RAW CHICKEN IN KIDS MEAL I brought my daughter and her friend here over the weekend. My daughter's friend ordered the chicken tenders from the kids meal menu. When she bit into one, she told me that something was wrong. Upon inspection, I was totally disturbed to find that it was COMPLETELY RAW inside- not just pink, but UNCOOKED. We were not offered any kind of a refund or discount on our meal. Just a smile and a "whoops!" Also, There is no air conditioning, the juke boxes at the tables don't work, the fries are dry and mealy, and to top it all off, the food is not cheap. Drive by and take a photo from the outside if you must, but do not eat here!

Oh, yes. The Chicken Fried Steak is fantastic. The way it is suppose to be done. An actual Sirloin Steak pounded and breaded. The sad thing is I discovered from the owner that they are not going to carry that steak anymore cause people prefer the frozen stuff you can buy in bulk. Heathens! Have you never been to Texas? The only fault to this steak is it's size. It should be the size of the dinner plate, with enough gravy to float the steak. The diner itself is beautiful. Having been moved from Rhode Island, the rebuild took a while and is well done. The place is a well crafted step back in time. The owners are proud of it and will share a book that chronicles the whole thing. This place is a bit of a drive from my house, but with the quality of the food and the beauty of the diner my wife and I plan to make more trips out here. People! Please come and demand that they bring the Chicken Fried Steak back! It is worth it.

Meh at best. The food was completely sub-par. We went on Labor Day weekend and they may have been understaffed but it wasn't the initial wait that was the frustration. We had three different people wait on us. First, got the drinks. Second took the order. Third brought it out. Not one of them came back to check in once. We had to go to the counter for butter and syrup on an order of mostly pancakes. Needless to say, service is about 1 star. Location and atmosphere gets it 3-4 stars. Food was a solid 1-2 stars. The omelette was a mixture of grey and toasted brown. The worst appearance I could imagine for an omelette. It was so so in taste too. But the cost was $12 on a very limited menu. All of the 5 pancakes we had were crunchy and over cooked. The top half separated from the bottom half. $8 for 3. Not worth it. Even after 20 minute wait, food came out like warm. And that was after the brunch rush. I love Oakley and want to like this Diner but they have let me down too many times at this point. Maybe I'll forget this experience in a year but probably not.

The atmosphere was the same kind of diner I grew up going to in Holyoke, Mass. The food was awesome too. Nothing out of can kind of food! The hash was all homemade. My husbands chicken fried steak was a real steak....not cubed steak either. He loved it. The owner even came out to say Hi and talk about the diner; very personable. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. We drove for an hour to get here and will come back!!

I went here with the wife on a Sunday drive. A 74 year old diners got me beat. Great selection of music on the jukebox at each table. I got the prime rib sandwich, it's Sunday dinner ain't it, and she got Mac n cheese. Get the salad instead of the fries. They were out of pie so we'll have to go back.

The food was decent, the bacon alone earned the extra star. But, I'll never be back! The wait to be seated was long (it was a holiday weekend) the wait for our food even longer! When it did arrive it was dropped off quickly and no one seemed to notice that they forgot both the butter and syrup for our pancakes! I had to get up and go find some myself. I understand a busy weekend but there was no friendly service or apologies to make up for it. The two waitresses were both super unfriendly. I felt bad for the owner who was trying to make up for it. But, just a horrible experience all around. And to top it off the food was ridiculously overpriced!

I'm not sure if I can say enough good things about the diner. We relocated to the area recently and we haven't been able to stay away. I have yet to have a bad meal after 5 visits. The hand cut French Fries are delicious. I HIGHLY recommend a brownie, and any of the home made ice cream flavors that are available. If you can, don't get a burger. The burgers are delicious but there are so many amazing things on the menu you shouldn't limit yourself!

Disappointed, we were pretty excited to try the place after seeing how cool it was from the outside. Its an authentic diner and seeing the restoration book was pretty neat. Sadly the food wasn't so good. We ordered 2 burgers and I got a pizza burger thinking it would e something different. The regular burgers were frozen cheap Sisco burgers, that weren't even seasoned well. We even asked them and after hesitating he told us indeed they were frozen burgers. They told us that's what people wanted! Wow they must be confused. The pizza burger I received was literally dripping grease and bland. It was such a shame, I sincerely hope they figure it out because they seemed like good folks. Just have to remember it starts with good food to put out good food.

