My family's been frequenting Abuelo's since they've opened, and I've only ever had one issue when dining here. My experience this past weekend was pleasant, the food was good, filling, and cooked to expectations. While previous users seen to have issues with the restaurant, I think it's useful to keep in mind that it's not going to be "real" Mexican food. It's a chain restaurant in the US--what do you expect? However, my waitress was professional, my service was better than expected, and my meal was delightful. I'd be happy to visit again.

First of all, screw you Yelp for not letting me check in here while I was sitting at the table. That said, this place blows. The service was fine. Don't get me wrong. But when the only Mexicans in a place are busing tables, you're in trouble. This place is about as Mexican as Kentucky Fried Chicken. My mom had the quesadilla. I made better with a sack of mission totrilla's and frozen chicken strips last week when I came home drunk. My wife had the steak tacos. See above. My meal, however, was the true winner of them all. The creme de la crap in this faux Mexican place. I had the enchiladas with the papas. WTF, Abuelos?! I now have something in common with my dog- I've eaten a puddle of vomit. The enchiladas were unceremoniously thrown on the plate alongside a heap of refried beans (canned) and the alleged pepper mashed potatoes (papas), thrown under a broiler, and tortured until they all ran all over the place. The mashed taters might have been serviceable had they just been placed on my plate and not nuked unil they had a crust on top and milky cruddy liquid underneath. Hence the comparison to vomit. The enchiladas were so foul I made my wife promise to kick me in the stomach if I ever try to order them again anywhere but a REAL Mexican place. Look, this place fancies itself the "Mexican Embassy." STop it. Drop that name. This is a travesty. I've had some good Mexican good in my hometown of Knoxville, and this dump just craps all over the reputation of Mexican food in general. Head east to Pelanchos, or WAY east to Soccer Taco. Go to El Charro near Lovell Rd if it still exists. Hell, go to TACO BELL. Ugh. Done with this place. DONE.

I love Mexican and this place bores me to tears. They put all their money into the location and building and none of it into the food. An embarrassment to those who love Mexican food.

My husband and I stopped in after a matinee movie on a late Sunday afternoon. The bar menu was great and very reasonably priced. We had chicken quesadilla and carnitas tacos. My husband is a foodie and hard to please - well he loved it! We also really enjoyed the 3 different salsas provided with the very thin chips! The staff was pleasant and proficient. This experience made us regret that we hadn't visited sooner. Our loss. The earlier reviews are out of date or just plain inaccurate.

First off. I have a food allergy to onion. With that said, I came in and asked some questions about the menu. The waitress went above and beyond on finding out what I could have and what I couldn't. After I ordered, the manager came out and brought me a special made onion free salsa. Also told me that they were going to send out a couple of different toppings with my food that was onion free. Everyone here at Abuelo's went above the call of duty to make sure my family and I (there were 8 of us) were very well taken care of!

This faux Mexican place offers super bland chain food for people who don't really like Mexican food. They seem to substitute cheese for spices. I have nothing positive to say about this place.

Yeeeessss!!! This restaurant is beautiful. Located in a very busy area of a bunch of stores, high in traffic called turkey creek. We walked in and were seated immediately by the nice hosts. Our waiter was at our table within minutes and took are drink order. While bringing those, he brought over two bowls of tortilla chips with four different kinds of salsa. All very delicious. Had the firecracker shrimp as an appetizer, small portion but just enough and very tasty. I need the recipe! For my entree, I had the enchiladas de cozumel. It was three guacamole filled enchiladas, smothered in white wine sauce with shrimp and scallops. Side of sliced vegetables also. That entree was amazingly perfect and delicious. Definitely can't wait to come back.

