Oh Mom's... You've been here forever. (Literally. Like a hundred years. Can't remember exactly but the story is on their menu.) Food is decent... I think we ordered the wrong thing the last time we ate here. We got broiled chicken. I guess we were figuring small town food, how could fried chicken be bad? It was pretty bad. Again, I just think we ordered the wrong thing. The chicken was bland, like they didn't season it. I wasn't really a fan of their mashed potatoes either... but they had white gravy on them that had big bits of sausage in it. Pretty cool! Homemade! Their scones however... OMIGOSH! SO GOOD. However, it's not what most people would think a scone would be. My mom called it indian fry bread. She was right... Slightly sweet and flat like fry bread. Yum. I think this type of "scone" is typical to the area. They had a salad bar that was interesting. Typical iceberg lettuce and that was about it for fresh veggies. They had canned peas out and beets. I'm not a pea fan and also not so much a fan of canned veggies. However, I'm told that's pretty typical, too. They had good marinated mushrooms though! Also, they had a "salad" that was more like a dessert than a salad. My family eats these kind of "salads." They're made with jello! Normally I'm not that big a fan of these type of "salads." It was made with pistachio pudding, pistachios, pineapple, and whipped cream. I actually liked it! I think it was at that point I told my mother (who I was on a road trip with) that we'd been in Utah too long. HA! It's a good place to stop and my family's eaten here since forever. Try it, you'll probably like it! It's not the healthiest food to eat, but it's pretty darn good.

Okay, I agree with the less than stellar reviews this place got. I went here last summer (yes, it was that bad that I remember) and was very disappointed with both the food and the service. 1. The older woman that served us (Mom?) acted like she didn't want to serve us at all, like it was a big inconvenience to her. She forgot to bring my drink and tried her best to ignore us. Let it be known, my husband, brother-in-law and I look like average joes, so its not like we are bizarre-looking strangers with tattoos and piercings galore. 2. There were children working in the kitchen. When "Mom" went back there it seemed that she was busy managing a daycare. 3. The food was not what I would expect from a local cafe/diner. I ordered the hot roast beef sandwich. I wasn't expecting gourmet food, but I've eaten at truck stops that served delicious, down home comfort food. The bread was heated in a toaster, the meat looked like it came from a can. Kinda icky. I really like minimizing the amount of fast food I eat when driving across country, but in this case, fast food would have been tasted better and wouldn't feel like a rip-off. If you decide to eat here, make sure you catch "Mom" on a good day. Also, don't believe everything you read in a guidebook.

The food was So So. Some of the family thought it the best others were okay. The fried bread was good. Not heavy like some I have had. But the waitress we had was way beyond the best. We had gone down to Gunnison for family reunion. Had to be one of the worst weekends.. Cold, Cold, Cold and the wind at 55. We left Gunnison and called Mom's on our way to Salina. We started as 9 and quickly became 16. Our waitress had the back area and a couple of tables at the front. She was quick, nice and did not get perplexed when some of the family was none to pleased about their drinks. They even brought out plates so we could enjoy the birthday cake for my brother we brought.. I would have to say the food has gone a little down in the years I have been going there. But that waitress.. TOPS!!!!!!

We too were greatly anticipating quaint diner meals all along our 2012 road trip to Colorado. Took back roads instead of interstate expecting to see one in every little burg. SUBWAY, SUBWAY, SUBWAY !!!! We refused to succumb to the predictable fast food boredom and held out until at last we found Moms Cafe. We had our first Chicken Fried Steak ever and those yummy Utah scones smothered in honey butter. Well it turns out that, after then embarking on a quest to find the best chicken fried steak in our hemisphere, Moms still wins the prize. And the atmosphere was amazing. We say shame on you (younger folk?) who don't appreciate old fashioned americana! If you prefer prefab fast food, please stick with subway and let the rest of us enjoy our waitresses in those great old uniforms who are probably exhausted after being on their feet for years and years.

So There is nothing i like more than fresh ingredients and great service and MOMS has both. Their fries are made fresh cut potatoes and are delcious . Burgers are made from angus beef they have the best coffee I have ever had in my life. the end

Stopped at Mom's on 2011 motorcycle trip. I had the chicken fried steak, I thought it was good. The hot donuts with the meal was also good, the price of the meal was inexpensive. I will stop at Mom's again when in the area.

On a road trip nothing hits the spot like a deluxe cheeseburger and fresh homemade fries from Mom's Cafe. Make sure you get a piece of apple pie or a scone for desert. My only disappointment is that the waitresses no longer wear the old 1950s outfits.

    (4)
  • Keith K.

