assume is the owner. He came up to the register and I informed him about the situation. I asked him if I could return the drink as well (which was unopened) because I wasn't satisfied with my purchase. He told me that "I don't want business from people like you anyway". He told me that "We have a double order that's bigger". I opened the menu to double check and told him that no double order was listed on the menu. He said "People that order the cheese dip know about it". I told him that I had been there many times before, ordered the cheese dip and did not know about. He repeated to me that "i do not want YOUR business" and said sarcastically told me "Have a great day and good luck" I walked out of their completely appalled at the way I had been treated. I will never step foot in that place again. That is the wrong way to treat customer. I've worked in a restaurant before and know what it's like. For someone to be so disrespectful to a customer is horrific. The whole time I remained calm and attempted to kindly convey my viewpoint to this man who was being nothing but rude to me. The product that I received was not what I had expected and I ASKED if I could return it. Instead of being offered this unadvertised double order, which I'm sure I would have gladly taken them up on, I was told that business was not wanted then the gentleman attempted to humiliate me by suggesting this was my fault because I ordered the wrong thing. After I told him I was not made aware of such an item, he again attempted to humiliate me and repeated he did not want MY business. This is not the way you handle customers nor is it a good business practice to insult customers. If they have such careless disregard from their customers, in a customer based industry, it makes you wonder about their other business practices! I would implore others to stay away from this place. There are much better restaurants in downtown with much better food and exponentially better management.

This is one of the better Mexican places in the area. They have a rather limited menu of soup, tacos and burritos, however, what they do they do quite well. The bowl of soup was decent, the chicken taco was excellent and the carne asada taco was also quite good. The guac and chips platter that I got was also fresh and excellent. They have a few downsides, like no outdoor table, no horchata, too much lettuce and small tables, but the quality of their food was really good. I would totally eat here again.

  • Michael O.

I have been to Soup and Taco dozens of times, and every meal has been delicious. Admittedly, I have only tried the Soup, and the Tacos, but they are superb. My only complaint is the restaurant size, which, while very charming, can also make the wait quite long during peak hours. Soup and Taco is a great hole in the wall restaurant, and my first choice when bringing friends into Fredericksburg for a casual meal.

About a 2-2.5: I was pretty excited in checking out The Soup & Taco, a favorite taco place among the locals located in OT Fredericksburg. It seemed as if from all the stores we've visited, the staff recommended this place as their top pick for eats. The restaurant is narrow and on the smaller end, and the menu offers appetizers, soups, tacos, various entrees, desserts, and beer/wine. A basket of complimentary tortilla chips and salsa were served - the chips were fresh and tasty, while the salsa had a kick, but a bit more watered down and heavily cilantro-focused. We started off with an order of Pupusas, which came with 3 - 2 pork and cheese, and 1 beans and cheese; the pork and cheese was okay, more cheese than the shredded pork; the beans and cheese, while tasting okay, the filling looked pretty unappetizing (blotted brown). These came with a side of slaw and a watered down sauce. We also tried their Sopa de Tortilla (chicken broth with chile pasilla, corn, chicken, tortilla strips, queso fresco, and a couple of chunks of avocado; I found this to be very watery, and I wasn't a fan of the queso fresco cheese and the soggy strips of the the tortilla in the soup) and their soup of the day, the creamed corn (this was more on the sweeter end, ever-so-slightly thick with little corn niblets; I preferred this more than the chicken tortilla). For the tacos, we tried the Asado (grilled steak (they have grilled chicken as well); this automatically comes in two flour tortillas with pepper jack cheese in between, topped with jalapeno crema, nappa cabbage, pico de gallo, and cilantro (we opted out of the last 2); the steak had a nice mesquite flavor to them, but I wasn't a fan of the Americanized tortilla preparation); Chorizo (these came in a corn tortilla, topped with onions; the chorizo was way too salty, and I wasn't a fan of the taste); and, Carnitas (shredded pork in corn tortillas, topped with fried potatoes, onions, and avocado; the carnitas were way too wet and extremely bland; the fried potatoes (which were more like breakfast potatoes) and the avocado did not really complement the shredded pork). The main issue I had was that the tacos were just too expensive - 2 goes for about $7, meaning each one is at $3.50; they were all underwhelming in taste; on the other hand, if they were super delicious, I wouldn't have mind it so much. T___T For drinks, I tried the Hibiscus Lemonade (which tasted like cranberry juice) and the Horchata (extremely watered down). Service was more on the brisk/efficient side. I'm glad I was able to check Soup and Taco out, but will not be back! +overpriced tacos! T____T +grilled beef asado taco +automatic pepper jack cheese in between the flour tortillas for some T____T +watered down Sopa de Tortilla T____T +watered down horchata T____T +no substitutions T____T +2-hour parking along Caroline

