I was hoping for better. It was a great location but the food is so so. The service is fine but nothing spectacular. They are in need a of remodel. They should call Chef Ramsey from Kitchen nightmares.

I was in chincoteague just for the night- during the off season, so dinner choices are limited especially after 8pm. Dons was open! I had the daily special: flounder with 2 sides. I chose the salad bar and a baked potato, and added a bottle of wine. The soup on the salad bar was vegetable beef and I thought it was delicious. I also enjoyed my very yeasty white roll, and a spinach/sunflower seed salad with vinegar and oil. When my entree came I realized I didn't have a chance. It looked like I got the whole fish, tail and all! It was at least 10in long and 6in wide. Taste was a little overcooked, but it was pretty good with tartar sauce. Overall, I wouldn't avoid this place, it's pretty good eats. I was in chincoteague just for the night- during the off season, so dinner choices are limited especially after 8pm. Dons was open! How much you like this place will depend on if you are here for food or atmosphere. The decor, silverware, and plates are outdated and cheap. Salad bar is lame. Sweet tea is a bitter joke. New England clam chowder was delicious. Creamy and satisfying. The prices are great. Wait staff consisted of teenagers working for the summer chatting away and texting. Unable to answer questions about menu items. Main dish was served before soup course was complete. Dressing for crab Caesar salad came in plastic containers. Fresh crab meat on salad was yummy but full of shells which made it difficult to eat confidently.

I'm in Chincoteague usually during the off season. Coincidentally, that is prime season for local clams and oysters. You wanna know something cool? The owner of Don's (Don?) grows his own oysters and clams for the restaurant. Then the guy steaming them waaay over cooks them. Don't be shy, let the waitress know and the cook will change the cooking time, or just say you want a "light" steam. We stayed a week this time and I'm sure we ate at Don's 5 nights.

The best dining experience of our stay! The service (Gina) was exceptional, and the main course (vegetarian) was very good. The salad bar needs a little help, however. While the bar items were fresh and plentiful, there was nothing special about them. I would suggest more non-traditional items, such as spicy peppers, olives, feta cheese, marinated artichokes, and craisins.

For less than 10 minutes you can drive across the causeway to Ray's Shanty and have a meal worth sitting down for! Better portions, food and service!

Ok place. Food not great. Kind of run down inside.

Don's is one of my favorite "hole in the wall" places on the island. If you're looking for fancy, you need not darken the doors. If you're looking for inexpensive, local, freshly harvested seafood, with a friendly staff, you'll like it just fine.

  • Tammy S.

Where should I start? Our baked potatoes were hard and cold. So cold that the whipped butter did not melt. The seafood was just okay. The seafood chowder was good, but the salad bar was nothing special. Actually, it was on the lame side. To top things off, our waitress forgot us. After 15 minutes after finishing our meal and not seeing our server, we went to the cashier to request our bill. Personally, I would recommend the local McDonalds for a better meal. It is where we went for dessert.

I have not been to Don's in about6-7 years. I remember when I went in the past, it was pretty bad. We talked to some locals and they told us this place has changed owners a few times and things are different. Well we were shopping near here so this is where we went. When we arrived, we were greeted right away and was taken to a table. There were not to many people there. Our waitress came by took our drink orders and told us about today's specials. I ordered the fried seafood sampler, which included, a big piece of flounder, a crab cake, shrimp, clams, scallops, and oysters. Have loaded a picture for you to see. My wife ordered the broiled fish of the day which was flounder. Both meals came with a trip to the salad bar. The salad bar is pretty basic, nothing too fancy. Just some lettuce, veggies, some fruit, soups. Our food came out in a reasonable time. I thought my dish was good. Then again, how can you mess up fried foods =) They were not over cooked, I thought it was fried just right. I was surprised to see that the crab cake was almost all meat. It was pretty darn tasty. My wife said the flounder was o.k., nothing too fancy. I guess my complaint would be, they could have put some more shrimp on the plate. There was only 1 piece. Maybe they could cut the huge fish down and add some more shrimp. Like I said, I tasted fine, nothing to brag about, but good. There was a lot of food on my plate, I was pretty stuffed by the time I was done, well for 22 bucks I better be =) The service was great. Our waitress was always checking up on us. The décor is nothing fancy, it looks pretty out dated. No complaints about that. Hey, it works, what more can you ask for?

Our usual go-to place for seafood in Chincoteague apparently closed in the few years since we'd visited, so we decided to give Don's a try this time around. The crab ball appetizer was very good, with little, if any filler. I had the fish and chips, which was decent. Not the best I've ever had - but good food, none the less. My husband had a flounder sandwich, which he liked very much. The kids had chicken tenders and a hot dog, which seemed passable. Overall, good prices and good service. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive - (he spelled out D-E-S-S-E-R-T when asking if we wanted any so the kids wouldn't know what we were talkng about so I don't have to listen to them whine when I say no - nice touch, waiter.)

  • Wes W.

We tried fried shrimp and also a traditional fish and chips. We expected seafood to be a solid choice considering Don's labels itself as a seafood restaurant and the location is on the water. Both of our dishes were obviously not fresh but rather frozen. The fries were also freezer bag fries and had no seasoning. Interior resembles an unkempt old house. I agree with some other posts which mention the overrated and dirty salad bar. This place is a waste.

Sat upstairs at the Bar. Service was prompt and friendly. Drink prices were reasonable. Good place to have a drink after work that's close to the hotel. Food was mediocre to poor. Had the $22+ Prime Rib. It was definitely left over from the day before and came out about one degree above ice cold. I asked if I could substitute a caesar salad instead of the two sides. Was courteously told "sure no problem", however when I got my bill I was charged $5.99 for the salad in addition to my meal. Salad was unimpressive. Very small and had more croutons than lettuce. Would go again for drinks but not for food.