Really, it is time for people to get over the quaintness factor and take a look at the Emperor...she is wearing no clothes. Every vegetable in the place came from a can. Every ingredient on the salad bar except the iceberg lettuce came in a can. The "scone" is a deep-fried piece of dough, served with weird and unhealthful sauce (this was undeniably tasty, probably the best part of the meal in fact)...so quit calling this a good restaurant...if you liked it, you liked it because of the IDEA of this restaurant...owner-waitresses with attitude slinging burgers and pie in a 50's diner in the middle of nowhere town where 1/2 the stores have been vacant for years and tumbleweed rules the streets...every complaint from the low-raters is accurate...every rave from the sycophants is hyperbole by people who are digging the concept and ignoring the food...or perhaps they just don't get out much

This may be the spot during the day, but we came to Mom's Cafe for a late dinner one hour before closing. So that's the grain of salt with which you should take this review. Then again, customers shouldn't have to worry about grains of salt - if you're gonna serve food during posted business hours, you've gotta serve it right. I think Mom had already gone to bed and her tired daughters were left to mop up. Don't get me wrong: Everything was edible, but the food seemed exhausted and the portions underwhelming. Were it not for the fact that this was in the middle of Nowhere, UT and that it was what it was (an old-time diner), I would mutter, "Meh, I've had better." We ordered the CHICKEN-FRIED STEAK and the BREADED VEAL CUTLET dinners. Since the salad bar looked nasty (chopped iceberg and dressing), we opted for potato sides: baked and mashed, respectively. The former was the smallest baked potato I've ever laid eyes on; the latter was a tiny scoop that would get lost in a kid's ice cream cone. I must respectfully disagree with a previous Yelper concerning the CFS being the best ever: it was surprisingly not chicken-fried! As in, there was no discernible batter (hence the name). It may well have been a fried steak, but certainly not chicken-fried. To Mom's credit, the (C)FS had a nice beefy flavor to it. The veal cutlet was surprisingly better than the steak, but waaay too salty. Both dishes came with clumpy gravy and what looked like leftover boiled broccoli. As for the notorious Honey Butter Sauce that accompanies the fried scones, it is curious that honey and butter are just about the last ingredients on the list, after high fructose corn syrup and other industrial delights. Hey, I'm all for excess, but I would have preferred Mom's to deliver that with better food.

Twilight zone experience. Driving driving driving when a sign appears "best food in town" *reality check* "only restaurant in town", but next door to the Pawn Shop/ Tanning Salon, and the Movie Rental/ Pizza parlor, I had to wonder why Mom's Cafe didn't have a sign that read "Mom's Cafe/ Bookstore". Every business in this town was two-fold, and there was even a typewriter repair shop...who still owns a typewriter? I digress. We enter and head towards the back, where a huge table of truck drivers were taking up 3-4 tables. Conversations immediately overheard: "That's what people's sister's are for" "He choked me until I was blue" We sit and peruse the menu while a man with his name embroidered into his belt eats his lunch. Why did I notice his belt, you ask? Because the knife that was attached to his belt was distracting me. Total recall to the film "Pulp Fiction". Even after reading on the menu that Mom's boasted the best fish & chips, and that many celebrities had eaten here, we decide to order a grilled cheese and a BLT. You can't really screw those sandwiches up. Or so I thought. My BLT was just fine, outside of the toast which scarred the roof of my mouth, it was filling. The grilled cheese on the other hand...this would be the recipe for the grilled cheese we received: 2 pieces stale wonder bread 1 slice American cheese place bread in toaster when bread is warm, remove from toaster, add slice of cheese, serve booooo This is the topper: as I was finishing my BLT, a woman came rushing out of the restroom (after quite a long visit) and shuffled directly to the kitchen window and excitedly stated, "Whoever made that bean soup..." and gave the thumbs up to the cooks. Gross. Please never let me find myself stuck in Salina, UT...please

Fill 'er up good at Mom's before heading back onto that long drive to wherever it is you're going (because it's going to be a long drive no matter what direction you go to reach anything). Mom's was great - just what we needed to recharge our tummies! Their specialty is their "scone"... which I was surprised to find was much more funnel cake-like than any scone I've ever tried. Pass on the honey-butter though - sadly, there is barely anything recognizable as real food in that corn syrupy mess (what a shame, as the concept of honey butter is both enticing and easily executed in a more natural form!). My companion ordered the chicken fried steak with about four potatoes worth of french fries, and she thoroughly enjoyed it. I opted for the french dip, a roast beef sandwich with au jus. The best part of the sandwich was the roast beef was real beef - not deli-sliced crap that came in cellophane. The atmosphere is pure diner goodness, and the waitress is just what you would expect her to be in a diner in Salina, Utah. Don't forget to buy some local salt before you go! It's "ancient".

