I have been here only once but it's a good place to stop and grab a drink and catch up with friends. I like the picnic tables and the casual feel of it. Didn't eat there so I cannot talk about the food. Basically would go back and have another beer or two.

We came here on a Tuesday night after going to eat at Home Slice Pizza. I've been here before and enjoyed the outdoor seating. They have a pet-friendly patio which is pretty neat if you're a dog lover like me! But last night, I fell in love with this place! I mean, where else can you go and get Shiner Bock for $2.50 pints! All of their domestic beers were that price! Great deal!

My lady and I came to SoCo on the advice of a friend and randomly picked Doc's out of all the cool places. We were very pleased with our decision. The pitcher of LoneStar wasn't ice cold but for $10 it was cold enough! The food was great! Had breakfast for dinner, the South Austin Scramble was awesome! And for my wife, the people watching was top notch! The waitstaff was very friendly and although a busy time, was very attentive. I highly recommend that you give this joint a try!

My husband and I LOVE Doc's. Fish tacos, guac, margaritas--all amazing. Perfect patio, great for people watching, game watching, dog petting, whatevs. Also, in a great area to shop and walk off your meal in!

Can't really say the food is very good, though I am kind of fond of those fried mushrooms. When they push the food up a notch, I'll give 'em another star. Doc's is really about alcohol consumption and the hotter it gets the more that I want to drink margaritas. THE HYBRID, a frozen margarita, is the driving force behind this review. It's all in the details, you see, when you read the description there is a little hidden gem. Alternate Fuel. These little margaritas pack a frosty punch. In fact a few of these and the world will seem all a glorious haze. I'm thinking that Alternate Fuel just might be everclear or it's cousin.....so if you need to cool down and want a frozen margarita with a bit of a kick try out the hybrid.....

Beer, Wine, people watching, good food and more. What else would you want being situated perfectly on congress. Excellent outdoor seating with fans and misters for those Texas heat days. They have several TV's inside so you can keep up with your favorite sporting event. I'll try not to become a fixture here to but the fish and chips crispy style is too hard to pass up. :)

Labor Day weekend - not really busy but 1/2 price burgers and cold beers. Seemed like a good choice for lunch after walking round the south congress shops. Had the "sancha" burger - beef, chorizo and retried beans. Extremely tasty and just the right amount of food! Served on top of some solid fries. Would definitely do this burger again. Friend had the chicken fried avocado stuffed with chicken. Also good but I think I won the contest. Solid list of beers though many of them are in the lighter side. Had a St Arnold lawnmower - never a bad choice on a hot day.

I go to Docs bc it alone has the standard go-to sportsbar setting in south Austin. Lots of tvs and patio tables. Beer and pub food. That being said, the food is overpriced. "Happy hour" isn't a good deal at all. The game selection that's on the tv is sometimes weird, and they don't put on the audio for the big local football games like most sportsbars. Docs does well bc it has no competition in the So-Co area.

I have lived here for 4.5 years and just realized how cool Doc's is! Where have I been? I have no clue. But I was definitely missing out on Doc's. I stopped in here for the first time during SXSW. My friends and I were in need of some cold beverages and a snack. It is a seat yourself kinda of place so we found a table. We quickly made friends with our waitress - she was awesome! We each had some cold beers, which were delicious and we ordered the ground beef nachos. Those nachos were so good and perfect! Everything was so good we actually went back to Doc's the next day and hung out for several hours and listened to the live bands. I sipped on some delicious, perfect margaritas and of course we had some more nachos. We ended having a bunch of our friends meet up with us here and we had a great time! I loved the atmosphere here at Doc's. Everything was chill. There are TVs inside if you want to watch a game or you can hang out on their gorgeous patio and enjoy the beauty of South Congress while people watching. They also have free wifi here which is a total plus! I will absolutely be back!

Great environment, indoors and out. Cold beer, plenty of tvs (great for a game day). Haven't tried the food but I hear good things. My only qualm is the waiter - brought our tab before we were ready and then encouraged us to tab out. I apologize - I came here to enjoy my Sunday night football. I'll tab out when ready, thank-you.

Great SoCo bar to watch sports or drink beer! They had a pretty decent beer list and they have some decent veggie options: veggie burger, veggie sandwich, salads, veggie tacos, queso, four-layer bean dip, fried mushrooms, fried pickles, onion rings, and more. Definitely a very chill bar on SoCo. Great if you're looking for a bar that is more chill than trendy!

Well decided to seat on this place after shopping the whole evening. Little did we know that the service would be so bad. To be honest i don't know if our serving lady was just tired or irritated or just didn't care but she simply was not in the mood to serve us. I was really wondering at the end of the night if i should tip or not. Food was ok - had the fried avocado - but the beers were at least interesting.

The benefits of Doc's - Great patio to enjoy the weather - Insane view of Austin. You will get some of the new with the old - The food is mediocre but above par for standard bar food. The mixed fajita plate for one actually lasted us three good meals. The Buffalo Chicken Salad was good but it was VERY simple, lettuce, tomato, cheese, chicken breast pieces with buffalo sauce. The Frito Pie was good and could serve a small army battalion, twice. The not so prettys - Service was a bit slow but what do you expect when you constantly packed - Drinks are different but not always in a good way. FYI, add some Tabasco to the Michelada

Enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. Ate here during the week for lunch. Not busy at all when we were there. We sat ourselves, and the waitress came over with menus right away. Luckily they were having half price burgers! I ordered the Frito pie burger, which was a bit messy but good. Husband ordered the Tort burger, which is a burger wrapped in a tortilla instead of a bun. He really liked it. Before that we had the appetizer South Congress Eggrolls - so delicious! They are cheesy goodness! We got the chicken kind. Would definitely return, if only to get those "Eggrolls" again!

Picture it: Sunday and we want to catch some football before ACL Fest. We fired up the Yelp app (duh, what else would we use) and landed here. Great location, tons of tables, killer patio and football all over the place. Get there early and check the tvs to see which games will be where. They can't change the channels. Be understanding about this. If they change one, then they'd have to change them all. We posted up outside and immediately took advantage of the $3 mimosa special. Service is kind of slow. I went with the chicken fried avocado stuffed with chicken. Oh yes my friends, this is a thing. And it's covered in a tomatillo cream sauce. Out of the six of us, this was definitely the winner. Delicious. Looking at their menu, they have a great list of specials throughout the week. Want to watch MNF somewhere? Doc's has half price burgers. Yelp nails it here. I would say Doc's is a 3.5, so I'll round up to 4 stars.

Great patio that allows dogs, fun place to go with a bunch of friends for some decent food, good drinks at a reasonable price. It is in a great location to watch the hustle of S. Congress street, and always a lively place. The food is alright, nothing spectacular but still pretty good, and the drink prices are decent as well. They have large tables for bigger groups and TVs in order to watch the games going on - which you can see from just about any seat in the place (outside included). Great place to go hang out once the sun has gone down (during the summertime heat). We have tried a few items here: Nachos (pretty good but not your standard plate of tons of chips with all the fixings, it is a per chip pile up); Chicken sandwich - also pretty good; Salads - they are really big and some of the better choices for food here; veggie tacos - they were alright, the mushrooms are a bit sweet which is not my thing so not my favorite dish; chips + salsa (good kick to it) + guacamole - can't go wrong!

1 star for a cool vibe. My friends and I were here on a Friday afternoon. It was fairly crowded-- not too crazy though. However I was compelled to write about the disappointing service. Our server was barely anywhere to be found. We were here for about 2 hrs and we must've seen her 3 times-- 1 for our initial order, 2 cuz we waved her down and 3 to get our checks. It took forever to get our food and drinks and we were hardly checked up on. Food was subpar. Drinks are well, drinks. You can find a place that serves the same but probably far better service.

This place will do for a decent spot to grab a drink and some food if you are down in the SoCo area. While they do get crowded they seem to get crowded after several other places on Congress in the area do, maybe because they are further down the street or maybe because the food, while overall ok, is bar food mostly. They have lots of tv's showing sports so that is a plus for sports fans. I have been here several times and the service is average overall. Nothing bad but nothing out of the ordinary. I usually end up having to track down our server for a check.

Came on national hot dog day, didn't get a hot dog, first time here. inside seats were all full so we sat outside, wanted to sit inside cuz it was really hot but didn't complain. got excellent service. we got buffalo wings, chips &queso. the food wasn't that great.. the $4 happy hour margarita is what I'd come back for, not so much the food.

Of course I went here for happy hour. We've been here several times before. This time we ventured to try something new. Fried fish slider - sounds iffy but very good. Fish was not fishy and batter was crunchy. The slaw was great and the slider roll was like a thanksgiving day roll (soft and fluffy but not too much bread). Fried pickles - my fiance's has now deemed these as his favorite fried pickles. They are the chip style vs spear style. Not my fave but good to eat.

I came here with my two girlfriends. It was ok. They had a large outdoor patio which you could smoke at if you want or bring your dog. The chips and salsa were really tasty. We had the fries as well...both healthy portions. Mostly we just ordered a few munchies to go with a couple drinks. I had a better time than my friend. Our waitress wasn't very friendly which sort of affected the evening. It wasn't a terrible experience and mostly we were just having a few drinks...so I would be willing to give them another shot for dinner. We left after a few and went somewhere else.

This place was terrible. We paid more than $80 for food that was worth less than $5. The restaurant was slow and service was not attentive. Ordered two Long Island iced teas and they were watered down. The waitstaff never asked if we wanted refills on the drinks other people at the table had ordered. This place is just all around bad. Food was cold, fries were soggy, and nothing had any flavor (cheeseburger minis, chicken platter w/veggies, blackened fish platter w/fries). Do not go here for food or drinks. Yuck.

A decent beer selection. A decent ambiance. Decently priced. Honestly, I can't think of anything particularly good or particularly bad to say about this place. A-OK describes it just right. It fit the bill for drinks while we were waiting, but didnt exceed expectations at all. A-OK.

Aside from ACL Fest this place was the highlight of our weekend! We wondered in after the fest because it was open late. I was in the mood for something extreme so I tried the Frito Pie. Hands down the best Frito Pie I ever had. I think it was the cheese they used. And it was more than I could finish. My girlfriend was crazy about the Stuffed Avocado. I noticed they had some breakfast dishes that sounded amazing. We figured if it was almost on par with dinner it would be worth coming back to. So we did! We were planning to watch the Cowboys game that Sunday at noon so we got there early enough to eat breakfast and grab a good seat. Once we finished what we could of our plates (the servings are huge) we ordered beers and the game began. Cowboys pulled off an overtime victory over the Texans! It just added to the magic of this place. We'll be seeing you again the next time we're in Austin.

The drinks are pretty cheap here and I really like the outdoor space. My friend and I actually came here on a Tuesday night; they give away a free bike if you sign up for their raffle by 9pm. The one thing I don't understand about their raffle is that they pull two names for gift certificates (I forget to where) around 9:15pm but if those winners don't get a chance to win the bike, that means you have a higher chance of winning a bike over a $25 gift certificate. Weird. Anyway, guess who won a bike last Tuesday? No, not me, but my friend who took me there. The strange thing with the bike was that there was no kickstand (is that normal?) but hey, she still got a $450 bike at the bargain price of 2 Lone Stars.

My mom and brother and sister were visiting from out of town and after a long morning of shopping on Congress we decided to try this place for lunch. It wasn't very busy at all when we sat down.I didn't order a drink but I liked that they had a good list of local brews. Now for the food...that's where it went downhill.My chicken sandwich came out without the bacon,guacamole,and cheese it was supposed to have.I just asked if I could get it on the side which I received.The chicken was a tiny thin piece of chicken that was chewy in a couple places.I did like that sandwiches came on a wheat bun though.Everyone else said their burgers were nothing special and could've used more seasoning.We ate because we were starving.My brother really loved the fried avocado though.The service was pretty slow and we never got refills on drinks but there seemed to be only one server in the entire place and she had too many tables and was just super swamped.Ive been there too and know how that is and it really wasn't a huge deal. Would I come back for the food?Absolutely not.There are way better options in Austin for bar food and burgers.Would I come back with the bf for a couple beers and to watch a game?Probably if we happen to be close by.Maybe even try an appetizer since that's what seems to be popular here.

Great place to drink beer, watch sports and hang out with friends. OK place for food. Wife had chicken sandwich and I ordered the beef sliders with a side of fries and either one wasn't anything special. I guess my 4 stars is based on a good place to to gather with friends. I will have to try other items on the menu and see if it will change my mind about the food.

I stopped by from a long bike rides to load up on carbs, and protein. Took about twenty minutes before I got my water. Maybe beer next time but I want to limit risk of getting run over. Another 15 before the food which was ok at best. The most disappointing part of the experience was that the waitress was about as excited to provide service as a clerk at a government job that's been in the same position for twenty years and hates their job. 1 star for being a restaurant 1 star for outdoor seating

Came here for a birthday celebration. Carol was our waitress and she was fantastic. Very attentive and she kept the tabs for 21 people straight without any issues. This is definitely a good spot to hangout, celebrate, or catch a game.

Food and drinks were fantastic...had the worst service experience however. My server (I believe her name was Casey) was the least personable person I've ever met in the service industry. Took us 20 minutes to order our food in her near empty section. There was also a spilling accident which got all over my clothing which two of the servers including ours witnessed and nobody rushed to clean it up. I had to find napkins and clean the table myself. Super sad because this Doc's is super close to where I work. Will not rush back.

Pretty good beer selection and their happy hour/daily specials are nice, but that's about all I have to say about this place. It honestly felt like it was perched at the top of SoCo just to snare people in with no substance at all. Service with a bad attitude and subpar bar food. Ok place to watch a game but I don't doubt there are a ton of other places to catch sports with better service and food in the area. The patio is nice but it gets full and isn't enough to redeem the place. Won't be back.

Stopped by Doc's last night (11/28/15) with a few friends to watch the Spurs game. I was quite shocked by the absolute disdain the waitress had for us. We weren't even able to complete our drink order before having to leave. I am not going to go into what I believe her motivations were, but it was made abundantly clear that we were not welcome. Suffice it to say I will not be setting foot on Doc's property again and will make it a point to tell my story early and often.

After stopping at three places to try and get lunch we came across Doc's. We were looking for a place to be seated at a table, get a bite to eat, and have a few normal drinks. We found a table and then we were greeted by Jen. We ordered drinks, ordered an appetizer, (which were awesome) and then lunch. We had great food, great service and a great time. I would recommend this place for good company, GREAT service (ask for Jen) and good food.

