I tried again last week with another couple... they nailed it this time. We ordered shrimp tikka masala, chicken tikka, lamb coconut korma and butter chicken. All of them are cooked in perfection. As usual, I requested spicy sauce on the side. The shrimp tikka masala is my favorite with the shrimp is fully peeled-off, so you just need to devour them. While we requested mild, I added the spicy sauce to provide additional heat to it. Chicken tikka is good... it is on a hot-plate with onion. We requested medium so that there is additional sauces on top of it, as recommended by the server. Lamb coconut korma is great, especially with the extra spicy sauce. Butter chicken is just tasty. We also ordered 4 different type of naan from original, butter, garlic and onion. Truthfully, we could not differentiate in between original and butter, because both are buttery. Our favorites are garlic and onion... yummy good ! My wife ordered mango lassi, which is sweet... she loved it. This time around the service is perfect ! So, here you go... the five stars !

I've had great experiences at the 3 different visits I've had to Royal India. The sauces were flavorful and meats tender. I often find that Indian places get away with the quality of chicken because it is swimming in sauce. However, Royal India has great chicken. The tikka masala is my favorite. Don't be fooled by the simple curb presence. Once you enter you can see how charming it is decorated. I recommend this place!

Based on a recommendation from an Elite Yelper, we came to eat dinner. My wife isn't a spicy food eater and ordered the butter chicken which was perfectly cooked, seasoned, and mild enough for her. For me - I had medium spice with the chicken tikka, that came out on a sizzling platter. Easily the favorite dish. We definitely will be back for delicious food in a clean environment.

This place has better ratings than Bombay House, Tandoor and India House but the flavors are quite bland. The naan was also a bit soggy. The appetizer plate was pretty unappetizing as all the deep fried food was not very fresh and too heavily breaded. The chutneys were also very bland with almost no flavor. The mango juice was good though... Both Bombay House, Tandoor and India House have much more complex spicing going on which I prefer. Also fresher naan and appetizers plus much more lively appearance and taste in their curries. People there are nice and attentive though.

This is the best indian food I have had in awhile! The Butter Chicken was delicious! And the garlic naan... So good! Everyone enjoyed there meals. I plan to go back when in the area. So yum!

The Royal India has been around for quite some years now, even before Indian food became somewhat hipster in SLC. Fast forward to last paragraph for nutshell review. Since opening, there has been numerous other Indian restaurants in town open up. Some better, many worse. I have a soft spot for Royal India, having come for so long. The service is always top notch, even if it's much more crowded than years ago. Hipster cool is a blessing and a curse. Now I do not live in Utah, but when I come back to visit, Royal India is always on the list. My go to's are- Mango lassi- homemade and delicious. When eating at any Indian restaurant, I always order one and that is one of the things I use to compare. Hands down, Royal India makes one of the best. Samosas- always good, and big in size compared to other places. Make sure to order the mint and tamarind chutney to go song with it, they are delicious. Chicken kurma- "Chicken cooked in cream, ginger, garlic, nuts and spices". This dish is always solid here, with the right amount of chicken and creaminess texture. To go along with my main dish, I always order the Peshwari naan. "Indian bread with stuffed with cashewnuts, raisins, coconut baked in Tandoor" The peshwari naan is always amazing here, and this is another item I order at all Indian restaurants. Not many places can make this very well. Many times the ingredients inside the naan get mushed and lumped together. Royal India's is always consistent. In a nutshell, there are now many other options for Indian in Utah. Maybe a few better, many more worse. Royal India is my spot, partly for sentimental reasons, mostly for the always great service and always consistent food. I know what taste I am going to get here, there are no "off" nights. I will be back again. Repeatedly.

Great food and service! Based on the storefront I wouldn't have gone in, but my daughter assured me the food was amazing. She was right! I'd eaten here ten years ago and had liked it (but had forgotten all about it). After spending several years as an expat and taking cooking classes from funny Indian ladies with strong opinions and accents I have a greater appreciation for well prepared food and subtle flavors. This food is authentic, flavorful, and worth driving to a stripmall for.

I really liked the food! I got the chicken tikka (a classic) and it was good. The chicken was a bit rough, but other than that I was in heaven. The price was a little high and the seating was very cramped. That was enough to take off a star.

This restaurant combines excellent food and friendly, great service. Highly recommended. I used to live in NYC and there were tons of Indian restaurants on 6th street in Lower Manhattan, and Royal India is as good as any of those restaurants. You're doing yourself a favor by visiting this restaurant.

Uninspired "Utah-Grade" Indian food. My family and I have been here many times before, and this place was the go-to location for Indian food here in Sandy 10+ years ago. Now, not so much. First...great service. No issues there. Last night my son and I ordered Chicken Vindaloo (Med-Hot), Coconut Korma (mild), and Aloo Saag (mild), along with a side of garlic naan. He had a Kingfisher beer, and I had the Taj Mahal brew. LOVE those beers! The three entrees were just kinda' tasteless overall. No real finesse with the spices and seasonings. The what I call "Utah-Grade" Indian food lacked the true robust flavors that I expect...and have been served at any number of other restaurants here in Sandy, Draper, and father north in SLC. The rice? Definitely not light and delicate Basmati. More like Uncle Ben's. They even charged us for papadoms and chutney (and again, with two uninspired chutneys...) Maybe these folks are just catering to the local palate, but having eaten some very good Indian food here in the SLC valley (Aroma, Karma, India House, Ganesh), all throughout the USA, as well as the UK, Ireland, and even in Korea, over the last 10+ years, this restaurant isn't delivering like it once used to. Value for the money? Nil. With a tip, we left out of there with a $75.00 bill. That's just too pricey for this quality of food. I really hope they change back, get some real chef's back in the kitchen, and start producing more flavorful dishes. Oh, and as Tom K said, if you want hot, order your food "hot" or "very hot"...as my Medium Hot Vindaloo was very mild. Oh, and turn down the spot lights, and turn up the Indian music...it was just too bright in there.