For years as we drove to Boulder Colorado from California, 15 North to the 70 East was the quickest route. On one trip, we stumbled onto Mom's and have been going ever since. It a horse short of being a one-horse town, but this place is great. I have to admit I've only had two dishes - biscuits and gravy for breakfast and chicken-fried steak for lunch or dinner. You can feel your arteries hardening, but it's worth every bite.

  • Matt L.

Breakfast here was exactly what I needed before the 8 hour drive to Denver from our campsite. I got Mom's special (pork chops and eggs) and biscuits and gravy and finished it all up. The waitress was friendly and mellow and the food was tasty. I got a "scone" but I think they don't realize that it's actually a doughnut. Right? I mean, it's clearly way more doughnutty or possibly funnel cakey than sconish. In any case, it was delicious-- especially with the honey butter-- but I'm not convinced it's a scone. Worth a stop here! And yes, it's a little odd and eerie in a good way. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sc…

It's homecooking in a small town.. What can you say. Everything is deep fried, even the dessert. If you enjoy home cooking...you can't beat Mom's Cafe. I had to eat a healthy the rest of the week to push the grease through.

  • Kristina R.

It has been like over 10 years and my husband is still saying he hasn't found fried chicken better than Mom's Cafe. It was a great dinner and it being in an old school diner-- perfect. Scones that are more doughnut like come with your meal with hot honey butter. The next best part of our visit was as we were heading out we got to see a huge bat colony departing into the onset of night from one of the near by buildings.

What a relief to find this place. The trout was excellent. Thumbs up on the roast beef au jus and scone. The salad bar suck though. How do people in the boonies survive without decent vegetables?

A-Ok "hole in the wall" eats for an area that is a culinary wasteland.

  • Selha V.

Yes, this place is in the middle of nowhere. Yes, the town itself is a dusty backwater that looks like most everyone has left. Yes, their scones with honey butter are simply the most sinful and delicious thing you can eat for breakfast or lunch. And, yes, Mom's is a one of a kind dining experience that everyone within 100 miles of here should experience. My partner had the chicken dumpling soup with home made dumplings. He ordered 3 extra servings to go and ate that soup in the car all the way to Page, AZ. The local Utah salt they serve and sell is a plus. This is an extraordinary eating establishment that is so obviously owned and managed by people who care about the details that make good food great. Do yourself a favor and let Mom make you a meal. You won't be sorry.

  • Daniel J.

After driving 10 hours, it's kinda nice to sit down and have your mom cook you a burger and insist you eat a peice of blueberry pie. "No thanks ma, I'm stuffed to the brim!" "Eat! EAT!! You're skin and bones!!" I can't argue! And of course she always knows best. That blueberry pie was ABSOLUTELY delicious.

Get the trout! Fantastic. The mashed potatoes were really good too. Finally, the bread was some unique and tasty.

Best Denver omlet west of... Denver. Don't k this place.

  • Suzanne D.

The BEST chicken-fried steak I've ever had. The best, the best! OMG the perfect gravy, the crisp breading, the tender cube steak, mashed potatoes...I ordered the cheeseburger and also ate half of my partner's plate. How was the cheeseburger? Delicious! Juicy, house-made patty, fresh bun, salty, cheesy...exactly what I wanted. Tomato and lettuce. This is not health food. It is what it is, but it's the best "what it is" I've ever had. Don't let my Los Angeles residency deter you. I grew up in the Midwest. Lots of diner, "home cooking" experience here. I'm not mad at canned corn as a side. That's what my mom did at home. Whenever I eat at a diner, I'm hoping this is how good it will be. I'm usually disappointed, but this was like finding the Holy Grail of diner food. And Utah Scones!! What is a "Utah Scone"? I'd never had one before, so I would describe it as similar to a funnel cake, but in a single patty of fried batter instead of the lacy version. Delicious. Squirt "honey butter" (main ingredients are neither honey nor butter) on like frosting and YUM. I repeat, this is not health food. Service was fast, a tad perfunctory (so what), food came out quickly, was hot and DELICIOUS. I must point out that a previous one-star reviewer was disappointed because the food isn't like it would be in Europe ('cause she knows!), aaannd gave five stars to a highway Waffle House. If you "know how it's supposed to be" at a place like this, then you'll LOVE IT. I'm sure the menu has pitfalls, but the classics seem to be as good as they get. Well worth the jog off the highway on your next road trip. We have marked our map!

Pretty nice small town dinner. Ordered salmon for dinner. Veggies were definitely canned. Salad bar was small. Salmon was delicious! Scones are not really scones and more like a funnel cake. Pretty nice find.