One of the best Latin food places I've been to. Authentic pupusas, tacos and other dishes. My wife and me plan a stop here as often as possible when traveling. It's just amazing. And compared to Americanized Mexican restaurant food, much preferred. Even the more authentic places like Mez are generic in comparison. They have a good selection of Jarritos (soft drinks from Mexico). They come in a variety of fruit flavors and are made with real sugar. A friendly, casual atmosphere and good wait staff. Topping off a light lunch with Tres Leches is a pleasure.

This place has been my default favorite Mexican/Salvadoran/good-food place for several years. There are the usual Mexican dishes such as enchiladas and tacos, and delicious Salvadoran pupusas. The big difference is the daily menu, a spin on the traditional. Try Argentine empanadas, or yuca fries. Be prepared to wait 10 to 15 minutes during peak meal times. Still worth the wait.

This restaurant is so tiny you would miss it if you weren't specifically looking for it! Located in downtown Fredericksburg, just around the corner from the public parking lot, is this hole in the wall. The door barely closes, there are about eight tables crammed in there and the lighting is horrible. If you're looking for ambiance, go somewhere else. The girl at the register was not friendly, they looked bored and annoyed that I was even coming in, but even so they were cordial. I got the Pupusas, which are not Mexican, but from El Salvador. It came with two pork and cheese, and one bean and cheese, pickled cabbage and a tomato sauce. I also got sour cream and pico de Gallo with my meal, because I always do. The food was amazing! The tomato sauce was a bit spicy but I could handle it with a little sour cream! The cabbage had the strongest vinegar taste which I love, all in all, the food can't be beat for pupusas. They only get four stars from me because of the service.

Excellent food! Lovely little "hole in the wall" place. Had the Chipotle shrimp enchiladas per recommendation from another reviewer and - WOW! so delicious! Definitely will be back for more!

My wife and I have been going to Soup and Tacos for 2 years now. I go for the deliciously mouth melting fish tacos. The fish they use is grilled tilapia. Accompanying the grilled fish on the taco are pica de gallo, cheese. I usually request avocado as well. The fish tacos never disappoints. Get two tacos with the soup of the day, it'll fill your belly and put a smile on your face!

The chipotle chicken was cooked so well! So tender and juicy! Carne asada and fish tacos were also great! Guacamole and their complimentary salsa and chips are perfect starters. Liked their horchata also. It is a small establishment, so there may be a wait in getting a table. Staff were very nice as well.

One of my favorites in Fredericksburg. It's definitely a hole in the wall, with no good place to wait for one of the 8 tables inside, but the food is fantastic. I like to order to go and eat at one of the picnic tables by the river. The prices are on the low side of average for the area.

Good food, good service. But space is limited. Small parties only. No complaints though. Food was super fresh and salsa is dank.

