I am giving this place 3 stars for the overall experience and NOT for the food. It's a fun place with lots of decoration and employees that dance around. I got a chicken sandwich and it was cooked really weird. The chicken seemed like it had a casing around it (almost like a sausage) and was hard to bite into. It was also so so dry and there was no condiments on the sandwich at all. I asked for some honey mustard to put on the sandwich, which helped, but I ended up just eating the fries. My fish eating friends really liked the steam pots and stuffed shrimp so it's not all bad, but I wouldn't recommend the chicken sandwich at all!

Took my wife there for the first time after an RSL game... We had a good time. She had the lobster stuffed shrimp (ok), and I had the red fish & lobster(delicious!). Our server, Misty, was great. Very friendly, attentive, and always on point. Will definitely go again. OH!! Order a Tiki drink, and you get to keep the cool glass!! My wife loved it!!

The food was sub par to put it lightly. The hush puppies were so dry I almost choked on them. My coconut shrimp were over cooked as well. My fish and stuffed shrimp were excellent. My wife got the mahi tacos and they were some of the best I've had. Dang I should have ordered those. The service is always fantastic. I will come come back again for the sevice alone.

I have been coming to this location since it opened and I have never left disappointed. It's your average chain restaurant but the service is what has kept me coming back. They are always attentive, quick to respond to your needs and make sure they keep my lemonade full. One of the better spots in Utah for crab I just wish they'd bring back the 1/2 priced happy hour appetizers. That made for a great late night snack. Its also nice to find a restaurant in Utah that is open until Midnight.

My husband and I stumbled upon the shack while search for a good fish joint. We rushed over at almost 10 pm. Relieved to find it was open til midnight. We have been back several times since. We ALWAYS sit in the booths in the bar. Tonight we went for our usual Sunday dinner after work ( the hours of this place totally coincide with my job as a tattoo artist, since our hours are late)... The establishment is always clean and inviting....the staff is always really on top of things and up beat, but not to pushy or chatty...on Tuesdays they have really great drink and personal appetitizers...everything is so fresh it almost makes me forget utah is land locked...

Meh. Been here several times and always ended up asking myself why. Everything that's fried is greasy and tasteless. Maybe their steamed stuff is better, not sure, never tried. Drinks are ok. The interior is kitschy and not in a good way. I'd avoid overall. Not worth the $$.

For a seafood place in Utah, it wasn't bad - good selection of crab, and the mussels were amazing. They have quite a few interesting cocktails as well, so the menu was one of the highlights. It's tough to find half decent seafood anywhere more than 100 miles from an ocean, but Joe's does a good job. The ambience was pretty noisy and busy, and because of that, I feel like my table was mostly overlooked. Our server walked past us several times without checking in when it would have been beneficial. And she seemed confused on multiple occasions. Overall, I'd recommend it for the food, but it is definitely overpriced considering the freshness. If they dropped the prices by maybe 15-20%, I'd go more often. I'd rate it 3.5/5 if I could.

I have been here multiple times and my experience have always been pleasant. I guess I don't have high expectation for fresh seafood being hundreds of miles away from the beach. I mean, if they served brine shrimp and they tasted stale, then by all means, grab the pitchfork, wield the torch and march to this place and it would be totally understandable. The food here in general, for me, is acceptable. The Orleans Steam Pot crawfish and shrimps are tasteless, I have to dip them into melted butter, or the steam juice at the bottom of the pot, which is salty and surprisingly spicy. It is fun dish to eat though, cracking the crawfish open with bare hands, especially when you have a good company to gossip with. The Blackened Mahi Tacos is just ok. The salsa is tasty but the tacos in overall feel a bit dry. They do have food that is fantastic though, like the Fried Calamari which I like a lot. Very thickly breaded. And the drinks are marvelous! Like, seriously. Especially Hurricane No 5. Very strongly concocted by Utah's standard and on Tuesday, you can get one for 2 dollars. Very good deal and if you're not careful, you'll end up going to the movie feeling all tipsy. I gave this place 4 stars because even though their food is hit or miss, the overall environment of this place is full of energy. It gets you pumped up for the movie afterwards. The servers always smile and I never had anything to complain other than the food, which is again, not horrible.

