Food was delicious but the experience was not so great. We did come in at 4pm but they were officially open so... Anyway, we ordered and very shortly after placing our order the server asked if we'd pay out and the bartender would take over. Not sure why he took the table or why they couldn't transfer the check. We paid & tipped 25% keep in mind and the original server brought our food. No one ever came back or refilled drinks. In fact we never got eye contact with the bartender. Our server was still there asking that bartender if he could borrow a lighter for a few hours. After eating we walked by both and neither bartender said thank you, good bye or even asked if everything was ok. Nothing!!! On another note, we paid $50 for lunch without alcohol. So very pricey. Did I mention I'm still hungry?. We ordered asparagus as a side dish. Price was not on menu but when the 9 pieces of skinny asparagus came I looked at our check and couldn't help but mention to the server that $6 was a lot for such a small portion. Maybe that's why he never came back. I'm pretty sure the owner would be mortified by the experience we had. This is a great place to go if you're not very hungry but want to spend a bunch of money and be ignored.

This is a great, refreshing place to eat in downtown Knoxville. The atmosphere is quieter and more sophisticated than what you usually find downtown. The food is also fantastic. I had the fried chicken and waffles (a guilty indulgence), and my fiancee had the steak pizza. Both were perfectly executed, and delicious. The prices are also very reasonable. If you are looking for something a little more grown up than the usual downtown Market Square scene, this is the place to go.

Perfect place for lunch with customers or alone. Everything on the menu is outstanding. Pizza is among the best in town. Lots of beer on tap. Great atmosphere. One of my favorites in Knoxville!

Good food. Slooooooow service at lunch. Not sure I will be back.

Was in Knoxville for the Rossini Fest and stayed downtown and my sister suggested Cru. It was great. Portions were quite large. But the service was little slow.

Great wine and wonderful appetizers! I would absolutely give it five stars had the price been a bit more reasonable, and they made the mistake of telling their customer "no" instead of trying to accommodate or negotiate. Their "sliders" appetizer comes as two burgers, but I was in a party of 3 and we ordered several appetizers and simply wanted a third slider instead of two orders of sliders. This is a pretty simple request in my opinion, but they refused and simply said no (the waitress was great and did go ask the kitchen, but she was told that they can't split an order)!

Yum!!! So glad they had Gluten Free options. ^.^ They specially prepared the Artichoke Dip so we could eat it. Thank You!!! Salad to Die for!!!! We will be back.

I knew I would like this restaurant! The menu options were extensive, which is totally my type of restaurant. I ordered right away: Grilled buttermilk cornbread - what a nice twist to cornbread! This is perfect for cornbread lovers. There's a decent layer of melted cheese on this moist cornbread and a thin strip of something on top..I told the "not so hungry" dude to try it and he finished it in a matter of seconds. So far for not being hungry huh? Stuffed mushrooms - I think it was stuffed with quinoa and the sauce was thai chili. I've had better stuffed mushrooms, probably because it had cheese on it, but this wasn't too bad. It was just bland. Wild mushroom and pesto pasta - the texture of pasta was okay. I loved the amount of mushrooms and the strong pesto flavor of this dish. Wild mushroom hand tossed pizza - it took a few more bites than usual to say I liked it. It was basically a cheesy mushroom bread, which isn't a bad thing. I guess I was expecting it to have a sauce base. Creme brulee infused with orange and vanilla - you can definitely taste the infused orange and vanilla! It was hard to say which dish was my favorite. They were all pretty equally good and I couldn't stop eating them all at the same time; bite after bite of each dish.

Oh... Cru. The brunch that holds my heart. My most favorite brunch in Knoxville. Who can't get behind 3$ mimosas (with REAL pours and fresh squeezed OJ) or bloody marys? I have eaten brunch here so many times I know the menu by heart. I LOVE that they do brunch both Saturday and Sunday mornings! Brunch isn't just for Sunday, yall!!! Favorites: The French toast sandwich is the bomb-diggity and my normal goto. For extra calories (and extra awesomeness) get it with a side of their delicious gravy to pour on top. Shrimp and grits (best in town). GIGANTIC shrimp (oxymoron, anyone?) that are perfectly cooked and the grits are pure cheesy heaven. Also, any of the Benedicts are delicious and my roommate swears by the chicken and waffles. Aside from brunch, Cru has a seriously amazing 5.99 burger deal (with fries) on Wednesdays that can't be beat. Their dinner menu has delicious offerings in both entrees and small plates as well, but the value is just not quite as good. The only reason for my 4 stars instead of five is that they are lacking a little in their lunch menu. I think it is pricey for the offerings. But do yourself a favor and treat yourself to brunch!

