RAPHAEL'S ITALIAN [405 Main Avenue South - yes, I too was surprised it's not "Main Street"; (931) 438-3337]. Here is another food option, settled in as it were on the grave of a former Dairy Queen. Now, we're not talking The Hill here, nor even any number of Little Italies scattered across the land like Captain McCluskey in the Luna Azure, but it's a pleasant place for a nice meal with the little ones or your pals or your club members, bearing or sans red chapeaus. Interestingly, there's a hint of the Arabic or Greek in the dishes - Chef Ink and I could swear we tasted that Grecian hint of cinnamon in the tomato sauce. The novelty and the hearty portions, which are the rule, are offered at a price that pleases pocketbooks and woos wallets. I ran into a ghost from my past, Harold Student, brother of the infamous Warden Bettinna, and he looked as satisfied as the rest of us did. No frills, but clean and cozy. Raphael's, not Harold.

Lots of items on the menu. I do not like the tomato sauce here. It tastes like they add nutmeg or something similar....I grew up in an Italian nbhd in NJ and know what real Italian food is supposed to taste like.

Went to Raphael's last night and dined in. We ordered a large pepperoni pizza, it's what we usually get when we go to Raphael's. The pizza served here reminds me of "Greek-style" pizza that we use to consume back in CT. Somewhat doughy, a bit greasy, but very tasty. I'm sure some people wouldn't like this type of pizza, but we feel it's the best in Fayetteville (which isn't a great endorsement, the pizza competition is very limited, and not very good at all). We have ordered off the menu in the past -- chicken parmigiana to be exact. It was frozen chicken fingers with tomato sauce and cheese plopped on top. Awful. My suggestion is to stick with the pizza. Also, this place never seems busy, even on a Friday or Saturday night. Think they do more delivery service then dining in. So eating in the restaurant is a pleasant experience, nice & quiet, just the way I like it.

The calzone was tasty. It is too bad they do not deliver because Dominos and Pizza Hut could use some competition.

This is a nice change from the usual choices in small towns. We had the veal parmesan and canneloni. The portions were large and the meat sauce had a cinnamon flavor that was unusual. The prices are low and the interior is outdated but I found it charming. They give you a huge side of buttery garlic bread that's good.

Generic Italian dishes but it's okay to eat. Service is usually quick and friendly. It's not a place on my favorites but it gets the job done if you're hungry and don't want to splurge. The cheesecake is really yummy. The pizzas are good as long as they don't sweat in the box. They are very greasy so go easy. There is a drive thru window for picking up takeout so you don't have to get out of the vehicle. The service and convenience of this place is the reason for the fourth star, not the food.

Ok so... I was hungry and all the restaurants on the "strip" were fast food, Mexican or other choices that did not seem to fit what I was looking for. Hunger eventually took over though, and I pulled into Raphael's. After pulling in and getting out of the car, I realized it was an Italian restaurant in an old fast food building. I confess to not being really thrilled about this, but like I said, I was hungry. I walked in and the atmosphere was not really welcoming. Not sure what I was really expecting, but this was certainly not it. Anyway, I go stand at the counter where a little girl (and I say little because she was tiny, not because she was young...) ignored me for a few minutes before finally coming to take my order. I placed my order for the Greek Chicken Plate and she hurriedly totals it up and hands me my number. Not the friendliest service, but we are in a "fast food" joint. I wait at the table and thought I heard my number. I got up to go get it and it was not sitting on the pickup counter. I look up and it's sitting under the heat lamp. They called me up, at least my food could be here... Anyway, they finally get me my food and then the completely unexpected happens... It's FANTASTIC!!! The Chicken breast is at least half a pound and is sitting on top of a bed of fluffy yellow rice with bits of carrot. It was seasoned perfectly and was DELICIOUS! The included salad was fresh and crisp and included a full slice of red onion, about 1/8th of a green bell pepper, a pepperoncini, black olive and tomato. The Italian dressing was standard fare, but tasty. The breadsticks were good, but nothing special. But the marinara they give you to dip in was WONDERFUL!!! If this is their pizza sauce I HAVE to go back to try the pizza. Service and atmosphere, 2-3. Food, 4-5. I'll give them another try when I come back. Maybe the staff was just too busy then. (They seem to do a brisk take-out business.)

Service was not up to par. The pizza was pretty good but I've had better. The Cheese breadsticks were ok,not enough flavor. The guy who took my order over the phone was not helpful and sounded like I bothered him..really? Also to note.. If you order the 5.99 1-topping special (Large), they will not let you add toppings.. I do not understand that..I wanted green olives on half even though id pay for a full pies worth of toppings and they still said I wasn't allowed to add toppings.. bad business move if u ask me..Especially since they are right next door to Dominos..retarded anyway Peace Love & Chicken Grease!!

Great value! The service was good. I enjoyed my salad and calzone. The atmosphere is dated.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
