Athens Steak a House is a family favorite. I had the strip steak, which was perfectly seasoned, and the baklava with ice cream for dessert. The owner is so gracious and it's always a treat to visit with her and her son.

The owners were, indeed fabulous wanting to make sure I enjoyed my experience and my food, as I so obviously did not. This place has been around for forty years, so I was told. Unfortunately, the atmosphere and the dishes have not been updated since that time. I ordered spanikopita and the 8 ounce rib eye, medium rare. This was served with a lemon chicken soup, greek salad, baked potato and "fresh" baked bread. Although the spanikopita had great flavor, it tasted warmed up in the microwave and the filo dough was destroyed by this method...soft and spongy. The lemon chicken soup was introduced as chicken base with lemon rice and egg. Not the most appetizing way to present a dish. it tasted alright, but the rice was clearly minute rice. The "fresh" bread. Clearly not fresh and probably baked at the beginning of the week. Nor was it warm, soft, crunchy or anything that is normally appealing about fresh bread. So, I did not taste it as it was not appealing to my acute bread sensory receptors. Onto the salad. a Grecian salad made with iceberg (not greek) cut into very small slices, one small 2" x 1/2" block of old feta, a few kalamata olives and maybe four very small slices of tomato,. tossed in an everyday Italian dressing. This was all laid out nice and flat on a plate too big for the serving. All in all, not terrible, but out of date presentation and flavor. Then the steak and potato. The menu has a convenient explanation of the different preparations of steak. Medium rare is cooked on the outside and red, but warm in the middle. Sounds about right. However, my steak was red in some spots and purple in others, which is odd for a cut that was way less than an inch thick. Plus, and most importantly, it smelled and tasted old. I mean like, it may have had a silvery green slime on the outside of it before it was cooked. The waitress, said that it was the sauce that was added to it when it was cooked. I don't know of any sauce, nor have I tasted one, that would make a good steak taste old or smell old. But the owner said it was freshly cut today...possibly freshly cut from an old piece of meat? I don't know. But I can tell you that I did not enjoy it. I tried to leave without letting on that I did not enjoy my dinner. But they could see it on my face and tried to make it right because they could tell that I would not come back. So, after I write this review, I will send a long email to the owner to explain my position. I do not recommend this establishment, but I think they could benefit from a menu makeover, dining room makeover and possibly some QC in the kitchen. The people were very kind and caring and I wish them the best of luck in the future.

Absolutely charming and sweet owner. She treated us like family. The prime rib was cooked to perfection and the baklava was incredible. It is definitely a throwback to another era... But in a wonderful way.

Loved the weird atmosphere here. I was a bit skeptical, since we were the only customers and it's not in an ideal location. We got the 10oz filet cooked medium rare, which comes with Greek salad and we chose mixed vegetables as our side. Steak was cooked perfectly (hard to find a place that serves a perfectly cooked rare or medium rare steak always gets over cooked) and the green bean carrot combo was served in what tasted like a lemon butter sauce (so yummy) salad could have provided a bit more, but I wasn't there for the salad. Don't go there and expect fast service like you get at a chain, let them take the time to do it right. As far as atmosphere goes, my boyfriend summed it up when he said "its like a place that David Lynch would have in one of his movies if he were from the south.". Loved it and will be back!

The atmosphere is of the 60's steak house. Food was awesome and the owner was a real treat. 84 years young she bakes the bread and makes the desserts. Steak was awesome.

Delicious authentic hints of Greek! Loved the stuffed grape leaves, and meatballs! Had the Prime Rib and it was delicious. Great family owned place! Loved it!

This is a solidly good restaurant, but not spectacular. The most important component is there, good food nicely seasoned and cooked as expected. The prices are very reasonable. The interior is passing charming and heading toward dark and dated. The family who runs the restaurant is very nice and attentive. I would go back, although it might not be my first choice in Bristol.

I have to admit, I had my reservations when we drove up to this place just off State St. in Bristol, TN-VA, but it more than exceeded my expectations. I was visiting the area with my parents for the Food City 500, and it also happened to be my Birthday. They wanted to take me out for a nice Birthday meal, and I left it up to my Mom to pick the place since I didn't know much about the area. When we walked in, we were greeted by the friendly staff, many of whom are of the same family, and they proceeded to serve us homemade soup, salad, impeccably tender and savory beef, and delicious homemade deserts. I highly recommend this place and only take 1 star away because of the "curb appeal," but if you agree with the adage, "don't judge a book by its cover," you'll be pleasantly surprised.

This place is way outdated and the prices are high! I don't mind paying for a good steak but, it was tough as well!

Best steak I have ever had. Service is usually slow, only two servers normally. Worth the wait though. Excellent homemade dressings. I dream about the Hershey's chocolate almond pie.

Ok here we go. Went this past Friday night. Two other tables in the restaurant. The owner who is in here 80's and one waitress in her 60's. So I can tell quickly this is gonna be a slow process. The soup the bring out was really good, some chicken stock lemony stuff. I went with the greek salad which consisted of 2 tiny olives and a slice of a pepperocini. Got the prime rib which was just average, the potato could have been baked a few more minutes for my liking. Just a long night with mediocre results.

My new favorite restaurant in Bristol. I hate chain restaurants so I always eat local and down town. After getting sick of the same old downtown, we decided to eat at Athens--best decision ever. Great environment, delicious food, and the sweetest owner ever. This is my new go-to.

This was the best steak dinner I have ever had! The prime rib was cooked just right, and was very juicy and tasty. The appetizer (chicken and egg soup) tasted great and was just the right size. The atmosphere was wonderful - quiet enough that my wife and I could talk! We'll be back, with our friends!

this place is worth the wait. PROTIP: there is inevitably a wait. why? the 90 year old waitress who wears every hat in the restaurant AND still makes all the desserts (which you WILL eat) from scratch! each time we have dinner here, my fondness for this place grows. do yourself a favor and keep a true mom&pop steakhouse in business.
