Being from So Cal, Guads has it going on. Not fancy but good food with spice. Most of the others are sweet or flavorless - not here. If you like good mex at a reasonable price, Guads is for you.

So I have been going to Guads for some time, but haven't been in a while. I am sorry to say that things have changed, and not for the better. I started my meal as I usually do with the Honky Wings. This was by far the highlight of the meal. The sauce is sweet and spivey and the wings are well prepared. This is where the good food ended. I had the crab enchiladas that seemed extremely fishy. The taste was strong and bitter. My wife had a combo plates that just seemed to be covered in sauce and cheese to take away from the lack of flavor. For desert we shared a fried ice cream, which was nothing more then slightly below average. The service was decent and salsa was good, but the chips seemed stale. I may go back for the wings, but until they up their game, I will stay away from the rest of the menu. So sad to say.

Funny Place. I've been here more than a few times, and every time the service is good. Attentive, clean, really friendly and the staff aims to please. The food has good flavor. Moreso than most Mexican restaurants. But dang, the food is really salty. You can taste the flavor, once you get through all that salt. I loved the food, but drove home and drank a gallon of water the rest of the night. Tells me the recipes are good, but ramjet the rookie is back there with a salt shaker and he knows no bounds. Like, licking the Bonneville salt flats kinda good. They've been around 25 years for a reason. Worth a visit for better than average Mexican food. Fire the salt guy. It's *Almost* there.

I've been a loyal customer for over 20 years. Over the past 3 years the service and food has continually gotten worse and worse. I keep going back hoping they have improved! No such luck! With family in town visiting I thought let's try Guads. My family had good memories of Guads from years earlier so they were excited to go. What a disappointment! Very slow, very disorganized, all the employees seem lost. Took forever to get drinks. Probably the worse margarita I've ever had. Almost impossible to get anyone's attention to get ice water. Then the food finally showed up! Yuck, warm, not hot. Mushy mex with soggy tortillas. It was just not very good. A party of 6 and not one yum! After 20 years of eating Guads and getting gas, I probably won't go back!

Guadalahonkys just doesn't get it. I went a couple of days ago after swearing it off for years. A friend of mine was talking it up and I thought maybe they had kicked it up a notch. No, they didn't. I really don't understand why it has a following. I guess if I was to sum it up in two words I would say dry and canned. I guess the best thing would be the chips and salsa which are decent but it doesn't carry the day. I love beans and rice and, here, they are completely unsatisfying. This time I tried the chili Colorado chimichanga. With a meat burrito or chimi, you don't just cram a mass of meat in the burrito and deep fry it. Not enough sauce or cheese or fresh ingredients. If you are not going to go authentic, you'd better make it great tasting cuz you've already got one strike against. Don't go to guads. Go two more minutes down the street to la hacienda. Much more satisfying.

I love Mexican food.....so if you do too, I do not recommend this place. First of all what Mexican restaurant does not have cheese dip?!? The tortilla chips were stable and our waitress was very nice but too busy to focus on us. I ordered fajitas that came out like a plain stir fry. It had cucumber, cauliflower and broccoli in it...what! There was no seasoning on it at all. I sent it back and ordered chicken enchiladas. They came out pretty quick and were good, but still not a lot of flavor. My husband had a pork burrito. The eat was good but the burrito itself was over cooked and hard on the bottom.

  • Chelsea M.

Underwhelming. Waitress seemed exhausted and frustrated, food was bland (zero seasoning - pico de gallo is sliced tomatoes). I have a hard time believing a clove of garlic or a single onion dared grace their kitchen. That said, if you're looking for a bar with happy bland chips and salsa, it's conveneient.

  • Kyle R.

The mother-in-law recommended this place and now I know why. Bland & tasteless food that has really lost any semblance of what good Mexican food is. Rice was stale and bland while the beans tasted like something out of the can. Good sign of what to expect when they can't even get these right. Service was sub-par as we found ourselves looking around the whole evening for the server to get refills, napkins, etc. Feels like this restaurant has lost its way and is now running on autopilot with canned, pre-cooked, microwaved food. Have no plans to ever go back and agree with other reviewers that there are much better places to eat at in this area.