I was super hesitant to go here considering the horrible reviews, but we really wanted sea food before a movie and it seemed to be the only choice so we risked it ... I'm glad we did! We had a solid meal at Joe's! I ordered their Mahi entree and asked it be blackened - it was great! It wasn't very spicy but it was full of flavor and the fish was fresh and well cooked! The cheesey potatoes were good as was their corn (which was so good we jokingly called it crack corn all night). My boyfriend ordered the plank salmon which he also loved! The service was pleasant. Our waiter Jamie was very energetic and nice. The atmosphere is obviously loud but it wasn't disruptive to our date at all, and I think it would be great for a family! We will likely return next time we are down at that theatre.

Nothing special, it feels like the food aren't prepared right. They don't taste good and too pricey in my opinion. When you think of seafoods you want it to look fresh and more like a dive style so seeing them in bulk served in a bucket is enticing but the taste was disappointing. Not worth it for me!

    (2)
  • Daniel R.

Don't. Just don't. I realize it convenient for a date/ dinner & movie. But it's not worth it. This place is obnoxious and gross. I've literally only one time in my life complained about the food and didn't want to pay for my meal and it was here. They offered me another meal, but I didn't want it. *fool me once... Not again.

this place is honestly, just average. every time i come here (past 10 years or so) i always wonder how it stays in business, but it seems to have lasted quite awhile. i use to live in taylorsville and the jordan landing location was closer, but i always found that the food is better at the sandy location. the service is usually great from all staff. service is excellent and the staff is a lively group. their cocktails always disappoint me - i doubt there is much alcohol in them. for the appetizers i love their garlic mussels or their double dip (spinach artichoke and crab dips). everyone loves their steam buckets, but i can't eat it cause i'm a clean freak and hate it when my hands feel dirty. so i usually get a fish or shrimp dish. something that i can eat with my fork and knife lol! i pass on their dessert as i've never had anything good.

I previously countered the haters. Now I'm countering myself. I still don't expect much. After all, it is Joe's and I expect mediocre, slightly overpriced seafood. We mainly go for the indoor playground. But, we used to get fairly consistent service and the last few trips have resulted in us having to track down another server to meet our basic needs. Some of the servers seem to think that their only requirement is to take orders while flirting with husbands and children for a few minutes. After that, poof...they be gone... My recent king crab order was also even punier and more overcooked than usual. It's not like I'm some demanding a-hole. We come when it's not busy so all we need is a semi conscious server and somebody in the back who can reheat some frozen seafood without making crab jerky. I'm taking away a star for crappy service and one for overcooked crustaceans...

  • Kelsi B.

I'm honestly surprised that this place has gotten so many bad reviews. My boyfriend and I come here every couple of months or so for date nights, and we love it! In my experience, the best part about Joe's is the service. We've always had the most energetic and attentive waiters and waitresses. On our last visit, our waiter's name was Cinch, and he was great! We've never waited too long for anything, and everyone always seems to have a smile on their face. The atmosphere is vibrant, fun and casual. For everyone complaining about the food, I do hope you realize we live in a landlocked state. If you want fresh-out-of-the-water seafood, you're going to have to wait until you vacation on the coast. I'm actually a big fan of Joe's food. I've tried most of their fish dishes, platters of assorted seafood, and the boyfriend usually gets something with crab. We have genuinely liked everything that we have tried. This place is in the perfect location for a dinner and movie date night. I would recommend it to friends, and I'm sure the boyfriend and I will be back again soon.

Before I stopped coming to this place, I wondered repeatedly why I was coming there at all. I suppose it was the best alternative in the area, but it definitely wasn't for the food or the dubious thrill of hearing "Cotton Eyed Joe"blasting on the overhead PAs a couple thousand times and watching the restaurant staff cavort around like idiots, almost like clockwork and without regard to any of those loathsome public sing-a-long birthday celebrations. This, as you may have guessed, this place can get exceedingly and quite annoyingly loud. They do quasi-dance and stumble around like fools amazingly well, but the food is always suspect. Vida summed it up best with the crappy food for a premium dollar, but I'd opt more for substandard rather than crappy. The shrimp was not especially worth eating and the crab was well-pulverized, the envy of any canning company you'd care to name. It almost, but not quite, feels like I've been robbed when I left, vowing never to return, but fortunately, the last time stuck. It can be an interesting experience here, depending on how socially lubed with chemical refreshments you may be, but it certainly is not a necessary one and even though Red Lobster has fallen lower on the radar with their latest round of slippage, quality is better there and so, generally, is the price.