After taking the kids for a trip on the Heber Creeper, we decided to keep with the theme and drive a little out of the way to get to the Road Island Diner. Four adults and three kids (6,8,&10) piled in to this little diner around 6:00 pm on a Saturday evening. We expected to have to wait, but it wasn't longer than 5 minutes before the staff graciously pulled two tables together to accommodate our party. During the wait we were seated at the bar, giving us plenty of opportunity to scout out the homemade baked goods. My husband had the Lama Dama Ding Dong burger which he said could only be improved with a touch of tzatziki sauce. I had chicken noodle soup, which tasted like my mom's (yay!) and the house rolls served with it were flavorful with an excellent texture. My stuffed chicken breast was just a touch on the dry side, but chicken is hard to get perfect. The stuffing was spinach, artichoke, and mushrooms. The flavors were delicious and the smashed red potatoes as a side were cooked perfectly. One kid had a burger which he loved picking his own toppings for, and the other had the homemade macaroni and cheese. She slicked it right up. The table top jukeboxes were fun, and the atmosphere was inviting. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable without hovering and we had a chance to visit with the owner as well. They were a delightful crew. On the way out we picked up some "magic bars" for the kids and we all sampled their chocolatey goodness. Sometime I'd like to go back and try an appetizer and the "adult" chocolate ice cream with my meal. All together a very pleasant experience!

Good homemade American style food. About what you would expect from a diner of this caliber. Definitely affordable

A charming building only goes so far. My wife and I traveled from Salt Lake City to Oakley this weekend to experience the Road Island Diner and we left very disappointed. The diner was busy (but not overly) for lunch on a Saturday, but when we arrived we were promptly seated at the counter. A waitress quickly came to take our order, but that was the last pleasant encounter we would have with any wait staff for the next 45 minutes. As we waited, our drinks were left empty, even as numerous wait staff walked right by us (we were at the counter, after all). Eventually, I caught a waitress's attention and asked for drink refills. After another 15 minutes of being completely ignored (and watching countless customers who had placed their orders after us finish their lunches), I again flagged down a waitress and asked when our order would be up. She told us she would find out. Five minutes later, she returned and said it should be right up. (It was obvious at this point that they had lost our ticket, but of course the staff did not take any responsibility--not even an apology for the excessive wait). After nearly ten more minutes, our two sandwiches arrived looking very sad and very cold. As my wife ate her subpar patty melt, she noticed that the beef was not cooked consistently and as she got to the second half of the sandwich, she took a bite of completely uncooked ground beef. Needless to say, she lost what was left of her appetite. I told the waitress about the problem and her response was, "Oh, sorry". We asked for the check and left. The Road Island Diner is a beautiful building, but that alone is not worth the drive to Oakley. The service is slow and indifferent and the food is mediocre at best.

I love the atmosphere. Not good for more than four people though. The service was not great. The girl messed up our order the guy who I think was the owner argued with me that we didn't order what we said we did. Then I think we were overcharged. THe food was mediocre I could cook better Mac and cheese and the portions so small. My side salad was probably the size of a teacup, Next while we were sitting after finishing our meal and chatting we were asked to leave!!! The guy said they needed the tables but half the restaurant was empty!! He just didn't want to open the other half and the place is sooooo small that i was just shocked at how rude this was!!! I'd never go back even if I was paid to.

Really liked the lamb sandwich, but it took an hour to get it and the fries were obviously ones that sat under a heat lamp for that hour. The chili tasted good, but I like my tomato chucks smaller and more meat would have rocked it. We may have caught a bad day and we suspect our order was lost, but no one gave us the courtesy of an update. At least they kept our drinks full.

We absolutely loved this place! Everything is made to order from scratch. They have unique menu items like watermelon jicama salad, pizza burger, and lamb sandwich. The food and service were impeccable. Atmosphere was really fun. We drove about an hour from Salt Lake to try it and we'll do it again soon.

