My experience at the Gristmill Inn was absolutely wonderful. We were given room 2, and it was perfect! Very comfortable bed and stunning decor throughout the entire place. I wandered for a good while in awe. On top of that, breakfast was delicious! (Even gluten free options!) Highly Highly recommended if you're passing through Monticello, this is the place to stay.

My wife and I were given room 10, which is in a small house across the parking lot from the main inn. The side house doesn't have wifi and is generally gross. The porch is covered in cobwebs and a few decades of grime. The lawn consists of mounds of dirt interspersed with weeds and piles of dead branches. There is a sign saying "Pardon our lawn. We are conserving water during the drought", as though the only thing the yard needs is water. Inside the house, it's dirty and I felt like I didn't want to touch anything. The windowsills and floorboards haven't been cleaned in a long time - they're past the point of needing dusting - they actually need to be wiped down. There aren't any decorations to speak of, which is probably good so that there is one less thing to get dusty. The carpet looks straight out of the 80s and there was an unappealing brown stain on the carpet in room 10. The linoleum floor in the bathroom had weird yellow stains and the wall of the shower had miscellaneous holes covered with sloppy patches. The lamp between the beds was just for looks - there wasn't an outlet or extension cord so that you could actually plug it in. There were also a few moths fluttering about. Don't walk barefoot in the kitchen - I don't think it's been swept this year. The kitchen had a coffee maker but NO COFFEE. I went to the main house in the morning thinking there would be coffee in the lobby, but there wasn't. Instead I walked across the highway to get coffee at a gas station. That was the highlight of my stay. Things don't get much better in the main house. The porch is also covered in cobwebs. You can't even sit on the benches out front because both arms are covered with spider webs. Breakfast is only served between 7:30 and 8:30, which seemed a little inflexible. One redeeming fact is that the breakfast was good. Fresh fruit to start, followed by eggs, bacon, and pancakes. They didn't have any juice but they finally let you have some coffee once breakfast starts. The staff were very friendly as well.

The Grist Mill was a lovely place to stay. It was nicely furnished, clean and had common sitting/TV rooms for the guests to share. It was a quiet neighborhood and the other guests were lovely as well. Breakfast started with a mixed fruit salad, and then we were served blueberry pancakes, scrambled eggs and bacon. The food was hot and prepared as you arrived for the meal. There was good coffee and tea as well. Heather's hospitality was wonderful and for me this also played out in the return of my best pillow! I left it at the Grist Mill and without hesitation Heather offered to mail it back to me at my home. So kind and gracious and so glad I left it at the Grist Mill and not at a chain hotel where I NEVER would have received such wonderful care! Thanks Heather!!

Just want to say as my star rating goes, this place is as good as it gets and more when it comes to comfort, convenience and phenomenal hospitality. My boyfriend and I stayed here for over one week while we climbed in Indian Creek. We wanted to treat ourselves over camping and good thing because the area can get incredibly windy. It's a beautiful, cozy, rustic "renovated-flour-mill-turned-bed-and-breakfast" with large areas for socializing and relaxing within different levels of the "home". We had a huge upstairs room that had a triangular shaped, attic ceiling that faced east so there was lots of sunlight in the morning. There were two beds, a king and a double; the king bed was comfy and sufficient. The room was decorated with some interesting items; kitschy, fun fixtures and some cool antiques. There was both heat and a/c in the room (so important!) and our bathroom was clean and stocked with amenities (soap, shampoo, dryer, towels). Our lovely, sweet hostess, Heather, was awesome in accommodating us for our late arrival since we were driving from Nevada. They seem to be flexible and understanding for early/late check-in's. In the mornings, yummy breakfast was cooked up and served by Heather. She is willing to cater to people's special dietary needs: vegetarian, gluten-free, diabetic, etc. It's good to notify her ahead of time as the local market carries only so much. It's also the guest's choice whether they want breakfast or not. She welcomes guests into the kitchen to cook themselves which was awesome because we had brought food for our trip and there is a special "guest fridge" to use. We would clean up after ourselves when we're done....not wanting to cause more burden for our innkeeper. I actually miss the interesting morning chats with Heather; she's a great conversationalist! After climbing, if I didn't have time to cook dinner (kitchen is open to access fridge 24 hours), there were a couple pretty good restaurants in the area. We'd treat ourselves to burgers or mexican food at R and F restaurant (which had poor reviews on here but believe me, they had the most patrons of any other places in town and their food was pretty good for a small town). Their pico de gallo or salsa was some of the best I've ever had in my life.....and we bought a huge container to go. Within close proximity to the inn was the supermarket too. We really enjoyed our stay and can't imagine staying anywhere else in town when we come back. It was all so reasonably priced for a B&B too! Profound thanks to Heather for her stellar hosting and beautiful inn! :) We are so grateful this place is here!

