Would give 3.5 stars if I could. First the service and atmosphere were very good. Attentive manager worked with wife's gluten allergy. Menu had a lot of choices. The salad bowl was fine and the bread soaked (literally) in garlic butter were indulgent. Unfortunately, the entrees were just ok. I prefer lighter and less cooked marinara and Altruda's sauce was heavily cooked and a bit lacking in salt and seasonings. No bad, just a bit bland. I would go back if in the area but this place is just okay.

The garlic rolls were good, but the pasta was very bland. There aren't any good italian restaurants in Knoxville, Altruda's is no exception.

I've never understood why everyone in Knoxville loves Altruda's so much. The atmosphere is very nice and I do like the house salad, but I've never had a good entree. I've never had a "bad" meal, but I've never had a meal that could justify the price. If you take four dollars and a Kroger Shopping card you can top their spaghetti at your house.

I've been to Altruda's a few times now. The rolls and salad are pretty awesome, I'll give them that, but the rest of the food....? Eh. It's not terrible, but the menu is a little boring, and it's terribly over-priced. I had the Pollo Dill last night, and it was pretty good, but for $20.95 I expect more than some pasta with a few tiny chunks of chicken and a couple shreds of tomato.... If they want to charge $20.95, it should be a whole chicken breast, and hell, some artichoke hearts or something in there along with actual chunks of tomato. I don't understand why they give you a side of spaghetti and meat sauce with items like the Scaloppine al Limone. Meat sauce doesn't go with anything in a butter-lemon-wine sauce. BUT if you ask for fettucine instead, which would actually compliment your meal, they charge you, what, $3.50-4.00 extra. It's just ridiculous. If you want basically the same restaurant but with a better menu and slightly better rolls, go to Provino's in Chattanooga. I was excited when a friend told me about Altrudas when I moved here from Chattanooga, but yeah, Altrudas is no Provinos.

The salad was terrific. Best part of the dinner. The entree was good and more authentic than I thought it was going to be. Better than any Italian chain restaraunts. Service was friendly and fast.

Can't believe this place would ever get a bad review! We lived in Knoxville for years and came here weekly! The rolls are homemade and delicious! Be sure to get lots of butter to dip them in while eating! The salad is amazing and the dressing is to die for! Luckily, they bottle it now so I always get a couple bottles to take home when I'm in town! The staff is awesome and Dan always remembers us when we visit, though it is only once or twice a year now since we moved away. Try the cannelloni or lasagna and get a piece (or two) of the peanut butter pie to go. You will not be disappointed...

LOVE there Garlic Bread Rolls! They bring them out soaked in melted butter with fresh crushed garlic all over the top of the rolls...amazing goodness...it's like eating little baby cherubs!

This restaurant has been in business for at least 18+ years. The decor is very intimate and suits the restaurant well. I ordered the lasagna and started with the salad and bread. The salad is something else. Fresh and tasty with lettuce, onions, garbanzo beans and grated cheese among other great ingredients. The rolls were hot, toasty and covered very nicely in garlic butter. After many rolls and several helpings of salad, my lasagna arrived. Hot, fresh, covered in delicious melted cheese- it is the best lasagna I have eaten in a long time! The price is certainly worth it. Will I return? Oh most certainly!! I still want to try the Veal!! Incredible food!!

Got take out while here with my buddies in Knoxville. As usual with my group of friends, we way over ordered and got just about a little of everything! One of the stars was my sausage dish with eggplant and pasta. Some of the other dishes included a veal scallopini, a veal parmigiana, some tortellini, a whole bunch of salads, a side of Fettuccine Alfredo with ham and peas, and their famous garlic dinner rolls! We all totally understand that take home food is just not the same as eating in the restaurant. However, the quality of the food that we ate at the house was still very delicious as I have always remembered. Of course, this delicious food paired with great wines doesn't hurt the experience either. I believe the universal favorite of the night was the sausage dish that I got, followed by the veal parmigiana. All had really good flavors and I guess we were just so damn hungry that it didn't matter! The wine dulled any imperfections that we could possibly find in the food. This is a solid choice for Italian food while in Knoxville.

