It really breaks my heart to give this place a bad review. Yes we all love the story and history of this place. There is lots of community pride and joy in this place. The people who work here are wonderful, super friendly, and really care. However, the problem at the end of the day comes down to this: THE FOOD IS HORRIBLE. I have tried it all - MAC and cheese, mashed potatoes, biscuits and gravy, biscuit sandwiches, and etc. trying to like this place and I can't. 1. The ingredients are low quality. Not only do they use dry goods and not exactly the freshiest meats (you can taste them), eggs, and potatoes... they really go for the worst quality and branded of all the ingredients... across the board (you can see it on their selves)... I like eating the local style and all, but this isn't local style, this is more like eating BAD. 2. I seen this butter and salt game before. They try to hide the poor taste by adding butter and salt to their food thinking that it will make it all go away (Paula Deen style). Not much inherent flavor here. 3. Ripped table cloths, decaying interior, rusty appliances, and etc.. This is beyond "having local character" to just having an extreme wore out feeling. 4. Dirty dishes, missing utensils, and sand in seafood dishes - yep experienced all. I will say that yes, you do get an amazing value for your money. It may have more "character than run of the mill Southern food"... but it tastes worse than that one time I went to my sister's military dining hall (that is unless you like ungodly amounts of butter and salt). If you want to have a more genuine southern experience go to Wholly Chow or Monell's... NOT HERE!

Ive been putting off reviewing this place because I am almost afraid of it getting too crowded! This is a hidden gem of a place where the owner is almost always present and interacts with all the customers. It's not uncommon for Big Al to ask you where you're from, what things you like to do, offering encouraging words or suggestions of what places to check out if you're just visiting. Don't be put off from the exterior, and don't be afraid to pull up a chair to share a table with people already seated and eating. Food: so amazing. Feels like you're right at home except better food (sorry mom). They also have cheerwine (love it) and amazing breakfast and lunch! I live in the neighborhood and my first visit Al sent me home with a housewarming gift!! Such a great hearted man and a friendly establishment with excellent food for less than half the price of the places down the street (germantown).

I went there a few months ago last time. i found this amazing restaurant in a magazine 'NASHVILLE' I had a huge breakfast then. i don't eat American style one much but did enjoy there. Simple crispy bacon and sunny-side-up and toast. I tried to order lunch too but I failed then because it was too early. So I came back here again for lunch today. Lunch comes with 2 sides and toasts or corn cakes. Additional side is $1.5 Roast herb chicken with skillet beans and mashed red potato and corn cakes. $7 Huge and Tasty! Chicken is super tender and tastes a little bit like jerk chicken. The bones fall apart. Skillet beans are a tiny bit spicy and AMAAAAAAZING. I've never tasted like this. MUST ORDER. Mashes red potato is very good too. The skins make it tastier. Corn cakes are simply good. Salisbury steak with coleslaw, mac&cheese, greens, and mix beans. $8+$1.5+$1.5 Salisbury steak is really moist and very flavorful. Coleslaw is a little bit heavy mayonnaise but fresh and delicious. Mac&cheese is rich but good. Greens are a little bit sour. Mix beans ... hmmm. I prefer skillet beans! The chef Big Al is funny friendly and the waitress is really nice. I like the really welcome atmosphere. I can't wait for the next visit there!!!!! Now they sell tickets at group on. Check it out;)

TL;DR - check out his food, just not the biscuits and gravy If you're driving down a random neighborhood, looking for Big Al's, and thinking that you're lost, any other instance you probably would be but this is not the case! Keep driving because you're almost there. Once you step inside, you immediately get this feeling that you're about to eat some good southern cooking. No fancy decoration. No fancy silverware. It's just big Al on his grill cookin up a storm in his little old dining room. Unfortunately, I was wrong about the food. I think... As the rest of my group ranted and raved over their hearty breakfast sandwiches, I was left trying my best to like Big Al's version of biscuits and gravy. I ordered it thinking that it would be thick and creamy with big chunks of sausage however what I got was some soupy, bland, meatless "gravy" over some slightly burnt biscuits. I also ordered a sweet tea which tasted like straight up syrup with a splash of water. I only managed a few sips before I just asked for a different drink. Maybe I caught Big Al on his off day or maybe I ordered the one thing that doesn't taste good. Hopefully, I'll get to come back to Nashville to check it out the rest of his food. Either way, entire meal only cost me 7ish bucks so no big deal.