More casual than Bill's Seafood (basically across the street). We had issues with the service and the accuracy of our check. Seafood was just okay

Probably the only fun place on a week end night during summer season. The upstairs lounge gets packed and you can enjoy some drinks or try yourself on the dancefloor. Nothing fancy but this is as animated as it gets i think. So this place deserves at least 3 stars to try to bring fun for the 21-35 crowd of chicoteague.

Delicious food. Close to our hotel. Excellent waiting system: Wander the dock, enjoying the view until they call you for your table. The kids loved the mallet that came with their crabs!

Pleasantly surprised! Dinner: 8PM, Sunday 7/18. Decor: nothing fancy. See Quick Tips re: booth. Service was quick and friendly. Menu had several options of soups, fewer salads. Sandwiches ranged from crab cake to BLT. Entree list was extensive. Served Coke products. We had: Salad Bar - Reminded me very much of Pizza Hut salad bar. Everything on it was very fresh! I echo another reviewer's comment about the tomatoes - tasty! It even had beets which I love! Apps- 1 dozen oysters (see pic). Husband said they were REALLY cold which he likes. Husband saw movement in one, picked at it with his fork, and found a little crab!!! (took another pic!) Server was excited when we showed it to her and she showed all the other servers and guests at one of her other tables. She also said some people eat the tiny crab! Cream of crab soup was thick but didn't have too much crab in it. Would have appreciated a little more. Soup was served with oyster crackers! Husband had Seafood Alfredo. He liked it, but I thought it was very bland. I had stuffed shrimp and it was so good! We both chose asparagus as one of our side items and it was perfectly prepared. No seasoning, just steamed. We really liked Don's and we will return this week for sure!

Great food and good price. Take out seems to be popular with the locals. Good crab cakes. Will be back!

We came here thanks to dining credit from Groupon. We were completely under impressed. This seems to be favored by some, so perhaps this is an isolated experience. The atmosphere is chill and easy going, but rather cheap. Drinks are cheap so it is a plus. The blush I ordered tasted like watered down table wine. We know the snow crabs have been frozen, but they tasted awful. Way too salty, rubbery, or were mushy. The steamed shrimp and the cocktail sauce were the highlight of the night. We have more dining credit so we will give this place another try.

  • Amber L.

Truthfully the seafood was not fresh, my Peach Piña colada didn't not have a hint of peach. The customer service lacked. They did not check up on our table or fill out waters, I had to get up and ask (which I didn't mind doing, I'm not lazy!) We went here because we had a Groupon voucher but honestly not even that could bring me back. The one and only highlight to this place is the steamed shrimp. We used our last $50 voucher on 2 lbs of steamed ship (carry out).

  • Curt B.

Was recommended by the hotel. Everything we had tasted like it was right out of a can and heated up. Even the steamed vege's were ruined by putting them in a inch of butter and brown sugar mix.

The shaved prime sandwich with provolone and fries is reasonably priced and a decent size. Nice ambience and kid friendly.

  • Ellen M.

Great crab balls, but I can't recommend. Rolls were stale, fishermen's stew was a soup. Atmosphere and servers are tired, so tired. Rather expensive for lunch. $50 for two bowls of soup and a children's portion of pasta, an order of crab balls and iced tea.

Been Eating here for a Long Long Time.... Great Food , Fresh Seafood- Hell he GROWS IT... Don't get no fresher than that... been eating here for 15 years Never Ever disappointed... The BEST FRIED SHRIMP & FLOUNDER & PRIME RIB on this ISLAND

We were expecting the freshest seafood since we are right on the ocean. Crabs are so plentiful here. We were so disappointed with our meal.the crab imperial was loaded with shells and and was tasteless and seemed like a frozen prepared meal. My dinner companions were also disappointed. We were so looking forward to a delicious seafood meal and a night out. Very disappointing . Would definitely not recommend the restaurant. Save your money.

I keep giving this place a chance and I am done with it. The food is mediocre but the service is horrible. I used to enjoy going upstairs to Chatty's but the bartenders up there are just as bad as the servers downstairs.

Ordered Chicken Chesapeake, which I have ordered in the past. Used to get 2 chicken breasts which was expected for a $20 meal. This time only got one small chicken breast. For $3 more, hubs got a huge stuffed flounder. Across the street at Bill's, you get Chucken Chesapeake for $24 and it's 2 breasts on a bed of rice with asparagus plus salad and side. Definitely ripped off at Don's

My 9 year old fell in LOVE with Don's. My husband prefer's Bills. Don's is more casual. Bill's is a bit fancier. Menus and food are comparable. Broiled & Fried Seafood, Crabs, Clams etc. I enjoyed my broiled flounder (simple stuff but perfectly cooked) and el kiddo got a HUGE plate of fried shrimp. She also ate ALL the steamed broccoli so I felt like less of a bad mother for letting her eat all that fried stuff. She also loved meeting Don (he's run this joint for 42 years!) and feeding the feral cats and kittens out back. (They liked the broiled founder, too!) An Island classic!

We ate here the last 2 nights of our stay. A welcome mix of great food and affordability. Cod was moist and flavorful, good children's menu, good clam chowder!

  • Kursteen N.

I came here for lunch and ordered the crab cakes entree as my meal. The crab cakes was very meaty, no fillers which made it a very filling lunch. The waitress did mess up my order, I asked for a baked potato and asparagus as my side. Instead she brought me french fries. A few times I had to flag her down to give our table refills on our drinks. I only gave this place three stars because of the tasty crab cakes other than that it's really a two star because of the service.

Well, the salad bar was pretty weak but that wasn't exactly what I went for. The cream of crab soup was fantastic, THATS the wonderful thing you smell when you first walk in. Oysters were larger than others I had around the area and were yummy. However, they needed to be cleaned better. I had tons of smut on my hand afterwards. Stuffed flounder was good but the crab imperial was loaded not just with bell pepper, but with bell pepper flavoring. They could do better there but it was still yummy. Oh yeah, and my dirty grey goose martini was way strong, just the way I like it. :)

We really wanted to like this place, but everything was mediocre at best. We got the crab dip as appetizer. Husband got the fried seafood platter; and I got the oyster stew. Crab dip has a lot of crab meat, but not much flavor. Oyster stew was also on the blend side and not warm enough. Fried seafood platter was ok (the scallop was good), but we both thought McDonalds fish filet is better. Probably not going back.

