Delicious! I've eaten here twice with friends in the last month- I think it's going to become a regular spot for us. I like their salads and pasta dishes. Also, it's nice to find a place to eat on the mall that isn't too expensive.

Cheap eats on the Mall, with decent pasta and chicken. The corn bread is faaaaantastic. When I have friends in from out of town, it's Eppie's or Revolutionary Soups that I take them to. Nice way to enjoy the mall without spending a ton of money on lunch.

Have been there twice. The first time I had Chicken and Dumplings (yum!) and the second time I had turkey meatloaf. All of the sides are delicious, and the cornbread is amazing (it has REAL corn in it!) Everything tastes homemade, and they give you TONS of food. It's like an old school Southern cafeteria. Good food, good value.

I feel like 3.5 stars would be more appropriate, but since there's no halves, I was feeling generous today. I dig em. Some interesting southern cooking. It's decent priced and i really like the food. The country ham on pumpkin bread biscuit is my favorite. It sounds crazy I know, but it is ridiculously good. One biscuit and a side is only $4 or so, or you can get an additional one and a side for only $1.25 more. (You usually get a side with whatever you order here. I usually get mac and cheese or the mash potatoes. All pretty delicious) And they have beer. And the PBR cans are only $1.38. That is some cheap drinkin and eating on the mall. The service is pretty hit or miss, which is why i would be inclined to give 3.5 stars. There are specials each day of the week. LOTS of people LOVE the chicken and dumplings on Friday, so I finally tried it recently. It was way to soupy for me. The taste was good, but too much liquidy, not enough dumplingy. And lastly, the only other thing I would mention is that the two times I have tried their sweet tea, it was not at all up to par. I'd stick with soda or beer there. the end

Love me some Eppie's. It's like home-cooked comfort food, but better than my Mom ever could manage. :) (She eats here frequently, too, BTW.) Jerk chicken, yum. Sweet cornbread, best you ever had. Perfectly steamed broccoli- not mushy, not crunchy, just tender and vibrantly green. Veggie plate is a great deal for non-carnos, also grab a baked sweet tater and some of their kicky black beans. DO NOT MISS CHICKEN AND DUMPLINGS ON FRIDAYS. PERIOD. Salads are also pretty tasty, there's this one concoction involving chevre, and I'd eat my own shoe if Eppie's cooked it and added chevre. Though probably not my 13-yr-old Fluevog boots. They are sacred. Oh, and Build-Your-Own-PB-Sandwich, great for kids, with such peanut butter accompaniments as Nutella, Bananas and Fluff. And the best Chocolate Chip Cookie I've had on the East Coast. Plus the employees are all super spiffy, polite, cheery kinda folks with the same faces year after year, that has to say something. Did I mention it's also CHEAP? What are you waiting for?

We found this great lunch spot before heading out to Monticello. Delicious Santa Monica salad with warm pulled chiicken, great turkey chili, fresh ingredients, nice options for healthy sides. Everyone in the family found something they liked.

incredible. fresh, yummy, excellent. better than imaginable considering what's promised. you can *taste* that they're playing the locavore thing. even the steamed broccoli was amazing. how do they do that? can't say enough good things about this place.

Don't think I have ever had a meal I didn't like here. The service is outstanding and well...let's just say I have an obsession with the tarragon chicken salad on wheat...AMAZING!

This is one of our favorite restaurants in Charlottesville. The food is reasonably priced and delicious. Most of it seems like it's made from fresh ingredients. Our favorite is the chicken and dumplings on Friday nights. It's quintessential comfort food. The outdoor seating is plentiful and comfortable. This is a cafeteria-style (sort of) restaurant, so you tend to get your food pretty quickly. Finally, you can save money on tip, since you pick up your own food.

Everything I have had at Eppie's has been delicious. Their mashed potatoes are wonderful. I like to get a variety of sides because they are so great!

Stopped by this place randomly, it's right next to the Twisted Tea Branch, and found a keeper. It's nothing formal, but their chicken was juicy, and their corn bread had real corn. mmm. It's not too pricey either, and just like their brochure says, it's fast and real food. If you're looking for something tasty, and don't want to dig that deep into your wallet like at so many other restaurants in downtown, go here.

Eppie's has been one of my favorite places to eat on the Downtown Mall for the three years that I've lived here. Their home style cooking is delicious. I'm sad to see them closing and had to get one last trip in on their last day. I might even go back for dinner.