This place is great! We went for lunch, but I wanted to try the homemade biscuits & gravy, too. Even though it was well past breakfast hours, Al whipped up a plate of them just for us. Big fluffy biscuits smothered in savory gravy with chunks of crunchy sausage. The thinly sliced fried pork chops were tender & flavored with just the right amount of heat. The raspberry chipotle baked chicken was tender, juicy & falling off the bone. Along with the heaping sides of greens, corn & smashed potatoes, we have more than enough for dinner tonight, too! Al said he has a special menu for Saturday mornings (steak & eggs, blueberry pancakes, etc.). I can't wait to go back just to try the shrimp & grits!

Sick! Everything is unreal good. I'm having an event in mid February 2016 and he's going to cater it. The shrimp and grits, skillet beans, smashed potatoes, fried catfish, hot chicken are all awesome. Must go place to eat lunch.

I've been meaning to come her for forever. However, at lunch I rarely want something super heavy. I finally made the four block trek over to Big Al's today and was quite impressed. Al immediately greeted me and my husband. My husband gets a sausage biscuit every Saturday morning so he said hi to him and introduced himself to me-- incredibly friendly. His wife (I assume) quickly took our order and our food was brought to us within 5 minutes. I had the chipotle raspberry chicken with greens and apples. The chicken was super moist and tender and had a good flavor that was not overwhelming. The greens were very flavorful. I was not huge on the apples, but I think that was just my personal taste. My husband ordered the hot chicken, and his was definitely the tastier dish between the two of our orders. His was a lot heavier but really tasty. He also loved his biscuit-- next time I'll opt for this over the corn cakes. I'm very excited to keep coming back to this place and trying some other dishes. Everything looked and smelled delicious! I'll be back soon.

What can I say...the most unassuming place, a real tripleD showcase. BigAL is quality people and cooks up a storm. Everything is great, you must have Shrimp n Grits - ridiculous, same with skillet chicken, beans, smashed potatoes.

Thank you YELPers for rating this restaurant and getting us in the door. The food is fabulous! My brother got the burger and it was wonderful. I got the Hot Fried Chicken and it was perfection - juicy and seasoned wonderfully. My folks both had the catfish and enjoyed that as well. We got a variety of sides. The green beans are prepared well done, which isn't my favorite preparation but good for what they were. The Mac & Cheese was rich and creamy and delightfully tasty. The smashed potatoes were everyone's favorite. Skins on and made with sour cream and green onions (maybe chives?). The skillet beans were spicy so stay clear if you avoid the hot stuff. Of note - this is in a residential neighborhood. I thought we had entered the wrong address into the GPS until we pulled up. Don't miss out on this little gem. I'd drive a half an hour to get here if I had to.

The Omelet was dynamite. The service was genuine. This is a no frills place, just good southern food.

Best money I've spent in a while. Even though Big Al turned down my sincere marriage proposal after I tasted the burning love chicken and smashed potatoes, I still can't wait to go back for breakfast. Thank you Yelpers for the glowing reviews that led me to Big Al's, and thank you to my friend Marcus who ordered the pork chop so I could taste it, and fall in love once again. The greens are tastily seasoned. I truly enjoyed the service (though I can't remember her name) by Al's colleague, who was warm and attentive and caring. The biscuit. No words need to be said.

Nashville from Pittsburgh- loved Big Al's! Al and patrons were really friendly and welcoming. The shrimp and grits was the best dish I had on my trip! Recommend stopping in if traveling solo or with friends. Real southern hospitality and great food. Next time - chocolate gravy :)

I took a chance and came with the guy who works for me. Liked it so much that I brought someone who works with me. So delish that I brought my boss. She liked it so much that I brought my boss's boss. I figure I should get a raise out of this. Going up the ladder, I now plan to bring my wife. Al does very special things with your basic foods. And I love the atmosphere. Makes everyone feel welcome.