I really haven't found a seafood joint in Utah that satisfies me. But Joe's is okay. I just feel I shouldn't expect fresh seafood from Utah, and what they have to offer, I should just stop complaining and accept it! Sad but true... They really had a lot of choices on the menu, but most was really expensive. We got Clam chowder, fried Calamari and the Bean Town steam pot. It costed is $61 before tips for 2 people and we were still hungry at the end of the day. I would suggest getting individual entrees. They looked more filling and are more reasonably priced than the steam pots.

  • Anon A.

Meh..crab is good in general and that's usually all I get. The service is usually pretty good but it's so expensive that we rarely go here. The waiter recommended the crag nachos which again were meh and we had barely gotten the nachos when our buckets arrived that we had to choose between them and just let the nachos get cold and gross. The dancing is freaking obnoxious...it's not cute...no one likes it..just stop please for the love of God.

The fish is ok but the dishes to tend be very salty. The prices are a bit on the high side. You'll spend $14 for fish, $20 or more for a bucket of crab legs. All in all, it was just ok. If it were cheaper I might go back.

The most terrible food, seasonings are way salty, had the rag in Cajun, tasted more like a salt lick. The spiked tea was so sugary could not even taste the tea. Actually had manager take meal off bill. But given how my gut hurts the next day from the grease, which who knows why their is grease in steam pot? Will never frequent this chain again!

I stopped on for a quick lunch. I met a lovely bartender Julie who was bubbly, energetic and efficient. She effectively conveyed that she wanted my experience to be a good one. I ordered the joes original smoke pot with a combo of crabs and shrimp. Half of the crabs were over steamed. The shells were squishy and soft and the potatoes mushy. If you managed up get the crabs open the meat was stuck to the shell. I was told that can happen if they were molting. It has happened to me at home and they were just steamed too long. When I got down yo the shrimp and they were limp and again the meat was sticking to the shell. Julie offered to try to fix it and she did. I don't mind if the shellfish is frozen but it needs to be prepared properly.

We came here for a number of times already. We came in during lunch, dinner or late supper after watching late movie in the Megaplex. In the overall, we like this restaurant. What we like: 1. Playground for my six year old to have fun while waiting for our food 2. The servers are having fun and hence, the excitement transferred to the people coming to the restaurant 3. Location is great, which is in front of the cinema, so it is perfect while waiting for a movie or after watching late night movie 4. The restaurant opens until very late night 5. The food is good. I like to start with calamari or classic sampler as appetizer; then I followed with the jambalaya pasta (Pasta Laya) or Crawfish Etoufee for my main dish while my wife like the shrimp pasta alfredo. We often shared the spicy steam pot (seafood and sausage in a pot) for our family. 6. The drink is OK. We like the "shark bite drink"... well my son would take the shark for his toy for the night. My wife like the margarita in a jar, pretty unique... 7. Their dessert of "Crabbie Apple Crumble" is great. Good to share for 2-3 people. The price is rather steep for the simplicity of the food, but I guess we're paying for the casual yet "hippy" ambience and freshness of the seafood.

I've watched commercials for Joe's Crab Shack with delight & disgust; it's a delightful experience because my mouth is watering & I end up drooling before the commercial ends but feel disgusted since we don't have a Joe's Crab Shack over here. This was one of the places I wanted to visit on my trip to Utah & I almost broke my ankle, jumping off the treadmill when I heard my co-workers were taking me to oe's Crab Shack. Even though, it was an hour+ drive to get there, I was so happy about finally being able to eat here that I didn't care it took us over an hour to reach our destination. I loved their interior design of Joe's Crab Shack & I loved that they featured pictures of the menu items (ALWAYS a plus in my book). When our food arrived, it was pretty magical since everyone stopped talking & started to stuff their mouths with the yummy seafood. Everyone else was too full from drinking beer to order dessert, but I always make room for dessert especially when they offer smores on a skillet. The graham crackers covered the bottom of the skillet, followed by burnt marshmallows & melted chocolate on top. My experience was perfection, I only wish we had a Joe's Crab Shack in Hawaii so I could enjoy their food year round.