Every time I go, I can't help but order the Americana Burger. The bacon.... oh for the love of bacon on a burger. Yum! You also can't go wrong with the Margherita pizza. The Grilled Buttermilk Cornbread is a surprisingly delightful and delicious appetizer for the carbivore in your group!

Incredible! We had a party of 6 and here are some of our highlights: The shrimp and crab bisque was amazing. I could've eaten a whole bowl and been happy as a clam for the rest of the evening. I also enjoyed the bacon wrapped pork tenderloin which was very good. My dad got the grilled salmon which was very tasty. A pizza, the American sliders and Dijon Pork Tenderloin were also ordered by our table and everyone was more than satisfied. While we were there, we recommended Cru to some other friends and they also had a great experience. We will be back in Knoxville again and look forward to coming back for another delicious dinner. Thanks!

My husband and I are loving this place. This is our 2nd visit. We've had the pizza and the Dijon pork. The Mac and cheese is out of this world. Best White Russian!

Went here for Tuesday night $2 drafts and $5 flatbreads; my DH, 20yo Son, and I met friends with adorable toddler. Three of the people at the table are beer lovers, so they talked about coffee flavors and porters and IPA's and things that I didn't understand, but the upshot was that they love Cru's offerings on draft. Had a Margherita hand-tossed pizza -- perfectly lovely; good crust, fragrant, fresh basil. Many vegetarian offerings for those eschewing meat; plenty of meat for those who crave it. Son had the dijon pork tenderloin and ate every last bite of it. He also got the white chocolate cheesecake with raspberry compote. Our friends, in the meantime, ordered mac and cheese for their little one and ended up nearly stabbing each other's hands to "help" him finish it. Must be really good macaroni and cheese! Dear Hubby got a Filet and Bleu flatbread and didn't share a single morsel. Selfish so-and-so. Oh, wait, he paid for dinner, so he's really not all that selfish. I took home half of my pizza. Yum for later! Service was excellent -- I really liked our waitress. She had to tell us the list of beers on draft three times and was so cool and funny about it. I just cannot wait to go back. A friend whose taste I trust recommended the wedge salad, so I need to go back. Soon. I mean it. ... Now? No? OK. How 'bout now?

A very positive 4+ stars. Walked in to experience the Tuesday $5 pizza happy hour. Found out that they also offer $2 draughts!? My liver might have been upset, but my wallet wasn't. Charming bartender may have gotten me the wrong pizza but the GM voluntarily gave me the one I ordered as an extra to take home. Outstanding customer service. If you are ever passing by Knoxville, as I am, drop by Crù for a lovely and cosmopolitan local experience!

Awesome Wednesday night Flatbread, Wine & Brewski specials...but it's certainly no secret to the locals judging by the crowd. Not crowded - just more than I'd expect around 9:30 on a Wednesday. Great selection of small plates and entrees. Since the pizza I got was only $5 - I decided to indulge in the Gouda Mac n Chz. Great decision.

Hmmm. This place is pretty darn good. Hadn't been here in a minute and now I wonder why I stayed away for so long. I have always been a huge grits snob. Never liked them. But their grits blew me away. My plate was clean and I wanted more. And service was impeccable at 10:50 PM. Did I say that this amazing food is available late at night? Definitely without a doubt eat here!

I've been here a few times and it's really good, but not very memorable for some reason. It's one of those restaurants I put in the "safe" category. I've yet to ever have anything bad here. The menu is huge! This actually turned me off of the restaurant initially. It was just too much for any restaurant to do well, especially a small downtown restaurant. But, like I said, everything I've had is delicious! The huge menu is probably a plus for a lot of people. There's always something to please anybody!

Long-time fan of Cru and I like this location. I recommend you sit on the bar side. The ambiance is way-different from side to side. First - they always have great happy hour specials, and some nights feature great food specials as well. $6 burger and fries, flat bread specials, etc. The menu is pretty expansive but they do pretty much everything well. It isn't out of control and you can order pretty much anything confidently. The salads are really good and the menu also features a few Shuck-esque items like fish tacos. The pork tenderloin is good as well. There are some really good options for appetizers and small plates if you want to share or get a good variety. I will also note that they have a good brunch on both Saturdays and Sundays, if I am not mistaken. Overall, I think the quality of the food is quite good for the pretty affordable prices. The service can be extremely hit-or-miss, but the last several times I've had very sweet and attentive servers. Bone appetit!

The food and the service were excellent. Usually at this type of yuppie, pretentious restaurant i complain about the small portions. Not in this case. The pork loin wrapped in bacon in a bourbon sauce, four nice sized slices, moist, flavourful, delicious... The sides were mashed potatoes (homemade) asparagus (fresh, cooked to perfection). It would have been nice if they gave you some nice crispy French bread with the meal but this is the kind of restaurant where everything is extra, bread, salad, etc... Honestly one of the best meals I've eaten out in Knoxville. And the price of $19.00 pretty decent considering this was a very very good meal. This restaurant can get busy on a Friday, Saturday night so be prepared to wait. We got their late after 830pm and still waited 15-20 minutes for a table.