Holy guacamole! My reasoning behind 3 stars. For 1 our waitress was amazing! Beyond amazing! 2. When the food came out, it was so hot we had to wait a solid 10 min before we could even start to eat it. Also.. the plates were on fire! 3. The portion size is larger than Texas and we lived in Tx. Haha 4. The chips and dips were amazing! Super yummy ! Ordered a trio mix of queso and such.. 5. Margaritas were delish.. Last but not least... the food was way too salty. I was swollen for the next 2 days. I don't mind some salt.. but yikes. My feet looked I was going towards the end of my 3rd trimester.. Eek The atmosphere was really nice and it was slammed on the night before VDAY. Service was good! It was unfortunately a one hit wonder for us

I've been eating at Abuelos for years & it never disappoints. I've never had a bad meal & it isn't your usual bland fare that every other Mexican restaurant in town serves since everything is made to order & they'll make it as spicy as you'd like. The servers & host staff are always efficient & friendly. The Mi Abuelo's Manhar & chocolate flan are two of my very favorites!

Our server was at the table in less than 60 seconds, on a game day. Wow! She explained the new computer ordering system and made suggestions on food. The drinks and food were cold and hot as they should be and the cups are fresh. Ask for Clair!

Hoped for more... Started with three different dips.. Chips were too thin to really dip.. I prefer thicker more flavorful chips.. My wife got the steak chimichanga.. Large dish but on the Big plate most of it was the sides.. Beans sour cream rice.. I ordered the chicken nachos.. Nothing great or filling.. A lot more sides than meat and substance.. Nice decor.. Just wouldnt order either of these dishes again..

Much nicer decor and atmosphere than your typical looking Mexican restaurant, prices also higher. I had a chili relleno and an enchilada. I thought the food was very good. Best chili releno I've had in a while . Rice was also very good and refried beans were decent. My wife had the steak fajitas which I think she felt were just OK. She said the meat was a little tough, dry and overcooked. The 4 salsa sauces they give you with the chips were a nice touch. Service was good. This place is probably on par food wise with chueys, but pricier (20 to 30 percent more $) and a much nicer atmosphere.

Awesome Mexican! Service is 5 stars. Food is 5 stars! Drinks are 5 starts and Deserts are 5+ stars! Never had a bad experience with anything here drive an hour just to go eat and pass many other Mexican choices along the way.

Driving through town. Ran across this and decided to give it a try. Johnathan our waiter brought out 4 different salsas all very good. Chips were tender and warm. Tip notch service from Johnathan made the experience really great all the fid was really good. It not an authentic me kindab place, but the food was still very tasty for all 4 of us. I would recommend.

I love this place! I'm weird I like to sit under the "sky" haha. I have not met one of their dishes I didn't like. This particular visit I was introduced to what could quite possibly hold the title of Best Margarita I've ever had and I am not joking. It was a celebratory margarita for their anniversary. I worked our server for the recipe and she was just a peach about it. She was also a very good server. I have since recreated the margarita for family and friends and it is delish!! So that not withstanding the food is FANTASTIC!! I love the medalions of chicken with chorizo and cheese stuffing one of my faves. The salsas they bring to mix your own make for great pre dinner fun with your dining companions too. So to wrap it up and bring it home Good food with equally good service makes for a great dining experience time and time again.

Nothing to write home about. The food quality is what you would expect at any mexican restaurant. They entice you with nice decor and bar but don't be fooled the food does noymt live up to the marketing. The food is exceptionally overpriced for the quality. Unfortunately, head to Chipolte; you'll get bettet quality meat and produce and save time and money. I rarely recommend fast food over sit down restaurant but this is a very mediocre chain. The only good thing is the salsa if you can overcome the stale chips.

Had some yummy Mexican food with a friend today. The food was very good. Their menu has a large selection so this will please everyone. Their drinks are not the best, but it may have just been that bartender. I would definitely go back.

Abuelos! Love this place. Friendly smiles are sure to greet me as soon as I walk in, and excellent service follows. Just like the service, the food is spectacular. Most of it is made from scratch, in house, including their 4 (count 'em, FOUR) salsas and flour and corn tortillas. They have many classic Tex-Mex items, but Im really into Abuelos food for the more creative dishes they offer. And no, they don't have "that white cheese dip", so don't embarrass yourself by asking for it. Check out their jalapeño cheese fritters, green chile chicken quesadilla for starters. The stuffed chicken medallions and tilapia Veracruz are the two most popular items on their menu (and both are excellent), but my favorite thing in house is the Pasta La Paz. The pork tenderloin also ranks high on my list. For dessert, check out the made from scratch flan or the tres leche cake! If you need to wet your whistle, Abuelos has a great happy hour from 3-7pm every day. Their hand shaken margarita (my fave) is $3 bucks off on special. If you want to try Mexican that's not the same as all those other places around here, look no further.