    (4)
  • Jack T.

I had some high expectations, seeing how well this place was rated by others. It wasn't bad. The scones were good, I liked the honey butter, never tried that before. I guess I would say the food is like mom would make. It was definitely like a homemade meal. The atmosphere was a little outdated, but then again this is a really small town. All in all, not a bad stop.

    (3)
  • Madelon M.

Respectable fish and chips with VERY good chips. Nice people. Did take out to nearby hotel. My husband went back in morning for scone which was very substantial. Glad this place is here in a small town of 3500.

Oh, Mom's. A slice of someone else's home in the middle of nowhere, Utah. If you're planning on trekking far off the I-15 to visit this place, don't. But, if you're passing through Salina looking for a wholesome meal from a place that is not a gas station, this is your stop. Mom's offers standard diner fare: never ending cups of coffee, eggs, burgers and the like. The food was well seasoned, but not memorable. Prices are reasonable. What makes this place unique is the clientele. Salina is a tiny town in a remote area of Utah. When we stepped in the place, we were immediately greeted by a roomful of locals. Real life cowboys, complete with hats, taking a rest, sharing stories over cups of coffee. It was like stepping back in time. There are no gabby customers on cell phones here. Just pie for dessert and eggs for breakfast.

    (4)
  • Brad P.

Hmmm, nice clean place, reasonable service, food NOT BAD, not good either, but definitely not all that... The scone is not a scone, its fried dough served with "honey butter", which has neither honey nor butter in the ingredients (try corn syrup, partially hydrogenated soy oil, et al). Paid extra (?) for improperly prepared poached eggs, and my wife's biscuits and gravy was not hot. Nothing special or innovative on the menu, somewhat better than fast food, my advice is stop if your there, not a destination...

    (2)
  • Tatiana F.

Like others who expected more, this cafe has seen better days.Saturday night and only two patrons? But my husband and I decided to give it a chance. Prices were higher than the establishment warrants, so we opted for the senior menu - very limited, more like a kiddy menu. Nevertheless, we opted for the spaghetti dinner. Simple salad bar, and sauce that may have come from a jar. The coconut cream pie was home made - traditional Crisco crust, and a little rubbery filling. The place needs a major cleaning. Waitress was friendly. Maybe their breakfasts are better.

  • Garen M.

Nice little old fashioned diner. The place is clean and the service is good. I had a chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and white gravy. Everything was tasty and served piping hot. If I lived here, I would eat at this place often.

  • Law K.

We love the restaurant. It is a tradition to stop at Mom's every trip to Vegas to see my sister from Denver where we live. My wife loves the Chicken Fried Steak and the kids all get Cheesburgers. They say there is something special about the burgers. My favorite is the pie. Today we all shared coconut cream pie, chocolate, and cherry. Everything was great. It is a family tradition.

    (5)
  • Sarah R.

Pretty much what I expected from the reviews and diner food. The side salad was ok, lots of iceberg and lots of dressing, but I was a little weirded out by the cold peas and small scoopful of chex mix on top? Not really used to pretzels in my salad. I got the fish and chips, the fish was three little cubes about 2" big, plus a TON of potatoes. Don't get this one if you are looking to fill up on fish. It was prepared decently though, hot and crispy and the fish was flakey. The 'scone' as other reviewers have mentioned was really more of a large doughy donut with no flavoring. I sprinkled some sugar on it but only could eat a few bites. Food was not awesome but was edible, and lots of it; the service was good and the food came super fast.

This is our second time stopping here between St George and Manti. The first time we were a little nervous because we typically are not fans of old time cafés. We were impressed the first time, and so we came again with our kids. Everything we ordered was good. It's good, home cooked food. Fresh made French fries, hand made burgers. Great flavor. Fun old cafe. We will make this a tradition to stop and eat at Mom's Famous Cafe.

Stop reading and get here. Had the Denver Sandwich and want to go back to Utah just for that!

  • Yul W.

This place is slightly off of I-15, but well worth the little drive. It is a true cafe with a "hometown"feel. The atmosphere matches the cafe. They have a variety of food. I had the trout and my girlfriend had the chicken fried steak. Both were delicious.

    (4)
  • Kim W.

They sell a great sea salt for $5. This is a great old fashioned diner. The menu items were a little more than you would expect, but the quality was good. Gourmet mined salt like RealSalt from Redmond, Utah, is mined rock salt that is crushed, screened, and packaged. It is not refined and contains many trace minerals that give it a pinkish color and unique flavor.

  • Jayni B.