One of the only places I feel you can get really fresh food in Knoxville, along with some healthier options. Great cocktails, great cheese plate. Filet is always great. Their fish tacos with mango salsa are wonderful. Their salads are creative and flavorful, no iceberg and thousand island here. On a nice night it's great to sit outside on their (small) front patio and watch the world go by.

Decided to catch a late lunch at Crú Bistro. It was a rough start; walked in and couldn't find any staff to seat us. After a few minutes, a friendly face popped up from around the corner and helped us find a seat. The staff was friendly and the environment was nice, but nothing to rave about. Great selection of wine and ended up going with a flight. Followed it up with a cheese plate filled with a Maytag, Aged Cheddar, Chèvre/Sheep, and Whole Grain Mustard Cows Milk with a plum jam, walnuts, grapes, and crostini. All delicious!!! I finished up with some classic chicken and waffles which were good as well. Overall fantastic experience and look forward to coming back.

Came here for lunch with family. It was rainy outside so they weren't very busy. We all got something off of the lunch special list and all of the food was very good! It took a little while to come out, considering how few people they were serving, but we still made it out within an hour. We also ordered dessert (the creme brûlée and the key lime cheesecake) which was a phenomenal way to end the meal. Overall, it's a great place to have lunch and the service is amazing.

There is a happy hour special every day of the week. $3 house wines M-F, $2 drafts and $5 pizza on Tues., and $5.99 burger and fries on Wed. Specialty items every weekend, and I have yet to find a brunch as good as this place anywhere in Knoxville.

  • Josh C.

I was really impressed with the fried chicken and waffle! It is a must try if you are out looking for a good brunch meal. The gouda grits were very nice as a compliment to the meal as well. The eggs Benedict is very good but the hollandaise sauce was not my favorite. The portions are smaller which can be both good and bad! As long as you don't expect a feast you will be very happy! There are plenty of shops near by to walk off your meal before climbing back in your car too.

What can I add other than Cru is just fabulous. Great atmosphere on either side but pick the bar side if it's a small intimate dinner. The menu is top notch and their drink selection is equally as impressive. The thing with Cru is that it doesn't just look that good on paper, it IS that good in reality. We are so crazy about Cru that quite often when we have a dinner with friends in Knoxville we tend to end up finishing off the night 'with a nightcap or two at Cru.' It is in close proximity to I40 as well which just makes it incredibly handy for us all to head home afterward. A real gem of a place, don't miss out.

Went here for dinner with my husband, looking for some cafe style food for the evening. Enjoyed the food, disappointed with the wine. The food really didn't disappoint. Portions were a bit skimpy. We ordered the cheese and charcuterie, which was good (though we had to laugh when the waitress identified the salami as prosciutto) but a little skimpy. Aside from the misidentification of meat, our waitress was very attentive. The atmosphere here was good, a little loud but very enjoyable, although the AC was running strong on a cool day. We then split a mushroom pizza, I have to say this was spot on. Absolutely delicious, every ingredient perfect. Still a tad bit skimpy, but not as much as the chracuterie. Highly recommended. I was really excited that they offered wine flights, which were a good deal for the money. I have done this at other restaurants and find it a great way to try several types of wine. However I have to say that we were extremely disappointed with the quality of the wine. The carmenere (which I typically enjoy) was not at all what I expect in a carmenere, to the point that I couldn't finish it and wondered if they had gotten a bad bottle. The sauvignon blanc (which I also typically enjoy) also tasted somewhat rotten. The malbec was good. I am a big fan of wine and drink all types, but I would warn against the flight and advise to order something that you're very familiar with, play it safe here. We then enjoyed a raspberry cheesecake for dessert which was also spot on. Total for charcuterie, pizza, cheesecake, and two separate wine flights, plus tax and tip was around $70. Not fantastic prices but not bad either. Would definitely return although we might not order wine.

I came here tonight while staying in town on business at the Crown Plaza around the corner from this restaurant. I chose this place based on other yelp reviews. I arrived, sat at the bar, and was greeted by Stephanie, who gave me excellent service the remainder of my visit. They have wine flights here. That's was my first order. I started with the chef soup feature which was Benton potato leak soup. I found myself scratching the bottom of the bowl for more. I then had the Southern style crab cake. The sauce was as amazing as the cake. While enjoying the wine, (thank you flights, I know what I want more of) I had the Charcuterie and cheese combo plate. I was surprised to see the different cheeses, jams, nuts..... WOW. Wish my wife was here! Chef and Owner: Please keep it this way. This place is incredible! Great service ! Great food!