This place is awesome. The service was second to none. The food was delicious. The ambiance was perfect. We shared the appetizer sampler which had fried artichokes, best mozzarella sticks I've ever had and fried artichoke hearts... Yum. I had the combination spaghetti for my entree and it was wonderful. I am a huge fan of their red sauce. My friend tried it and didn't like it but to each their own. Everyone loved their meals and I will definitely be back! By the way, I have never left a yelp review before but I had to because this dinner was great.

Wow, I didn't think it was possible to find real authentic Italian cuisine in Knoxville of all places but I did. I had the veal a limone and it was delicious. The pasta was piping hot and obviously home made. Coming from Boston I know what the real deal is and this place has it. As soon as you walk in the door you feel like family. The owner is very engaged in his restaurant and does everything possible to ensure that your experience is nothing short of excellent. I believe this place has been here for more than 25 years which is no easy task in today's world. There is a reason and you owe it to yourself to find out. Oh did I mention the Tiramasu?? YUM!! Enjoy and manga ( thats eat in Italian)!!

Major disappointment! Have raved about his placed to out of towners and went to dinner. Nothing was up to its past standards Rolls were substandard as was the salad. Food and appetizers were served cold. What a horrid and expensive mistake. Having loved this place in the past, this was my last visit!

I would never come back... Old atmosphere, food tastes like I could make it at home. Prices are extremely high for what you get. The salad is made of ice burg, the rolls were the best part, but were submerged in butter and were a little soggy. I have had some pretty good Italian and this is not one of them... I really wish it was because I love Italian and was looking for a new place to try! If you feel like some average Italian, skip this place and go to Olive Garden instead.

Visited with family, after the recommendation of my dad's co-worker. OLD SCHOOL BABY!!!!! I Loved this place! Our dinner party included my parents, aunt, grandmother and niece and nephew. So to say the least we had a varied crowd of tastes. We made a reservation and I highly recommend you do the same. Place was packed when we arrived at 6:50pm on a Friday Night. Lobby area was not full, but busy. We had our table at 7pm on the spot. From the Apps. to the Dinner our server was spectacular. She was always checking water, clearing plates, right on target with service. For the Appetizer we had the Calamari and the Fried Mushrooms. Both done to perfection and served in a timely manner. My dinner, I had the Chicken and Eggplant at the recommendation of my server. I rarely ask for recommendations on dinner but the menu was pretty extensive with most of the Italian dishes that I like so I threw my order to chance. Our server knew the menu and was very knowledgeable with her recommendation and even felt like she went over board with what she was telling us. I said no that is exactly what I wanted was info across the menu. Again great job on service. For me the Chicken and Eggplant was a great option and it tasted perfect and was a very generous portion, as our whole party enjoyed everything that we ordered. The sauce (Sunday Gravy) is what really had the entire table talking. It was a very good sauce that was with all the dishes that we ordered. Our whole party was happy and enjoyed all our meals. This restaurant has been in the Knoxville area for some time and you can tell that it's remained Old School and true to itself. It's pretty large inside and can easily accommodate large groups of diner's. Most of the restaurant is sectioned off into individual dinning area's. Most of the clientele was Older Couples, and Families, and larger parties. So I am thinking they have a lot of regular diners that keep coming back year after year. It strikes me as a place that families go to over several generations. Our family will be back for sure! This is not a chain place so don't expect it to be.. It's Mom and Pop all the way which is exactly the type of dinner with my family we were looking for. For dessert I had the homemade cannoli! Which was TOP NOTCH. When you are looking something that serves traditional Italian family food, give Altruda's a try!

Good by not great. I found the menu to be a little odd. I can't really put my finger on why, but it seemed like the overall selection of Italian dishes was a little bit uninspiring. The dishes were all pretty large portions. I noticed many of them were swimming in olive oil at the bottom of the plate. The bread served ahead of the meal was as well. My meal , pasta Anthony which was basically rigatoni, diced ham and olive oil again was serviceable but did not leaving me wanting to come back. The restaurant itself has a bit of an old world charm. Service was very attentive and good, accommodating our big party quite well.

I prefer local restaurants, because the stuff they serve at chains is so often pre-made and reheated. Local places tend to be more likely to make real food with fresh ingredients. Altruda's didn't get the memo. A $20-$30 entree can be worth the money, but not when it's made with frozen spinach. Frozen produce is an insult to the scallops, and to the diner. The antipasto plate was piled with items that all came out of a can. Canned mushrooms, artichokes, etc. I was most insulted by the canned olives. What Italian restaurant doesn't have decent olives? I can stay home and make far better food, and it won't involve any cans. The red sauce is decent, so I'll give them that.