Big Al's is legit southern food. The prices are good and home cooking is top notch for what it is. It's exactly what you hope for when going to a meat and three type restaurant. Today I ordered the dark hot chicken which is country fried in texture and came with a large portion of hash browns and a giant biscuit. Al is incredible friendly and engaging with his customers.

I work in Metrocenter and found myself driving around the area looking for new places for lunch. Saw Big Al's and googled it and was excited to try it after reading all the superb reviews. Big Al greeted us as we walked in and we instantly felt at home. He shook our hands and introduced himself and it felt like I was talking to an old friend. The rest of the staff was just as friendly as Al. I got the fried catfish, greens and Mac&cheese. To say it was delicious wouldn't do it justice. The perfect amount of spices and no overwhelming flavor. Al has everything perfected right down to the tartar sauce and lemonade. Will I be back? Absofreakinglutely! I would make it an everyday occasion if my waistband would allow it. Maybe I'll just hit the gym twice as hard. It's THAT good. Y'all, don't let the outside turn you away. This place is top notch. Sorry Arnold's, my allegiance now lies with Big Al.

Just had one of the most wonderful experiences in recent memory at Big Al's. We were greeted warmly by Al himself and he chatted with us periodically throughout our breakfast. If we lived in Nashville, my boyfriend and I agreed we'd be there all the time, even just to enjoy a cup of coffee and the company. I haven't even mentioned the food yet, which was amazing. Best biscuits and gravy I've ever had--different than most, with a kick from extra black pepper. My boyfriend's hash browns, prepared fresh by Al, were fried in bacon grease (?). Enough said. In short, this place was a perfect way to cap off a great visit to Nashville. We will most definitely be back!

My friends I have been converted. I thought Arnold's Country Kitchen was Nashville's end all for southern soul food. Big Al's Deli has made me see the light. This place tops any other southern food I have ever eaten, and I've had alot of it. The owners are so kind and have a real heart for what they are doing. I can't say enough good things about this place. The food is so good you will literally forget all your worries. My only caution is to know that it will be the sweetest tea you have tasted in your life.

Same great mashed potatoes and greens. But, I would skip the meatloaf. It had a lot of grain in it (which all meatloaf has some sort of filler) but it made the whole thing very "grainy" and it just crumbled into pieces. I just wasn't a fan. I would still come back to Big Al's. I would just skip the meatloaf.

In the past 2 weeks, I have been here not once, but twice. In addition to this, the 1st time myself and a coworker went, we were so impressed that we have called Al to do our Christmas Turkey and Ham, which will be picked up later on this week. Upon first pulling up, one may think 'hmm, not quite sure about this place' but please know- this is the epitome of a 'hole in the wall'- with a great health rating of 98! You are greeted by "Big Al" himself once you walk in, and he wants to know your name, if its your first time, etc. Seating is seat yourself, and don't feel shy if you notice there is a table with a few extra seats- just ask if it is okay to sit down. The menu is updated daily, with the best food you'll put in your mouth near Metro Center in my humble opinion. My coworker had heard about this place (word of mouth) from a friend of hers who works in the DA's office. Menu: Typical Meat and sides items. I have first hand tasted the Jerk Chicken, which has a bite to it, but not too overpowering. With the Jerk Chicken, which was so tender and good, I ordered a side of the 'Smashed Mashed Potato's' and 'Greens'. The Smashed Mashed Potatoes have something in them that make them creamy, good, and i know that he places freshly chopped green onions in there- but it does not make them overpowering. They are creamy, chunky, smooth and melt in your mouth. The Greens: OH MY!!!! I have been looking for greens like this FOREVER. (Literally). They have onions in them, vinegar (and if it's not enough vinegar, pour some hot pepper vinegar [located on the table] to spice them up!). I like the Greens so much that I had them the 2nd time, and no doubt, will probably always order them as a side dish. My 2nd time going there (today)- I ordered the 'Burning Love Chicken' which is marinated in Strawberry, Raspberry, Cranberry's with a chipotle flavoring...again, a small spice, but not too much. It was magnificent. In addition to all of that, you can choose from 'biscuit' or 'corncake'---go for the corncake. In my opinion, they should serve you more than one of those, because they are SOOOOOOOO delish. All food is served to you- you choose your drink (tea/sweet tea and iced coffee is brought to you; all others you get yourself from the sliding door fridge). The meals come in heaping amounts- all on different plates, and I like that they do that. The seating is very limited, so if you come in and it looks too full- get it to go. I know that it's close enough to our workplace that it wouldn't be an issue to do that. Prices are legit. You get a lot of food, for a little price. Because of this, I like to leave a good tip (as the service is always good the times I have gone) and Big Al is in the 'friend making' business!

