I hate to say this but Lucy's dropped the ball big time this past sunday. The chicken was so over cooked it stuck in my throat. My wife and I both ordered the chicken and waffles, Jesus it was disgusting. Neither one of us could even finish it. Thank god the bar tender was sweet even though she had to juggle our drinks, bar back drinks, phone orders, while the hostess and two waiters stood there twiddling their thumbs. This place needs better management.

I'm not a fan of either fried chicken or oysters - the basis for most of the menu - but I thought I'd try Lucy's because it's in the neighborhood. Besides, good fried chicken is good cold the next day! I checked out the menu online and was intrigued by the deep fried deviled eggs so figured at the least I'd get them to try. When I went in the special for the night was a pork cutlet sandwich, which I chose over fried chicken. The sandwich was great, as were the deep fried deviled eggs. Actually, the eggs were amazing and I would have them again! The french fries that came with the sandwich weren't very good - soggy and looked to be the leftover tiny bits of potatoes. You can get better fries next door at Hat Creek Burger. The service was good. I don't think that I waited too long but the staff most have thought I was because they made sure to check on the status of my order. Good service will go a long way. I'm glad I took the order to go because the restaurant is far too loud. I don't know what it is with places blaring music but it really needs to stop. I'm not adverse to returning but this isn't likely going to be a regular stop for me, mostly because of the loud music.

Thanks for getting me sick!!! I will NEVER come back. Unfortunately I came here not by choice and would NOT recommend this place to ANYONE. I ate like a quarter piece of that really nasty chicken boudain. What is in that thing anyway?? That's not real chicken isn't it?? It tasted nasty and never thought that by eating a less than half of that thing would make me this sick. You guys are irresponsible for serving something like this!!! I have NEVER gotten sick at any restaurant in the world and you guys should be ashamed!!! ZERO STARS

I thought the fried chicken was really good but not the best I've ever had. The sides were delicious. The collard greens are whats going to bring me back and the Mexican Coke sweet mashed potatoes were like a dessert. They were extremely busy so the service was a little dodgy. I'll try to make my next visit at a slower time to see if there's a difference. Overall, I'll try it at least once more.

Decent fried chicken, with a nice crust, but sometimes slightly over salted. It would be nice if for once Lucy's served me an order of chicken and every piece was the same temperature - it typically ranges from room temperature to can't-hold-in-your-hand hot in the same basket. Completely unimpressed by the sides, but we thoroughly enjoyed the banana pudding. The bar is acceptable, but the drinks were a tad expensive for 5:00 on a Tuesday afternoon - no happy hour? One more bitch: I'm getting tired of the rustic, barn-like decor that is so prevalent in restaurants these days. It's too dark, and doesn't seem clean....but, three stars for the chicken and pudding, and underwhelmed by everything else about Lucy's.

Amazing!!!! Visiting Austin from out of town and found this place based on Yelp reviews. We were looking for great chicken and waffles and we found it!! Amazing!! Topped with bacon marmalade. The grits with cheese...yummy! Nothing bad here. Alex the server was super great! Wish we could come every Sunday for brunch!

I am a big fan of the original location, so I went and tried the one at this location. The chicken was good, but the side dishes were terrible. Mac and cheese was water and gross. Collard green was under cooked. I would be careful ordering them next time.

Bad experience. Expensive veggie plate ruined with too much salt and the manager handled our complaint very badly by ignoring our request that we not have the plate replaced by another full plate of the same and giving a very wimpy discount on the platters ( x2) that should have just been taken off the bill.. Dry Chicken, slow service rounded out the experience. No plan to go back. Real disappointment

  • Christine N.

Just had Lucy's for the first time. So disappointing! The chicken was very dry to the point of almost been inedible, so I just ate the crunchy battered parts. Other reviewers have mentioned this issue too. I thought maybe since we went late on a Sunday it had been sitting under warming lights for awhile. But even those parts were very bland- fairly devoid of seasoning. The slaw was the opposite- spicy but with no subtlety or deep flavor. The potato salad was ok but the onions and celery overwhelm it a bit. No intentions of giving the place a second chance, when not one of the 3 items we tried were memorable.

I don't know why you folks are hatin. I dug it. I thought the chicken was delicious. The watermelon frozen rita is really damn good, and the mac and cheese was the best I've had in town. Seriously. Service was sweet and fast. Had the "lizzards" for apps and they were damn good too. Only one star off because it was pretty pricey..... Maybe I shouldn't have had the ritas. Anyway, I say thumbs up.

