Nice lunch out. I stopped by with my brother to check out this nicely decorated establishment in downtown Martin Tennessee...Home of the University of Tennessee at Martin. We couldn't tell if they were open...leaves and dirt on the sidewalk in front of the door seemed reminiscent of the ghost towns of the wild west. I checked the door and it was open. Someone from the back walked up and seated us. My brother wanted to leave as soon as he saw the linen tablecloths and two forks on the table (too pricey for him). I enjoy nice places...especially if the food matches the atmosphere and the service. I mentioned the dirty front to the Host. We were dressed in our farmer clothes and CO Op hats. The waiter came over with the menus and was attentive. Even made suggestions after the order of Reuben and Caesar Salads that we may want the half sandwich and salad combo. I don't know if it was the dress...the price...or him just trying to be suggestive. I assured him that my brother and I weren't the type to eat half of anything....lol. The meal was enjoyable. Great salad. The Ruben was served on marbled rye with plenty of sauerkraut. A little shy of corned beef but acceptable and a side of homemade chips...a little crunchy but flavorful. After looking around...plenty of people were coming in for lunch. I realized that the front door must really be the back door (even though it faced main street) because the hostess stand and everyone else were coming in the back..or the front...I guess. Enjoyed the meal...left the waiter a little better than average tip...just to prove I could and walked out the front...or the back... whatever. The trash was still there as we stepped over it. Confusing and dirty entrance ..to me does not promote new customers, especially in a college town that has a constant influx of new and potential customers. I know they could use more customers..there was plenty of room in the dining area. Maybe they do excellent evening business and aren't that concerned about lunch.

I give it 4 stars not because it's amazing, but because it's probably the best place to eat in Martin. Fairly good drinks and a decent beer selection make it the best, non-trashy bar in town. The prices are a little steep for the quality, but the food is actually pretty good and the location and decor definitely top anything else in town. The only real downside is the number of self-important Martin "elite" that frequent the bar at night ... it's kind of annoying to be surrounded by old, petite-bourgeoisie Martians sipping over-priced chardonnay's. But it beats being surrounded by the bar flies, frat boys and desperate chicks at the other bars.

My husband and I were visiting Martin for a romantic Valentine weekend. Our B&B owner recommended the Opera House. The atmosphere was delightful. The food on the other hand was just OK. Being from a large city where white linen table cloths are a norm I may not be the best judge for this Restaurant. We started the meal with loaded homemade chips. They should change the name to exploding chips- very messy. Tom had a rib eye and I had the grilled pork chops. Both were OK but we've had much better. The drinks were the best part of the evening - Tennessee Tea and Phantom Cosmo.

I lived in Martin for years. Anytime I come to town I always stop by. After being away, the staff still remembers my drink preferences & favorite entrees. Service can be slow, however, when you sit as a fly on the wall in the bar area & hear some of the demands of customers it's no surprise the one (maybe two) bartender gets bogged down. Food is very consistent. I used to love the green beans & would ask if they were on special that evening (a rate treat along w/ the seafood bisque). They have now added the green beans as a permanent side item. Dr. Joe & Edith take great care to check in on their customers. This establishment could pave the way for better restaurants ('more unique, local) to join the restaurant scene with them in a town dominated by fast food & Mexican restaurants.

Definitely the best place to eat in Martin. The food is very good and the atmosphere is very classy. It's true that you don't think of a place this good as being in Martin. Too bad they don't serve breakfast because Martin, TN is desperate for a breakfast venue. My wife's steak (medium rare) was cooked to perfection. I asked her how she would rate this place and she said 5 stars. Make sure you save room for dessert!

I like it here. I have to pinch myself every time. Is this place really in Martin? Its in an old building w lovely brick walls and tiled high ceilings. It actually has a nice bar too. Great ambiance. The food for this area is quite imaginative and consistently good. I dont consider it to be overpriced either. Its my fav place in TN or KY aside of Nashville.

I wanted to give it 3.5 but I do not seem to be able to do that. My partner and I were at this establishment on a Friday evening and had an enjoyable dinner. Service was a bit slow but I attibute this to the fact that it was prom night and there were some larger prom parties. But our food was all prepared well and served nice and hot. The bread was somewhat doughy and very warm served with a cinnamon butter, tasty. Then we got their chips covered with a nacho type cheese, bacon bits, chives that was not incredible, but enjoyable. I had the Scallops special which was prepared perfectly which it seems many places cannot do, it seems lots of places cook them until they taste like rubber bands probably taste. My partner had one of the steak dishes that had two large onion rings with a piece of fillet on each and then a large mushroom cap on top of that. All in all a good meal and from driving around it seem that is is probably the best place in Martin. Best regards, tony

An oasis in an otherwise barren restaurant-desert, the Opera House strives to be a high end eatery and almost pulls it off. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with its dark woods, high ceilings, soft lighting and linen table cloths. The ceiling fans in the bar area are driven by a single motor and connecting belts. I sat at the bar, in town on business. Having dined at a couple of dives before finding the Opera House, I was pleasantly surprised when I stepped through the door. The bartender was amiable and in the weeds, on account of the joint was jumping. Nevertheless, she recommended the crab stuffed tilapia and took my order promptly. A fellow barfly to my right opined that there was "nothing not good" on the menu. The tilapia was tasty, though the mashed potatoes were a little dry. Over all a good experience.

Went to the Opera House last night desperate to find a good dinner while taking summer classes at UT Martin. I found it. Service was a little on the slow side at first, but I came in with a rush at the bar and the bartender was extremely friendly. I had a bacon-wrapped 6oz filet with mashed potatoes and a good-sized caesar salad. I don't know what other reviewers had, but everything I had was absolutely delicious. My steak was done to a flawless medium-rare, juicy and flavorful without being cold in the center. The potatoes were a great compliment, and the salad, while technically a side salad, was larger than entree salads I've had at other restaurants. My bill was very reasonable, as well. My food totaled $24, which is pretty unbeatable for a good filet with sides. Tack on a couple 20 oz draft beers at $4 apiece and I had a meal I would break $60 for in Memphis for under 40 bucks. I think you'd probably be selling yourself short if you came here and just got a burger or a sandwich. The menu is nothing far-out - chicken, steak, some seafood - but clearly their steaks are a specialty, and I expect that the better chicken and seafood dishes are just as good. I'm definitely looking forward to going back next week to wrap up the semester. If you find yourself in Martin looking for a meal that isn't ordered via microphone and handed to you through a sliding window, check this place out. You'll spend a little more money than you would elsewhere, but you'll thank yourself afterwards.
