You'd never expect Mexican cuisine like this so far from the border! Came to TN for business. Been to many places that claimed to be "authentic" - Los Portales is the real deal. I had the Taco Salad lunch special - also added the $0.99 taco for Taco Tuesday. The beef was savory and DELICIOUS. Served with a generous portion of sour cream and guacamole, the taco salad shell was one of the best I've ever had. If you're looking for great Mexican food at an even greater price, this is the spot!

An underwhelming "meh" ... I ended up here because my first 3 choices were closed fo Labor Day. So, a positive for being open! Gentleman manning the register and acting host was ...shall we say, lukewarm to be generous? Another positive - the waitress was generally attentive and cheery... but disappeared after food and drinks served - never saw her again....did something happen to her? Steak fajitas... Beef was good, but - you're kidding, right? - only TWO tortillas! Yup, that's all folks. Chips / salsa ... Cheap and tasted that the way. Minuscule portion of guac and sour cream... Out of the can retried beans that were paste ... Rice was dry. At least the beer was cheap and cold

We were traveling in the area and looked for a place to eat lunch when we saw Los Portales off to the side of an outdated shopping center. There's not much to choose from around here so we thought we'd give it a try. Sure glad we did. My wife and I both ordered the lunch size chicken fajitas. Served crackling hot on an iron plate with rice, beans, sour cream and guacamole. It was all we could do to finish. We were stuffed. This place is not your typical tex-mex, it's really good. You can usually tell a good Mexican place if they have a spanish station on the TV and this one did. Don't know if we'll ever be back in this area but, if you are and you like Mexican give this a try.

My favorite mexican restaurant. I usually phone my order in advance and just go in to pick it up. They always get it right and the food is always good.

You cannot get Mexican food like this anywhere else in the country. Believe me -- I have tried! Get the cheese dip. You will love it!

Had the lunch fajitas (combo of chicken and steak) which comes with rice and beans, guacamole, and sour cream. Told them to hold the sour cream and guacamole as I don't like them. Would hate to see the dinner portions as the lunch was enough for me. Also great margaritas. Give this place a try.

Excellent service!! The servers keep coming to your table and refilling your baskets with chips. The salsa is very good. My only issue is that when the plates come to the table, they are very hot. The salsa and chips are a welcomed appetizer and are very tasty.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