It gets 3 stars because the day we tried it we were informed the thing we were enjoying the most was being taken off the menu! The salsas were just ok, I thought I was just being picky but my husband is so very not and he agreed. We got fajitas for two with pescado (removed from the menu), bacon stuffed shrimp x2 and chicken. The pescado was amazing and would be worth 5 stars alone. The bacon wrapped shrimp were VERY good. My husband didn't remember them as being that good so on our second visit I had him try one of mine and he changed his mind! The chicken was ok. We loved the charro beans and cilantro lime rice. Their signature side, the con chile, was just alright, I felt bad since it was supposed to be their signature item! The same for the casserole. Overall, if you're looking for fresh you'll find it here. We're still so disappointed about the pescado fajitas we haven't been back and likely won't. Powers that be - if you read this bring it back!

Went here for dinner on my birthday (Sun). Menu has changed from the quality food it used to be. Not for the better!!! Mediocre at best. I was with my husband and kids. Everyone of us that ate the beef, got sick! Needless to say, won't be eating there again. Wasn't impressed with the service either. My margarita was the only good thing about the meal.

Disappointing! This used to be the best Mexican restaurant in Knoxville. Now, the prices are ridiculously high & this type of food should not have experienced such a huge increase even with inflation & price of goods going up recently. Service was also lacking greatly...waitress offered a refill as she brought the check, really you didn't take care of me all lunch now you want to salvage at the end. Honestly, not sure I'll ever return to Abuelos after today's experience.

Wonderful Experience! We were greeted at the door and were immediately made to feel at home by the friendly atmosphere. The open air feel is reminiscent of many meals we had in Mexico. Our waitress, Brandi, brought us three different kinds of complimentary salsas, that she explained were all made on site. She also said that we could have as much as we wanted. We mixed our own combination to suit our heat level. Fun! The chips were so thin, warm and fresh, they hardly held the salsa...wonderful!!! Brandi explained to us that it was their policy to allow as many substitutions to the listed menu items as necessary. I compiled a burrito, enchilada, taco plate that didn't look like anything listed. Most all entrees come with a selection of 2 signature sides. Brandi suggested the espinaca casserole. It is a combination of spinach, sautéed and seasoned mushrooms, onions, garlic, peppers and cheese. I had more than enough to eat. It was fantastic. Oh, we also asked for a small order of the raved-about guacamole. It, too, was made fresh and very good...lots of avocado...not masked by sour cream. For dessert, we had the bread pudding with cream sauce for $1.99, as suggested. It melted in our mouths. This restaurant was described to us as "up-scale", and we were expecting to pay a lot more than we did for all we got to eat. The prices are quite reasonable, and our service was impeccable. We will definitely return.

My husband and I love this place! We have never had food here that wasn't great- some favorites of ours are the chicken quesadilla al horno, enchiladas, chicken medallions, and their guacamole is amazing! They have a really great trio of salsa too. We've gone here loads of times and always have had really great service. It's not cheap Mexican though, some of it is kind of pricey and their margaritas are just okay, but we still love this place! Definitely recommend it

This was the first time I have eaten here and cannot say enough good things! I usually don't leave places feeling like I had a great experience, but everything was perfect. I love salsa and there are different ones they bring to the table, all of them excellent. The chips are light and crispy instead of overly cooked greasy chips. The food came out on a hot dish which kept all of the food warm through the whole meal. Mi had a pork burrito with green chilies which was great! To top it off my server was very friendly and professional, one of the best servers I have had in a long time. Very good menu with lots of new types of dishes to try out. The traditionals are there too, but many new ones. Highly recommend!

