I love a good deli, where the staff chats with you while they make your sandwich. Where you get to know the regular lunch crowd. Where you can get a sandwich just the way you like it. So when I started working in Cummins Station, and heard there was a deli in the building, I got my hopes up. At first, I thought it would be alright. A little dingy, but the owner is sweet, and the food wasn't bad. Not great, but not bad. I hoped it would be a regular lunch option. But the cleanliness issues can't be overlooked. Sandwiches are made with bare hands on a single counter, with a dirty dishrag mere inches away. The owner hangs his glasses from his mouth while he preps the food, wipes the sweat from his forehead and nose, and then goes back to handling your food. Cheese that was sliced earlier in the day sits in a cooler, unwrapped, un-packaged, placed directly on the racks with food stuck on them. The cashier handles your money, then scoops chopped chicken onto your salad with her bare hands. The health department certificate says they scored a 90 on their last inspection, which tells me either A) the health department gives businesses several weeks notice, or B), I'm never eating at a restaurant that scores below a 97. I truly wish this owner the best of luck, because he is the sweetest man, but the restaurant industry is not for him.