I've been here a couple of times and often for lunch the line is out the door. I don't like lines so I don't eat here very often when I'm in Charlottesville. This day I was there around 11:30 so there wasn't a line yet! I ordered the Jerked Chicken with Spicy Grits and a Sweet Potato. It also came with Corn Bread. Firstly - this was far more food than I expected and I couldn't/didn't eat it all. It was really tasty though. I sat outside on the Downtown Mall which is pretty much one of the best places I know to sit outside and eat on a nice day. The staff behind the counter was very friendly, the food was good and the setting was awesome but The fact that you pretty much always have to wait in line if you aren't there at a weird time is a negative for me. Maybe that's just the price of being successful.

Eppie's is wonderful because the food is so homey and delicious and there's nothing like a good homemade meal, especially one consisting of southern comfort. My brother lives in Charlottesville and said lots of good things about this place and he was right, it's one of the many wonderful non-chain restaurants in Charlottesville, something I love. You may thing badly about cafeteria style service but they definitely deliver quality with their quickness. I got the ham "biscuits" which was a thick cut of ham on pumpkin bread, it was a wonderful combination of savory/sweet & salty. Also I'm a cornbread connoisseur and theirs was lovely, the pieces of whole corn added a wonderful touch. I can't wait to go back when I visit my brother again so I can try something new.

Very chill. Order and pickup at counter. Adequate seating. Brisket sandwich big and tasty. Apple, brie, and country ham sandwich very good. Hint: Brie is best warmed. Good, friendly, prompt service. Eating our way through the menu.

Eppie's is a fun, cafeteria-style staple on the downtown mall, serving up (mostly) southern eats at a reasonable price. While I'm no expert on down-home comfort food, I was not too impressed with my meal. Nevertheless, as a local business with friendly staff, I'm inclined to give Eppie's a second chance. This is not the best place for vegetarians. Though there are a number of veggie options, they are pretty unimpressive. I decided to order the veggie plate, which includes cornbread and a choice of 3-4 sides. They were all out of cole slaw, mashed potatoes, and the seasonal dessert. And, my friend nabbed the last sweet potato. With my options limited, I went with the mac and cheese, collard greens, and broccoli. ~The broccoli was a poor choice--just a bland, steamed heap. ~My distaste for the collard greens probably has something to do with my yankee-status. I'm not used to vinegar featuring so heavily in my greens! My friend polished hers off, so I'm guessing they're pretty good to the well-acquainted. ~The mac and cheese was just okay. It's hard to dislike any carb smothered in cheese. But, there really was not much else to this side. ~The corn bread was my favorite part of the meal. It wasn't dry or dense, like a lot of corn bread can be. And it was served warm! Unfortunately, the corn bread wasn't enough to overcome my disappointment with the rest of my veggie plate. Surveying the daily specials--chicken and dumplings on Fridays, brisket sandwich on Saturdays--it struck me that this place is probably better for meat eaters. So, for the carnivorous, take my review with a grain of salt...

The food was amazing and you could tell thought and care were put into making it. I had the penne pesto with chicken. The pasta tasted homemade because it was and the chicken was hand shredded. The pesto sauce was perfectly seasoned and the whole pine nuts sprinkled through the dish gave it a nice touch. My wife and sons enjoyed their meals as well!

Delicious and a great variety. Affordable for the downtown mall. Real ingredients, nice lunch spot.

I gave serious thought to ordering the beef brisket sandwich, which is the Saturday special, but decided otherwise and went with the curry chicken Salad. The salad featured two massive scoops of curry chicken salad on top of a bed of mixed greens and tomatoes that were lightly tossed in some sort of dressing. The dressing was sweet and the greens tasted very fresh, which is always the key to any good salad. It was also served with a side of pumpkin bread. This could also be called pumpkin cake and I wouldn't have argued. It was moist, sweet, and delicious. The chicken salad was filled with huge chunks of chicken and grapes in a yellow curry. This was the first time I can remember having grapes mixed with any sort of curry and it was surprisingly good. The curry was the strong, primary flavor of the dish, but it wasn't so overpowering that you couldn't also taste the chicken, greens, grapes, tomatoes, and dressing. While it wasn't necessarily a dish that blew me away with the quality, it was still a meal I was very happy with. I felt like it was relatively healthy and a decent value for the amount of food I got. There really are no complaints. Other than wondering why they haven't mailed 10 pounds of that pumpkin bread to my house yet?!