HORRIBLE SERVICE AND DISRESPECT I've been here a few times. The service in the Donkey tails section has always been good. But the service in the actual restaurant is never that good. This time was the worst and I don't know if I will ever go back. After we first got there my boyfriend asked about the military discount. So she said she would need ID. He showed her his driver license, it says veteran right on it. She said she didn't think she could take it. So he showed her his old military ID. She said she didn't think that would work she would have to ask. Never had that problem before, disrespectful. When we got our food we didn't have silverware, so we waited for her to come back so we could wave her down. She wasn't too good with refills. I know those are minor but it's like it was one thing after another. Then my boyfriend was drinking his beer and he had drank a lot of it when he noticed there was nasty crusted food on the inside of his cup. There was a good amount of food. So we waved her down again and told her. She said gross would you like another one. When we got the bill she had charged us full price for the beer that he didn't finish because of the gross cup. Then to top it off I got a gift cards for my birthday from restaurant.com . when we went to use it she said sorry we can't do more than one discount. How is my gift card a discount? Then she said that in order to use that gift card you would have to have an order that was twice as much as the gift card. So because my gift card was 25 I would have to spend 50. So I would have had to buy more food just to use the gift card. And we wouldn't be able to use the military discount if we paid with the gift card. Tell me how that makes sense. I will never go to the restaurant side again. I might just quit going to the Donkey tails side as well. We usually only go to the restaurant when we have the kids with us.

Everyone in my family didn't like their food except me. Everything tasted like it came from a can minus the shrimp. The shrimp tacos were really good and came with black beans instead of retried beans. We won't be coming back just for one dish.

This place is usually great. Today it is the worst I have ever seen as far as service. We have been sitting for 20 minutes with no-one attempting to help. Time to fire to manager, address the poor service, and fix it or shut this dump down

    (1)
  • Justin B.

Mediocre food. Lackluster service. Waitress told us they were slammed-the joint was empty-but they were expecting a party of 30. How is this my problem? Staff accordingly. Duh. Taco Bell is cheaper and tastes better. Will not return.

A good place for your Mexican food fix. It isn't the greatest but far from the worst.

    (3)
  • Kevin G.

I used to really like this place. But over the years, it is getting worse and worse. Tonight visit was lackluster and flavorless. The chili verde was watery and bland. The tortilla was soggy, and the rice and beans were disappointing too. The taco Al Pastor also was bland and unremarkable as well. To top off our cruddy visit the service could only be explained as "adequate", no emotion, no friendly interaction. We felt as if he really didn't even want to be there. Save your time and your money, and go somewhere else.

The wife and I decided to try this place out despite its low rating on yelp. And were not impressed. The food seemed over priced for what we received and was extremely bland. The environment wasn't very nice, the service was slow and impersonal. Do yourself a favor and pass on this one.

This place needs a little jumpstart and little I mean alot!,the food and service is nothing to be desired for, been here twice and the 2nd time hoping for a better experience,I've had the fish tacos and the fajitas respectively, the meats are flavorless and dry,the salsa tastes like a flavorless tomato paste, the chips are store bought, everything I had tasted like it wasn't prepared fresh,if this place wants to survive they should be using fresh ingredients and season the meats to perfection for starters, the service isn't very good either,I can't recommend this place at all

    (2)
  • Eleasa S.

Gave this place a try, not impressed. The staff was meh... And the salsa was like pace picante sauce. I will give them a thumbs up on the enchilada sauce, tasted homemade not out of a can. The shredded chicken tastes more like pork, reminded me of cafe rio, where the meat stews all day in a big pot. I prefer fresh chicken. Ordered a raspberry lemonade and pretty sure it was just Hi-C Punch. Blah. The staff also dropped 3 cups during our shall time there. Clumsy night. Probably won't be back we'll stick to a few others we have tried. Oh, and my chicken enchilada entree was literally the same size as the children's plate chicken enchilada, and double the price and no drink. Lame.

After visiting this establishment I left confused as to why so many people come here and recommend this place. The food is not good, the service is not good, so maybe it the atmosphere which was fine. The chips are stale, the salsa bland, the rice was DRY and old. I tried two entrees and neither was good. Honestly a microwave dinner would have had more flavor. We had to remind them of our appetizer while food was coming out. The guacamole was not fresh and clearly packaged. The staff only came back with the bill at the end. If you are looking for this particular style of food I would highly recommend other places particularly one very close to this establishment if you want to enjoy your meal.

Gluten free friendly, really good food. The crab enchiladas are to die for! I have never had bad service there, a tad slow on occasion but they made up.

Pretty good Mexican food. The decor is a little dated but we've always had good service here. Try to get a booth.

It's so-so. The chips and salsa are great but the food is just meh. If you go here often enough, there are things you can order that are not on the menu...particularly the build-your-own. Try it out.

I'm bumping my rating by 1 star because they deserve it!! Our most recent visit was easily 4 stars. The Chile Colorado was among the best I've tasted. My wife's chicken stir fry was fresh, yummy and had a nice kick. Grandpa's sweet pork burrito was excellent too. The portions are gigantic. The service has alway been good, every time I've eaten here. They have some surprises on their menu and I have never been disappointed.

  • Alma H.

