My favorites are the lamb ribs and the classic shepherds pie. Mmmmmm!!!!! The lamb ribs have an amazing BBQ sauce with delicious blue cheese. They compliment each other so well! My only complaint is sometimes the lamb ribs are tiny, and other times they are huge. I hate when they're small and you don't get an extra though. They serve a few different variations of shepherds pie, but the traditional is by far my favorite. the meat is always tender, the potatoes are perfect, and it's that perfect comfort meal that always hits the spot. I've also enjoyed the hot tuna sandwich and hot turkey sandwich. Both are sublime! They offer a great selection of beer and the service has always been pretty good. There was a period of time (about a year ago) where the service was so-so and the food wasn't always fresh (specifically salads), but I think they've fixed that problem now. All in all, great atmosphere, yummy food, and a nice addition to Ogden.

The old adage of you get what you pay for sadly doesn't hold true for this historic location. Although the service is fine and the atmosphere is great, the food leaves a lot to be desired. We had two meals tonight the first was the fish and chips. Now I'm trying to not be too overly critical of this traditional British fare since living in the UK for 4 years, but it wasn't good. The fish was served in small deep fried nuggets, and very mushy inside. The "chips" were actually french fries so soggy you almost needed to eat them with a spoon. My order of mussels was fine and came in a tasty white wine and tomato sauce. The mussels were very small and definitely only enough for an appetizer. By this experience alone I was going to give it two stars, but including the lamb quesadillas I had last visit, I give it a three.

Fun place, nicely decorated, very good beer , very relaxing atmosphere Conveniently located off the lobby of the Historic Ben Lomond Hotel. Fun layout of furniture & bar. Enjoyed the craft beer recommendations by our waiter. Food was above average. A very relaxing environment. We will be back when traveling on vacation.

Ogden's MacCool's is upscale pub fare, with a striving kitchen and very large menu and lots of salad opportunities that I did not try. I had the Gaelic Steak because of the special Idaho beef that I wanted to try. It was delicious. The variety I saw here was well executed for the most part, with opportunities and renditions of greatness. Greatness in food, within "Pub Land" is generally difficult to find. The bar is good with lots of Irish opportunities in whisky and beer both. The service is solid, and the decor is truly well thought out and warm, to the point that you can make this restaurant a romantic date night. It's in the very heart of Ogden on Washington and 25th in the largest building and hotel of Ogden (the Ben Lomand) so it's easy to find. I would give it a try. My steak was excellent with a good mushroom sauce. My son had a perfectly cooked piece of Salmon, and he swapped out potatoes, for cole slaw that was freshly made and had a perfectly light dressing. Maybe the best execution was the bread pudding dessert on the special Valentine's menu that was soft and had a great medley of berry flavors and sauce. The dessert and the MacCool's special, Perfect Irish Coffee to end it all, makes MacCool's a RECOMMENDED choice in Ogden for sure.

The beer was great... The wait staff was really nice... The food was ok, I don't think it was worth the cost... It also took a really long time for them to prepare the food... Then we ordered desert and that took almost as long.

One of the best restaurants here in Ogden. You could find different plates here than other restaurants. They serve lamb, which I love so much. Highly recommended.

I'm at the point where when I walk into an "Irish Pub" I'm always questioning the term before I even sit down. Let's face it, it's overdone and the definition has been skewed every which way with harps, shamrocks, kilts and Guinness on tap being the driving forces behind most justifications. However, I was pleased to see MacCool's is different, in a good way. Yes, the decor is somewhat similar, but the large open space is warm and inviting. Because of the cold weather, you must enter in from the hotel side entrance, keeping the dining and bar area warm. Smart. The bartender was friendly guy who offered to make me a Dark Pumpkin. I'd never heard of it and he explained it was a pint of half pumpkin ale and half Guinness. It sounded interesting, so I gave it a go. While I sat at the bar enjoying my drink, a few young ladies near the end of the bar started playing some Irish music on their fiddles and flute. And I have to say, they were really good! Definitely deserving of a few bills dropped into the violin case. Even though I only had the one drink (having eaten elsewhere earlier), I really enjoyed sitting in the relaxing atmosphere, listening to the music and realizing they deserve their Irish name more than most. Thank you.