In the midst of unpacking our apartment, my husband and I had a hankering for some quick food but also wanted to do a little exploring in C'ville so that's how we ended up at Eppie's in the Downtown Mall with our friends. I got a half-size of the popular Santa Monica salad and a cup of the Soup of the Day (tomato, my go-to). Very unusual combo of spinach, grape tomatoes, corn, dates, goat cheese and champagne vinegarette. It worked as a summery, light salad. Absolutely loved the tomato soup (and so did my husband and two friend who sampled it) because of the ultra fresh tomato that tasted as if the cook just picked them out of the garden and pureed it. Honestly, one of my fav versions of the classic. Lastly, I appreciated that for sides, there are a few out-of-the-box choices. I had the pumpkin bread, which was actually rich in density and flavor.

I was IN LOVE with what my aunt ordered. The ham and biscuits are amazing! that play on salty and sweet hit the spot for a sat lunch. The location betrween all the shops is perfect to pick up that shopping traffic. The seating arrganement could better though. There too many people not enough chairs...If you know the restaurant gets busy prep accordingly.

Like I'm sure many people do, I went to Eppie's on the recommendation of Professor Epstein from the Barbri course. Opted for the jerk chicken plate (1/2) with mac and cheese and collard greens. Jerk Chicken: not as spicy (or spicy at all) as I thought it would be, but it was still very good. The seasoning is very delicious and it's overall very good. Will definitely be back for more of this. Mac and Cheese: not so good. I prefer a creamy mac and cheese to a "fluffy" mac and cheese or "powdery" mac and cheese (you'll know what I mean if you know....I know that makes no sense but...you'll know if you know, lol.) Not a fan and I'll likely opt for a different side next time. Collard Greens: good - I like the big leaves. Wish that the stalks were chopped a bit more. Flavorful. I prefer my mom's (she cooks them with a hambone and bacon) but these are still very good and I will order them again. Cornbread: I absolutely hate cornbread with corn kernels in it, so it wouldn't be fair of me to judge it. Overall it cost me like $12 with the tip, I think, which is really good eating for only $12. I'll definitely be back to check it out again. Since I'll be in Charlottesville until February, I'll be here probably once a week. Oh, and the hostess' name was "Colin" which I thought was pretty cool. So I'll never forget her name!

Eppies is a cafeteria-style little place on the charlottesville downtown mall. Like many places in this town it has an apparent cult following yet I do not understand why. I have been there 4 times the last 5 years. The food is just ok. On my most recent visit this week I had the curry chicken sandwich, and it was just ok I would say, I have had better from grocery store deli. My kids had mac and cheese which was flavorless, dull and had an overcooked texture. My wife got decent pulled pork but it was in no way remarkable. I just do not find the food very delicious or inspiring unfortunately. The place has friendly counter staff and reasonable prices. It's a good place for a quick lunch, and is kid friendly. I just wish the food was better.

  • Esther G.

Cute little restaurant that's set up cafeteria-style. They must get super packed during the lunch rush, I think, because they were out of the dark meat for the spicy jerk chicken when we came for a later lunch, which was disappointing. Ended up with the lemon pepper chicken instead. Although the chicken was cooked perfect, it could've used more lemon and more pepper. There were plenty of sides to choose from, and I got the fruit (mostly melons and grapes) and mac and cheese (slightly forgettable). My gripe is with the counter area, and I'm probably being nit-picky. Their chalkboard menus are hung high and the counters are so close that when I'm standing there looking at the menu trying to order, I have to stretch my neck way back. It's not just my eyes that look up but my whole head. Ow.

Loved it! I am a vegetarian and they had many options for me as well as my meat eating family. We got our food quickly and everyone loved their meal. The Stand outs were the corn bread and Brie and Apple sandwich. We will be back.

The ham biscuits are incredible. Pumpkin bread was delicious and the difference between salty and sweet really hit the spot. Ate it twice during the 3 days I was in Charlottesville.

While visiting Charlottesville with my mom, I went here twice because my mom loved it so much. I liked it a lot too but usually don't like to repeat a restaurant when I'm on vacation. Oh, well - I humored my mom the second time around and was happy to go again. Though Eppie's has a decent selection of vegetarian/vegan options, I couldn't enjoy as much as a meat eater would. My mom ordered the special of the day both times, and she was astounded by how fresh and homemade-tasting the food was. She totally fell in love with the cole slaw and basically begged them to give her the recipe (they told her the gist of it). I stuck mostly with the side selections, which were fabulous. Everything tasted fresh to me. Eppie's is crowd-pleasing comfort food, and anyone who visits Charlottesville should go there! It's a great bang for your buck, and you won't be disappointed by anything you order. The people who work there are friendly too!