Hidden gem! Great people working here, followed up by some outstanding food! I had catfish, greens and skillet beans. Co-worker got a burger and fries and next time, I'm gonna have to try a burger, looked amazing! Will be back!

Al greeted and introduced himself at the door. Made me feel real welcomed. 7 dollars for a heaping amount. Hot chicken with 2 sides. The greens were amazing and the Hot Chicken was perfect. not too hot and fell off the bone. I will be back. Great spot. Another hidden Nashville treasure.

Don't fret as you follow your directions and think that your maps have taken you to a neighborhood, have faith. This small deli is a great place to stop by for a delicious leisurely lunch. Take a seat at the bar or grab a table any seat in the house is great as there are only about a dozen. Big Al works the kitchen like a master and playing host he will visit while you watch him work. The food is full of flavor. My husband and I split the generous portion of fried pork chop, what a delight tender and juicy. This place is truly a diamond in the rough. Everything we saw come out of the kitchen looked amazing. We took the banana pork tenderloin sandwich to go and they are amazing. Oh my y'all amazing! We will definitely be stopping here again.

Now this is my kinda place! The food taste like good food, real home-cooked food. The herb baked chicken was a welcome and tasty respite from fried chicken. The smashed potatoes were outstanding. Yes, its out of the way but it certainly seems to have a devoted following of regulars. Al, the king of the joint, was super friendly, cooks like a champ, and really seems to be happy with what he's doing. The banter with customers is frequent, but not obtrusive. I'm looking forward to my upcoming return visits. Atta boy, Al!

YUM. All of that great food, and my car didn't even get stolen! I am not eating wheat, so I was a bit concerned when I saw the menu, but all I had to do was skip the biscuit, and say no to the fried chicken, and I was set. Usually when you see "baked ham" on a menu, you assume that means "ham was cooked, we heated it up, and maybe sliced it, but probably not." Not at Big Al's. Baked ham was a raw ham, soaked in delicious flavors (mustard and cinnamon were the most obvious flavors permeating the meat), and cooked properly. Then big chunks cut off and stuck on my plate. Beautiful flavor, and actual, real meat texture! From ham! In a restaurant! I will be late to work someday soon, because I need to get myself some breakfast food from this fool. Keep doin' what you're doing, Al!

Perhaps another rave review is useless but, good grief! Thursday's Banana Pork Chop is just ridiculous. A sweet banana marinade with a little Caribbean kick in the batter. Smashed potatoes peppered and creamy, flecked with new potato skins and green onion. The New Orleans neighborhoods of my past were full of these buried gems with generations-old fryers cooking up chicken and chops everyday. To find a place like this hidden just off the beaten path in Nashville is a welcome surprise.

First off, let me say that I have been putting off reviewing for years. I use this app almost every time I go out to eat but I have not felt the need to review a place until I stepped foot in Big Al's. I first came here for lunch on Saturday as I live right around the corner. Being a avid Hattie's B's fan, Al told me about his hot chicken recipe he started two weeks ago. The chicken was unbelievable and he threw in a biscuit that sold me on coming back for breakfast this morning before work. The restaurant itself is a perfect little hole in the wall. Very clean and Al is the nicest of guys. I would HIGHLY recommend checking it out for yourself, if you regret it then please just delete your yelp account. This place is awesome.

Honestly some of the best southern food I've ever had and I'm a connoisseur of southern food. The mashed potatoes, greens, and BBQ were stupid good and the peach sweet tea was very rare. Can't wait to come back.