Make sure you go on a Wednesday night for $1 tacos!! Make sure you get some salsa and chips and pan nachos to share! I'm cheap, hence why I chose to go for this specific special, but the rest of the menu sounds amazing and I will likely return! The staff was able to accommodate a large group and didn't make a fuss when our group was incomplete which was great! Also love the shuffleboard :)

We were walking by and decided to sit on the patio for lunch. It's got a really nice, relaxing atmosphere I had the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich with fries, which in hindsight was was too heavy for lunch! But, it was delicious and the portion was enormous. They also had this really good green chile ranch for dipping. My bf had the Blackened Fish sliders and enjoyed them, but wouldn't necessarily come back for them.

A good bar food joint for bikers... lots and lots of bikers. What's not to love? I went here to check out the local biker scene here in Austin on Tuesday and was quite impressed with the turn out. Doc's was very spacious and accommodating for the bikers that may like a good spot to eat. I ordered a salmon sandwhich with fries and it's exactly what I could hope for in a bar. Overall, come to chat with bikers on Tuesdays and if you are expecting bar food then you came to the right place.

We stopped into Doc's Motorworks because my guy wanted to show me the place. I love the outdoor patio with the fan misters and the roll up doors, but more often than not we found ourselves at the bar watching my home team play baseball. Out of all the Micheladas I had in Austin and I had a lot, I loved the ones at Doc's. The Michelada del Sur were so good. They are made with Dos XX Lager, Tomato (they use Zing Zang Bloody Mary MIx), Lime and Salt. One hell of an easy yet flavorful combination. Also the Carnitas Nachos for Happy Hour were so damn good. More like 5 carnita tostadas, but worth the $5 and very filling. I loved the roasted jalapeÃ±o. Although we had other places to adventure off to, I wanted to come back later in my vacation for another Michelada. I'm a fan.

It's a sports bar that happens to be on south congress. It always takes a while to be noticed by the waitresses. The food is okay. Come here to hang out with friends to watch a game or have a few beers, but not for mind-blowing food.

Consistently slightly over priced for serving something you, literally, could easily make, yourself. Consistently nothing special enough to choose over anything else unless for convenience. I hands down think that a better Doc's experience is to be had at the Brodie location, even if you're not a breeder.

3.5 stars is unfair for Doc's, though by no means are they a 5 star bar. They're just a very, very good 4 star bar. If you're shopping on Congress and need a beer or Bloody Mary this is your place. The beer list is solid, and the Bloody strong and spicy. Would I go out of my way to come here? Nah. But is it perfect if you happen to be on Congress? Totally? 59/365

This Docs blows the other location out of the water. I can take Tucker. There are loads of other dogs there, so he always enjoys the lady doggies. There isn't a playground within 3 miles, ergo there are no screaming children. So I can drop the F bomb without feeling like a dick. I like to enjoy the sun, the best micheladas in town, and some great food with adults. There are plenty of TVs so sports are always rolling, and that draws guys. So instantly I'm happy. I always have a happy waiter or waitress. They seem to like working there, so I don't question that it's just a cool, laid back Austin place to kick it with some pals.

Man, I really want to like Doc's but have now been here 4-5 times since moving to SoCo, and I just can't recommend it. Atmosphere and sports on many tis make it an OK place to watch a game and have a beer, but THE FOOD IS BLAND. Had the fajitas one time, they were completely overcooked and a very small portion. The Pulled Pork sandwich was one of the worst I've had. Service is also questionable at best. It has a lot of potential, but please, redo the menu and hire new cooking staff

I like the decor of Doc's as it used to be a car repair shop and have all these retro signs along the wall. Service was polite but took forever to even ask what we wanted to drink. Food was edible but not mind blowing. Nice patio to sit outside with you and your friends (and your pets too!). One of the TV's had a constant green tint on it. The bigger TV's are inside. Doc's would be on my list if I was in the mood but I have other sports bars that take priority.

Positives: lots of seating, lots of tvs and good atmosphere to watch sports, though it isn't one of those sports bars that gets overcrowded. Negatives: service can be a bit slow. the food is truly mediocre, even for a bar. prices tend to be slightly above average for austin, though south congress tends to be a bit pricier. They do have half price burgers on Mondays, making it not a bad place to watch MNF.

I really love this place! I've hung out on their porch, I've sat inside at the bar; I've brought my dogs, and I've even tried their food. Jury came back in, and the verdict is... AWESOME! The place gets crowded, but usually--as long as you don't look too scary, cheesy, or annoying--you can park at the other end of someone's outdoor picnic table. My advice is to get there early and secure a table, but regardless, this is always a must-stop down on South Congress. Ice-cold beer, full bar, and a decent menu of bar-fare, a good time is always to be had at Doc's. The waitstaff is always friendly, too. Came here on a Saturday just to have a few drinks with some friends. We've heard great things about docs for a while so we decided to check it out. Don't come here unless you want to be treated like you're renewing your license at the DPS. Every single waiter we interacted with was extremely rude and rolled their eyes anytime we asked for something.... Like another drink. I don't know if anyone in the staff has gotten laid lately or not but management needs to change because having bitchy waitresses is not beneficial to any business.

The food and atmosphere here is great - but the customer service makes me really embarrassed for them - very slow, spacey, not congenial or engaging - sort of oblivious. Has happened on several occasions with several different employees. Bad enough to make that cringey face every time someone says we're going to Doc's and I live next door so it's just so hard to avoid it. Is there a manager somewhere that owes the wait staff here a great pep talk or what? Please!

I had to wait one hour to get just a glass of water. Went to the bar to ask for it, told me they would send someone to the table. No one came. Waitresses kept apologizing while I saw them texting at the back of the restaurant. Great place, awful service.

Went here Thanksgiving night. Easy parking and not many folks here that night. Our waitress was bad. She came and took our order, brought our drinks, and then the food, that's it. She hid in the back the entire rest of the time. Not once was she out taking care of her customers. I had to go to the bar twice myself to ask for things. My burger came out lukewarm. I'm sure it was sitting back there waiting while something else was cooking from our party. It was still really good, but may have been fantastic if it was hot. The onion rings had a soggy, rubbery coating instead of a crisp one. The fish on the Fish & Chips looked pretty good. Everyone hated their fries. The fried, stuffed Avacodo is also very tasty here. Worth checking out, just need to work out the things that aren't very good and avoid them.

I'm visiting TX from NC and enjoyed the downtown scene during the evening. When hunger struck, we searched and searched for a hot place. I'm surprised its only 3.5 stars...4 is very appropriate!! Loved the veggie taco...fabulous combination of porta bellow mushrooms, avocado and goat cheese...the mushroom was excellently seasoned!! The ambiance was fun, seating comfy and quite a chill location. The wine list was a little lacking, but I get it, it's a bar where beer speaks louder than wine. And the waitress was a tad stiff. All in all, great dinner!! 4 stars is perfect!

After a long and frustrating day at the Tx DMV(s), I sought out happy hour consolement. Doc's on SoCo did just that. $2.50 budlight, and other select domestic beer on tap, was just what this baller on a budget needed. They also have a selection of $5 apps, which the bf and I shared the fried mushrooms. The portion will be able to feed plenty, great quanity and quality for your buck! The bartenders and waitstaff were super nice, quick and attentive, even with a packed house. The normal food prices are a little steep for bar food, in my opinion, but if you hit up the happy hour, you and your wallet will leave happy! I'll be checking off Doc's as a fave HH spot!

Doc's you know I love you! And you know this because you are all over my credit card statements. I have been going to Doc's since they first opened and there is definitely a reason for that. I think the majority of that reason is because I am a ragging alcoholic and Doc's is within stumbling distance to my apartment; but also because I have always just loved the atmosphere, the staff and they really do have good drink specials. I think it's pretty widely known that Doc's has never been known for their food and I have to agree. I never eat here unless it's on one of their food special nights because you really can get better food much cheaper elsewhere. Favorite night of the week to go is Tuesday. I love Texas beers and you get a big selection for $3 a pint.

Went here after a good work out, which means I deserve all the calories I want to eat. I ended up getting a Cider and some sweet potato fries. The fries were pretty good, would definitely get them again. I haven't tried anything else, but i'm sure i'll stop by for their happy hour one day!

Doc's may be an overwhelmingly average staple on Congress Ave., but still: It's a staple. The location is prime. The patio? Killer. And the drinks are relatively cheap, ice cold and come out fast enough. Still, something about this bar screams amateur day-drinking olympics. In fact, many hours after leaving, my friend and I walked past the patio and noticed that many of the same patrons were still somehow hanging out and hanging on. Impressive? Perhaps! The micheladas pale in comparison to the glorious recipe the Hotel San Jose serves up the street and the beer list makes me a bit sad, but the sunny patio fixes everything.

Having recently moved to South Congress from Melbourne, Australia, I was looking for a local sports bar with a friendly vibe, well priced beer, great specials, and decent food. Doc's has all of these things. It also has a great bar that facilitates conversation if you're having a quick beer on your own, or catching sport on one of the many well placed TVs. The bar staff are great - Michelle and Ravin in particular get it done with razor sharp service, quick wit, humorous banter, and a smile. This is a great place to meet mates for a weekday/weekend drink or quick meal, and also great to head to on your own to chew the fat with locals, relocated Americans, and international visitors/residents. Highly recommended.

While visiting with my fellow Austin Yelpers we decided to grab some more drinks after a Yelp Elite event, and I was tagging along for the afternoon. HELLO PATIO! We have patios in Denver but this one is pretty freaking awesome. Picnic tables outside, a big group of us got one of the last tables and the drinking commenced. Cheap beer and wine, with some good overall offerings. People watching was a hoot and oh how I love to judge when I'm not the one walking by. Great group of people with a cold beer and decent service. I think this is a place I'd venture just for the patio.

Do you like sitting around and judging people who probably make more money than you do? SO DO I... and apparently so do a lot of other people. Doc's is your safe haven from all of the SoCo Yuppies. Great cheap beer specials. Awesome happy hour food menu, One of the best patios in Austin. You can do no better than Doc's on South Congress but you can definitely do a lot worse. Stop in and have a cold beer, I guarantee you will come back when you are in the area,

I'm typically here at least twice a week, and this is one of the best bar teams in town. I still miss Liz and Katie, but Clayton, Karen, Dyanna, Laura, and Patrick always make me feel welcomed and appreciated for being here. Weekdays are mellow and the place has more of a neighborhood feel, which is better for me. Weekends are usually packed with sports fans going crazy over every tv in the place. Lots of sports to see, which I can totally appreciate. I love 1/2 price burger Mondays, $5 slider Tuesdays, $1 taco Wednesdays, and $5 wing Thursdays. Fried egg sandwich is another favorite, along with the chicken fried avocado. The bloody hell Bloody Mary and Mexican martinis are pretty epic, and don't ruin your dinner by not ordering the cheesecake. You can thank me later.

My 2 buds and I were looking for a basic watering hole to have a beer and kick back, we were walking along Congress from a friend's house and saw Doc's... The sign on the front said, "This ain't Monaco, this is SOCO" And with that, we rolled in! Spacious and fun layout, lots of loud folks on hand for the Stanford Oregon game! Our waitress was efficient and smiley. We just stayed for a couple of beers and had to depart so I can't comment on the food. One particular thing readily caught my attention when I strolled to the bathroom, there was this curious swing game being played. It was a simple metal ring tied to the end of a string that was hung about 7 feet from the wall, the premise was to accurately swing the ring so that you could catch it on a hook that is fasten to the wall opposite from you. Simple, yet addicting! lol

This is a great place to watch a game or just hang out. They have TVs all over the place, and the beer flows like wine. I was swimming in Shiner Holiday Cheer. The waitress was very helpful, and we tried a few appetizers. The fried pickles had a nice spicy kick to them, and the queso was pretty tasty as well. Being on South Congress, I can imagine Doc's can get crazy crowded from time to time.

This is another place I desperately want to love; it's close to my house, has a great patio, great specials, decent selection of local taps, and the sound of Harleys on Tuesday nights is music to my ears. The food is just alright, but my big problem with Doc's is the service. I have been in the service industry for my entire adult life, so bad service is VERY obvious to me, and quite particularly the other night, when I got NO service. Thank the stars for bartenders, or I would NEVER go back here. I made a load of money during SXSW. Like, $$$$$ BALLIN'. Since it ended, I had been going out to bars, restaurants, and coffeeshops and spreading the love to fellow industry workers with 100+% tips. I came in fully intending to make a server's night. The patio was full, so I grabbed a beer from the bar and waited for a table to open up; didn't take long before I had a spot. Granted, I'm sitting at a table with a full beer; it looks like maybe I've been served already which would make sense to not be greeted if they were rotating tables - but they were not. They had server sections. My table had been cleared of all but the previous customers' check. After about 5 minutes of sitting and waiting, a server stopped by, grabbed the check, but would not even look at me. FIVE servers passed around me for over 20 minutes without a word or even a smile. (I should mention here that in my experience as a server, EVERYONE is your customer, whether they're at your table or not.) I'm STARVING, and now I'm out of beer. I figure, okay, give it 5 more minutes, maybe someone will see the empty beer and a light will go off. I'm making eye contact and even trying to flag down any server who flits by me; NOTHING. I finally gave up and ordered from the bar. But the horror didn't end there!! At the bar, the female bartender only looked up at me and then went back to printing out checks (a smile and "Someone will be right with you" goes a long way, people.) Finally the male bartender came back and took my order. When I told him about not receiving service at the table, he didn't acknowledge or apologize. Once my food arrived, I was only 3 bites in when an SA came by and tried to start clearing the condiments and extra plate I'd been given. Like whoa dude, calm your tits, I ain't even opened that ketchup yet. Honestly, this is not the first time something like this has happened here. I've come to expect mediocre-bad service from this place, but this was the first time I had NO service. Only giving the second star for all the things mentioned before the rant.

I love this bar! We hit Doc's on a Sunday afternoon and the place was packed. Reasonably priced drinks, good food and lots of cute guys. Attracts a crowd ranging from about 21 to 45. Definitely a good time, I highly recommend it.

This is where I'll come to watch football, drink a beer, have a snack and that's about it. Parking was easy for a game day. We parked behind the bar on the curb. We came in on Saturday for the A&M game and to meet up with a friend we haven't seen in a few years. We were able to see the game easily on numerous screens - but we could hardly hear the person sitting next to us. Yep - I fully understand a bar is probably the last place you want to catch up during football, but it still would have been nice not to have to ask people to repeat what they said 2 or 3 times. The beer selection was great, the food was good (we had the carnitas nachos and a burger - both good and would def. order again). Our waitress, however, could not have cared less. Every time she stopped at our table I only had to count to 2 before she'd roll her eyes (about what I'm not sure) but it almost seemed to pain her to have to take drink orders and food orders. And half the time she couldn't HEAR us over the noise. But she copped an attitude with us about it.. Sorry - we're not in charge of the TVs or you choosing to work here. She practically flung our bills at us and then insisted we close out because her shift was up. I feel bad because she left such a bad taste in our mouth we didn't reopen our tabs with the next waitress (who was very attentive and nice) because the game was almost over. I'll be back for more game days - but definitely not in the original waitress's section if I can help it.