Went there for lunch today. Took almost an hour to get our food and food was cold. No attempt by the staff to correct the problem. I love the Layton location but will never visit the Ogden location ever again. Horrible

I love this place. The food is wonderful, especially the Shepherds Pie. The chicken pot pie is also really good. Jamie is a fantastic server as well. Efficient, pleasant, friendly and competent. We come back every chance we get.

Closer to $$$ than $$ if you get a beer, appetizer or dessert. MacCools seems like a place to go for corned beef, potatoes and cabbage, but the quantity doesn't justify the price. Every time I get the corned beef, the quantity seems less and the quality goes down too. Very fatty cuts, and super thin slices like sandwich thin. Leaves me feeling hungry and I won't be getting it again. And I'm not even a 'big' eater. On the flip side, the pot pie is ridiculously huge, can't be finished in one sitting and near impossible to take home. The shepherds pie had hardly any meat, mostly a mashed potatoes and cheese dish. The Guinness was flat. Not as in it wasn't carbonated like Bud, but it literally had no head and tasted almost stale, probably an old keg they were trying to finish off. The apple crisp desert was very uninspired, mostly mushy flavorless apples, ice cream had freezer burn from sitting, just not worth the $6-7 spent. We complained, but it still showed up on the bill. Basically won't be going back, been there several times and too expensive for mediocre food and not that great of service. If you want much better quality food head to the 11th floor, Restaurant 1107 is about same price but much better dining experience, food, service, and an amazing view.

This was a nice, relaxing meal. I liked the atmosphere, good music, good drinks, decent food and good service. We stuck around and just hung out for quite a while before heading out. I was tempted to play a few rounds of shuffleboard on their table!

  • Daniel G.

I love a good Irish bar and MacCool's is as good as it gets in Ogden. They succeed with the traditional Guinness drinks - Black and Tan was on point - and had a couple that were new to me. We need to return to give a verdict on the kitchen but for now, the bar, staff, location, and ambience take the cake.

We had an absolutely horrible experience at MacFools. It was the worst and rudest service ever and because we were a group they added 20% gratuity, so we had no say. They actually charged us for 3 kids meals because a little kid in our party said he wanted 6 pieces of chicken. So instead of consulting with a parent they automatically charged us for 3 meals! I'm from S. Boston, where Irish Pubs are run by Irish expats. This is no Irish pub! It's a chain where they'll price gauge you for the taste of salt and fat. Do yourself a favor, stay home, crack a beer and eat any packaged high sodium meal because it won't be any different from the crappy food you get here. If you stay home at least you won't have to pay for people to be rude to you.

We went 3/17/14 hoping for a great St. Patrick's Day meal and atmosphere. Big disappointment. The food was bland and the corned beef sparingly rationed in the dishes. We were not allowed to enter the establishment to wait for a table, we had to stand outside to give our names. The manager said it was to control for alcohol. WTF does making customers wait outside at 5 pm when there is room inside have to do with alcohol? Go anywhere else.

Really good place to stop. I didn't eat while there but others looked to be enjoying their food. What brought us in was there really good selection of beer; many from Utah. The bartender Paul and the others that we interacted with were are very knowledgable on the selections. Nice place to hang out. Sadly they only serve until 10:00, so keep an eye on the clock. Bonus for having shuffleboard - and it is free!

  • Leland S.

I've been here 3 times and the food is good but some of the portions seem small for the price. Guinness is always good, but it seems like the pint glasses are getting smaller. All 3 times it has had a constant smell of fish. I know they serve several seafood items on the menu, but the smell is very off putting. I was always taught that if your seafood has a strong smell then it's not fresh. So I don't order their seafood items.

Great selection of beers on tap, local and otherwise. I was pleasantly surprised with the food: braised lamb shank was delicious and the bison short ribs even better. Friendly staff who know their beer. If you are staying at the Ben Lomond, you can't miss by spending an evening here.