Everyone's familiar with the classic soup + salad or soup + sandwich lunch combo, but soup + taco sounds so surreal yet simultaneously so intuitive. Those of us who listened to pop music in the 90s may recall Sophie B. Hawkins' "As I Lay Me Down" in which the chorus echoes some incoherent chant that many have assumed to be saying "I love tacos!". The fact that this wondrously surreal Mexican cafe appears in Fredericksburg, VA sounds just as improbable. For my first visit, I went with the namesake combo, choose any one taco and bowl of soup for 7.95 (option for two tacos with a CUP of soup for 1 dollar more). The tacos here come in chicken, steak, shrimp, carnitas, chorizo, fish (tilapia), and veggie. The construction of the taco is a bit paradoxical since the filling is like a west coast fish taco with cabbage, lettuce, tomato, diced jalapeno, and a light crema but is enclosed by a double layer of soft tacos with melted monterey jack in between. It's as if the taco couldn't decide whether to be light and healthy or rich and decadent. I would have made the crema a bit thicker and drizzled it on top of the taco not only to make it less messy but to also make each bite more consistent and while the cheese in between two flour tortillas sounds reminiscent of a quesadilla, the quality of the tortillas tastes store-bought and would be tastier if either layer were crisped over a griddle or a crunchy taco were substituted for added crunch. The soups are where this place truly shines since they routinely feature black bean and chicken tortilla, whereas I opted for their soup of the day which was a peanut soup with chicken, rice, and yellow peppers. My only prior experience with peanut soup was a sweet Chinese dessert soup, but I found the savory Mexican rendition to be quite lip-smackingly good. The broth had a touch of heat, nuttiness from the peanuts, sweetness from the yellow peppers, and rounded out by the natural umami of the chicken. Add in al dente rice and fresh cilantro, and it was a hearty homemade soup I would order many times over. Wish the taco had a crispier component so that one could dunk the taco into the soup much like a solid grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup. Mexican beverages and desserts abound on the menu if one is looking for more and complimentary chips and salsa (strong chipotle pepper component which is good/bad depending on your palate) come with the meal so one does not leave hungry. Solid lunch spot that I would rate 3.5 stars purely on food alone but half star bump for concept and location.

The salsa is some of the best I've ever had. The food is delicious, the tacos are good - better if you put some salsa in them. Their tortillas are fresh and homemade. The tortilla soup is very good. Overall, we love this place. It is definitely small though, which may be an issue for some people. We generally don't have to wait to get a seat. The dinner traffic comes later around 630 or 7 so an early dinner is better - but that's true for about any good place to eat in downtown.

Not authentic Mexican food. Chorizo taco was ok. Carne asada tacos were good. My mistake on the second time was to order take out. By the time I got back to my place, they were soggy.

It's okay. Catered to the American palate but they do offer traditional dishes. I would choose a higher quality of beef. Two tacos for $5.95 or $3.00 ea. I would expect quality meat. I would come back if Im in the area; however, there are better choices. Buen provecho.

As the current duchess of this establishment, I figured it was tjme for a review. If you are hungry and looking for a filling, satisfying meal in a timely manner with affordable pricing, this is your spot. First off, the complimentary chips and salsa are out of this world delicious - my husband and I regularly kill the whole basket, oops! The flavors of the main entrees are pretty mild (no spice), but spicy isn't really a contributing factor for me. But the food is fresh, and while it's not mind meltingly good as some of the other reviewers may claim, it is certainly delicious, considering it's in Virginia (having spent 4 years in San Diego, I've had my fair share of Mexican food). Recommended are the chipotle shrimp enchiladas and their seafood selection in general. Not so much are chicken dishes that aren't shredded - a little on the dry side. Their mango salad is fantastic. Good empanadas, skip the tamales.

Yes, Soup and Taco is very appropriately named - they have awesome soups and tacos! It's a spot with an unassuming name, an unassuming exterior, yet it's packed with awesomeness! You need to order chips/salsa - chips are super crispy and the salsa is very flavorful. At first glance, the black bean soup looks like a boring black hole in a bowl but it's packed with spices and is unexpectedly flavorful. My go-to is the fish tacos; they're wrapped in two soft shells with a layer of cheese between which is the key to these tacos. Super fresh, flavorful, and healthy! Like Jason Y. says in his review, they're really the best in the area. This place is small so try to avoid peak hours; turnover is fairly quick though so don't be discouraged if there's a wait. Check out this place the next time you're strolling through Fredericksburg; you'll be in for an authentic Mexican treat!

This place is a weekly favorite. I really love their corn, broccoli, and crab soups. I've never had a soup I didn't inhale though. They make crab enchiladas which are great too. My favorite is the carnita tacos. The more I eat them- the more I become addicted. The yuca is always super crispy with jalapeno mayo. Nom. I would live at Soup and Taco if I could. Thankfully I can always just walk here. I cry every Monday when the shop is closed but Tuesday night it's time to feast! This place is so awesome!!

