Five stars for an excellent sushi chef and a patient waitress along with great food. I came here for a quick lunch with a friend. It was a Saturday (7/25/15) and the restaurant was about 2/3 full. Pleasantly decorated and clean. We sat at the sushi bar. Our sushi chef explained we were to order the fish with him and anything from the kitchen through our waitress. He also chatted with us throughout our meal. He was patient with my questions about the various fish he was working with. We started out with an albacore tuna nigiri. EXCELLENT! Fresh - amazing taste and texture. We next had smoked salmon nigiri and eel which were also very good. The salmon in particular had a subtle smokey flavor but rich, raw salmon taste. Excellent presentation. The roll we ordered was the Thai roll, a tuna based roll with cilantro, avocado, Thai chilies, and Sriracha sauce. This was SO VERY GOOD - a good sized bite, not huge, not crazy, just fresh and a bit spicy. Our waitress was knowledgable about the menu and quick with a refill. Also nice to talk with, friendly. I was glad she took care of us. I will definitely be back! +1 star for the albacore tuna nigiri. Amazing flavor. +1 star for the singing cook in the bowels of the kitchen. +1 star for the Thai roll. Fresh and spicy without looking like an experiment. +1 star for carrying Epic beers. I didn't partake today, but I'm glad they support local breweries +1 star for an awesome chef and a great waitress who helped my friend and me.

Over priced for the same thing I can get at any sushi place in the valley. It was good food tho, I just have a hard time giving credit to a restaurant that can't handle a group of 12 people. We had a birthday dinner here, and I think about 12 people. But it took over 1 hour and 25 minutes to get out food. I get that it is a big group and there are complications with dividing checks, but that should hinder the ability to serve food in a decent amount of time. I may give them another chance, on a Sunday afternoon, when there a likely to be few customer in there, and when I am eating by my self. But sadly the service guaranteed that I will never bring another large group to this place.

I eat here frequently and have always thought their food was very good. This is my favorite sushi place in the Salt Lake area next to Takashi which is in a class all of its own. Try the Executive Suite, Coco Cabana and Sunshine rolls. Also the Tsunami shrimp appetizer is amazing. I've also always had prompt friendly service here. My primary reason for not giving 5 stars is that on occasion the quality is a bit off. Also the Fort Union location has an upstairs seating area that just doesn't live up to the ambiance of the rest of the restaurant. I am always disappointed when I get seated up there.

Sushi was great! Yummy!! Place is clean and servers are attentive. Good service. The Tsunami ribs was very flavorful. I really enjoyed my dragon roll and cococabana sushi! My husband also enjoyed his lunch bento box with teriyaki steak and chicken. Overall great experience, would Definitely recommend to family and friends.

Went here for a large birthday, and they were very good on service, but a bit pricier than I am used to. They did forget part of my husbands order but got it taken care of quickly.

It's sad, this place WAS (emphasizing past tense) my favorite place for sushi.. The waiter we had twice could care less about our order, or at least made it obvious.. The food left a bad feeling in the stomach, and the waiter yet again could care less about splitting a transaction which led to a void or two which hopefully he was honest about. The service has been going so down hill, it's incredibly unfortunate. They're gonna start losing customers....

BEST SUSHI I'VE EVER TASTED. I love love love sushi and I like to try a new sushi joint everywhere I go. Nothing has compared to tsunami... All over the world. Seriously. I've been here way too many times to count probably 50+ Start out with the cucumber salad, edamame, miso soup or tempura vegetables. My dad loves the ribs for an appetizer. Some of my favorite rolls include the Executive Suite, Sunshine, Don Juan, Aloha, BTC, green goblin, PD, Thai delight... I could go on and on. LOVE.

Love this place, always fresh and amazing. Best of all, they have an EXTENSIVE GF menu and they take it very seriously. I have celiac disease, and I've never been sick here. And maybe the best part is the GF cheesecake they have from 1 Luv bakery. It's so good, that they serve to all the guests GF or not and they have no idea. Love this place, keep up the good work

This is the BEST PLACE for allergy worry free dining. The Tsunami staff are quite possibly the most professional staff in Utah when it comes to allergy worry free dining. They take their allergies seriously. Which is important because, nationally, food allergies are on the rise in the younger generation. My GF took me here on Sunday for my birthday. I hear that Friday/Saturday nights are a mad house here, so I'm glad we went on a Sunday. Plus, their Happy Hour specials are good all day on Sunday! We ordered the Tsunami roll (among many other items). Our server knew that my GF was a gluten-free diner because we had asked for their gluten-free menu...which, BTW, is a real menu and not some half-assed menu like some other restaurants that claim to be "gluten-free" use...if the restaurant uses a half-assed hand-written or whatever "gluten-free" menu, that should be a red flag right there. When our Tsunami roll arrived, she tried a slice of the roll and noticed that there was soft-shell spider crab inside. Now, we both know that soft-shell spider crab is usually deep-fried in a flour-based batter, so she stopped eating it and asked to talk to the manager about this. We were a bit concerned because it was on the gluten-free menu. Could this be an oversight? Well, when the manager arrived, he explained this to us: * Their spider roll uses a gluten-free batter +1 * They fry their spider roll in a special pan only used for gluten free menu items +1 * They use separate oil only used for their gluten free menu items +1 It made my GF so happy and reassured after she heard this! What a huge sigh of relief and confidence, actually! In fact, this is now the only place that we know of where she can order a gluten-free spider roll! I've always known that Tsunami was a great place for vegetarian eaters because my hair stylist always talks about them. Now, I know they are great for gluten-free dining as well! Here's a sampling of our favorites (not all are gluten-free), you'll have to check the menu: * Uni * Korean style boneless beef short ribs * Executive suite * Tsunami roll * Spider roll * Negima with scallions * Broiled green lip mussels * Hernan's chicken tacos You can find slightly cheaper or cut-rate restaurants out there but if food allergies are a serious issue in your life, then you can finally eat out without the worry. If you're looking for healthy eating with solid service, top-quality ingredients and a staff that's serious about food allergies? Then, it doesn't get any better than this unless you buy it yourself and make it at home.

