Went there for lunch after a day in the Smoky Mountains with another couple. They're locals but had never been here. Picked it on a whim (I felt like having trout) and read some reviews before going in. The place deserves its high marks. We started with sweet potato fries. I love sweet potato fries and wasn't disappointed in these. Then on to the entree. I wanted both the pan seared and the fried trout, but ended up with the fried, along with corn and green beans. The trout was perfectly seasoned and almost perfectly cooked. It's a half pound of fish, too, so there's a lot to enjoy. The vegetables were surprisingly good - and the portions were huge for sides. Large portions seemed to be the rule. The kids meal our friend ordered was enough for any adult. My wife and our other friend ordered burgers. Neither finished theirs, but both said those were great burgers. They looked good. When we were there only two other tables were occupied, a 2 top and a 10 top. Service was fast and very friendly (thanks Ashley). Everything is clean (almost too clean, it spoils the rustic look they're going for), and the wait staff wear fairly traditional uniforms, which is all too rare now. I really liked this place and would happily go back the next time I'm visiting our friends in Knoxville.

Overall, good meal and wonderful service. Our waitress asked if everything was ok with the iced tea when she noticed I had not drank much of it. Tea was fine, had just finished a beer so I wasn't too thirsty. Shows attentive service that she asked. Note for out of towners (like us). They do not serve wine, only beer. If you would like wine with dinner, go up the road a few miles to Cades Cove Cellars to taste a few and buy a bottle for dinner. Trailhead will serve to you with dinner for a cork fee. Wish we had known this beforehand!

Was planning to go to another restaurant recommended on Yelp while in the area, but we were running late, and it was going to close in fifteen minutes. So we asked the shopkeeper at the outfitter store next door where she recommended for great local burgers, and without pausing, she recommended the Trailhead in Townsend. Since it opened at 3:00 pm, we had time to kill, and walked to the Chocolate Bar next door. We got back at three, got a table and ordered a blue cheese burger and a regular cheese burger. We received home made bread followed by one of the best burgers we've had, along with some awesome fries. Prices for the burgers were reasonable, no complaints. Their other entrées were more, but if the quality matched the burgers, it would be worth it. Food was great, beer was cold, and the atmosphere was pleasant and classy. Oh, and great service too!

Great food, great service ... And they didn't even complain that we'd just gotten off the river from tubing! Best country fried steak I've ever had, and the trout was delicious (I had lightly breaded in cornmeal). Service was prompt and friendly, and prices were fair. This isn't a life changing kind of restaurant, but this place is simple, clean, affords, sincere and delicious.

The dining options in this area are extremely limited, particularly after dark when you've spent the entire day hiking and biking Cades Cove and really want a good meal. I had a nice trout dinner with baked potato. It was better than I could have hoped. I recommend the blacked trout dinner. Also, even though I think this is a dry county, they do somehow serve a couple different beers here, including fat tire.

Foodie snob here. Phenomenal steak (be sure to go all out and get the onions and blue cheese crumbles). Also, fantastic service. I've eaten here two nights in a row. The fried catfish is good, but I wouldn't get it again over their steak. Salad was fresh both nights too!

A locals favorite. Delicious steaks and trout - I've had them both! Very clean and friendly staff. I haven't tried the Trailhead burger but may the next time .....it has mash potatoes on it!!

This place is hilarious. They constantly have an hour wait and once you find your vaunted table you realize they have twice the number of servers needed and half the number of tables that could fit in the space. You basically have two choices for dinner: steak and trout (the name is quite accurate). These both seem to be fine and if all they served was steak and trout, this review might be higher. It's the sides that destroy. Want a salad that consists of a ice berg lettuce, shredded carrot, and a dehydrated tomato? This is your spot! Want a side of sweet corn or northern beans that came from the canned vegetable section of the IGA down the street? This is your place! Even their honey butter comes pre-packaged. Just avoid this place (the lines will keep you out anyway).

Food's not bad, but very greasy and salty. Padding to finish review. Padding, padding, padding, padding, padding.

We ate there twice, trying different entrees. My husband's rib-eye was cooked to order, but more gristle than expected. His fried catfish were very well prepared & not at all greasy. My grilled salmon was hard, dry, overcooked, but seasoned lovely with lemon pepper. My grilled trout was okay. The only vegetables there without meat are corn & white beans, which were good. Their salads are highly lacking....I had the house & had the "supposed" Caesar salad. Service very good. It;s clean & comfortable inside. When we left, we saw a tip jar for the chef by the door, which we thought was strange. But if you love red meat, fried foods, fatty sides in a clean & pleasant environment, this is a great choice. We were thrilled with Firefly Cafe!