  • Danielle M.

We ate lunch here this past MLK day, it was the only place we could find open besides fast food. The cream of crab was good, found a couple shells but I took that as a sign it was home made. Tried the crab dip as well, it was different in that it came with very thin tortilla like crackers, which couldn't hold up to the thickness of the dip. Also ordered the steamed shrimp which was a bit spicy, the old bay they said they used tasted more like crawfish boil spice. We also ordered the fried oyster basket which I thought was a little skimpy I think it might have had five oysters in it. Better than fast food tho so I was happy they were open. Would go back but maybe this time I'll order the shrimp without the spice.

  • Lindsey G.

Great service and our food came very quickly. The fried oysters were good. The crab cakes were fantastic. The salad bar was average as were the side dishes. Having some more tasty and unique sides would take this place to the next level.

I so wanted to fall in love with this place. First of all, our waitress was very nice. However, the service was slow. We saw all the other waitresses multiple times before we saw her. It looked like instead of giving someone an area, they got the customers as they came in. So it took forever to get refills, napkins or anyone's attention. The raw oysters were good. The steamed ones were gross and left a bad aftertaste for hours. One of the steamed ones was empty, after a very long time of trying to find her, she gave us our check and said she was going to get us another one and never came back. We waited 20 minutes, then gave up and left. The food wasn't filling or satisfying. The menu prices online don't match the menu in the restaurant. It felt like we paid a lot of money for nothing.

Everything was Ok, but not overly exciting. Had seafood for lunch so decided on Prime Rib Had to send 4-plates back as meat was barely warm to cool. Would go back though as nothing was bad

Not impressed and wouldn't come back. My boyfriend and I ate lunch here. We didn't make reservations and so there was a bit of a wait, 15 - 20 min. They didn't have one of those hand-held buzzing devices to give to patrons, but if you give them your cell phone number, they'll call you when your table is ready. Our waitress seemed like she was taking care of too many people for her to remember us. Shortly after being seated, she did take our drink orders, but we still needed time to review the menu. Unfortunately, she forgot about us. We had to waive at her to take our food order. To her credit though, she did apologize and comped us on the salad bar, which costs $11.99/person. Thank goodness we got it for free, because it's not worth the expense. Choices are limited, and brown lettuce is never a good sign. I tried getting her attention again later, and after two attempts, I finally gave up and had to ask one of the other staff members to help me. I got a bowl of the Fisherman's Stew ($7) and, based on Foursquare Tips, my boyfriend got the Fish and Chips ($8). My white creamy stew was bland. I tried adding salt and pepper, but it was still too bland. I requested Old Bay, and sure enough, that gave it a nice bite. Never can go wrong with a little Old Bay. No major complaints about the fish and chips.

We came here expecting to drop a hundred bucks on an expensive seafood dinner...my boyfriend and I payed half of that! We got a delicious entree- the crab was fabulous and the scallops- wow. We got 2 carafes of cheap wine that in DC probably would cost at least $10 ($6 here). Overall, amazing food and salad bar for an affordable price with an awesome view of the bay. I wanted to go back but we didn't have time on this trip! Fabulous.

On an off season trip to visit with a friend who lives in the area, we walked around the old town area and decided to find a place for a quick lunch. We went into Dons and were seated upstairs with a view of the ocean. Our very knowledgeable waiter helped us choose our lunch selections. Are we glad we did, flounder selections: fish & chips and Blackened flounder sandwich were excellent and fresh. Reasonably priced and good sized proportions, our lunches were excellent. A great choice for us.

Ehhh....that one word sums it up. Decent not great. Food was okay but not stellar and the ambiance was 1950's lake house. I do believe that there are better places in town. Okay so I messed up and got an overpriced steak of the interstate truck stop. Never buy steak in a seafood town.

  • Chris S.

Atmosphere: Old, run down, dumpy. Not quaint, just old. Food: A step below mediocre. Got the spicy steamed shrimp. They were small, over steamed and the spice was just dry sprinkled on top, not cooked in and the spice was clumpy.

Loved this place. Nice view of the water upstairs. Friendly service and excellent seafood at a very good price. Wine/ beer very inexpensive.

  • Paul M.

This place is awful. I was served below room temperature prime rib sitting in a puddle of grease. Apropos of nothing, there was a (now greasy) piece of lettuce and a slice of tomato (garnish?). The instant potatoes served as a side were the star of the dish. If you are considering this place, might I recommend capturing one of the many mallard ducks wandering the island and cooking on a makeshift spit over a trash can fire.

  • Anita W.

This was really not good. The fish I had was so poorly prepared, I suspected it of being frozen, not fresh. One person in my party liked her side of asparagus, and my kid liked the cheeseburger, but nothing else we had was memorable in a good way. I won't come back.

My husband and I spent 4 days on the Island and found ourselves coming back to Don's for dinner twice and to Chatties lounge (Upstairs) in the afternoon for drinks and appetizers. The first night I had the fried clams and they were very, very good. For appetizers their steamed shrimp (seasoned) is to die for! The only thing I could possibly complain about is their salad bar, it is adequate for fixing a small side salad, but definitely not a lot of choices.

  • Michael P.

Excellent seafood!!! I had the all you can eat clams and shrimp. Its was perfect. Sat in the upstairs dinner area. Awesome view of the bay! Friendly staff!

Overall "Don" could up his game. I'll give them a pass on ambience for having plastic tablecloths as they do offer shellfish. The salad bar is small, tongs more often than not in the food bins. Appetizer wise the crab balls were quite good but not a bargain at 4 for $9.99. The stuffed flounder was huge....yet heavily over green and red peppered and the flounder RAW. Sent that back, at seemingly little surprise to the server. Then ordered "seafood" dream, seafood and mozzarella cheese only made edible after asking for some Old Bay. All and all, don't waste your time or money here. Sorry, Don!

