Holy smokes real Italian in jones borough tn. Who knew? Gotta say best Italian Food I've had since I moved here from Philadelphia. Garlic knots stuffed with mozzarella were amazing. I had shrimp and chicken in spicy blush sauce with penne. So good. Penne wasn't mushy gooey stuff so often served down here. She had chicken Marsala full of mushrooms and a rich gravy. Salad came topped with fresh shredded mazarella instead of sprinkles of canned cheese. For dessert was the most amazing tiramisu ever had. Light and not overpowering with coffee. Gotta say it's an 80 mile drive from where I live but I definitely plan on making the driv

I was testifying in the Jonesborough courthouse, and we only had 50 minutes for lunch. The Black Olive was close, and the menu, which I had read at the Americinn Hotel, looked pretty good. We sat down and were promptly served. I choose the bow tie pasta with chicken and a white sauce. Really amazing luncheon entree. The sauce was some of the best I have had in the United States and in Italy. Just the right mixture of garlic and cream. The pasta was amazingly al dente. Considering this was a luncheon special, it was spectacular. The serving sizes are huge. I could only finish 1/2. I only had time for the $6.99 luncheon entree, so I cannot comment on other dishes, nor their evening fare. However, based upon this experience I would expect the evening fare to be equally spectacular

I had the lunch lasagna and let me just tell you that the lasagna is worth a trip to Jonesborough! Caesar salad is OK. It's kinda smallish and the croutons are those tiny store-bought ones today. Not a $2.99 Caesar. But, wait! There's more! BYOB wine. Great, free, fast, ample WIFI. The seating situation isn't great...one room is big and open with booths and tables/chairs. The smaller room is a little better for me; cozier that is. But not intimate or private., Maybe it's better at night with the lights dimmed. Cool old couple next to me joked that she was going to start bringing a cushion for him since he chose the padded bench instead of a wood chair. Today, I shit you not, Jerry Springer was on the TV. At least it wasn't biased political news and the sound was off, so the '60s music was enjoyable instead. Turn the lights down, put on some Frank or Deano, bring a bottle of red...this has potential. The neighbors tell me the proprietor also has a restaurant in Elizabethton, TN. This is, so far, unconfirmed. Wait....server confirms...Primo's. The patio looks promising.

First timer. The food was a four star all the way. The service (unfortunately) offset the goodness of the meal. The staff was courteous and friendly, but enthusiasm does not overcome basic shortfalls. The appetizer was late and served without a dipping sauce. Not a problem until we mentioned it and met with some silly excuse and ultimately had a couple of plastic containers chucked on the table. The salads came with the late appetizer. Again, no problem until the food shows up right away and is plopped down regardless of being finished with the salads. The main dishes were fine but once again we were asked how everything was a microsecond after being served. One refill offer on drinks and gone. When asked about the bill, split or one, we replied one and then after the waitress made a trip to the front, came back without our bill and told we could "cash out at the front"? When we approached the cashier she had a hard time finding our ticket, announced what we owed and seemed taken back when I asked to review the bill. All was correct but I like to know before forking over my card on demand. Go back? Sure. Just hope the staff comes up to speed. They have plenty of people they just need to learn a few of the basics.

We've been to the Black Olive twice and will definitely return. Their Calamari is good as was the Gyro sandwich . I also thought the Chicken Stromboli was exceptionally tasty and plentiful. As mentioned by others, service could be better, but it was okay. Highly recommend for fresh Italian and Greek food.

Black Olive is my favorite stop for dinner. Their food is always excellent, and their servers are efficient and friendly. Be sure to try the garlic knots!

Friendly people and huge portions, but the food was fairly average as was the atmosphere. The prices are reasonable considering the amount of food.

We grabbed Carry-out from here and although the price and the quantity of what we got was great, the taste of the food left much to be desired. It is not the worst Italian Food I have eaten, but surely could use a bit more finesse and seasoning in the kitchen. I would like to state that the interior decor is quite nice and welcoming although if we go back I will ask to be seated in the room to the left of entry as the other room is too "Cafeteria" for me. I give this place a "C" based on the Carry-Out order and will probably rate it again when/if we go back for a sit-down meal.

Great food and prices!!! The service was excellent and friendly. I recommend that you try this restaurant for a wonderful Italian experience!!! My wife had the Chicken Bowtie and I had a large calizone. Both were flavorful and more than filling. We took a large cheese pizza home and it disappeared quickly!!! Wonderful handmade crust in the calizone and breads...melts in your mouth...I am anxious to get back again soon!!!

This place was fantastic. The food was awesome, it looked great, and it is Jonesborough (which just makes everything better). My waiter was very helpful when I asked her questions about the menu, but the service overall was pretty slow. I had to wait to be seated, not because there were no tables, but because it just took them that long to seat people. The food came out slow, and my check was very late. But I do know that stuff like that can only get better. The important part is the food, and it was well above par.

First time visit, I ordered carry out and the food was delicious. I had to wait a few extra minutes but I wasn't upset about it. However, there may have been a little confusion about what I had ordered, but the manager went above and beyond to keep me a happy customer. I am grateful and will certainly return! Only thing I would change is the atmosphere is a little casual... Not a bad thing, but the lights could be dimmer for such a nice place and the outdoor channel was on, which was strange.

This review is being written after my second trip to the Black Olive. My first trip here, the service was a little slow but the food was incredible. I'm happy to say the food was still incredible and the service is actually getting better. If you were looking for great Italian, forget about Johnson City, come to Jonesborough.

First time eating here and it will be the last. No complaints about the service or anything else about the visit except the FOOD WAS TERRIBLE. I ordered chicken Gorgonzola pasta and I would have bet money on the fact there was no Gorgonzola cheese in that sauce. It was basically a tasteless version of chicken Alfredo. And the chicken itself was a major disappointment. It was about 5 or 6 pieces of very thinly sliced meat that looked like it belonged on a philly style sandwich. I don't think there was a total of 1/2 chicken breast on that dish. My husband ordered veal Marsala and it was gross. The veal itself was extremely tough, sinewy and he said it tasted more like a poorly breaded thin pork chop than veal. And the Marsala sauce was so sweet it tasted like there was syrup in it. Last but not least, the bread they serve is nothing more than a white sub bun with garlic butter and seasonings. We were completely disappointed and left there hungry after paying $40 for dinner.

My girl friend and I tried the Black Olive because of a friends recommendation. We were not disappointed. Both the food an service were outstanding. I had the pene with clams and shrimp in a white sauce and my friend had the Brooklyn Bridge pizza. Both were delicious. Then, we shared the Tiramisu for dessert. We will certainly be repeat customers.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