My family of five eats here A LOT. And we absolutely love it. It's a little tough to get into on the weekends, but if we're craving Tsunami on those nights, we just order it to-go. Their takeout process is painless and the rewards are delicious. My absolute must-get, go-to roll is the Buddha. It is divine. It's asparagus, jicama, carrots and avocado all wrapped up in rice then seaweed, then tossed in tempura batter and fried. SO GOOD! It's my five-year-old's favorite dish of all time (honestly). My husband raves about the nigiri here, and his favorite rolls are the Sunshine and the Executive. He also gets the noodle bowl (which isn't on the menu) with shrimp and tempura vegetables. One of the things Tsunami does very well is their small plates. The Negima is so so good, and make sure to substitute asparagus for the scallions. The gyoza is always great, as are the teriyaki skewers. We also love Hernan's chicken tacos, which is a little bit like a lettuce wrap (and also not at the same time). This is a great dining experience. The food and service are consistently good, and if you like sushi, this is some of the best around.

Nothing new to say here that I haven't already raved about in my reviews for the other locations - overall, it's the best sushi experience for the price in this state. They consistently forge delicious raw creations on the fly - always try the specials! They offer a huge menu of cooked food, for those not into raw. We had several non-sushi-lovers in our group on Saturday night, and they all enjoyed the various cooked selections they chose. Raw eaters, listen up - the best regulars for us are (in order of affection): Sunshine, Cococabana, Executive Suite, Jenny, TNT, Montauk, Summer, and the list goes on...you really can't go wrong here no matter what you order. Their brand of habanero sauce comes with a few rolls, but you can ask for it on the side for dipping - it's transcendant. Buy a bottle to go, too, if you like it - I put that *^!% on everything! Service here, like the other locations, is always phenomenal. We had the pleasure of being served by Cambrey this last visit, and realized we knew her from the South Jordan location. She is truly one of the best servers you can have anywhere. She gets it. Thank you Cambrey, for handling our large and demanding group with efficiency and style! They offer valet parking at this location, and I suggest you use it. Unless you like a walk before and after a meal. If you do, the large parking structure just to the southeast typically has space. There really is no in-between here, though. The rest of the parking arrangement around the various storefronts up here is a huge pain in the ass, and I'm convinced is only accessible if you arrive prior to 5:30 a.m. I avoid it. Regardless of location, we will always be big fans of Tsunami. After all, a day without a Sunshine Roll is like a day without orange juice...or lollipops...or rainbows...

If you are looking for a group setting with lots of Asian options and great service...Tsunami is the place. To start, they accept reservations on Open Table. When you arrive they offer Valet right in front of the restaurant. The host greeted us and took us to our table immediately. So far I was impressed. The table was comfortable without being crowded for our group. The waitstaff was courteous and accommodated everyone's taste and uniqueness. Then there's the food...within 10 minutes we had appetizers and then the sushi rolls and entrees were rolling out. The salads were fresh, the Korean Short Ribs were so tender and tasty which brought out the flavor, and the sushi and the wasabi was so fresh and melted into the soy sauce. Overall, my experience was great, and I highly recommend Tsunami for a tasty Japanese treat.

Pretty good sushi. If you have a choice, I would say make the journey to akasaka sushi about 2-3 miles northeast instead. Surprisingly the ribs were amazing. The sushi and service was great. It just has a franchised, corporate type vibe. Not an authentic sushi feeling. Good for lunch and or a date.

Great Designer Rolls, Great attention to detail.! Personal Service, attentive, very friendly and professional staff. The freshest food possible, decorated with artistic innovation. Good Prices,! Premium Rolls for 10-12 Bucks. Same price as the Dry Sushi Guy at Smiths Grocery Store. And this comes with all of the ambiance and service. Will come back here often.

I come here for the miso soup I always ask for extra white lily mushrooms to be put in my miso soup because its amazing. I can officially say now that after 3 years of eating at tsunami I have had every roll on the menu. They need to make the hot momba a permanent fixture on the vegetarian menu. It is an amazing roll with tons of flavor and contrast. The tempura battered vegetables and shrimp is like crack to me I get it every single time I'm never disappointed with the quality of the vegetables. & I love that I can substitute red peppers for the onions the sweet potatoes are amazing the mushrooms are awesome. tsunami is always busy so I always try to make a reservation if I can so I know I will get a table. If you want good quality sushi this is the place in Utah to get it I've been to several other sushi houses and by far tsunami has it down to a science

I had the lunch special Bento-style box. This was my first time eating food from this place and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. The rice, potstickers, and tempura vegetables were wonderful sides to the entrée sushi and chicken teriyaki. Both of these entrée items were flavorful and left me wanting to eat more even though by the time I finished the box I was completely full and very satisfied. I would highly recommend the lunch special bento box. I also appreciated that even though I did take-out they still provided me with the appropriate condiments (i.e. Soy sauce, wasabi, fish soup, & pickled ginger) to make my sushi and other items as enjoyable as possible. When I have done take-out from other places I have felt robbed a little because I felt like I didn't have all the options that I would have had, but I didn't feel that way here. The great easygoing service made my take-out experience fast and pleasant and I definitely plan on eating here again so as to enjoy more of their sushi and delicious sides.

The rolls at Tsunami are really good, but the reason I keep coming back is for sushi chef Chris. So much fun getting served by him. He's made me some really unique rolls that had me say "wow". Sushi done right.

  • Sean K.

Tsunami never disappoints. The sashimi is delicious, the tempura satisfies like no other. The spare ribs (not on the menu, but ask for them!) are spectacular. And I love the attention to tradition. This is the only Japanese restaurant I have been to who prefers to NOT serve a spoon with your miso (it is traditionally sipped from the bowl.) And the service is always fast, courteous, helpful, and accurate. Cambrey did a great job!

  • Rubies A.