I spend a lot of time here to watch football games. The have Sunday ticket and it is great to see all the fans come out on Sundays for fun (or Monday/Thursday). Food is average, but the wings are great. Lots of great food and drink specials that make it an inexpensive way to watch the games.

I love this bar. Huge patio...they have heaters for winter and fans for summer and you can bring your dog. They have games inside to play and the game is usually on for sports fans. They usually have a good crowd with all different types of people. And it's on congress soooo if you're a people watcher then have fun on the patio.

DO NOT GO IF YOU HAVE YOUNG BOYS!!!! There are playboys hanging up all over the men's bathroom, not the kind of conversation you want to be having with your young children over dinner or lunch! I think its extremely inappropriate, and basically it made it go down in ratings from 3-star to 2-star, because I find that to be entirely offensive!!! It's not like its a club-scene with pumping techno music, its a place where hamburgers are served. This will keep me from EVER going there again with my kids. This place is not known for its service. And has a college-kid vibe to it, or at least from what my experience is. It took about 5 minutes to even get noticed after we arrived, another 5 minutes for our drinks, and we kept getting different wait staff. But, the food was really good! The burgers are out-of-this-world delicious! And has a good beer selection too! So, if you are parent, find another place to take your kids in So-Co, possibly Magnolia's Cafe?

I come here nearly every day, so there's that. Why? 1. I live next door 2. Karen the bartender (I have a girl crush) 3. Taco Wednesday... $1 tacos! Beef, chicken AND bean. 4. Cheap beer, cool cocktail drinks 5. Great place to watch sports Definitely a great sports by stand-by, plus it's open air when it's warm so it has a really fun, outdoorsy feel. I haven't tried the Bloody Mary yet but they obviously put a lot of care into it; they have a cooler on the counter where they infuse their vodka with peppers and cucumbers. So for a dive, they're pretty decent mixologists. Last night I asked for a spicy drink and the bartender very nicely indulged me by recommending a number of cocktails he could make spicy and delicious for me (I landed on a spicy cucumber and it was fabulous). Great service. Highly recommend!

I've been here many times before and was a solid place. Went last night and this place is going down hill. Service was veeeerrrryyyy slow and un-attentive. None of them seemed like they even wanted to be there. (Example: Asked for a Dr P. but brought some off brand hoping I wouldn't notice. Took a sip and returned it and just got some water. Waiter still charged me for it.) I know its just a coke but its the principles of the matter. Food was just ok, everything felt soggy, It use to be a lot better I dont know what happened to the place. Wont be going back for a long time. Might even consider waiting in line at Hop Dotty's.

The fried avocado was bland and just not good. The cheese, sauce, chicken, and avocado were all just very bland and blah. The black beans were OK and the rice was uninteresting. However, they have a pretty big menu and I'd like to go back and try more things...

Doc's looks cool. It looks like the kind of place where tattooed greasers might hang out with arty hipster vintage clad types sipping a cold one and listening to eclectic tunes with some rockabilly thrown in for good measure. I wanted it to be that kind of place but unfortunately it wasn't. I've been there 3 times, giving it as much of a chance as possible, hoping each time perhaps a time warp may bring it back to the place I'd envisioned and each time I was disappointed (except for one weekend a year when the roadsters hit SoCo after the Lone Star Roundup car show.) I am always a bit perplexed by the crowd there. So, while I love the outdoor patio and the trendy 50's patio chairs and the vintage chic neon sign, it just ends up coming off as just another sports bar with a few patio chairs. (Have we become so attached to sports on TV that we must be bombarded with it at every venue? I for one have not.) But I digress. Despite its misleading name and sign, it was pointed out to me that, well it IS a sports bar, after all. Somehow I always have ended up leaving there wanting. Wanting to have had a better time. Wanting to have liked the food. Wanting not to have felt I'd been somehow ripped off by the overpriced burgers and beer.

Met a former Austonite friend here for happy hour. The service was fast, the margaritas were good if a little too sweet, my friends drank pitchers of beer and were pleased with the happy hour selection. We shared the Jalapeno Poppers, which were good. But what I was really eyeing were the fried pickles at the table next to us. I will definitely find my way there again to try those! Great spot for happy hour!

It's really not that hard to make a good burger and I'm not sure why so many places seem to get it wrong. The fries were limp and bland and my husbands meal looked pretty awful. It was a dark and stormy night... and so, we went to Gringo Bingo. That seems normal, right? So Doc's isn't my favorite place but the location and the patio (and the pitcher prices) are killer. Gringo Bingo was an inspired idea. It's the mexican loteria... and they find the whitest girl to call out the names/pictures. She chews on the words. If that makes you cringe, this isn't the bingo for you (Check out Tranny @ Joes or Hip Hop @ Union Park.) On the other hand, if you'd rather not deal with paint dobbers and numbers and B I N G O action, then try this memory version of bingo. The pictures are quite entertaining and the prizes more frequent than the other bingo action. Plus there's nothing like a cold dos equis when someone is mis-pronouncing "chupacabra" in the worst/most hilarious way

I don't have a bad thing to say about this place. My hubs and I ended up here with our kiddos on Mother's Day. We had been walking SoCo and ducked in here for a quick bite of late lunch and a beer. It was busy, but we had no problem finding a place to sit. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. She was very knowledgeable on beer and was able to surprise us with some good local flavors. Our food was wonderful. I love avocado so it was only natural that I had the chicken fried avocado and it was delicious. I don't think I would even try anything else on the menu after having that. My hubby had a fish sandwich and said it was good. Two of my kids had bacon cheeseburgers and said they were really good; not the best they've had, but good. My other kiddo had the Lone Star chicken sandwich and said it was the best chicken sandwich he's ever had. The bathrooms were clean and that's a big deal to me. From what my hubby told me, maybe the men's restroom was not the most suitable for young boys. We're pretty open with our kids though so it didn't bother our family. Overall this place was a great experience. I would go back without hesitation either with my family, a group of friends or just a date out with my fella. The atmosphere is fun, the food is yummy and the prices are very reasonable.

I was at work today and decided to pop further down town for some lunch. I hit So Co, looking for a stand out eye catcher. Doc's was it. I loved the whole atmosphere and background music( Joplin, Seger, to name a couple). I couldn't partake in alcoholic beverages (damnit) as I was working, but the water was refreshing. I'm not a pop guy, so bring me beer, water, or some liquored up shit. I have been in the great state of Texas since 1994. I had never heard of frito pie until I moved my ass down here. Well, today, I decided to soberly have my frito pie cherry popped! Yes, I went nasty and ordered the pie with some water. To my surprise the shit was fking good. I was mostly impressed that the frito's were freaking crispy! I was expecting them to be soggy. I liked this place, service, food and water. I have one question though, what gives with the playboy pin ups at the urinals? I think if they are gonna do that, they should also support the other tastes: playgirl. Ha, Ha! How's that for a twist?

Very good! On a sunny Saturday afternoon this place was packed. Cool atmosphere. After being told the wait was an hour & 45 min at HomeSlice Pizza we were lucky to find a table at Doc's. We had fried pickles, wings, Dac'son dogs and beer. Everything was very good. We had to wait about 45 min for food which we were expecting b/c the place was so busy, but the owner & waitress were very apologetic and comp'd our meal b/c of the wait. Great service!! Would def return.

Stopped in solo on a lazy weekday afternoon for the first time. I was heading to Homeslice but I've heard good things about Doc's so I thought I'd give it a try. I am glad I did. Really cool South Austin vibe without being douchy or overtly SoCo. The crowd was small and happy....cops, college kids, hipsters, tourists,...I didn't drink, but the beer choices they have will have me coming back to imbibe in the near future. I ordered the cheeseburger, without cheese, and it was Delicious! Fries are those darker, stringy ones which were also awesome. Carrie was my server is she was nice and friendly. I definitely recommend Doc's. And they have a great patio for people watching but it was too hot that day for me to sit out there.

You have a lot of outdoor seating, and inside seating, with fans and AC and all that shiz. And their are always people at your place! Your staff is always crazy friendly and happy. How long does it take to get a server's attention so that you can request a menu or order a drink? I wouldn't know because we never got anyone's attention even after two separate servers came to the two tables right next to us. They didn't even look at us, no "I'll be right with you", or anything. Pathetic. I guess a 10-minute wait is not long enough. Interesting seeing people who came in after us got service. Yelp needs to allow you to post a NO-STAR review. UPDATE: The manager of the place contacts me to somewhat apologize. Then he informs me that the owner wants me to call him. So that leaves me wondering: if the manager can contact me, why can't the owner? I have to call him? If the owner was really concerned about what went wrong at his place, one would think he'd make a better effort than that. He may also strain something getting out of his throne to answer my call, so I won't put him through that inconvenience. Oh, and my girlfriend reminded me that there was also a third server that day displaying the same perceptive skills as the other two.

This place is horrible. Three of my friends and I came inside to take advantage of the cooler air and shade with some drinks and munchies. It wasn't that crowded- I've seen it way worse during football games. So the waitress was either trained horribly or just didn't give a flying f*ck. She took our drink order about 20 min after we sat down, it took her 20 minutes to bring half of the drinks. Ten minutes later when she was bringing a big tray if drinks and drops them all right behind us. I was splattered with something sticky and it got all over the place. That sucks, I get it. If I were a waitress I would probably do it about once a shift. But this lady doesn't apologize, doesn't ask if we were hurt ir wet from the shattered glass and flying liquids; she looks at us and says "told you I was bringing your Diet Coke". When I had the audacity to ask for a napkin she shot me a look. After that it look us at least 20 minutes to track her down and order food. Which, when delivered, was practically thrown at us, handed across my friend who was sitting closest to the tray and oh, by the way, wasn't even that good. On top of all that, on the first really hit afternoon this year I had to ask for water three times and we finally got it about an hour after getting there. I get that this place isn't a fancy restaurant and I shouldn't expect top notch service. But giving customers nasty looks, being late/rarely coming by, not checking in, and in general not following basic rules of table manners is just downright annoying.

If you mess up admit it and take care of it. This is exactly what happened here. I was initially a bit turned off at the fact that the waitress REEKED of cigarettes, very unappetizing. But she was nice enough and did her job well. Our food came out and I was eating my fries and bit into something way more chewy than it should have been. I pulled a strip of aluminum foil out of my mouth that was buried in the fries. She sent the manager right over and he apologized profusely and comped my meal. They got the extra star for handling a customer service issue very well. Thanks guys for taking care of it, I left satisfied.

Awesome outdoorsy setting for a sports bar/grill that set in heart of SoCo. Not too packed that I can nerd it out on my laptop while watching the MLB Playoffs. The staff there is cool and the ability to download an app on your iFin for listening to the audio on a specific TV is amazing. I enjoyed the food too. It's not your typical generic bar food but something that may appeal to the more healthy foodies out there. Anyway, it meets my criteria in a sports bar so definitely give it a try.

I am really excited about their Wednesday special of $2 Mexican canned beers and $1 crispy tacos. This could become a weekly thing, seriously. It's a great place to hang out on the patio (if it's not 100+ degrees outside) or inside where they have a gajillion tvs in every room with every sporting event you could possibly want to see. I will be frequenting this place for happy hours and just whenever I need a good, cold beer and fast, friendly service. I feel like that space is some prime real estate for something amazing and Doc's just doesn't quite fit the bill. Don't get me wrong. Wife and I decided to go down to SoCo on a Sunday afternoon.. brought the dogs. I like the fact that alot of places are dog friendly, but a lot of places were really packed. We strolled up at Doc's came right in and grabbed a picnic table with shade. our server was nice and attentive, brought the dogs some water. I thought the place was cool. I ordered the buffalo wings and they were tasty. I'd defintiely like to go back for a sunday of NFL football or even watch a UT game. Golly, I don't know why we haven't eaten here before, I guess we were just caught up in the hipness of Austin and fell victim to the latest trends. Docs was great! Plenty of room, prompt service, cold beer and good food. I had the chili cheese burger and a Budweiser. Can't go wrong with that killer combo. Next time we think we want to go into Austin for dinner I will likely suggest this place to avoid all of the "weirdness" which is actually just pretentious college drop outs who have made terrible choices and now resent those of us who didn't.

Yapp Yapp Yappy Hurray! Doc's is now Dog Friendly! 5 stars to the management for listening to their customers! My friend Faith and I recently commented on their Facebook that we would not be there for 1st Thursday cause we could not bring our dogs. They addressed us personally with "Faith, Laura and Tara we're listening and we think you will be pleasantly surprised with Doc's upcoming announcement" Doc's next post was "Doc's is now dog-friendly" This past Saturday my long lost High School friend Chris and I along with his 18 year old son Forest (I do not feel old enough to have an 18 year old - weird feeling) and my 2 dogs spent an awesome late afternoon on their colorful patio. It could have been the company but my fried pickles were pretty awesome and after 2 frozen Margs that hit the spot after a long hot day - I was in a state of bliss.... Forest ordered the Fried Avocado stuffed with Chicken and Cheese and we kind of bonded over it - in a "you want to let me have another bite kind of way:)" And our waitress was spot on. Woke up on Sunday and went back for 2.00 Mimosas with the same 3 cute guys and my girl - I see Doc's as our new go to place!

I visited Doc's with my family during my first trip to Austin, and was excited to enjoy queso, chips, and an ice cold beer outside in the sun. Unfortunately, several aspects of our experience made me feel more frustrated than relaxed. After waiting for several minutes, we snagged a table outside in the sun mid-Saturday afternoon. Our server, Kaela, came over several minutes later, and quickly took our order for a pitcher of beer and queso and ran off. We waited for a bit for our queso to arrive, which is understandable considering the time of day and the beautiful weather outside. When the queso arrived it was a lukewarm and had a skin on the top of it. Edible, but not ideal. We ate chips and cheese for fifteen-twenty minutes with no beer in sight. We were tempted to just ask for our check and leave sans beer, but when we were getting ready to stand up our server ran over hectically with three glasses (for the four people at our table) and a pitcher of beer. The glasses had sticky fingerprints all over them and did not seem clean. We didn't have a chance to ask our server for cleaner glassware, because when she came to drop off the fourth glass she ran away before checking in with us. We sucked it up and drank our beer in less than clean pint glasses and finished our snack. After we were finished, we waited for some time and then just went to the front to ask for our bill. We told the manager inside the restaurant that we were not happy with our service and did not really get a response from him. Our check was dropped a few minutes later and we reluctantly left a small tip for the poor service and left. The only reason I am giving my experience two stars instead of one is that the patio atmosphere and location were perfect. Hopefully Kaela and the rest of the staff can get it together during the busier weekend hours.