We stopped here on a whim just to grab a couple milkshakes. We ended up deciding to share a meal and a shake. We were pleased with the meal, stuffed shells that were the special. It was slightly overpriced, but tasted great. The owner was there and heard we were sharing; she split our salad onto two plates. We thought that was very nice. Then we had our shared milkshake. It was delicious!! They brought us two straws and stopped by to make sure there was enough caramel. We will stop by again for sure! The service was great and they really made you feel welcome.

The building gets 4 stars, but over all this place was a disappointment. From the service to the food. The service was just ok the girl waiting on us checked on us only once while we waited over 30 minutes, didn't ask if we needed more drinks. Then finally the good came out and definitely not worth the price the food was just decent but honestly not good! Denny's! you could get better food at Denny's. And better service. I am glad I checked it out but I will not go back. Bummer!

Perfect experience all the way around. Start out with the nostalgia of eating in a fully restored dining car from 1937 complete with table-side juke boxes featuring Benny Goodman and the Beatles. Follow that up with prompt and friendly service from an expert staff that works together flawlessly. And I haven't even reached the best part yet: the food! Homemade silky smooth raspberry ice cream, fresh juicy burgers, and other baked delights made fresh daily on the premises. Yes, it is diner food, but diner food done right. Only open Thursday though Sunday and a bit of a drive off the beaten path, but well worth the effort. Definitely check it out.

Whatever you've read about the Road Island Diner before March 2014 - IGNORE! CROSS it out. DELETE! Why? It no longer applies. There are new owners who are actually two of Summit County's favored caterers. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING prior to that date pertains to Steve and Ginny's culinary acumen. If Yelp could start review for the Road Island Diner as of March 2014, you'd only see top stars! Although they've had a "soft" opening, Road Island Diner is indeed open for business - with a great new menu, curtesy of Kumbaya (and now Road Island Diner) owners, And, what's more, on a Friday night in little Oakley, this place was PACKED! Young dudes in the corner taking selfless. Moms and dads pleased that their pockets weren't pilfered by high prices. Multi-generational families. Retirees recalling days of youth. The locals KNOW that the new owners deliver quality and a reasonable price. And that's what you need to keep a restaurant going - quality. Add to that, an amazing "basement" space that is now the "speakeasy" of the area. Ryan Montbleau christened this underground music room with an amazing acoustic set to a select crowd of "by invitation only" fans. They've got something here, people. We are not talking about going to a show where the point of being an attendee is to socialize. This is a "listening room" for true music lovers and fans. WIll people drive that far to see a musician? YES! And as evidence, tickets were sold-out to invitees within hours. Fulfill a need. Do it well. Exceed expectations. Serve excellent food at a reasonable (locals) price. Great unique atmosphere. I would say that Road Island DIner is now a DESTINATION for multiple reasons: 1. great food 2. great unique atmosphere 3. great music Get in your car and make this your Sunday drive destination. But skip Mon-Wed as they are currently open only a few days a week.

Staff at our hotel told us sbout this fun diner snd I'm so glad that she did. It's a blast from the past! We were greeted immediately and a very friendly and energetic waitress, Connie, waited on us. I almost got a hamburger, but Connie steered me to a Reuben or the prime rib sandwich...so I go one and my husband got the other. I also traded out French fries for their fabulous macaroni and cheese for $2.50 extra ( well worth every penny). The owner checked on us to make sure everything was good-and it was! Fresh air coming through the windows made it feel like we were in the patio-so pleasant! Don't miss this little jewel if you are in the Park City area!

I thought this place was okay, I ordered a BLT which was pretty good, but unfortunately one of my companions couldn't say the same thing about their's and had to end up picking up food at another place. The restaurant is very cute, but slightly dirty and the jukeboxes on the tables are a fun thought, but ours didn't work and just ate up our coins. Okay staff, I didn't think our waiter was very friendly. Over all it was an subpar experience, don't know if I'd recommend it.