What a cool place. Started with a dozen oysters on the half shell... fatigued with the whole local gucci oyster trend I was glad to see fresh gulf oysters at a price lower than pearls. They were fresh served in every way proper- in the own juices on mounds of crushed ice and full of flavor...no dime sized thrown into the mix, well worth the price. I was tempted with other menu items but had the fried chicken that comes as a basket with all the quarters. I have no use for breast meat and the waiter graciously took my request for all thighs...they were awesome...true southern fried chicken served with ice cold beer. The jalepenos were incredible...they make their own and it shows...crisp and flavorful. Im always complaining that all the old Austin haunts are gone....this isnt old but it feels like Austin. Great service and care for detail...can't wait to go back.

I try to only make good reviews but this place was mediocre at best. Service was ehhh, I was charged $2.50 for tap water and it seemed like she didn't care. Chicken was ok, nothing to really brag about. I probably will go to Golden Chick when I have a chicken craving.

Oysters: Not the best I've ever had but ok Drinks: We had the Juicy Lucy and it was pretty good as frozen watermelon goes Chicken: Solid, not over breaded, good flavor and cooked very well Fries: Fresh cut and lots of em' good season salt too. Jicama Slaw: An excellent side choice with a unique flavor Sweet Tea Pie: This was my favorite part of the meal. I love my grandma's lemon chess pie and this was just a wonderful twist, loved the salty crust! Service: a little slow and unorganized but ok

I wanted it to be great. Chicken is perfectly cooked, batter is bland and over-salted. Service was outstanding. Price was high. Oyster chowder was excellent but, expensive.

I'm a fan! It has great atmosphere, cocktails, and the food was quite good. The fried chicken was crispy and delicious, and get the horseradish grapefruit vinaigrette if you order a salad. The only thing that didn't wow us was the diablo oysters, which were just ok.

  • M A.

Lucy's is pretty good, but I wasn't blown away. I ordered the chicken and waffles. The chicken was good; however, I was disappointed to find out that the chicken was not boneless, therefore making it very hard (if not impossible) to eat on top of a waffle. You end up having to eat the chicken off the bone, and then eat the waffles more as a side. I tried a few bites of two of my friends' dishes, and although good, I didn't find them amazing. We all agreed everything was a bit overpriced, too. Service was good, though. I might try this place again in the future, but it's not at the top of my list.

First day opened and I think they did a really good job. I have never been to the South location so no idea how it compares. I had the mac n cheese which would have been even better if it was just a wee bit creamier but overall was one of the better interpretations in Austin, the cornbread muffins were a miss - dry and not a lot of flavor (but I think corn bread is one of those very particular things), the drink I has was great (tarragon lemonade) and the banana pudding was to die for. Service was attentive and friendly. Lots of things on the food menu (and drink menu!) I want to try and this will definitely be a regular neighborhood stop for me.

Thank you for opening another location away from South Congress! Just as good as their original location with a better atmosphere. Can't wait to go back.

  • Allen G.

OK, I am torn with this review. It is for the Lucy's on Burnett, NOT the Lucy's off of South Congress, which gets a 3 star. For some reason, the chicken is night and day different between the two. I have been to both twice. The first and second time to the Burnett location were two consecutive days, and the coating was crisp and form and the chicken just marvelous and juicy. Tried the South Congress location twice due to it being far more convenient. Crispy stuff not as well coated, not as tasty, and the chicken not as juicy. Don't get it. Not price sensitive, just tastiness sensitive. The two are inexplicably far apart.

Oh how I love my Chicken livers let me count the ways! Yes, Delish! I loved it. Crunchy and then when you bite down you get that soft wonderful smoothness of the liver rolling on the tongue. It comes with a sauce but eh, I don't need sauce with it. The deviled eggs was interesting. I'm glad I got it but now that my curiosity has been satiated I'm good. The eggs are actually seasoned and then covered and fried. The sauce that came with that was good but I didn't think I needed it. My Chili was good and if you order it just know it's a slow burn, no beans and you may want some water or something if you can't handle the heat. Sodas and spicy foods don't really mix. Finally my fried chicken was very simple. There didn't seem to be a lot of seasoning on the chicken but it was really tender and juicy. Hubby had the pork belly which was good from the bite I had and I don't know if they add stuff into the basket but we found a bit of chicken in with his onion strings which we didn't mind so much and even that was good. Experience was wonderful and the food was plentiful. Dog friendly and staff was on point.

This was some great fried chicken. First time here, but will be back. They have a lot of interesting stuff on the menu, but just had the chicken basket this time.