I am giving a 5 star not for the food, even as it's delicious and outrageously fresh and never disappointing, but to the server Jake who works there. This guy had made me a tsunami weekly regular. He is funny and attentive and absolutely makes dining here a great experience. If you eat at this location definitely ask for him, he will treat you good!

We came early and it paid off in fast rolls from the sushi chef. Started with sesame spinach salad (yum), Buddha roll (delicious), Thai roll from the specials menu (very good, fish was fresh), aloha roll (just okay), Tokyo cowboy (different but tasty), and teriyaki chicken skewers. Great service from Paul.

  • Kimberli B.

One word. Awful. We ordered hamachi sashimi. It was FULL of tendon. It was the worst sashimi that I have ever eaten. The rolls were actually not that bad, but in the end it did not matter. The service was the worst I have ever experienced. We were brought the bill before we were brought our food. Our server did not smile one time. We were discouraged from ordering more food because he was wanting to turn the table over. I will not return to this establishment and I would encourage others to stay away!

Loved it! Great atmosphere on a busy Friday night. Reservations for the weekend would be recommended. The large hot sake was priced well at $10 a carafe. We ordered mostly sushi with the Isaac, a special that evening, being the favorite. The other dish was tempura shrimp and teriyaki beef. It was a good version of this classic. We really enjoyed the experience and the food. The service was a bit lacking but it was quite busy. This place is a do-over for sure!

Always amazing. Fresh. Great service. There are always specials. By far my favorite sushi restaurant. Jenny and calamari are a must. Oh and the muscle shooters!!

sushi is one of my favorite foods and i'm always in the mood for some delicious seafood! both takashi and tsunami are my favorite for sushi in salt lake, but i tend to go to tsunami more often since they have multiple locations that are closer to me. i do appreciate that tsunami has a gluten free menu including beer and dessert! most of my favorites can be made gluten free and they are very accommodating with specials that i want to try. when in season uni and californian albacore are delicious! i also love their live scallops, but it's always a good idea to call ahead to check to see if they have an item available if it's a special since they tend to run out quickly sometimes. i usually get the negima with scallions, executive roll, jenny roll, various sashimi, and any specials that sound good. the bf loves the korean short ribs, ribs, and spider roll. the service and quality of food is pretty consistent every time we visit. they usually have a gluten free cheesecake available for dessert and ice cream is always a winner. one time i had passion fruit ice cream that they made in house and it was amazing! i still think about it and am waiting for it to return so i can enjoy it again!

Well, the atmosphere of this place is nice. I feel that this place gets too much vibe for what it's worth (sorry, but true). The menu items are just far over-priced for the quality. We ordered calamari as an appetizer, which frankly was barely calamari at all, as it did not have much squid in it at all, and the potstickers were dreadful. My only justification for giving this place a three-star is because the sushi and the tempura are good. The sushi tastes fresh, and the vegetable and shrimp tempera have good chunks inside each individual piece.

Tsunami is good, not great. Expensive for what you get. Skip it and make the trip downtown to Sapa.

  • Scott M.

Reasons I love this place: 1) They have the world's happiest busboy 2) Elephant-shaped fork necklaces 3) Waiters with scrumptious beards 4) REAL WASABI!! 5) Shiso 6) Generous sushi portions 7) Yummers 8) Mayonnaise is not a required roll ingredient 9) It has that certain... I don't know what 10) Cambrey - it's not just a breakfast cereal anymore: she's also an awesome server! If you like sushi, you'll love this place. I just wish you had my favorite sake: ozeki karatamba!

  • Siew B.

Good stuff! We ordered the lunch special (5 pc nigiri, 1/2 each cali and tuna) and spicy yellowtail maki. Pros: Fast service, in and out in under an hour. Gluten free menu- w00t w00t. We enjoyed the chocolate coconut tea - tasted quite nice (just a bag in a little pot). Tasty fish - good ratio of fish to rice. Husband enjoyed everything (he's not a huge sushi fan yet, so that's saying something). Cons: Bit pricey, best saved for special occasions. Wish I could give 4.5 stars. There you have it. Now go forth and enjoy.

Awesome staff, amazing sushi, & the Asian Pear Sake was THE best drink I've had in Utah thus far!!! Yesterday was my first Tsunami experience, and I already can't wait to go back!

Delicious meal! Can't find better sushi in Utah! Great service - great atmosphere! I love this place! Thank you Cambrey!

  • Mike H.

The sushi is about as good as you're going to get here in Utah. The service is somewhat disorganized and slow. A word of caution - watch your credit card billings. On two occasions the incorrect amount was billed to my card.

    (3)
  • Doug F.

The sushi is decent. The ambiance is cool and the service is excellent. The wine list could be better but they have daily/weekly sushi and wine specials, which adds a nice touch. For better sushi I recommend Sapa or Takashi, but I would still recommend this place.

You can not. Can not go wrong with any tsunami location. Personal we know at least one of their wonderful rollers behind the bar at each location. Which high tens the experience. But they have something for the menu for everyone weather they're sushi lovers or not. High grade beautiful sushi. And all around sweet and amazing employees. One of our out common places to go.

Tsunami at fort union is the place to be! Great atmosphere, amazing service and everyone is very nice. From our server to friendly managers, like Sean, they made our dining experience an unforgettable one.

Tsunami has always kept the quality consistent over the years. Although it carries less of the unique traditional Japanese favorites that I love, I consider it one of my top choices for Japanese in the Salt Lake Valley. They typically have a wide selection of Sake and diverse small plates and seasonal fare. I often times try to order from the daily fish selections...many of which are not traditionally seen on Utah sushi menus. Their chef's are consistently on point with their knife skills and the cuts and portions are almost always ideal. If you have not tried lunch at Tsunami, I suggest it. The bento box is perfect for the price. I cannot guarantee the quality for all of their locations, but I frequent both the Sugarhouse and Cottonwood Heights location. in particular, the Cottonwood Heights location has great ambience and style. I recommend giving it a try.