This is a fast casual place. You order up front, and pick it up at the end of the counter. I had the curry chicken salad sandwich, and was not disappointed. The prices are fair, and there is a good selection of sandwiches, and other similar lunch fare. I would go again.

The food here is good and reasonably priced. I had the jerk chicken, brown rice, greens and cornbread.

After rooting around on Thomas Jefferson's estate, my family and I were HUNGRY. A quick yelp search brought us to Eppie's and wow, am I glad it did! The menu will satisfy every taste bud possible - from vegetarian food to spaghetti and meatballs - they have it all. The service was quick (granted, we were there around 2pm on a Friday afternoon) and friendly. Food was freshly made and delicious. Prices were beyond reasonable. I could go on and on but I'll leave you with my two thumbs up and a hearty recommendation to hit up this place the next time you're in Charlottesville! PS: Get the cornbread - you won't be sorry!

The brisket sandwich exceeded my expectations. Sliced and slow cooked to perfection. Served with a delicious sauce on a fresh local ciabatta. On a whim, I ordered the collards. Perfect. Don't miss the vinegar squirt bottles on the tables--especially the ones with the jalapeno hearts floating in them. No complaints. Super friendly, personal service.

  • Harry G.

Great food selection and reasonable prices with comfortable indoor cafe seating. Entrees comes with two sides. I had jerk chicken with mac and cheese and mashed potatoes, served on half cup plastic containers, and a drink for $11.50. The chicken leg and thigh was small but nicely spiced. The mac and cheese was warm and creamy and the potatoes were nice and lumpy. A good choice our meal break. .

Eppie's is a decent spot for lunch on the downtown mall. I have to say, though, that I can't understand why this place keeps getting nominated for Best Vegetarian Restaurant in the Best of C'ville competition each year. Eppie's does have some vegetarian sides (mashed potatoes, collard greens, mac and cheese, etc.) but nothing that's truly innovative, or, for that matter, impressive. The potatoes are good, the beans are okay, and the Brie and apple sandwich is pretty tasty. But the mac and cheese is pretty dry and bland, and you can get sides like fresh fruit, brown rice, and coleslaw anywhere. Same with vegetarian entrees like pasta marinara and the Mediterranean sandwich. There are definitely better vegetarian options on the downtown mall itself, let alone the rest of Charlottesville. In all, though, Eppie's is a good staple to add to my lunch rotation every once in a while, but not a place where I look forward to dining regularly.

Had excellent chicken curry salad. Instead of pumpkin bread was offered sweet potatoes as I am GF. Casual but comfortable. Great prices. Had a very good cider while my daughter had a favorite beer. Quick service so we got to our movie in plenty of time. Oh----/the roast chicken is amazing!

  • Alisha B.

I stopped at Eppies to get salads and sandwiches to go before heading out to some local wineries. The restaurant is adorable and the menu has a good amount of vegetarian options. I went for the apple and brie sandwich and the Santa Monica salad. Both were quite good and were made fresh. Nothing mind-blowing but a cute healthy place to get a quick lunch or food for a picnic.

    (3)
  • Jamie C.

Not all that impressed. It was decent, but seems like they were trying too hard. Had the ham biscuits on pumpkin bread. My wife's BBQ sandwich was much better. Mac and cheese is very plain. Maybe I should've ordered something better?

  • M B.

Awesome home cooked food that is ready in minutes. Love the collards, cornbread, mac and cheese, mashed taters... and all the condiments on the tables. Great atmosphere and a nice place for families with children. It does get really busy/crowed at lunch/dinner time, going at an off time is a good idea if you don't like feeling like a happy sardine.

  • Erin S.

I love Eppie's. When I want cheap, "healthy," comfort food, this is where I come. The food is under $10, the food tastes fresh and seems relatively healthy, and it's always warm and filling. And to top it all off, they have sriracha on every table (and some jalapeno vinegar that is pretty good). My go-to on non-special days is the brie and apple sandwich. There's something so perfect about the cripsy baguette, with the creamy brie and crunchy apple. I get the black beans as my one side, and then douse them in sriracha. Not because they're not flavorful, but because if there's a bottle of sriracha sitting around, it's going to end up on my food. I sometimes add a little to the sandwich to for an extra kick if I'm feeling more spicy than sweet. I haven't tried all of the specials, but Wednesday (tamales) and Friday (chicken and dumplings) are near-perfection. For tamales, I wouldn't bother with the cheese tamales. It's just cheese and onions and isn't the best tasting. Not bad, but not great. But the chicken tamales. Mmm. Chicken tamales, with a heaping pile of black beans and salsa, with mole sauce. Again, add sriracha. So filling and so good. The chicken and dumplings are fabulous on a cold fall or winter evening. Seriously. Filling and warming to the soul. I also got a salad one time. Don't remember which one it was, but it was fantastic. I'm not a huge salad-dinner person, but this one was filling and satisfying. Based on other reviews, it seems this is pretty standard for their salads--that they're awesome. Oh, and as others have said, you can't go wrong with the corn bread or the pumpkin bread.