While on road trips we like to patronize local eateries. We chose to take the few extra miles to go to Moms. The menu was a predictable selection of sandwiches, burgers, and home style fare. The food itself was not fresh or wholesome. Most I the items came out of a can. The only thing home made were the pies which were disappointing to be quite generous. I never written this in a review before, but....I wish I would have stopped at the Denny's mile before Mom's.

    (2)
  • Alex H.

first of all, DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU ARE A VEGETARIAN! unless you are craving a grilled cheese that tastes strikingly like it was made with meat grease or a salad full of iceberg lettuce. second of all, does anybody on yelp or in this entire town actually know what a scone is? we just ate fried, potentially undercooked dough with "honey and butter flavored topping." yelp has led us astray. aside from that, my friend spat out the avocado in her sandwich because it tasted so bad and the fries did not even taste like fries. i don't know how you mess up either of those things, but alas. only redeeming factor: the piccadilly fries. basically fried chunks of mashed potatoes. i'm into it.

    (2)
  • Heather W.

Just. No. I just can't with this place. There is just too much wrong. The food was bland, the service was terrible and it was filled with racists. We were just trying to have a nice breakfast while on a road trip. Glad I don't live in the area.

    (1)
  • Avi B.

Probably one of the best decisions my friends and I made on our way out of Utah. This cafe has the perfect genuine small town America vibe (for those of you who love traveling) and great food to top it. I got the rib eye steak - probably one of the best steaks I have ever had. If you're driving by Salina, the extra mile of driving is worth it.

  • Hien N.

Food and service was awesome the first time i stopped by. The second time I was a lil disappointed in the service. The scones are just delicious. It's a small joint in a small town so I wasn't expecting anything extravagant.

There's a lot to like about Mom's Cafe. Small town. Old, historic building. Diner menu. Waitresses (not servers, mind you) in the old school waitress attire. Locals filling up the booths. Yep, there are lots of great ingredients at play here which hit all the right buttons for me. So naturally I'm going to cut them some slack and adjust my expectations. Waitress a little bit surly? Shoot, there aren't any crisp white linens around and a sommelier on staff so I don't expect that level of professionalism. There's a wall in the back with photos taped up of people standing around dead things. Ambiance, baby. I'm cutting some slack when it comes to the food as well. I read a bit about the fish and chips so we decided to split an order. The chips were nice, and the fish nuggets were just fine as well. I'd order differently next time, but I wasn't put off by the meal either. Diner fare. Canned green beans. It's what I expected, it's what I got. What pushed things above the middle of the road for me was the pie. As a pie fiend I had to try the blueberry offering. Blueberry sour cream. Um, yes please. There was a long letter on the wall from Ashley Judd praising the pie, but I didn't base my decision on Ms. Judd's recommendation. Had it been Keri Russell, I would have been forced to order that pie. And not because she played a pie maker in Waitress. More because I'm powerless to Ms. Russell. I digress. The pie was a silky and sinful delight. It may not have had hand-picked blueberries, but it was cafe perfection. A thin, moist crust, a layer of creamy white indulgence, a generous portion of dark blueberry fruit mix, and a massive dollop of cream on top. Sans pie it's still a nice place to pop in, but I'd definitely save room for a slice to turn the small town stop into an experience. Prices are kinda high-ish for what you're getting, but in the grand scheme it's worth the extra dough to try Mom's over one of those just off the freeway fast food stops.

The tuna sandwich was decent but there were some frozen chunks of tuna when I took a bite into it and there could have been less mayo. Based on the competition in the surrounding area, though, I don't doubt that this cafe is your best bet.

  • Pat M.

Ordered eggs over medium, got over rubber . Ordered hamburger patties medium got cooked beyond recognition. Hash browns were cooked so crispy that they lacked flavor . Waitress was rude and service was terrible.

  • Debbie C.

We were so disappointed in this place. Service was pretty bad, food was a joke (I had soup that was obviously from a can and a half ham sandwich that appeared to have been made with the cheapest processed ham cold cuts (like the junky kind you don't buy in the grocery store - like Buddig's or whatever) and my husband had "veal" which seemed to have been bought as a frozen breaded patty from a costco lot, which was smothered in gravy that had a glue like consistency and only slightly better flavor, canned corn, and a gob of "mashed potatoes" that he couldn't even get his fork into, it was so petrified). Also, my husband's drink never arrived and he was never brought a salad, which he was supposed to have gotten, or even a plate for the salad bar. We like to go with mom & pop places when we travel, but seriously - the Denny's down the street would have been a much better option.

We stopped here on a whim coming back from Richfield. What an excellent surprise! I had the french dip and my boyfriend had a turkey sandwich with avocado. My french drip was EXCELLENT! The roast beef was tender and juicy, even before dipping into the au jus. We both had a piece of the blueberry sour cream pie. So delicious. Never had a pie quite like that before. We contemplated buying one to take home with us, but figured it wouldn't survive the long car trip very well. The service was super friendly, too. I think it was the owner that waited on us. She was wonderful. Go to Mom's and you won't regret it!