  • Kima N.

Freaking love this place! Their salsa is awesome and despite other reviews I actually quite enjoy their horchata, although i think it's made differently then the original recipes I've had. I usually get their specials and am rarely disappointed. And their papusas are on point especially if you're hungover. BUT! If you don't like spicy foods let them know or choose something else. If it says chipotle or you're getting salsa verde just be prepared. I love spicy but the hubby doesn't and has made this mistake a couple times.

I'm actually very angry about our experience there. I have been coming to soup and taco for years with different friends and members of my family and although the service has never been outstanding, this time, it was ridiculously bad. The servers were both extremely rude to us for absolutely no reason. We asked for something one time and the server yelled across the restaurant with the meanest look on her face. I guess soup and taco is so busy and business is doing so well that they don't really care how they treat people. They took forever to do anything. They tried to give us food before any chips and salsa, which we requested at the beginning of our meal since we hadn't received any after sitting there for close to 10 minutes (it's what they yelled at us for.) They brought us appetizers we hadn't ordered. They left all 3 of our waters completely empty throughout our entire meal. We pushed all 3 glasses to the edge of the table so that they would notice. The server looked at them and ignored them. Then, we've been done eating for at least 15 minutes, asked for the check, and nothing! It was so obvious that they wanted nothing to do with us. I had to get up with the credit cards from everyone at the table and walk up to the register to pay because we had absolutely had enough. I couldn't be more disappointed. I understand that this is a small, casual restaurant but this was the most horrendous service I have ever had. I've been working in the service industry for the past 8 years, I know what being extremely busy is like. I've done the whole 15 table section thing where I think I am not going to make it but part of being in this industry is being hospitable. No matter what is going on in the back of the house, you are supposed to put a smile on your face or at least be kind to the guests. The guests are what keeps your business going. These two servers are better off working at the department of motor vehicles where they can fit in with the rest of the moody jerks.

Wow, what a find. This is a twist on the soup and sandwich, soup and tacos. I really enjoyed eating lunch at this establishment the other day. I had the soup of the day (a corn/shrimp type chowder), which was absolutely delicious and very interesting. You get two tacos with the soup and I chose the chorizo and steak tacos. I loved the steak taco and the chorizo taco was good too, but not as good as the steak one. The restaurant is bright, looks clean and has a neat atmosphere. It was a great lunch that was reasonable, good tasting and just plain fun. I'll be back.

If you try to share the soup and taco combo the soup nazi will try to kick you out. It's not a joke, it's not funny, and it totally ruins the fun of the place. Mexican culture encourages sharing food, so by default, not allowing is defrauds their authenticity. Fish tacos on FLOUR tortillas? Not authentic. No meat in tamales? Not authentic. Receiving your tamales unwrapped? Not authentic.

I like it- Good food Cool lil place to hang out for a quick bite Feels like some 'ol places in LA- I'd try it out- It's a small place and can get busy-but I'd wait

Went for lunch today and was happy with our service and food. We didn't wait too long and the staff was very attentive and super nice. Their chips and salsa is delicious! Not your typical salsa-it is made with ancho chiles. The cheese dip is really good also. We all had tacos-carnitas, fish and shrimp. They were delicious and extremely fresh! Will definitely be one of our new spots! Margaritas were also delicious!

Chips and salsa are brought to you when you sit down. Menu is simple and easy to understand. Small space so groups of 4 or less is best. The food was really good. I highly recommend trying this place!

We went here and got takeout because the place was crowded. Daughter had the Empanada and liked it. Hubs had the Fish Taco and liked it a lot. I had the Enchiladas Rancheras with Chicken and liked it, too. Will definitely return!

We had a pleasant experience there though it was busy. The only minor complaint that I would have was that we had to keep flagging down our waitress if we wanted to order or wanted the check. It was busy so it was understandable. Otherwise, the food was good.