in case you find yourself in Monticello, go there! Utah is a fantastic state with amazing landscapes! Monticello is nothing special. Last year me and my wife stayed in Moab (about 1 hour from Monticello) that offers a lot of services (pubs, restaurants, shops, hotels) but we decided to change and selected Monticello on the map. Once in Monticello we discovered a very small town at the cross of 2 main streets, no one around....it was a little bit scary! so, if you find yourself in Monticello (by mistake or not), you definitely have to stay at Grist Mill Inn B&B. You'll feel safe. The owner is lovely, when we were there she had a 6 month baby, so cute! Our room (king size bed) was enormous, the forniture was a little bit weird, it has an old armchair with a bear on it and 3 trees close to it...! funny!

Did a Family Reunion in July of 2011. Site was very disappointing, but the family had a good time. Nightmare began when deposits were retained to cover disputed charges. Deposits due 14 days after departure per contract were retained for months. Threatening communication was necessary to finally get deposit back. We were very disappointed. I cannot recommend and will never personally return. I don't trust the management at all and would give -100 stars if possible.

We enjoyed a quiet stay! Lovely, large room. Nice amenities, cheerful, friendly and helpful innkeeper! Heather cooked and served us a lovely and delicious breakfast! The Inn is perfect for families...unique rooms with many beds! If you get to travel in UT...and your travel takes you thru Montecello- we recommend The Gristmill Inn! The new owners are making some great changes! Jim and Terry Ellick

This place stinks, literally! My husband set up this arrangement, so I had no idea what to expect. I have seen pics of lovely B&B's with beautiful antiques, and the name conjures images of a serene country setting. Wrong! This place sits right off the highway, and in fact ,is in a low income neighborhood. After staying there, I have seen pics online as examples of the rooms at the inn, however, our room was NOTHING like the pics. We were taken to an annex home, where the "workers" were housed when the mill was active, the host said. In fact, it was remniscent of being in a slaves quarters. Our "lovely" room looked like a dorm room where you could stack as many bodies as possible in a small room with low ceilings, two bunk beds flanking a queen bed with barely room to walk between. There was a tv on a shabby table off to the side of the room, turned sideways to the bed. You could only look at the screen while peering beneath the bunk bed ( how very comfortable). No lamps, just the bright glaring light on a ceiling fan that had a constant humming sound as it turned. There was no WIFI either. We were told we could come sit in the lobby of their other house to use it there (so very convenient that would be). Worst of all, was the horrendous sweet chemical odor that reeked in the room. You could barely breathe with the fumes. There appeared to be no air conditioning, no ventilation. It was suffer in the stench until daylight broke and we could escape our room. Even thought this was a B&B, no breakfast was provided for us. They claimed the guests in the main house was making their own breakfast so, for some reason, use "lucky" guests in the "slaves quarters" would not have the option of breakfast. Not even a cup of coffee available in their main house, as far as we saw. So much for hospitality! I must say this was the worst experience I've EVER had in a vacation rental room. I would NEVER consider staying there again. At least in the cheapest of motels, they have the courtesy to set a tv in front of the bed where you might be able to see it. These people, I guess, didn't really care about your comfort while there. Since I originally wrote this review, I have seen pics to illustrate rooms for this inn. NOWHERE have I seen pics of the room we were stuck in. I have also seen the receipt my husband paid which was nearly $100 for a night of fumes and displeasure. I am more outraged because $50 would be too much for the room we were put in and also to show pics of fairly okay looking rooms online to potential customers, and then stick people in clearly substandard rooms such as the one we were put in reeks of bait and switch. It makes me further outraged about our experience there!

We found the Grist Mill Inn to be delightful. I am amazed at the one post for this Inn but I do understand that everyone has a different experience regardless of where they stay. We had an upstairs - 3rd floor - room with a king bed and a twin. It was just right for us. The breakfast was great too - we had a German Pancake that filled the plate and bacon. Fruit was on the table. It was very nice. Crystal is the manager who helped us and she was delightful. We enjoyed our stay. I would recommend it.