Fun environment. Cool exterior. Simple menu. Hamburger was kind of dry. Ceasar salad was yummy. Hay stack onion straws were not hot when they csme to the table, but still tasted good. Thought it was a bit strange when a guy came in and the staff refused to take his order because he wanted a hamburger "to go", they said its because they dont have to go containers, but when he asked if he could just wrap it in tinfoil they said thier kitchen doesn't cook food "to go"

Drove from SLC expecting a special Sunday breakfast, but what a disappointment. Slow service (which I could live with), but the food wasn't good at all. My grandson and I ordered pancakes with were almost black. My son ordered biscuits and gravy, which were okay, but not what he had experienced in the past. I kept my pancakes even though dry and dark, but we sent my grandson's back. They brought out two instead of three because there was one on his mom's plate, which was put on instead of a biscuit. Really, what restaurant does that?

My family and I just returned from here and I wish we would of just stayed in Park City. My daughter ordered the bacon cheeseburger med, but it came out well done. Supposedly, the fries were hand cut and not frozen, but they were limp and under seasoned. I just ordered a bowl of chili, and that's exactly what I got. No cheese, green onions or sour cream. The food took FOREVER and the service was just as slow. I do not recommend doing here if your enjoy good food. Tip: twice frying your fries will insure a crisp exterior and a creamy interior.

This is such a fun stop. It feels like an old fashioned diner. The food is pretty good. It's not a gourmet kitchen by any stretch but great diner food. The Mac and cheese is homemade and the kids loved it. My husband was very happy with a burger and fries and I thoroughly enjoyed my hot chocolate. The staff was very friendly and we had a great experience overall. We will be back.

I was a bit apprehensive after reading some of the negative reviews, but my experience was nothing but great. The prices were a bit above average, but the portion sizes were large. I uploaded a photo of my chicken fried steak and eggs breakfast, which was huge and worth every penny. The waitress was prompt, friendly, and brought three tabasco flavors. The diner was clean and did not smell, like others said. I will be back. Also, the hours are incorrect on here: they are now open 7 days a week.

Brand new owner, Brand new food! It was so good. I was so pleased with the service with the owner, and the food. As a park city local, I had sworn off this place because of the bad service and even worse food. But, I saw the sign saying new ownership.....and I am so glad I tried it. We don't have very many restraints in the area, and it's so nice to have a great place close now. Perfect for after exploring the canyon snowmobiling or hiking! Give it a try again! Everything is from scratch. Stellar!

Welcome back to 1955, everyone! The brilliantly-named Road Island Diner is housed inside a custom-made railcar that looks right at home in its Oakley corner spot. You wouldn't know that it wasn't an old repurposed railcar. It looks pretty dang legit, inside and out. They give you their history on the back of the menu, and there are many bona-fide looking pieces of memorabilia, decor, and equipment throughout. Well done nostalgia. A few focal points - - Fully operable mini juke boxes with authentic music - A bakery case with beautiful pies and other baked treats awaiting your adoption and screaming out "Aunt Bee spent all day baking us!" - Plenty of polished stainless and shiny red tuck-n-roll throughout We were greeted by Petey, in his white soda jerk shirt and hat, who turned out to be the highlight of the visit. Not sure how they got the moniker "jerk," because he was great. We asked about their homemade rootbeer, and he gave us a glass of it to try while we were waiting for our food. It was rooty-tooty-tasty! (Oh, yes I did.) Their menu features a nice variety of typical diner food, with an emphasis on BBQ; primarily meats and sandwiches. We decided on easily transportable to-go food so we could eat it while basking in the beauty of the nearby canyon. Our party of four decided on the Pulled Pork Sandwich, the Brisket Tips, the Club Sandwich, and the BBQ Brisket Sandwich. All came with really good BBQ sauce, and a side - like their homemade potato chips which we were pretty stoked about trying after seeing other Yelps. However, once we got to our picnic destination, we were dismayed to discover that they had neglected to include them, so we didn't even get to try the famous potato chips. Sad. The other sides we tried were the baked beans (okay, but nothing Jay Bush and Duke will be threatened by) and pretty good mashed potatoes & gravy. The brisket tips and sandwich were tasty, if a tad dry. However, both this and the pulled pork sandwiches came on buns which had been grilled and left for dead, evidently. The bottom buns were so solid, one chanced breaking a tooth. The Club was very standard, not significantly different, and no better tasting than Village Inn's club. A big gripe was the accompanying abundance of grease with all meals except the Club. We were nervous about bears sniffing us out courtesy of the grease, so, quick like bunnies we slid back down the canyon. (Note to Management - include many wet naps with the to-go meals.) The food here is not terribly expensive, but also not cheap for the quality we found. We spent $28 (including a small tip for Petey!) for our two of the four sandwiches and sodas. The breakfast menu looked really good. There's a chance we could be lured back to try it. The take-away was that the Road Island Diner is better when you're just looking at it. We found the food unremarkable in every way. It's the trip back to the 50's that's truly worth the price.