I love this place. The food is fresh and flavors are distinct. I love the chips and salsa. It is really casual and as such we don't expect the best service, however they respond well to kindness and a warm smile.

wow. What an unenjoyable experience. My wife and I came because of the good reviews on yelp but we do not understand what the fuss is about. The atmosphere is awkward, simply put. We were greeted (unenthusiastically) by one of the servers who gave us our menus. The restaurant itself was small, and you could see into the kitchen, where the cook was chatting it up on her cell phone. We ordered our drinks and one our servers brought me a dr. Pepper but forgot my wife's margarita....probably because she was crouching down texting behind the counter. Unprofessional, to say the least. We hoped the food would redeem the place, but it was just ok. My wife ordered the enchiladas verdes and I ordered the chimichanga- and it wasn't bad, not just as good as we were expecting. My wife didn't really enjoy her margarita, but we're from Texas so, we love our margins there haha. Well, to put the cherry on top, one of the servers took our card to the lady at the front to be run...and after she ran it, it sat there a bit and after a while, she just dropped it off at the table behind us. My wife started telling me "that's our card, that's our card!" - and at this point, I can hear the servers and the cashier lady arguing about table's tickets. The table who had our card dropped off accidentally, had gotten up and were leaving so I decided to go after them OUT of the restaurant since the servers hadn't stopped fussing about what happened to which tables ticket. It was obnoxious because by the time we left, the whole restaurant was staring us trying to figure out what the commotion was about....will NOT be going again.

They serve the best posole verde I've ever had. Slight tomatillo flavor but very round and savory broth, tender hominy and carnitas-like pulled pork.

I have been here a few times, and each time the food was good, but the service wasn't particularly friendly or welcoming. Definitely come during off-peak times (afternoon-ish) because the place is a tiny little hole in the wall and fills up easily. As for the food, the menu isn't extensive but there is a good variety. Flavors are mild as noted by other reviewers; this is a negative for me. I haven't asked them to spice things up because it seems like they are already doing me a favor by taking my order. I don't think it's that the people are inherently unfriendly; I just think they get overwhelmed running with such a small crew during peak times (even in a tiny establishment). Undecided on future visits.

  • Brandi F.

The food here is fantastic. I get a fish taco (or two), the tortilla soup, or the tamales. The service may not be the warmest, but they're fast, efficient, and see to your needs. I enjoy my experience each time I'm there, and it's just about the least expensive lunch you can get downtown! Highly recommend.

I've enjoyed many lunches here after my teenage daughter claimed it her favorite downtown. We've enjoyed many types of tacos, black bean soup, creamy crab soup, tortilla soup, free chips and great salsa. Guacamole to die for...order the large. We've enjoyed an occasional beer and never left wanting more food... too full! It's a cozy restaurant with a great atmosphere and a quick turnover, but you don't feel rushed. Good service and familiarity with customers makes for a great downtown stop anytime.

Last weekend while visiting Fredericksburg for the weekend, a local recommended this place and we were not disappointed. The salsa had a smokey fire roasted taste and the guacamole was fresh. My dude got the special tacos el pastor and they were awesome with grilled pineapple. Never had them that way before, but it was good. He also got chorizo tacos that were delicious, but most things with choriza are. I should have gotten the same thing he did, but I'm a foode and I like trying different things. I got carnitas tacos that were good, but not as good as the el pastor. They had fried potatoes in them or yuka, which was interesting. I also got one shrimp taco that was skimpy on the shrimp, but what was there was perfectly cooked. We also shared yuka fries with jalapeño mayo, that was on time! I was too hung over for cocktails, but they had some good looking margaritas!

This place has good food and it is fairly priced, but the service needs a little help. It's not horrible customer service, it just seems like they need more help. Our first visit was during a weekday and it was packed, there were people waiting outside to be seated. We enjoyed the food but the service was mediocre. Our second visit was on a Sat afternoon and wasn't as enjoyable. We were seated outside per our request because we had our daughter in her infant seat in the stroller (the building is very small). We waited about 15 minutes and no one came out to take our drink or food order. We eventually just left.

Encountered traffic on I-95 on the way north to DC and decided to stop in downtown Fredericksburg for dinner. Chose Soup and Taco for the good reviews and wasn't disappointed. The restaurant is a simple, basic affair but the food is very good and service friendly and this was rewarded by a steady stream of customers.