I know it's not popular to frequent chain restaurants. My family and I keep an open mind when it comes to trying places out, but we usually stick to local independents as a rule. I have been to Abuelo's a number of times since I have moved to Knoxville, and the big reason for this is because the food is so darn good. They bring you three different salsas when you sit down to eat. They are fresh, made from scratch (as is everything else on the menu, bless them), and you can definitely taste the difference. I usually sit at the bar, where the service is attentive, and always friendly. The pork tacos and the enchiladas are always fantastic. I've even enjoyed a number of their pasta dishes, as well. As for some complaints I've read about Abuelo's not being an authentic Mexican restaurant - if fresh, delicious food and friendly, attentive service is not authentic, then so be it. They sure beat the hell out of that nasty Chuy's place I was poisoned at the other day!

  • Matt W.

Never again. We used to like Abuelo's. Decent food for a decent price. Until last night. I ordered the fajitas with steak and bacon-wrapped shrimp. It tasted good. 6 hours later, though, I immediately regretted that decision, as I made a mad dash for the bathroom before those fajitas came back up to haunt me. Well, they did anyways. Twice. Is it too much to ask to have a nice dinner out without a side dish of food poisoning?

I ate here while passing through K-ville, and I have to remark that the facility is very nice. It is in a newer area, so I assume it is new. It is nouveaux-hacienda, with a fake sky on the ceiling but still, a nice atmosphere. The food was just OK. I liked the tortilla soup and they did serve a hot salsa along with individual small bowls of regular salsa. The food is very generic and did not have much personality in the way of unique flavors, or even an overall theme, except that everything was Mexican. I was readying my camera to take an interior photo when the waitress rounded the column and sternly said to me "Don't take my picture!!". Now, I was not planning to take her picture, but that gruff first remark told me that she was not a big fan of giving good customer service, which was reinforced by further interactions between her and my friends. Meh, meh, meh. You can reasonably expect to experience better Mexican, even in Knoxville.

Really surprised by the negative reviews here. One of the best mexican restaurants in knoxville. I LOVE mexican food and have had mexican food everywhere from mexico to los angeles to new york, new mexico, texas and DC, and while abeulo's is not really authentic (its more like a tex-mex style) it is good. I will say that I do actually prefer tex-mex style to the true authentic mexican so maybe it's a matter of person preference. However everyone i've ever taken to abeulo's has had a good experience even those that had never had tex-mex before so I don't think its that far out. The only negative I can think of is that it's not the cheapest for mexican food, then again the better mexican places aren't usually. This is not one of the super cheap, super americanized mexican food places that are very common in east TN but that's a positive in my opinion.

  • Mary T.

This place was a huge disappointment. The margaritas = not very good. Maybe I should try the sangria next time. Oh wait, yeah I probably won't be going back. I asked our server what she enjoyed and she replied, "Oh I don't like Mexican food." I wanted to say, real smart dumbass working at a freaking Mexican restaurant, real smart. Whatever besides that I ordered a chimichanga and there were bones in the chicken that they neglected to pull out before they had wrapped it up for me to choke on, that's a lawsuit. Headlines would have read 'Young woman chokes to death on bone in chimichanga or was it the margarita? You decide.' Seriously I will never go back it was not worth it. Chips sucked. Salsa sucked. Cheese dip was terrible. What I wrote above about the food, yes it is true, it was bad! Don't try this place, go somewhere else.

How impressive is the interior of this place. They have put some serious thought into making Mexican food look fancy. Feels like you are dinning in an very upscale restaurant. However the food falls short of the decor and price. My food lacked taste and appeal on the plate. The texture felt like it had been microwaved. Items that should have been crispy were soggy. Portions for side items was very small. My beef was stringy and tough. Cheese was already cold but the plate was very hot. Not really sure how you pull that off. This is the same food a number of other local Mexican restaurants serve but at a much better price point and taste point. Over the last few months I have learned to skip the Turkey Creek. Maybe head downtown. The atmosphere is better. The restaurants are better. You'll be glad you did. And they have some amazing Mexican restaurants.