Lucy's is casual and laid back with a yummy array of fried goodness and a nice amount of Texas beers on draft. Went around 7:30 and there was a wait for inside for a party of two so we sat outside at the large picnic tables. Always a fan of communal seating. It was a brisk night, but they have heaters so no problem there. We ordered the fried deviled eggs, the chicken nachos, the chicken salad and chips appetizer, and the banana pudding. The banana pudding was my favorite part. nom! It's served in a small mason jar perfect for two people to share. The chicken nachos looked eh and my friend said they were ok. They were so massive it was daunting to even look at them. How anyone eats that and then follows up with an entree...not sure if I would be impressed or disgusted to see, maybe a little of both. The nachos should be shared by at least a group of 4-6 people as an app. The chicken salad and chips was tasty, but also large enough to be two meals. Waitress was super nice and very attentive. Service was quick. Not sure this place deserved to be on the 50 best restaurants in Austin list that just came out, but its a pretty solid joint.

I am from the Heart of Dixie and I know my friend chicken. Lucy's on Burnet is doing a good job. For some reason they did a better job than the SoCo location. I didn't want to go back there because it was very greasy, but the Burnet Road location is doing it right. I'm not crazy about the sides, it appears to be some Texas twist on traditional Southern Soul Food that I don't care for but the fried chicken is pretty good. The location is good, too. I am pleased to see the Burnet Road area growing fast.

Oh my the fried chicken was amazing. They have great craft beer on draft. And have awesome specials. Highly recommend.

Second experience was not as good here with a party of four. Service was A+ though. Fried chicken nachos were messy looking and served with fake store bought guacamole on top (the kind that is squeezed out of a plastic bag). Cheese was almost nonexistent on this appetizer. I make better nachos at home. My friend ordered the macaroni and cheese and thought they were OK. Not the best I've ever tried either (just not that cheesy). Two individuals ordered the spaghetti chicken - a huge disappointment. Not good or even homemade like - big bowls of overcooked spaghetti noodles. Stick with the chicken at Lucy's!

I was so excited to come here because there's nothing like pounding margaritas while inhaling fried chicken on a Sunday afternoon. Let's start with the chicken: for $9.50 you get 4 pieces (wing, breast, thigh, and leg) of decently fried chicken. The breast is tiny, and the entire basket is NOT worth ten bucks. For $3.29 you can get 4 pieces of (dark) fried chicken at HEB. The basket also didn't come with sides. The chicken itself was decent but I don't care for dry, white meat so I didn't eat much of the breast. They also only offer a limited selection of margaritas: you can either get the frozen watermelon, or a house margarita on the rocks. Onto the cornbread muffins: didn't have much flavor.. in fact, it was pretty dry and didn't taste much like anything at all, even thought there were slivers of jalapenos or something in it. The basket came with a side of tequila butter, which made the cornbread palatable, but I had to slather it on each bite to enjoy it. The only cool thing about this place is that their happy hour is from 11-7 every day. I enjoyed the seasoning on the chicken, but it's not worthy of what they're charging. In fact, I can't even remember what it tastes like, just that it was good.

We've picked up a bucket of chicken now and then for picnics, but this was the first time we sat down for a meal. First off, the service is speedy and friendly. Second, the atmosphere is nice, jukebox and all. But most importantly, even moreso than the fabulous fried chicken served at just the right temperature and the mashed potatoes with gravy that are spiced and delish, is the mac and cheese. OMG. I could have stayed all night eating troughs of the stuff. I'm a huge mac and cheese fan and try it everywhere I can, but this one is top notch. Oh, and the chicken is nice too. Definitely try the chicken.

I'll keep it short and sweet. Fried chicken livers are legit, and super nommable. Fried offal is offal-ly good!

Excellent dinner! Shared a bucket with wife, son and sister- in-law. Had Mac and cheese, potato salad and corn bread muffins as sides. Everything was great but the star was the chicken. Skin was fried goodness but never got in the way of juicy tender chicken.

Very cute decor and outside seating area. Our service was as good as possible as it was very busy and our waitress was totally busting ass. We ordered the fried chicken nachos which sounded good in theory but the execution was off. They were covered in way too much spicy pickled veg which is very tasty but totally overwhelming flavor wise. Tuesday nights are steak night and since we'd covered fried chicken I decided to try the steak special. It was a chicken fried steak on a bed of mashed roasted potatoes with a whiskey gravy and a fried egg on top. The breading for the chicken fried steak was good but spicy however with the creaminess of the potatoes it worked. The gravy was unremarkable and the egg was an interesting addition but all in all this dish was too much at once. It was seasoned HEAVILY with fresh dill and chopped celery greens. To be honest it overwhelmed the whole dish and just made it all seem kinda strange together. Bummer. I wanted to like it....I'll eat anything. But it was kinda gross. I gave Lucys 3 stars because I think its got potential. I wish I would've ordered one of the cooked oyster dishes because they looked very good.