Two for effort, that's it. TOO HOT, inexperienced staff, shakes in an oversized water glass and the smell, all grease, the hot smell of grease, zero ventilation, sticky

Should be two, but I moved this up to a three as it is an actual diner! Asked for root beer but they couldn't accommodate as their ice cream was too hard. Wife ordered macaroni and cheese. Right out of the Kraft box. What a shame.

If you like history and would like to recall eating in a diner during your youthful days, then a stop at the Road Island Diner in Oakley, Utah might just be "your thing". If you are going for a five star gourmet meal then you are more than likely at the wrong place. We stopped by on a Sunday---in the winter they are open only Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We arrived just before noon and found just half the seating open however that quickly changed as within a few minutes the whole place was just about full. Ordered the hamburger and opinion rings and both were excellent. The interior has been restored to its original and is very nice. Service was good and the waitress friendly. There is a limited menu. You can sit at a booth or at one of the many stools along the counter. If in this area a stop here will bring back many memories. A history of the diner is printed on the menu, a copy of which they will give you as a souvenir.

We went to the Road Island Diner while passing through town on a motorcycle trip. We were impressed by some of the unique dishes like smoked salmon sandwiches on the menu. I had a cheeseburger and my friends had the salmon sandwiches. Everyone was pretty happy with our food. The service was better than average, our server was nice and chatty. My only complaint would be that there was loud fifties music playing. I was born in 1970 and am not nostalgic for something I've never known. If they were to update their playlist a little I might go back.

Welcome back to the forties! Great food and ambience. This diner was formerly in Rhode Island, trailered out west, and restored like new. The waiter let us look through the book of the restoration, which was interesting. Unlike one former Yelper, I appreciate the name of this diner!

First day open under new Chef/ownership and the food was wonderful!! Pizza burger was amazing and the fresh cut French fries were delicious!! My husband had the steak sandwich and it was tasty. Prices were very reasonable and service was great!! Very friendly new owners and waitress!! On my way out the door I ate a homemade oatmeal, white chocolate chip cookie, Yum!!! I would highly recommend it, can't wait to go back!!