Excellent service and food. My husband and I ate at this location this week after seeing a movie. We had a nice experience at the South Jordan location. This location is a winner too. We ordered miso soup, appetizer ribs and 3 sushi rolls. We sat at the sushi bar. Service was impressive-both the sushi chef and server were professional and prompt. Several staff other than our server stopped by and asked if we needed anything during our meal. Genuine and relaxed. Best rolls: Don Juan (fried), Seattle (asparagus was perfect). Any roll with unagi at this restaurant is a hit Best appetizer: ribs on the bone (small-you get 4). Tender, delicious sauce, nice blend of spices, very fresh. This is our new favorite.

Your manager Shawn is fabulous! He gives us such tremendous service, we follow him wherever he goes! We met him at Cheesecake Factory and now we have followed him here. Love the food and service, we will definitely be back.

Really enjoyed this place. Went on consecutive nights with a business partner. It was that good. We sat at the bar both nights as we like interaction with the chefs. They were great. Offering up suggestions and items not listed on the menu. Very upbeat, great attitudes. The sushi is some of the best around, pretty and tasty. Never had to wait for pretty much anything. Service was spot on both nights. I'm in a sushi coma still.

  • Rachel A.

While visiting for work, my vendor took me here. For service and friendliness, the staff is unbelievable. Definitely five stars. They were quick, attentive and all smiling. However, the Vegas roll was a bit disappointing. It was caked too much in the tempura. If you like a thick layer, you'll love it, but I like a thinner layer.

  • Baxter D.

I've become much more of a fan of this place over time. The sushi selection is ok but I have liked every roll that I have tried to date and the Tokyo Cowboy is fairly unique. Additionally, the Chicken Katsu is well made and noticeable better than many comparatively priced restaurants.

  • Julie H.

I love this place #1 for the ambiance #2 for the sushi. I have been going to this Tsunami for a few years and i keep coming back so it must be good. The executive suite is SO good. The paper thin lime is what does it for me. I ordered the Cococabana and Fire Breathing Dragon as well as some other smaller rolls, all of them were delicious. There was some fried lobster thing ordered as well (Not my thang, I don't enjoy fried foods). I left a star off because we ordered 5 rolls and were only served 4 (which is fine because there was only 2 of us and holy crap that was a LOT of food) and they don't serve coffee. If they started serving espresso, it would make my day! Overall- I think its decently priced for what it is and I like it that they have super fresh fish.

    (4)
  • Bine D.

I was really impressed by this sushi place, mostly because they offer several clearly marked veggie rolls in absolutely delicious combos - great for vegans! It is a bit pricey and the rolls could probably be a bit bigger, but nevertheless I felt it was worth it.

  • Ryan M.

Tsunami has the best sushi and rolls in Utah. Ask for Cambrey as your server, she's the best!

    (5)
  • Janice G.

The last time we went our Sushi smelled very fishy/old. :( and the water ALWAYS tastes very weird here...Water is not supposed to smell or taste like anything. I know how good sushi is supposed to taste and smell like. It's too bad there are not that many good sushi restaurants here in SLC which is why a lot of people here probably don't know what good sushi is..

    (2)
  • Scott F.

Great sushi rolls. I really liked their coco cabana roll. It was a bit pricey at near $60 for 3 rolls and a diet coke. I might come back, but the cost might keep me away.

  • Mark M.

I was so impressed with the service here. The sushi was amazing and paired very well with the Sake recommended by the server. Sean L. stopped by to make sure everything was great. He made us feel very valued as guests. We will be back for sure.

  • Tony L.

I had opportunities to visit Tsunami a few times, they got a more contemporary design than most Japanese restaurants, and the place has nice vibe to it too. The location is also convenience for a movie within the same complex. Most of their dishes plated beautifully, but taste just seems mediocre at best. Sushi rolls never really stood out and fishes were never too fresh neither was well prepared. Their cooked dishes got the look as well, but most of the time tasted quite bland. Some of the sauce with stuff jalapenos tasted ok. They have a decent saki selection, if you are a heavy drinker. Service can be a tossup here, sometime we got great server and there were time we had a rather forgetful one.

  • Rey R.

Tsunami is good, not great. Expensive for what you get. The rolls are very small and not all that fresh. It shouldnt smell fishy or taste fishy. Better places out there for what you spend.

  • Brad S.

Tsunami is just plain awesome. Their food is delicious, from the Teriyaki Ribs (yes I said ribs) to the Tsunami Shrimp to the Executive, Vegas, Don Juan, Jenni and Sunshine rolls and many more items. I love this sushi restaurant. The staff is excellent, always friendly and attentive. All I can say is I hope they will always be this good because if they are they have a customer for life.

  • Dave M.

I went to the Midvale location and absolutely loved the rolls and the service. A+ on both! Highly recommend to anyone wanting quality sushi, some unique choices and great service. Only downside was parking, so many reserved spots for all the stores in the shopping center. They do offer free valet, which I would recommend taking advantage of. If you like sushi, you will love this restaurant!

    (5)
  • Alisha M.

I have been to all three sites and have had fabulous experiences as each. The sushi is great quality and I think the prices are good for the quality. I love how serious they take food allergies and I am never worried when I go here about my food coming into contact with what I am allergic too, she also have a gluten free menu which includes some of their popular rolls re-made to be gluten free. I have had great experiences with the staff as well, our last two visits we had Cambry as a waitress and she was AMAZING. She was so friendly, attentive and funny. Really made for a great birthday dinner. Also if you don't have a VIP card you should get one!

We love the executive roll and the Thai roll special. They are doing a lot of fun specials with Thai chilies right now, which is awesome for anyone who like a little kick of heat.