I am from Kentucky, and this is the best fried chicken I've ever had. The sides--especially the collard greens are savory and amazing. The oysters are fresh, and delicious, and the vibe is fun. Definitely the best, affordable meal in Austin.

We've eaten lunch, dinner and snacks here. Their desserts are amazing. We're now hooked on fried kale because of this place. Their fried chicken is plenty good and crisp, though I found it a bit bland. Their oyster dishes are very tasty. Very happy to find Thirsty Goat amber ale.

I love fried chicken. I love that I can walk 3 minutes outside my house and get some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. Lucy's Fried Chicken is truly a 'sometimes food'. Its zesty, hearty and made with love. Great place to bring out-of-towners and for a quick date night. If you're in a rush, you may want to order to go. While I'm not normally a big side fan (just a preference), I always recommend the deviled eggs. Yes, its totally over the top to eat chicken AND the egg in one sitting, but hey, when in Rome, right? Okay, I'm done with the cliches. Just head on over to Lucy's with a group of your nearest and dearest, split a bucked and some eggs, and you're friends will trust your taste for life

Welcome to our neighborhood! Great service and good ol' fried chicken. I really loved the vodka drink with basil in it. Can't wait until it's cool enough to sit on the patio! Does anyone know if they have plans for live music?

As far as I'm concerned this menu is mouth watering. We love this place. We have tried quite a few things, but can never get away from ordering a basket of chicken. Your also aloud to order A La Carte, which I thought was extremely clever. This restaurant has a "theme" and the food flows so well with it. Don't come here if your on some kinda diet, that's no fun. This is the kind of place you come to a few times a month and go all out. This is gourmet southern comfort, done perfect. Treat yourself to the best fried chicken you'll ever eat, not to mention a watermelon margarita. Dessert? Yeah that rules too.

Oh my! This place rocks! Great service and the food is just out of this world. Sunday brunch is is the best in Austin. Great food at moderate prices. Granted, I have not tried everything on the menu but have never been disappointed by my choices and tastes of my sweetie's choices.

Love the fried chicken but has the most uncomfortable chairs and annoyingly narrow tables. Dissapointing collard greens... too much vinegar overwhelms the flavor.

Wow, ok. I went here on an acquaintance recommendation and was not impressed. The folks there were super super nice including the bar tender who takes your to go order at the bar. The extra star is for him. We ordered to go, the chicken bucket, a quart of mashed potatoes and a quart of cole slaw along with a "recommended" sweet tea pie which ended up being the highlight. A whole one. The chicken was horrible. You can get better at IHOP. I know fried chicken and there were a few different vintages in the mix. The mashed potatoes we ok and the gravy that you have to buy for $1.50 extra was about a a cups worth but it was pretty good with a hint of beer or something interesting in it. The cole slaw was lousy. Seemed half and half carrots and cabbage with little more than mayo as a dressing. Not great. I'm pretty well-to-do but if you are on a budget, beware. The bucket of chicken, potatoes, slaw and pie cost? $86 plus a $10 tip which I happily provided for the great caring people. Lastly on a good note is the pie. It wasn't perfect, but it was good. It sports a homemade crust and overall seems homemade but it was either made very early in the day or the previous one. I don't know if I'll ever bring myself to try Lucy's again but I'll keep an eye on the reviews. If they go over 4 stars, I may. To the nice staff at Lucy's, it is what it is. Sorry y'all.

I'm a fan of the Lucy's on SoCo, but this location is wonderful too. Lucy's is almost always busy, but I did't have to wait as long at the Burnet location for our bucket of fried chicken and my favorite cornbread muffins with the tequila butter. Mmmm. I also loved the way they decorated this one; bright picnic tables outside, and glowing neon lights and Texas treasures inside. Need more cornbread muffins in my life. The only thing missing? Sriracha sauce, but I may just need to start carrying a bottle in my purse.

The noise level made for a miserable dining experience, especially when I think the bartender kept upping the volume of the music! Loved the south location and thrilled at the news of the new location. But parking was still an issue, having to park two blocks away on a week-night. The chicken was good, as were the sides (smoked potato salad and turnip greens), but because the tables are narrow, we had to juggle the small dining plates and serving containers all through dinner. All in all, do take-out if you want to pay their prices. Skip the eating-in experience unless you like to shout throughout your meal and not hear what anyone at your table says and balance a plate on your head!

So, so disappointed. Honestly the only person at our table who almost finished his food was our youngest son and he got the macaroni. I'm giving the place a 2 because the waitress was really nice, and the nachos were pretty good. The special tonight was Pork Belly Sliders. Son #1 ordered and didn't even finish the first one. I took a bite and it was a huge bite of fat with sweet sauce that was overwhelming. YUCK. My grilled chicken was not much better. The husband had the fried chicken, which was just okay. The tequila butter for the cornbread muffins tasted like it had been in the refrigerator uncovered for a week. Overall, the atmosphere was fine, the waitress nice, but the food was pretty bad. Maybe we hit it on an off night? With all the other great choices in Austin, this one, voted by all of us, is off our list.