It's difficult to rate Indian restaurants in the SLC. To my Western palate, the flavor profiles are similar, and most have the same type of menu items. So what sets this restaurant apart? Customer service. I got the impression that the owners have made CS a priority, almost to a fault. That said, the tandoori chicken, chicken saag, lamb coconut kurma, and naan were delicious, but predictable.

Really like the nawrashi naan :) Awesome curry and service. I had different curry every time and always amaze me! Love it!

Chicken Tikka Masala had nice pieces of chicken, but the spice level was a bit more than what we normally like when we go out for Indian food. We asked for mild to medium, but we were guzzling more water throughout the meal. (I enjoyed the heat, but my husband was almost at the point of sending it back had his mom not sent back her Vindaloo back). So, let's talk about the Vindaloo. As the spice level was "mild", it appeared that they left out all flavor but the tomatoes and vinegar. Luckily, the Royal Paneer was a better option as it had onions and peppers to add more dimension to the dish. Naan was a bit oiler than what we prefer, but it was good to scoop up all of the juices on my Tikka dish. When we first entered into the restaurant, their was an underlying smell of fresh paint. Good experience, but not epic by any means.

Both the food and service were excellent. I am no expert on Indian food but I know what tastes good. Royal India fits the bill. Since trying this restaurant, I've sampled several Indian dishes at other restaurants in search of a close match. I was disappointed every time. Everything I sampled was full of flavor. I started my meal with the vegetable samosas. They were tasty, served hot and crisp. I followed that up with the butter naan. It was divine. I usually try not to eat a lot of bread but I devoured the portion in record time. For my entree, the waiter recommended the vegetable coconut kurma. He steered me in the right direction. The dish was excellent with just the right combination of sweet and spice. Even the rice that accompanied it was prepared to perfection. The staff here was friendly and accommodating. Someone was always nearby to fill my water or check if I needed anything else. I don't typically travel to this area of the city when I visit but I'm eagerly looking forward to any excuse to make it back to Royal India.

Absolutely excellent! My favorite Indian food I've ever had. My favorite dish is the chicken saag, which I've never been able to find as well done at any other place, but everything else I've had here was just as excellent. One of my very favorite restaurants!

Friday night and we were seated right away. Great service and even better food. Kind of a hole in the wall, but I like that. The prices were pretty good. This is now one of my favorite Indian restaurants in Utah. The only suggestion I have is if you like spicy food go for the hot on spice, we got medium spice and you could barely taste it.

FAB. U. LOUS!! this was our first time having Indian food & we were absolutely obsessed from the first dish to the last! I highly recommend trying. The flavor a were out of this world!!

Hiccups. This place gives me hiccups. Strange, really. I had to pause a moment to figure out why. That's when it dawned on me. Whenever I eat here, I end up shoveling this goodness into my pie hole as quickly as possible. That's the source of my hiccups. I'm convinced that if there is a Celestial Kingdom, menu items from this establishment will be all that's eaten in heaven. The Old Testament says something about "mana" but I believe the Hebrew translation is "Chicken Kurma with a side of garlic naan." It's difficult to pause while gorging here. It's their fault, really. I'll try to pause more and let that goodness sit a spell on my taste buds. Even if I don't, the hiccups are worth it!

First timer at the Royal India and only the second time in my life trying Indian food. Combined with a pretty picky taste pallet and I was nervous to say the least. After a great evening with friends I have to give high praise to Royal India. The staff were spot on with recommendations. We had the chicken tandoori and the chicken tikka masala with naan and tried the imported Indian beer to complete the ensemble. Flavor was amazing and spice was just right and not too hot to handle. Definitely needs to get back here for more tastes of this awesome authentic cuisine!

Absolutely fantastic food!!! We took my in-laws and they are now hooked on Indian food. We had so many different dishes and they were all superb. The buriyani was my personal fave. I'm craving it now!!

Excellent food, excellent service, but overpriced with small portions. Indian food should never be expensive. I would go here a lot more frequently if the portions were bigger or prices were lower. I kinda feel ripped off even though the food does taste great. The best deal on the menu is the combo appetizer.

Amazing food and great service! I will be coming back every week because their food is so good and when I ask for my food to be made spicy they don't give me dirty looks and they actually make my food spicy. Our server was very nice and made a lot of jokes with our son which kept us all entertained. Thank you for being the best Indian restaurant in Utah!!!

  • Chris S.

I've had Indian food all over the country, and Royal India is the best I've ever had. There are never long waits for tables, always very fast service, and only the best ingredients. I have tried most things on the menu. There isn't a bad item there, but I'm partial to the saucy items. My absolute favorite is the chicken saag.

  • Julie G.

Service was excellent. We went here with a large group with varying dietary needs. Owners were personable and made a point to accommodate everyone. Food was very good. Had a huge variety from garlic nan, chicken tikki masala, lamb coconut kurma. Everything was flavorful and tender.

  • Ryan W.

Great food considering we're in Utah. The service was mediocre even though everyone on staff was very nice they were just slow and seemed to have forgotten we existed once or twice. The food arrived very fast, too fast. Tandoor takes a while and we had food in under 5 minutes so there's just no way they made it to order on the spot. Ultimately it's getting 3 stars because the food was still good enough to get me back there regardless of it seeming pre-made and the terrible service.

I don't eat Indian food often since I do not like spicy food. I really enjoyed my meal here. I loved the Buttered chicken and onion Naan bread. Everyone in my dinner party enjoyed the four dishes we shared. The staff was friendly, nice environment. Sometimes different dishes can taste all the same at a sub par restaurant-each dish had its own flavor profile which was very notable to me.

This is by far my favorite Indian restaurant in salt lake or utah county. Great service, great vibes. The chicken tikka masala is what I always order, you can't go wrong with that.

  • Howie O.

I ate here at 3 in the afternoon so I am not sure I got the best they have to offer. I had the masala and it wasn't that good. The naan was really good so I was able to enjoy that. Service was top notch which always helps. I am not sure if I will come back here with all the other great indian options around.