Really good. Just a good home small town feel. Good county fried steak it was tender and cooked really well. The gravy was good but nothing set it apart. Very good place I am really glad I stop in on my way though town.

We stopped in on our way from Salt Lake to Richfield, and chose here mostly because it was close to our route, and starving for lunch. We were not disappointed. Stepping into the diner felt like a step back in time, and I loved it. The waitress was extremely friendly, and she had a lot of good suggestions on the menu. I chose the breakfast burger, which came out piping hot, and was absolutely to die for! Definitely get yourself a scone for dessert. I'll be coming back if I ever have travels that direction.

On our way to Colorado we found this beautiful town and diner to eat. The food was awesome and the service was great. My husband had the country fried steak & said it was the best ever. In Hawaii they don't make it like here. They had a side with his food called a scone and was offered this honey butter topping that is only made in Utah. It was to die for!

My grandmother worked here, back when the place was fairly new so as a kid, when we would come up and visit my grandpa I would enjoy fun stories from my mom about my grandmother every time we would come here. Up until recently, about 6 years, I hadn't been back up to the area, but after my mom moved up here, visiting Mom's is pretty much the highlight of the area. My go to order is their chicken strip lunch combo that comes with a trip to the salad bar, giant strips, mashed potatoes, veggies, and a scone with honey butter. The chicken strips are huge, hot and juicy. The mashed potatoes are served with white gravy, which although not the most healthy choice so delicious. My favorite part of the meal though is my hot fresh scone with delicious honey butter. Now this isn't a traditional scone that you think of finding in your Starbucks, but a delicious piece of fried dough and it is amazing especially with honey butter. If you stop in you have to try one. On top of that, the service is amazing, super friendly, the decour is adorable, and the food is all homemade.

I think it's safe to say that we all envision a cross-country drive to involve cruising down picturesque roads while exploring fascinating sites along the way. Stopping at quaint restaurants for a one-of-a-kind experience is no doubt part of the mystique. I'm sad to say that most of middle American does not live up to that fantasy, at least when it comes to food. Despite having the modern convenience of my iphone and Yelp app in hand, it was remarkable how often I had to settle for some chain affair -- Subway, Applebees, etc. Even when I went off the beaten path, the best I could find were regional chains that hadn't yet gone national. It was something, I guess, but no where near what I was hoping for. Then, after being reinvigorated by a night in Bryce Canyon, I drove languidly through Utah and stopped in Salina. (Question, when Janis Joplin sings of Salina in Bobby McGee, is that Salina KS or Salina UT?) This place is what you imagine Main Street USA to look like -- small mom and pop stores, antiquated places like a video rental store (take that Netflix/iTunes). And at the heart of that quaint intersection is Mom's Cafe. When I walked in, I immediately felt like a foreigner -- in a good way -- the way a visitor 2000 miles from home ought to feel. People here were different (not good or bad, just different) and for once I could feel like I was somewhere I had never been before. I sat at the counter and ordered food, oddly aware that I was the only person eating alone who didn't look like a middle-aged trucker. I ordered a hamburger and fries. The burger was good enough and the fries a bit soggy. I didn't care so much, though. I was somewhere different and that was good enough for me.... So much so that I ordered some pie for good measure. I've read the other reviews a little, but I've stopped. They're cramping my style. My waitress was plenty kind. Not all of America puts on a smile when you walk in the door. Some people have business to attend to and don't try to sweeten you up with fluff. You're here for food. Sit down, take in the peacefulness of knowing you're in the middle of nowhere, and chill the F--- out.

Good food and a great atmosphere! Coming from a CA small town, it was reminiscient of my favorite diner back home but still different (and smaller). Don't hesitate to chekc this place out and don't even think about going to the Denny's if you're hungry and in Salina!

So completely overrated. I don't know what all of those other reviewers, here and elsewhere, are thinking. The food was mediocre, and the blueberry sourcream pie was completely inedible. The so-called salad bar was some tired iceberg and a handful of other unhappyvegetables, mostly out of cans. And the scones? Those are not scones. They might be deep-fat-fried biscuits, but they are not scones. They tasted of old fry oil and were like hockey pucks as soon as they cooled down. I wanted to like Mom's, I really did - but I just couldn't.