Yeah, The chicken is good, but the dessert was even better. I came in with three others and we ordered a several items. First, We started off with fresh raw oysters. It was pretty good and chilled at just the right temperature. Maybe it's just me, but I like my oysters slightly chilled. Then our deep fried gizzards came out. Cooked perfectly and just a little chewy. Now, On to the fried chicken. Don't get me wrong I like fried chicken as much as the next person. C'mon seriously 24 dollars for a 12 piece bucket is a bit much. No sides included! The chicken was good, but was slightly crispy. ( It was a bit soggy by the time it got to the table.) They have many types of hot sauces on the table for you to choose from. So, When the banana pudding came out in a little mason jar I was a bit skeptical. It so good I couldn't believe it! Not too sweet and the bananas were just ripe. Would I recommend this place?! Yes, the service was very friendly and the atmosphere is perfect for a day out around town. Would I go again? Yes, I will give it a second try soon.

We went for lunch -- it was crowded and had little parking, which seemed a good sign, but now I can't imagine what all the fuss is about. I will say the French fries are the best I've ever had, but aside from that there was little good and a few things quite bad. The chili was so insanely greasy I could only eat two bites. The wedge salad was good, but c'mon, how could you screw that up? My daughter had some very unsatisfying mac & cheese, and my son ate almost none of his chicken basket. Unbelievably, there is no kids' menu. How hard would it be to add some chicken nuggets or chicken tenders to the menu, or some mac & cheese palatable to children? My fiancée ordered the nachos & the jicama slaw, both of which can best be described as bizarre. The jicama was smoked (why? why?) and the nachos had pickled veggies on top which didn't go well with the nachos at all . Finally, the prices were all a dollar or two too high -- $3.50 for lemonade, for example, and $10 for a bowl of chili. Only some snappy service (and the fries) earn that second star.

We were excited about this new restaurant in the neighborhood, but it's been a disappointment. I've been twice and both times the chicken was greasy and soggy. And overpriced - last night we got eight pieces for $20. Definitely not worth it.

I really want to like this place more. It's nearby, it's not a chain and the bartender was laid-back/cool. I also love *bone-in* fried chicken. The chicken here is more like what I got when my mom and dad made it. Lucy's is good, but not really great. I think if they rev'd up the seasoning in the batter I'd like it more. I do enjoy it, and I especially like that they also offer COLD "picnic" fried-chicken on the menu. I love cold fried-chicken. I've never been to a place that served that, instead only enjoying it as a leftover at home. The collard-greens are kind of boring. I think they could benefit with some hearty bacon flavor. The corn bread muffins were dense and dry. I very much enjoyed the deep fried deviled eggs. I could have eaten a dozen of those. Having visited a few times, I've tried most, if not all, of the desserts. None of them do anything for me. I'll return now and then given its convenience and non-chain atmosphere, but I sure wish if they would kick it up a notch.

I FINALLY got to visit the famous Lucy's Fried Chicken!! I have been meaning to make it to the S. Congress location for months but it never happened. Needless to say, I was overjoyed when I found out they were coming to N Austin. My trip this past weekend was HEAVEN!! The food menu is adventurous and creative and everything I ordered was so tasty, I just wished I would have had more room in my stomach to order more. I was also impressed with the drink menu and all the original creations - I had one of the Juicy Lucy watermelon margaritas - it was so delicious and refreshing on a hot September afternoon. The service was great - everyone was so friendly and the vibe at this location is pure laid back Austin. I definitely recommend this place for any Southern fried chicken lovers out there. The fresh oyster preparations are also the most varied in town that I know of - lots of different grilled options available. Looking forward to going back to this place very soon!