Went to Don's for a late lunch,we sat upstairs and had a wonderful view. The breaded flounder sandwich was great and the seafood and cream of crab soups were very good. The service was great, will most surely go back again.

My boyfriend and I went there for dinner on 8/29/15. We were in town for 1 day/night. We decided to be responsible adults by hiring a driver to and from the restaurant because we knew we were going to drink wine over dinner. We ordered a glass of wine at the bar before our table was available. When a table was available, we each took our glass with us. When we tried to order a second glass of wine over dinner, the waitress said I could have another glass of wine but she couldn't give my boyfriend another glass of wine because they believe he had too much to drink. We were so shocked to hear this BS! We each only had one glass of wine! We also told her we have a driver. We soon spoke to the manger, David Lewis, about this and he said the same thing the waitress said. We repeated that we only had 1 glass of wine and that we have a driver who actually recommended this restaurant . My boyfriend and David exchanged words. When asked, David said the manager would be back the next day. As we were waiting for our driver, (we are an interracial couple) my boyfriend and I were kissing in the foyer of the restaurant. David saw us and ran down the stairs and said, "Now get on out of here!" I said, "Now that is the real reason!" When we got into our driver's car, we told Ben what happened. Ben was very supportive of us. He dropped us off at our next location. When Ben picked us up an hour later, he told us that he spoke to David (that's how we learned his last name is Lewis) and said he knows him and his family. Ben said that David said, "They shouldn't have been here!" My boyfriend and I went back the next day to talk to the manager. We eventually spoke to a red haired woman and we began to tell her our story. She got hostile and again claimed that my boyfriend was drunk. I said something to the effect of, "Do you cut all of your customers off after 1 drink? If you micromanage that way, maybe Chincoteague should only have 1 bar?" She soon called one of her employees to escort us out. As we began to enter our car, the owner of the establishment, Thomas E. Clark, approached us. We told him our story, and again, he accused my boyfriend of being drunk at that time. We again told him what happened and we mentioned the foyer incident. I said, "Isn't VA for lovers?" He said yes and maybe we shouldn't have been kissing there. Then he said he would look at the (foyer) tape. When my boyfriend and I left Don's Restaurant we had such a bad taste in our mouth's about the entire experience. We know this time of year, Don's has many tourists visiting and looking for a good meal (and a drink or two). We believe that "their" story of accusing my boyfriend of being drunk was a way to couch their prejudicial views of interracial couples. We strongly believe we were discriminated against. We are currently looking into pursuing further action.

They told us it would be a 20-30 minute wait but they called me within 5 minutes. Upstairs seating was nice. Extremely over priced when compared to their quality. $40 for 2 people for this low quality food is a rip off. The sides were gross and cold. Food took a really long time to come out. Service was slow. Salad bar disgusting. No reason to waste your money here.

It is what it is...a simple seafood place. However, they kind of make it look like a fancier place. One waitress looked like she'd like to stab me. She was replaced (shift change) with one who overdosed on happy pills and probably asked us 15 times if we were ok. We only had a beer, an iced tea (no Splenda, only Sweet and Low are served here) a clam chowder and a dozen crabs to share for lunch. They were on the smaller side, but no complaints. Lots of groups order g huge meals. Salad bar looked meh. I am sure the traditional seafood dishes are good. Carpet could use a cleaning or at least a vacuuming. They wouldn't seat us at 8.45 pm on Friday night, cause they close at 9 pm.

Don't waste your money. Food was mediocre at best. We had the Fish of the Day (Rock Fish/Broiled) a Crab cake Sandwich, Kinds Chicken Tenders, and Kids Steamed Crab. The broiled rock fish was over cooked and had no flavor. It was soaked in clarified butter which when ordering a broiled fish you would think you are getting the healthier option. The crab cake was full of filler and tasted more like a bread cake than a crab cake. The kids didn't really complain about their food but it is had to mess up items on a kids menu. On top of the mediocre food the service was horrible. I asked if any of the fish were caught locally and were they fresh? She had no idea. And didn't care to ask and find out for us. After we ordered we heard another waitress telling a table about their specials. Our waitress never even mentioned any specials. In order to get drinks we had to flag her down and call her over to our table. In short. Try somewhere else. We left out of there feeling like we overpaid and were taken advantage of.

The view upstairs is pretty nice if you can get it. I used to not care, because the chincoteague inn and it's deck bar had a better view with better food, in a better setting. With that closed though, don's is one of the last go to places looking the water you cross over to enter the island. The foods not great, but it's totally serviceable. I'm actually really fond of their crab ball appetizers and crab cake. Their crab soup and clam chowder are nothing super-special, but they're pretty good and hearty. I've had them multiple times, and surely will again. You could probably find something similar in a nice canned soup, but it's still nice (especially if you're here in winter... My rental houses heating was broken one year, and this was a nice way to warm up and wait while it got fixed.) The appetizers are pretty cheap, but the actual entrees lean overpriced. They're not great on the whole either, but most aren't bad. Sizes are large,at least. Salad bar is a bit sketchy at times (although it has a nice soup I've not tried, apparently). I feel odd reviewing service in "average" restaurants like this, barring something awful or truly exceptional. For whatever it's worth, my servers have always been fairly nice but probably taken slightly longer than they had to to get things done. Not long enough to bother me or anything, though. On the whole, I think this is definitely a safe spot for food that can come with a decent view. Waits can be long in on season. Don't listen to the reviewer who said that was because of racism though. Everyone gets to enjoy it.

Don's is worn and dated, but we always go at least twice whenever we're on the island. Most of the food they serve is so-so, but we love their raw oysters (never had any that weren't super fresh and delicious) and they make a great bloody mary. The servers have always been very friendly to us, but sometimes not the most professional - that's never bothered us, we just laugh it off and order more oysters! If you want something a little fancier, try Bill's or Etta's - both serve pretty good food and Etta's has great water views.