Exactly what you would expect from a small town in the west. Bland comfort food. I wasn't disappointed by the food but no reason to rave about it. I had a chicken fried steak which was ok, probably frozen and not made fresh. The mashed potatoes were not instant which is good. Service was average, once again, nothing to write home about. The scones...definitely not scones but more like Mexican pan dulce. Granted, it was very tasty with the honey and butter sauce and I would definitely go back for more but THESE ARE NOT SCONES!!!

Classic small town diner. Right on 89 so it's easy to find. Park on the street. I had a couple of burgers - very tasty, homemade style. If you like diner-style atmosphere and food, Mom's is definitely worth checking out.

Good home style breakfast, blueberry pancake was outstanding. Eggs were done right and my crispy hash browns came out as requested. Cool, old history and definitely worth a stop if you are passing through looking for breakfast.

Very quaint, small-town homey restaurant/diner. The service and food were good and the prices were fair. The place was quiet and clean. Much better than fast food. I had the bacon avocado turkey sandwich- yum!

Wow, what a depressing place. My fiance and I stopped here, lured by a roadside sign that promised something different than Denny's or McDonalds. In retrospect, we should have kept going. When I asked the waitress how she was doing, she did not reply...I thought she didn't hear me, so when she came back with our food, I asked her again...nothing. I started feeling like I was in a horror film where if you stay after dark, you get hunted by inbred freaks...it was that unwelcoming. I suppose the restaurant is a reflection of the town itself, which appears to be a run-down, dead-end kind of place. I couldn't wait to leave. Unfortunately, the experience was not mitigated by the food itself, which was mediocre, even by diner standards. Strangely, the place was packed, and I have no idea why. In the end, I felt a little compassion for the waitresses there, as they all looked like lifers with a lot of broken dreams. But not enough compassion to ever go back.

73 years old. Best bacon I have ever eaten. And best coconut cream pie in 73 years! Waitress was wonderful. Building 1878. Mom's started 1926. Should absolutely be featured on The Food Network.

How does this place have so many stars? After a long day of driving I choose to eat here for dinner after reading the yelp reviews but I was very disappointed. The first several things I tried to order from the menu were apparently no longer offered but I was not informed of this and it wasn't marked out on the menu. Also, you will not have an easy time finding a green vegetable on the menu. I ended up with the cream of broccoli soup which was obviously watered down as it was not creamy at all, chicken fingers with white gravy, mashed potatoes and white gravy (I mean white gravy with chicken and potatoes), corn which was cold and obviously canned, and a "scone". I don't know how they get away with calling those things scones. They should be called fried croissants. I ate about 1/3 of the meal before feeling like if I ate any more I would have a heart attack. I would have been better off and felt better about myself at subway. Maybe it was good at one point, but I just couldn't help but think "Gordon Ramsay would not tolerate this! "

The food were so-so and overpriced! Yikes! I paid $9 for a small fried lamb. I just learned there were different kind of scones. I was expecting a scone, like a regular one, but I got a greasy deep fried dough. I couldn't finish it. For a small town like Salina, I think they should adjust their prices. But I gave two stars because I liked their clam chowder.

Mmmm, there's no finer diner...with scones. It's in the middle of nowhere (sorry, Salina), but if you're traveling between Northern Utah and anywhere south, this is a great place to hit up. Very charming place, and a great place for both locals and passers-by. I think they even take credit cards, though it's a few years since I've been there. I'm sure Mom's will live on for many more years.

I had been here a few years before and it was fairly good. Not great, but I remember getting a satisfying and wholesome meal. It was good enough that I wanted to return some day. Lots of my friends have been there and have always been satisfied. Where else would you eat in Salina? Since then, "Mom" retired and the place has changed hands. The food is now execrable. It appears that the new owner has trimmed food costs to below what is necessary. A nearly empty restaurant during (what should have been) the dinner rush and an absence of locals shows a restaurant that that will (or should) be put of of its misery. I ordered the Broasted Chicken, which comes with canned (not frozen) corn, a "scone" (actually a sopapilla) and a miniscule scoop of mashed potatoes topped with white gravy. No matter what the old menu claims, this chicken arrives from their supplier (Sysco or wherever) frozen and breaded. They only throw frozen, prepared pieces into the pressure fryer and then serve. And don't, whatever you do, read the ingredients in the bottles of "butter & honey" concoction that are to be used with the "scones". Would it be too much to serve actual butter and honey? The service as fast, fine and friendly, so don't even think of faulting the staff for the problems; they are *all* at the top. Whomever ruined this venerable restaurant should be deeply ashamed. Avoid Mom's in Salina at all costs.

I stopped into Mom's while on a cross-country motorcycle tour. I am glad I found the place. I had the chicken fried steak which was delicious and a good sized portion. I also had couple of beers that were cheaply priced. Along with the diner came what Mom's calls a scone. In fact it's actually better than a scone because it's more like fried dough, similar to zeppole. The food and service was good all the way around. The classic style adds to the experience. Good stuff! Check out my blog "Tales of a Flying Brick" for more details...