Shortly after moving to Austin, we tried this place out. We were (and still are) in search of the great white cheese dip we could get back in GA. We heard Docs had white queso, so we ventured down to So. Congress on a Monday for 2 for 1 burgers and a little site seeing. The Good: We were able to try a taste of the cheese dip before we ordered some. It was ok, but not what we were looking for. I was really glad they let us try before ordering. The Bad: It was a bit crowded. I don't mind crowds too much, but I also like to be able to carry on a conversation without shouting. The ugly: When they brought me my burger and I went to put ketchup on it, the middle of the burger split open and a fountain of grease/juice SHOT out. Not oozed, but shot out like I'd water from a geyser. It completely soaked my hamburger bun. When I mentioned it to the waitress her solution was to bring me a new hamburger bun. Against my better judgement I went ahead and ate the burger, because burgers with a little pink in them are sometimes tasty. It was okay tasting going down, though I didn't finish the burger. It was not okay tasting later that night coming back up.

I love this place. If it is nice out and you do not want to bake in the sun, you can hang out in the garage and still get the great weather. I also fully appreciate that they have activites - especially the ring toss game. Everyone needs a bit of competition. They have tons of beer on tap, so snooty jerks like me can find something delicious to drink. Even though the place is garage-sized, the service it pretty prompt. Huzzah!

The location is great since it is on South Congress and right close to Town Lake. My friend had driven by several times and really wanted to try it out for happy hour. There weren't any stand out drink specials. The specialty drink of the night and beer was only about a $1 off. The food specials were confusing. We thought we were getting good tacos for a $1 but they were school lunch tacos (small and two ingredients). In fact, our server had told us it was two for $1, but that was not the case when we got the check. The seating wasn't very comfortable and the perspiration from the drinks dripped onto our legs through the table, which was pretty jarring when you aren't expecting it. I had a Hybrid which I thought sounded tasty but really was just super sweet. While we were there, we noticed that everyone on the patio with us had designated Doc's as the meet up place. My guess it that is because it is really easy to find. After a while, I noticed that all the servers were girls in short and tight outfits. Now, I don't go to a lot of sports bars, but I get that this is typical for them. It wasn't there clothes that bothered me really; it was the sudden realization of, "oh, so that is why our server isn't paying much attention to us. We aren't planning to tip in ratio to her hotness." Granted, when I first got there, the server we had was attentive and really nice, but when she left and our next server came over to take our order, it was all down hill.

Stopped in for a beer and something to snack on. There was a table placard that said $5 mini dogs during happy hour. I confirmed this with my server (not sure her name or if she ever even told us). I was rushed into ordering a Lone Star because my friend had already ordered. The food was okay. I would be impossible to screw up mini hot dogs. Every interaction with our server was cold and rude. A lack of eye contact or even common courtesy you would expect from a restaurant slinging bar food. A third friend ordered the same five dollar (verbal confirmed by server) hot dogs. When our bill came our dogs were priced at $8.99. We asked what happened to the happy hour discount and our server told us that that special was actually on tuesdays only, even though we ASKED HER TWICE if they were on special. Apparently there was some literal fine print that we didn't read that was on our table placard that said "tuesdays." Without apology or even maybe taking care of her mistake of telling us the wrong price, we we're expected to just eat the cost and pay full price for everything. I work in the restaurant industry and when you make a mistake like that, you're supposed to take care of the problem, not just shrug it off. I left Doc's feeling ripped off completely. We should have just gone to Snack Bar right across the way. Another suggestion to the management would also to create a happy hour menu that is more clear and concise instead of confusing and misleading.

I avoided this place after a few lukewarm experiences, but it was Saturday, I needed a margarita, Doc's was within walking distance and I was too lazy to protest. In the past, I found the drinks to be on the weak side. Service was also extremely spotty and the food was meh. Well, the food is still meh. My tip is to avoid the entrees entirely and just get a few apps. The queso is decent - they make a good 4-layer dip with queso, refried beans, guac, and pico. However, they really need to upgrade their chips! These weren't even as good as the Milagros you can pick up from HEB. The quesadillas and tostadas are also passable. Margaritas were frozen and just the right strength this time. We also had excellent service. It was on the slow side, however. But Doc's does have a great patio, so I will definitely be back. But work on those chips, people of Doc's!

The best selection of local brews on tap! Great atmosphere and tvs to watch sports. My only gripe is that the bartender on Monday night was awful. She couldn't be bothered. Yes, I'm a tourist, and I may act and look like a tourist, but treat me with a little respect, my $ still American. I was visiting Austin for 5 nights and had the best service at all the venues I visited. Love this city! It's a shame she was my bartender on my last night out.

I've been coming here more often lately since I live on this side of town. Even if I didn't, I'd still make the journey to come here. Doc's has a pretty good size patio and is dog friendly with plenty of parking around South Congress and the neighboring streets in the residential areas. There are lots of televisions and they will turn it on a specific game if you ask nicely. The "seat yourself" style is usually not that efficient, but the servers here are very attentive and frequently check on their tables. I like to come here for happy hour and enjoy the sunset outside. Most shots I get are bigger than the 1.5 oz shots that you usually get at bars, so that's a plus. Their food is typical barfood, except for the nachos which are basically just big nachos come in orders of 3 or 6 with toppings already on top of them. I recommend those. Honestly, all of the appetizers are good, but the nachos stand out to me.

Ate lunch there today with my wife. Quick service by a friendly waitress. Wednesday's are $1 tacos, so we both ordered a few. I got one of each, my wife got beef & chicken. Ordered an appetizer of guacamole & chips as well. It was $8 for the guac, which was a bit expensive, but they give you a giant bowl of it that more than made up for the price. Tacos were tasty, as were the drinks. Dog friendly (if seated outside). I'd definitely go back for lunch, especially with the great daily specials they have (Monday's, half-price burgers!).

We were in town for the Capital of Texas Triathlon traveling with our dog. Although, years ago we did live in Austin, sad to say we had not eaten at Doc's. Good thing we had our dog with us because he was there main reason we actually went there as we were looking for a "dog friendly" place. Plus at the time we arrived it was the busy lunch time. Did we ever score! The patio was comfortable and relaxing...we felt like we were at home and were able to talk (OK we missed out the years we lived there we will admit) there was no stress for us before a race and what we were looking for. Our waitress was awesome and although she was handling a "ton of tables" gave everyone personal attention. Score! Our dog even got personal attention too, from her. My husband had a burger (dog too) which were so lean there were no fat. Obviously, racing the next food is important to us and this was a big factor. We were incredibly impressed with the quality of the meat. My salad which was a chicken was awesome. It actually was more than I could eat as was the burger for my husband...so our dog was able to also enjoy the chicken and half of his burger. Our dog ate well that day! Again, we missed out while we were in Austin. After the race, we wanted to have a celebration meal there however, it WAS Memorial Day and close to noon. Wanting to beat traffic we thought best to head home. But Docs is on our our list of "Go to Places" now for whenever we are in Austin!

I really want to like this place, but ALAS, it's just not my scene. The food is 'okay.' The waitstaff is usually busting their tail covering upwards of 50 tables at a time (it seems). And to top it off, the sports thing just doesn't do it for me, and forget about asking them to put on sports you actually CARE about. Sure, they serve cold beer in an 'icehouse' setting, but there are way better places not too far off that offer the same thing and do it better. Wednesday's are a decent day to go though, $1 tacos and $2 mexican beers (except Corona, I think). Honestly, on par with Taco Bell quality though...nothing to get excited about.

I may be a bit biased as I can walk to this place but I think I grow more and more fond of this bar every day. First of all, every day of the week they have food specials and the food is GOOD. Mondays specifically are half off burger nights, my fav! Secondly, they have BINGO on Tuesday! It is REALLY fun and always crowded so show up early to get a table. Third, they are always showing whatever sports game you want to see. Last but not least, they have outdoor seating that is perfect for nice days. Oh and they always have drink specials every night! Can't believe I left talking about alcohol for last. I must be slipping...

On one of our many trips to SOCO we finally decided to give Doc's a try. Usually it looks busy and the people generally look happy, so we went for it. After all, it was snack and booze time! A pet peeve of mine is confusing places to eat and drink. This almost became one. Thankfully they must be used to that awkward gaze that people have when they come in and we were promptly told to find a seat anywhere. The day was pretty so we sat outside and promptly began to plan how we were going to steal the tables and chairs. We make a quick assessment of their drink menu, and I noticed they serve up a black velvet. I love a black velvet and ordered a little hastily, as my woman found pink lemonade. UV pink lemonade in pink lemonade. DAMN! I wanted that... We were ready to eat, but only wanted a snack. We had been talking about stuffed jalapenos recently and decided to give their rendition a go. Coming from the coast we are used to seeing these things stuffed with seafood, so we were very intrigued by their chicken and multi cheese stuffing. Very good! We finished up our drinks, and asked our waitress if we could get a diet coke to go. She promptly brought one out, apologized they didn't have a lid and we were on our merry way. Next time on SOCO and its time to eat we will try Doc's again and try an entree or something. They have a crazy amazing selection of apps so who knows what we will end up with, beyond a happy belly and a good story.

I just found out the Pflugerville location is closed...oddly enough I have moved south recently, so I now frequent the southern location instead...coincidence? Never reviewed this location but it is seriously solid so I'd like to give it a shout out. Things I love about Doc's: The Hybrid. Some kind of frozen marg mess made with alternative fuel - the strongest, best-tasting "marg" ever. All sorts of specialty beer drinks (a shit-ton of drinks in general, and great daily specials) 4-Layer bean dip (white queso rocks!) The patio: tons of seating, in or out, covered or uncovered, right along Congress. Perfect to enjoy Texas weather, and excellent people watching. TVs are clutch too. The white queso. Cute and nice waitresses. Things I don't like about Docs: Parking is always a bitch.

It will be difficult for me to say something about Doc's that Jessica A. hasn't already, considering we were there at the same time and ordered the same thing. But here goes. I've been to Doc's on a few occasions for beers with friends. 2 for 1 burger night seemed as good a night as any to try their food. I had the Bleu Cheese & Peppercorn Sauce Burger, hoping for something similar to the one served at Waterloo Ice House. But the patty tasted like it had been frozen and was so greasy that the peppercorn bleu cheese sauce tasted weird. We also discovered that fries don't come with the burgers on 2 for 1 burger night, but you wouldn't know that from looking at their menu. To drink I had a couple of draft Shiner Hefeweizens. The beers were good, but the lemons served with them were mushy. I wonder where they kept them...on second thought, I don't want to know. Doc's has a great location and an excellent patio for hanging out and people watching. But you pay for the atmosphere since the food and service are mediocre at best.

So last Wednesday night my at Work Hag and I decided to have a little happy hour adventure. Well we wanted to go somewhere we haven't been before so we popped in on Doc's. My first impression was that it seemed like every other bar. Big patio open air insides. Well I cant even remember what the happy hour specials were except that the crispy tacos were $1 but you had to order at least 2. So we decided to order two of the three selections. Chicken, beef, and bean and cheese. We also ordered chips and salsa. The salsa was weak to the extreme and the chips were kinda stale. The tacos were just ok. Nothing fancy or spectacular spectacular. The crowd was mix. Your indie hipster to your meat head jock. My friend had a margarita which wasn't too shabby. I had a Stella and for some reason our waitress wasn't around enough cause I needed another beer and I only had one. Since we didn't want to wait to get another drink we just left after closing and it was about 20 bucks or so. I think this place would be better if there were lots of people there in a large group but I think its just one of those places that I would never go out of my way to go. But if I was in the area and with a crowd I would pop in again.

Very cool sports bar with a different feel than you would expect from a sports bar. Going for lunch is a very pleasant experience since there usually aren't many people there yet. Going in the evening/night is a different story as it starts to fill up during happy hour. It is still great but the service is slower and doesn't have the same relaxing feel. Their happy hour specials and daily specials are amazing and I have gone there multiple times just to eat $1 tacos on a Wednesday when I didn't feel like cooking. Their regular menu items are excellent also. The burgers, buffalo chicken sandwich, flautas and stuffed avacado are all excellent choices. Great place to go with a group, grab some food and drinks and maybe catch a game. If it's busy then keep in mind the service may be a little slow but that is the only real downside

Food is pretty Blech... we got cold, soggy fries, very average nachos, and queso that turned rock hard in about 20 minutes. Drinks weren't much better, thier super small margarita was about $5 and too sweet, though the list of local beers was cool....then we had to see the drunk frat boys carrying the drunk sorority girls to thier Escalade and tear off down Congress..... Really not my kind of place. 2 stars for the very nice, very helpful and very efficient server...she was awesome.

Tonight I visited Doc's for the 2nd time. I overall think my first visit was better, which is why i'll stay at a 3 stars. The first visiit, I went on the last first Thursday (August). It was pretty slow, so service was pretty quick. I work in the restaurant business, so I consider myself considerate when it comes to greeting a table. We were greeted in a timely manner, explained the drink specials, and had our drinks, alongside menu's fairly quickly. Food was great & server was attentive. Tonight is another story. I arrived around 8:30 pm with my sister & a friend. We sat ourselves, as expected, on the patio and awaited the arrival of a server.....3 minutes pass......5 minutes pass...finally, about 7-8 minutes after we sat down, we were approached by a server. She wasn't very friendly, and never told us her name. She took our drink order (3 beers plus 2 waters), and then we watched her sit down at a stool near the server station. A few minutes later, our beers arrive...but no water.....she then disappeared......still no water. she finally swings by to check on us and we ask about the water...she returns shortly with them. I was frustrated. Being in the industry I understand the difference between being busy and hating your job....she clearly was the latter of the 2. Anyways- The food is always decent, but the service is iffy.... ps- the stuffed avocado is a hit :)

Been here many times. I always go because this is one of the few places that I know off hand that has Blue Moon on tap. Nothing like a good pint of Blue Moon or two. Their brownie/ice cream dessert is amazing! Its huge and its plenty for 4 people. The rest of their food is ok - Standard bar/sports bar atmosphere food. I wouldn't consider this a "dinner" stop. They have variety and if you are wanting something casual they have plenty of options. Its a great place for groups with indoor and outdoor seating. I got introduced to this place through the Austin Sports and Social club and have been at Docs a few times because of that. Doc's used to (maybe still do) sponsor some of the sports leagues. I like coming here for a beer and to catch up and talk with friends. Very relaxing environment. The only reason why I gave it 3 stars vs 4 is that the service is always lacking. They definitely need to have more servers. I sat around for 10 minutes before someone even came to take a drink order and thats pretty common and standard for Docs. Its self seating, just dont expect to sit down and have someone be there 10 seconds later. I will say that they do have drink specials, but if the drink isnt on special it seems to be a little more expensive than they should be.