What's not to like? Tsunami is in the upper echelon of sushi restaurants in the valley. The decor is very modern and the restaurant is always very clean. It's located next store to a movie theatre so it's a wonderful place to grab a great dinner and then a movie for date night. If you go on a weekend, expect a lengthy wait averaging 45 - 60 minutes. They do accept reservations but do not allow call ahead seating. As for the food - It's fresh, inventive, and flavorful. Some of my favorite rolls include the Jenny, Sunshine, Vegas, and the Tsunami. Save room for desert because the fried bananas with coconut ice cream is simply amazing. Why the 4 stars you ask? The rolls are on the more expensive side and hamper the 5 star rating. Also, on various occasions I've been told they've run out of soft shell crab. Some rolls exclusively use this ingredient, and if they're out, you're unable to order it. Not a huge deal breaker, but it's a bummer when you get all worked up and you're told on numerous occasions that they're out, or they have yet to order more. If it's not a regular ingredient, take it off the menu. Overall, Tsunami is a wonderful establishment to eat some flavorful, fresh sushi. Try it, and you won't be disappointed.

Went looking for some good sushi and had a friend suggest this place. The sushi wasn't bad but it wasn't good enough to want to come back either. A little pricey also.

  • Jim A.

Sushi dinner for four. It was a weeknight and the place was moderately busy. Staffing level was very high but service was inexplicably slow and inattentive - we waited an unreasonable time to order and for everything we ordered to be brought to the table. Sushi rolls and nigiri were fresh and flavorful but the fish portions were meager. Prices are middling to high for sushi in SLC. Given the pricing, poor service and stingy fish portions, I'll be unlikely to go back.

One of the best places around! We had amazing professional service from the manager ( Sean) to our server (Ryan) and if i knew everyone else who helped make our experience that much better. Thank you! We will most definitely become regulars to this Tsunami.

Horrible service. Waited about 20 minutes to put in a drink order and then never received the entire order. Then waited another 15-20 minutes to place our food order which we didn't even receive everything we ordered. Waitress was not apologetic and actually avoided coming back to the table and when we asked for the check, it took another 15 minutes. Sushi was just average. Would not recommend this place to anyone.

Just a quality dining experience. Good food, nice atmosphere, attentive waiter. We had a sirloin combo with sushi. Our little girl had the kids California roll combo which was an excellent value. I'm sure we'll be back & would recommend it to anyone.

Great restaurant! Great food, great service, great atmosphere, great prices! I don't eat seafood but the rest of my family does, we go there all the time and I'm able to get food that I like! I love their tempura vegetables more than any other place I've had it! The waiters are always so kind! We went here for my birthday twice and they've always been so nice! They'll let you bring in a cake for a birthday. It's a great restaurant!

amazing sushi. The sashimi is great. The kococabana roll is the best thing on the menu. The sunshine roll is amazing. The jalapeno teriyaki ribs are unbeatable.

Tsunami Sugar House is usually our spot, but due to the size of our group, we ventured to Tsunami Midvale, as they could better accommodate all 18 of us. We were a little apprehensive about doing sushi for a large group, and expected there would be delays and timing issues, and would have been fine with that. Boy, were we wrong! Tsunami's execution and service were beyond impressive. The appetizers came out quickly, the many many sushi rolls came out together, divided among 3 platters with a variety of rolls, making it so everyone within arms reach of said platters could easily grab the rolls, and not much plate passing was required. A few of our friends are allergic to shellfish, and their dietary needs were easily met, and served on their own plates. Our server, Vinny, was wonderful X a million. Plates were cleared, reset, drinks were delivered- we never had to ask for anything to be done. Almost a week later, and our group is still talking about what a great experience we had, and really, Vinny KILLED it! Thank you, Vinny, chefs, and everyone else at Tsunami for the awesome evening (sorry about the sake bomb noise, we'll opt for the private room next time!).

Some of the fish was good but some of it was obviously old (gray tuna ?!?). Prices were high for what you got and service was lacking,

We go to Tsunami quite often. Once or twice a month often. It has become our go to sushi in the south valley and we frequent both the South Jordan and Fort Union locations. Last night we were at the sushi bar at Ft. Union location and couldn't quite get our favorite appetizer, so I asked our sushi chef, Marl, to come up with something of his own. It was similar to what we originally wanted and very tasty. After eating a couple of rolls off the menu I asked Marl to create our last one on his own. Using the fresh albacore that is in season and cucumbers, mango, avocado and a lot of other tasty, fresh ingredients we had one of the best rolls I've ever had. It was savory but also bursting with a fresh flavor. I didn't think we could have a new experience at Tsunami, but Marl did a great job and it was different than it has been before and equally as good, if not better! I'm not so sure that its fair for the waiters to have those great beards and not the sushi chefs? Maybe if they wore beard nets?

Best lunch and service today! We frequent this restaurant often and just want to send a shout out to our server Max who was not only attentive but definitely addressed our picky needs with zero complaints. Tsunami is an amazing place. Don't miss it!

We always love the Jenny roll topped with a thin slice of lemon and the Executive roll which is a little sweet. We also like the PD...it has a kick to the finish in your mouth. Service is attentive and our glasses always stay full.

I was pleasantly surprised by Tsunami. It is true they are out of some of the seafood but that is because it's either not available or fresh. I'd much rather not have it in that case! Service was good and efficient. The sushi was original and tasty.

Love this place!! It's become a regular when we eat out. Even if you're not a sushi fan they have delicious entree's to choose from. The staff is always friendly and on top on things. Highly Recommended!!

A friend recommended this place, and it was pretty awesome. We had several specialty rolls, and they were all very, very good. The prices were a good value for the tasty morsels. As noted by others, reservations are pretty important here. We had a friendly waiter who wasn't intrusive, and the dining area itself is pretty, not cramped at all (for a sushi place). I was afraid of sushi in SLC before, but no longer.

I only wish I had taken a camera with me so I could take pictures of this beautiful food! So they close at 10 pm and my friend and I walked in at 9:45. I wasn't quite sure how we would be treated or what we would have been served. Being as this was my first time I was a little on the worrisome side. I started the order by getting a TNT roll and a mainlander. I was interested in the mainlander since it is topped with Kobe beef. We also got an order of Scottish salmon and smoked salmon Nigiri. The TNT roll as a bit messy and fell apart but that was really no problem for us. The salmon was so decadent. It melted in my mouth! Now the mainlander was the most interesting. Tempura lobster roll with the Kobe beef on top. Second best roll of the night! Beef seared on the edges and pink in the middle. Just the way raw beef should be. When I say it was the second best roll it's because the next round I ordered the Cococabana roll. I have never been blown away by a sushi roll quite like this it was coconut shrimp provided a flavor like no other and the habanero sauce that accompanies is spicy and flavorful. I was even able to grab a couple of rolls to go. I have never been more pleased with a restaurant and how nice they were to us even after closing.