Food is great but their service is the worst. Last two times we have visited this exact restaurant, we sat for over 30 minutes without getting any help. Each time we decided to walk out because we were also going to see a movie at the adjacent movie theater. So we weren't weren't willing to wait an half hour, sitting in a booth, waiting for our server to see us.

Aweful, aweful, aweful...what else can I say? Overpriced and just below average quality food. It's a chain and it shows. Fresh seafood in Utah...I should have known better!

I like crab's. They have an array of items to choose from... crab, shrimp, salmon, pasta, burgers, sandwiches, ribs, salads, dirty rice, veggies, etc. Some of it is deep fried, some of it's blackened, and some of it's steamed and/or grilled. The prices are fair, and they serve Coke products, and a full bar. My husband and I stopped in for some dinner with our children. They have a large indoor playground (complete with hand sanitizer dispensers). You can ask to be seated near the playground - they have large floor to ceiling windows, so you can always see your children in the playground area. Because my husband and I were prepared to have a "heavy" conversation. This restaurant seemed ideal. The kids would be occupied with the playground, paper menus & crayons. Hubby and I ordered drinks and appetizers, and we were able to have our conversation without "boring" the kids. This location is right near a movie theater, and also the South Towne Expo center. It's a great place to eat before or after a movie, or an event. So go on...get crabby! ;)

This place is like Bubba Gumps of Utah. Big business in selling swag and overpriced crap to kid's. They have an indoor play area for kid's so you see where this is going. Located in Sandy, children rule. I feel like im eating at a place in Disneyland. Crappy food for premium dollar. Seafood is frozen, slathered in butter, or fried. Prices are steep. I mean more expensive then Red Lobster. Service is usually slow but thats because they are all young and inexperienced. I have never seen a manager on duty.

  • Abraham Y.

Great place overall, especially if you have kids and want good seafood without going to a quiet restaurant. Joe's is very family friendly, it's the only nicer restaurant I know that has a kids playground! The beachside bbq steam pot is awesome. I love any steam pot with the sausage.

I've been here many times and always had a good experience. My hubby and I went yesterday for lunch before going to a movie. We had a gift card and a coupon for a free appetizer. First off, I want to say our server Julie ROCKED!!! If you go, ask for her. She is super friendly, attentive, knows her stuff and kept the water and iced tea flowing. Really an asset to the restaurant. Our appetizer was crab stuffed mushrooms. I've had stuffed mushrooms at other places and most of the time you get a good sized shroom with a small scoop of the stuffing. Not there. The stuffing was twice the size of the mushroom and really good. It's a mix of crab, seasonings, peppers and breading. It's served with two pieces of garlic toast too. I had the shrimp trio and the hubs had the crab stuffed shrimp. Both dishes came with a plateful of broccoli, his with dirty rice and mine with white rice. He wasn't too fond of the dirty rice and neither was I. My trio had crab stuffed shrimp, malibu shrimp and coconut shrimp. The mango pico that was with my malibu was so good we asked for a small bowl of it and put it on our broccoli. The coconut shrimp had coconut! Imagine that! I've had coconut shrimp at other establishments that was missing or had very little coconut. This was good. And it had a peach (?) plum sauce for dipping. We only ate half our entrees since we were pretty full. I'm so looking forward to mine for lunch today. Four stars out of five since it was a bit expensive. But we had a wonderful experience and good food.