Royal India is hands- down the best Indian food in town. We have been to all others in Utah and even outside of Utah and we still think Royal is the best! Worth the drive to Sandy. Service is great too.

Royal India is always amazing. My family and I frequent this place (and have for over 3 years). I recommend the Lamb Boti Masala and Garlic Naan. THE BEST!

  • Emily M.

Great experience! Nice environment, quick seating and good service! We enjoyed the garlic naan, butter naan, Coconut Korma and the Chicken Tikki Masala. Our favorite? The Coconut Korma. Two dishes plus the bread is plenty for two people. We ended the night with some of the Mango ice cream...YUM! So creamy and delicious. The pricing is a bit higher than we expected for seeing a 1 dollar sign on other yelp reviews. 12-15 dollars per dish. Yum!

Outstanding Indian cuisine. We were lured there after watching the movie, "The Hundred Foot Journey." We decided on Indian food, and had read the helpful reviews on this place. We went at 4:30PM on a Saturday, were the first ones in the door when they opened, and when we left an hour later, there was a waiting list. The owner came out to see everyone and to make sure we were happy with the good and service. This is authentic Indian cuisine at its best. Don't let the strip of shops deter you from going in and enjoying a great meal.

Great place for Indian food! I'd have to say that Royal India is my favourite in all of Utah. I've tried other places in SLC and Utah county but none come close. The owners are friendly and welcoming, and the food is authentic. Some of my favourites include the lamb biriyani, appetizer platter, garlic naan, butter chicken and vegetable curry. My family and I have been coming here for years and will continue to come here to get our Indian food cravings fixed!

Little local restaurant is a diamond! Atmosphere is great and authentic! Tables were clean, had lovely Indian music, and beautiful table clothes. Very friendly and fast service; quick to bring out food and refill drinks. Food was incredible! We had garlic naan, chicken tikka masala (spiced "hot") and chicken saag ("mild"). Everything was great, down the the dips for the naan. Wonderful proportions and chicken was moist. To top it off I would say this place was kid friendly. We brought our 1 year old and they were very aware and sweet to him. Definitely try this place!

  • Katy B.

Best Indian Food we've ever had. We struggled to find good non-chain food in the Sandy area and were so lucky to have followed the yelp reviews to this place. They asked what amount of heat we like for our food and they met our "hot" standards with great force which we welcomed after eating underwhelming "spicy" food in the area. Parking lot looks a little deserted but don't be deterred, the restaurant has great ambiance and pleasant staff.

I used to live in NYC and there were a bunch of Indian restaurants on 6th street. Royal India is as good as any of those restaurants. Whenever my friends from NYC come to visit, they say Royal India is some of the best Indian food they've had.

  • Ryan A.

My favorite of Indian restaurants in the SL Valley. Curries are usually excellent. Pretty consistent quality across the menu from chicken and lamb to veggies and appetizers. The only two things keeping me from giving 5 stars is that the rice is definitely not a nice, fragrant basmati...and occasionally the quality of food is not up to snuff...don't know if these are nights when the main cook is out or what...

    (4)
  • Jen H.

I don't claim to be an Indian food expert, but Royal India was so good. The naans are pretty much like every other naan, but the rice has good flavor. This time I tried the Mango Chicken, it was delicious. Will definitely be getting it again. It's fried chicken (not nasty dark meat) in this delicious sauce of onions, pepper, mango and other spices. The service is always great and despite it being a small place, there's never really any wait.

I've been meaning to try Royal India for a long time but it's not exactly close to my house. Thankfully, I was out in Draper for a wedding and this was on my way home. We were seated promptly though the host (possibly owner?) was a little odd. Not the most friendly and didn't say anything other than, "Two?" Perhaps he was just distracted. We dove right in and got the lamb samosas. Good flavor but pretty dry sadly. My dining companion and I weren't super hungry so we shared the Butter Chicken and garlic naan. We ordered it medium hot (somewhere between medium and hot) and it came out very mild. But we just had to ask for some hot sauce and that spiced it up nicely. The chicken was fairly plentiful and the sauce had all the right spices. The naan was warm and soft while still having a light crunch to it. Perfect. As some others have said, the portions are good. We ended up taking a decent amount home. The service was really great. Food came out promptly and the servers were very nice. I personally like when Indian restaurants leave a bottle of water on the table because that stuff can get spicy! For me, the food was about a 3.5. It was good but nothing out of this world to make me drive out to Sandy (you know, because it's SO far) Service was a 4 so I just rounded up.

    (4)
  • Annette L.

I would give this eatery 5 stars just based on the excellent service, but the food was great too! We had the chicken coconut kurma, veggie samosas and garlic naan. All was wonderful and again, the service cannot be beat!

Wow, yes, wow for really solid Indian food in Sandy, UT. I came here with my family and we ordered a lot of food. We ordered a couple of the mixed apps, chicken masala, lamb biryani, chicken tandoor, lamb saag, lamb rohan and the garlic and butter naan (I told you we ordered a lot). My son and daughter loved their lamb biryani and chicken tandoor. I tried both and the biryani was well spiced and the chicken tandoor was seasoned with an excellent smokey flavor. My chicken masala (spicy of course) was creamy and just a dream to eat. My brother/brother-in-law's lamb dishes were very tasty too - well spiced and filled with flavor. BTW, the apps were tasty and the naan were generous portions and not greasy. I would highly recommend this place if you are looking for a very good Indian dinner.

I LOVE this place. My favorite Indian restaurant in Utah. Most of the dishes are good, but some are flat-out excellent. The shrimp coconut korma is tasty, and the saag paneer is heavenly and my favorite. I order it every time. They use homemade cheeses and yogurt in all of their dishes. The chicken tikka masala is fine. Good service, too.