  • kimberly m.

Overall, I found the experience pretty average. First, I must say that the entire menu was overpriced down to $13 for a dozen raw oysters-which is what I would pay in Philly where they are shipped in and not locally harvested...and they were poorly shucked. The crab balls were tasty, but a very small portion. Snow crab legs and raw oysters were served on a cafeteria style tray with parchment paper, which I thought was in poor taste because I was eating inside a restaurant and not on a patio. Crab cake sandwich and fried flounder sandwich were really tasty. The restaurant looked clean but very dingy and old. Our table was very wobbly. I would definitely pass on it next time I'm on the island.

Old school island type of place. I agree with most of the reviews. I have been here 10 times or so over several years. The staff is obviously from the island and treat locals better then out of town visitors. I don't treat them obnoxiously and have never been treated the way the other post state. However I have observed this to other guest but again if you treat them well they treat you well. If you have kids, one of the few that allow a snow leg cluster as part of the kids menu. I did the steamed crab platter and it might of been all you can eat as it was large. Salad bar is minimal but they have a hidden treasure in the salad bar, bean soup. Absolutely delicious with a bacon/bean flavor.

Food was ok the fried seafood platter was huge I must have got a half of flounder and it was great and the waitress we had was great I think her name was Ann the only bad part to the whole dinning experience was the hostess/manager? She was a POS I did not get her name she was a skinny blonde she yelled HERE at a waiter clearing a table to give him a tray of food, she tried to run wife over as she waited at the casher and was rude to any one I seen her talking to she dose not reflect well on a small town restaurant she acts like she was working at dirty dicks in Baltimore.

  • Billy L.

They were out of all types of crabs for their seafood sampler baskets which were their specialty. Instead, we ordered fried scallops, soft shell crabs, crab balls and oysters. The crab ball appetizers were pretty good. I would get them again. The oysters were dirty. A few of them were not cleaned and shucked properly and had mud in them. The scallops were overcooked slightly but pretty tasty. The fries were average. The soft shell crabs were decent but nothing to write home about. Sit upstairs if you want a view of the water.

*Lunch only* 100% no frills, from the decor to the service to the menu. Nevertheless, a fine place to enjoy a lunch. Sitting downstairs you're treated to a view of Main St, while upstairs you can steal a view of the channel. Overall the food is quite reasonably priced and features the basic staples of Virginia and Eastern Shore dining. The signature crab cake is served in a bowl--a bit odd--but it's basically 100% crab meat with minimum filler. Very satisfactory! We also had a pound of shrimp with Old Bay seasoning and they were what you'd expect for basic steamed shrimp. I won't rave about Don's, nor will I be unnecessarily harsh. One thing about Chincoteague dining is that Yelp reviews seems to be in short supply. So, I'd judge this place as basic and reliable and very safe and dependable option, particularly for lunch.

The seafood was exceptionally fresh. We had the drumm and flounder and the oysters. The food was well-prepared..... coating on the fish and oysters was light and not oily. The restaurant is well worth a stop if you are in the area.

Food was decent, but waitress was poor. Reading other reviews, I suspect they had Anne, as we did. She's in the wrong business, as she has no interest in providing good service. Despite that, we enjoyed our dinner at Don's. The flounder is delicious, as are the oysters and the fishermen's stew. If you go, request a waitress other than Anne.

Ok not a lot of choices in chincoteague so we tried here..., don't bother! Old tired decor! Waited forever for waitress to approach! Salad bar was not worth it soup was not even warm. Hubby's crab cakes were decent hence my two stars. I had soft shell crab and it was awful over cooked. Was hungry! Don't bother

Mediocre food and service at a relatively high price point. Steamed seafood platter was dry and the salad bar it came with was pretty bare. They even had a limit of one visit to the salad bar! I went twice partially cause I was hungry and our food was slow and partially out of spite that they set a limit and the salad bar was just plain bad.

    (2)
  • Neil D.

The clams and oysters were very good, fresh and local. The beets on the salad bar were also good . Unfortunately nothing else was very good. We ordered seafood platters and were not told that they were out of blue crab. Instead we got 3 dungeonus crab claws that were bitter and overcooked. The snow crab was also dry and overcooked. Silverware was cheap and dirty, plates at the salad bar were dirty too. There were lots of flies and the place smelled bad. Never again.

My wife and I ate here last night. We entered through the street side entrance next to the Tea Party flag. Should have taken that as an omen and moved on. The food: steamed spiced shrimp were good but a couple were undercooked, fried shrimp and fried oysters were heavily breaded but tasty, fries were so-so, asparagus was only tepid with no seasoning or butter and my wife got about 1/4 cup and I got about 1/2, baked potato was fantastic but the sour cream was a consistency unseen in my 56 years. Service: we were taken upstairs and seated under a television that was very loud and wound up moving. Our server was inept. I had to ask about the specials and was told "prime rib" but the person seated behind was told up front about the specials by the same server with a description of each. He was told the specials were prime rib, two fresh catches an one other I can't recall. Server walked past my empty tea glass 3 times before I flagged her down. She completely ignored my wife's empty glass so we shared my glass. The experience was topped off by one of the servers who was very skinny and gaunt picking at her face in the restroom and then returning to the floor. Overall a zero.

If you are really hungry like we were after 6 hrs driving from ct don't order the seafood dream... The tiny little portion could not count as a meal specially when costs $19.00. It was well seasoned but not enough. I'm huge fan of human sized portions but this one, served in a creme brûlée dish was more kids size..with the " dream" I ordered side of asparagus which were about 6 skinniest thinnest pieces of asparagus that I ever saw....the only chance I go back is for the dozen of blue crabs that I had last summer , this is really worth it!

Chincoteague, VA. Have been here over the years. Always for lunch. Good fish and chips, but don't opt for flounder. Grouper or haddock or maybe rockfish. There batter used to be better. This time it seems they changed it to corn meal batter; not so good. Blue crab cake very good. No filler. Lightly battered sift she'll crab deep fried very good. Good batter. Good service. Don't remember seeing the NBA flag outside restaurant. Wish they did not.