This was not my first visit to MacCools and it will not be my last. They have a good selection of very good craft beers. Their Irish fare is very good. Last night I had the Buffalo Shepherd's Pie. It was excellent. Only down side was it was a little small but still worth the $$. Good atmosphere as well.

  • Erin K.

Meal was better this time around. I had the salmon with BBQ sauce and sweet potato fries with the curry dipping sauce other reviewers recommended. Both were great. Last time I had the turkey burger, which was bland. Sat at the bar and the staff was really fun and helpful. If you're staying at the Ben Lomond hotel that's the same building, you can get a flier at the front desk for a free appetizer here. Beer, decent wine and (limited) full bar.

  • Anna C.

The lamb riblets are the main reason I go here, a little pricey but sooo good! Also Tuesdays are half off appetizers, so you can try three or four appetizers instead of getting an entree for a good price. I recommend the sweet potato fries, the lamb quesadilla, and the gravlox. They also have a rotating handle that offers a different $3 pint of beer each month.

What a delight! After a long day of driving my friends and I needed some decent grub that wouldn't weigh us down. This place met all our needs and more. Excellent beer menu, tons of fresh dinner options and some traditional fare. The BBQ salmon was perfectly cooked and my husband absolutely loved the buffalo shepherds pie. My sister had the Philly cheesesteak egg rolls and loved them - she lives in Philly and said they were spot on. Service was perfect, chef accommodating for special needs and in general this dinner made our night.

My husband and I ate here for the first time tonight. Great atmosphere, but the food was disappointing. We ordered the mussels and Finn skins as our appetizers. Can't go wrong with half price appetizers on Tuesdays (or can we?!?). The mussels seemed microwaved because it was cold in some areas and blazing hot in other areas of the plate. I'm glad the Finn skins weren't overly greasy, but it was cold like it was just sitting around waiting to make it out to our table. It took us 45 minutes to get our appetizers. I love corned beef and cabbage but it was way too salty. If I wasn't driving then I would've needed a few pints of beer to wash down my food. My husband ordered fish and chips. It wasn't hot and it was super soggy. Super disappointing food and service (especially since the restaurant wasn't busy). It's like they forgot about us. Overall, not a very good experience. We won't be going back anytime soon unless we just want a drink.

McCool's is also participating in restaurant week. A friend and I went to check it out. He ended up ordering their mussels, a pork special with port reduction and the plum pudding. I started with pretzels and bangers and mash. Some of their meat is sourced locally and responsibly and they are good about identifying those menu items for you. The mussels were ok, nothing awesome. My dinner mate really liked the pork and I really liked the sausages from Idaho. Nice dinner, good service.

Lamb riblets are excellent and on the menu as an appetizer, you gotta try 'em. I had 2 meals during my visit to Ogden. Fried Egg BLT for lunch was great. The avocado, bacon and fried egg made for a good sandwich. I'd probably ask for the egg to be over medium if I ordered again. For dinner on another night, I tried the portobello mushroom sandwich. The spinach and roasted red pepper made this sandwich really tasty!

A large group of us were staying in the attached hotel. This was an OK place to hang out after dinner. We ate dinner here one night and it was decent. Their pot pie (what I had) was really odd. It was like a can of soup with a GIANT puff pastry on top. It was almost too cumbersome to eat.

I am a big fan of MacCool's. Having grown up in Chicago, the Irish pub is a staple from my childhood. I spent many a night with friends enjoying Irish music and food. However, Ogden and most of Northern Utah had few viable options. I used to take the trek down to Foothill and was pleased when they opened the Layton location. However, with Ogden you get the real feel of an Irish pub. Located in the Historic Ben Lomond Hotel, MacCool's has the feel of classic American Irish pubs. The warm atmosphere, plethora of televisions, shuffleboard and excellent bar make it a great spot for a drink after work. MacCool's also has wonderful food. I am also a fan of the lamb riblets and I really enjoy their tradiitional Irish fare. This is definitely a great place!