On what has become an annual tradition driving with my wife and daughter from West Lafayette, IN to Savannah, GA. It is lunchtime and we are in need of a serious break. I see the outstanding reviews on Yelp and we make a quick jump off the fwy and are in a residential neighborhood where we find Big Al's. Big Al and staff greet us with smiling faces and sweet tea making us weary NoCal travelers feel like we are regulars. The food. Oh the foooood. Deep fried pork loin with banana infused spiced crust on a fresh bun with a pile of seasoned fries that run over the plate. It was so good my daughter and I refused to put the giant sized sandwich down. That was until the plate of seasoned catfish arrived. All seasoned and fried to perfection. If you get a chance come bye and see Big Al, say hi to his smiling welcoming staff, sit down to a giant tumbler of sweet tea and order whatever they recommend and enjoy! It doesn't get any better.

Big Al's Deli is the best kept secret in Nashville! A friend of mine introduced me to Big Al's a couple of months ago, and I try to go as often as possible! Big Al may be the best cook of all time! I grew up on biscuits and gravy, so I'm definitely a critic. He may have the best I've ever had in my entire life!!! Big Al is a wonderful person with a wonderful heart! He knows all of his customers, and never forgets a face! Love you Big Al!!!

I always love when the owner is actually working in his/her restaurant. Al greeted us when we walked in so I knew I was going to have a good meal. He even checked in on us after we got our food to make sure it was delicious. Fried Chicken (white), smashed potatoes, skillet beans, and a corn cake for $7. This spot is one of those places you go eat when you don't want to go back to work afterwards. I'm so full. Sadly I'm still at work. I need to go back and try their breakfast. Definitely worth the trip. I also liked it because I don't think all of Nashville knows about it yet so it's still easy to go in/out without having to wait in a line. Just go.

Hands down best biscuits and gravy I've even had. Big Al knows what his customers want, and he kicks up southern favorites like few others can do. Not only is the food A+, but the relaxed vibe will make you feel at home as you enjoy your meal. From the serve-your-own coffee, to the community tables; from the down-home cuisine, to Big Al himself, this is not the food your mom made--it's even better.

While Big Al is not that big of a man his heart sure is. If you ever find yourself in the Nashville area please visit this cultural food landmark. My friends and I happened to come across Big Al's when in town for the Giants and Titans game. We were treated to a fantastic breakfast like the kind we had as kids. Cooked to perfection and served with amazing hospitality. Definitely try the biscuits and chocolate gravy. Big Al mans the grill and is great to listen to for his stories and southern charm. AJ was fabulous as our server. He handled our enormous order flawlessly and is one of the nicest kids you will ever meet. Big Al gets ten stars. If you want a true Nashville experience skip Pancake Pantry and head over to Big Al's. You will not be disappointed.

Big Al himself is amazing and puts all his heart into his food! Super southern, soul, food place that has daily specials which are all homemade. We recently had him carter an event for us and his food was a smashing hit! Almost every person asked where the food was from & couldn't wait to go check out other items. It is very small but Big Al will pull out additional tables for you and always makes you feel welcome! He even delivered our cratering!

Had to make a second trip to find this place, but so well worth finding this gem. If there are cars parked in front, which is almost surely the case, you would never see it amongst the other neighborhood homes. Big AL welcomes you at the door like an old friend. Make yourself at home and enjoy a home cooked meal. I had the Hot Chicken cooked to perfection. So much food you can make it two meals. Told AL I'd be back for breakfast next week. A traditional meat and three with true southern hospitality.

Amazing southern breakfast - he loved that we loved his food. Shared samples of many of the amazing items from on menu. The orange marmalade jalapeño was my favorite! They raspberry chipotle marmalade was also a hit! Definitely worth a visit! And don't miss the black pepper parmesan biscuits.

I wasn't going to write a review about Big Al's because I want to enjoy being able to get in and out in a reasonable amount of time and avoid the line down the street while I still can. This is one of those places that will blow up in the short term, it's just that good. The prices are good, the portions are great and the Skillet Beans are good enough to make you recent your upbringing and anytime I go in and Al says that I just missed Food Network, again, I know that the time is short from when one of my favorite out of the way places becomes "the place". Although the selfish side of me wants to keep it as it is I know that Al has worked hard and deserves the notoriety that is surely heading his way.

    (5)
  • Brennan W.