  • Andrew M.

I have never given a review; however this restaurant impelled me to do so. We ordered the calamari and it came out over fried and tastless. My dish was disgusting. It tasted like frozen chicken which had been heated in the microwave and mixed with store bought sauce. Finally, the price reflected a top quality restaurant but the food didn't match up. If you would like average italian, I recommend going elsewhere and paying less.

Wow! Some of you reviewers seem to be big time Olive Garden fans. No, not even that refined- palate wise. Bet you would 5 star beefaroni or any canned pasta. My wife has eaten here 30-40 times before we met and we've eaten here together another 10 or so. This restaurant is consistent in both service and food. Recipes are unique and have been passed down for years. Paul is the owner and has prob 30 yrs of experience. Salad and garlic rolls are unique and excellent. Hard to hold off till the main course arrives. Whoever said the salad was iceberg lettuce needs a course in vegetable identification plus and must have missed the onions, garbanzos, beets, and all the cheese. All the entrees we have had were excellent and we've had most. If you don't like garlic, you're not gonna like the rolls. I've learned to never trust a vegetarian or someone who dislikes garlic

  • Rachel S.

Yet another time where having to give only one averaged star rating is unfair, so let me break down 3 stars to what it seems several other reviewers have also said: - 5 stars for service. Our server was just perfect, couldn't ask for better. - 5 stars for dessert. Neck and neck competition with Savellis for the best Tiramisu in town, IMO. Would go back just for this. - 4 stars for garlic rolls. If you're going to eat bread, might as well go all out and eat it dripping in oil/butter and lots of garlic. Found myself wanting maybe a bit of herbs there, too. - 3.75 stars for the wine list. I found a bottle that paired well enough and enjoyed it, but only saw maybe 1-2 more choices I would consider for the price. - 3.75 stars for atmosphere. It's clearly a family restaurant and the dark interior is nice when you want to forget the world outside for a while. Unless you're a designer of some sort, it's unlikely the inside will bother you during your meal. So with all these good enough stars, what's left? Well, the rest of the food, sadly. - 1 star for the food. In reading other reviews and responses, it seems there is a line in the sand perhaps, that some people maybe have made a tradition of coming here and enjoy the dining experience as a whole, which I can understand, and the attentive owners are quick to remind those that don't like the cuisine that many surely must like it because these are old recipes and they've been in business for a long time here. What seems to make it special for some just makes it dated to others. Maybe there's enough of a loyal following that my opinion doesn't matter, and it's just a difference of opinion. That happens sometimes. The food was just plain old plain to me. Bland, even. When I think Italian, I think fresh tomatoes and herbs, balsamic vinegars, rich cheeses, spicy sauces, in short - flavor, and lots of it. All of the non-dessert food was just really short on flavor. Boyfriend's meal had great texture, but the flavor? I'm not sure if I could have picked it out if blindfolded from a microwave entree from a grocery store. If I can't tell the difference in a $2 entree and a $20 entree, that is a problem. In 2015, with cooking shows everywhere and the average palette being expanded to include aged balsamic vinegars and even Kroger has a large fancy cheese section in the store, your average diner off the street now has higher expectations and greater ability to cook the same things at home. I just want to reiterate that I say this only hoping to help push the kitchen to produce more interesting food and help your business, and I know it stings to read reviews that aren't stellar, but hopefully this criticism is constructive and I wish you all the best in the future.

Had a great Italian dinner here. Menu is extensive and very high quality. I had the veal scallopine al limon. Rich but tasty. Salad bowl served family style was excellent. Topped of dinner with a canoli. They make the filling from scratch.

Not good - I had really high hopes for this place since I heard great reviews from coworker. We went Sunday night - the place was empty. They sat a couple in the booth right next to us so we heard their whole conversation. The decor of the place was dark and old. The bottomless salad is just iceberg lettuce but the dressing is good and the rolls are just yeast dinner rolls soaked in butter and garlic. I ordered the baked ziti and my husband ordered the lasagna. It was tasteless and bland. I could have made something better at home. For a $40.00 meal I am very disappointed and wont got there ever again!