For one: I always judge things with names spelled differently quite negatively. There is nothing cute about changing the spelling of something to make it your own. Not only that, but this "establishment" is not even located in "Rhode Island" Even "You-taah" would be a more suitable name for this place. Now, For anyone considering experiencing all the "Road Island" Diner has to offer, I Have composed a little list of when to run away from the thought of dining at this wretched establishment. 1) If you are not Caucasian 2) If you have an acquired taste for quality foods 3) If you have not set aside a day to wait for food 4) If you have taste buds 5) If you have a working nose and smell senses My family and I have eaten at the Diner once before in 2009, where we only bought the "Blue Cheese Chips" and decided we would try to visit it again. Two years later, the experience was so horrendous that we would never again in our lives consider going to-or recommend visiting this poverty-struck cable car disguised as a restaurant in this hick town ever again. Nothing but motorcycles and Ford Trucks occupied the parking lot upon our second arrival. That should have been our cue to turn away, but having no food in our systems got the best of us and we decided to try and dine here again. We walked in to a very unfriendly waitress who told us to sit down and wait for a table. The place was half-full, with many tables open, Why were we waiting? During our wait for one of the many open tables, my family and I looked around at all of the people around us. My father is just about the whitest person in Utah, and my mother is a beautiful mix of stunning and breathtaking. AKA: South American. We noticed that everyone in this Cable Car had on white-supremist attire, proudly displayed their confederate flags, and looked at us like they were about to send the KKK out. I was unphased by these stares, as envy is the root of all hatred. We were sat down in a crammed booth right by the windows: however, we couldn't even SIT at the actual booth because there was a stench so vile and foul it sent me almost running to the gritty bathrooms in the back. I kid you not, it was the most disgusting thing I have ever smelt in my life. We instantly moved over to the next vacant booth next to us. The waiter came by and wiped our table down, and then we realized that it was the RAG he was using to CLEAN THE TABLES that omitted the atrocious smell. Our waiter was bizarre, to say the least. As I could describe him: one half bath short of a townhome, with his moronic jokes and side remarks. We ordered instantly and he said he would be right back with our food... My mother looks up at the window where the food goes from the kitchen to the waiters, not 5 minutes later after we had place our order of blue cheese chips and Briscuit tips-both appetizers. Both of our appetizers were sitting there underneath the heat lamp. We waited and waited for someone to deliver our food, but nothing. 20 minutes passes and our waiter walks by to tell us that "our food will be out shortly" uh.. no. IT HAS BEEN OUT FOR A WHILE. We watched our food be pushed away from the heat lamps, and have nasty armpits reach over our food for someone elses. The place already smelled horrible: and now I'm starting to believe the waiters didn't help the stench cause either. Twenty minutes after our waiter told us our food would be here shortly and STILL nothing. We couldn't even flag down a waiter to help us with our food troubles. There were not that many people to be understandably busy, this was a careless act of ignorant waitressing. Completely fed up with waiting, we finally left. My father called once we got in the car and spoke to someone who "claimed" to be the manager, who agreed that the service was bad,.. and that was it. No apology or anything else. We drove a little ways over to some Swiss-inspired resort happy hour that had far better food and service than the "road island" place could ever provide. Coming from California, I can promise you that I will never step foot in this under classed, hick town, white supremist, poor excuse for a place ever again in my life. My advice is: if you want a diner: visit Denny's. For it is far better than this absolute nonsensical place.

We were camping at Smith-Morehouse campground and decided to drop in here for a snack. What a fun experience, we can enthusiastically recommend it. They smoke all their own meats (brisket, chicken, ribs, salmon) and it made the quesadilla appetizer we got fantastic. Service was friendly, prompt, attentive, but not hovering. Looking forward to coming for a full meal.

I'm from the east coast and have eaten in many many old diners up and down the coast. Having moved to the west, I like the idea of an old classic restored diner out here in the middle of nowhere. It is unfortunate then that the idea did not match execution. You can import an authentic diner, but you can't import the food and cooking style as well. The food must be local and the cooking must be taught. Based on this visit, someone needs a lesson! We had come too late for breakfast proper so I had the breakfast egg sandwich on a muffin with swiss cheese. The egg was very nicely cooked with the cheese sandwiched between two layers and very tasty. The ground sausage was smooshed into a patty. It came with french fries which were very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and they were great! The problem however was with the English muffin. It was plain, was not toasted or grilled at all. It's a diner tradition to "toast" the bread/muffin on the grill with butter or grease or something. How could this have been overlooked?! This completely ruined it for me! Even McDonalds toasts the English muffin!! Given the service was so slow and at that point I was so hungry, rather than ask for a grilled muffin, I ate it anyway. Speaking of the service, yes it was very slow and disorganized. The waitress was little help in understanding the menu. As I said while I like the idea of the diner and the nostalgia of it, in this case execution was flawed and I was reminded once again of other authentic aspects. Like when it's full, you will wait crammed into a little space by the door and if it's really full you'll wait in line on the steps outside! Very authentic as part of the diner experience! Kudos for that! I don't think we'll be going back. Not that it will matter to them anyway, they seem to have plenty of business.

Two for the atmosphere and decent food. However as others have noted, the service is attrocious! If there are more than 3 cars in the lot, take a pic of the exterior as you drive by.

Service was horrible. The waitresses were incredibly rude to the customers, even a cute older couple. Food was alright but not worth the harassment.

I had the meatloaf sandwich, and it was good. Came on thick toast with grilled onions, pickles on the side. Grilled onions and pickles are all that really should top a meatloaf sandwich, so I was happy with that. It wasn't the best I've ever had, but pretty dang good. Service was fine. There were two other diners (I was there on a weekday in the early afternoon) so it probably could have been better, but whatever. I don't typically take off points for poor service (to be clear, this was NOT poor service), but better service can add points. To me a 3 star review is not at all bad, and I think this place couldn't definitely do better. I'd go again if ever in the area. Well, I never am, but it's a nice day trip.