One of my colleagues recommended the place. We went last night and it was not as great as we expected. Don't get me wrong, it was not bad at all, but not the best either. Mediocre food (bland) with the exception of their enchilada sauce. Staff was friendly and our overall experience with the restaurant was not too bad. I would not recommend it if you like spicy food :-(. Overall, not too bad!

no. never again. we went because this lady suggested that we try it. I don't know what I did to piss her off, but she's now dead to me. I try to be detailed in my reviews, but this time, I'm just going to try and block this from my memory, you'd be wise to do the same. taco bell has better food, the margaritas aren't anything to brag about, and I felt like I was surrounded by the type of people who frequent the golden corral. hells to tha mutha honkeys NO.

Another bad Utah Mexican restaurant. Head up the road to gualbertos if you want real Mexican food.

    (1)
  • Kyle C.

First off, this place is very, very gluten-free friendly and the service was fast. If that's important to you, bump this up to 4 stars. The food is solid, but not amazing. My only real complaint is that the pork in my dish tasted like it came from a can, but everything else about it was pretty good. On the brighter side, their complementary chips and salsa are great and they have a good selection of hot sauces. There are better Mexican places around here, but don't completely count this one out, especially if you have Celiac disease and live nearby.

Disgusting. Our meth head waitress was reasonably pleasant but way absent minded and the food was down right horrible! I've never had fajitas that bad in my entire life. Veggies weren't cooked, meat was cold and bland. My buddies steak tacos were nasty as well. The only thing Guadalahonky's did was give my buddy a case of the runs, good thing I've got a strong stomach!

This review is actually for "Donkey Tails" the bar on the side of the restaurant. I hear the food is good on the other side. So my review is primarily low because of the perceived low value for money spent. It was about $40 for six shots of fireball and three schteins (sp?) of Bud Light. That might not be so bad at bars in Seattle where I'm from, but since this is Utah, the shots are a measured ounce and it honestly seems like a sip of liquor. We sat out on the patio as they were doing karaoke inside that was too loud and too bad to be so close.

  • Lisa L.

The food is great. That is the only reason my rating is not 1 star. We used to go here to celebrate co-worker's birthday's during the lunch hour, but every time we went, the service got worse and worse. The last time we went, we decided it was the last. The waitress literally argued with my co-worker over his drink. It took them forever to get us our food. Too bad. I really liked the food.

This place wasn't exactly what I expected. Parking lot was packed so we figured the food must be awesome. It was just average Mexican food. But, great name. Oh, the parking lot was full because there was a bar next door.

Was not a good experience. Food made our entire party of 4 sick and the quality has definitely gone downhill!!

  • Tory M.

Don't go here expecting the best Mexican food. But then again, finding great Mexican in Utah is rare. But the food is good and during our most recent visit the service was fast and friendly. I'd recommend for a easy and decent Mexican food option in Draper.

I cannot recommend this place. Tasteless - bland food and mediocre service. Not the same place it was 10 or 12 years ago...

  • Rich L.

On the up side the place is clean and the staff is nice. Now the down, the chips were cheap and bland, rice and re fried beans were terrible! Usually when I try a white washed Mexican place I'll just get cheese enchiladas till I know the place is a keeper or not. These were probably the worst enchiladas I've had! Who knows, maybe if the cheese in the middle had melted it would've tasted better. My daughters taco had those big bready flour tortillas they usually use for a smothered burrito, It looked like she was eating a damn gyro! My wife was also less than happy with the boiled chicken meat in her chicken enchilada. I tried it and it tasted like duck meat.

The family decided to go here for a dinner and so we went. I haven't been there in over 10 years because the food was horrible last time and so I've never been back. While driving there I thought, "maybe it's under new management and will be better this time around." I was wrong. I got the Fajitas and they were terrible. Most of the people with us said their food was no good either. I wouldn't recommend going here!

    (1)
  • Sabrina R.

I remember the chips and salsa being good, and service being fast. The food was not memorably bad or good, just standard mexican fare, which in my book is reliably good in most of the US. There are just so many delicious ways to combine meat, cheese, rice, beans, and corn, and then follow it up with a healthy garnish of salsa, sour cream, and guac. Yum.

    (3)
  • Meg C.

I wasn't too impressed with my relleno, it was mushy. I basically just ate the pepper out of it. I've developed very high standards for chile rellenos since I started making them at home, so that that into account. My enchilada was fine. Our waitress was extremely perky and asked us if we had made any "delicious decisions" when it was time to order. It was borderline annoying, but then again it is a family restaurant. She was an attentive server, though.

  • Nick P.

This place has gone downhill big time. Used to be one of my favorites, but my last couple visits have been very unsatisfactory. The quality of food seems to have depleted, and the portions got smaller while the price stayed the same.