Its an okay place to go get seafood. It's not bad, yet its not high quality sea food, but then again for a state that doesn't have an ocean to get fresh things, it's quite okay. The meal was cool, we had the nachos which were delish. No joke. Then we had one of those big pots with a bunch of stuff and everyone in the table shared everything, there were 4 of us there. I like the atmosphere, although the service was on the slow side and didn't show any interest on earning the tip, but whatever, we left with an okay feeling. Its great for the kids, it even has like a big slide with a bunch of stations and stuff. A day or two later... I pooped green. yeah, you read it. I pooed green. and not only myself, but I had to ask the other 3 peeps (plus other friends who I ate with at other places that weekend) and guess what.. my three other friends that went to the crab shack with me POOED GREEN TOO. I dont know what it caused it. It didn't hurt, it wasn't killing me or them, but it was green and it was scary; thus, they get 2 stars. You little mystery ingredient in your crab. smh.

So, you go to a seafood restaurant that is not by the sea...yeah. Don't expect what you would get on the coasts. Everything is overpriced, but what can you do when you're landlocked in the middle of a desert? It suffices, but definitely does not compare if you had any food near the ocean. Nonetheless, it isn't too shabby of a restaurant. I like the ocean theme they got going on and it's pretty fun for kids or my little brothers.

We love coming to this Joe's Crab shack because it's near the movie theatre! Sandy is a beautiful place, you have about 3-4 restaurants across the theatre and you don't run into many teenagers. My Boyfriend and I love the service there. We always get seated in our regular booth and have the same waitress serve us. The only thing is we remember our waitress but they don't remember us. Knowing you see a lot of people go there. We get greeted friendly and fast. They meets our needs. We always order the Classic Sampler. That's a must. It comes with tortilla chips, calamari, fireballs and and crab dip! It's always fresh. And we love ordering our steampots it's worth it! It's pricey but I wouldn't have it any other way. Sometimes you get a deal. If you donate money which is $10, you get a coupon for a classic steampots which is about $20 bucks which saves you money. I love their frozen Bahama momma! It's very refreshing! I would always get two. Even their manager and waitress comes and asked us about the food and the service.

Blah. Joe's is kinda gritty, the food is forgettable and uninspired. They are trying to make it feel like some coastal seafood experience but when it's mass produced, it looses all that charm. All the restaurants around here are pretty much the same sentiment. I'd rather smuggle in a PBJ to the movies than bother with this or any of the mediocre eating establishments at Jordan Commons. Plus it would be extra hilarious to whisper annoying things all during the movie with peanut butter breath.

I love to hate the haters of this Joe's! I go in for one thing only. The Crawfish. Its their New Orleans steam pot that brings me back over and over again. Yes some humans cant handle the "Hands on Side" of Joe's, but there is a Chilis down the road so get out of my place. I love the spice I get with my steam pot and I really like how its not super busy like the on on fisherman's wharf San Fran. I could easily eat here multiple times a week. Some complain about the price. Da, its Joe's, you should have know that before coming to play. See you there.

We went for some crab tonight and when it came my husbands snow crab was under cooked so we asked the waiter to get him some new crab. The manger came out with rubber gloves and broke the crab open at the table and every good piece he found tried to feed to my husband! Wow not cool!! After all that we were not only humiliated but charged for it.

Don't bother going here to this location . Each staff member looked/acted like they could care less to be there. And Even when I asked the Manager who was walking by for a new drink in clean glass he looked at me like I was crazy and told me to wait for the waiter.......sad

This is my second time here. I tried to give it a second chance because the first time I went my crab was cold. This time the food was better (still not great) and Liz my waiter was awesome, but the person in charge of greeting us had poor customer service. I needed change to leave a tip and she was part of a big dance number that all the waiters did. We made eye contact 3 times as I stood at her menu table and she didn't come over. After 5 minutes I interrupted and asked if she could get me some change. I'm not trying to be unfair, but seriously this is the absolute last time I will go to a Joe's Crab Shack. Food isn't great, customer service is worse. Great restaurants have good food and better customer service.