Updated. Previous review was based on bad first experience mostly to do with host/waitstaff at one location. Since then we've been going to the sandy location and have been 5 star pleased there. The bar is knowledgable, friendly and always a pleasure to sit at. They provide a specials menu with delicious seasonally fresh fish so there is almost always something new to try. It's been awhile since we've been to another location - maybe our first impression was a rare freak experience but first impressions are hard to shake -

Tsunami is one of the best places for sushi in Salt Lake. I really like sitting at the sushi bar on a slower night because you can really learn a lot about the fish when you chat with one of the sushi chefs. Tsunami has a great selection of traditional and trendy rolls, as well as sashimi and nigiri. They always have seasonal things to try as well. I think my favorite roll is the Don Juan. It's one of those delicious tempura-fried creations stuffed with tuna and cream cheese and amazing-ness. I don't even know what all is in it, but it's a mouth orgasm. I also really like the Aloha roll, which combines tuna, mango, and jalapeno. I highly recommend you pair any sushi with the Dreamy Clouds saki. There are things other than sushi on the menu, but I haven't tried them because I'm not going to go to a sushi restaurant and not order sushi. That would just be silly.

Asked how long the wait was because we were late to catch a movie after dinner. The hostesses didn't even look up at me and said an hour wait. I won't be back due to their customer service. Acted like they were mad to have another customer show up.

Delicious food... Terrible service I have always loved going to tsunami in sugarhouse and I love the menu. But I decided to venture down to the fort union location and I can promise that I will not be going back. The sushi was good, but the service was terrible. We went on a slow night and it took the waitress 45 minutes to even get our drink order and she was incredibly rude and curt the whole time.. if you want good food AND good service, take the extra 15 minutes and go to the sugarhouse location, or go to asian star, they have even better sushi. Also, awful parking, it took us 10 minutes to get a spot

I really like Tsunami. And I have been to a few of the locations and they have all been consistent in the fair served and the quality as well. Try the Executive Roll, the Sunshine Roll, and the spare rib appetizer. You wont be disappointed. My daughter and I always order extra Habanero sauce to dip ALL our sushis in since it is soo darned good. Warning the heat more hits you AFTER you have consumed quite a lot so you are already committed before you know how much you will suffer. HOwever, if you like heat, you will enjoy this and it truly is not too bad on the heat scale. I love their dinner salads and I think the atmosphere is really very pleasing. They do take reservations (or did fairly recently) and while I have found the servers generally pretty good, it does vary some in how quickly your food arrives and how friendly the experience is. I DO recommend this place and look forward to it each and every time we go back.

Maybe I ordered the wrong stuff but I was very underwhelmed. Tempura was heavy and greasy. Goya wasn't worth eating. Miso soup was on but just a little too salty. Sauces were good. Prices weren't bad. Hipster staff made me feel uncomfortable.

Ate here last night around 9 on a Friday night. Lets just say service was horrible including the manager on duty who constantly was speaking to his employees in a very loud manner that we knew more than we cared to know. All our rolls came out on warm rice and not one stuck together. Only good thing about our meal was the pearl sake. We wanted to complain but to who? the coked out manager already yelling at his employees???

I've had more sushi from Tsunami than any other place and I crave sushi from Tsunami more than any other. I'd hooked. Try the Jenny roll and the Asian ribs. You'll get hooked too! Update: Just learned about the BTC (secret roll, not on the menu). Delicious!

You'll be hard-press to find a sushi restaurant better than Tsunami. They have many unique rolls - many that aren't on the menu. Be sure to ask for the "Green Globe" appetizer. This is a great place to take someone who has never had sushi before, and there are plenty of dishes that aren't raw. The esobar sashimi (AKA butterfish) is by far my favorite.

I love good sushi - I mean who doesn't, really? But I don't like all the 'American sushi' or 'fake sushi'. Meaning: sweet, sauced and fried. I like sashimi or Nigiri. Fish or fish and rice, period. That said, they do some fine sushi. Fresh and clean. Their Nigiri is very nice and I always make a meal out of several selections plus some miso soup and tea or sake. Ahhh.... The other night we went here after a movie. They had fresh sardine Nigiri. Oh my was it nice with just a little wasabi or lemon. It took me back to eating fresh Norwegian sardines. I am not saying you need to order these to have a nice meal by any means. All the sushi I have had was nice and fresh. They make nice tempura and soup as well. Plus do try the jalapeno teriyaki. The spice cuts the insipid sweetness of teriyaki. Enjoy yourself!

I ate here a couple months ago. I'm not a huge sushi fan but went for a friends birthday party. We shared a few of the rolls around and the one's that I had were good. The service was good, for such a big group, everything came out pretty close. I think this place is great for a mixed group of people, those that want sushi and those who either just want to try it or even don't care for it. Their other options were excellent. I had the short ribs and they were amazing. I would definitely go back, even if I didn't want sushi.

I was in the Midvale area of SLC, so I Yelp'd to find a good sushi place. Tsunami came up so i gave it a try. I sat at the sushi bar and was given menus by the front door girl, but no waiter/waitress came by. The sushi chef, Sam, was very pleasant but seemed to also be surprised that I hadn't been approached by anyone asking if I wanted a drink or anything. 10 long, uncomfortable minutes go by and Sam was able to get someone to get me a large Sapporo, but wow, not a good beginning. I ordered the 7-piece nigiri dinner ($17.99) and it was good, but it doesn't come with any thing else...no salad, no miso, which is sad, because if you come in for a "dinner", it should include a side dish or two. But that's what it was. The sushi was good and included: Tuna, Salmon, Snapper, White tuna, Albacore, Yellowtail, and Unagi. Chef Sam kept the conversation flowing, and that was okay, but the wait staff should've been much more attentive when I was first seated. Three stars because the fish was good, but the service should've been better.

