Phil’s Dream Pit Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

Stopped here for lunch on a road trip from TN to VA. Pulled pork sandwich- smoky, tender chunks, moist but not mushy wet, intensely satisfying flavor of slow cooked, obsessively basted, carefully pulled pork. Sweet fire sauce- excellent depth, slow burn that blooms and then fades. Beans - cooked with pork, conjure visions of a campfire on the range. Service was quick, efficient, and extremely friendly. Tables inside were full (at 1:30 pm on a Wednesday!!), picnic tables outside were clean and very pleasant. So good we went back inside and bought 2 lbs to take home. They said they are on the web and that they ship. Easy access from route 81, about 1 mile via rt. 26.

Best pulled pork around this area hands down! Oh, and they have the fixin's to go with it. Best BBQ beans, also awesome Macaroni salad and Potato Salad. It's a small place but there is seating inside and out.

Great ribs and great customer service! My husband and I go there often and haven't been disappointed.

Great place for delicious BBQ. My family has never been disappointed with either food or service. I highly recommend giving the pork wings a try. One of the best things on the menu! Also loved Phil's Sweet Fire sauce!

4+ with potential to up-rate with subsequent visits... for the gagillion times i've driven through here on I-81 how did I not think to search out 'cue and stop in? DOHH! I picked up a "carry out meal" for "four" and i would say that it provided four very ample servings of pulled pork, cole slaw, potato salad, and baked beans. The sides were barbecue-joint-standard in concept but quite tasty, I don't really like frou-frou sides so these were pretty much exactly what we wanted. Phil's gives you a choice of about seven sauces. I asked for "vinegar" and one of the counter people asked if I wanted a second type as the vinegar "goes a long way". None of the others sounded very good to me (we've been over this before, I'm all about east-carolina vinegar sauce on chopped whole hog) so I went with the super hot. It was super hot. My bad. Like scorch your tastebuds hot, where food has no flavor, only heat. Silly me. I know better. Vinegar please, double it up. But she was very nice (the other counter person kind of gave me the quiet treatment - then talked over my shoulder to someone in line behind me... hmmm) and go-pack was ready to roll in about one minute - I was there at around 4pm on a Friday so it was pretty slow. We'll be dining in and/or carrying out again... watch this space for extended road test updates!

The ribs are (usually) worthy of a 4-star rating. They aren't entirely consistent and they close way too early to be convenient or good for dinner. But when the ribs are "on," and they usually are, they are great! The location is convenient off the Eastern Star exit on I-26, the ambiance is perfect for a BBQ joint, and between 6-7 PM you will have to wait in line to order. It's worth it. Sauces, beans, and slaw are all above average. Seems like it lives up to the story...a BBQ joint owned by a BBQ lover. Yes they cater. Very casual. Instead of cold beer, there are usually some cards with bible verses on the table. Hey, it's the South after all.

Good was great. Nice people. I thoroughly enjoyed the beef brisket sandwich as well as the hospitality. Phil was kind enough to offer a sample of his dry rub ribs which separated easily from the bone and tasted great. The variety of BBQ sauces was also much appreciated. I recommend the blackberry.

Don't get the brisket... It's sliced and super tough

Pretty tasty BBQ sauce and meat. Unfortunate that sandwiches are served on crappy hamburger buns. Very worthy of a quick stop for a $7 special

Love the pork platter with beans and Mac salad. Comes with drink for $8.99. Always delicious. Sweet fire is excellent!

In all fairness, I'm not huge BBQ fan in general. But for some reason I was craving it today, so my coworker and I checked it out. I ordered the 2 meat plate with turkey and beef brisket. I wanted chicken but apparently that doesn't count for the 2 meat plate. I ordered the hash brown casserole as a side and told them to "surprise me" with my second side since I didn't want beans and everything else is mayo based. The girls picked macaroni salad for my second side. You get a generous portion of meat (4oz of each), but I was disappointed because it was cold. The sides were good, nothing spectacular but not flavorless. I did like the fact that they had 5 sauces to choose from. My favorite was the "sweet fire" as it was sweet with a little bit of smokey flavor as well as spice. My coworker got the pulled pork dinner, which was also a large serving of meat. He liked both the beans and the hash brown casserole too. We also each had a white chocolate macadamia nut cookie, which were only $.50! Atmosphere is pretty much what you would expect a hole-in-the-wall Tennessee BBQ joint to be. Cute, mismatched, not fancy. Service was super friendly and helpful!!

Be sure to get sauce! Great bbq, but I will likely try another joint when I am in the area again. I am not leaving hungry, but it needed a crutch. I had the ribs and the pork, beans and chips. Ribs I got dry (wet was an option), pork was just pulled. I could see a great smoke ring in the ribs, and a different rub than I am used to. Pork had a nice color, with definite evidence of a good helping of smoke. I was hoping for a more aggressive taste in the meat, but it was just "eh". The sauce made it much better, but I had wanted dry ribs that didn't NEED sauce. Great ambiance, line out the door too. I will probably try something else in the area next time. This was supposed to be "best in Kingsport", but I hope that isn't the case.

