When they first opened the place was TERRIBLE. They were packed all the time and all of the students at my high school (cy-fair) worked there, so let's just say the staff was very inexperienced. NOW, however, this place is awesome! It's never fully packed anymore and the atmosphere feels so much calmer. The staff no longer has anyone from my school and they all look 20 something or older lol. I go there all the time and order one thing: the frisco melt! Recommend. All there burgers are awesome though and there $3.99 combo deals on some of them are a bargain. I've never tried there shakes so I don't have a say in that area. This is the place to go if you want better "fast food" then the mcdonalds, sonic, and burger king nearby!

Oh sweet hamburgers, what the hell happened here? I have visited many Steak-n-Shakes along the East Coast (I would say I am quite the familiar fan of them) and none of them were as bad as this one. None of them. It is as if some red-headed stepchild of Steak-n-Shake arrived in Houston at the local Greyhound station sporting nothing but a hobo stick and bag and was told to go open a franchise and that "we'll be back for you later, kiddo." I would like to also state that this is wholly not representative of the quality that is what a Steak-N-Shake should be. The meat here is overcooked, the shakes are not made with the thorough care and love one would normally find. In short, this is the single greatest disappointment of something in existence since Sarah Palin. Fries = soggy (in the bad way) and everything on the menu tasted horrific. Let me say, in no uncertain terms, that giving this two stars would have been no justice. If there was a 0.5 star, then hell, I would have chosen that in a heartbeat. There are not many things that folks north of the Mason-Dixon line or along the right coast line do well, but this is one of those that clearly is. This is not, again, the Steak-N-Shake I know, in any way, shape, or form, and I certainly hope for those travelling outside of Texas at least give those a chance - this one tastes like it is owned by somebody who couldn't afford a franchise license for a Golden Chicken.

Balls! Balls! Balls! This place gets one star because its a suck fest and I have to give it something. It gets another star because even though the place sucks, they know how to manage it. My waiter sucked. Didn't ask how things were, didn't seem to care that we looked absolutely miserable, didn't wait on us worth a darn. It was horrible. We ordered a patty melt. It COULD have been good, but I guess if you are making your patties out of "steak" you cant be bothered to use any in quantity. At least they use respectable bread on it. The chili is weird, good but weird. They add extra chili sauce whatever that means, and without it, it would taste like wolf. Not "a wolf" but Wolf brand chili. Worlds smalled and most tasteless patty ever. The melt came with "2" patties, yet didn't come close to being the size of the bread. No, they don't stack them on top of each other. They offer premium sides... I changed out fries for a cup of chili. It cost me over a dollar. MmmmMmmMMm Wolfy goodness.... We went up to pay, grumbling all the way, poor food, poor service.. and I still cant figure out how we took the last table of the place. The manager was playing cashier and earned this place an extra star. He was the first person to ask how the food was. I told him I would have rather flushed 7 bucks down the toiled. He crumpled up my receipt and told me I didn't have to pay. And then we had a lengthy conversation about why I felt that way. In this conversation I learned this places makes SEVEN patties out of ONE POUND of meat!! WTH!?!?! No wonder everything comes with deuce patty on it. What a joke. But then, he gave me the secret. He said he usually recommends people add at least an extra patty because they are only like a dollar and change. OH! OH OH OH well there ya have it! My crisis could have been averted. I could have had an 8+ dollar experience for a patty melt and chili. HA! I wont be back. Ill continue to get my patty melts from waffle house with a side of Bert's chili, covering some hash browns. And Ill have change, great service and a big ol smile on my chili eating face. FAIL steak 'n shake. (I don't acknowledge the need to capitalize your letters)

Without sounding like a Yelp snob, I never yelp about fast food. HOWEVER....seeing a this is the only S&S in Houston, I have to represent. I went to Indiana University, whose business school is named after the person who founded S&S. I spent many a late night sobering up with friends, fries and fake cheese sauce (a huge guilty pleasure) in my college days. Fast forward four years later...I had heard a rumor that they were to open a S&S here. Seeing as I am an inner looper, I couldn't understand the location they'd speak of. One fateful day, I drove out to a friend of a friends home off of 1960 - and before my very eyes - A STEAK 'n SHAKE. Like I said, I spent 4 years getting fries w/ cheese alone from this menu. Their fries are thinner than any other fries you've seen, but they still manage to stay crispy. And when you dip them in cheese sauce - well, things get a lil crazy. This past Saturday late night, I had the luck of trying the Wisconsin Buttery burger - OMG. ONE OF THE BEST FAST FOOD, NAY, ANY BURGERS I'VE EVER HAD. Mushrooms, grilled onions, and cheese on a thin steak patty - so simple, so delightful. I'm so thankful that it's far away from me or my doctor could be easily concerned for my health. My friend and I made a pact that no matter the situation, from now on, if we are ever on that side of town, we must stop and split this burger. Steak N Shake, one day Houston will understand all that you offer 24/7.

How could I forget to review this place!? Ok this review is pretty late but I remember it pretty clearly because it was my birthday. The food was good, the service was good, the prices were good! Open late is always great! After a little meet at Absinthe Brasserie and a little party at my house... come 4 AM people were drunk and very hungry. So about of 9 of us crammed drunkenly into someones little explorer. The one sober guy drove. We screamed, we sang, we hung out the window and freaked out other cars at stop lights... And then we finally arrived at steak N shake My first experience was good. The waiter was super nice, and pulled tables together for our group. He tolerated us and... That was a big deal. I kept screaming at him that i wanted a steak.. blah blah steak is in the name blah blah false advertising. I was drunk and thrilled (21st birthday) He laughed and kindly explained that they're steak burgers... no steak on the menu. I ordered the original double n cheese with bacon and cheese on my fries. The meal was delicious, but not great. The price made it worth it though! I will say that their buns could use some work. I also had a taste of a shake which I must say was yummy I loved the 50's atmosphere of the place. When we finished and paid our bills, someone started asking if we could have paper hats like the waiter did... Sure enough, he brought us some goofy paper hats and we were off.. to go pass out =P It combines aspects of fast food and diner with a fast food restaurants price. I'm definitely a fan of Steak n Shake!