  • Emari H.

This was the only thing I ate that day and I suffered from food poisoning whole weekend... I thought my chicken plate with cornbread, sweet potato & greens was delicious though. Cornbread was the best!! They just need to re-look the food sanitation practice... That was not fun.

    (2)
  • Carol C.

This is my favorite place for a quick lunch or dinner downtown and my go-to restaurant when I have out of town guests - you usually have to pay a lot more to get food as good as this.

    (5)
  • Debra G.

Great place to take kids (mine is 3, and will happily eat all of her pumpkin bread, and yours, and everyone else's...). Sit in the way back, where it's quiet. Fantastic owner and food, especially the mac n cheese and the curried chicken salad!

    (5)
  • Courtney R.

I go just for the curry chicken salad, which is the best I've ever had. The fried chicken and Mac and cheese are delicious too. One complaint is their seating situation, which is crowded. Great service and great food though.

  • Wilbur M.

I give 5 stars when a place is CONSISTENTLY GOOD, as Eppies always is. I'm the kind of person who likes to think about what they want to eat, and then want no surprises as I get my munch on. And Eppies is always that consistent place with the comforting food I expect it to have. It is my #1 place to eat on the Downtown Mall and in my top 5 for all of Charlottesville! Try the Jerk Chicken with sides of collards and sweet potato. Or the large yet healthy salad - The Daily. Heck, try it all as I am sure you won't be disappointed. Good food at good prices.

  • Willa B.

I don't understand anyone who gives this a bad review. What do you not like? Reasonable prices? Friendly people? Fresh ingredients? What on earth is it that bothers you? I have to admit I was a HUGE skeptic and stayed away for years - it doesn't LOOK at that great. Bright, weird coloring, etc. But now I mostly get take out or eat on the patio, and I am quietly, deeply in love. So, on to what to eat: The daily special, at least most of them. The tamales just kill me, I love them so, so very much. The turkey chile is awesome, and should be eaten by everyone everywhere and always. I also have this deep love for the fiesta bowl. But, have to be honest, not big on the turkey meatloaf of the chicken and dumplings, despite EVERYONE ELSE loving them. Their pasta is terrific - fresh pasta that is amazing. I love the meatballs. They make me really happy. Finally, if nothing else is doing it for you, get a bunch of sides, and whatever you do, do NOT miss the black beans. Dear lord. They are beyond good. And if its summer and brunch time DON'T MISS IT. The cheesy grits and cheesy hash browns must be laced with cocain and the biscuits.... oh, the biscuits.

Great food, great owner, nice beer selection! This is the local restaurant I have found good jerk chicken. The Mac and cheese is addicting. The cornbread pairs oh so well with any of their beers.

Looking for a good family place to eat and pleased to find Eppies. Great variety and reasonable prices. I had lemon pepper chicken, sweet potatoes, mac and cheese, and cornbread. They were all very good.

We stopped in at Eppie's for some jerk chicken, cornbread, and mac-n-cheese before heading back to Pittsburgh after a fantastic vacation in Nellysford. Eppie's is a casual, order at the counter restaurant where the food is fresh and quick. Their mac-n-cheese is a baked style, rather than a saucy type. I love noodles and cheese mixed together, so baked or not baked, it's all good for me. The cornbread was the star of the show though-- moist, tender, & flavorful. If we're ever back in C-ville, it'll include a stop at Eppies!

  • Jon Z.

This is one of my favorite places for salad in town. In the last year, however, the salads (which used to be giant and just crammed with the good toppings), have now shrunk and the toppings are miserly. For the same hefty price of $8.50+ for a salad, it just really isn't worth it any more.

    (3)
  • Diane L.

I'm now living on the other coast but still constantly crave Eppie's santa monica salad. The delish goat cheese, fresh corn, large pile of spinach tossed with the most amazing vinaigrette. The chicken and dumplings is also amazing. And let's not forget the pumpkin bread. Oh eppies - can you open a store in seattle?

