Best southern buffet in the area. Their parking lot is always full and people come from miles around just to eat here. They have a delicious variety of southern fixings but you MUST try their Butter Roll! It's to die for!!

Good southern food...the catfish was crispy and not greasy......good old fashioned collards, black eye peas, green beans and corn bread. The buffet items vary depending on what is coming out of the oven and the hot steam is enough to get your saliva glands going. It is a simple open seating arrangement and make sure you wear your stretchy pants before you go to this buffet. They could use a little more wait staff or less patrons, but I would say the extra wait staff would be preferential for Marvin's :-) Everyone there has a smile and a warm greeting for everyone !!

The place locals love to Pig Out at on a Friday or Saturday night in Fayetteville (Marvin's does get super-packed on the weekends). It's basically a typical Southern buffet, although it does offer frog legs. Ummm, do frog legs taste like chicken ? Well, sorta. Yeah, it's white meat like chicken, but it has a muscle-like texture and a fishy odor to it. My suggestion, if you want chicken just eat chicken, because fried chicken in the Deep South is excellent. Frog legs, not so much.

My friend Tommy and I were riding in southern Tennessee and were looking for a cafe we'd enjoyed before. It was out of business and a few minutes later we stumbled on Marvin's. It's a cavern inside and looks like a lot of tour buses going to Jack Daniels might stop there. The service was very friendly and the buffet was well stocked. I had fried chicken, pork chops, greens and new potatoes. The chicken was cooked perfectly with a great crust; the pork chops were large, moist and very tasty, greens were seasoned properly and the new potatoes excellent. Went back for more and loved it again. Tommy had a dessert called a butter roll whose name does it no justice. It is outrageously good and I will be back as often as I'm in the area.

New owners, same people as Shoney's, run out of the good food items advertised frequently and then replace with something else. Some of the waitresses are great but some are too old and seem almost senile (or incredibly rude). Also only 5 and under are charged for children's buffet. Because all 6-10 year old eat like grown men. That's right 6 years and up are charged ADULT price. Closed on Sundays. Small parking spaces.

I gotta remember to trust my uncle's judgement since he was the one that brough us here to one of his favorite restaurants around his home. This is a good example of not judging a book by it's cover, because I tell you I was ready to leave before my feet even set foot inside the building. I don't know something about it just gave me creepy vibes, kinda like when watching a horror movie and they step into a place in the middle of nowhere and 10 mins later things get crazy. After shaking off my hesitation we take a seat when I soon realize we were in good hands seeing that my uncle actually knew most of the people working there including the cook. We get some catfish fried to perfection and everything was good on the buffet side which included fried chicken, Mac and cheese green beans, etc. I think the highlight of the night was when I was introduced to the Butter Roll. This amazing dessert at first glance reminds you a little of bread pudding. When i bit in, the warm gooey vanilla knocked me out! Marvin's is a case of not judging a book by its cover. Don't let the decor trick you, all the food is packing quite a punch...quintessential southern comfort food done right.

Food was eh. From the reviews I was anticipating really good fried chicken. It was super dry and over fried as were all of the fried items. The cornbread was equally as dry. Green beans and Mac n cheese were okay. Service was great!

If you love Southern comfort food, you will loooove this place. There are 3 or 4 rows of buffet tables, with catfish to macaroni to frog legs to crawfish and peach cobbler. There's even self serve soft serve ice cream! When you walk in and have not become a regular face there, you will be led to a seat, otherwise, sit where ever you want. It's not in a part of town where only locals would be aware of, but right on the main strip of highway, which is convenient if you're passing through. However, for somewhere on the main thoroughfare that's easy for travelers to get to, there sure aren't enough bathrooms to compensate. Not sure on the men's restroom, but in the women's there are only two stalls, and long lines. This is why I took away a star. Other than that, the staff is friendly and helpful, right down to the people restocking the food in between hungry patrons. The walls have a mural of the town hand painted along the entirety of the place, and the seating is well spaced so you aren't bumping into people, and well kept. And as there are about 3(I can't remember if it's 3 or 4) double sided buffet tables, the wait for food is definitely not as long as the bathrooms. The food itself is delicious. I had creamed corn, fried okra, catfish, fried shrimp, boiled shrimp, hushpuppies, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. Now, if you want to try several different things like I did, you will have to get a second plate, because the plates are small for a buffet. And if you're not okay with your food mixing, forget about it. Also, their home made tartar sauce is awesome on the catfish too. I really enjoyed everything I tried, and even went back for extra mac and cheese. The next time we go through Fayetteville, this will definitely be a required stop.

Marvin's is the kind of place you see on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Nothing fancy but good hardy all you can stuff down southern cuisine. I eat here frequently when working in the area. They have great fried chicken and fried catfish, usually two or three types of beans, excellent creamed corn made from young corn, and of course fried okra, crispy on the outside, warm and smooth on the inside. I am not big on desserts, but others tell me that the butter bread and chocolate cake are delicious. No fancy decor, they have advertisements for local businesses as elements of a huge mural on the walls, but fun in it's own way. My only caveat is that the food will almost certainly raise your cholesterol, and probably your blood pressure. Proceed with caution, but do proceed.

MARVIN'S FAMILY RESTAURANT [4130 Thornton Taylor Parkway (THE BYPASS); (931) 433-3101] is already a hangout for many out-of-towners, so you can imagine just how much the locals fill it up during rush hours. Again, we're not talking fancy food here, but an old, hometown southern buffet. The price is reasonable (there's a little markup on Saturdays, when they serve frog legs, but it's well worth it) and the offerings are plenty. Now, if you're tired of the trough mentality, that's understandable, but I prefer this over similar establishments in the area - particularly some of the overdone chains. It won't make Zagat...maybe the Lonely Planet...but it's pleasant and the turnover resulting from its teeming clientele keeps things hot and fresh. Great greens, delicious fish, kicking frog legs, and more will keep you coming back. It's THE place to crumble up your Cornbread and cover it in pot liquor and Pintos before mashing it all together. For desserts, however, I'd head to Shoney's. One exception, however: the Butter Roll (there's a picture). But everybody knows this...and the moment it hits the bar, the vultures are already landing on it. Be vigilant! They did score a point for working with local groups. I've seen school groups here and once, when we had a great turnout at a funeral, Higgins Funeral Home saw to it that Marvin's was contacted to accommodate us with extra fixin's... Their waitresses are friendly and attentive and succeed well, given the tons of people who come here. We always have a drive and they readily fix us up with to-go cups. Two notes: On Wednesdays, you get a Senior Discount...once you hit FIFTY! Huzzah! Save some cash on an already reasonable price. On the other hand, they need to pull back on the salt, so people CAN hit fifty. Sometimes it's fine; other times, eating a gizzard or certain veggies here is like French-kissing Lot's wife. They are closed on Sundays. They used to be open, but after their competition down the road had to shut down their Sunday buffet, Marvin's closed, too. That, the salt worship, and certain sub-par desserts are why they don't get four stars.

Ruby is my favorite waitress and I always hope to sit in her sections, the others are wonderful too, but she stands out. Great food, great environment and I loved going there :)

This place has a great selection of traditional southern cuisine, and the crowds stand as a testament to the excellence of this restaurant. The service was prompt, courteous, and accommodating. The food seems to disappear off the buffet as quickly as its placed there by eager customers. Great place with a great atmosphere.