This place has fallen off it's pedestal and it is nothing to crow about anymore. I even was feeling offalish and ordered the "fresh" liver. It was NOT like the liver I have had in Italy or New York. My mistake for ordering a dish like this in a hash hut I guess. My BF had the roast pork, the gravy was fake or just not made well. We ordered cherry pie and the pie crust was disgustingly breadish. Salinas in general sucks. Continue on to Torrey or Loa or Bicknell for a simple motel stay with chow options. Sorry Mom's.

Sure feels like Salina, UT alright. This place is pretty quiet, it's like going to grandma's, the grandma that is very proper and expects you to wear a napkin over your shirt. I guess my experience here was not so great, maybe because I went there at 7am. The food was OK, but there are definitely other diners out there that are way better. Worth a try only because it is in the middle of no where.

It's dim, it's quaint, it's homey. It's Mom's! Simple slices of Americana served up daily at down-home prices. :) Times visited: 1

Great spot for a quick dinner when passing through town. Decent food, and the kids liked it, too. Very good scones and pie.

The staff was very friendly when we were there. The food was made to order, but by & large the quality of ingredients was awful. On the positive side, our entrees were pretty good. Freshly grilled (meaning on a flat-top griddle, not a grill) pork chops & red trout. Both were maybe just a touch overcooked, but not bad at all. The side was frozen broccoli & carrot medley. Scones? Who ever heard of a deep fried scone? These were like fritters, except that fritters usually have pieces of something other than dough mixed in (e.g. corn, apple, crab, insert favorite mix-in). They're served with "honey-butter flavored" sauce that is purchased, with neither honey or butter on the ingredients list. 1st ingredient - HF corn syrup. Blech. How friggin hard is it to mix together some honey & butter?? Salad bar had a giant vat of old iceberg lettuce, brown not just on the edges from being cut, but all over. It seriously had to be a week old. And if you want me to believe Mom's making everything from scratch, at least put the dressing in tubs or dispensers instead of serving the bottles of store-bought Kraft & Wishbone. Mom's would have raving fans if they used fresh ingredients. They're not so far from SLC that it should be too hard to do.

Absolutely Fantastic! I was driving cross-country and looking for a good side of the road place and I found this hidden Gem. I had the chicken-pot pie (one of their daily special) and I still crave it even 2 years later. The apple pie for dessert was among the best I've had. What they did to make the scone so mouth watering is beyond me, but I have in heaven. If you are driving through Utah this is a must stop! It's in the small downtown part and is hard to miss.

Great find that is worth the extra 10min drive off the freeway. Trust me, don't waste your time at Denny's.

Eww. this is pretty much a middle-of-nowhere whole in the wall with standard middle of nowhere foods. Fried, iceberg lettuce is considered a salad, and high fructose corn syrup is the first ingredient in pretty much everything. (esp. that 'honey butter' they serve with the deep fried disk of dough) I don't think they know what a scone is either. Anywhere they would consider the deep friend dough you receive as an elephant ear or dough-boy. The servers there acted like it was a huge inconvenience to serve us. Thankfully we stopped while moving (trying to avoid the standard highway-fare) and wont have to ever worry about stopping in again.

If you are desperate and need food in Salina order their cheese burger. It and the fries are very good. Fast service but with an attitude. I think the waitresses own the place and wished they were at home watching reruns of Alice instead. Stay away from the scones unless you are looking for a stroke while eating tasteless doughnuts. It is served with honey butter out of squeeze bottle and honey and butter are listed as the 12th and 13th ingredient. Definitely not worth it.

My car almost overheated twice on the stretch of I-70 from Grand Mesa to I-15, and Salina, UT represented the first stop for gas in the southern Utah desert. Mom's was a welcome relief from the dry, August heat that nearly baked my car into oblivion. My two friends and I all ordered country fried steak, something that seemed appropriate in the Utah desert for some odd reason. While I've had better country fried steak, it was still pretty damned good considering all we had to eat since leaving New York were Subway sandwiches, Rockstar energy drinks, beef jerky and Jack Daniels (expect for the driver, no Fear and Loathing style activities this day in age). The fries were made of real potatoes and the service was friendly. If I'm ever in Salina again, I will make sure to not stuff myself and try some desert.

Amazing food. Don't go here without getting at least one of their scones with honey butter. The roast beef with au jus was excellent and rumor has it that the chicken fried steak is the best anywhere. And please dont leave without trying the pie. We had german chocolate and it was amazing.