  • Christine M.

I'd avoided this place for years as it looks slezzy from the outside. then one night decided what the heck. I was lucky enough to go on a Mon. when they offer their fiesta bowl - fresh and filling. Whenever I am in town on a Mon. try to eat there for this. But another evening had a chicken salad plate - the chicken is like a mess of dog/cat food. wouldnt even know it's chicken! Yuck, I'll never get this again for sure. Have liked the turkey meatloaf, collards, etc. Cornbread is to die for. Reasonable and food comes fast. Good if you want a quick lunch/dinner b4 heading to a theater. I am an ex-NYer so have eaten lots of great, good and not so good meals. I am also a female senior if that means anything. If all else fails get a mess of sides. Good deal, no atmosphere.

Great Southern cooking on the Mall in Charlottesville. This is a 'order at the window and wait till they call your name' kind of place. They have weekly specials, something a little different for each night of the week. I went on a Monday evening; they were out of soup. Their chicken special includes a piece of excellent tasting corn bread and a choice of two sides. The chicken is lemon grilled or jerk style. I opted for the 1/4 jerked chicken with black beans and collard greens. They put the beans in a bowl which was cool but would have preferred the collards in a bowl so the vinegar wouldn't run all over everything else. They were also out of broccoli which was one of about seven vegetables. This is a no frills joint, good sized dining room with stools facing the Mall so good for people watching. I thought the corn bread was so good, I asked the guy behind the register who took my order, what the special secret was. It tasted like maybe blueberries or maybe cranberries. He said " I have no idea, I just know it's good". So there you go, just know it's good and help yourself!

You'll find me here nearly every Wednesday with a chicken tamale in hand. Yum! The homemade mole sauce is just delectable! Great beer prices. The rest of their menu is good, too, but largely dishes I'd rather prepare at home.

Good food. Not a whole lot of options for vegetarians, though!

Delicious and cheap Southern cooking. The Mac and Cheese is a must try side. They have interesting specials corresponding to the different days of the week. Things like Chicken and Dumplings and Meatloaf. This is a get in and get out kind of restaurant. A true gem on the Downtown Mall.

  • Jackie B.

Pretty solid feel-good food. Weird ordering and seating arrangement and there are sometimes mistakes on food-pick, as well as delays in getting the food. The jerked chicken is great--I'd give that 4-5 stars. The sides are meh, the broccoli was flavorless and not cooked enough so it was still pretty hard. The mac and cheese tasted as though it was about par with Stoffers frozen food but it wasn't bad. I was disappointed as I thought everything would taste fresher than it did based on the previous reviews. I've eaten here about three times and have always been satisfied but never leave here dying to go back.

Everything on the menu is pretty good. Especially love the pumpkin bread.

Small place but delicious food. I always end up having the pasta with vodka sauce and the tomato bisque. Good for a quick meal at the downtown mall.

O tothe M tothe G! Yep, I just typed that. There's not much I can say about Eppie's, but I'll try. Eppie's ... it's epically awesome :-\ For reals, though, Eppie's is 110% delicious. It's located on the C'ville walking mall and if you blink, you'll walk right past it. I've been twice and both times my food has been spot-on. I actually crave Eppie's sometimes in the middle of the night. Anyway, their menu is pretty large (and on a chalk board!) and features everything from BBQ to salads to country ham. Both times I've been, I've gotten the same thing because it is A-MAZING ... country ham on their famous pumpkin bread. It doesn't get much better than that. The country ham is salty and a perfect contrast to the sweet pumpkin bread. You get your choice of one side with almost every meal. I've had the mac 'n cheese, the soup, and the roasted sweet potatoes (best roasted sweet potatoes ever) sides. You can also get the featured dessert as a side (!!!). There are a few seats located in the front of the restaurant, but, don't fear, there are also lots of seats in the back of the restaurant. Bottom line ... All of the food is homemade from scratch and tastes like it. GO! NOW!

Kind of a hipster-feeling place, but the pasta's good and price isn't bad. Probably my favorite food place downtown so far.

Wail. They ran out of the Thursday Turkey Meatloaf special. Luckily the Curry Chicken Salad Sandwich was a nice plan B. Service was quick and efficient; unfortunately, since it was a weeknight the place closed at 8pm. Therefore, instead of a relaxed dinner and tete a tete I felt we had to rush our meal in order for the staff to close up shop on time. So tip for you all, come early on weeknights so you can enjoy your food and not encounter most (popular) items sold out! Oh, and the the Ham and Pumpkin Bread was a nice savory n sweet meal as well. As for the mac and cheese, it was served hot but the grainy texture either lends to a 2.5 stars in my book.