In the back of a blah strip mall is the shining star of Royal India. Royal India is a tasty indian restaurant with very good representations of northern and southern Indian cuisines. I try to eat more vegetarian and there are a ton of choices. Some of my favorities include the vegetable samosas, saag paneer, and some of the more curry based entrees. Prices are also super reasonable with most dishes around $10/ pop. Portion sizes are reasonable so I'd say that an entree per person and maybe an appetizer/ naan to share is more than enough. I'd be more inclined to the additional star but the decor and service do not justify a five star rating. When we got to the restaurant, we had to wait for 15 minutes for a table despite a number of tables being open. Once we were seated, service was extremely attentive, but the waiting for the table was annoying. Likewise, the joint has some murals but inherently the decor is a bit faux and shabby. For a very good casual Indian fare meal in nondescript digs, Royal India is a great choice.

Wonderful service - came here for my 30th birthday and the staff was extremely accommodating of our very large party. The food is the best Indian I've had in Utah. The curries are my personal favorites.

I have been to Royal India on a few different occasions. I try something new on the menu each time and everything is always so good. You can't go wrong. Except the sweet lassi is a bit too sweet for my taste, but I generally shy away from sweet things anyway. The wait staff is always efficient, but it's hit or miss whether you'll get someone who's super friendly or just courteous. I like that though, seems more genuine. Always a great experience at Royal India!

Very delicious food! Our server was most helpful in assisting us with selecting our dishes, and when they arrived they looked great and tasted even better! They even have a naan that has cashews, raisins, coconut, and brown sugar. Best dessert ever!

How did I not discover this place before?! It's so close to me but I, like many others I'm sure, disregarded the strip mall atmosphere. The food here is delicious. There were two employees that greeted us and were very hospitable while we were there and they weren't even our waiter. Our waiter was the ONLY reason I didn't give it five stars, he was very short with us and not very friendly but the food and the other two employees definitely made up for it. We will be going back again!

  • Payel K.

This place is good. The food seems fresh. The tables are always full. We started with tandoori chicken and lamb boti kabobs which were succulent. The server had told us that there would be 5 pieces in the tandoori platter but we got only four. When we complained he said since one of the pieces were larger we got four. This was the only unacceptable part of the visit. .We got the peshawari naan which is simple delicious. The meat in chicken tikka masala was slightly tough but no complaints about the rogan josh and butter chicken. The mango lassi was nice too but ask them not to put in ice cubes in them since it makes it watery. Very good experience will surely visit again to try other dishes.

I love this place so much, I could probably eat here every day for the rest of my natural life and still be happy. I've been here a few times and it's always amazingly delicious. I've never had anything here that *wasn't* amazing. It's fantastic, the staff is very nice, service is quick and the food is great. Definitely recommend.

This is my favorite Indian restaurant! I LOVE the chicken tikka massala. It is delicious! I think I could eat it daily. The chicken vindaloo is also very good, we usually order both dishes with a side of butter naan. The staff is very friendly as well, they check on you often!

Yummy preparations and affordably priced - excellent naan and dosa. Veggies dishes are all flavorful and distinct - especially enjoy the saag, dahl, and eggplant...veggie coconut curry fabulous. The hot chutney on the side gives it a great kick.

Without question the best Indian restaurant we could hope to have near us in Sandy! We lived in the UK for about 10 years. That was our first exposure to real Indian cuisine. And it was fantastic. We came back to the US to New Jersey, and despite the fact there were many Indian families living in our area, the Indian restaurants were uninspiring. Last year we move back to Utah and had low expectations at first. But some close friends invited us for dinner and we went to Royal India, and I was blown away! Several months later, I had several Indian co-workers in town, and wanted to get their impression of the food at Royal India, just to make sure I was not just imagining that the food was great. Well, they were very impressed. As it happened to be Diwali at that time, this was a very special treat for them, coupled with a trip to the Hindu Temple in West Jordan, and then topped off with a lovely dinner at Royal India. My colleagues thought I was a superstar for arranging all of this, and word spread among other co-workers in Bangalore. Thanks, Royal India, for providing the perfect setting, time and again!

I really didn't enjoy the food here. We're huge fans of Indian food and found the dishes we ordered to be uninspired and the service was terrible. The rice was greasy, my plate wasn't clean and our carafe of water was badly chipped around the rim. We asked to get a new one and the new carafe was in even worse shape. Recommend the naan and the butter chicken. Steer clear of the chicken korma.

The best kurma around. And the Nan's are delicious. If you like curry you will like kurma

We were inspired by "100 Foot Journey" movie and went to find some tasty Indian food. I had the veggie coconut curma, medium spicy, and my husband ordered lamb. Both dishes were oh so flavorful and a treat for the taste buds. We ordered naan with mango chutney and ended up ordering a second order of naan because we enjoyed it so much. We'll be back soon.

I have been to Royal India several times and had great food and service. This was not the case during my most recent trip. We came in at 9:15 on a Saturday night, they are open until 10. At 9:50 we were given to go boxes and told we had ten minutes to finish eating. At 9:55 the check came and we were quickly and awkwardly shooed out of the restaurant. I wonder what they would have done if we had been seated at 9:50. I think I will take my business to Bombay House next time.

I hate strip malls, yet a visit to a strip mall restaurant can often times turn into a good dining experience that lasts for years. I have been dining at Royal India for the past 8 years and I always leave satisfied with both the food and hospitality. The menu contains all the basics...samosa, tandoori dishes, biriyani dishes, kurma, samosa, saag, vindaloo and paneer dishes etc., interwoven with a hint of Nepalese cuisine here and there. Given the standard Indian dishes, I recommend ordering based on personal preference. You will not be disappointed. If you enjoy the likes of Bombay House, Royal India may tempt you to drive south every so often.