Gotta admit that we've only been here late at night, but it's always great! Food is good, cheap, and the staff is always friendly and prompt! Lots of places could learn a lesson or two from this place.

LOVE the shakes here, but nothing else.. I had tried the spaghetti chili mac 3 way - thinking it would taste something like Cincinnati chili? Please avoid it like the plague.. lol

Eat here and get food poisoning!!!!I used to love Steak and Shake and it pains to write this but since Steak and Shake has not followed up with me like promised, I feel I owe to the greater good to let people know my husband and I got horrible food poising from their sliders!! We threw up so much we had to go to the ER and were dehydrated becasue we could not stop the throwing up... We missed 4 days of work and my husband was not able to eat a real meal for 11 days. We let Steak n Shake know they called us, I was super nice to the owner, didn't want him to feel bad for something that wasn't his direct fault, but he told us they would take care of ER bills, and never a follow up, I have emailed them several times and no response.

Super greasy, bland, tiny food. The only thing worth while at this restaurant are the shakes.

Fresh burgers & shakes made to order. Open 24 hrs & offer 1/2 price drink specials weekdays from 2-4:00 & kids eat free on weekends. Very reasonable prices. Stays busy! For breakfast - all you can eat pancakes for $3.99.

First of all, I am under orders from Mason and Moxie to never get anything from this place again. I can only go to places that serve enough to provide leftovers, and this pathetic meal had none. I had the Frisco melt, shoestring fries, and a vanilla shake. The shake was OK, not at all reminiscent of the milk/ice cream saturated fat delights of real shakes. Beck's Prime's shakes come to mind there - a frosty cold vanilly confection of flavor with more saturated fat than one of their bacon cheeseburgers. If I'm going to consume unhealthy levels of fat, I want flavor with it, dammit! Shoestring fries - year they were real shoestring, and came in a neat standup cup. They managed to be oily, tasteless and underdone all at the same time. The illustration for the Frisco Melt shows two grilled/toasted slices of bread with two steakburgers, cheese melted over them, some dripping of Frisco sauce. The reality is two pieces of buttered bread that look like they were grilled/toasted but are as soft as regular bread. Hidden inside were two tiny steakburgers, the sparest hint of cheese separating them, and the Frisco sauce was soaked into the top slice of bread. The burger covered about 65% of the bread acreage. For those of you who dislike vegetables, a wilted piece of lettuce and two slices of the tiniest tomato I've ever seen grace a fast food sandwich were provided. The lettuce and tomato were laid on top of the sandwich, a nice touch if you don't like that stuff. The overall impression of the sandwich was a hint of cheese, steak and sauce with a lot of bread. If I was next to one, wanted a quick gulp for food, it's OK. I wouldn't go out of my way and there are plenty of other, tastier and less pricey alternatives. And BTW Steak N Shake - lose the stryofoam sandwich container! If you're gonna sell a mediocre product, might as well use paper, the stryrofoam isn't preserving anything worth saving and the paper's more environmentally sound.

I'm not one to give a bad rating based on one experience, and I definitely am not doing that here. I have been to this location at least 10 times. Everytime there is something wrong with at least one person's order in my group. The service used to be okay, at best, unless you could catch one specific server who was just awesome. The last few times we were there she was in the kitchen. They have difficulty making eggs the way you order them. The last time we went in for breakfast, they made my eggs 3 times, and they were still not done. I finally gave up. On our most recent trip, we waited 10 minutes for our drink order to be taken. Then we waited another 10 minutes for the drinks and to get our food order taken. It took 25 minutes to get 2 kids meals and 2 burgers with fries. Then, we made the mistake of ordering shakes. We finally got up to leave after 15 minutes, and then they brought the shakes out. A man came around asking why we were upset, and we explained everything to him. Nothing was done. They didn't say anything to the servers while we were there. They were all still standing around visiting with each other. I know it's a lower priced burger joint, but the last time I checked, the servers should still earn their tip. If you choose to go here, just know that you will be there for a LONG time, and the service will most likely be bad.

I'd seen these in other cities. The name alone is what tempted me to give it a try. Steak n Shake. It still gives me giggles, but the giggling wanes once you've paid for a meal here. It wasn't bad I guess, but it was teetering on bad. The burgers are deflated looking. They remind me of the "Where's the Beef?" campaigns. I enjoyed the cheese fries and the shake was a shake. The place is nice inside. I was expecting it to be just McDonalds looking, but you get a waiter and everything. So it's like McDonalds, with a nicer interior and a waiter. The managers are attentive and apparently getting paid enough to care. The drones that take your order, however, may not be getting paid as much. Anyway. If you're curious like I was--give it a try, but don't expect much.