A bucket O' Chicken feeds 4!! I say..I say..I said EAT YOUR CHICKEN!! Happy New Year folks!! Mr. Smidgens here with his first review of 2014. This story begins with getting together with some good friends and trying to decide where to eat. You know the drill. "Where do you want to go?" "I don't know. What do you feel like eating?" "Not Mexican, we ate that all week!" Well low and behold, my buddy wanted to go and eat some fried chicken. Sounded good to me. You see my little nuggets, Mr. Smidgens had never been to Lucy's. Well my little fried calf fries, that changed real quick. Finger lickin quick!! As we pulled up I recognized the establishment. Why paint me red and call me Sally!! This was the old Austin Diner I had put oh so many breakfasts in my belly in. As we walked up we were greeted by two smiling employees outside at the hostess stand. The place is Texas Chic. Something you might say out of Gruene, Texas. We sat down and glanced over the drink menu and ordered a Lucy's Frito Misto (basket of oysters, fried green tomatoes, pickled okra, and bacon remoulade. Sounds delicious doesn't it?!! Well when our waiter came back and took our drink orders we figured we would get our app pretty soon. Nope. We talked and waited and finally flagged our waiter down to order our entrees. When we inquired about our mouth teasing app he looked at us as if we were the fake interpreter at the Nelson Mandela memorial and he was a hearing impaired individual. No we did not just call you a muskrat rocking horse bowling ball. We ordered a Frito Misto, good Sir! Once we re-ordered our app it was out rather quickly. We devoured it!! My friend ordered the basket, I ordered the fried chicken spaghetti, and T-Rex ordered the fried chicken salad sandwich. The chicken is fried goodness!! The sandwich was quite a delight in my mouth with the house slaw and the house smoked cayenne chips were finger lickin good! My spaghetti with tasty fried chicken breast topped with cheddar to make it better was a wonderful adventure of cheese and chicken and noodles that went on forever and ever!! Our waiter was a little overwhelmed that night and he had trouble splitting the check between a couple and a family. Yes, split only two ways. He said it was hard. THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!!! FACTS: Happy Hour is 11AM to 7PM. Daily specials. They are open Sun-Thurs 11AM-11PM Fri-Sat 11AM-12AM They have a drink called the Donkey Show. Try the oysters!!! Mr. Smidgens will see you chicken liver lovers later!!

Despite considerable hype, the food is just not very good. I live nearby and have been at Lucy's twice with my family. We were hoping to love it but that was not meant to be. Here are the highlights.. - The fried chicken, which we tried on both occasions thinking the first time was a fluke, is mediocre at best . The meat is reminiscent of frozen dinner chicken. From a seasoning perspective, it is entirely devoid of flavor. The batter is oddly gritty and overly smokey. The net is a bland, greasy, gritty, smokey, letdown. Let's put it this way - most grocery store deli fried chicken tastes better in my opinion. Personally, I thought it was just plain bad, but my wife thought it rises to the level of mediocrity. In either case, this is very surprising given that fried chicken is Lucy's main theme. - If you think the fried chicken is not good, the grilled oysters are even worse. The edible portion of the oyster that I was served was very small. Half of the "Austin" oysters were inedible having the chewy consistency of a piece of leather. The remaining half had no discernible oyster flavor whatsoever due to being inexplicably drowned in hot sauce, which was all I could taste. To top things off, the dish is very expensive for the small amount of actually edible food that you get. - The bland mac & cheese tasted like it came out of a box with the exception that the box does not come with stale breadcrumbs. - The salads were salty enough to preserve herring - The pie I had for dessert, another item you would think it's difficult to screw up, was dried out as if it had been sitting under a heating lamp too long. I do not think there is a single item we tried that I can comfortably say was good. The service was adequate, but in one instance the guy got a bit impatient with my wife. I reluctantly give one star for adequate service, the food came out fast, and the atmosphere seems authentic.

I am a nearby resident. I go to Lucy's because it is walking distance and if I want a good drink. Don't have to worry about drinking and driving. I am a vegetarian and wish they had more options for the veggies but otherwise they will appease you. My recommendation is to sit at the bar Olivia, Javier and Michelle know there stuff. Friendly bar staff and why I continue to go.

What a surprise! We were drawn in by Lucy's awesome neon sign and stayed for beer, oysters, fried chicken and dessert. The raw oysters were among the sweetest and smoothest I've ever had. Followed it up with some amazing fried chicken that my friends admitted was better than Gus's famous fried chicken in downtown Austin. We're definitely going back for more of Lucy's.

I absolutely loved the service here! Everyone was friendly and I felt right at home. The fried chicken is a must! The batter was perfection. What would make this better is if the chicken was soaked and seasoned just a tad bit better. Other than that, it was phenomenal. The smoked potato salad was amazing!!! Tasting the smoky flavor in the potato salad made my tastebuds dance! Brilliant!