This isn't just my favorite indian restaurant, it's my favorite restaurant. Their masala is awesome, the naan is great, and it's locally owned. I'm a fan

Based on other reviews, and the fact this is one Indian place I had not tried yet, wife and I decided to give this restaurant a try last night. I was hoping for a little better overall, but nothing too major to complain about either. If it spares anyone the full analysis - I'd give this 3 1/2 if I could, but I like to support Indian food in Utah, so it gets rounded up to 4 rather than down to 3. First the lineup for the evening..... 1. Papadum (along with the usual chutneys). 2. Onion Bajji 3. Entree 1 - Chicken Madras 4. Entree 2 - Chicken Tikka Masalla 5. Garlic Naan 6. Basmati Rice Papadum - honestly, the usual fare you get in a lot of places, same as you can buy at "specialty" stores and just microwave at home. That's pretty common in the strip mall Indian places, if you want to know where to find the real proper article, let me know....I'll give you some suggestions of where to go. The chutneys though, after a little assistance to help with some general surface tension and liquid density separation problems seemed to respond correctly to Archimedes principle when met with Papadum or Onion Bajji (which for the laymen out there means give it a stir first, and don't prod at it too fast or it will be all down your shirt!). Onion Bajji -- Yummy. Usually these are not as crispy as this, but they were super tasty. Would definitely get again. Chicken Madras - it's hard to find this in Utah. It's one of my favorite curry dishes, and traditionally made very hot, but like all places around here they let you choose the heat level - mild, medium or hot. I order hot, server looks at me and says, you like hot? I give him the look that means, hotter than the gates of hell and they oblige! All I can say is, sweet feathery (insert favorite Deity here) this place knows how to do hot! Even I who loves hot food had to admit that either it's because of the hot summer in general, global warming, or just the sheer amount of spices in this puppy they know how to warm your heart and clear out your sinuses, but its not just hot for hots sake - it is hot that tastes damn good! I can honestly say I melted my stomach and probably a few icebergs with this one. And loved every part of it! And repeated later on as I ate my left overs, bottle of Tums at the ready! Chicken Tikka Massala - It was okay, but not like other places. I can't pinpoint what it was. For the wife who likes to get medium level, it was still pretty hot - and I agree, it was still more spicy than most places. It tasted good to me, but had this odd woody flavor I'm not used to with CTM, not with the chicken as you expect with things cooked in a tandoor oven - but the sauce itself. Neither of us would get this dish here again, it wasn't horrible, just different. Trust me I got through all the left overs later! Garlic Naan - Actually I like the Naan here. Some places I find it a bit too thick and doughy, no real problem here. Wife is the real Naan aficionado and said it was great. Basmati Rice - it was Basmati Rice. Little greasy in my opinion, just seemed like it was getting in the way of my curry. I'm definitely a protein guy though, especially if it's super spicy protein! Service was good, though I will say in some ways slightly 'off' or uncomfortable at times - but I've found this with many Indian places until you get to know them. It certainly was not bad service by any means. In fact the owner/manager did come to talk to us and he was awesome, and I think happy to see some new people in. I noticed plenty of staff talking with people who must be regulars. It's a good atmosphere overall, just felt a little out of place as newbies there. We would certainly go again, but would avoid the CTM. Good restaurant overall - I'd definitely advise Indian Food aficionados to give it a try.

Visiting Salt Lake City for work from the San Francisco Bay Area, I honestly didn't know what kind of food to expect here. For some reason I was thinking there would be a lot of American food... lots and lots of it. I was definitely pleasantly surprised when I came across this little gem of a restaurant! Went in for dinner on a Monday night, and the parking lot seemed pretty empty. The restaurant only had maybe 3 tables occupied. But, the food was very good. I ordered the chicken tikka masala, butter naan, garlic naan, and the mango lassi. What was left when I was done? Just a little piece of Garlic Naan haha. - The masala was very flavorful. - The butter naan was heaven!! I love how their naan is long and crispy on the outside, but soft on the inside. A lot of places in the Bay Area make their naan round, and sometimes too tick and not crispy. - I'm not sure if I would order the garlic naan again though. The garlic powder they sprinkle on the naan is too easily burnt, ruining the naan entirely. - Lassi was good as well, although I don't usually order this at other places, so I'm not sure if it's supposed to be as thick as it was. How was the service? It wasn't that bad. It wasn't fantastic. The manager was very nice. But there was one guy with a mustache, or facial hair of some sort, who came off a little rough around the edges. When I was done he came by and said "You done?" and collected my plates, instead of the usual courteous "How was your meal? Are you finished? May I collect your plates?" Oh well. That's the only reason I'm docking a star. Plus, I haven't tried anything else to give a definitive rating for the entire restaurant. I will be coming back here for sure if I'm ever in town again!

Excellent, attentive service from the moment we walked in the door. The food was brought out incredibly quickly (seriously, it's almost like they knew we were coming and what we wanted... crazy!) and it was all delicious. I have had a lot of Indian food in my life and it ranged from barely edible to gourmet food that I'd gladly eat every day. Royal India definitely counts as the latter.

  • Sam E.

Wow, hands down the best Indian Food in Salt Lake. We love Indian food and have tried the others many times - Ganesh is a close second. Royal India is the bomb, you won't be disappointed. We have been eating here for many years. 5 stars for service and flavor, and a good atmosphere

It's high time I updated my review since I've been eating here regularly since my last update. I'm bumping my rating from 4 stars to 5 stars because by now I know what to order and I always leave happy. So, I guess for the benefit of people who haven't eaten here before, I'd say my favorite appetizer is the onion bajji, and favorite entrees of mine include the Chicken Tandoori, the Lamb Saag, and probably the Chicken Tikka Masala. I also highly recommend the butter naan and the garlic naan. Service has always been spot on too. I love this place! Just wish they were open for lunch.