This is by far our favorite sushi place around. Both this one and the one in South Jordan are excellent. They have great rolls and their "Dynamite Scallops" are one of my all-time favorite dishes of any restaurant I have ever been to! Great quality, nice atmosphere.

OK we all know how much I love to eat tuna and snapper (you have a filthy mind). This has long been one of my favorite places. This is my wife's number 1 favorite sushi they are always courteous and very helpful. We have tried just about every roll on the menu and it was nice to see that they refreshed their choices so we had new opportunities. I was impressed with the Thai roll but it was about as hot that creepy guy that keeps staring in my window (if he doesn't stop I am to stop walking around naked with my blinds open.......in a few months I need the self esteem boost). You can't go wrong with the D.T.H. and the tuna (easy now) was moist and tender and just melted in my mouth (I said stop it). I also love the fact that they have a customer loyalty card that we can get points to reduce the cost of a meal. Plus I now work so close I can go there every day if I want (I am in training to be the stunt double in the next Free Willy movie). If you are in the neighborhood and are looking for some good original sushi as well as the traditional staples then swing by and tell them Irishman sent ya (when they look at you confused and say "who?" that is there way of saying they know me)

  • J B.

We were seated within a couple of minutes on a Saturday evening yet the restaurant was mostly full. The waitress was extremely prompt and helpful explaining the menu. Extra points for letting us know right up front of the items that were not available. My wife has an incredible knack for finding the one item on the menu that is not available. Food arrived very quickly which is rare for a sushi place (hahaha). We hardly had time to get into the appetizers before the main course arrived. Gluten-free menu was greatly appreciated and offers many similar choices from the main menu. Only 4 out of 5 due to the noise. Since it was full, it was very loud. They could use some noise dampening in the open ceiling or drapes on the walls. Perhaps even some drapes freely hanging would help. As with any restaurant, your experience may vary. It sounds like the other reviewer, Michael, just had a bad experience.

I usually eat here whenever I visit Sandy, UT. The food is pretty consistent although the service isn't. They have a nice assortment of special rolls. Try the Executive Suite roll-tempura shrimp topped with tuna and drizzled with habanero and eel sauces. Shhh, I think they sprinkle crack on their baby back ribs. Yes, they're that good.

  • Joshua S.

after a few visits ambience A nice vibe. i like sitting in booths, and their booths are comfortable and insulating (cuts down on extraneous/excessive noise). service B+ the servers are hospitable. food comes out when it comes out, in no particular order, unless it's miso soup and rice, which the server serves up themselves. food B+ a few good kitchen items. average sushi. i really need to try more of their menu to make a better judgement. miso soup good solid miso. i enjoyed the addition of enoki mushroom to the standard tofu, wakame, and scallion. sunomono (cucumber salad) not bad. not special. just good. tsunami baby back ribs (basted in jalapeno teriyaki sauce) a 'must-order' item. perfect heat for my japanese palate (meaning, not too spicy). i always want the meat to be the hero in dishes, however, without the jalapeno teriyaki sauce, the baby backs wouldn't be as heroic as they ought to be. cococabana, buddha, and d.t.h. all decent rolls. the buddha is unique, and delicious because of the veg. the other rolls are good because the coco is full of deep fried shrimp, and the d.t.h. is fully deep fried AND doused in condiment. they may taste good, but they don't 'feel' good after the fact. overall: B+ so close to an A- that i bumped it up to 4 stars. not my "go to" place for sushi, but i genuinely like tsunami.

This is my favorite location. I love the decor and it's a pretty big place with very high ceilings. I crave Tsunami all the time, now that I live in San Diego, and every time I am home I make it a point to go back. I love love love the DTH roll, spicy and deep fried...SO GOOD. I could probably eat every single roll on their menu and be more than happy with all of them.

  • Aimee C.

My favorite vegetable tempura in the world. The coating is right, the frying is right, the sauce is right. I just really like it a lot. I think I will probably go to this location for dinner and see how it goes, but more than likely will stick with the Sugarhouse location. The service here (Saturday lunch, not crowded) was not anything to complain about, but not stellar. The biggest problem was the rolls, which are kind of important at a sushi place. They were loose and sloppy. All of them. Maybe they put the new kid on for not busy times? Who knows, but I didn't feel like the meal was worth the money spent. But the tempura recipe. Did I say I love it? Because I do.

Well.........It's been I while since I've been there but last night I ventured out to Tsunami in Union Heights. My friend and I sat at the sushi bar and were delighted with the custom rolls that Chris our sexy sushi chef (who knew Brazilians were so talented with their hands) prepared for us. I would recommend them all but they aren't on the menu! We also enjoyed some chilled Sake and Sapporo. The only disappointment was the cocktail menu! Please people make some effort to make some outstanding cocktails! Ok, so I am a cocktail snob! I know it and admit it but Tsunami could do much better than bastardizing a French 75 with a terribly sweet "blood orange" juice that tasted like an over sweetened Kool-Aid! In my opinion this cocktail should be called a French 86!!!!! Our service was good. Rebecca and Chris were personable and attentive. Overall a great experience. I do miss the former manager Salem and her friendliness but I will definitely return!!

  • Sabrina R.

Mediocre prices, food, service, and decor. Nothing is good or bad. Limited selection and the 2 for 1 deal is "secret" and I find this scammy. If you can always get special rolls 2/1, without a coupon, just write it on the menu.

Of all the tsunami locations, this would be my hands down favorite. I love japanese food but I have a hard time with sushi, I know I know! But I am determined to like it! So if you are not a fish fan and you want something sooooooooooo good. Try the Aloha roll wrapped with soy paper, honestly might be me new favorite food! Yay sushi! Finally!