I love crab......seriously LOVE it! That said, where the hell do I find it in Utah!? Everyone tells me, "Well, what do you expect from a landlocked state?" Yeah, that would make perfect sense if there weren't a totally ridiculous number of sushi joints in Utah! Many of them are great too! I hold firm to my opinion that we could get crab here if we wanted it bad enough. So, you'll excuse me if I love Joe's Crab Shack just a little bit. Or used to, rather, when they offered whole crabs. Now, they just offer steam pots with some crab and various other things all packed in one pot. It was still pretty good, I guess, but when I want a WHOLE crab, nothing else will do, dammit! For a chain, I still like it. The concept is a little tired now, I guess, but the drinks are strong, the service is always very good, and they do serve my favorite spider-like food in the world, even if it is pretty far removed from the ocean.

So, I've been here a couple of times now.. The first time I wasn't too impressed, the food got cold way too quickly and cold seafood really isn't the greatest. This last time we went I ordered a new menu item "Lobster Daddy Bucket". The lobster was extremely overcooked and rubbery, the corn was still hard, and the potatos hadn't been cooked through. My wife ordered the Fish and Shrimp, the Shrimp was ok, but the Fish was slimy and tasted like it had been sitting on a counter top all day (Probably to thaw). Not sure if we just went on the wrong night our server filled our drinks once and was done checking on us. Next time I get the hankering for seafood, I'll stick with sushi. Oh side note on the restrooms, the drains have fur growing on them, I wonder when the last time a bathroom was actually cleaned and not just restocked.

  • Frank M.

Yeah I go with everyone else who rated this shack, for the price this place blows. You're gonna drop $25 a person and if you wanna drink its gonna be $377 a person. And unless you brought your own heroine your gonna have to resort to asking any of your waiters or waitresses for a hook up, because I'm sure any of them will be able to hook you up. The food isn't bad, the place is just tacky and the servers are classless so I feel like I'm paying JUST for the food and the food isn't good enough for that. I'm eating my left overs as I write this.

  • Alan B.

Where to start? Let me just say if your wallet is heavy, Joe's can lighten it up in a hurry. Way overpriced! The crab pot for two came in at 40.00 and for this you get impossible to deal with dungeness crab legs, a couple flavorless sausages, 2 ears of over cooked corn, some mid grade shell-on shrimp, and a bunch of red potatoes. The boil is way to salty with very little spice. The melted butter is like fry oil not true butter. My wife had one of the seafood platters and all the fish was deep fried....Gag The mussel diablo appetizer was the only item with flavor. Needless to say 2 adults 1 teen no cocktails, beverages or dessert and we dropped $84.00. I'm still puckering! Service is not even worth reviewing. The staff seemed like they were required to leave their minds in their cars. Equal opportunity is awesome but please give me one person with the lights on. If this is on your list as it was ours, study and trust these reviews and think twice. The only good thing I can think of is they make Red Lobster look like a discount restaurant with premium food. That's not saying much!

I Like Sea Food For The Most Part. Joe's Was Fun To Try Once But I Definitely Thought It Was A Bit Pricey, Especially Since I Took My 2 Kids And They Barely Ate Anything. They Would Rather Play In The Play Area And Run Around Then Eat Their Meals. I Would Say That If You Just Went With ADULTS It Would Be A Good Fun Time.

only reason i'm even giving this place 2 stars is for the decent tasting boiled shrimp appetizer. that means none of them were mushy or tinny. every other part of the experience was negative stars. first, difficult to find the front door. after finding the front door we headed to the bar. i sat down and my husband went to the WC. i sat there while the bartender and some helper bee were cleaning liquor bottles. and then i sat some more. then she made a joke about how busy she was, though there were no other patrons at the bar or servers requesting drinks. my husband returned and we sat some more. then i went to the WC. when i returned my drink was there, but no drink for my man. WTF? a min later his absolute martini up w/ olives arrived and it was PINK. we both looked at it quizzically wondering what exactly that was. we came to the conclusion she had added cranberry juice. when we asked she said, "isn't that what you ordered? Didn't I repeat your order back to you?" when it finally arrived as it was ordered it was a thimbles worth and $7. a bit later we ordered the shrimp. it arrived and the bartender promptly left, in her coat. she asked someone to watch the bar who did offer me a second drink and brought us water. when the bartender returned she said nothing to us and then we had to request the check. worst apres ski experience EVER!!!!