Abuelo's is not true Mexican but it is very good when the cooks want it to be. The enchiladas are good but I really like the bar menu before 7pm. The price is at least half of what it is on the regular menu and you get a proper amount of food, not the plate of food meant for a starving lion! The Nachos are my favorite and the cheese dip is very good as well. Abuelos can be a bad experience depending on the area and time of day, but my experiences at the Turtle Creek location has been consistently good.

Updated review - While my original comments (previous review linked below) from 04.23.12 still stand (that was a terrible experience) we have been back to Abuelos a number of times since then and things have improved. Service seems to be better and the kitchen speed/accuracy has improved overall. I really like some of their menu changes, bar specials, and the new salsa's. We did have one issue over the past few months relative to a take out order - called it in and was told 25 minutes. I showed up 20 minutes later (planning to wait 5) and ended up waiting 30 minutes (50 minutes total from order placement). I had some time, was patient, and actually didn't "make a fuss about it", I just had a drink at the bar. Even without saying anything the manager apologized and comped the food, so that was a nice gesture. Overall, this is a nice location and the food is good. I really like that they will take call ahead seating requests and I'm glad to see the restaurant improve over last year's experience.

I thought it was decent until a bartender ruined my experience. I'll never return. -It really wasn't that great. I'm a Soccer Taco diehard...and it's so much closer to home. And it feels like home when I'm there. I don't like to write bad reviews....but this is the truth without embellishment - a guest is always right...no matter what. I'm in it baby, I know. Cheers!

Three words: Mexican Cheesecake Factory. Looking back over the past year, I've eaten at a lot of restaurants in Knoxville. Definitely one a week. Most weeks, more. Why haven't I been back to Abeulo's since first moving here last August? I don't know. Nothing was terribly bad. On the flip side, nothing was terribly good either. This place is "meh" to the core. Reasons to go to Abuelos: You're having a mediocre wedding rehearsal dinner for a bunch of gringos and your father in-law refuses to eat anywhere that doesn't serve guacamole. Reasons to skip it in favor of Chez Guevara: Anything else. Where Mexican food is concerned, I have to go with either Soccer Taco or Chez Guevara for the win.

I had a very tasty and filling lunch here on a Sunday afternoon. We were seated by the manager and our server arrived at our table almost immediately to take our order for drinks and bring us chips and salsa. The chips were very thin, almost translucent, which actually suited the smooth salsa. The salsa was fairly mild. I liked that they brought a separate bowl of salsa for each of us. Before 3PM, they offer a number of lunch specials that include rice and beans and smaller portions of main dishes. Even the smaller lunch portion was pretty big. Free soda refills appeared on our table before we had even finished the drinks we already had. Is this authentic Mexican food? Umm, probably not. But the service was excellent and the food was flavorful and plentiful. We'll be back!

Unfortunately, I have been here twice. I am a fan of mexican food, and if you are too, forget this place. The dishes tasted like very bland tex-mex. Service was so so.

There are certainly worse faux-mexican places in Knoxville, but there's also no reason to go here for the food. chips were oily, and the salsa not fresh or spicy. We had fajitas and tacos along with guac as an appetizer. Quantity was plentiful but the guac bland and the fajitas nothing worth writing home about. Better fajitas can me found at Senior taco or soccer taco. I must have had the same server as Mary T because it took forever for us to get silverware, I never got a refill on my tea despite a couple of reminders. As for recommendations, all she told us was that the guac-ranch dip was "popular". I probably won't be going back.

Abuelo's is a Mexican food chain which originated in Texas. The food is a bit of Tex Mex, Coastal, and Old Mexico. I've eaten at Abuelo's in Oklahoma City, Austin, Dallas, and now Knoxville. As a rule, the food is great and so is the service. If you like drinks, they've got them but they are not one of those huge servers of Margaritas that neglects the food. Their sangria is hand-made and excellent, though. For those who like margaritas, I am told they are good. Try the Tilapia Veracruz and the soup of the day. You've got soups with everything from cilantro to posole. All good and different. This is some of the best, most consistent Mexican food around--and definitely a cut above a lot of the Knoxville offerings.

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque.