Okay. Here's the thing. I love Royal India's food. I really do. Their lamb coconut korma cannot be beat and the gulab jamun is basically a spiritual experience. The chicken tikka masala is pretty thebomb dot com too. I'm not a huge fan of their naan for some reason, but the batura is the best thing I have ever eaten. I could LIVE off that batura. We've gotten take-out from here several times. And every time, I loooove it. So the other night, we decided to actually sit down and appreciate Royal India in person. Well that was a mistake. See, we went on a Friday around 8 p.m. So it wasn't too busy. There were about 5 other tables of 2-4 people. There were 6 employees in the front (that I counted, anyway.) And yet. It took 5 minutes for the waiter to come get our drink order. And then it took an additional 15 minutes for the drinks. What the what? while we were waiting for drinks (oh rose milk, why can't I quit you?), Husband and I happened to notice that the wall near which we were sitting was a very disheartening shade of dirt brown. I believe the wall may at one time have been cream colored, but no longer my friends. In addition, there was a suspiciously bug-like black smear right above the table. It was maybe a booger. Or a fly. Or neither. But it was gross. The food arrived, and it was delicious as always. The problem was getting anyone's attention for drink refills or the check. An employee would pass, my husband would gesture at them, or say "excuse me," and they would totally ignore us. After 4 times of this, I just about got up and went into the kitchen to fill up my own dang drink. So what I am saying is. I will never eat at Royal India again. I may eat food from there, because take-out service is still good and the food is worthy of great OM NOMs. But I would not eat inside that place if you paid me. With batura and rose milk. Mmmm, rose milk.

This place is amazing!!! Best Indian restaurant in Utah by far. Family owned and always nice servers. I am a regular and have never been disappointed. Favorites are chicken coconut Kurma and lamb saag.

  • Rodger B.

I had the Lamb Coconut Korma as a starter dish my first time there because I figure that is a safe dish that every Indian restaurant can and should get right, right? I mean, messing that dish up is like an American restaurant screwing up a hamburger. Well, this place screwed up the hamburger (Lamb Korma). It tasted like beef stroganoff and was the worst Lamb Coconut Korma dish I have had. When I first got to the place, I planned on trying one of the desserts. Well, after screwing a simple dish like Lamb Korma, I had no confidence they could get anything else right. I've never been back and I'm surprised at the 4 and 1/2 star average rating, but my wife thought her dish was "ok" so maybe it was just a bad night for the "hamburger"

Another fantastic couple of meals for me at Royal India on my recent trip. On two occasions everything was amazing - the vegetable pakoras are among my favorite anywhere, and their vegetable korma is incredibly flavorful. The South Indian sampler offers a nice variety of flavorful food as well. Great service. Oh, and the samosas are actually made here unlike just about every other place in the SLC area that uses pre-made frozen ones. Think about it.

Wonderful! And the service was faster than last time 2011 when we ate here. Food is superb and six of us had amazing food. This is a "must go to" restaurant.

This place is my favorite Indian food in Utah! A little pricey, but totally worth it. I always get the chicken tikka masala and it's to die for! Everything else I have tried has been great as well and don't forget the naan :)

I absolutely love this place and will definitely return soon. The food is delicious and the service was prompt, attentive and helpful. My husband and I just happened to miss the Friday night rush which made our dining experience better. We had the Chicken Masala, Chicken Coconut Kurma, Naan, Rice and their Mango drinks....divine. We both loved it here. Definitely give Royal India a try.

I just re-found this place after several years of living closer to other Indian places. I forgot how worth it this place is. The portion sizes are a little bigger than some other Indian restaurants, and the food is great quality. The hotness of the food varies each time, as it does at all Indian restaurants, but last night they decided to destroy my insides. It was amazing.

  • Jesse H.

Hands-down the best Indian cuisine in the state. My wife and I have never had a bad meal or experience either dining in or taking out (yes, they'll do it) even on the busiest of nights. You owe it to yourself to eat here.

Royal India is absolutely wonderful. The staff are all very nice, funny, and attentive; they check up on your table throughout your meal to make sure that everything is satisfactory. Having been to India many times, I really enjoy this place because the food is very authentic. Nice music, good food, and a very pleasant atmosphere. Plus the prices are great for the quality of everything. So nice to have a place like this in Sandy, Utah. There isn't much diversity around this area, but this place is really the best.

  • Russell O.

We are transplants from the California Bay Area where there is a variety of great ethnic food, and in particular the East Bay where we were surrounded by fantastic Indian food restaurants. When we relocated to Sandy we had no idea we moved so close to one of the best Indian restaurants in the state - Royal India. We've been going to Royal India for 10 years and have never been disappointed. Favorites include chicken tikka masala and the peshwari nan.

The food here is fantastic! And the service is pretty good too. Their curries are flavorful and delicious without having like a cup of oil floating in the serving dish. (Yes, this happens at some Indian places.) The first time I went in, the waiter got my spice level right. I said something along the lines of medium-hot (higher than medium but less than burn-your-face-off spicy). However, the second time, they got it milder than I'd like. I guess I'd give it 5 stars if only the spice level was consistent. But to their credit, maybe they are just used to medium or hot, and not in-between levels. The food is seriously fantastic here. I HIGHLY recommend it. Also, it seems to be the only Indian restaurant around that also has some South Indian food, so that's awesome. Give this place a try!

If only I could join in on the good reviews... The bread was good which makes me question my theory that bread is telling of a good restaurant. It has been true until this run of Indian restaurant testing. Then again, Tandoori Grill and Taste of Punjab had bread that was really good the first time and not good the second time- which happened to go along with inconsistent food goodness (although Tandoori grill was still good enough compared to the other places.) So, maybe bread really is VERY telling. I am considering eating here again ONLY to see if their bread is consistently good and/or to see if their food is better at times. For experiment sake. If it's convenient. To see if the bread theory still stands. Not because it being better sometimes would make a customer out of me once the experiment was done. ...well, and also maybe part of it is because there were so many great reviews. I'm baffled. The biggest bummer when food isn't that great is that it leaves me totally unsatisfied. Totally. Unsatisfied. Like- I still feel hungry. It's mental I know, but I don't sleep well because I am wishing I ate something better. Sometimes a not so great restaurant almost kind of makes me feel like crying a little and want my mom. I might have an addiction to food. I have this need to eat really good food. I really want to like this place. The guy on the phone was so nice and friendly and helpful. When I asked for medium hot spice? and wasn't sure what their spice level was like- because it was my first time eating there? he offered to add the spice above medium level in the corner of the dish and I could add it if I wanted to (well- he didn't do it, but he was really nice and sounded like he would do it). I started to feel a little sick while I was eating which makes me question the ingredients. Aside from questioning the ingredients in this food, the spices were not complete or deep. I had to add quite a bit in order to enjoy it...more... than I wasn't enjoying it. It was okay... sort of. but not really that good. -The vegetable coconut Korma tasted like it was seasoned with typical plain old curry powder :( Which alone doesn't have the right amount of all the flavors- or even the right flavors. It was more like mediocre Thai curry. Not Korma. And yes, I am very aware of the crossovers of Indian and Thai food. Mediocre wrongness is the point. -The Lamb saag was a little better dish but still needed quite a bit. -The Chicken Tikka Masala was the best out of everything, yet still lacking. -I liked that the bread was thin and cooked enough like it should be. -The mango lassi was a little too sweet and didn't have enough Mango. I am sad about the most nearby choices of Indian restaurants. ......I want my mom. And Bombay House.