I loved this reasurant! The service was amazing and our server was very welcoming. Since having a gluten, sugar, dairy intolerance it was hard finding sweet potato fries. But not anymore, they have fresh cut fries every day and then put into the fryer to become crispy as ever! I started with this for my appetizer. For my entree I got the 8oz Flame-Grilled salmon with lemon pepper, and the two sides I got with it was green beans and a small salad. OMG! The salmon was cooked perfectly, once it hit my tongue it literally fell apart in my mouth. I was in heaven. Over all this was the best steak house I've ever been to.

Fantastic service and food. My wife and I were staying at the best western across street and figured we would give this place a try since we were in the mood for steak. The people at the best western suggested it and I figured it was just because it was across the street in easy walking distance. Looks like they suggested it because it is amazing. They have a decent size menu with good choices. It was very difficult deciding what we wanted. In the end we were very satisfied. I got steak which was very good. and they do not lie with their fry's being called very best fry's. They truly were. the salad was also very fresh and tasty. If I'm in the area again I will definitely be going back here.

My wife and I both had a sirloin steak with a perfectly baked potato. The steaks were cooked to our requests, and my green beans were just the right taste. My wife had a cup of cheddar broccoli soup that was delicious. We topped off our meal with a piece of chocolate truffle cake that was the right blend of decadence and sweet.

Went here after the Thanksgiving holidays for dinner. Considering that most of the restaurants in the area close this time of year, we were happy to find this place open. If you opt for the fried green tomato's for an appetizer, be aware that it is huge. Four people could easily share this. They were very good as was the meal. My wife got the grilled trout, and I got the fried catfish. The service was excellent and friendly. We will be back on our next visit to the area.

We have been going to Townsend for years and have never stopped here before. That was a mistake! We decided to stop at 7 pm for dinner and had to wait for 1-1/2 hours for dinner, but boy was it worth it!! The staff (especially our waitress Brianna) were very nice and helpful in our choices. I had the ribeye with salad and a baked potato. My husband had the blackened rainbow trout with a salad and fries. We figured we could share and have surf and turf. The salads were good (I especially liked the raspberry vinaigrette). The trout was perfectly cooked and seasoned. It was flavorful and moist. The steak was also excellent! It was tender and very flavorful. The baked potato was good but the beer battered French fries were delicious. My husband was full but he couldn't stop eating them. He said they were the best French fries he had ever had, and that is saying a lot. We ordered dessert to go since we could hardly move from being so full and had it the next day. It was sweet but not overly sweet. It was so good. We will make this a planned stop every year when we are visiting Townsend from now on!

Relocated to TN from CT over a year ago and just discovered the Trailhead. Best steak I've had since moving to the area. Staff was friendly and attentive, atmosphere was casual and pleasant (except for the piped in music). Will go again and bring visitors, too.

We stopped in after hiking in the Smokies. We were greeted at the door cordially, and were immediately impressed by the pleasant atmosphere and our friendly reception by our server. We both ordered hamburgers. The burgers were superb and fries were the best I've ever tasted. Our iced tea was kept replenished and the server was very attentive to our every need. We will definitely be back.

Stopped here after a hike in the Smoky Mtns and were lucky to get a table. Great friendly service which made us feel at home. All but one of our party went for the grilled trout which was delicious. We were too full after our meals for dessert but took a piece of bourbon pecan pie to go and were very glad our server recommended it. Mmmmm good.

We got there right when they opened at 5:00. There was only one other family there when we got there. They recommended reservations, however, the place was fairly empty when we went. The restaurant is only open Wednesday through Sunday, 5 until ??? The restaurant is small with only about a dozen tables total. When you first entered, there is a beautiful smell of Cedar wood and there is some nice rock work showing off the cabin setting of the place. We knew the costs when we went because we viewed the menu online and also had a Groupon for the restaurant, so we were paying 1/2 price. While we were sitting, we noticed 2 separate tables sit down and then a little while later, they left. One couple was walking out as another couple coming in asked them how it was. The guy commented, "We're leaving because it's too expensive." Not sure why the other couple left, but they have menus at the front to browse through in case you didn't know how much items were. Ask for a menu at the front to look through if you aren't sure of the prices and whether you will be staying or not. The items were sold solo, with the sides as extra, so that made it a bit more expensive than other restaurants. The food was delicious! I ordered the Grilled Rainbow Trout and baked potato. My husband ordered the burger and fries. We shared a Chocolate trouffle cake, which we took 1/2 of that home due to the large size. The fries were the best I've had in a long time. They had a crust on them with seasoning that was delicious! The food didn't come out too quick and let us enjoy the warm bread and talking. The server was also the hostess and handled most of the tables. She was busy, yet handled all the tables within a reasonable amount of time. By the time we left, 1/2 the tables were filled. She was very good in keeping with everyone's drinks and timing of food coming out. There was another server that was helping her bring food and drinks. Overall I was impressed, except for the items being separate on the menu. It's in a cute little restaurant, but I am not sure I'd go back due to the expense of it.