When in doubt of what to eat, my husband and I usually settle on macools. It's at home comfort food with high scale. Few places in the area that i can't say I cook better then. I love the chicken pot pie and there lamb appetizer. It's a English pub style not a bar. Try it out.

I am not sure why there are bad reviews about this place. My wife and I went and had a very pleasant experience. She had the Shepard's pie and I had the Buffalo Shepard's pie. Both were excellent. We had sides of sweet potato fries and green beans. I'm not a sweet potato person but actually ate a few and didn't dislike them. The green beans were on point. I had three pints of Guinness and they were delicious, but I'm biased about my favorite beer. The only thing I disliked was the cost of the drafts, but to see the clover in the foam is nice. Haven't seen that since Ireland. Great restaurant from food, service and atmosphere.

Have only been to maccools for lunch and its usually pretty good! Its a cool atmosphere, and on the quiet side at lunch time. The food is a little inconsistent- I've had delicious sandwiches here and some that were meh. The sweet potato fries are a must- they have a curry mustard you can get with them that is amazing. Seriously, so good. Service has always been quick and helpful from what I've experienced.

The service was good and the food was good. But it was loud so I wouldn't recommend unless you are looking for a bar atmosphere.

  • Portia M.

There are simply too many other better places in Historic Ogden to go to this one outside of St Patricks Day. Another menu that SOUNDS good but in reality is meh. Irish food and pub food have been elevated to gourmet and farm-fresh, all small plates, local cheeses and value-conscious so I've grown impatient with mediocre grub. I was non-plussed by the atmosphere and layout of the bar as well. The main doors are closed with a sign directing you to enter through the Ben Lomond Hotel but there is no one at the back door entrance so guests wander in and then wander around confused until they go around the corner and the bartender sees them. This happened to us and everyone else who walked in after us. My group all wondered why the entrance was unmanned. Some details of the few times I have been here - ordered half sweet potato/ regular fries which were cold. Second albeight hot batch contained about 6 sweet potato fries which were delicious but the russets were not that great so we felt a little punished for daring to complain.

The food was decent, however the owner and staff were NOT! We went there because my husbands coworkers recommended it. Was our first meal in a new state, we ordered and waited quite a while for our food. As I was eating I noticed a hair at the bottom of my food. I sent it back, and a man came over to accuse me of placing the hair on my plate. He then called my daughter weird and cornered my husband to find out 'what had upset' me so much. I got home to call the owner and explain what had happened at his restaurant. It turns out the 'manager' that accused me WAS THE OWNER! We will NEVER be back there. I have never been treated so horribly. Can't believe this place is still in business if that is how they treat customers!!!

They have shuffleboard And they serve Guinness. GUINNESS! Oh, and LAMB RIBLETS!

  • Mikaela S.

I have been to MacCools several times and every time I am treated like a regular. They smile, are happy to see me and the service is quick. My first meal was on a Tuesday when i discovered that appetizers are half price...half price people! Of course I ordered lamb ribs which are usually $12.99.Let me tell ya, lamb ribs are amazing! They were sweet with a tiny bit of spice and oh so messy and good. The Lamb meat was perfectly tender and came right off the bone. I admit I am an appetizer queen. Every time we have gone it has been when we wanted a quick bite so I have yet to try a whole meal. But, luckily for me their appetizers are nothing short of delicious. A couple are my faves (besides lamb ribs mmm) are the Finn skins and sweet potato fries. Finn skins are sliced potatoes topped with cheese, green onions, bacon and served with a green onion and sour cream dip. Two words describe this dish- food coma. The sweet potatoe fries are your every day are your run of the mill fries but they are served with a yummy curry dip. On my last visit I ventured off the appetizer menu and splurged on some fish and chips. It was a bit pricey for only 3 small pieces of fish but they were still very good. The tartar sauce was super fresh and the chips were nice and crisp (perhaps a bit too crisp for my taste). I only wish there was one or two more piece of fish to make it worth the $13. If you stop by MacCools you must try some brew! They are great about picking out the right beer for your meal and they have plenty to choose from. I am not much of a beer drinker but every time I drank a recommended brew I was quite happy with it.