Excellent wine flights and charcuterie platter. Wonderful service. Great ambiance & decor. Great for date night or something a little more intimate with a few close friends. Love this place.

Fantastic place for dinner. Prices are very reasonable and the food was VERY good. Service was spot on perfect. 4 diners and we had the skillet cornbread and the cheese plate for appetizers. Both were really good but the cheese plate was incredible. Moved on to the Charcuterie plates, pizza and the smoked gouda mac n cheese was so good it was sinful. For dessert we split the salted caramel mouse and it was heaven in your mouth. The chef here is on top of his game. Whomever created the recipes and dishes deserves major awards. Very well thought out menu thats big on visual appeal and more importantly is amazingly tasty. Highly recommend this as a great place for dinner. And as a very picky martini drinker I have to say that the bartender is one of maybe 3 or 4 that have ever made one to my liking (dirty dirty dirty). If you like good food with big flavors, do yourself a favor and try this place out. You won't be sorry.

I had the tomato basil pasta, I might as well have been eating a tire. They over cooked the pasta. If you can't do pasta right there is a problem.

I absolutely love this place. One of my favorite restaurants from Knoxville. They offer great variety and I love that they have tapa style entrees. I recommend the blue cheese and filet pizza; steak sliders; or calamari!

My husband and I have had dinner at Cru multiple times and have enjoyed it immensely every time. We've ordered a variety of items from the menu and everything we've tried has been delicious. My favorite menu item, though, might their burger - they make an absolutely spectacular burger. Flavorful and juicy and fresh. They've also got a lunch special every Wednesday - burger and fries for $5.99 - that I take advantage of somewhat regularly.

Burger Night Special 1. Food was above average 2. Beer needed to be returned due to poor quality 3. Service was poor- had to ask at least twice for everything, server was unfriendly and unhelpful. If you bring your own beer and serve yourself it might be enjoyable.

I really like the location because the 100 block of Gay street is under utilized and considered out-of-the-way by the folks who "come to town" for dinner and a movie. Dinner can get pricey but there are reasonable lunch specials, and the environment is fine by me: a little dark, but spacious for a place that can also feel a bit private. I would detest this place if I had to wait for a drink at the bar, and I would love this place if they occasionally had live jazz. As it is, I like this place, especially when I want to be downtown but not feel like I'm on display. I cannot give this place 4-stars just now, but it could easily be a 4-star place in the future.

5 stars is not enough for THE BEST food I have had in Knoxville and the surrounding area... everything we have ordered has been not only gorgeous, but so flavorful, well thought and prepared to perfection.... Let's see, here's what we've had at Cru... SHRIMP & CRAB BISQUE, HUMMUS, SWEET CHERRY PEPPER CALAMARI, FRIED CHICKEN AND WAFFLE, BAKED BRIE, STUFFED MUSHROOMS, CRU AMERICANA BURGER, TENDERLOIN SLIDERS, SMOKED GOUDA MAC & CHEESE, SEARED PETIT FILET, CHOCOLATE FLOURLESS TORTE WITH RASPBERRY, BANANAS FOSTER CRÈME BRULEE..... can't wait to try more of the menu... I have to say my favorites are the Tenderloin Sliders, rare, with sauteed mushrooms and boursin cheese, shrimp and crab bisque and THE BAKED BRI with Hazelnut Streutel, Hot Pepper Jam and Tarragon Grapes.... I love this Bistro and will return as often possible and we will bring friends!!!!

I'm a big fan of Cru out West, but man oh man... a different experience Downtown. The advertised valet service wasn't around when we arrived, which wasn't a big deal and apparently they appeared just after we had driven up as the couple we were with were able to use it. There was one large party and two couples inside and the staff appeared completely overwhelmed. We were there for a holiday dinner with another couple. It took at least 15 minutes to get our drink order. Then another 15 to get our bottle of brut. We ordered, including some hummus as an app. But the app never showed up...neither did two of our sides (the side orders were quickly remedied) After another long wait the food arrived and it was excellent as expected. And to her credit, the server was pleasant and did apologize, but honestly, why would they be under-staffed a week before christmas. Cru will have to step it up if they want return customers. The concept is the same as out West. Smaller plates. Good prices, I had filet sliders with boursin and frites which were excellent. My fiance had the benton's bacon pizza. The other couple had a pork loin and club and all reported excellent food. It was 1/2 price wine night and the selection on the list was good. Our champaign was $11 a bottle which is hard to beat in a restaurant. We'll go back, but if the service is as slow the next time, repeat visits won't happen.

My review would be much higher, but I have to factor in the cost/value. Nice, cozy, relaxed ambiance and friendly service. The food was very good, but not quite outstanding. But my Gawd! $40 with tip for what amounted to an afternoon snack for two. Sad to say that I won't be back. $20 would have seemed a bit pricey for what we received.