I have been to this Steak & Shake for multiple times since it opened and have never been disappointed. As for the other reviews, I think they were working out the kinks last summer. For fast food establishment, it is quite nice inside with a 50's feel--lots of black & white, tile and chrome. I've had some of the same waiters during my visits and they are very attentive. I just took my family of 5 there today and the bill was $34 including 3 shakes. It was 12:30 on a Saturday and packed. We had a wait but they turn the tables over fast. We had a great waiter that was wonderful with the kids. The kids even get a Steak & Shake paper hat with their menu. The kids can upgrade their drink to a shake for something like 33 cents--won't see that at Jack in the Box. The shakes are more like homemade shakes so they don't have the machine made/flavor the way JINB and MCD have. I don't drink shakes so that isn't my bag. For me what makes this place different is the service and the food. The patties are thin but juicy and have crispy edge to them that I love. They have multiple meal deals for $4. You can get a double with cheese, fries and a drink for $4. I've never been there where the owner is not at the register working or working the front counter. Everyone has always been friendly and the service is great every time I'm there. Give it chance with reasonable expectations and I think you'll like it.

This place is a fast food joint trying to be a restaurant. If you added waitstaff to Burger King, you'd have Steak & Shake. Except Burger King has better food. I walked in and was greeted by ......... no one. I stood there for a few seconds looking confused. If was my first time in a Steak & Shake, and I finally went up to one of the staff and asked if I can sit anywhere. She grabbed a menu and I chose a table. I looked over their steakburgers and decided to try a grilled chicken sandwich instead. In addition I had a small garden salad and a glass of water. The salad & water were delivered at the same time. I prefer to have my drink first, as I sat waiting for over 5 minutes and I was thirsty. The salad looked liked it should be on the kid's menu. All the vegetables were diced, except the grape tomatoes. I get suspicious when you're dicing my vegetables up. Besides, I'd like to know what I'm eating besides diced bits of green & white. The salad dressing came on the side in a small plastic cup, filled halfway. I asked for more and received another one filled halfway - which was fine since that was all the dressing I needed. Try filling that cup up 75% next time, then I won't think your being skimpy. The chicken sandwich came out, and I thought - that's it? Boy was this thing small. I think it only took me 6 bites to eat the thing - and I was trying to make it last. The food here is ok, but I probably will not return. Total cost for the meal was $5.42 with $1 tip, and I felt the price was in line with what I ordered. However, I'd rather spend a dollar or two more for better quality food and double the portion size. Do yourself a favor and check out the many other better burger joints in Houston.

I have heard a TON about this place. Everyone i know has been to one somewhere in the United States and thinks that it is the best place to eat late at night ever. I went with my husband one night just to check out this food heaven. I wanted a bowl of soup, and they didn't have any, so I ordered their classic chili. I was very disappointed. I wanted something warm, hearty and that would fill me up. The chili was none of these these things. The service was very slow, I know we went late at night, but if you have a 24 hour restraunt you should have staff 24 hours. I think the only thing really redeeming was the carmel apple shake. My husband got one and it was very good. It is a limited time thing though. I would go again, but it doesn't live up to the hype of all the other ones in the US in my mind.

The shakes are great here. Tonight I ordered a banana/mocha combo for the very first time. They twice told me that it would be out soon. Once when they brought another shake to my table and another time when they brought our food. Unfortunately my shake finally got to my table after I had already finished my meal. I sent it back because I was pretty full at that point. As the servers request, I told the guy ringing us up that the shake arrived after the meal. His response was "that's understandable." Are you kidding me?

Great concept and the kids that work there are sweet for the most part. I can't get over the portions though. Not really a value. Chile cheese fries are good. But always double up on your burger patty. It's worth going at least once to dine in.

First off, this particular location is NOT 24/7. Other than that, food is incredibly inexpensive. Service isn't the fastest, but the waitstaff has always been courteous - busy or slow. The best part however is the half price shakes now from 2-5, but it is weekdays only. Also, if you join their rewards, know as of today (5/11/15) they don't have QR codes and you can't pay from the app to count towards your $5 gift.

Service is great and friendly. Food is at par for this type of establishment although I personally don't care for skinny shoestring French fries. Despite the fries, the food was fresh and tasty. My boyfriend had the Royale Burger with Chili Cheese fries. He enjoyed it. The chili had beans in it which I thought was weird for fries but he didn't seem to mind. I had the Portobello Burger and found it mostly acceptable. The shakes were quite good. The bf had the Chocolate Covered Strawberry and I had the Side-by-Side Orange & Vanilla. Both are recommended. The atmosphere is typical diner decor which is not a problem but the whole restaurant needs a cleaning. Staff was sweeping to at least maintain the appearance of cleanliness but there was food under nearly every table, the air vents had dark lint hanging from them, the floor is slippery in some areas and sticky in others. The air is stagnant and the music is downbeat country. Overall, it's affordable and decent but the management needs to address the cleanliness issues.

yelp said they were open 24/7 but no. the manager literally said they haven't been open 24 hours for "several years now." He was certainly a D|CK about it, but I totally understand why. If I saw 3 handsome young men coming in at 11:50, I'd be pissed too. They didn't even want us to wait inside for our food. So we waited in the rain. When the lady came out with our food, I explained that yelp said "open 24/7" and she let us know that Jeremy needs to fix that because she gets cussed out every night in the drive-thru because of it. Jeremy is obviously the problem. she sounded like a pissed off stripper. #ALLFACTS

I guess I'm going against the grain on this one. Where do you go on a weekend night when everything else is pretty much closed for some reason? Oh, I must add, everybody eventually gets tired of IHOP, Denny's and even a drive to Katz downtown. The answer is..............you go HERE! It's cheap, has a decent selection of.....burger stuff, well lit and pretty well kep.....at 2 a.m. They've added a few menu items since I last reviewed this fast food server type restaurant and I swear this is another one of those reviews that Yelp sniped out for some reason. Could you guys please stop doing that? It takes time for people to make these reviews just to be deleted with a click of a button. There is plenty of parking and the lot is clean as well as the restroom.....sort of. Get the burgers, get the shakes, get the Parmesan fries they're really great! Bring your son, bring your daughter, bring them all for the burger slaughter.

