I stopped by here tonight for some quick dinner. 7pm and there is only one customer there. I purchased my food. For almost 8 bucks without a drink for one burrito bowl it seemed a little on the light side. The worker barely put any food in the bowl. I remember now why I haven't been here in a year. The problem I have with this place is the food is the same price as the other Mexican grill places but you get half as much. So I guess I am still hungry after spending my adult sized dinner money on a child's sized meal.

Yet another order-your-burrito-or-salad place in Utah. They make it for you, then you take it to your table. I don't think they're as good as Cafe Rio, and I really wish Bajio was still around. But there really isn't a lot to choose from in the Highland area, so we go fairly often when we need something quick. It's a LOT better than fast food joints. My main complaint is that the don't have very good salsa if you order chips. Ask them for some pico instead.

I lived next to the barbacoa on 9th and 9th in salt lake and I've never had too little meat on my burrito from this place, regardless of location. Can't say that for all burrito places, *cough* chipotle. And the quality is as good or better as well. I get the sweet pork burrito every time and I know in advance that I'll love it and will also get full. I actually used to come here when I was on weight gain for my sport (good tasting food=no loss of appetite) reliably. I feel like they go out of their way to hire and train people to be friendly in a laid back way, which I appreciate. ie they don't feel like a big chain restaurant employee trying to squeeze every penny out of you or never give you too much of an ingredient.

Flavorless and overpriced for the slop they serve. The chips were soggy, the queso gritty and gross, my burrito as poorly made and nothing tasted good. Then, to top it off, one of the employees was sitting his butt on a counter where food and beverages are served. For those who say this is one of the only good choices in the area, keep driving. Anything is better.

The burrito I ordered was cold. I thought that was really weird especially since I watched them put it together. The Barbacoa pork wasn't that great. It was a large burrito but the burrito and drink cost me $11.60. If there was a costa close I would choose it over this place any day. They do have wheat tortillas and brown rice which I liked. Too bad it doesn't taste very good because it looks great.

The place was dead, at 7:30 PM on a Friday night - that should have been a red flag, when we walked in. The food was terrible! The "burrito salad" had very little lettuce - which is usually a key ingredient in a salad?!? The nachos were more of a soupy, sloppy mess of rice, beans, and some sort of cheese sauce. (Again, it was hard to find the typical key ingredient in nachos - the tortilla chips?!) They did provide a kids meal at only $.01 - not sure if it's a current promotion? In any case... I wouldn't recommend eating here. I think they were trying to mimic Costa Vida or Cafe Rio, but they didn't come close. There's not a lot of other restaurants in the area, but I will be staying clear of this place!

I am surprised this place is never very busy. The food is consistently good and tasty. I love the variety of meats-mellow to sweet to spicy. The pico and salsa are great. My kids love the kids meals and always choose this place to eat.

We ordered a kids meal (chicken and cheese taco) and a vegetarian taco for me. My 11 year old daughter said "I think school lunch tastes better than this)". She found a bone in her chicken after making that statement. So it went from bad to worse.

Always has good flavor. I love the barbacoa beef burrito. Big portions!

My wife took my 11 year old daughter here yesterday and now at 4am she is up with stomach cramps. She is crying in the bathroom. She got the chicken.

I don't like most of their meat. Only the sweet pork is edible. Unfortunately they are the only Mexican place nearby, since taco time doesn't count. :(

If you enjoy cold food, bagged lettuce and an eyeroll while ordering this is your place to go. Not a ton of option in the area so that is probably why so many enjoy this place- I recommend Costa Vida, Cafe Rio and Qdoba above this place.

Great location. Best burritos in Highland-Alpine. Steak burrito will feed me for a day.

The food is decent and the service is ok. But man, they are stingy! I like to get their burrito salad (with mango chicken, it is shredded and very flavorful), but it comes with VERY little lettuce. It is a salad for heavens sakes. Put more than 1/2 a cup of lettuce on the bottom of the bowl. I get the fajita vegetables, pico and meat on it. I say 'no' to the other 'complimentary' toppings of beans, rice, cheese, and sour cream, then every time I have asked for extra lettuce (a very small grasp with the tongs) I get charge $1 more. I get that I have to pay $1 extra for guac - that makes sense. But A DOLLAR for 4 extra pieces of lettuce, especially when I skimp on basically MOST of the 'free' toppings. It just aggravates me. No other Barbacoa location does it, but this one. Every. Time. Chipotle is better and has better value IMO.

We love this place. Has very healthy ingredients. We enjoy the burrito. We get a wheat tortilla, usally the pork and sometimes the chicken and load it up with beans, rice, the corn salsa and regular salsa (you can request both), we request the solantro and (almost) most importantly, ask them to MIX THE MIXIN'S UP. It says it on a sign that you can, but not many people do. It's so nice to have all the toppings mixed up if you know what I mean, so one bit isn't all meat and another is all lettuce... They have very good quality food at a very good price. We like to support these folks over cafe rio or bajo...! Check them out!

As for the build-in-front-of-you style burrito joints, this one is the best. I order the chicken burrito bowl with tortilla. The salsas are great. Meats are all good. They just taste... better, I guess.

This place is surely a step up from Chipotle but it is a long way off from Cafe Rio. The burritos are decent but their weak point is their tortillas. Their meats are flavorful but I am not sure about their honey sweet pork. Dude, that is some sweet meat baby. Their marinated chicken has impressed me though and has a decent flavor. Some of their burrito fillings are pretty solid especially their guac. Anyways, if you are living in the Alpine/Highland area this is probably your best option, face it though, your options are really only Wendy's, Iceberg, Dimitri's or that crappy Chinese food place behind Kohlers. But I guess that's why you live there, cuz you don't want to be bothered by them city folk with their 5-star restaurants and fancy clothes and such. For that matter, you probably wont even be reading this review because Yelp is pretty much completely dead here anyways. So why did I even waste my time with this review. It's because I have hope, my friends. It's the Obama era and everything. I have hope for a better Alpine. And yes, I will take that Nobel prize now, thank you.

Barbacoa has the best salad for a low carb high protein diet. Unfortunately this location is terrible. I've eaten here 3 times and haven't enjoyed it. Today their steak burned my face off! I've eaten at the Barbacoa downtown and I've never had a problem.

I probably like Cafe Rio better (they are somewhat similar).... But this place is super yummy!! And their free kids meal is way better than Cafe Rio's- a quesadilla or taco, animal crackers, carrots, and an apple juice- pretty hard core free kids meal! Definitely a very safe bet for when I want to stay close to home.

Barbacoa is far and away the best choice for quick eats in the Highland/Alpine corridor. Although not quite as inventive and colorful as some of the other Mexican-inspired grill chains, it regularly delivers delightfully fresh fare in a bright, clean atmosphere. The mango chicken is a wonderful new addition to their menu. The honey sweet pork is too sweet for my tastes. My regular fave is the burrito soup with a large dollop of guac. Would love it if they would add a dessert option (e.g., flan). Would love it if they would stay open a little later. If you're headed to the Alpine Loop or climbing in AF canyon and need some inexpensive and tasty sustenance on either end of your venture, this is the place to stop.

Very, very similar to Freebirds burritos.Big, tasty, fresh, and well made Mexican food. The regular barbecue meat dishes are great; however, I suggest you pass on the sweet pork. I'm not really sure why Utahns insist on dumping honey on their Mexican food ("Beehive State?" No excuse!), but it makes for a much-too-sweet dish. The fajita vegetables are a fabulous substitute for the beans. The rice might be a little soggy, which in turn makes tortillas soggy in short order. Eat fast.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