Food was great! Get the dry rips or the pulled pork sandwich!! You may get a few stares from the locals since they may not be used to out of towner's, but food was worth it!

What great BBQ!! Incredibly quick service and food that is outstanding!!! Good Christian people to who run a great little restaurant. If you live in TRICITIES or traveling through on I-81, it's worth the stop!!!!!

Found this place driving along rt.81. Great spot for a quick bite. Staff was super nice. Pulled pork was great and blackberry sauce was very tasty. Brisket was good, nice and smoked flavor. Only thing we didn't like was the brisket was sliced and tough to chew. Would be better if pulled like the pork. Overall worth the stop.

We visit area for a month every year from Tucson, AZ, and try all BBQ in the area. First time here and will definitely be in regular dining rotation. Best beans and slaw bar none, but sauces were only good, not great. Service was terrific and great people. Loved the atmosphere and Tootsie Pops for kids was great touch

Phil's was yummy! We purchased the dinner for 4 (a to go deal) with pulled pork and 3 sides. The meat and sauces (blackberry was my favorite) were very good. The sides all tasted homemade and we enjoyed them (coleslaw, baked beans, potato salad). We also tried the brisket...oh yeah, it was GOOD. The staff and owners were very friendly.

Great bbq and nice folks here! We both had the standard pulled pork sandwiches and they did not disappoint. Classic southern bbq at its best.

  • Bill L.

Dry ribs and sweet ribs are really good. The beans are special. Even the coleslaw Is great. It's a quick stop off rt 81 and while it is not fancy, it will will not disappoint. The staff was extremely friendly and even gave us a sample of their smoked pig wing, which was awesome. .

Good food and great service. The beans and slaw were excellent. Get the mustard sauce, the other sauces are good but this one is great!!!

The dry rub ribs at Phil's are the best around. who needs sides with these ribs. His BBQ used to be chopped but when he switched to a pulled pork I found it to be so much better. I like to taste the smoke in my BBQ and Phil gives you just the right amount. I like that the place is small because it keeps the service and food at top quality. The sides are okay but again I go here for the protein not the side dishes. I only gave four stars because I think the hours are lacking. They close at 7 in the summer and 6 I think in the winter. You have to rush to get it if you are going after work.

Don't even dare to second guess your decision to stop here, no but really. This is the best hidden gem on rt 81!! We walked in and had no idea what to order. Usually when you ask someone, "what's the best here? What should I order?" people get annoyed or anxious and want you to hurry up. Well, we got the best response. Bill, who was our server and also later learned was co-owner and manager, helped us through our difficult decision of what to order. We narrowed it down to the 2 meat combo: pork and ribs, 2 sides and a drink for $12.99. We sat down at the picnic tables outside and a young gentleman brought out our delicious BBQ. It looked PHENOMENAL! They also served us some extra ribs and a "pork wing". The pulled pork was great, but it wasn't my favorite. It was slightly dry but with some good sauce, it tasted delicious. It was definitely above average and the best you'd find in the area. The ribs were amazing. Perfectly cooked, tender, and my favorite. We had our ribs dry style without sauce, and it was perfectly seasoned. The "pork wing". This is actually the lower leg section, or the forearm or calf. Again, DELICIOUS!! This cut of meat is extremely lean. Kyle thought the texture and moisture was perfect. I thought it was slightly dry, but then again, with a lean meat, you don't want to overlook it then become mushy. You could taste the hickory smokey flavor in the meat, which was my favorite thing about it. It was an unbelievable natural flavor. The sauces were fun to try as well. We particularly enjoyed the sweet fire and the blackberry sauce. All the sauces were homemade and exceptional. The blackberry sauce was sweet, but also slightly tart- just the perfect combination. We ended up purchasing a pint of the sauce, which Bill had just poured into a mason jar. Talk about Southern! We were debating to buy a rack of ribs to bring home, but it wouldn't have lasted the 6 hour drive. Bill was so kind to let us try a slice of brisket, and OMFG it was so tasty, tender, flavorful, juicy, melt-in-your-mouth perfect. We left a little upset that we didn't order a full portion, but at least we'll stop again the next time we are down this way. This BBQ place was such a treat. The staff was so pleasant, nice, and helpful. So, do yourself a favor, stop and get some amazing BBQ and you won't regret it.

It's probably an insult to the people of the good south for a Jersey boy to write a review on this place, but after eating here there is nothing stopped me. Although I am a Jersey boy at heart, I have had my fair share of southern bbq and I have to say Phil's Dream Pit is pretty top notch. My pulled pork sandwich was extremely smokey and tender. Did I mention it was prepared in less than two minutes? I don't care if you call this fast food or not but the quality of the bbq here is indisputable. Part of the amazing experience was sampling a gallon sweet tea ($3.50). Cheap, but more importantly absolutely delicious. Screw Coca-Cola, if you're gonna drink the calories, do it with some delicious sweet tea. Each picnic table inside Phil's is lined with a variety of delicious bbq sauces. One of the most exciting parts of my meal was tasting each individual bbq sauce with a beautiful chunk of pulled pork. On my next road trip to North Carolina, there is no way im bypassing Phil's. This is not your everyday bbq stop. BBQ at it's best.