We have eaten here in the past and it was good but it is disgusting in this restaurant. Dried ketchup on the window shades. Greasy floor covered in trash. Tables covered in grime. As we were leaving a waiter asked me if everything was ok. Told him it was dirty, he seemed to not care will not be back here.

OK I love there food so much but I always have some sort of issue here, I get my tenders undercooked, order wrong, or waiting incredibly long, a lot of times the employees don't listen or don't show much of care if u need anything. Again its so good tho

Wow. I have driven by this place so many times and never thought to stop. My husband, my dad, and I went today and I was seriously impressed. The burgers were out of this world, maybe the best burger I have had! They were juicy and tasted like a handmade patty. The one complaint about the burgers were they were a little on the small side. The shoestring fries were good, but the onion rings were just OK. It seemed as if there were frozen. You can get about 4 different meal deals for under $4, not including a drink, but I got a sweet tea for $1. We got the Original double with cheese. If you want to sub onion rings for the fries, it was about $.59 extra. But I would recommend the fries instead. The shakes were amazing as well. We shared a Mint cookies and cream shake which was really good. All in all an excellent place for a great old timey burger. I will definitely be returning.

The best thing about this place is that it's 24 hours and serves sweet tea. I actually gave them an extra star just for their sweet tea (I miss being able to get sweet tea everywhere like in the "original" South). It's a cute, retro-type atmosphere but the food quality isn't very impressive. I wish I had great things to say about Steak 'n Shake but it's really all around mediocrity in all aspects. The service, the food, the creativity. They have a good amount of shakes (flavors named after candy bars and fruits) but honestly, I'd rather go to Sonic. The food reminded me of Sonic as well. Prices are decent with many meals right under $4. I don't think I'll be back unless I'm hunkering for a cheap fish sandwich at 2 am.

Ummm...the burger was small :( but good. I didn't appreciate the cheese being on the burger when I requested no cheese, but I lived with that. So, it was kinda good. Next time I'm in Texas I may be back =)

Another childhood favorite finally come to Houston after I've been here, oh, 30 years or so! My best friend (who also lived in Tennessee for awhile) was just as excited as me to see a Steak 'n Shake being built so close to us. Not excited enough to cry and hyperventilate like I did when I found Krystal's, but giddy-with-anticipation excited, no-tears version. The excitement was not necessary. We decided to go through the drive-thru on a Tuesday night. There were five cars in front of us, and several more parked in the lot, so Steak 'n Shake was definitely busy. The guy who took our order was either very confused or didn't understand speech. He told us that burgers did not come with sides. According to the website, you get a choice of fries, onion rings, salad, fruit, soup..........but he said "no, no sides". Not even fries? "Oh wait, uh yeah, you get sides". After the most confusing exchange ever since I tried conversing with an 80 year old woman who was deaf AND non-English speaking, we thought our order was complete. What we ordered: two Steakburgers with cheese, a Frisco Melt, two fries, one onion ring, three shakes. What we got: two Steakburgers with cheese, a Chicken Melt, four fries, an onion ring, and three shakes. Honestly, after everything we went through just to order, and considering we weren't charged for the extra fries, we opted to simply go home and eat what we got. Our grand total, by the way, was $32. Yes, $32, for three basic combo meals. Once at home, I was comforted by the fact that at least my food would be good.........except it wasn't. The burger was smaller than expected. Much smaller. And not all that tasty; I'd say it was more greasy than anything. The fries and rings were good, better than they looked. The shakes were just meh. Not horrible, but not good. Jack in the Box and Sonic make a better shake, and both are right by Steak 'n Shake. I suggest going to one of those. You'll sure as hell get a lot more for $32 at either establishment. *sigh* So disappointed. At least I still have Krystal's.

ok first of all i was very spectical about this pace so me and my wife finally gave in and went to eat dinner my wife ordered the 4 piece chicken strips w/ fries and i ordered the 2 meat burger with cheese and added chilli and cheese to my fries at first when we got the food it looked good and since the first time i ate there i ahve been coming back because the food taste good love the seasoning they have for the fries first night i went the service was great our waitor was fast and curtious but the secong night i came it was a full house and our service was slow and our waitor was slow to attend us that was the only thing i complained about that night the food was great and the price was reasonable and at the end of the night my wife suggested to the managerr that cashed us out that the women's bathroom needed more paper towels we received out receipt and the manager said since you guys were so nice customer's they gave a free glass cup to take it home us really nice green glass cup with the coca cola logo on it very nice of him to give us the cup well always come back to eat here love he food and service but watch out dont do when thee is alot of people because the service it's slow but if it doesnt bother u then go for t would recomend this place to family and friends

This place is not bad, however there's also nothing really amazing about it. The burgers are kinda small. I'm not a big fan of the thin patties. The fries are really thinly cut and you can get stuff put on them like parmesan & herbs, chili & cheese, and salt & vinegar. The shakes are OK. There's nothing spectacular about them, but they aren't bad. The only good thing about this place is that it's pretty cheap.

I like this place for late snacks. The service is quick and friendly. The food is decent. This place gets 5 stars because you will not find better burgers for that price. The coffee is not recommended The fries are good depending on the cook

Just moved into the area so I thought I would check out this place. Since the car spa was next door so I got my car wash and decided to eat there so I can have a burger while I wait for my car wash. First thing the service was amazing and Kiki was really nice and sweet. I was new so I asked extra questions about the food and how it worked there since it was my first time. She was very attentive and brought refills quick and checked on it. However the food was not that great. I ordered the mini hamburgers and fries. The patty was horrible and crispy and burnt. Other burger nacho one the party was in 5 little pieces, and the other party was thin and crispy. My sister garlic burger was ok she says at that time. The manager was nice and took my food and did a refire. And when it came back it was so much better. So I decided to order burger Togo and a vanilla shake. Kiki was really nice and took my order and again made sure everything was good. Got my food and brought it home for my husband. Then my sister felt sick and realized she got food poisoned and was ending up at the toliet when she got home. Then after sometime I also ended up with a upset stomach. I know you guys are probably thinking why did I give a 3 star if we got sick. Well the waitress was super nice and was really go. It is not her fault the kitchen and cooks are bad. But I do recommend the health department checking out the food.