  • Kimi M.

Ok, it wasn't AWFUL, but it certainly wasn't great either! The service was ok, very relaxed and casual style. The rolls and butter were fine, a little too browned but they were fine. The menu prices do not match what is online however, so don't take the online menu as gospel. The food came out and the sides were ok, your standard pre-cooked Mac 'n' cheese and fries. We ordered a seafood sampler type of thing, shrimp, crab & lobster with melted mozzarella. It was really just seafood coated in old bag put under the broiler with a HUGE glob of mozzarella on top. We couldn't even eat the mozzarella because it was just one solid melted lump. All in all, it wasn't gross, it was ok. But there's much better on the island... We should've kept looking rather than stopping at the first place we saw with parking.

This place is pretty good, we typically only come here for lunch so we can sit upstairs and look over the water. During brunch/lunch time there aren't many people upstairs so it's cozy and quaint. We are oyster people and their oysters are okay typically we get them steamed, raw and a basket of the fried and it's a good variety however they've changed the breading on the fried and their pretty salty :( for dinner this place is packed and with more people comes less attention for you and since this place is cheaper than bills people flock here more for their seafood fix. Overall, it's pretty good. Prices for a dozen oysters steamed or raw is $13 and the fried basket is $8.99 comes with fries too.

My wife and I had dinner at Don's last night, and I was pleasantly surprised, despite all the negative reviews. I had the fisherman's platter, and she had the fish special (broiled codfish, with crabmeat and oysters). Very tasty! The service was great, and the food was reasonably priced. Would definitely visit again!

My husband and I always eat here a few times while on vacation on the island. Nice people, decent prices and tasty food. Good portions too, my husband gets the all you can eat shrimp and clams, it's half the price of Steamers and better tasting. Great desserts too! Being able to see the bay and the sunset in the evening is always nice, if you can get seats by the window or upstairs-or outside even! :)

  • Rich T.

Disappointed. They harvest their own oysters and clams, so was hoping for more. The "lightly" breaded oysters were anything but and greasy. The soft shells were the same, overcooked and greasy too. Maybe if we had gone with broiled we wouldn't have been so let down. Sparse salad bar, store bought rolls, bland mashed potatoes, and a pathetic wine list. The fresh asparagus was good. They do make some of their own pies, but we weren't brave enough to try them. Too many other restaurants to try, would skip Don's.

Soup was good but cold. Steamed shrimp was over cooked and small in size. The steamed crab was also over cooked. The wife does not eat seafood so she ate eggplant Parm. It was undercooked. The staff were attentive and nice. We won't be going back. The oysters were fresh tasted good.

  • Ryan M.

Cheap, tons of decent food, nice service, and a good view sum up Don's. For a nicer (meaning with actual servers) dinner on the last night in Chincoteague we chose Don's. For starters, the beer is dirt cheap, especially so for those coming in from the DC area. We ordered the Seafood platter boiled (see picture). Lots of food, all very good, and so refreshing to see a restaurant offer a platter where everything wasn't fried (and in fact none of it was for this item). Also got the Eggplant parmesan, which was fine. They even have a Salad bar with soups, which is well worth it. As others have noted, not sure what it is, but they have some delicious tomatoes. Sit upstairs to watch the sunset over the water.

Really just horrible / I don't mind eating on folding tables with plastic tablecloths; if the Food is good, then it's all good. The food here is pathetic. We are a family of 6 with kids all ages and EVERYTHING was really bad. This place needs to be on 'Restaurant impossible' where they come in and teach the owners to care and the chefs to cook. Save yourself - don't go here. Ever.

AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL .. I have been eying this place for years and regret the decision to eat there. The only reason I gave one star was because Yelp would not let me post with NO STARS.

We are new to staying on the island and chose Don's for our first dine out. I read the reviews which were mixed so we gave it a shot. The best part of the Meal was the bean soup on the salad bar and the waiter. Otherwise the food was marginal and too pricey. We would not go back.

Our first time here, we were driving home from Virginia. Food was soooooo good here! We had the crab dip, the pressure fried chicken, ribs & fried oysters. Everything we ate was excellent. The only thing I didn't like was the turnip greens because they were really salty, but otherwise food was great! I also had the Treasure Island cocktail which was really good. Would definitely recommend you to stop by here for good seafood & chicken if its on the way! :)

Didn't come on yelp to review Don's but after reading some reviews I find it hard to believe that this is the same place my husband and I frequent when we are on the island. They serve the BEST flounder I have ever had and my mom had visited Don's a few years back and also said the same thing! We have never had a bad meal here. Even my picky son loves Don's and he always gets the shrimp basket. I would recommend this place without hesitation. My favorite restaurant on the island!

This was just bad for me. Arrived there at 6:20 pm the hosted promised us a table in 35 minutes. I checked in with her every 10 minutes because they seems hectic. At 7:15 PM I complained and they told me they called me and seated my party. Another group of six jumped up and took our table. I talked to the owner and he had them set up a table in an unclean room that they were trying to clean from a wedding party. At 7:30 PM they took our order and did not get the entree to us until 8:35 PM. But, they served four other tables that came into the room after us before us. Could it be because was had three Asian wife's with us? My grilled chicken was tasteless. Two of the orders were incorrect and they had to go back to the kitchen. My cooked apples tasted funny. The servers were rushed and not attentive. I had to ask for a fork. This place was so casual that it seemed the servers had no training and were running confused. I will never go there again. Service was friendly and prompt, but food was mediocre. (And I'm being nice.) I got a pasta primavera and the vegetables were kind of mushy, not crisp-tender like they should be. I'm pretty sure that they were frozen vegetables that had been sauteed. Also, the pasta was a little overdone for my taste. There were several vegetarian options, which I appreciated, I just wish the food had been a little better. There is a small and pretty limited salad bar that seems to be offered with most meals. Though I wasn't particularly impressed, most of the patrons I observed seemed to appreciate it. I can also say that between the salad bar, the portion sizes, and the free bread, the pricing is more than fair. Overall, the food was a little disappointing, but on a small island your choices are limited, so this would do in a pinch. Especially since they have such a convenient location and I understand that the upstairs is supposed to have great views.