We often dine at Tsunami. The Union Heights location is fantastic, good service and excellent food!! The River Park location needs some customer service training. The sushi is always good but the service is consistently POOR......SLOW and RUDE. We keep going back because we love the food and hope the service will improve but it just keeps getting worse. The management and servers don't seem to really care. After our poor experience tonight at River Park, we won't be back.

"We are creating our own health and lack of it through industrial agriculture, with its carcinogenic pesticides, insecticides, fumigants, preservatives, etc. We radiate our food. We eat out of aluminum cans and *eat out at restaurants that care not about our health.* We sit indoors most of the day and hardly get any sunlight which our bodies need to produce Vitamin D." I eat here because I've seen the owners feed their young kids here, regularly. It has the design of an upscale national chain but they feed their own family here on any given day of the week and at any of their three locations. I've also heard that their kids have severe food allergies. To me, this says that they have to keep a close eye on their ingredients and let nothing that is low quality or unhealthy slip through. Healthy food can be expensive but the real question we need to ask is, "Why is unhealthy food in America so cheap?"

  • T.J. S.

Had the best date here with my husband. Valet parking was great to have. Our waiter was attentive and when we asked for something he brought it in a timely manner. We sat at the sushi bar and enjoyed watching the gentlemen work their magic and make the sushi rolls. Our sushi expert, Zach, was amazing and made our experience one of the best ever. The rolls we chose were delicious and I felt pricing was reasonable. The atmosphere was calming even though the restaurant was crowded. I'm looking forward to going back.

Bomb dot com. Tsunami is hands down the best sushi in Utah. I'd go as far to say it's as good or better than what anyone is doing in the northwest as well. The food is amazing and the staff always treats you like family. We can't wait to come back and see Drew and Emily!

Sushi was great! Yummy!! Place is clean and servers are attentive. Good service. The Tsunami ribs was very flavorful. I really enjoyed my dragon roll and cococabana sushi!

LOVE.

I will not return to this establishment and I would encourage others to stay away!

sushi is one of my favorite foods and i'm always in the mood for some delicious seafood! both takashi and tsunami are my favorite for sushi in salt lake, but i tend to go to tsunami more often since they have multiple locations that are closer to me. i do appreciate that tsunami has a gluten free menu including beer and dessert! most of my favorites can be made gluten free and they are very accommodating with specials that i want to try. when in season uni and californian albacore are delicious! i also love their live scallops, but it's always a good idea to call ahead to check to see if they have an item available if it's a special since they tend to run out quickly sometimes. i usually get the negima with scallions, executive roll, jenny roll, various sashimi, and any specials that sound good. the bf loves the korean short ribs, ribs, and spider roll. the service and quality of food is pretty consistent every time we visit. they usually have a gluten free cheesecake available for dessert and ice cream is always a winner. one time i had passion fruit ice cream that they made in house and it was amazing! i still think about it and am waiting for it to return so i can enjoy it again!

  • Alexia H.

The sushi is about as good as you're going to get here in Utah. The service is somewhat disorganized and slow. A word of caution - watch your credit card billings. On two occasions the incorrect amount was billed to my card.

  • Melody G.

Tsunami has the best sushi and rolls in Utah. Ask for Cambrey as your server, she's the best!

  • Baxter D.

I've become much more of a fan of this place over time. The sushi selection is ok but I have liked every roll that I have tried to date and the Tokyo Cowboy is fairly unique. Additionally, the Chicken Katsu is well made and noticeable better than many comparatively priced restaurants.

    (5)

We love the executive roll and the Thai roll special. They are doing a lot of fun specials with Thai chilies right now, which is awesome for anyone who like a little kick of heat.

We always love the Jenny roll topped with a thin slice of lemon and the Executive roll which is a little sweet. We also like the PD...it has a kick to the finish in your mouth. Service is attentive and our glasses always stay full.

Just a quality dining experience. Good food, nice atmosphere, attentive waiter. We had a sirloin combo with sushi. Our little girl had the kids California roll combo which was an excellent value. I'm sure we'll be back & would recommend it to anyone.

  • L S.

This is the best sushi place in salt lake. Wait is always a long time. Our favorites are the coco cabana and executive suite rolls. Best edamame in town too!

Our team loves this place. The service is great. We love to bring our Realtors to lunch there. They are fast, efficient, and very polite.

Yes, they're that good.

after a few visits ambience A nice vibe. i like sitting in booths, and their booths are comfortable and insulating (cuts down on extraneous/excessive noise). service B+ the servers are hospitable. food comes out when it comes out, in no particular order, unless it's miso soup and rice, which the server serves up themselves. food B+ a few good kitchen items. average sushi. i really need to try more of their menu to make a better judgement. miso soup good solid miso. i enjoyed the addition of enoki mushroom to the standard tofu, wakame, and scallion. sunomono (cucumber salad) not bad. not special. just good. tsunami baby back ribs (basted in jalapeno teriyaki sauce) a 'must-order' item. perfect heat for my japanese palate (meaning, not too spicy). i always want the meat to be the hero in dishes, however, without the jalapeno teriyaki sauce, the baby backs wouldn't be as heroic as they ought to be. cococabana, buddha, and d.t.h. all decent rolls. the buddha is unique, and delicious because of the veg. the other rolls are good because the coco is full of deep fried shrimp, and the d.t.h. is fully deep fried AND doused in condiment. they may taste good, but they don't 'feel' good after the fact. overall: B+ so close to an A- that i bumped it up to 4 stars. not my "go to" place for sushi, but i genuinely like tsunami.

Restaurant is big and can accommodate large groups. Never had a bad meal here. Try the tsunami shrimp with extra sauce and the ribs, you'll be addicted! Fresh and yummy sushi.

Yay sushi! Finally!

Definitely a reason why I am a regular and never get sick of going. :) If you have never been i say you should go see what your missing out on!

This is probably the best and nicest location of all the various Tsunami locations. It seems more upscale than the other places. The food is consistent and seems to be pretty fresh. I've always had good service here.

My old stomping grounds. I "discovered" Escolar here so it will always have a place in my heart. They have a good selection of saki here, and a variety of fusion rolls. I like the Summer and the Montauk.