This was the first time that I went there, and it was kind of a mysterious chance of fate. I went there to meet someone else, as I had gotten a rideshare to Asheville. The most important fact though, was that it WAS DELICIOUS. I had gone there very close to the closing time, and not only did they invite us in, but they fed us without hesitation. Not only because they felt that they were doing the right thing, but because they felt that it was in the interest of the owner, who would have acted exactly the same way. The service was wonderful, the food was GREAT (one of the top BBQ sandwiches I've ever had), and the banter was even better. They really made an effort to make things the best the as possible. Additionally I am very excited that they will be sold in Walgreens. But most importantly they had WONDERFUL service and DELICIOUS food. I would go time and time again if I lived near Jackson City.

Phil's Dream Pit is my favorite BBQ in the Tri-Cities region, hands down. The blackberry sauce is tasty, tangy and a little bit spicy. The toast is a guilty pleasure - so chewy and buttery. Just wish this place was open on Mondays!

  • Norka R.

Definitely worth it. 3 minutes from I 40, clean, family friendly. Served within 1 minute. The owner was helpful and gracious, so so good Five kinds of homemade BBQ sauce, each delicious. Our favorite? Hands down the dry rub ribs with blackberry sauce with a dab of the vinegar base. Pulled pork was tender and cooked to perfection without a hint of stringiness

Great small atmosphere. Friendly, and welcoming. Tasty smoke on the brisket, vinegar sauce available at table side is grade A! The potato salad is homemade and made with love! The beans are beautiful. Highly satisfied and recommended!

Nestled in a warehouse area, I had to call them to get directions. Once I found it, I stumbled inside to a musical and friendly energy. I hadn't made up my mind yet but was standing at the counter for a minute- and they thought they had kept me waiting. Ran out so friendly, apologizing- but I was eons away from deciding. I'm a barbeque maniac. I ordered their ribs and the pulled pork, with a side of beans and greens. I am a hater. I immediately judge. I sit there and pull stuff apart. From the quality of the cuts of meat, to the rubs, to the sauces- This is in my top three favorite barbeque spots in the COUNTRY. The flavor was absolutely unbelievable- every single sauce was quintessential. THE sweet bbq, THE vinegar bbq- all so authentic and true to region/origin. Their blackberry bbq sauce was a shift from my usual, and I ended up putting it on everything. Note to vegetarians: 1. Why are you eating here? 2. There is meat in EVERYTHING. The beans are full of pulled meats and they are mind blowing. Still- be conscious of that if need be. On top of having the best bbq, with the best cuts of quality meat and the best sauces- The owners are hilarious. All friends/family- I watched as they laughed it up with locals and their friends- There's a huge photo of them on the wall all dressed in Tye-dye being silly. I immediately loved them. Wonderful, wonderful people. Worth supporting even if their barbeque wasn't some of the best on the planet- but thank goodness it is.

Honey, stop the car! You need to try this place and the pig wings. They are Tender, moist and smoky. As a mini pig owner I felt guilty eating it so I only had 2... Good variety of sauces, flavorful baked beans. Very friendly staff, eat outside on picnic tables or inside. Good parking.

This was recommended to me by business colleagues in the area as the best barbecue place to go to. They were spot on. Plenty generous servings for lunch as I had the pulled pork, baked beans and potato salad. I will start my diet tomorrow! 1-22-2015 update: We went back for lunch and they did not disappoint! I had the three rib special with baked beans (favorite side thus far) and cole slaw. Just enough for lunch. Fantastic. They had tarp around the front porch and radiant heaters do the picnic tables were great.

In town on business and locals recommended this place. Just a really nice friendly, family-run joint with great food at great prices. Had the brisket plate and finished it off with banana pudding. If I am ever in the Kingsport, TN area again I will be back.

Me: I would like the brisket and the pulled pork and some ribs. I don't want any sides. Guy at the grill who I've decided was Phil: No sides? Me: No thank you. Phil: Well... give him more meat then. 5 stars.

Pork ribs were ok for small town BBQ. Brisket, not so much. I guess I am just spoiled by Texas BBQ. I'll give it to them though, the beans are pretty amazing.

5 stars.

Food was great! Get the dry rips or the pulled pork sandwich!! You may get a few stares from the locals since they may not be used to out of towner's, but food was worth it!

Great little hidden treasure. It's a local favorite and brisket & pork wings are the best around.

Great place for delicious BBQ. My family has never been disappointed with either food or service. I highly recommend giving the pork wings a try. One of the best things on the menu! Also loved Phil's Sweet Fire sauce!

Pretty tasty BBQ sauce and meat. Unfortunate that sandwiches are served on crappy hamburger buns. Very worthy of a quick stop for a $7 special

Best pulled pork around this area hands down! Oh, and they have the fixin's to go with it. Best BBQ beans, also awesome Macaroni salad and Potato Salad. It's a small place but there is seating inside and out.

Dry ribs and sweet ribs are really good. The beans are special. Even the coleslaw Is great. It's a quick stop off rt 81 and while it is not fancy, it will will not disappoint. The staff was extremely friendly and even gave us a sample of their smoked pig wing, which was awesome. .