Expected a reasonably priced everyday bar. Instead was treated to some terrible service and a long delay in being served (at the bar, when relatively empty). Clearly a local place and in the future not worth going to. I guess my business just isn't worth it to them.

This is our third time this week eating at Don's. It seems that we can get a reservation here a lot easier than some of the other restaurants that aren't even as good, and we are seven people. The broiled scallops were excellent. Yes...it's crowded and the salad bar is small, but it has everything you could want on it. My husband had the all you can eat, and our waiter, Joseph was excellent. This to me, is the perfect Chincoteague Island restaurant. It is tradition that we eat at Don's our first night of vacation, so I have great memories here. Tonight will be our last night, and they took our reservation...no problem!

We went here as a last minute dinner on our vacation. My husband wanted pizza but we couldn't find any good listings for that in the area. We didn't want seafood but this was open and no wait (it was getting late almost 9pm). We walked in and they didn't look too happy we came just before they stopped seating people. Several staff people looked at the clock then seated us. However our waitress was very nice and friendly and didn't rush us. I ordered chicken parm. It was delicious and absolutely enough for at least two people to share! We had tons of leftovers of it to take with us. My husband ordered a cheese pizza. It was gross! Like a carnival pizza. Flat crust with some sauce and tons of cheese on top. Didn't taste overly fresh or delicious. That's what we get for ordering pizza at a seafood place! He shared my chicken parm and it was fine. I'd perhaps like to go back and try their seafood since that is what they are known for.

Not terrible. Crab cakes were almost all crab, very little of anything else. Rockfish was well-prepared and seasoned. Salad bar was a bit sketchy, and the whole thing was over-priced. Met expectations for a seafood place in a beach town.

The food was excellent. The service was ok until we were ready for the bill. The waitress was no where to be found. We went at a really bad time. They just had a biker poker run thing and there was a street party out front with a band playing. We managed to get in the parking lot through the crowd. Many of the patrons were already pretty drunk. Otherwise we did have a good meal.

The hostess and waitress deserved an A, food was a C, and decor was 20+ years old. Our entrees were okay, nothing terrible but nothing to ooh and aah over. It has a bar, but the best of the "by the glass" wines were Sutter Home. That alone about sums this place up.

Don's Seafood was recommended and we found it to be not fancy but good food and attentive service. I had the clam chowder (New England), flounder (blackened) and wife had crab cakes; both were fresh with good flavor. We did not do the salad bar and found a very limited draft beer selection. On my 120 point scale (30 points each for food, service, cleanliness, ambiance), I scored Don's at 96 (24-25-25-22). Definitely above average and recommendable.

We ate here a couple of times, very conveniently located to our hotel (Hampton). The food was not bad at all, and the service was quick and helpful. I thought the prices were fair, the fish special was same both nights (flounder). Salad bar a little small and has a limited selection. The upstairs seating was nice, that room overlooked the water, even though we got seated the last time under a TV monitor which was playing contemporary country music that was a little bit too loud, but it really didn't bother us. We'll be back.

We ate at Don's tonight after finishing a late boat tour. This place was close to our hotel and seemed ok from the outside. It was about 8:30 when we arrived so we were getting the end of dinner service. There's a downstairs and an upstairs dining room in this place with the upstairs area housing a bar as well as the dining area. The downstairs looked nice. The upstairs looks like a run down, tired old restaurant and more aptly describes the type of meal experience we are still absorbing as I write this. First of all, the place was a dirty mess. The floor was covered in trash and food, even under and around tables that had already been cleaned and reset. The windows were all streaked and dirty. I was nervous. Service was friendly and attentive. We both ordered the manhatten clam chowder to start. What we got was tomato soup with big chunks of (canned?) tomatoes with some clams in it. Tasteless and bland. Presented very sloppily too. Soup had spilled out of both our cups so that the saucer underneath was full of soup. If the soup was any good, I would have called it ambience but in fact, it was just a mess. For entrees, we got the broiled crab cakes and broiled soft shell crabs. They were out of asparagus so J got the peas and broccoli as sides and I ordered a baked potatoe and broccoli as sides. The food came out in about 5 minutes after the soup. I mentioned to our server that I was surpised that it came out so fast and she said that we were one of the last services so the kitchen was pushing food out fast.(translation; they started our entrees the at the same time they started our soup) Ok. I used to work in the biz so I know what it's like when you want to get out of there and the last people are coming in for dinner. Nuff said. However my soft shells looked like 3 wilted blobs. They sat on a greasy old broiler plate next to two pieces of actually, wilted, useless, pieces of lettuce. My broccoli was steamed(?) but tasted like it had been boiled. The peas were canned. Baked potato was ok. Nothing was really hot, including the soft shells. J said the crab cakes were ok but they came as two blobs of crab on the same greasy old broiler plate I had ( consistency?). I tasted the crab cakes and they were very mushy to me and under seasoned. I couldn't really finish the soft shells. The server didn't ask me if everything (or anything) was good, she just asked me if I was finished. I was.

Service was slow and our waiter didn't come to our table till 15 minutes after we were seated. The smell was moldy and fishy (not in the good way). Grilled chicken sandwich was very dry and had no flavor. The salad bar was nothing special, but it is the only salad bar on the island. Would not go back or recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Awesome service. Great food. Reasonable prices. The garlic rolls that came with the pasta were to die for. Try the crab ball appetizer, they were very tasty!

One of these days Don's will be bulldozed to make room for more condos. It will be a shame. Decor is nothing much. Service is semi-pro. Prices are cheap. Salad bar is blah. But the beer is cold. The fried stuffed flounder is to die for. Worth a journey. My wife's favorite meal in the USA. Fried crab cakes are very good. Onion rings can be just good or excellent. They know how to use a fryolator here. Portions are very generous. If I get take-out we split one order and have plenty.