I like this place a lot, they have great nightly specials and texas tuesdays are my favorite! The bartenders are great and the atmosphere is very relaxed. I have yet to try to the food, but it always looks like pretty decent bar food. Great selection of tap beers too, I just wish they stayed open later than midnight during the week.

It's not that I _don't_ like Doc's. I suppose it's a good place to go when you have a group of people who just want to hang out and talk. There's just nothing that compels me to go there... unless it's my dodgeball team. BUT the Doc's bartenders broke the cardinal rule of fruit with beer last night: they brought lemons with our Blue Moon pitcher. Blue Moon gets oranges. I'm not normally fancy, but I have a strict rule of pairing the right beer with the right fruit. That's just how it's meant to be. Other than the beer slip up, things weren't terrible. Our server was very friendly, so definitely no complaints there. And the sweet potato fries were tasty. But it just isn't enough to get me to go back there unless it's an after-dodgeball team outing.

Great place to watch the game or just meet up with some friends. The frito pie is a staple here and it really hits the spot. The servers have always been nice in my experience and I've never had a problem with their drinks or food. Just a nice Austin spot that should be experienced by everyone at least once. The bikers love this place and their patio is great for dogs.

An okay place to watch a game I guess...except that the acoustics inside are awful, so you're literally having to scream at people at your table to talk to them when it gets busy. Food is pretty sub-par. Friend of mine got a grilled chicken platter or some nonsense...it literally looked like they threw an unseasoned chicken breast on a foreman and served it with some sad looking lettuce and sliced tomato. It too can be yours for $11.99! (ugh). They have all your standard beers on tap. Go here if there is just nowhere else you can find to watch a game. I'd rather even go to Pluckers.

I have been here once, and my opinions follow closely to my friend Ergnst who was unearthed/unfrozen only 2 years ago. As a result I am translating what he thinks of this place because he was one of the first to grasp language. You see he is a Homo habilis (Fyrst bygl), and contrary to several theories, he spoke just fine in his day (Fuck you Homo erectus!!--he wanted me to be sure to convey that to everybody). Anyway, on to the review! Doc's is like a sunset over bones of recently killed glrbls (early antelope?) by plgls (lions?) that we are lucky enough to scavenge. Unfortunately, the hamburgers taste like snbbls (similar to our onions), and cost a pklll (arm) and a blblll (leg). Ergnst wants me to be sure to point out that the waitress was fine as hell (my best translation) with erggls sprggls (fine birthing hips) and spttls pttlgrs (incredibly luscious tits). Well said Ergnst!!

I've walked past this place so many times, it's almost criminal that I've never been here. Yet, even now, I've not tried any food. And the lovely experience I had was more due to my company. And WHAT company it was! After the madness of my sxsw event, I was fortunate enough to get to hang out with some of the burlesque dancers who'd come into town and performed at my event. One lovely lady from London told me she and her friend were hanging out at Doc's. Not to miss an opportunity to hang out with a lovely redhead with a killer accent, I headed that way. I do love me a good patio, and Doc's doesn't disappoint in this regard. I ended up sharing a table with not one but five, count 'em FIVE, lovely ladies that night. The beer was flowing and the conversation was outstanding. So much so, that I forgot that I was only supposed to be there for an hour or two. As 11pm approached, I was getting famished. I'd tried to get our waitress' attention a few times to grab a food order. In fact, one of the ladies at our table managed to order food. And yet, our waitress seemed only too happy to drop things and then run away as quickly as possible. When our waitress had to leave and passed us on to another, much more attentive server, whom I finally got to ask about food. Alas, she informed me that their kitchen was closed. Curses! Still, the patio was nice, the beer selection was decent, and the company was better than most any single man in Austin could hope for.

Filthy tables and the oppressive odor of bathroom cleanser met us when we walked in the door. Loud, obnoxious crowd -- very happy, very intoxicated regulars who seemed to like the place a lot. Definitely not a good place for kids. The construction makes noise reverberate so this not the place to drop into if you want to have a conversation with your companions. Better choices would include the tarmac of a major airport or the floor of a factory. I had visited before and been pleased but my most recent visit turned me off. If I visit again, I'll re-review but that is unlikely.

I happened to go here last Saturday to catch the UT game and more importantly the Red Sox. I've been here a few times and have had a good time both times, but nothing that really made it a stand out from any other pub in Austin. The good: -Lot's of TVs -Okay food - I had the Tostadas (sp?) and some fried pickles -They do serve beer -The Red Sox won -Good service The Bad: -They charge for chips and salsa???! Good salsa though -The TV's are pretty awkwardly placed and some of them don't work too well. -The weird old fat guy who shook his man-boobs at us multiple times (apparently he is a regular because everyone acted like they knew him) - No parking lot -The Red Sox lost the series ;( I'll probably go back eventually, but it's not going to be high on my to-do list.

Doc's has a great patio for hanging out with friends, but the food is just so-so. Last time, I had the fried egg sandwich and it was one of the best things I've had there. The burgers are just OK, and the fries could seriously use a makeover. Probably the best appetizer on the menu is the queso, but I wish they had thinner chips for dipping. The location means that I'll be back, but I wish that it was the food, not the location, that kept dragging me here. Maybe the key is to come for a pitcher of beer -- after dinner.

This restaurant has a open area that's shaded with A/C and a patio outside. Great place to have a couple of drinks with some pals or watch the game. There's about 6 tvs, I believe. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Even after I spilled a glass of water across the table and on myself. Unfortunately, the food is a bust. I'm not sure what kind of batter they use, but it does no good in the crispy category. The onion rings were hard and not crunchy. Neither were the fries, more of soggy and oily. The chicken strips were dipped in the same batter and so was the fried avocado. The burger was all right, not too bad. The salsa was pretty good, they make it themselves with roasted tomatoes. But the chips were store bought. I wouldn't come back here for the food. Maybe for a margarita and watch the game.

This place has been one of my groups "go to" places for years now. They have great specials every single day. $1 Taco night on Wednesday night is dangerous with $2 Mexican Beers. They have a great patio! I went here for my first Sunday Football experience this past week and thought they did a great job of being prepared. They had a map out at 11:30 with what games would be on what televisions. I will say as nice as the big televisions are they could use an upgrade on the other televisions. Good brand and nice picture, but you could spring for a few more inches on those. Also just like most bars in Austin they feature the Cowboy's game over the Texans. That is just normal though in Austin sadly. They had $9 pitchers of Miller Lite on Sunday which is a pretty good deal as well. The wait staff here has always been pleasant and helpful as well. I would recommend going to this place especially on a nice day. It is a open air environment and when the weather is good they are very packed. The porch is dog friendly as well. I have always liked this place and really do not have anything bad to say. They have been consistent over the years and I know what I am getting when I go there.

Doc's is a great stand-by sports bar. I never think to go here but I have a couple friends who love it here to watch a game. It is normally pretty packed during football season. The service can be a toss up. Sometimes you get a great waitress who is more than eager to offer you another beer (not in a bad way) and sometimes you get an absentee waitress! It is standard bar food. My favorite thing to order is the nachos. Doc's has cheap beer specials, good bar food, a nice patio and plenty of tvs...you can't really go wrong.

I visit Doc's about once a month or so. It's the perfect patio right on South Congress...great for a pint, some grub and to people watch. Also, any place that lets us bring our dog, gets an extra star! Went there this past weekend for the New Year. I had the South Austin Scramble. Really tasty plate of food - very filling and I find their prices reasonable. Our waiter was attentive and super cool. We got there around 11:30 on Saturday and had plenty of tables to choose from and by Noon it was pretty packed.

I think Doc's is the kind of place that you need to really enjoy gut-filling food and not try anything too crazy. You should really just sit outside, eat fatty bar food, and enjoy South Congress. I took a friend here after he had not eaten all day, and we just feasted on their chili cheese fries. Dear God, this 5000-ish calorie mound of fries, cheese, beefy chili, sour cream, was already tasty. Then, we lifted up your fries, and lo and behold, there was a whole other pool of white cheese beneath. This huge portion of fries got sandwiched with artery-clogging goodness. The nachos are not too bad. The chicken fajita ones had chicken, a nice spread of refried beans, and a thick layer of cheese. I am normally not one to go for simple food, but when you are at a nice outdoorsy place like this. it is really hard not to enjoy things as soul-filling as fries and nachos. Especially when you know that you are eating 3 days worth of fat.

So, it's about noon on a Sunday, and you need the hair of the dog. Thing is, you went out last night, so where can you go to recover and not spend a lot? Doc's. $2 mimosas on Sundays. 'Nough said. I really wish I could say more for this place--it's got a pretty okay atmosphere, pretty alright clientele and some fairly excellent specials. The thing is this: there's nothing that sets it apart from the other bars in town. Yeah, it's in SoCo and not downtown, so there's that. But so what? That's location, and it's a difference of a few miles. Yeah, the people in SoCo tend to be a bit older (and maybe a little less raucous) than the folks in downtown, but, hey, we're reviewing the venue, not the people. So what makes Doc's different? Truthfully, I'm still trying to figure it out.

During the Road Rally a few weeks ago, My Sweetie and I explored South Congress and got to see a bunch of pre-1963 hot rods and a ton of Betty Pages and guys with matching car shop shirts and slicked back hair. We stopped in Doc's for the first time and enjoyed the open garage theme, a Fireman's Four, a tequila, and some muy processed chicken flautas. (IMHO, this is a DRINKING establishment = BYOF.ood) "We will trade that chair for a joke," I say with confidence to a guy in a Lost Cause t-shirt and Speed Shop cap who has just asked for the chair next to My Sweetie as if it were really mine to barter. I learned several years ago that this is the best way to part with a valuable chair and, because I am the kind that cannot remember a joke for more than a week, it helps me to have a joke on hand, when needed. "For a joke?" Lost Cause/Speed Shop guy stammers and then says something about performance anxiety... ("Don't worry, you will RISE to the occasion..." I thought) "OK, uhh, two guys who had been friends since elementary get together once a year to talk about life and share ideas. Even though their lives have gone in very different financial directions, they both enjoy the other's company and always seem to learn a lot from their interactions. They meet right before Valentine's Day and the wealthy one says he is going to get his wife a large diamond ring and a Mercedes. His friend asks 'Why both... one or the other would seem like enough to me.' 'Well, I will give her the diamond and if she doesn't like it, she can drive to the store with her new car and exchange the diamond for one she likes better.' They continue to talk about other things and part, each looking forward to their next conversation. Doc's was okay. It really felt like a standard "theme" restaurant that could be in any location across the globe. Yeah, I'm a snob, but I expect more out of my Austin eateries/bars ;). The service is good, but not great. I think it really depends on which server you get and there doesn't seem to be much quality control overall. The food was overpriced and just okay. The Queso Fries just had regular cheese on them (boo!), the burger was your standard Friday's / Chili's fare. Like I said A-OK (hence the three stars), but there are better options, especially in Austin.

I hate Doc's, but, in truth, I feel a touch sad for it. It's not too bad a place, really, if not completely straightforward. The food is fine enough, the service is usually fantastic, and the drink specials and various events make it a place worth keeping in your rolodex. But, as an Austinite, I feel obligated to hate this place for one, unwavering, unsophisticated reason: Doc's REEKS of douchebaggery. It's the antithesis of Austin, rather a bit of Dallas transplanted directly into our unassuming, beloved SoCo. Perhaps it's unfair to judge a place purely based on it's clientele. Perhaps I'm just being an Austin elitist (check that, I totally am, welcome to Austin). Maybe I should give Doc's the benefit of the doubt and cast it as the victim to the rampant wave of yuppie douchebaggery that has emerged all over South Congress. But, God help me, I can't help it. I'm sorry, Doc's, but the people that frequent your little abode are bringing down SoCo...and you're pandering to it. Nonetheless, Doc's has an unbeatable location that has served as the ending point to many a Soco romp, and if you're able to see the place as something more than just an icon of gentrification you'll be able to sit on the patio and finish a few pitchers with pleasure. It's also a great place to have a drink and take in a game, be it Spurs or Longhorns or NFL playoffs. Just don't scratch the BMWs on the way out.

I decided to move inside right in front of the bar..no one came. I made eye contact with two people that worked on the floor while they chit chatted. Needless to say I left after 20mins...

Docs is another great Austin restaurant that allows my two furry family members. When we've been out at the dog parks downtown we sometimes end up at Docs for some Ice Tea. Sitting outside, big glass of tea, on South Congress, with my two huge animals? What could be better? Well... the food. Docs has everything going for itself... great location, amazing patio, and cool atmosphere, but where they lack is good food. It's not that the food is bad, it's just normal food. It feeds you. You're not going to be spitting it out, but you won't be loving every bite. We usually go and split an appetizer, something to get us through the day... and get us out of Docs for under 15 dollars. There are many reasons to go to Docs... the food isn't one of them. Go drink some beers, enjoy the atmosphere, take your dog friends, your normal friends, and order the nachos.

Okay, so the service wasn't horrible but it wasn't The Ritz either. Aside from having a few waitresses that are very easy on the eyes, we apparently sat in the "invisible section" until our secret location was accidentally revealed and somebody helped us. I will say that their steak nachos are great but refreshing our beers was slow (especially when it's hot as hades outside). Note: if you want really speedy service buy a t-shirt from the athletic club that meets there regularly. They seem to get a lot of attention from the service staff. All in all, I will probobaly return but I'll make sure to avoid the invisible section next time.

I've only been here a handful of times but I just never walk away fully satisfied. The first time, hubs and I hit up happy hour and grabbed food. We both tried mexican options, and the food was just OK. I probably wouldn't try mexican there again. Second time around we met a friend there for a pitcher and some apps. I think we had some chili cheese fries which were good. Pitcher was cheap. Third time around, we had fried mushrooms which were awesome. Each time we went the service was iffy. Waiter/waitress would take kind of long to get around to us for drink orders. Then it was a little long to actually get our drinks, and then once I was brought the wrong drink. Their outdoor patio setting is nice. It's dog friendly, so if I had a dog I'd probably go there more.

Service was less than pleasing, the waitress forgot one of our burgers and had trouble splitting up the check for 3 people. Food was terrible. The burger and chicken sandwich tasted like they took it out of the Sysco truck and threw it on the grill. Fries were lukewarm. I have been to Doc's before for drinks and it was fun but today's experience made me want to find a different SOCO hang out.