The wife and I were looking for a place to eat one friday evening that had options to fit her new vegetarian lifestyle when Soup & Taco came up. We both said " I feel like I have been here before but don't remember liking it but cant remember so lets try it again, it sounds good". Im glad we went back!! Apparently when we had gone the first time it was owned by a different family, anywaaay the food is really good! She ordered a mango or papaya margarita that was dangerously delicious. So much so that if you had too many you wouldn't know what hit you. We split an order of fried yucca that came with a jalapeno mayo sauce, thumbs up all the way. We weren't sure what yucca was but got some anyway and destroyed them. Wife had the fish taco and I the shrimp, both equally on point. One thing I would change is the choice of cheese between the two tortillas, they slide a slice of pepperjack cheese but I think a helping of shredded pepper jack would be better BUT all in all the food was really good, I think I found my new taco spot in the burg! OH I forgot to mention, their beer prices are amazing! The middie can of Tecate was $2.50 I think and the PBRs were only $2! If they had a full bar they would see me all the time... Great now I sound like an alcoholic.

Good food, but pricey for what you get. Also I went to pick up my food, and the food hadn't been ready, so I paid. He got a bag and some utensils out, the bag as well as utensils fell on the floor, and the guy picked it up and still put my good in it. Also, he did not wear gloves handling food after touching money. Luckily I didn't need the utensils for my $8 tacos with no sides.

First time here, while visiting the area. Very tiny indoor's, some outside seating. The food was delicious! Unfortunately they ran out of the hot soup, before we were able to try it. I got the cold Mango gazpacho which was yummy! I also had the fish taco and the veggie taco- both hit the spot. Husband got the enchilada plate and he finished it off! We both had the hibiscus lemonade... Yummy! It feels like you've gone to your peruvian neighbors mom's house and had real home cooked food! I will be going back!

Love the soup and taco! Awesome food, actually tastes how it's supposed to. The only Mexican restaurant I've found in Virginia that's good. Had the mango margarita too was also really good. Homemade chips too. Can't wait to go back!

The food and location is great but holy cow, it's very expensive. For my family of five, the bill was $75.00. I have two small daughters and an 18 month baby so you can see we that we weren't ordering for five adults. So beware, it's good but expensive.

    (3)

Yum yum I had a pork taco and a shrimp taco and a side of rice and beans. My daughter had shrimp taco and steak taco with fries. The food came out very hot and we spiced it very hot.

  • Cole M.

Definitely a good restaurant. Good price for good quality food. The complimentary chips and salsa are very very tasty and fresh. The entrees themselves are good, and are more than worth the amount of money you pay. I got the shrimp enchiladas, and they were excellent. Would definitely recommend this place to any friends of mine. However be warned about coming in with any group over 4 people. This restaurant itself is not very large, and fitting more than 4 at a table will be uncomfortable as well as block the walkway the servers use.

Wish there were a 3.5 star rating. This was my second visit here within a month and a half. I love Mexican food, it's my favorite, however, I do like it to be spicy, packed with a bit of heat and I am a wimp in the heat department. The service here is warm and friendly. We popped in on Christmas eve around 300pm and ordered empanadas for an appetizer, chicken enchiladas and a taco salad with chicken. The menu described the taco salad as having refried beans, it did not; there were pinto beans instead. A huge disappointment as I love refried beans. The chicken in the taco salad was huge chunks of bland breast meat. If the chicken were shredded it would have made it easier to eat and probably taste better. I had to pour some Cholula hot sauce over this to make it more flavorful, something I've never done before with a taco salad. The empanadas had some spice and we really enjoyed those. The chicken enchiladas, previously ordered on our first visit, pleased the tastebuds once again. After two visits, I've found there are some menu items better than others. Perhaps the next time I go, this wimp should ask them to bump up the heat a notch.