Great neighborhood Indian restaurant! Food is always delicious and tasty and the service is friendly and personable. Much better than Bombay House - quaint, cozy, and awesome food.

Meh, this place is okay. The Good: Chicken dishes were flavorful. The OK: Naan was okay but overpriced. Service was adequate if a little creepy (I can't even tell you why.) The Bad: Small portion sizes. Over priced.

Although its strip-mall location doesn't look like music, Royal India is a very good Indian restaurant on the upper-east side in Sandy. Their food is well prepared, seasoned, and cooked. Service is excellent with very formal Indian waiters, usually older gentleman waiting the tables. In my opinion, Royal India and India House (also in Sandy) are the best Indian restaurants in Utah.

If my wife even hears the words "India Food" she texts me and asks me to bring home shrimp tikka masala from here. It is the very best. When we moved to the south end of the valley we were bummed to be so far from the good indian place on Foothill, but these guys are much better. Hands down the best in Utah.

Always love to come to Royal India, and I am always recomending it to others. The tika masala is delish, medium spice. Peshwari naan with your morning coffee Mmm :) also love the butter chicken and cashew. Staff is always friendly, with no turn around, which is great.

When I moved here from California, one of my requirements was GREAT INDIAN FOOD!!! And boy did I find it with Royal India. We have been going to this restaurant for YEARS and it is always consistent and good. The staff is warm and friendly, and we are always comfortable there. Our favorites dishes are the Lamb Saag, Chicken Coconut Kurma and Madras Chicken. Highly recommended:)

  • Anne-Marie M.

Excellent! We are very picky eaters and have tried quite a few Indian restaurants. Yes it's in a dumpy strip mall and yes it's a little out of the way, but it's worth it! We had the vegetable samosas, the lamb coconut kurma, the pateer masala and the shrimp biraji(?). Had the naan and the mango mousse cake with the kulfi ice cream. The waiters were great and one of them even tried to sing happy birthday to my husband for fun. He was also great with our young kids. We will be going back!

Always a surprise to find quality food in a strip mall. Royal India was pretty accommodating when we showed up with our 3 yo and new born for lunch. Quick service to help us get in and out before their attention span waned.

I've been going to this location of Royal India as the well as the one in Bountiful for a couple of years now, and I have to award it "Emily's Favorite Indian Food in Utah Award." Quite an honor, to be sure. I've been getting the Vegetable Masala with a few ventures (or borrowed tastes, as the case may be) into their other dishes, and my husband and I agree it's our favorite place for masala. The staff is always attentive and nice, and considerably less cheeky than their Bombay counterpart in SLC. It may be a little pricey, but considering all of my less-than-successful forays into making my own Indian dishes, it is well worth the price.

Absolutely delicious! I love Indian food in general and this place definitely delivers. Not only was the food naturally gluten free and delicious, but the ambiance was glorious. The servers were friendly and the management made sure we had enough rice. I tend to eat three times as much rice as others. My only recommendation to others would be to go for medium or hot on the spice. My wife got mild and it seemed slightly lacking in authenticity.

This is the best Indian food in Utah. Get the Chicken Tikka Masala. They also have wine and beer here and the prices are very reasonable and the service is always very good. Enjoy!

It has been many years since I dined here, one of the first things I noticed is that the service has indeed gone downhill. After we sat down, I think we waited for about 20 minutes and were never approached by a waiter until we called one of them walking past us. Similar service pattern seems to continue throughout our entire dining experience. The restaurant ambience feels about the same as when I first dined here 10 years ago, nothing really changed since then. Their menu item and prices also reminded the same, but I think their entree portion decreased in size. I ordered the Shrimp Masala at extra hot and my wife had the Lamb Rogan Josh at mild, we also got the Paratha bread and a Mango Lassi. The dishes were very delicious and favourable, the shrimp dishes were cooked at the enjoyable spicy level and the lamb was not spicy but tasted just right. This is actually the first time I had Paratha, usually we get Naan and other variants of Naan at Indian restaurant, and the bread tasted surprisingly good with multiple layers of thin bread. The Lassi tasted fairly well, not too sweet or sour, and just about right. If you live in the Sandy area, then I would still recommend this place has the best Indian food in the area. Although there is a slight degrade in service and there has not been any change for a long time, the most important thing in a restaurant, which is food, never disappointed me once.

By 4 stars, I mean 4.5. The food here is great, but the atmosphere could use a little bit of a pick-me-up. The restaurant is overly quiet, the decor pretty regular, and the chairs slightly uncomfortable. The family that runs the eatery is nice and full of information and will typically come out to talk food. I think that the dishes are more flavorful and less fattening than Bombay house which I know tops a lot of people's lists. (basically, if you feel like you weigh ten extra pounds after eating Indian, at this establishment you will only feel like you gained 9) The portions are also slightly larger for a little cheaper price. If you are new to Indian try a Daal (lentils) or Chicken Tikka Masalais (chicken in a sauce) P.S. there is never a wait...

I love you Royal India! My favorite dish is the butter chicken. I have also tried the tandoori chicken, and the the chicken Tikka Masala. The food is great every time. I also love the naan, I've tried all the different kinds, butter, onion, garlic and just the plain. One of my favorite restaurants in Sandy.

  • Lena M.