For a cheap, delicious burger, outstanding fries and milkshakes made the real way, you just can't beat Steak n Shake. They even have waiters. The service has always been courteous and the place has always been clean. One piece of advice, eat in and skip the drive through! The fries are thin and I'm not sure how they would be by the time you got home. One more piece of advice, the chili is good too! Steak n shake is not fancy, but it is unique and the burger's are good enough to crave every now and then.

Look, I know it's a fast food joint with 'waiters', and the prices are super low. However, when you sign up to do a job or work somewhere, you should DO YOUR JOB. I've worked retail for many years and my husband was in the food industry for over 10 - no excuses. My mom, son and I arrived around 2 o'clock on a Sunday afternoon, well after the lunch rush. We were immediately seated and the server did appear quickly to take our drink orders. Great. Off to a promising start. He then came back to take our orders - 2 apple pecan cranberry chicken salads and a large French fry. Easy enough, right? 30 minutes later our food finally appeared, along with the server, who hadn't checked on our drinks (2 year olds plow through a box of apple juice very quickly, people..) My salad had 0 pecans, but I was too busy handling my restless kiddo to care. We were not checked up on the rest of the meal. The food was average - boiled chicken, wilted lettuce, the standard French fries with NO seasoning. It took a manager shuffling around the restaurant for us to get our bill. We made our way to the front, and everyone at the register disappeared. After standing there for almost 10 minutes, we turn around to see 4 people, 2 of which were not designated bussers/servers, cleaning up a table and laughing and talking. One finally looked up to see that there were a few people that would have liked to pay and finally came up to help us. We were so mad at this point that we just told her off and got nothing more than a 'sorry, have a good day'. Pathetic service, pathetic food. This place was awesome when it opened years ago.

So my BF and I decided to try Steak 'n Shake tonight for the first time! We are huge FIVE GUYS fans and let me just say that we went in with an open mind that we could be very disappointed... So I make the very short, 2 mile trip and I order via drive-thru a basic double meat cheese burger w/fries and vanilla Coke float (BF's meal)! I ordered myself the Jamaicanjerk burger w/fries and a Hersey's Special Dark Chocolate shake! The staff was friendly and the overall drive-thru wait was about 6 min. When I got them home and we dug in, they were surprisingly juicy! Very flavorful and still hot! The the patties are thin and the buns were soft. Overall we thought Steak 'n Shake was pretty darn good and very reasonable price wise! I am sure we will have a repeat visit soon in a few weeks!

The only reason that I go to Steak n Shake is for PANCAKES!!! They have the best pancakes. They are light and fluffy with a nice scent of vanilla. I definitely recommend them for breakfast!

This is short and sweet. My husband wanted to try this place. His reaction: If you want lettuce on cardboard go, if you don't, don't. You can pair this with his opinion that the condiments overpower the Whataburger and that he thinks BK has the best flavor for fast food burgers. If you agree with his taste, stay away.

Lint was found in the nacho cheese on the single hamburger. The bacon burger had grease on the bottom bun. The tea tasted bad because of the water used to make it. Sometime between eating the burger and drinking my tea, something lodged in the back of my throat. I called to request a refund. The manager offered to refund just the cheeseburgers with the cheeseburgers. I won't be going back.

This is where my husband and I meet for lunch at least once a week. It's cheap, fresh and delicious. Although, today's experience left something to be desired. Nothing against the food, but against our server. He wasn't very attentive and didn't care too much that we asked to sit at a different booth than what he recommended. Just not very friendly at all. Our usual waitress was there and I made sure to tell her that we will request to be seated in her section next time for sure. Anyways, about the food....I had the Portobello mushroom and swiss double burger with fries and my husband got the regular triple burger. We've never been let down regarding taste, however the bun tends to fall apart pretty quick. I don't mind though, the flavor makes up for it. All together our ticket was $13.07, you can't beat that anywhere. We will definitely be back.

Always enjoyable. Especially with the half price milkshakes. I had the Jamaican Jerk Burger with a vanilla coke and finished with a peanut butter banana shake. Mmmm mmmm mmmm. Tasty.

Fries...love the fries. Burgers are okay. The patties are thin and juicy...but the emphasis is thin. You have to get the double to find the meat. But they aren't way overpriced and for the cost of the burger you also get those fantastic fries! I lived next door to a Steak n Shake my last year of college and have a soft spot in my heart for the franchise. But for some reason I remember them being so much better. This is not the Steak n Shake of your youth... The service was 100X better than the first time I went here right after they opened. So that was a positive change. We were sat right away, served right away and checked on once. We never were offered a refill on our drinks which was kinda sad. They put so much ice in the drinks two big gulps from the straw and it's empty. And the tables were bussed fairly quickly - which was not the case the first time we stopped in right after opening. Look, it's open 24/7. It's decent burgers...the toppings (lettuce, long sliced [pickles, mayo, mustard and the usual suspects) are plentiful and fresh and the meat is juicy. The shakes are pretty thick and they have decent flavors and special ones throughout the year. They do have different sides you can choose like their little tiny bowl of chili. But the fries are the reason to come here. Really. I've given this location a double take and still find it just average.