This is such an amazing place to get authentic mexican food :) They don't bring you chips or salsa out which is a bummer you have to order it but the price of guacamole here is great - the prices over all are great as well. The only reason they lose two stars here is because of the small area of the restaurant, you are eating on top of other people it feels like. The other reason is because the servers are just down right rude... You ask for something, say please, say thank you and it is like these servers hate their life.... No smile, nothing...... If they gave you chips and salsa when you sat down and the servers weren't so stern, rude and hating life this place would be amazing!!!

  • Jason Y.

I have to be honest. I've only had the fish tacos. I've been back numerous times and always go for the fish tacos. They're definitely the best in the area that I've tried. They do bring you chips and salsa right after you sit down. The chips are always warm and toasty. The salsa is very good. They also have a unique selection of hot sauces. The fish tacos come in two tortillas and they're very filling. The bad about this place: It's tiny. You feel crowded if the place is busy. The service is so-so. No real complaints about it but they're not outgoing. My biggest complaint is that there are no free refills on soda. It's in a can so if you want another then you gotta pay for another can. I highly encourage these guys to remedy that. I've heard ownership has changed over time. I don't really notice any change in the food or menu, but then again I've only had the fish tacos. I hear great things about the rest of the menu. Maybe someday I'll try the enchiladas.

Don't let the oddity of the name drive you away. The tacos are authentic and delicious and I have never had a bad soup here. There is limited seating so you may have a hard time fitting in a large group the food is totally worth it.

Being from San Diego and needing some Mexican food that didn't taste like Taco Bell, we stopped by this place at random. The salsa & chips are awesome, but they're not free. The staff is prompt, but a little shy. The margaritas are great--the tacos (especially the fish) are delicious--and the atmosphere is casual and friendly, but a little small. Overall this is probably the best Mexican food I've had since leaving Southern CA. They even have Pacifico!

I was looking for a good place with good fish tacos when I found this hidden diamond. The staff was extremely friendly and everything was fresh hot and so delicious when ordered it. I got two orders the of the fish tacos and barely got through the first order. All I have to say is if you want something better than chipotle or pancho villa stop here!

Ohhh, Soup and Taco. This Fredericksburg homestead will always call my name, but my perspective has changed as my visits increase. The limited seating restaurant has a hold on the Mexican market downtown, and have captured my visits from everything for trips for bringing family when in school, drunk food, food for the morning after being drunk, attempted Danny McBride sitings, and casual dates. What have I learned? Stick with the novelty and simply order the soup and taco combination. The other menu items are average, such as their burritos or empanadas (good but small), although their enchiladas were pretty good. They don't have a full-on 6 page Mexican menu, which should channel your choice even further. Next time I'm in Fred I'm sure I'll return, but if I want staple Mexican dishes I'll travel elsewhere; I'm just coming for the soup and taco.

I was excited to try this place after reading the reviews and speaking with my co-workers when I moved to town. Simply, I was "underwhelmed." Lunch visit. Food was average, prices high for the quality of food prepared (but still Mexican food prices). Table and menus handed to us were sticky (instant turn off). It was dark and "dingy." I can overlook a lot of this, but I was craving Mexican food when I left. :) That can't be a good thing after having lunch! The locals like it, though. They were fast, and maybe that's the draw because there are better Mexican restaurants in town. You might love it, but hopefully this review will lower your expectations so you have a better experience! I think my expectations were too high. Anyway, I won't be back.

Soup and Taco? Taco and Soup? I don't care how you say it. I would like to call it Darn and Good. I am currently in transition and while trying to wrap some stuff up before heading back west, I hit a stand still in my activities that required me to sit and wait. So my daughter and I headed to Fredricksburg and while I had every intention of checking out some history, I really just wanted to eat by the time we arrived. I was very close to settling on yet another Japanese buffett but thankfully my Yelp app led me here. And I am so glad it did. We both had the chicken tacos which my daughter loved, even taking the time between bites to exclaim, "I love onions!" much to my amazement. I was sold as soon as saw that they were served in flour tortillas, my favorite type of tortilla. We also ordered the chips and salsa (promptly stolen from me by the 4 year old) and the plantains. Both were great additions to our tacos. The service was fast and friendly, the food was great and if I wasn't headed to Houston where I will get my fill of all things spicy, I would definitely come back.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization.