My family and I stopped by here for the first and last time on 02/10/13 about 12:30 pm. We were sat down and enjoying the salsa and chips that was actually quite good when i recieved the michelada that i had ordered. As i was about to take my first sip i just happened to see a fly floating in my drink. I made the waitress aware of this and she promptly went to get me a fresh drink. The next drink came, another michelada, and of course i inspected this one much closer as it arrived. All seemed well. I gave it a good swirl with the straw and brought it up to my lips and to my surprise another fly deeper in the glass. I brought this up to the waitress and asked to speak to the bar manager. The waitress came back and and explained that he was to busy to speak with me. There was also no manager on duty so my family and I left. I tried to call the owners the next day and was informed that the owners daughter Katie Hollingshead was there and she would go get her. The worker came back and and informed me that she was to busy as well. Throughout this ordeal I was calm and respectful and tried to use the most logical channels to get some kind of resolution. I requested nothing other than trying to insure this wouldnt happen again. An update... Katie finally called me back she seemed genuinely concerned and apologetic. We had a good discussion and I believe she will handle things appropriately.

Don't do it! Like my dad said, the staff was nice, but the food? Not so much. The chips were basically just the ones you get at the grocery store. My mom, who is the biggest chips & salsa snob on the planet, could tell from the start that coming here wasn't the best idea. The drink glasses were big, which I thought was pretty cool at first... but then I found out that it was, like $2.50 for a soda, and I'm pretty sure that they charged for refills cuz the total came to A LOT. The food wasn't the best, and I found some weird uncooked bean of some sort in my beef taco (which did not have beans IN it in the first place). The rice was spicier than I would'vd liked too so I barely touched it. (WARNING: TMI AHEAD. PROCEED WITH CAUTION AND KNOW THAT I DON'T USUALLY YELP LIKE THIS) Long story short: If you enjoy having a nice, long sit-down at the TJ Maxx across the street, this is a great place to go first. If not, La Puente isn't very far away and I recommend going there instead.

This place looks pretty authentic form the outside but buyer beware. There were no Spanish or South Americans that i saw in the whole place, I mean come on! The drinks weren't that great and the food was bla. I wont be going back thats for sure, how hard is it really to mess up Mexican...

Oily..oily..oily. Was here on business, and colleagues took me here. The name was a putter-offer for sure. I ordered the chicken fajitas. The food was super oily, and there was hair in my margarita They have a mandatory food with drink order The food did not taste all bad Still,it's definitely not Mexican food by any standards. The ambiance in the restaurant was depressing, with huge neon tube lights There are definitely better places to eat in my opinion, even in dinky Draper Just not my cup of tea at all.

Disgusting!!! The food here was okay the first time. However, I thought it was wierd when I asked for butter with my torillas and they didn't have any for use. Second spot since moving here that didn't have butter on the side. Ordered the fajitas and they are the worst I've had in my life. Why do they have squash with them. No one was in there either so that should've been the fist sign. Will not be going back and will not recommed this spot to anyone.

Mexican food done by white people... but somehow good! This restaurant is firmly in the Americanized Mexican food camp but it is good non-the less. The chips are decent but the salsa is fantastic! I have enjoyed all the food i have tried here with the exception of the chimichanga. They arent crispy, its very strange. Other than that, the food and wait staff are good and the atmosphere is dcent, if a bit hokey.

Despite the potential racial slur in its name, this place isn't too bad. We went when the wait was a little long, so we decided to eat in the bar, known as Donkey Tails Cantina. The bar itself was pretty small - there were only about four tables to eat at, which were also small. The ceiling is littered with dollar bills in a checkerboard fashion that have each been personalized by past patrons, so you have something other than the three flat screens to look at. While my friends thought that their food was fairly bland, mostly due to the poorly flavored chicken, I thought that my shredded beef and cheese burrito with chile verde sauce was pretty good. I ordered a virgin pina colada, which was pretty tasty. Pineapple flavored sugar decorated the rim of the glass, which was a nice bonus. Because of the fact that our server was also the bartender, there was a long wait for everything. He had to make all of the drinks for the restaurant, plus take our order and serve us. If you're going to go to Guadalahonky's, I think I'd recommend waiting for a table...the tables in the bar aren't very comfortable, it's a little too noisy, and the poor bartender likely doesn't want to make drinks and serve you at the same time.

We just moved here and wanted to find a good mexican restaurant. Not a Cafe Rio, but a place we could get a taco and enchilada plate with rice and beans. The food we found to be pretty tasty all around. The service was so-so. In fact, I don't remember seeing many hispanics serving food, either. Mostly older men, which we both thought unusual. But we went there for the food, which came fast and tasted good. The salsa was very good...and fresh, too.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