First time here & it was really good & pretty cheap! You can order Parmesan & herbs on your fries & I believe they have 2 other seasonings you can add to them. The burgers come plain so remember to ask for any condiments or veggies to them that you want. It's a sit down inside and a waiter takes your order & brings your food so that was a big plus! It's also great for kids, they can eat free on the weekends. Overall had a great time, I recommend, & we will be dropping by again!

Back in the day you know this was the spot. When you could take your Pop's wheels and pick-up your lady after practice, meet with the gang & play 'Cooley High' all over again (w/o the tragedy). Nowadays its too much of the same. These chirren want wi-fi and flatscreens instead of funny hats and checkered floors. No really there's an element here that eludes to its history and one could imagine a time when it was "the" Steak & Shake instead of "a" Steak & Shake. Hot dogs and burgers is what i crave some days, very few days, but i can't get them from here. Though close to home and priced fairly it's just too greasy! If this were the 80's i could use the paper the burger's are wrapped in as a du-rag for my Jheri-Curl. The skinny fries could be a plus as opposed to the natural-cut-formerly-known-as-the French fry, even the waffle fry, but they're greasy like Sunday morning... or the song goes 'Easy Like Sunday Morning'... well, whichever it is it's waay too greasy. Shakes and malts are delighted by my beloved wife, and filling. They can best be consumed alone w/o anything holding terretory in your tummy; unless you're filming the sequel to "Super Size Me."

There needs to be more Steak 'n Shake locations in Houston, because this place is phenomenal. This location is about 15 minutes from our house and not something we'll go specifically for, but if we're going to the outlet malls or The Showboat Drive in, we'll get some Steak 'n Shake while we're at it. And it's open 24/7 so we can go ANYTIME. But really, thank god it's not closer, because I would eat here all the time and gain about 50 pounds. The service is super friendly and fast. We've sat at the bar once, enjoyed full table service, and also utilized the super efficient drive-thru (which does have a limited menu). In all instances, the service was above average. The managers are particularly great and more than happy to fix any issues you have. The food is just great. Big, juicy burgers. Crispy fries. Creamy shakes. Try the Hershey's special dark shake -- it is served with whipped cream, dark chocolate chips and a cherry. My favorite burger is the Western BBQ burger and my husband enjoys the Jalepeno Crunch. They also serve Dr. Pepper and sweet tea and this Texan really appreciates a Yankee institution offering these southern staples. The price is really what gives Steak 'n Shake an edge. This is Smashburger or Five Guys quality at McDonalds prices. You can get a standard burger/cheeseburger, fries and drink for $4-5. Or you can get a jazzed up specialty burger, fries and drink for $6. The shakes are where they get you -- prices start at $2.99 -- but I totally think they are worth the splurge.

The burgers and Fries were good. I wish the fries could be of thicker cut. My sister ordered a shake and said it was good so I will take her word for it. The place appeared nice and clean with friendly staff. Honestly I think the burgers and fries could be significantly better.

I had the worst experience ever about 2 hours ago. I was there with 4 other people, 3 of them ordered 3 shakes, and then my boyfriend and I ordered a burger and a shake at the front because we all wanted to sit outside and enjoy the weather and peace and quiet instead of sitting inside and having our order taken. So the guy tells us to sit inside and wait to take the food outside ourselves, which is fine even though normally a server would bring the food and drinks out. We had no issue up until about 20 minutes pass by and people that ordered after us are getting their food. This is when we start wondering what's going on... Finally we ask where our shakes and burger are only to have the guy tell us that they've been sitting in the back because he doesn't have time to grab them. How about asking someone else to bring it out so we don't have to drink our melted shakes? It was absolutely ridiculous and that's not all. My burger was not even done yet, and when it came out, it was cold. YES...it was cold. I was so mad at this point that I got such bad service that I would probably never want to experience that again. It was not that busy for them to have any type of excuse and there was plenty of staff for that matter. Not to mention that when we first walked in there was a family waiting at the door waiting to be seated and no one helped them so they left. So this was my experience, and I will not recommend this place to anyone.

For the price, this food's excellent. I paid for a family of four to eat under 25$. However, the fries are frozen and I've definitely had a better burger. Still not bad for the price.

I like that it's low cost. The servings are normal sized too. I left satisfied, but not too full. The shakes were good. The chicken sandwich and chicken fingers were your basic processed products, so don't order chicken or salad when you come here. Stick to the burgers. The buns are fluffy and good. I like the super skinny fries. The ranch dressing is chemically, no good. But overall, good burgers, and cheap.

I pulled up tonight around 1am and the doors were locked. The company website states this place is open 24 hours but the door says open til 2pm. I pull around to the drive thru and the menu light was out, indicating they were closed. Get it together. If you close earlier than you advertise, fix the advertising.

You just can't beat the price for what you get! I always get a double guacamole burger! The fries are thin but good and plenty! The shakes are great! A step above fast food at family-friendly price!

I have been here many times. And we'll , to be honest, it can go either way. May be good, may be bad. That seems to depend on your server. So good luck and say a prayer it all goes well.

Definately one of my top 5 burgers. I got the Royale steak burger and a butterfinger shake. The royale steakburger was a double steakburger(though i upgraded to a triple meat) with melted american cheese, hickory-smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. All topped by a delicious fried egg. I wasn'tto sure about the egg at first but it gave a amazing new flavor that i have never had on a burger helping to give it an original taste.