Not too bad as far as seafood places go. Service was quick and friendly and the menu offered enough variety for everyone - even vegetarians. Everything seafood-related was quite tasty. Unfortunately, the vegetable selection was very minimal at best and undercooked at worst. There's probably a better place on the island for crabs or clams. Save Don's for when you're tired of those places.

Don's is a typical shore town seafood restaurant. There are better and there are worse ... The service was very nice. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We had the broiled scallops and fried crab cakes with mashed potatoes and salad. The salad bar is nothing fancy ... just what you would expect from a traditional salad bar. I will say that the tomatoes were very fresh and tasty. The crab cakes looked a little different than expected, but I said "what the heck" and began eating them. I got about half way through one when the waitress informed me that she brought broiled crab cakes instead of fried. (They really looked and tasted fried to me) These crab cakes are not the best I've had; I prefer when they have other tidbits in them: celery, onion, what have you. But they were good and not too fishy. Everything came with tartar sauce and lemon. The mashed potatoes were great as were the rolls. It's a little pricey for the amount and quality of food, but it's about the same at other seafood spots in the area. They have a wide selection and lots of seating, so I would definitely recommend giving Don's a try.

My family has dined at Don's for many years while on vacation, and although not a favorite spot of mine, it has always been pretty good. In our most recent visit, we had a pretty good experience. My wife and I ordered a pound of steamed shrimp to share with the soup and salad bar as a side. My parents both also got the soup and salad. The salad bar left quite a bit to be desired. Toppings were sparse and there weren't many options beyond the typical lettuce, cheese and few veggies. The soups offered at the salad bar were run-of-the-mill varieties. On the other hand, our shrimp were steamed perfectly. They arrived with heads off (I expected heads-on shrimp as a way of adding weight to the pound order while minimizing the number of shrimp) and were perfectly seasoned with Old Bay. All-in-all we had a good experience and will return again next visit.

One of our worst dining experiences. Server was great and they did comp one meal Snow crab legs were not edible. Scallops in seafood Alfredo were so sandy. Not worth the stop at least for what we ordered No love in the cooking at all

This place is definitely A-OK. Don's is just a nice, quiet little resturaunt to get a quick, simple lunch that will be good. Especially if it is fried, Jim B is right - all their fried food came out pretty darn tasty. It was my first time trying soft shell crabs and thought they were good. The fries anf fried flounder came out well, too. The fresh crab soup was great, the salad bar is simple, but with enough fixings to make a nice salad. The service was quick and friendly and I have no complaints.

Fine beach friendly restaurant. Wife and I had the steamed shrimp and raw oysters. Kids had hot dogs and pizza. Beer was cold and we had a great view. Would recommend for families with kids

Affordable lunch options, decent service. Salad bar isn't worth the $ but the fried oysters and flounder were good. Wish the baskets came with hushpuppies...

Good fried crab cakes. My wife had a seafood medley without the cheese and it was very subtle and tasted great. No atmosphere to brag about but lots of food and all good. When I go the a seafood place, I stay away from the beef.

Went there years ago.......terrible!!!!! Tried again a couple of years ago......was very good. Now..... even better. But, just as I have become a regular, they have closed for a week or 3, for renovations. Their flounder is great......as are the crab cakes! I would like to order other things......but am so happy with these two. The salad bar is a great deal as a side order. You can view the water and sunset from 2nd floor. I have always found the 'service' to be friendly, helpful....even to the point of caring. A great staff!

Don's Seafood is very much what you would expect from a seaside restaurant. It's not overly fancy, just a decent place to grab a bite to eat. We had the Surf and Turf which was a decent New York strip that was cooked the way we requested. There were a few pieces of fried shrimp but they were pretty small. We also had the Seafood Alfredo which was a huge portion and had a decent amount of scallops and shrimp. The Alfredo sauce had bits of red pepper in it, but it wasn't mixed together. After a few bites, I found the pile of peppers under some pasta. Once mixed together, it improved the taste. Both entrées included a trip to the salad bar which was pretty basic. All in all, the meal was ok. We had great service from our waitress, Anna, and the price was decent. We would probably go back, though there are some other places on the island that are better.

Terrible experience. Ordered the Surf and Turf and the lobster was spoiled. The steak was overcooked. I even ordered a White Russian that was disgusting. We sent the lobster back and to our suprise, when we got the bill, the waitress had still charged us for the full amount. We brought it to the cashier's attention. She gave us an attitude and then went back to the kitchen. When she got back, she took off $10 from the bill (Surf and Turf costs around $22). We will never go back here to eat. If you're looking for somewhere good, the Village was excellent and we went there twice during our one week stay.

My boyfriend and I came across Don's website while looking for places to dine while in Chincoteague. The menu looked great and was just what we were looking for. Unfortunately, the food was horrible. We started with the crab dip which Don's indicates is one of their specialties. The serving was very small and tasted more like fish than crab... in fact, very "fishy" tasting to the point I couldn't even eat more than two bites. It was served with saltine crackers, not bread. We did request bread and they brought out some homemade rolls which were very nice. We ordered two dozen raw oysters on a half shell. They were so tiny some of the oysters blended in with the shell and you couldn't even tell there was anything there. Don's apparently farms his own oysters... but needs to let them "grow" a bit bigger. My boyfriend ordered cream of crab soup which had no taste. He didn't even finish it... and he has never not finished a meal. Aside from our disapointment in the food, the service was good. We eat out a lot and both agreed we will not being going back to Don's.

This place sucks. The chef, who we did not see but whose rebukes were referred to us via the waitress, would allow no substitutions or slight modifications of our orders at all, even when the restaurant was nearly empty. I ordered a rare steak. When it came out it was ridiculously thin, was way overcooked to medium-well, and tasted like it had been sauteed in crappy movie theater popcorn butter.