First of all, there's nothing more exciting to me than the promise of down-home southern food from a place named after the owner. I mean really, doesn't a place called "Big Al's" just immediately get you thinking about fried chicken made from a secret family recipe? The appeal of an old fashioned restaurant namesake is certainly no marketing ploy here, though. When you step inside this aged wonder, Al cooks your food, Al serves your food, Al tells you stories, Al sets out the table you sit at, and Al calls you by name and thanks you as you leave. It's immediately and abundantly clear that this man loves cooking a lot, loves people more, and loves cooking for people most. But I'll step away from the personal side and get to the food. I was prepared to be unimpressed. I was prepared to be let down. I was prepared for a plate of lukewarm, generic, uninspired southern food. Oh man was I wrong. The care, time, and energy that Al puts into serving his patrons is only amplified in his cooking. The flavors were bold, unusual, and simply delightful. It was somehow a magical combination of both eating your favorite comfort foods and trying something new, all at once. The Chipotle Raspberry Chicken would fit perfectly as a $32 house specialty at Husk or Southern Steak and Oyster. No disrespect to either of those fine establishments, I'm simply trying to drive home how good the food was. Top notch southern eatin'. Simply top notch.

Eat here. Seriously. A friend took me to Big Al's for lunch one day. When we first walked in, Big Al is there introducing himself as well as his staff. Everyone was exceptionally friendly, I felt more like a guest welcomed in someone's home rather than a customer. It's a traditional meat and three style restaurant. One meat, two sides, and choice of cornbread, johnny cake, or biscuit. The helpings are generous and absolutely delicious. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to finish everything, but I had no trouble cleaning it up. Plus, the sweet tea is perfect. Some places don't quite put enough sugar in it, but this is similar to the sweet tea I grew up with. If you're looking for a fast, friendly, and tasty meal for your lunch break. Go see Big Al. He'll take care of you.

Wouldn't have found this place without Yelp! I work in Metro-Center and tired of the same ol' same ol' when I found Big Al's here on Yelp. I couldn't believe it was only 1.5 miles away. I had the fried chicken, green beans and smashed potatoes and it was INCREDIBLE!!! Can't wait to stop by for breakfast!

My friend frequently posts pictures of this mythical place that serves chocolate gravy over biscuits. I've been trying to eat there for about a year now. On Saturday, it finally happened. I ordered Big Al's Breakfast (for $5.75!) and gleefully ate all of it. It was the breakfast of my dreams & I want to eat there every day. Big Al was super nice & the service was great. Can't wait to go back to try their lunch.

Don't let the name Deli fool you, there's a story behind the name and if you ask Al he will tell you. Big Al's Deli has really set the bar in both flavor and service. We stayed in Nashville for a couple days and day 1 was the deal closer for the place to eat on our stay. Great for breakfast and Great for Lunch, I would say dinner but unfortunately his hours are early. This Man not only has a big flavor packed in his food but his hospitality is like no other. Thank you Al for allowing us to experience your home cooking. I hope to come back and see you again.

Big Al's Deli is great!! Tucked away in a residential area in Salemtown this is a hidden gem. Super nice staff. Its only been open for 2 months, but it has tons of potential. I had the fried chicken, and it crispy on the outside and super juicy on the inside. I would say its the best fried chicken I've had in the area. They had tons of side items! I had the green beans and smashed potatoes and they were top notch as well...............tons of food for only 7 bucks. I can't wait to go back and try the tropical chicken.

A diamond in the rough with amazing food and service. Little Al cooked a plate of southern greatness with eggs, bacon, killer potatoes and a mile high biscuit. The only problems were that he did not have warm molasses that morning and kept tell my wife how lucky I am to have her...LoL she is blessed! To that end, this is my goto spot for down-home goodness and a great time with the locals. Alabama born

From the minute you walk into the door you are welcomed with a Hey Neighbor!! Al is not only a wonderful chef but gracious host. If something is not on the menu, but he has the ingredients, he will make it for you. Amazing cheeseburgers and french toast. I can't wait to try his normal lunch menu.

I was sold they make you feel at home. I was told to come by Saturday for the chocolate gravy, I'll have to reserve that for a special day!