I was in Austin for SXSW, and by the last day, my coworkers and I had had it with the long lines and crowds in downtown. We skipped off to South Congress which is a pretty laid-back scene to begin with. I love Doc's patio. It's really big and the tables are picnic style, so it's great for a big group. The drinks were strong, but not as strong as they could have been. The happy hour menu did not disappoint- Tito's Vodka was on special (hell yeah!), so my drinks were $3 all night. I had the blackened tilapia with mixed veggies for dinner but I think the greasy food would have been a better option ( the fried pickles were awesome). All in all it was a decent experience. The wait staff was friendly and the atmosphere is what you would expect out of Austin. But I will say... watch out for the hipsters... they're everywhere!

Doc's is a great people-watching spot. With its location right on Congress, you pretty much get a microcosm of what Austin, particularly South Austin, is all about. Good points? I like the open-air patio and casual atmosphere. I shared a basket of fried mushrooms, and they were the tastiest I've had in a while. Their Capital Salad was also excellent. I loved the apple cider vinagrette since I was refraining from having my usual Woodchuck Amber with dinner. All of the burgers my friends ordered looked mighty good, too. And of course, they have a wonderful selection of beers. Negatives? Because of its location, finding a parking space can be difficult. The food can be a bit pricey. The service for large groups (we had a party of 8) left a lot to be desired. All in all, pretty decent for a laid back happy hour spot.

this was my first time visiting this bar, it was for a friend birthday. Great location and the outdoor tables are great idea. The only thing I hate was how many times I have to ask for a glass of water. Either hire more staff or don't assign to many tables to your staff to serve. This was my only issue, I started recommending this place to my co-worker's already. I will be going back for happy one of this days with my friends.

Doc's has always held a special place in my heart. I ended up going to Doc's on what happened to be their grand opening night. They were serving free beers and free appetizers. I drank and ate for free all night and played several games of shuffleboard. I like the patio outside which stays pretty toasty in the winter when they roll down the plastic sheeting to enclose it. The indoors is cozy and intimate, with plenty of seating and yet still room to move around.

I want to say up front that I'd like to give this place 2.5 stars. I used to eat there all the time when it first opened, what?, five years ago or something. I won't say that it's gone downhill based on my experience today, but let me get a few things clear before I launch into my review. I signed in using Foursquare, and read the tips. There were about 19 of them, which is a lot for one business, in my opinion. One of them was spam; local realtor posting his business information and saying to contact him if you need a place to live. Nice, huh? A friend describes spam as driving to a neighbourhood other than your own, spraying the walls with spray paint, and then driving back to your own neighbourhood. But I digress. Another tip said Doc's had the worst food in the world, but that it had a great patio. Really? Worst food in the world? I've eaten at a lot of restaurants, and Doc's is hardly the worst. Maybe the person who left that tip hadn't had much experience eating out. The last tip I noted said that the burgers were always overcooked. So my friend and I ordered: He had a grilled chicken salad of some sort. I asked for the Heart Stopper Buger. It had lettuce, tomato, beef, bacon, pimento cheese, and a fried egg. I asked for light lettuce, for the meat to be cooked medium, and for the egg to be fried over hard. Anyone care to guess how the meat was cooked? You guessed it! Well done. The waitress said she put medium on the ticket; it obviously wasn't medium, but it also wasn't the worst food in the world. She offered to have it recooked, but by then I was nearly a third of the way through the burger, and I didn't want to waste food. A cow and a pig died for that burger. A chicken probably died, too, but that has more to do with inhumane treatment of egg-laying chickens, and really, don't get me started. It doesn't take much. The fries were perfect! Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfectly salted. I could imagine returning and just ordering a platter of those fries. For what you get, the food is pretty pricey. My burger was $10. The ticket came to $22.75, and I left the waitress appropriate gratuity.

Super fun, festive, loud, and awesome during SXSW. I'm a tourist and for me it was a great experience (and I usually hate sports bars.) Being right on South Congress and being able to people watch on a gorgeous spring afternoon made it extra fun. It was crowded but we were seated in the patio promptly and our server was cheerful and sweet. I ordered a steak fajita salad and it was SO GOOD! The steak was flavorful, juicy and delicious. I wish I could be eating that salad right now! When I ordered my Arnold Palmer the server asked me if I wanted it spiked. Now, that's my type of server. Unfortunately, I'm still nursing my little one so I had to skip on the vodka.

This place has only one flavor of wings, and it is delicious! Other than that, the food is standard, kind of sub-par bar food but some decent beer specials and when the weather's nice and there's a game I want to watch, I head to Doc's Motorworks. Right in SoCo, you can just sit outside and eat and drink all day, and that's a great thing!

Enjoy the patio, like the decor, the wait staff is always nice. This waitress memorized the order of our flag football team and nailed it 100%. It was pretty impressive. I don't know if they advertise themselves as dog friendly but we've ended up there after our games and we happen to have our Boxer and they always bring her water. The parking does kind of suck but there has never been an instance where we don't find a slot around the back or directly adjacent to Doc's. I enjoy their Buffalo Chicken Sandwich with some melted provolone. Their margaritas are decent, not outstanding. They do have a good array of televisions showing all kinds of sports so that is a definite plus for all of the sports fanatics.

Docs is a your "basic bar". No frills, no really.. none. The food is pub grub at best, but the service is always friendly. You pay for the view and it does not disappoint. I enjoy watching the Soco crowd cruise by with a day drink in hand. *Highly recommend the Paloma (its not on the menu, btw). Pint-size, reasonably priced, and tasty combo of Fresca, Tequila, and Lime Juice.

My friends and I ventured down to Doc's one Friday evening when the wait @ most of the other SoCo restaurants was an hour and a half. We had never been to Doc's, but we were STARVING...so we decided to give it a try without knowing anything about the place. We walk up and they have a pretty nice crowd, but there were still plenty of tables open. They have a really great patio area & some misters to keep you a little cooler (although they kind of just made it feel more humid to me?). Anyways, we found an open table for the 6 of us without a problem. The food was actually pretty good. I had a veggie burger which was bigger than any other veggie burger I've had @ a restaurant and I really liked it. The fries were FANTASTIC. One of my friends had the chicken fried avocado and he can't stop talking about how good it was. I can't remember what my other friends had, but they all seemed pretty satisfied as well. Their beer prices weren't stellar, which was definitely the biggest negative of our experience. If you're in the SoCo area though, and you don't feel like waiting a long time...definitely check out Doc's. It was a very pleasant surprise.

Watched non-local NFL games here this past Sunday. Well-labeled TVs, each game was on more than one, plenty of room. It's great to watch the game outside on the patio too. We ordered a burger to split and they brought it in 2 separate baskets, already cut in half, which was nice. The burger was tolerable but I wouldn't order another one. No done-ness options, just very well done, kind of dry with the wheat bun. The waitress asked if we were "okay" tons of times when we were clearly just drinking beer. It got to be annoying but she seemed to mean well. I would go back to watch football or to people-watch on Congress but not for the food.

I wish I had more good things to say about Doc's. I really wanted to love this place because it is in such a great location. But, alas, according to my experience, it was not the case. My friend and I arrived early on a weekday night. We were pleased to find that they were still serving $2.00 happy hour Texas beers. We sat around for awhile more before deciding to order some chips and salsa to munch on. The salsa was outstanding, but hot!!! This, in turn, made me drink more beer faster in order to cool my mouth down. Now, I'll get to the part where I start to get annoyed. We bought some Camel cigarettes from the restaurant, and asked for matches twice that never came. Then, we when finally borrowed a light from someone else sitting on the patio, the manager comes running over and says that we can't smoke here...not here on the patio, in general...just here at our particular table (I guess we were too close to the door). This really annoyed me, because one of the reasons I choose to sit outside is so that I can enjoy a smoke if I want. So by this time, we've both got to go to the bathroom. Evidently, they wanted to get rid of us or the they thought we were going to run out on the bill or something because a waitress came in the girls bathroom and handed my friend our bill. Annoying! We both wanted to go back, sit down and finish our drinks after we went to the bathroom, but by the time we went back to our table, it had already been cleared. Thanks for being so hospitable, Doc's.

Stopped by with my girlfriend to see why the place is so popular...still not sure why. Instantly, my girlfriend (who admittedly has a sensitive nose) detected a barn-like smell that I couldn't disagree with. The picadillo nachos were surpisingly tasty, easily the best of the dishes we tried. Chicken fried avocado was interesting, but a bit bland. The rice and beans were FAR below average. Girlfriend's fried fish tacos were OK, but probably would have been better if blackened. Definitely more of a sports bar vibe than a restaurant, so keep that in mind if you are thinking about a visit.

The highlight of Doc's is the patio to me - great spot for sitting in the sun, people watching, and hanging out. Service was good and the Michelada de la Luna drink (sort of a mix of a Negra Modelo and Bloody Mary) was tasty. Try the Chicken Fried Avocado - it tastes a lot better than it sounds. Bathrooms were as grimy as you could expect for a bar, but good entertainment on the walls at the urinals.

Beautiful outside? Want to grab a cold beer and enjoy the day while people watching on SoCo? If so, then Doc's is your place. Great patio outside with plenty of comfortable chairs and a great view of the SoCo sidewalk. Usually lots of eye candy here as well... If you're hungry or want to sit inside and watch some sports, then Doc's is not so great. Food is so-so at best, service is generally lacking, and although they have a lot of TVs in here, there are quite a few spots where there just isn't a good TV to look at. The Austin Sports and Social Club is often here in mass for the social portion of their evening, right after sweating it up during the sporting portion of their evening, so depending upon how you feel about that... Maybe avoid the really warm days... Make sure to visit the men's room - the "Must be 18 or older to view" sign cracks me up. Center urinal. Check it.

I absolutely love this place!! When the weather is good this is the place to be! They have great specials on beer and food. Half price burgers on mondays. On Tuesdays, all the Texas beers are only 2.50. They have tons of draft beer. It is a hot spot and can be really crowded but for good reason. The service is great, but if you think you are the most important person in the place you probably shouldn't go. I realize when I go to a place like this things might take a little longer. It's totally worth making a trip to check it out as part of your soco experience.

Have loved this place in the past, however one night left the worst taste in my mouth. WILL NEVER go to ANY of the locations, again!!!! Went out for a round or two after a football game with some Marine friends of mine. We got a call that a Marine post FROM Texas, with some of their buddies stationed in Iraq had been ambushed & the news was all over the local KEYE TV station, so we asked to have ANY one of the 20 tvs put on the channel. The server told us that management said it COULD NOT be done, because basketball was on. Note there was NOT any championship games on, or anything important mind you & 5 of the tvs were showing the same game. So I asked for a manager & was indeed told no, they wouldn't turn it. Does Texas not support its soldiers? Did they just not want to go through the hassle of walking 20 feet to change a tv? RIDICULOUS, no support for troops, no support from me! A SIMPLE request that would have made 4 Marines, currently on leave from Iraq for 2 months before they go back, VERY happy, WOULDN'T be done. DISAPPOINTING! Blacklisted - YES

***Disclaimer: I am a restaurant Manager, sometimes my reviews are a bit harsher than what some might think, but I am very critical*** Doc's... I discovered you a few months ago while you have been open a lot longer than that. It seemed like the place to stop in a check out on my quest for my TOP restaurants in the Austin area. The first time I visited, I only ate and had no alcohol... so I cant write about the drinks, yet. I had the Bandera chicken which was a grilled chicken with cheese and bacon melted on top. I have to say, I thought it was excellent, and I would return JUST for this item alone. We sat on the patio in the shade and had a decent time. The waiters take a bit of time, but their sections apparently spread out across the entire restaurant. Second time I went, I had the beef enchiladas with the red sauce. I had some beer..... I dont drink beer, but it seemed like they had nothing that looked good and at the time, I didnt want to be the guy who DIDNT have a drink in front of them... trying to expand my palate here, be patient with me. I hated the beer, didnt work for me... so I tried one of their specialty drinks that they had on the other side of the menu and I hated it as well.... I love Vodka, hands down.... but the drink just didnt taste good to me. When I think of the name of it, I will edit this post and let you know..... in the meantime..... I went back today, our server was nice. I dont think I have ever had one say their name to me though, she was patient, timely and very plesant. My boyfriend LOVES the white Cheddar Queso, Fajitas and Chicken Fried Steak... He says the food is pretty good for a sports bar type place.... I was sad today to go to the bathroom and realize there is NO A/C in the hallway to the bathrooms nor in the restrooms themselves... it was almost sweltering and I felt like I was in an outhouse. Seems like they are PACKED at night, so I would suggest going during happy hour (if you are a beer drinker those are their ONLY happy hour specials), or early in the day... that way you avoid the rush and you can sit where you like.

I have had some real highs and lows with this place. The drink prices are on the high side but do pack a punch and the location is fantastic. I have had some of the worst service in Austin before here as well which is why I had not come to Docs in a couple months. I am happy however that I decided to mosey in on a Monday afternoon a while back. The bartender was not only attentive but friendly as hell. I have come in before, mainly at night, and gotten attitude but this girl was a doll! I wish I could remember her name but if you go in look for the cute brunette with a lip ring make sure to take a seat at the bar and order a cold one.

Doc's is great when you want to sit outside and chill. I've only hit it up during the day for lunch or happy hour. They don't have an extensive variety for vegetarians, but I've tried their veggie burger, a roasted veggie sandwich, and queso, and they're all decent. Prices are a little high, but it's just a couple bucks. Service is friendly but sometimes a little slow- again, that's just during the day. I love the old-school tulip chairs and picnic tables.

Good place. Lots of tail runnin around. That was the best part. It's a young crowd for sure. I loved the atmosphere. It's got garage doors to open up the inside to the outside. I was there around Xmas, so it was cool outside and they had the outdoor heaters on. I enjoyed the food quite a bit. There was a good selection of beer. Prices were very reasonable. 9 times out of 10, I hate this place. It's too crowded, too hot for the summer or too cold for the winter, too full of tourists or the frat scene. However, on occasion, a frosty cold chelada with Modelo Especial and lots of salt and lime is perfect on a lazy Sunday afternoon spent soaking up the sunshine.

The only reason this place gets three stars are for the following: 1. Convenience 2. Lot's of tvs w/the big games on 3. Convenience There's nothing about any Doc's location that ever wows me. The food is sub par, eh, it's bar food. I've had terrible service, granted most of the time it's on busy nights, but how hard is it to check up on your tables once every half hour? I've also experienced warm and flat beer. Bleh.