I've had many conversations with different friends about favorite burger joints (whether fast food or sit down) in the Houston area. I think I just found mine. From the stories I hear, I've always thought Steak & Shake was some gringy fast food restaurant similar to something like Hartz or Frenchy's. Yea I was dead wrong, and thank you sweet baby Jesus I was :D It's a sit-down AND fast food place...how convenient! I opened the menu and literally sat there taking in all that fatty goodness...just from the pictures!! There was so much variety! AND IT ALL LOOKED AMAZING! I got the Royale Burger that had an egg stuffed in it that came with my favorite kind of fries. You know those dingy skinny fries at the bottom of the bag? Yea, basket full of those! If you like them potato wedge-like filled, sorry buddy you won't find them here..but still a must-try! The shakes. A whole other story. My mint chocolate cookies & cream shake is something I will now turn to on my gloomy days. Sorry Ben, sorry Jerry. You've been replaced. I've post a pic of the generic milkshake menu taken from my instagram account. Left it a little blurry so that you all will have to make the trip to see it for yourselves!

The burgers are good, but just a little bit small. I would be willing to pay more for a bigger burger. The fries have a good flavor but again are cut just a little too thin for my taste. On the night we came, we sat in the drive-thru for an abnormal amount of time, so I was not impressed with the efficiency.

I come to this Steak 'n Shake for a quick meal and usually I sit in the restaurant than do a drive through. My sit-in experience is not too great being that most of the time the food takes more than 40 minutes to come out. One experience I came in alone, and waited over 45 minutes for a single burger. It's safe to say that majority of the customers here want their food faster than 45 minutes. The waiters rarely check up on the tables, most of the time I have to ask for water. I've only had one experience with a good waiter, he was tipped accordingly. The waiter/waitresses moods really affect the ambience of this restaurant. With my experiences the moods of my servers were always negative, of course except for one experience. The most painful experience of all would have to be the drive through experience. I don't know if it's the time of the night I want food or whatever it is. I would usually stop by around 10-12 to pick up a meal to eat and the service was terrible. One experience I ordered a burger on the rush to get to where I had to be, the burger came out quick and placed the bag in the passenger side. I arrived at my destination only to find a mess in the bag. Let's say the cook wanted me to put together the burger myself. All the internals of the burger were scattered and the bread was very soggy. Another time would be when I ordered 3 patties of meat instead of 2 in the "Bleu Burger", only to find 2 patties stuck together inside the burger. The drink was also the wrong drink. Maybe this Steak n Shake shouldn't be open 24 hours if they can not function within the 10pm-12am hours. 2 out of 5 stars because the food is still great when it is served in a proper manner.

I still an not sure what to think about this place as I want to get beyond the service concept they have. S&S is kinda like a diner but also has a to-go and drive thru? It's confusing. Cool think is they have waiter service. Bad thing is they can seriously mess up a cheeseburger and fries. What up? Not sure I'd try this place again when I'm venturing around Northwest Houston.

There are few places that illicit charming memories of my childhood in Indianapolis as wonderful as Steak 'n Shake. We used to go every week--the real cuts of beef squished into wafer thin steakburgers served with french fries so thin and long we'd swear we needed a double order just to make sure we had enough. Not much has changed at Steak 'n Shake--I've eaten at over a dozen different locations in four states. The corporate challenge of maintaining the look and feel of each restaurant lies in the history of Steak 'n Shake itself: to deliver a great experience, delightful food and consistent service from location to location. This location--Houston's only one for now--is no exception. The cleanliness here is top notch. The service was perfect and as standard as anyone would get at other locations. The food is made in their open grill just like they did it when I was 10 years old. The biggest deal breaker for people are the quirkinesses that make Steak 'n Shake so different from other fast food chains: the fries are like long toothpicks and not served with salt, the burgers are very thin, spaghetti dishes are served with mild chili toppings (try the chili three-way), and the oversized milk shakes (big enough to be called Texas-sized) are made using real milk, ice cream and mixed in old fashioned makers--nothing comes from powdered anything here. If Marvin Zindler were still around (and he is, in spirit) he'd love this place. So give it a try, and remember that this isn't Carl Jr, Wendy's or McDonald's. You're eating over 75 years of something remarkable.

Second time here. Second time very good. This time I got the Cheesy Steakburger. It is wonderful when you order an inexpensive burger and it tastes way better than you expect it too. the teenagers got the Burger Royale with 3 steakburger patties, bacon, fried egg and who knows what else. They loved it!! Shakes were not as thick and cold as last time, so I think I will skip the shake the next time and just concentrate on the wonderful burger. Just know the burgers are small, so you need at least two patties, which are thin but very tasty.

THE SHAKES ARE AWESOME. Food is par at best and service always seems crappy. This place is part of a fast food chain and it is soon to open a new location in Katy. Like most of your fast food places, Steak & Shake features your a-typical drive thru. Unlike your typical fast food restaurant, you will walk into this joint and be greated by a grumpy host and hustles to a seat. You REALLY can't expect much from the waitstaff. They are working for tips at a fast food joint after all. The middle aged men act all pissy like they have PMS and are quick to blame others. It seems nobody is happy with anyone else that works there. Again, FAST FOOD JOINT. Your best bet is to try the drive thru. You can bypass the PMS attitude by chilling in your car with the radio playing. The reason I keep coming back?? THE SHAKES ARE AWESOME... like I stated before. I went a few days ago and I got the Special Dark Chocolate shake which was amazing! My students got Mint Oreo and Banana Split which are both winners. I must say that I was highly impressed with the banana split milk shake. It is made with creamy banana ice cream, and at the top, there was a generous amount of strawberries and hot fudge. YUM!

WHOA!!! Are these burgers & shakes blessed by Jesus?!! Imagine your mother's best homemade burger x 10 and Whataburger's vanilla shake x 5 .... what does that equal? Steak & Shake's super fresh, super great, burgers and shakes! Now only if they can build a location in the Galleria ...