Loved it. We had the pot pie, lamb ribs, salmon chowder, blue cheese bacon burger. All great. Our waiter knew everything about the beer selection too, creating excellent pairings.

I love McCools! Just love, love, love this wonderful place! My wife and I discovered it over a year ago and both the food and service were stupendous, as well as reasonably-priced. Not only that but the atmosphere was just our style. A friendly, quaint but open and comfortable feel. Since then we've been back many times and we get nothing but the best service and food every single time. My wife loves their salads (good sized with several options for all tastes) and mussels, and we both love their sweet potato fries and ESPECIALLY LOVE THE SALMON BOXTY! It's a potato pancake with salmon, veggies and a delicious sauce. I know it sounds unusual but TRUST ME. Just go there today and GET ONE! It's the best thing ever. One of my all time favorite dishes anywhere. Quick story as a side note: a year ago we were planning our rehearsal dinner for our wedding and had an awful experience trying to work something out at a different local restaurant I won't mention here...thankfully McCool's saved the day! The very day that we contacted them, the owners met with us, helped us plan our rehearsal dinner and made us feel very confident in them. Before the big day they helped us set up a special menu and even printed up special menus just for our event and made sure we had our own separate area and good servers on duty. They were so kind and helpful every step of the way and really made us AND our families feel welcome and well taken care of. Ever since then, we are raving fans! The staff at McCool's make you feel like you're close friends or family while staying professional and not being overbearing. My only complaint is that I can't go there more often. :) Oh by the way, they also have really good brunch options Sat and Sun. The eggs benedict are perfectly poached. Try it out. Go to McCools today!

  • Nate S.

Never did I imagine MacCool's to be a source of great food, but as you can see from my initial review, I was wildly excited to have a new pub offering in the Og. Roosters continues to disappoint, and now MacCool's seems to be fading in that direction. My previous review had 1-star inflation due to shuffleboard. This update is probably still inflated to the same degree... Listen (and really, I hope the owners are listening), visiting MacCool's is like visiting a dying--and not particularly beloved--uncle. For whatever reason, there seems to have been little or no publicity effort in support of the new Ogden location. You're even likely to miss it just walking past because of the paltry signage. I'm not sure what the strategy is, but on the three or four times I've dined there, the number of idle wait staff exceeded the number of patrons. This contributes to disquieting feelings of desperation and uncertainty about how much food might be languishing in the pantry (and for how long). I will say that the staff has always been very pleasant, but the standard greeting of "Sit anywhere you like, you're the only one coming in today!!!" is really awkward. The interior space of this location is really quite nice. Reasonably bright with different zones for "bar," "sports," and "sittin' pub." They have created, however, one of the most deadly and difficult entrances ever. The railings are obstacles, the stairs have little tripper additions, and there's a lamp post threatening to bonk you into Narnia. So, naturally, that's where the specials board also lives. But hey, all minor shortcomings can be overcome by good food, right? Well, my greatest fondness for MacCool's stems from their commitment to quality ingredients, especially ethically sourced meats. So when I had the Niman Ranch bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich this morning and it tasted like two-day-old Hormel, my heart sank. THEN, I sampled the brunch pie, an unholy conglomeration of cheese, eggs, potatoes, onions, peppers, and goop that went straight past the heart and into the bowels. Nothing short of vile. This was an all-time low, but I have had some tasty food at this location ... I think. It will be some time before (or if) I return. Maybe come winter the Ben Lomond Hotel will fill up and MacCool's will come alive. Until then, Uncle Mac lingers, subsisting on nursing home food and looking increasingly terminal.

  • Jessica M.

I've always thought MacCool's food was nothing too fabulous, based on their Layton location. I had the corned beef and cabbage boxty on my latest visit, and I'm just not sure the boxty is my thing. But, I do think that it should be noted that the Ogden location is seriously beautiful compared to what it was. I frequented that space a few times over the last couple of years when it was the bar Rumors, and they sure classed up that dump. I couldn't believe I was in the same building. So, overall, their food did nothing more to wow me than it did in Layton, but the atmosphere is really nice.