Spent a few hours here on a recent bachelor party trip to Austin. It's your basic large indoor/outdoor type bar with an emphasis on HD TVs inside and big patio tables outside. The had a nice selection of beer and specialty type drinks -- the bloody mary was quite good the michelada was solid as well. Food was fine, mostly of the fried variety. I'd recommend this place as a comfortable spot to kill a few hours in the afternoon with a big group of friends. There's a nice shuffleboard table, too, but it's probably the slickest one I've ever played on, so bring your lightest touch if you intend to play.

Doc's get extra stars for their attentive waitstaff who literally made my drinks magically appear at the table (even the husband didn't see how my drink could have made it to the table without our knowledge). Doc's also gets a plus star for showing all the NFL games on different televisions to please all the sports fans. I have been to Doc's once before but did not review it because the experience was not memorable. Okay, the food was not memorable, but I clearly remember the place was packed full of people and the food was not excellent enough to warrant hordes of people. On my second visit, I must say I was impressed with their wings. The boneless wings were so tender, if they had bones the meat would be falling off the bones. The sauce had a barbecue-meets-spicy-hot-sauce flavor that was so unique and delicious. All other food there has just been forgettable.

I'm just really over this place. It's cute enough, with all the colorful chairs and funky decor, but for South Congress it's a little too manufactured. And not being much into sports, I kind of want to shoot myself every time I'm there with all the blaring tv's and screaming fans. Their food is just okay, and most of it is really unhealthy. Parking is also pretty hard to find.

Great service... Great atmosphere... Ordered the Queso and I was told it would blow my socks off and it was a let down... However my server was fantastic and outside patio is perfect for South Congress. If you are a dog lover you will love Doc's as they are dog friendly. I have had several items on the menu and I will say its typical bar food...but with all the specials they throw out at you know it keeps you coming back...I give this place 4 stars...

Let's start with what makes this place great. Outdoor seating, dog friendly, damn good fries and quick service. Our server was courteous and not over attentive, in a good way. I gave only three stars because, well, its just not spectacular. The burgers are meh, the chicken sandwich is meh. The only reason I would return to Docs would be out of convenience. There are much more interesting and cheaper watering holes with better food. Not the top of my list but definitely not the bottom.

This is the perfect time of year to check out Doc's. Hang out on their ample, comfortable patio and soak in the gorgeous weather while you people-watch to your heart's content. I got the taco salad, which was probably a 3 to 3-1/2 star meal, but my friend got the tilapia salad which was excellent - and the wonderful atmosphere and good service made this a 4-star experience overall. This is just a great place to kick back and remind yourself why you love living in Austin.

I like the place. It's a nice, casual place to have a few beers. It does feel a bit franchisey (I don't know whether it is or not), but it's laid back enough for S Congress. You must get there early for happy hour to get an outside table during the week. Go right after 5pm and you'll be fine. The inside seating is okay, if you don't mind barstools. The bar food is okay. If you like spicey, try the fried stuffed jalapenos. If you like sour, try the fried pickles. The queso dip is the best appetizer on the menu, hands down. Do not try the salsa, it is VERY sweet. I've been there quite a few times with different folks and nobody seems to like it. Sort of weird they can't get the salsa right. Don't put sugar in the salsa, it will taste fine. Now to the adult bevies...Different beer specials every day. The specials are pretty good. I do like that the specials are on the website. docsaustin.com Makes planning a happy hour after work a lot easier on the party planner. Overall...if you want to watch a game outside or inside with a crowd, have some ok bar food, and drink a few beers...it's a good place to be. If you want to be all zen like...go do some yoga! ;-)

Doc's is a decent place in a great neighborhood with a cool vibe to it. I have eaten here, drank here and played a show here. I had a decent time overall and it was a pretty good experience. Doc's is located in the groovy SoCo neighborhood and it has a cool vibe all it's own. It has a generous patio, a decent amount of indoor seating and a large bar. The food here was alright, nothing too amazing, but not too bad at all. The drinks are good, they have a large selection and the staff is nice and professional. My only complaint with the place is that when it is HOT out it can get REALLY hot in here. Depressingly hot. Overall though this is a good place to take some friends, hang out, grab a bite, a cold beer and watch the people walk by on Congress.

Beer wasn't cold enough for us either There are big tables here for groups of 10 and just sitting at the table demands wait service. She held our cc until we were done even tho we were just sharing a pitcher (at a different price than bathroom flyer) Hubby comments that the TV works. Nothing like grabbing a cold beer after a long afternoon of walking & shopping on Congress. Docs Motorworks has the best spot in the "SOCO" area to enjoy the warm Austin sunshine and do some serious people watching. You can't mistake or avoid the allure of their multi-colored patio chairs and tables! This almost works well as a sports bar too, but the inside part of Docs just isn't up to par with their true attraction, which is their patio. They have lots of hi-def TVs, most of which are perfectly placed, and there's even a table shuffle board (always awesome when drinking!). The food here used to be pretty good, but recently has degraded in quality. Try to stick to the appetizers such as nachos or burger sliders, they're nowhere near the best in town... but great after a few beers. Speaking of beers, they have a fairly decent selection on draft & bottles as well as a full bar. The service here can be touch 'n go most of the time, especially during big games such as NFL Sunday or if the Longhorns are playing in a big game. Make sure to check out their daily food specials and try one of their refreshing Micheladas! My favorite is the "Del Norte" (Dos XX, lime juice & salt), it's a great way to cool you off on warm Sunday afternoons.

Good food. Fantastic location. Great beer selection. Alright margaritas. Odd specialty drink selections. Great for crowds. But they need to have more staff or management on the floor because the servers are constantly swamped. This is a great place to enjoy a sunny afternoon or a warm evening drinking with a few or a group of friends. They have a lot of varieties of seating sections as well as TVs for sports, etc. Parking is a pain but they sometime have sometimes out front that are easy to get in and out of. Monday 'thru Friday you will find a good deal on either beer or food.

Doc's is great if you want some greasy, fattening comfort food...or as I like to call it hangover food. This place has a great atmosphere and a very 'Austin' type vibe. I usually take friends from out of town here for lunch and people watch (I mean it is on South Congress in Austin so it's perfect). Another great thing about Doc's is being able to watch every football game here on Sundays because they have every game on you can think of (they actually label the TV's so you can sit next to the one that has your team playing). I have a group of friends who go to Doc's on South Congress every Sunday during football season and literally stay from open to close and watch football and keep up with their fantasy teams (I have seen them go through four different servers in one day). All in all, I love Doc's. It's our local watering hole.

I wanted to give it 3.5 stars, but I'm going to settle on 4 due to the excellent waitress we had who just went out of her way to accommodate us. My friends & I do a semi-regular Sunday brunch thing &, after our usual location pissed us off awhile back, we've been trying new places & recently stumbled upon Doc's. First off... Sundays around 11:30 this place is not crowded at all, unlike the rest of the restaurants in town. We sat down immediately & our waitress was right there to take our drink orders. As more people showed up & we realized we might need a bigger table, she was perfectly willing to let us move across the patio to one of the bigger tables & even helped us carry all of our crap over. The food is pretty damn good & we were pleased to learn that they could accommodate our friends with special dietary needs with no problems at all (wheat/gluten free). The atmosphere was nice. The usual crowd that seemed to gather after about an hour wasn't quite our kinda people (sports bar crowd... go figure, right?), but it didn't detract at all from our fun. Half the patio allows smoking, the other half does not. This allowed us to sit in the non-smoking patio section to enjoy the day & those of us who smoked could steal away to a vacant table in the smoking area from time to time without bothering anyone or having to completely leave the restaurant. The drinks were just ok. I had a Mexican Martini... good, but not like Trudy's. And unfortunately I learned that I get headaches from whatever combination of liquor it is that they're using at Doc's. A couple friends ordered Mimosas. Now this was funny.... they bring you a wine glass 1/2 full of orange juice & a little red can *with a straw attached to it* (ala Capri Sun pouch). The can is "sparkling white wine". You pour this into your OJ to make your own Mimosa. No one really liked those much. I say, if your gonna drink here, stick to beer. They have plenty & it's always a safe bet. And unless you like the big crowds... go early... you'll have the whole place to yourself!

Doc's is owned and operated by Charles Milican, who has managed a number of Austin restaurants (both Iron Cactus locations, Carlos and Charlies) with great success. Doc's is his own place, and it seems all the lessons he's learned through his managing experience have been incorporated in to Doc's. Doc's is in an old mechanic's shop that has been converted in to a charming and relaxed place to grab some food, drink a beer, and watch a game or hang out. They have old school video games (Pac Man anyone?) and shuffle board to compliment the half dozen flat screen televisions. The food is good, containing mostly burgers, sandwiches, salads, and platters (chicken fried steak, tilapia) and a couple of steaks. You can probably get in/out of Doc's well fed for under $10 not including alcohol. Doc's also has daily food specials ($1 tacos on Wed, for example) and Happy Hour ($4 pitchers of Lone Star on Wed as well).

Doc's is a decent place to watch a game, but I can't think of a whole lot of reasons to go there otherwise. The menu is alright for a sports bar, and the BBQ burger and Frito Pie is worth a try at least. I would also say that their fries are pretty good but nothing too special. But honestly, if they did not have the Sunday ticket, and their excellent location, I can't see many more reasons to show up.

Always a positive in my book. You can get as rowdy as need be come game time for your favorite school or city...trust me my friends are crazy and we have yet to get the boot.

I sometimes hear people complain about their food, but I've never had a meal there I didn't like. Of course, I usually only order food there after about 5 beers, so my judgement could have been a bit on the "easy to please" side!!!

I went here this past Friday with a group of friends so I could find some new places to post onto my Happy Hour list. Well I don't think I will be posting them. The prices were pretty good, I had $2.50 Lonestars, but that is their regular price so I didn't get a deal on that... My friend's had the Shiner's and they were knowcked down a dollar I believe. There wasn't a special on Friday's for bar food, which sucked cause it was not cheap. We had two of their platters to share, there was six of us. The food was pretty good bar food and there was enough on there to get some food in us but other than that it wasn't awesome. I may go back some day to watch a UT Football game or something of that sort.

This was the very first place I stopped at once moving to Austin, and its lit up sign and herds of people on that humid summer night set the tone for my Austin experience. It was a Sunday about 8pm and I had just landed, not knowing a soul I decided to stroll down Congress and see that infamous Capital building view. While heading north I saw this funky old building to my right, that resembled a mechanics shed lined with tables and TV's. I continued to go take a quick look at the capital building and after a short stint at being lost (damn loops and frontage roads in TX..lol) I got back on Congress looking for that odd little place I saw earlier. I pulled in, parked, and sat down not realizing I probably looked like a lost child sitting all by myself. I ordered up a quick margarita and savored the taste of the tequila as I people watched for a bit. I really liked the location of Docs because it was so well lit and alive on a Sunday that it made me feel hopefully about my recent journey and life-to-be here in Austin.

I was here twice in the past two weeks: once for lunch on the patio and once for drinks with friends around 9-10PM on a thursday night. The lunch was pretty good, and you can't complain with the scenery being right on south congress if you're sitting outside. I had the blackened fish tacos ($10), and they were pretty good. You get 3 medium sized tacos, rice, and beans on a pretty large plate. I had the fish tacos at Opal Devine's farther north on congress and enjoyed them more there, but pretty much tasted about the same. Apparently, the chicken stuffed avocado is a favorite of the regulars, and I'll have to try that the next time. The late happy hour was packed with all of the social sports league team members who get drink specials after the game if they go to Docs, and I just met up with some people from one of the teams. Some tables are more rowdy than others, but it's pretty standard sports bar atmosphere with all of us young professionals crowding up the place after games.

Good service, reasonable prices, and real Austin style. Overall, it's definitely got its own crowd, but it's a nice change from the 4th - 6th street crowd, and good people watching.

This Docs is 2nd fav. to the Brodie location, not as much seating IMO and only one shuffleboard table and no outside washers or bags. It is however a better place if you want to go on a nice day and sit outside and people watch. Located in an awesome location. For some reason the service is not a good here as the other one, but over all a great place to get a drink and watch a game.

I gotta say, Doc's has appeal. The next time a beautiful, sunny, temperate Sunday afternoon rolls around, head to Doc's around 2 or 3 for a beer and a bite. The moderately priced menu is composed mainly of American staples - burgers, fries, wings and rings. Add to that a few salads and some Tex-Mexy platters. Nothing phenomenal, but boy oh boy a veggie burger and fries tastes good when the brew is cold and the sun is beating on your back. Arguably one of the best people-watching spots in Austin, with a bustling, temperature-controlled patio that sits, quite literally, in the heart of the SoCo community. Just what the Doc'ster ordered.

Doc's is absolutely great if all you want to do is sit around and hang out on South Congress Ave. The patio takes up the front HALF of the bar, so sitting outside and enjoying the Texas nights really does set you up for a great experience. if you really need to see a game you can position yourself in view of one of many TVs, and if shuffle board is your thing, they have a nice table inside. If everything was as good as the scenery and location, I would live here. My problem with the place, the reason I couldn't give it 5 stars (even the men's room urinals make taking care business funny- maybe i should give this place 3 stars), is everything else. The food is horrible. Actually I try not to eat there which is sad because they have great lunch deals and I work across the street. The beer is beer, but the selection is small. You're a Motorworks- give me a beer selection that matches the variety of people i'll see on South Cong while people watching from your patio. Sorry Doc, but you're more like one of those across-the-border doctors... promise me sweet happiness with your looks and deals, but once you get there you are filled with low quality sugar pills.

People, people, people.... This is the reality of a pub... Good wall of beer, and pretty descent food. Don't make it more than it is. I am a wanderer and can tell you that, based on the places that I have lived... the selection here is grand, and the pub food is better than most. You want to have good music, a great patio to people watch, and grub to take the edge off to make it home.. This is the place. I have taken many visiting folks here, and they all love it. I think the best thing about Doc's is that the servers are great, and usually don't look for turn over.

I'm going to say 2. I'm not saying this place is horrible, but "Meh, I've experienced better," is appropriate. I've been here several times. The service is usually fine, nothing over the top. Last time I went I was drenched in sweat sitting inside, away from the doors! I'm not sure if they had the A.C. off or what, but it wasn't THAT crowded, so I couldn't understand why it was so hot! The time before that the whole bathroom hallway and area around there pungently stunk like that sludge that builds up on the floor and crevices in commercial kitchens (if you've been a server/cook). It didn't smell so bad last time though. Overall, they have cheap beer and it's alright, but nothing to get excited about.