Steak and shake??? More like steak and puke! Well I used to love this place... Until Thier sliders caused both my husband and I BAD food poisoning! We were told our emergency room bills would be covered but they only returned a phone call and never returned the rest.

OMG! I didn't realize S & S made it's way down to Houston! I used to crave their food late at night when I was in the DFW area. Recently, I was visiting some friends out in the Katy area and they told me that there was a new Chuy's out in the burbs so we went to check it out, 2 hour wait... Gave me options and one of them was S & S!!! I WAS LIKE REALLY?!? DON"T PLAY WITH ME!!! The service is super fast. The menu seems a bit limited, but still has the classics, patty melt, double, etc. Have the thin cut fries. And of course the shakes! If it wasn't so far away I'd be here all the time. Cheap good food.

I may be a little biased because I grew up in the midwest....but this was great. I had the jalapeno burger (can't remember the official name) and it was awesome. It had 2 patties which is the way to go at SNS because they're pretty thin. I like the thin patties though because with more surface area (relative to overall volume) comes more flavor. I also had a chocolate shake. It was nice and thick - if you don't like thick shakes then you wouldn't like it. The service was great and everyone was very friendly. Actually, relative to the price of the restaurant that's probably the best service I've had in a while. Speaking of price, pre-tip it's about the same as what you would pay at McDonald's. It's in a different world though in terms of food. I had In-n-Out about a month ago (and several times before) and I'm actually surprised to say that SNS is better. Legitimately better, which kind of shocked me. In-n-Out may have SNS beat on fries, but the burger and shake title goes to SNS. To sum it up - great food for the money. I'll be going back.

It was a moment of weakness, but I had a casual fast food burger for the first time in a long long time. I can't compare it to much, but the fries were good, if that helps. The atmosphere was a little retro, the server was friendly. Does that help? Just an odd experience for me. Probably will stick with my typical sandwich for lunch.

  • Dawn F.

Pitiful! Stopped in to grab a quick burger - no such luck! We waited while they cleaned a table, then waited 15 minutes to place our order, then we waited over a half hour for our food - we were very close to walking out. The only thing we didn't wait for was the check - it came out with our food! Our shakes were delivered after our food. 30+ minutes to make 3 shakes?! Worst part is the place wasn't even busy. There just isn't a focus on customer service there. I will NOT return - there are just far too many other options in this area to waste my money or time there again.

This is my 2nd time at S&S and just as I had figured out before, its just okay. The meat needs some seriuos seasoning done to it! Smashburger smoles S&S's buns when it comes to flavor--hands doooooooooown! I am curious to try their hot dogs before I say happy trails to going to S&S anymore, but I will not go out of my way to go to this place.

The food is a complete joke! their shakes was suppose to be well known? really? hmmm I rather go get some blue bell ice cream, pour milk and blend it myself than try their shakes again. The food was complete trash actually I'm pretty sure if I was to find the right house and dig through someone elses trash and found some food it would be better than this place. Their prices and portion is that of a food truck but unlike a food truck it lacks flavor. I wouldn't recommend anyone eating at a steak 'n shake.

  • Christy D.

I like this place! I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. Yes, the burger patties are flat, but it's their trademark. I usually get a melt when I come here. A flat burger patty makes for an excellent patty melt...mmm. The pepper jack melt is particularly good...sourdough bread, pepper jack cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato. Not sure if their burgers and such didn't come with fries before because the menu now states that they do. They are simple skinny fries that are tasty. Prob not the best fries ever, but comparable to the ones from other fast food places. They also have "steakdogs" aka hotdogs, which, I tried the Chicago style one with sweet relish, onions, mustard and peppers and it was pretty tasty. They do have good shakes too...you can get some with candy bar bits like snickers and butterfinger or oreos...yum! Whenever I've gone here, the service has been good, although there was the one time they refused to let us put tables together or pull up a chair and the end of a table for a group of people, so we had to be at separate tables across the place. Kind of awkward, but they must've needed the room to be able to get around the tables with ease or whatever. I'm sure you can get a better burger elsewhere, but I think that for the amount of food you get and the quality/taste, the prices are definitely reasonable. I'd recommend it if you're in the mood for a diner-style meal for a good price. Oh, and they also have a drive-thru.

this is absolutely a great place to come for a good burger and a great shake....and the best part is the prices won't break your bank!! - I first tried these while living in Chicago and thought it was a pretty good burger place....then one day, while driving on 1960, i noticed that they were building one there and just could not wait to take my family there for a nice burger dinner. Keep up the great work SnS!!

Best fast food burger in Houston. But you have to order the triple. If you don't order the triple you may not he satisfied. The meat is very flavorful and juicy. I get the triple with cheese with nothing but musterd, ketchup, blackpepper and tomatoes. That's all you need. Yum is all I can tell ya. No other fast food spot can beat their real steak burgers.

Went here when they first opened and they were suffering from the standard mad crowds that any new restaurant in Katy undergoes. Wasn't impressed on that occasion but to be fair they were totally slammed with an inexperienced crew. Tried again for lunch a few days ago and was much more impressed. The place was about 80% full, not totally over subscribed like before. I was greeted promptly and politely and escorted to a seat at the counter. I ordered the standard fare of a cheeseburger, fries and a shake. The shake came first and it was about a foot tall in a frosted glass - delicious! The burger and fries arrived soon after and it was a nice messy, cheesy, meaty burger on a nicely toasted bun. Shoestring fries were okay but they lose heat rapidly due to their size; may try O rings next time. The waitron kept checking back to see if I needed anything, so marks for good service.

Great burgers, shakes and service. I've eaten here several times and really liked it. The only negative would be their chili cheese fries. I really don't like beans in my chili.