Mediocre lunch, for a mediocre day.... A friend to my husband about this place. My husband LOVES fried chicken. Like he love it so much it should be a food group. We figured we would check it out on this gloomy, semi rainy day. I read the reviews there were lots of mixed reviews so I didn't really know how to feel coming to this place. When we walked it I thought it was a really cute, fun looking place. We were greeted by smiling person and they asked "Do you want a square table or a picnic table?" We opted for the picnic table. I had already looked over the menu you online so I was pointing out the highlights to my husband. We decided on the four piece fried chicken. We both ordered our own sides. Hubby got the coleslaw and french fries. The server warned us that the slaw was kind of spicy and we were ok with that. I got the collard greens and grits with cheddar cheese. All the food looked so good I couldn't wait to dig in. Honestly my most favorite thing about lunch was my cheesy grits. The second was the collard greens. Is it terrible that I was most excited about the sides? The fried chicken is crispy. The meat on the inside is border line, almost dry but still edible. Ekk?! This is a fried chicken joint right. I ate the crispy skin/batter by itself and it was really plain. The chicken was really plain. My Husband ordered a the Austin Beerworks Seasonal - Eihorn. I was confused when he asked the server which ABW they had on tap because I have never heard of it. She explained that it was a sour beer. I was so confused. I tasted it and it's not good. The server said she really likes. It's a really different beer and only for certain taste buds she said. So knowing that wouldn't you or couldn't you offer a sample first. I love ABW but this one is just not good. My husband didn't even drink half of it. It's ok when you first take a sip but the after taste is sour and it's just not good. The service was ok. There wasn't that super attention to detail. I almost felt awkward. She was really nice but I think she could have done a better job checking in on us. We were ready for our check we gave her a couple of times to stop by check in and drop off the check. Didn't happen so I had to flag her down and ask for it. My expectations were mixed and I really wanted to like this place. It just wasn't as spectacular as I wanted it to be.

The fried chicken was yummy, good fry and chicken was moist. But the fried batter on the deviled eggs and fried green tomatoes was very salty, we peeled most of it off cause of the salt. The wood fired oysters were very yummy. The trout special was also good, a little too buttery and salty though. Lastly, the sweet tea pie slice, wait for it, was also salty! :-( All the food had good flavor, we were just turned off by the salt. They didn't need to mask anything with salt since the other seasonings were yummy, so less salt please. Our server was very nice, prompt, and attentive to our needs.

Such good food! Awesome location! The 4 piece fried chicken dinner with two sides is plenty for two people to share. I can't wait to go back and try the fried chicken spaghetti! Great customer service as well.

Great bird at a fair price. Best bird i have had in Austin. Wonderful bar staff...lady from Boston is tops and super friendly. $1 Lone Star tall boys on Monday. Great desert pies also.

Ordered the bucket of chicken, deep fried deviled eggs, and finished with banana pudding. The chicken wasn't crisp or really seasoned one way or the other. Overall kind of bland? Pickle and jalapeno helped...they should include a few more. The deviled eggs; really salty and I like a lot of salt but it was a little too much. Lastly, banana pudding. Looked interesting but in the end also kinda bland...no banana taste and Nilla wafer thing going on to help the texture. Staff was very friendly and attentive and a nice place to have a drink. For an in-your-face kind of a menu the food just doesn't stand up.

The aesthetic of Lucy's is kind of a mix between 50's diner and Cajun eatery. I was expecting more of an Elvis style buttermilk type chicken, but it's more in line with the "extra tasty crispy" business. The sides are where it's at: stewed okra, Mexican sweet potatoes, smoked potato salad, and cornbread just to name a few. They have sweet tea and sweet tea pie! That's a first I had never heard of! The service was very friendly and fast, and Lucy's is a good place to get your southern on.

they have a sunday brunch, so of course, i hit it. it looks like the menu changes from week to week, maybe, but i went with the omelet. everyone in the place besides me was ordering chicken and waffles. i might actually have to give myself a day off from not eating chicken to partake in this dish. it looked amazing. my omelet was good, but omelets are omelets. i believe it came with home fries, too, so i was plenty full by the time i decided to stop eating. they have a nice patio area you can sit on if it's not sweltering outside.

This place is awesome! This style of food typically isn't on my radar! However, I went two days in a row, with no regrets! Great staff! Incredible food, and drinks

Don't trust that there won't be bones in your chicken salad or chicken bowl. I found out both the hard way. And it wasn't just one or two bones, but several throughout. I finally just quit eating it. When I told our waitress she just shrugged and said it's normal. Very disappointed with this supposed hometown classic.

Super! Some questionable menu items like chicken spaghetti and bulls' testicles (make sure you know this before ordering "mountain oysters.") Love their salad. But they stuff it into such a tiny bowl! (looks cute but has logistical problems). Best collards I ever did eat. Crushed ice! They even play cool music sometimes. Customers can get way too loud and obnoxious on the patio. Not a fan of dogs allowed at the table either, personally, but people seem to love that here. In all I think they really do good work here. This is quality comfort cuisine in a cool Austiny atmosphere.