I have been dining at Altruda's since the mid-90's during my college days. Now, our family makes it a MUST to eat there whenever we are in Knoxville. My children always talk about the rolls, food is great, always excellent service and relaxing atmosphere. Feels like a family-run restaurant that you cannot find at a "corporate chain establishment".

Really enjoyed my meal here, the bread was great with all the garlic and my manicotti was fantastic. Will revisit when I get the chance, nice atmosphere with good service. It seems priced slightly high compared to other places I've been similar to this but not enough to keep me away.

Went here on a recommendation from a friend and it was a plesant surprise. When it comes to Italian food many folks have their do's, don'ts, hates and must-haves. Not being raised Italian I have only my belly to decide what is "true Italian" fare. My gut say Altruda's is yummy! First off I love, love, love that you don't get a half pound of pasta served to you as or with your dish. I had the scallops florentine and *loved* the amount of spinach it was prepared with. Also, the scallops were tender and the cream sauce was not overpowering. In addition, I *loved* (how many times can I use "loved" without y'all taking it seriously? Who cares? lol) the fresh grated cheese on the dinner salad. The service was extremely attentive and the only things keeping me from giving it 5 stars was the salad being drowned in dressing, the sausage just being "meh" and the beer being served slightly warm. Nevertheless, be picky in choosing your meal and ask your server for recommendations...our guy Tony did an excellent job in setting us up for what to expect.

This place is not my favorite. Knoxville has trouble with Italian food. There is no consistency at this place. The Fettuccine Alfredo is not very good. That is a basic. When places cannot conquer a basic I move on. Service was pretty good. I am with Charlie on this one but I don't see what people see in this place. I will not return because the food was not anything special. Next, please.

My boyfriend, my best friend, and I stopped by on a whim last week on our way to a Halloween party. We were treated very well in spite of us being dressed up for Halloween. The atmosphere is dim, quiet, and very relaxing. It wasn't very crowded for a Saturday night around 8pm. This would be a great place for a date! We were seated very quickly and were quickly served salad and garlic rolls. Both were OK but the bread would be so much better if they didn't drown it in butter. None of us had ever been there before but we all ordered the Pollo Amanda. It was very good and I'm dying to go back for more! It's a very citrus-y vinegar-y chicken served with your choice of pasta. Our drinks were good but very strong. The only reason they didn't get the 5th star was our waiter. He would just dash off while you were talking to him mid-sentance. It was pretty annoying.

I love Altruda's. Great Service always. The food is excellent. Yes, it is American Italian not authentic but that's ok with me. Try the Altruda's house salad. Great dressing. The mushrooms appetizer is good. I recommend the Snapper Limone. I say give Altruda's a try.

This is a craving I am guilty of indulging. It is not exactly an authentic Italian restaurant, but it is EXACTLY what most of us Americans want when we "think" we want Italian food - read: copious amounts of cheese, butter, and garlic covering absolutely everything. So if you really have a hankering for buttery fried artichokes, something stuffed with cheese & covered with cheese then baked, and what's actually a pretty decent salad, go here. The atmosphere is cute. There are in fact a few pretty good dishes in re: to the veal selections, and their cannoli is my absolute favorite in town.

Yuck. Worked in an Italian restaurant for two years. The food (believe it or not) was worse than chain restaurants like Olive Garden, etc....this chain isn't bad and doesn't have bad food - but you would think a single restaurant with one cuisine would have better if not A LOT better food. Left feeling like I just ate in the grade school cafeteria. YUCK. Not recommended. Sorry.

Not good. So given the menu, this couldn't really be transcendent dining. On the other hand, it could be good. The give you bottomless salad and garlic bread. The salad is iceberg with a separated oil and vinegar dressing, a wedge of beefsteak tomato, 2 beet slices, and some cucumbers. The garlic bread is sister shubert yeast rolls covered with garlic butter -- not bad. Had the Pollo Canzanese, Carbonera, and Clams with white sauce. Of those, the clams were fine. The carbonera was gummy, the chicken's sauce was not to our liking (tasted like a lipton soup mix type deal). We also made a misstep on the wine selected, but I'll take the blame for that one. No complaints about the service, which was fine.

Best Italian in Knoxville. The salad is seriously one of the best in town, of course smoothered in cheese, and the garlic rolls are one of a kind. A must. The inside looks to be an outdated mob movie, but please don't let that distract you. I am not a big fan of their spaghetti but the thing I dream about is their Snapper al Limone. I promise you , you've never had anything like it. Go ahead and getya some and thank me later.