Ate here for the 2nd time with 2 other couples last night. We were seated immediately and our drinks came right away. We ordered chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, lamb saag, mixed tandoori and garlic naan (ordered our dishes spiced mild because sometimes you don't know what to expect). Everything was delicious! The butter chicken is one of the best I've ever tasted. The restaurant was clean and the staff was friendly. We did have to flag someone down for a refill, but it wasn't the worst thing in the world. The bottom line is that when I'm in the mood for good Indian food, this place is at the top of my list.

Even after moving to Seattle, this might be the best Indian food I've ever had. Forgive them the strip mall location and lack of atmosphere-- service is friendly and the naan, tandoori, tikka masala, and curry dishes are all excellent. Their mild, medium, and hot tends to come as ordered, and they usually even make it "very very hot" enough for my dad's tastebuds. Definitely one of the better spots on the south end of the valley.

  • Summer M.

We really liked this place, even though the location is a bit out of the way. Mango chicken is a good bet for those that don't love love curry, like my son. Otherwise, the chicken tikki masala with naan is amazing.

I travel to Silicon Valley every month and dine at some of the best Indian places in the country. Royal India is right up there with the rest. Top notch and you won't find better in Utah. Been going here for years and the service is always great. They remember who you are even if you don't frequent the place. It's always quiet and cozy with great food. The Aloo Gobi and Kurmas are nice and no one in Utah can touch their South Indian dishes. You've gotta give 'em a try.

I'll admit, I'm a complete rookie when it comes to Indian food.... but I'm a pro at identifying good food! I decided one day that it was time to introduce myself to Indian cuisine and so I "yelped" a good nearby restaurant. It was then that I came upon Royal India. I ordered to-go and my total ended up being something like $18 for Chicken Tikka Masala (which I guess came with rice) and Butter Naan. Is that how expensive Indian food usually is? Regardless, the food was absolutely amazing! I cannot believe I haven't been enjoying Indian food up until this point! I feel like someone should definitely have introduced this to me by now and I'm somewhat disappointed with the people in my life. Anyways, I'll try to describe the food the best way I know how: The Chicken dish was creamy and hot and full of flavor! I'm guessing it's curry? The chicken was hiding in a thick sauce of deliciousness which ended up being too rich for my stomach but still delightful. The rice had just enough flavor for me to enjoy it on its own. The Butter Naan reminded me of a pita bread only 1000x better with a puffy inside and somewhat crispier (is this a word?) outside. Gah! I could probably live a happy life off of their Butter Naan. After my visit here, my Indian food adventures will continue! Let the games begin.

I visited on Feb 6 and was happy with my meal. The lamb biryani was ordered medium but wasn't spicy at all. My colleagues meal was medium and NOT spicy also. The Peshwari naan was delicious. I've had better garlic naan.

We decided to try Royal India because it was close to us. It turned out to be a wonderful hidden gem. The servers were polite and heavily accented which gave it a sense of authenticity I hadn't expected. Very delightful. We asked the waiter to help us order. He chose the butter naan, lamb vindaloo, and chicken tiki marsala. The food was very good. The vindaloo was spicy, which we liked. The rice was awesome. The bill was affordable. I am not much of an Indian food guy, but I enjoyed it and look forward to eating there again.

This restaurant has made me fall in love with Indian food. My only complaint is that I wish they were open for lunch too, but luckily everything comes in big portions and reheats well, so I just save my leftovers for lunch. :) My husband was reluctant to try Indian food but really likes the Mango Chicken (fusion dish) and really liked the bite he tried of my Daal Maharani. I think my favorite dish so far has to be the Lamb Saag, which is has such amazingly developed and rich flavors. But every time I order, I'm torn because I loved the last thing I had but want to try something new as well. I also love how well spiced everything is - I like spicy food and you can order everything good and spicy but still taste the complex flavors in each dish, not just heat. Truly excellent food - I just wish I started eating here a long time ago!

I have to say meh... admittedly I'm not a big Indian food expert, but my wife went here a few weeks ago and was raving about it so we got it for take out last night and it filled the gut and that was about it for me. The staff seemed really nice and we sat and chatted it up while I waited for my food to be ready. They were on-time and nice so they would get 4-5 stars if that is all I was rating. Food seems a little over priced as well when all you pretty much get is rice and curry and some bread. I'm guessing we'll eat here again, because it's close and different... but not because it's amazing.

Eh... I feel like it is tamed down Indian food made for rich white people who live on the east side. I asked for my Saag VERY HOT! and it came out mediocre. The price was ridiculous for the quality of the food, the waiter seriously took over fifteen minutes to refill my water and it wasn't even busy. the one redeeming quality was the rice but that's not enough to keep me paying 40$ for two people.

Amazing food in an area which is tough to find anything besides a franchise. Only complaint is the styrofoam to go containers. So just ensure nothing is left on the plate. Good service, great food!

What was I thinking - looking for an Indian place in Sandy, Utah? Well I was on a business trip, and folks- please..just because someone is Indian, it does not mean they always eat Indian food. In fact my husband's pasta is still my favorite food (and now chicken soup too) ..sigh..ok..onto my review. So, colleagues of mine wanted to eat Indian (probably since I was in the group), so off we went to the closest - Royal India. We had the samosas, mixed kebab, Chicken tikka masala, garlic naan, lamb vindaloo, aloo sag,and chai. All fantastic. They did not use the heavy creams and weird flavors I find in a lot of Indian restaurants in the Bay Area. It was very home-style,and when we all said spicy, by all means..it was SPICY!! The ambience was alright, but the food was great.Service was typical. All in all, when I am in Sandy next, I will be eating at Royal India. They don't serve beef, which I liked too..when it's an Indian restaurant serving beef, it's not Indian.

I'm not sure much, if anything in Utah deserves a 5 star, but because I beleive Royal India is the best Indian food in the Salt Lake Valley I give it a 5. The food is great and there are so many people working you often get asked how things are and if you need anything else too many times. The feel is that of a family ran restaurant and they are very friendly. Everything I have tried has be excellent.