I tried Lucy's Fried Chicken after all the hype and much to my dismay I was quite unimpressed. I had the fired chicken as it was recommended by others and it was nothing to write home about. Hardly any flavor and quite dry when I got it. I also ordered the mashed potatoes which are red potatoes smashed and cooked in a skillet (very bland if you asked me). When I asked for gravy the server brought it out and didn't tell me it would cost extra until I saw it on my bill. In the end I spent over $25 for a meal that was barely mediocre at best. I am not a fan of fast food but I would rather go to Bush's or Popeyes and be more satisfied at a quarter of the price. This place was a lot better when it was Austin's Diner. Some people rave about this place but it just didn't do it for me. Hopefully your experience will be better than mine!

What a great place to grab a cold one and enjoy some down home cooking. We had a bucket of their best fried chicken with a side of mac and cheese. Their mac and cheese is flipping good, like grandma good. Their drinks were cold and lots of local spirits and beers to choose from. I love a place that keeps it local and that is exactly what Lucy's does. Their Fried Chicken is good, even better a few hours later once its cooled. I openly admit I am not big on Fried food but I found theirs really good. The employee's were super friendly, helpful and professional. They were attentive without being bothersome. The one challenge I see is their parking. The place has limited parking on their lot so I imagine it could be a bit challenging if you during a busy time. There does seem to be street parking so that would offset the lot parking but it is worth noting. All in all this is a nice little place and their main event (Fried Chicken) is pretty darn good!

Second time eating at this location. For me to return to the same place in this foodtastic city says it all! The first time I ordered the vegetable plate and been craving it ever since. This time I really was tempted to repeat my order, but ventured outside my comfort zone for the house salad with added grilled chicken. Then horseradish salad dressing was unique and outstanding!! Love the food and the vibe!

I first went to Lucy's Fried Chicken for my birthday three years ago - at the time the only location was in South Austin. Since that first magical experience we have taken pretty much any carnivore out of town guest, visitor or friend that crosses our path. And I plan to go AGAIN for my birthday this weekend. The Diablo Oysters are amazingly delicious - spicy as all get out, but worth the burning in your mouth. We also get a bucket of chicken to share, along with smashed grilled potatoes, corn on the cob and corn bread muffins. The chicken is the best I have ever had. It is crunchy and tasty - just down right delicious. And the sides are always perfect. They have some great local beer options, and both locations have a nice patio area if you prefer sitting outside (which we always do, unless it is freezing....which means less than 60 to our Texan blood....) I can also vouch for the s'mores pie, which was the perfect end to a great meal. This is NOT a healthy place to eat, but it is worth the calories.

There are two things with decidedly Southern roots that I have a great fondness for - my son, and fried chicken. So, on a warm October day, I set out to try to jam them together. Despite my assuming Lucy's was actually "Lucy's Chicken and Waffles" biz, I didn't note any waffles available on the menu. What *is* clearly on the menu is a massive array of fried deliciousness ranging all over the fried meat spectrum. From mountain oysters to gizzards, if you can chop it off or cut it out of a cow or chicken, it's on the menu. My favorite of the evening was the fried liver appetizer. The batter was fantastic - and the liver was perfectly cooked. Perhaps you balk at organ meats? Well forget you, then - I grew up supping on liver and I love it. The fried chicken, as you might hope given it's centerpiece status at Lucy's, was very tasty. The batter was a bit light on spice but still well married well to the juicy chicken. I also had some of their fries and black eyed peas, which were all great. And they made a grilled cheese for my son and his buddy which they both destroyed with relish. I would have, too - it looked damn good on the giant grilled Texas toast. My only complaint comes from the "Smashed potato" side. I'm not sure if this is intended as a running joke of "Let's see who actually orders this!" or if it's a legitimate side that someone was like, "It's funny! But also it's food!" It was literally that - a smashed, grilled potato. I think there might have been some butter on it. It wasn't bad... but it was just that: A plain grilled potato that someone smashed onto a plate. Overall, a great experience for a first time - kid-friendly, good food, and decent beers on the menu. Also, big bonus to the fact our waitress looked like Faith from Buffy the Vampire slayer, ass-kicker boots and all. Especially considering she was probably three years old when Buffy was on TV. So try Lucy's and everything will be Five by Five, B.

Was excited to try this restaurant.....however, Won't return anytime soon. Batter on my gizzards and chicken fried steak was almost inedible, it was horribly salty. The watermelon drink of the day didn't really have a watermelon flavor but did have a healthy dose of alcohol. Service was average and the place wasn't very busy.

I looooove fried chicken. And in the words of Colonel Sanders, "it's finger-lickin good!" Unlike other greasy fried chicken places, Lucy's has managed to make eating fried chicken almost seem healthy (almost). I didn't feel too bad about myself as I chomped down on a plate of wings because the tasty, perfected juicy chicken outweighed the fat going straight to my a$$.