This was my first experience with Altruda's and I'd heard a lot about it, so I was expecting a good dining experience. The salad and rolls were excellent, as was our fried clam appetizer. I was craving fettuccini alfredo, so I ordered that dish anticipating some FETTUCCINI noodles swimming in a creamy, cheesy sauce. When it arrived, I was surprised to find tiny, curly egg noodles in a very bland, tasteless sauce. This was nothing like fettuccini alfredo. I would have been better off going to Olive Garden. I wouldn't eat it. When the waiter returned, I said that it wasn't good, that I was expecting fettuccini noodles, and that the sauce was bland. For some reason, he kinda argued with me about the dish (as if someone other than yourself can convince you that a traditional plate is palatable, when it deviates from the norm and is clearly NOT what is stated on the menu. EGG noodles and cheese-less sauce!). I wasn't trying to be difficult, but this was not fettuccini alfredo. I've never been served anything like this before, totally bland and weird. I ended up NOT eating because it would have taken 20-30 minutes to get another meal (my mother and sister had already been served). It was really unsatisfying and inconvenient to sit there with nothing to eat (I'd not eaten since 11 this morning and this was about 5:30). My mother ordered the Limone Grupper, or some fish, and it was completely dry. She ate it because she didn't want to make a scene after my fettuccini mishap. I'm usually easy to please and have worked in food service, so I didn't want to give anyone a hard time, but this was not good food. I've heard a lot about this restaurant, although some reviews have been mixed, and this was a really sub-par experience. I won't be returning.

We celebrated our first anniversary with Altruda's (because we went there on our first date 7 years ago). The salad and garlic rolls are always amazing....but then again any piece of bread soaked in butter and raw garlic is ok with me. I had the shrimp dill and my husband had the veal marsala. My shrimp were a little overcooked but overall the dish tasted amazing. My husband practically licked his plate clean so it must have been good (I don't like mushrooms or I would have stuck my fork in when he wasn't looking). The fried artichokes were a delight as well...next time I will ask for a side of marinara to dip them in. The service at Altruda's is 5-star. Our server was polite, quick and extremely patient. The table behind us took about 45-60 minutes to place their order and not because they were enjoying the atmosphere and a glass of wine because they tied up the section's server with about 100 questions. You are a vegetarian....it is not that hard.

Compare to other reviews, I have mostly pluses for Altruda's. Friendly staff greet you on the way in, and when you leave. We began our diner with baked stuff mushroom with meat and veggie. Came to table hot from the oven, and had just the right amount of cheese and herb that you can taste the mushroom without overpowering. The accompanied house salad had nice chill veggies, and the garbonzo beans added a nice touch. Half way through the dinner rolls - they were puff ball nice Italian rolls, my wife pointed to the garlic (real minced) oil dip on the bottom of the bowl. I split the next roll in half and soaked up the heavenly mixture. It was divine. I had already ordered sphaghetti and meat ball, but I bet the Linguine Al vongole will be divine when I order it on our next visit. Secret to every linguini and clam is the garlic flavor oil. I ordered sphaghetti and meat ball as a test to every new Ital restaurant to see how they do on this simple classic, and also because I don't get tired of it ever. I find their marinara sauce must be home-made, because I can taste the slow cooked tomatoes and herbs and they must have squeezed the excess water from the tomatoe before they simmer it because it was pulpy and not soggy. All in all I dont really see where the negative reviews are coming from. Far as I know it is not under new management. If I have to complain, their doggie-box is too big. They must have just one size. Many people leave with the to-go boxes including my wife who couldn't finish the nice tender breaded lemony chicken breast.

Paul and his friendly staff know how to make you feel welcome from the minute you walk in the door. The ambiance is good and so is the food. Food is served with the best garlic bread knots you have ever eaten. The soup and salad are also great! My husband and I have tried a variety of items on the menu and they are all good. My favorite: Red Snapper Parmesan. They are planning on introducing a new line of Mama Altruda's Italian foods for the grocery. I think they're going to be excellent!

Excellent fried artichokes hearts, salad, garlic bread rolls and the chicken limon is the best. I have tired some of Altrudas pasta dishes with no much success, its still a great place to dine.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