If you live or work in or around Germantown and haven't eaten at Big Al's, you're doing it wrong. The food is made from scratch daily and fantastic, the prices are great and the service can't be beat.

We headed up north for a meeting in the metro area and found this place via Yelp. Al is awesome and his food is even better (big portions too). If you want to have great conversation and good food at a reasonable place try it out!

Go here. Biscuits and Gravy off the chain. A true southern gem on a residential dead end street.

You will not find a better Meat and Three than Big Al's. The portions are generous, the food is prepared with exceptional flavor and the service is attentive. What else could you want?

We stopped here when passing through Memphis and it was fantastic! Not only was the food delicious, everyone inside was incredibly nice. We had these pieces of catfish bites that were just amazing. I don't know when we'd be going through Memphis again, but when we do we will most certainly go back to Big Al's.

Amazing food and wonderful service. The Hot Dried Chicken was the best fried chicken I have had. Juicy and wonderful spices. The grits and homemade hash browns were also the best I have eaten. They owner was a very friendly and personable man and took care of you and made you feel like family and that he was cooking everything specifically for you. A+++

Oh. My. Goodness. Amazing breakfast (the hash browns and sausage gravy were especially delish!) Big Al was super friendly and more than happy to accommodate us early on a Saturday morning! The restaurant is "hidden" in the middle of a neighborhood. Don't miss meeting Big Al and his great cooking skills!

We were heading out of town and stopped at Big Al's for breakfast because of the great reviews on Yelp. We were very hesitant when we pulled up and debated whether we should go in or find somewhere else. Thankfully, we didn't judge a book by its cover. We ended up having a fabulous breakfast and considered ordering lunch to take with us. The lunch menu was unique and sounded delicious. Because of time, however, we passed up lunch and vowed to go back next time we're in the area. I had the best omelet I've ever had. My family enjoyed the French toast, biscuit sandwich and pancakes. The homemade biscuits were delicious! It wasn't just the excellent food that will bring us back. Al was cooking out on the open and was talking to everyone. The waitress, who I assume was his wife and the server, possibly his daughter, were very friendly. Impeccable service! We also lost our credit card and when we called, Al went outside to look for us. You sure don't get that type of service just anywhere. Wish we lived closer so we could be regulars. We also found that they were featured on Heat Seekers, a Food Network show. One of our goals when we travel is to find restaurants that have been showcased on that channel. We highly recommend Big Al's. We can't wait to go back!

Just the absolute nicest owner I've ever come across. The food is incredible, and surprisingly cheap. Go here if you value your life.

After several recommendation we went for a late breakfast on a Saturday morning, which according to their website they are closed on Saturday's. But we called and they were open until 1. I tried the catfish and it was by far the worst catfish I never had. The nuggets were dark but I thought it was only because of the cornmeal. But unfortunately the fish was bland and it tasted like it was fried in old grease. If you go DONT get catfish!!!

Yes 5 stars! Big Al's Deli was delish! I ordered the veggies. The smashed potatoes were fabulous! From what I could tell, those Smashed Potatoes had a little corn, maybe celery, garlic etc... I'm not sure of all that was in there but it was awesome! I also had the skillet beans, green beans and corn cakes. I loved everything about this place including the fact that its smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood. I didn't have any meat but everyone said it was delicious. I look forward to seeing more reviews on Big Al's!!

OK I am from way out of town. Food was great. All was there cooking and made the visit friendly and fun. Only thing that threw me off was the fact that this place is in the middle of a residential area. But great food.

Just stopped in for lunch today and the food was delicious- got some really good fried chicken, jerked chicken, catfish, green beans and mashed up taters.. classic meat and two in a neat old spot. Al couldn't have been more friendly and served up a great Friday lunch. I would recommend this spot to anyone!

This is the best lunch option in the Metrocenter area. This is more of a soul food place than a deli. The food is delicious and the portions are huge.

Delicious! Big Al's is awesome. Good southern soul food at its best in an atmosphere that lacks the slightest big of pretension. Big Al and his family are delightful. When you walk in to their one room restaurant, he introduces himself and asks for your name too. From there, he walks you through the day's specials. You can order one main with two sides from about a handful of rotating daily options, or you can order breakfast, which is served all day. Today, I was lucky to come in when he had turkey and dressing, something Al rarely makes. It was hands down the best turkey that I've ever had (sorry mom... yours is good too!). If it's ever on the menu... ORDER IT! I got two sides, a biscuit, bread pudding and a drink for $11 and had some to take home... not bad. I will be back to the Anderson family's kitchen!