To be fair, if all you want is a down-home American meal turned up a notch with a few surprising ingredients, this is probably your place. I thought the offerings were pretty basic and did not see anything that "popped" or made me want to try it. I found the food bland and non-exciting. I might just be a stick-in-the-mud, but for the price, I was unimpressed.

Unpretentious, comfortable and affordable restaurant in the heart of C'ville. My wife -- a southern food fan --- says the greens and mashed taters are among the best she's had in Virginia. I LOVED the Mac & Cheese, good salad too. Glad to have a place we can get a quick and tasty meal in dowtown Charlottesville. We've had *a lot* of strikeouts over the years.

visit on 6/5/2011 I want to like this place more... They have a great menu with a few interesting twists to traditional southern dishes and all of their daily specials sound great, plus they're very affordable for well-made food. We went for brunch and ordered the Green Eggs & Ham as well as the Jerk Chicken, along with a bunch of sides. I thought the food was good and everything was prepared and plated very well. However, I just wasn't really wowed by anything. I'm definitely willing to go back and try some of their daily specials as they all do sound tasty.

Man, we really dug Eppie's. Like, drive 30-60 minutes out of our way to eat there again like. Like let's find a reason to shop in Charlottesville like. Like let's take a few more vacations down South so we can eat at Eppie's like. Cool people. Great comfort food with a twist. Yum.

Had lunch at Eppie's today before a talk by Carl Hurley and Jeanne Robertson, two wonderful humorists. Legs (a.k.a. the wife) had the curry chicken salad on a local baguette. It was absolutely fabulous and almost made me wish I had ordered it. Wonderful taste with the curry adding a nice little surprise. I had the daily special which was Turkey meatloaf with collards and mashed potatoes. The meat loaf came out as basically a brick of meat with a sweet sauce in a little side container. It didn't look all that great but this was made up for in taste. The collards were good; however, you could tell they weren't cooked with the smoked ham hocks true southerners use. The mashed potatoes were red skinned and surprisingly good considering I normally compare any I get out with what Legs makes at home. In my mind, Legs' potatoes can't be beat. My meal also came with a piece of cornbread that was enjoyable. It included sweet kernel corn in the bread. Very nice but I would have loved some butter to go on it. All in all, this was a wonderful lunch which was just another part of a lovely day with my best friend.

My new favorite place. The chicken and dumplings on Fridays are (don't tell my mom) perhaps the best I've ever had. Simple (in a very good way), excellent, affordable. Home-cooked, southern comfort food mixed in with spice and Jerk. Lunch yesterday - Jerk Chicken, black beans, cornbread and collard greens - outstanding. Run by good people, too.

Eppie's has won my heart for the best, simple, home-cooked goodness at super affordable prices in the hip small southern town of Charlottesville, VA. I wish there were more places like this in NoVA where I currently live. The first time I came here was back in February, when it was cold and dreary... but still, the place was packed. I got 1/4 of the jerk chicken with a side of broccoli and sweet potatoes (ask for brown sugar on top). Of course, it came with corn bread (true Southern style, with bits of corn in it, really moist and delicious). The meal was great, and I have been dying to come back. That finally happened last night, when some friends and I stopped to get a bite to eat town after a day touring Montepier. The Th. night special was turkey meatloaf (light and evenly spiced) with your 2 choices of sides and corn bread. We all got the meatloaf and ordered sides of cole slaw (not my fave, a bit on the vinegary side but ok), sweet potato, mashed potato, black beans and broccoli. It was ALL very good and totally hit the spot. My mouth was drooling just thinking about the other sides I could have chosen instead. Of course, the highlight was the cornbread and I got some to take home. Eppie's leftovers was also a hit this morning... man, oh man! This is definitely the best place to enjoy home-style country cookin' with fresh, local produce at a good price. I am coming here every time I visit Charlottesville! In other words.. BELIEVE THE HYPE!

Eppie's is the place to go for fantastic comfort food and speedy service. Located on the Downtown Mall, it has plenty of space in the inside and outside for seating. My favorite dish at Eppie's is the Jamaican jerk chicken with macaroni and cheese and collard greens. Each time I go there and get this dish, I am never disappointed. The chicken is juicy and coated in a zesty spice blend. The macaroni and cheese and collard greens taste like they are right out of the South. Overall, Eppie's has delicious comfort food at a reasonable price.