I LOVE this place. Nothing cooler. It's totally Austin. Great beer selection, and IMO, great food though it's a little on the pricey side. They've got good burgers, good tex-mex dishes and even two healthy selections (grilled chicked plate and grilled/blackened tilapia plate). While I agree with most that the food is a little pricey for what it is, the atmosphere of Doc's totally makes the prices wothwhile, IMO. I suppose I am of the Austinite variety that enjoys laid back places, but where people still care somewhat about how they look. Doc's is the perfect mixture of these things for me. Now don't misinterpret that as being superficial, because I'm not. But people should care about their appearance to a certain extent, and that's one of the reasons I enjoy Doc's. As other's have mentioned, they have a GREAT beer selection, and you can't beat $2 Texas Tuesdays. Any Texas beer is just $2! And for someone like myself who loves Fireman's #4, which is usually a premium beer most places, it's heaven on earth. The scenery is fantastic for both guys and girls. Awesomely huge open air patio. SoCo vibe. Great place to see and be seen. My only regrets are that they don't have more plasmas for sports viewing if you're sitting outside, and that parking can be a pain in the ass. I suppose I do have one more regret -- that I don't live closer and can walk there! I can honestly say that I think Doc's on SoCo is one of, if not my favorite eateries/bars in Austin. They have another location down south off Brodie, but I haven't checked it out yet. Doubt the atmosphere will be as cool, but then again, South Austin attitude is where it's at, so who knows. Kudos to the owners and folks that work there, wish I had thought of it! Oh, some people have mentioned that the service is a little slow, and it is, but Doc's is not a place you go to grab a quick bite to eat. It's a very social place where you go to take your time, have a few drinks and enjoy some good food and company.

Even though this isn't a Mexian place, I really liked the queso as an app. For my main dish I got the buffalo chicken sandwich w/ blue cheese crumbles. It got a little squishy b'c of the breading around the fried chicken being coated in the sauce. So I wouldn't get that again, but I'd go back. The most impressive thing is that we caught dinner there on the Saturday of SXSW so very packed. But the food came out super fast!

A continuation of our Austin Burger Quest.....started by last year's Texas Monthly Texas Monthly's Texas Top 50 Burgers and fueled by the 104.9 Burger Bracket...and our love of burgers.... Burger Category: Gourmet Wethinks: Meh! The burger (as well as all the food I have had at Doc's) is mediocre to below average. But, the porch and the people watching on So Congress and the beer and the TVs eke up the rating to 3 stars. Conclusion: 2 Star burger. 4 star porch and atmosphere.

Getting inside is a little awkward, as you have to scoot through the maze of outside tables that are occupied by other customers (and I'm sure my ass in their face is awkward, too). Once inside, though, the waitresses make sure you've been waited on. My boyfriend and I went for dinner; we ordered fried mushrooms (yummay!), he had the chicken fried steak, and I had the veggies and pesto burger. It was all pretty tasty. His side of veggies were a bit overcooked and had a greasy film to them, though. The setting is really laid back, which was expected. Different sports are on the various flat-screens, so it keeps sports fans happy. We did have to request utensils after our meals had been served. Our waitress was nice enough, though, and brought our food and utensils with a smile.

STAY AWAY FROM THE "FLYING LONGHORN" AT ALL COSTS. Yeah, yeah, the food was fine, the beers were good, the service was mediocre (our waitress was friendly but always seemed to be running her game on some seedy-looking character in the corner whenever we needed anything) and we got to catch the game on big TVs. But that Flying Longhorn is THE nastiest drink I have ever consumed (it topped even the ill-fated "Jagerwine" of my college days - a.k.a. Jarritos lime soda and Jagermeister). The menu described it as "UV Orange Vodka with Red Bull and a little sumptin' sumptin'." Ok, I don't know what kind of sumptin' sumptin' produces a beverage that is so very burnt orange and tastes so very rancid, and at this point, I don't think I really want to know. What I DO know is that I seriously challenged every other member of my party to endless rounds of rock, paper, scissors - and the loser's punishment was to take a sip of the dread 'Horn. I only ordered it because it was a "Saturday Football Special" and theoretically a dollar off. Apparently this deal, and all other "Saturday Football" deals plastered all over the bar walls, apply only to Saturdays when *UT* football games are on. Note: This was not mentioned until the check came. Tricky, tricky Doc's. If you weren't such a cool Austin institution, believe me, I would have one-starred your ass in a SECOND for (1) serving me the flying nectar of death in the first place, and then (2) having the audacity to charge me **$7.50** for it! You should have paid ME! Stick with the fish tacos, the beer, and all mixed drinks involving the secret ingredient "alternative fuel." Stay away from any drinkable form of Longhorn, especially that of the flying variety. I warned you.

Caught some bfast the morning after NYE and had a great time, food was nice and hot, the waiter guy was prompt and cool. I had the south austin scramble which comes with bean and tortillas. oh yeah a plus is that you get 3 tortillas not the standard 2 which is never enough. So good basic food, great service and good drinks. Not everything has to be out of the food network geez!

Super busy yet smiling and helpful bartenders. Specials almost every day. Tai wings were really good, and the beer is ice cold. TV's everywhere so it is a great place to catch a game. The fries are real fresh cut potatos...if you want frozen good fries go to Mcdonalds.

I liked this place, but something didn't quite click with me. Perhaps because I wasn't in a beer-drinking mood. Normally, I am, by all means. But I just nearly passed out with heat exhaustion from being at the Pecan Festival, and all I wanted was ice water and a veggie burger. Their beer selection, however, was gratuitously wonderful. The TV's, though, seemed a bit off-kilter and a bit blurry for high-def TV's. The environment was quite square, not totally comfortable to watching the games. I liked how the place opened up to the outdoor patio. The waitresses were cute and attractive, reminding me of Hooter's, except less blatant. Our waitress, Amanda, was especially beautiful. I make it a point to not bother hitting on waitresses/hostesses, because who wants to be bothered at work? However, I made an exception with her.

Location - Awesome Food - Meh, it's improving...slowly. Service - Pretty awful I've been going to Doc's for a while (since I was introduced to it by ASSC) and I can count on one hand how many times I've had good service. Most recently I sat down with 5 other people inside and waited 10 minutes for a waitress to come by. It wasn't busy at all but the service still moved slower than molasses. The food is always OK. I've never had anything there that I would rave about or recommend to friends. If it wasn't for the location and ASSC I think this place would have tanked long ago.

What a great place to catch a game, enjoy the weather and a few brews and some good food. This outdoor "ice house" had plenty of comfortable outdoor seating and TVs with helpful and attractive wait staff. My blue chees burger with peppercorn sauce was tasty and the $3 Dos Equis pint (special on Friday) was just what the Doc ordered after a previous night of mixing drinks. This 5 year old establishment is just hitting its stride and is a great place to spend a saturday afternoon watching games or cooling your heels from the strolls along SOCO visiting the various retail shops and establishments.

I only had a margarita, but is was YUMMY!!! I desperately wanted a burger as a couple people ordered them and they looked delicious, but we had just come from the Alamo and I gorged myself on the goodness there. I definitely will go back to taste the burgers for myself.

The burgers are always great. Cheese fries are the bomb. The camaraderie and atmosphere during game time are the sole reasons I venture to this place. It's a great place to go after playing a flag football game and to relax with some awesome friends. Their patio is great and especially when you want to people watch on SoCo. Their waitresses are really nice, but very busy. So treat them kindly and they will do the same.

It's friday and the weekend starts with a happy hour, so tonight, with da dwntwn obama traffic, I start at Doc's. The patio makes this place an ideal late afternoon spot. Doc's earns it's stars offering reasonable beer prices and by encouraging a diverse crowd. I saw barfly's, buisness folk, students, soco kids... As previously stated beer prices are reasonable, however happy hour prices are excellent. Happy hour is Monday-friday 4-7pm includes $7 domestic pitchers, $3.5 wells, $2 selected pints. Weekly special of interest (there are others), Tuesday $2 Texas pints. I can't remark about the food, but don't come expecting the moon. I've been a patron for several years and can't justify the fifth star based on service. The staff is nice enough, the service is simply a little slow. I'd like to state, I don't think it the staff's fault but rather it must be a process issue. Perhaps they are short staffed in servers... Note: to my fellow lonestar lover's out there ($2 tall boys of lone star)

Please, could we be any more. . . generic? While beer is good in general, and South Congress is definitely lacking in the bar scene, crappy sports bars are lame all around. I mean, I know they have their place, I just wish it wasn't in my general vicinity. The menu is golden. . . meaning just about everything is fried. It's a shame, because the patio would be great if it wasn't for the bad food, lame-ass crowd, tvs, and most of all the wait staff's horrible shirts ripped from the High Life label (SoCo Life? How awful). I suspect Doc's is fielding some of the clientele that usually frequent Hooters down the street. Could it BE any more fratty?

I've picked up to-go food from here a number of times and never been disappointed. Today, my mother and I stopped by for a quick burger, on our way to the airport. We sat on the patio and has excellent service. Our burgers were great and I was pleasantly surprised by the onion rings -- the best I've had in Austin (though I'm not a big onion ring person). The patio is very relaxing. There are ceiling fans and misters set up too, so even on a hot day, it probably isn't all that miserable. The parking is what you'd expect on SoCo. Hit or miss, really. But for a late lunch on a weekday, there were no problems.

One of my favorite places to just sit, relax, enjoy a beer, and watch the world go by. Food is good, burgers are great. They've done a bit of remodeling to add space that is weather proof but I prefer to sit outside.

Doc's is good for large work happy hours. Their food is solid also. The lone star chicken sandwich and the chili cheese fries are good. Nice place to meet friends for drinks and appetizers or dinner or to get a group together.

I understand that misting machines are a necessity, given the heat, but I can't help and picture those fat kids you see at amusement parks that have been standing in front of those misters for at least 15 minutes and are completely soaked and are always wearing white shirts and you feel weird cause this ten year old kid has bigger breasts than you do. So, misting machines aside, Doc's is a completely harmless and pretty OK place. It does have a really spacious patio area that is just far back enough off of Congress to make you think less fumes, and more fresh air. I do like their interior bar area, with long communal tables. But something abou the service made me feel rushed and unwanted, maybe I was, I hadn't showered that day, but you know... They have a decent beer selection, and the prices are pretty reasonable, beer-wise. Don't get their Margaritas: totally sour and weak, like that kid you picked on in the 3rd grade. The food is typical barfare with one amazing and artery-clogging exception, Frito Pie. Maybe I'm behind the times on this one, but these things are amazing! fritos + chili+ cheese+ onions+ sour cream + lots of guilt = wonderful experience that makes you consider bulimia. Though I view Frito Pie as a white trash wonderland, I have been informed that they are quite popular among the young Mexican descended children of New Mexico, and therefore not as white trash. 3.5 stars, thanks to the Frito Pie, my new lover. Just as an aside: Does anyone else remember those Frito commercials with the geeky girl that gets some jalapeno fritos from some soul sisters then spins around and is suddenly wearing a purple sequins outfit and singing about how "nothing has the hots like fritos, jalapeno too"?

Ok, so....yeah, the patio is bad ass, as has already been established. If you like to smoke, enjoy the outdoors, or watch people walk down Congress, then it's a really cool place to hang out and drink beer. But JUST BEER. For a "bar", they really can't make anything that has more than two ingredients. And their food is actually really gross. The last time I was here was when the Mavs were in the finals...and I only went because a friend of mine was a waitress there, so I got shit for free. So basically....I got free shit, so it's not a TERRIBLE place.....but my friend has quit, so I'm not going back unless someone can hook me up with something. BONUS: One of their bartenders looks like Jared Leto. My So-Called Life fans? Huh? Huh?

Best bar food hands down! Oooh, their cheese fries have set a new standard in the city. I'm embarrassed to admit that I can eat half a plate all by myself. Order them once and you'll see how monstrous the serving size is and why I'm embarrassed to admit it. Hot wings have just the right amount of kick and the South Congress egg rolls are outstanding too. Most of all I love the chill vibe of sitting on the patio leaning back and kicking it with friends. Great to watch games here too.

Honestly? I'm somewhat torn on Doc's. The expansive patio makes for grand chill time on sunny days and cool nights, and when we hit these guys up with a gaggle of yelpers, pulling together a corner to hang out was a pretty comfy proposition. That said, I'm more than a little surprised that someone around here asked them to make a mixed drink, less surprised that they did not do so effectively, and have been non-plussed by the level of the service I usually get. Best experienced when you're not in a hurry, and can take your time getting there.

Doc's has not let me down yet. Service is OK - think of this place as a large bar with a big patio rather than a restaurant and your expectations will be about right. I have stuck to the menu items marked as Doc's specialties and have not been let down by the food - in fact it has been pretty tasty - the tort burger especially and the eggrolls. Check out the specials when you head to Doc's - if you get there early enough, there are some pretty good ones available. There are lots of TVs to watch the games on and plenty of room to keep the place from feeling crowded. Good place to head to and sit for a bit and enjoy some good food and a drink.

Now THAT's what I'm talkin' about. The other day I posted a somewhat tepid review of Hopdoddy's, the new beer-and-a-burger joint on South Congress. I was really looking forward to its opening, and the place is okay, just nothing special and a tad too expensive for what it is. So in the interest of back-to-back comparison, I went to Doc's Motorworks the other night. I hadn't been to Doc's in a good while, which is rather inexcusable considering how close it is to my home. I ordered a Modelo ($2 daily special) and a blue cheese and peppercorn sauce hamburger, very rare. Unlike Hopdoddy's, where my request for very rare came back kinda medium, my Doc's burger was seared on the outside and delightfully pink and soft and lukewarm and moist inside. It held together well. And the fries were crisply al dente outside and soft and flavorful inside, unlike the very disappointing stubby mushy fries I got at Hopdoddy's. In lieu of the $6 milkshake I had at Hopdoddy's, (which I did enjoy quite a lot), I ordered two more beers and watched the ballgame on a high-def screen practically in my face. The bill for burger, fries, three beers, with tax and tip, was still less than I paid at Hopdoddy's for one beer, a burger, fries and a shake. And it was a better burger and better fries. Too soon to give up on Hopdoddy's, which does offer interesting beers and those yummy shakes, and for some folks perhaps it's just what they're looking for in an upscale burger joint. But after back-to-back comparisons, seems to me I'll get a better burger and better fries for less money at Doc's.

Holy Crap! This has to be the loudest bar I've ever been to. OK sure, it *was* First Thursday jam-packed and everything. But damn... I could barely hear the people talking right at me. So yeah.. it's a bar. They've also got food and stuff. To me it seems a bit pricey for bar food, but I guess they're trying to hit that So-Co target market. The hot wings I tried were suprisingly good. No Pinball here, but they do at least have a combo Centipede/Lets-Go-Bowling video game. :)