This "deli" (more like a restaurant) opened in late June or early July, and I am so glad it did. It looks like a hole-in-the-wall type of place. It IS a hole-in-the-wall type of place, but the food is amazing. Big Al knows what he is doing. We've been twice. The smashed potatoes are always great, and the chicken seems to be different every time. The first time it was a jerk chicken with a chutney sauce, and the most recent time it was some kind of sweet chicken. Try the blackberry cobbler, too! My only complaints: The AC is not quite up to the task of keeping the place cool, but they are working on that. I'll give them five stars on the assumption that they will get that done. Also, the decor of the place is a bit shabby-looking, but I think that gives a special charm. Unfortunately, the place is hidden away in a corner of the Salemtown neighborhood, and I don't know how many people will be able to find it. I hope they are able to stick around.

Big Al's is an excellent local restaurant in North Nashville near MetroCenter. It's the best local breakfast going. While Big Al has gone on to cooking meals in heaven, his son Little Al is now the proprietor and cook. We had a delicious breakfast there after being greeted by Little Al's charming daughter before she departed for school and Little Al's grad-school student son on the cash register. The food is authentic, fresh and the environment friendly and chatty. I had an omelette with cheese and fresh mushrooms while my wife had the combo french toast/pancake platter. Don't be discouraged by finding the deli/restaurant plunked down mid-block in a residential neighborhood. This restaurant (more restaurant than a deli) is a gem! We didn't try a dessert, but the homemade desserts available give us a reason to return for a mid-day meal on our next visit to Nashville.

If you're a meat & 3-kinda person and/or grew up eating Southern food*, Big Al's definitely needs to be in your rotation. The reviews don't lie and neither do the lines. If you don't know about it, you'd best get on board now. As mentioned above, the secret's been out for a little while now and that means crowds. And when Big Al's closes mid-afternoon, that means some juggling. I *was* about to give you the sweet spot time of arriving so that you'd be sure to get a table... but I like eating here... so, you're out of luck. I will say that whether you come for breakfast or lunch, you won't have a bad experience. If there's proof that Nashville is changing, you can see it on this stretch of 4th Ave. Nine years ago, you wouldn't have seen the tlc put in to the older houses or the new construction in this section of Germantown/Salemtown. In fact, you wouldn't have seen much outside activity of any kind going on in Salemtown. It's nice to see... to a point. I hope that the people who suffered through the hard times get to stay to enjoy the largesse. Much like Big Al's. The restaurant isn't very large and you need to get in where you fit in but you'll want to do your best to fit in. Rather than a meat & 3 lunch, this is a meat & 2, with a bread. The portions are so big, you won't notice the difference. Look up at the board and check out what it is you're going to dine on for the day. On the Tuesday afternoon of my trip, I opted for fried catfish, greens, corn cake, and mac & cheese. I was so happy with my choice. First off, the catfish came in a slab and with a choice of hot sauces. Win right there. Rather than mixing the fish with the rest of the meal, the breading and flavor stood on their own. When topped with hot sauce... you've got a Nashville fave. The corncake was flavor with flavor and avoided the threat of dryness that plagues some many corncakes/breads. My greens were delicious. Not everyone can make greens. Not everyone cane make greens the country way. Big Al can make some greens. My favorite part of the meal that day, however, was the mac & cheese. It was so country-fied. Stretchy, gooey with a slight crust... these were the real deal. I felt like I was at a church pot luck. Mix these bad boys with your greens (and a little hot sauce) and you'll be in hog heaven. The only thing I wasn't too enamored with was the sweet tea. It tasted a bit artificial. Know, though, that the drinks are served in those gigantic Pizza Hutâ„¢ glasses that can hold, like, 80 oz. so your thirst is sure to be quenched. Oh, and free refills. Yeah, I might need to head over to Big Al's today... *I don't know that calling this a soul food joint is entirely accurate.