This restaurant is one of our favorites when visiting the Smoky's. The food is cooked perfect and the servers are attentive. The decor is inviting and rustic. Thank you for the nights of food bliss!

3rd trip to the Smokies, but 1st time to this restaurant. What a find! The kitchen is in a glassed in building, where the chef's are easily viewed as you make your way in from the parking lot. They have nothing to hide. The dining room is spotlessly clean, white starched tablecloths, cool vintage photographs, homey wooden trim. Waitstaff is prompt and very attentive. Food is surprisingly great, well prepared, plates are attractively arranged. Townsend has a dozen or so restaurants on its main drag, but we so thoroughly enjoyed our meal that we decided go again the next night. Our waitress (Breanna), not only remembered us but also recalled our drink order and where we were visiting from. Don't believe old reviews from years ago, our 2 meals there were the best we had in Townsend, & we went to just about every dinner spot in town. If I didn't live almost 800 miles away, I'd be a regular there.

Overdone lobster tail, canned green beans, soggy rice, a pork chop undercooked and overpriced. The one star is for the service, otherwise an awful meal

I found this place hard to rate. The first time I was here,( September 2011) I ate with a girlfriend and the meal was not that good. Both of us felt it was not a place we would go back to. Then I ate there with my husband about 6 weeks ago and it had to be the best steak dinner we have had in a long time. We will try them again for our anniversary in May.

This place has to be one of the highlights of any visits to the Smoky Mountains. Fresh baked bread and cuts of USDA that melt in your mouth. Nothing better after a day of fishing than to be pampered with white table cloth service. I highly recommend, just don't tell your wife this is how you "rough it" on those fish'n trips. SHHHHH !!!! Keep it a secret.

And I mean MUCH better....we dined here last night, the decor is warm and rustic inside, clean with white tablecloths, we ordered ribeyes, we got very thin cut [smallish for 12 oz]....overcooked steak. Mine was approx. 1/4 inch thick or less, and tough. And we heard the diners at the next table complain to the waitress that theirs were overcooked, but "they would eat them" The service was slow and sporadic, although she was polite. We got warm french bread before our meal, then we waited, and waited [there was only one other table of diners} At last the waitress returned to say there was no mozzarella cheese to put on the Caesar salad we ordered......Mozzarella, did we hear correctly....?? She offered cheddar instead. We opted for the house salad, which was fine. Homemade blue cheese dressing was good. Then the steaks arrived......no fresh bread offered. After a few more minutes of waiting, the baked potatoes arrived.....by now the steak is getting cold. Potatoes were well cooked, and came with the toppings on the side. The iced tea was sweet and good, but quite weak. Our meal cost about $30 a person. We have had much, much better service and food at Puleo's Grille, and we wished we had gone there. Puleo's steaks are thicker, juicier, cooked to perfection and reasonably priced, and the service there is impeccable. This was too much to pay {$24.95 for a ribeye vs. about $15 at Puleo's] We have also had better steaks at Texas Roadhouse, especially at the Gatlinburg location. We travel a lot, dine out a lot, and enjoy ribeyes, but we were disappointed at this place. Tonight we are trying the Cherokee Grill in Gatlinburg.....we won't go back to the Trailhead again.

Five stars of goodness. Casual dress, $5 corkage fee if you bring your own wine/liqour, they take reservations and I reccomend them, prices reflect a quality steakhouse. After several nights camping in Cades Cove it was time for a well earned steak dinner. This is THE place in the world to get a steak. We had their special of the night, an eye of delmonico steak. They described it as it's basically the tenderloin but has a bit of fat and flavor of a delmonico. It defiantely melted in your mouth. The alfredo mashed potatoes are unique to this restaurant. Instead of blending with cream or milk they use alfredo sauce to make the mashed potatoes creamy. Out of this world! Order the gorgonzola sauce for your steak! It is served on the side and it is luxurious. The restaurant is adorable and CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN. They decorate with local artists' work and you can buy some pieces. If you admire a piece someone will explain who the artist is and how they made it! They display intricately detailed figurines carved from a single piece of wood and small acryllic paintings that are clear as photographs that are crafted with a single piece of human hair. Beautiful! Hardwood floors, paneling, white linens and SUPERB service. Next time you visit the Great Smoky Mountains this is the place to eat when you're done eating trail food. We'll be back!