Just experienced Brunch at Eppie's, and what a treat! My husband and I stuck to traditional favorites (biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, cheesy hash browns) but our friends got a couple of the specials, and they were out of this world! If you go, you HAVE to order the Green Eggs n Ham, with cornbread, collard greens, ham, poached eggs, and alfredo sauce. Such a wonderful combinations of flavors, with a perfect balance of salty/sweet its unbelievable! I loved my cheesy hash browns, which stayed inexplicably warm and melty to the very end! Can't wait to bring more friends and family to brunch here every Sunday after church!

Everything here is good and cheap. If you order a quarter chicken, you will get a colossal amount of food, so I usually stick to the kids mac 'n cheese (comes with a side of pumpkin, corn or garlic bread for under $4) or the "ham biscuit," which is Kite's ham on pumpkin bread, served with a side item for just over $4. The combination of the super-salty, dry, meaty ham and the sweet, moist, spicy pumpkin bread is out of this world. I had it yesterday and I want it again today. It's nuts. Salads are also awesome, with lots of fresh ingredients and homemade dressings. They're also huge. The baked sweet potato is a great side item choice, and they'll give you brown sugar to put on it if you want. I'm also a fan of the collard greens. And there's sweet tea to drink, which is always a plus. Check the hours on the website before you go--they only serve dinner on certain nights and are closed on Sundays. And don't forget to ask for the UVa discount!

We came here a few weeks ago after reading the positive reviews. The curry chicken salad and mac & cheese were both very good. They had tamales for the special that looked delicious and seemed really popular. Overall it was a positive experience and I wouldn't mind eating there again.

Everything is consistently excellent. Among places actually on the Downtown Mall, it really is one of the best - I'd eat here before many "nicer" restaurants, even if price wasn't an issue. The chicken, bbq, salads - all very good.

Friendly service, easy to find location and simple tasty eating. Strangely enough, although the mac n cheese is obviously homemade, I think I still enjoy scooping the fake stuff out of a buffet tray more. The jerk chicken wasn't bad but I was a little disappointed with the flavour not having permeated enough into the meat itself and the lack of spiciness. Loved the cornbread tho, and I usually hate cornbread.

I am not a fan of Southern cooking, salad is decent, chicken and dumplings smells awful. Tomato sauce for pasta was tasty.

Stopped by on a nice day to get some to-go sandwiches to sit in the grass with. Read some decent reviews and thought I'd give it a try. My boyfriend and I got a curried chicken sandwich with a sweet potato side and the VA ham on Pumpkin bread with grapes on the side. To our surprise the sandwiches were both mediocre at best. The curried chicken was bland and the potato was soggy and gross, plus they charged me 25 cents for brown sugar to put on it, which i did not get... the pumpkin bread and ham was just a weird combo.... Don't think I'd go here again. Tea house lunches are way better!

Eppie's food was great--especially loved the jerk chicken and the chicken & dumplings. great food & very reasonably priced, as you'd expect with their line out the door. would go back again-- just don't expect any ambiance!

Their Santa Monica salad (but ask for the garlic vinaigrette) is unbelievable. It's very fresh with corn off the cob, goat cheese and dates. Their chicken and veggie sides and mac & cheese are all also excellent. 5 stars for the Santa Monica salad for sure.

I've been here two times - both times I had cheese tortellini that was quite simple but quite good. Tasted very homeade: the best pasta dish I've been served at a Charlottesville restaurant. This place has you order at the Cashier when you walk in and the food has been brought quickly both times I've been there. Overall, nice place for a good, casual meal.

I decided to go here based on yelp reviews. Admittedly, my review will be skewed because my two year old had a mega meltdown as soon as we entered the restaurant. When I checked out the mobile version of Eppies website, it wasn't clear to me that it was a pay at the counter/upscale fast food style venue. I just assumed any place offering a wine selection was one that included table service. This meant everyone in my family was overwhelmed when we realized food decisions had to be made almost immediately and we couldn't start an alcohol tab. Not a huge deal, it just probably wasn't the style of dining we would have chosen for that evening. The food was delicious. My husband and I shared the double ham biscuit plate. I think some members of my family would have ordered more had we known the serving size was on the smaller size (at least for the biscuit meal with no sides). We could have easily gotten in line to order more, but the toddler was not cooperating. So, excellent restaurant. I would return. I just may not have chosen it that night had I known it wasn't a sit down and order style venue. I will say it serves the best pumpkin bread I've ever tried.