I just found this place because friend said it was great. They were right! We went there for lunch and it was a bit crowded so the service was kinda slow. But the food was outstanding. It's a bit pricy but based on my first experience - worth it.

  • Kelly J.

One of my favorites in Utah, even more so now that the wall is down! They serve everything from comfort food to amazing salads (17 in all). Over a 3 year period I have tried everything on the menu ( not all at this location) and I love it.

  • Rhiannon R.

I suspect that some of the Reviews for the Layton location belong here under the Ogden store. I only say that because I fell there is a difference with quality between the two. Layton is much busier and therefore I feel better prepared for a busy night and also the food gets turned around faster thusly keeping the food on your plate fresher. The review I am writing today is about my most recent visit to the Ogden location. We went on a Friday night and it was at about full, but this is the most people I have seen here out of the three times I've come. Our server was friendly but that's not all it takes to give great service! She was slow, she never checked back on our meals, and to me the most egregious offence was that she did not check back to see if we wanted another beer! The food was mediocre at best. I had the Irish Ruben with sweet potato fires and curry dipping sauce, my husband had the corned beef nod cabbage my kids ordered the kids burger. My Rubén was cold and the rye stale but the curry dipping sauce was really good! Hubby's corned beef was okay I suspect it comes pre seasoned so how can they go wrong... My biggest problem was the kids meals, I know they are only children but they have taste buds too! Their burgers were cold, dry, and came with absolutely nothing on them, no cheese, no ketchup or pickles, nothing!! We asked a random server for some condiments as our server never came back to check on us. I really really love Irish food, it makes me so sad that we don't have a decent Irish pub around here..

This place is growing on me. I think I'll be back, but I have yet to experience a WOW moment. Their shepherds pie is off the hook. Their spicy fries and sauce are yum. The set up is pretty cool. The location is great. I wish their menu was a little more extensive, but I like it.

    (3)
  • Roy C.

I have eaten here a few times and the best thing is not even Irish, it's the seared ahi tuna salad. Unfortunately, like everything else there the quality and taste is highly inconsistent even the salad.

  • Jenny S.

I love MacCool's! The staff is so friendly, always making me feel welcome. I love the atmosphere and the food. And the beer! ;D I have only been disappointed once in my experience there, and that was just me not liking a dish. The curry Boxty, not the most amazing thing in the world. But everything else there is simply fantastic! Go in any Tuesday for half price appetizers! I get some sweet potato fries & a Newcastle or a Tetley. Perfect!

Finally, I can get a beer without something to eat,,beautiful bar, great atmosphere. Stipped in for a beer and the Yankees/Boston..nope not available. The beer was flat and at $10 for a small glass...I don't think sooo, I'n not be back.

We ate breakfast here two days in a row and it was fantastic. The eggs benedict and the frittata are both very good. The service was a bit slow but I think they are still working things out since they just recently opened. The staff was very friendly and accommodating otherwise.

They have done a nice job installing this restaurant in the historic old Ben Lomond Hotel and the ambience seems rather relaxed and the service good. The red trout was very good and tasty, the shepherd's pie was uninspiring, and the lamb shank was disappointing. It tasted excellent and the grilled potatoes were very enjoyable but ONE shank doea not a meal make ! To my mind the menu is way over-priced.

    (3)
  • Ian M.

Fantastic food and service. It was better than I could have expected. I got the Shepherd's Pie, and I added scrambled eggs on top (it was brunch time). It was some of the best food I've had in my life. The mashed potatoes were a perfect consistency, the roast beef was tender and delicious, the gravy was the perfect texture and flavor, and the scrambled eggs managed to make the entire dish so much more than the sum of it's parts The truest test of a restaurant is when they can take a simple dish and make it amazing. The service was excellent, the atmosphere was homey and inviting, and the food is without peer. I will absolutely go back.

Went for a birthday celebration and was not disappointed! Meat was tender and the beer was spot on. Great atmosphere and the servers are friendly and keep up with conversation too. You get what you pay for and I can't wait to bring my guy here for his birthday dinner. Ace in the hole for sure!