If your travels ever take you through Oakley, UT, you MUST stop at this amazing, perfectly restored vintage diner. It's quite possibly worth a trip here just for the ambiance and food - a perfect Sunday drive with the family. I had the brisket Philly Cheese Steak and although I thought it could have used a bit more gooey cheese, it was just excellent. Tasty meat, grilled peppers and onions on a toasted hoagie bun. It came with a side of delicious mac and cheese that was clearly homemade and very flavorful - perfect comfort food. My friend had a heaping plate of sliced turkey with a savory homemade gravy that made my mouth water and some of the BEST BBQ beans I have ever had. They were so good, I'm thinking about writing to the owner for the recipe. (Apparently, diner owner Keith Walker created the recipe himself and they are truly outstanding. My father was a bean afficionado and I know my beans, so I say, "Bravo, Mr. Walker!") We washed it all down with old fashioned root beer and the refills were endless - and free. For dessert, we polished off a giant slice of freshly made coconut cream pie covered in fresh whipped cream. It was the creamiest, tastiest, yummiest I have ever had. It was perfectly custardy, with just the right amount of sweet, flavorful coconut in every bite and a fantastic crumbly crust. Marie Callender, eat your heart out! Despite the fact that the place was crammed and that people were flooding in the door, the service was excellent. Our server was fast, friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend the Road Island Diner and will definitely make it back there on my next visit to Oakley. I'm hoping to see it featured one day soon on celeb chef Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive Ins and Dives!" You don't wanna miss this place!

Used to be great but the chef left and now is terrible. he went to Yolk and that is very good. What a pity because the physical plant is amazing and how hard is it to cook dinner food. I don't get it.

Ok. Lets start with the only reason this place got 2 stars. The service staff. I'm not sure of their names, but they were totally rad. They were super friendly, appropriatley chatty, informative, and quite polite. +2 stars for them! Next, lets move to the decor. I am not a fan of kitchy, themed places. As far at this diner goes, it's lacking. They are all about their history here. There are signs everywhere saying please respect our history and don't put your feet on the bench and such. Quite tacky there. If someone puts their feet on the booth benth politely ask them to put their feet down. They say that it has been restored to its original state aside from the booth jukeboxes and flat screen tv's. Why add the tacky Johnny Rockets music boxes and flat screen tv's if it's integrity is so important! Uber fail there. Lastly, the food. DO NOT EAT HERE! Ok. Now that I got that out of the way, don't eat here. Sure their milkshakes may be grand, but I ordered a burger and wings. I assumed it's pretty hard to mess up these two things. Oh how wrong can I be. The burger was underdone, yet dry, and the wings. Gross. They were completly dry, no flavor, small, and overpriced. The wedges were hit or miss. Some were good, some were hard to swallow. My water was good though. :) All in all. If you like terrible food, cheesy decor, and great service, this is the place for you. Go elsewhere. You won't regret it. :)

The service was slow. Food was slightly disappointing. The homemade potato chips and restored diner car are worth the trip though.

Stumbled on this box car diner by accident on our way back from Wanship because the Spring Chicken Inn was closed (indefinitely- so sad!). The meatloaf sandwich was thick and juicy, served on mile high texas toast. The chili used real pulled pork, no ground up stuff and the baked mac and cheese was lovely. Service could have been better, but then again there was only one waitress and one busboy with the cutest paper hat right out of the 50's. Skip the cherry pie and go for the ice cream sundaes, everyone else did.

We've been here twice now. If they are not busy the food and service are great. But when it gets busy they seem to struggle. Philly was pretty good, as were the burgers. But if the lot's full, keep driving or plan to spend a couple hours with slow service.

Great Philly cheese steak and pulled pork sandwich. I was skeptical coming here because of reviews but the service was great and the food was wonderful. A great little find.

This 1940s fully refurbished diner is one of a kind in the West. The atmosphere is killer. Food is American ecclectic, comfort food you would expect of a diner. Desserts are handmade and many of the dishes are quite good. Service is generally good but the place can get slammed during the weekends and summer months. This place has been featured in many calenders and many clubs make the journey to dine there, step inside and you will see why. This is a destination type place to eat!

I have a second home in Oakley, so have eaten here quite a few times. It was to our great lament that it changed owners a couple of years ago. The food used to be unbelievably tasty, way better than your typical diner food. All of a sudden, one time we went there the menu had changed and the food was way WORSE than diner food. I ordered a salad that was supposed to have sirloin strips on top- instead of sirloin, there were strips of gristly fat, I am not exaggerating. I asked the waitress and she said, "Sorry, we were out of sirloin." Well that might have been some useful information before I ordered! We did try it a couple more times, disappointed each time, so decided we were done with this place. But one night we had an hour drive to make and we were so sleepy, so I stopped in just for 2 cups of to-go coffee. She came back with coffees and asked if I needed cream. She brought out cream that when I poured it, it formed chunks in the coffee. I was too desperate and too nice to say anything.. and then she rang me up and said "That will be six thirty." I said " Six... DOLLARS?" Holy cow! So, the Road Island diner charges twice as much as Starbucks!! I shelled out the money and then the next day came down with the worst food poisoning I have ever had. I was extremely sick for 3 days, all because of that curdled milk. It makes me cringe even driving by there any more. There are so many great restaurants around- the Yolk In Kamas is good, and a quick drive to Park City opens up worlds of eating opportunities. Don't fall for the whole "train car" thing at the diner- it's not worth it!!

They've done a very nice job restoring this old train into a 1940's Diner, I'd be giving a marvelous review if it were a museum, it's not. The consistency of the food in quantity and quality became an issue. The double patty elk burger (served that way for months) became a single patty, as well as lacked flavor. The change in portion size was very noticeable when we ordered their rendition of the "Big Mac", in the beginning it was difficult to get your mouth around. It's been a big disappointment to come in for Breakfast only to find out they're out of eggs & anything made with them, obviously a number of items. Unfortunately, they don't offer a large menu, something I would expect from a diner, there's is rather small. The service is marginal at best and at times horrible. I was particularly turned off with the 23 flies we counted buzzing around the window by our table, they did take notice, for the next week they had a number of "sticky hanging fly traps" hanging from the ceiling over tables. Truly have never seen that one. Limited space makes it impossible for large groups, even 6 are difficult to accommodate. For lack of dining options in the area, we continued to patronage, no longer is it worth the high prices, poor food quality and rude service. Do yourself a favor, head to Kamas and have a Fabulous meal at The Gateway Grill.

The Road Island Diner was a neat little "throwback" diner plucked from mid-century America. We had a basic, greasy spoon meal, good service, and warm hot chocolate. After a long day at the snow mobile ranch, it was nice to have a comfortable seat in a cozy diner to relax in.

I'll post this as a starting point for others to expand on. We think we may have hit them on a night they attempted something they shouldn't have and that perhaps they are better than our experience suggests. We found this place mostly by accident and just the look of it, the nostalgia, was enough to draw us in. It's authentic for sure with a few modern touches that don't intrude on the overall effect. It's a great place to hang with your s.o. and pretend you're back in the day. We were fortunate to get a booth, ten minutes later the place was packed. I'm betting this place picks up it's share of transient travelers who just have to stop in and get a look at the inside. What about the food? Well here's where it gets sketchy. It was "Mexican nite" according to the sign out front- and we opted for the nights "special" oops- bad idea. I think it was an enchilada, possibly chicken? With a dollop (smaller than a tad) of mystery sauce, that emphasized the dryness of this dish. I'm pretty sure the crusty re-fried beans were a hold over from the previous week. The accompanying salsa was watery and bland. Service? We got a kid with other things on his mind, like getting the hell out of there in time to get his weekend started. It really pissed him off when my wife asked for a glass of water after he served our entre', (he was already half way out the door) but he shlepped behind the counter and brought it to her, then disappeared. From the menu it would appear this diner has more traditional offerings and from comments we've heard these are done much better than this special. We will go back, maybe order a breakfast, or a milkshake, burger, fries? Whatever-- just not "Betty's Mexican Special". We're really hoping the second time's a charm because this could become our favorite secret spot, if only the food measures up to the atmosphere.
