Stan's looks like a typical truck stop, just off of I-65, South of Nashville. We stumbled upon it on a quest to eat something other than fast food during one of my family's 12 hour drives from Indiana to Florida. Imagine our surprise when what we really found was a restaurant that specialized in curing their own meats! Their ham is amazing. I like the club sandwich because you get their cured ham along with their delicious bacon. This isn't a lunch meat sandwich. It's delicious and fresh and a great way to take a break during a long drive. The waitstaff is friendly and sweet and very southern - all wonderful things.

Nothing to write home about for the interior but the service was excellent, staff was friendly and the food was good. The catfish fillets were very light with the cornmeal breaking, tasty hush puppies and the coleslaw was just the way I like it BBQ Pit platter was good as well but the catfish stole the show.

Well it's a locally owned restaurant and fuel stop. Food isn't bad, breakfast good. Friendly service too. However almost impossible to get gas or move your car in front of the restaurant. Yankees may find the food lacking and the place a little scivey. Restrooms are usually lacking and dirty. Personally I get a kick out of the place.

I was wanting fried catfish and so tired of places that serve Asian catfish instead. This was indeed whole American catfish and fried perfectly. It just didn't have any seasoning to it and the bottom side was quite greasy. The white beans however were wonderful! My fried okra was cold and chewy and my cornbread was cold. My waitress was very friendly and attentive to my needs. Everyone else seemed to be enjoying their meals, so maybe I should have tried something else. Wednesday night is All You Can Eat frog legs. If I go back, I'll try that (I usually give a place a second shot unless it is really bad).

Good food, fast service, easy parking for travel trailers, shopping and reasonable prices! We stopped mainly because it was right off Hwy 65, had enough room to pull in with our 26' travel trailer and their signs claimed to have home cooked meals. We stopped in at 10am on a Sunday and they were 1/2 full. We were greeted & able to sit right away. They had many great options & we could order breakfast, lunch or dinner. I had baked ham, mash potatoes, baked apples, biscuits and un-sweeten tea. They had a huge choice of jams, honey, butter & even apple-butter on the table. I enjoyed the taste of everything but the ham was my favorite. The portions are big I ended up taking 1/2 my plate to go. I love it when your able to make two meals outta one! My fiancé had 2 sunny-side eggs, 2 biscuits, fried ham, gravy & coffee. He liked his a lot too except we both liked my ham better, because his was fried making it drier & salty. Our total came to $21.42 and we were out of there in about 45 minutes. The only thing I didn't care for was the smell in the ladies room cause it was pretty bad. My tip would be skip the restroom or go after eating. It didn't look dirty, it just smelled bad. "Maybe it was just bad timing?" We WILL stop again if ever in the area.

Had breakfast at 6:30 PM... It was great but the one thing that topped it off...a Killians Red! How can you beat that?

This little hole in the wall restaurant/gas station has probably the best breakfast I have ever had. The menu kind of resembles that of a cracker barrel. The gas station/shop has an interesting selection of stuff to look at. I took off a star due to the service. The service was lacking and slow. Otherwise I would recommend.

We stayed at a hotel in Columbia, so I asked the desk clerk for a recommendation for a local place to eat, particularly one where my boss could find fairly bland American food. She pointed us to Stan's Country Restaurant just across the street, and said we were in luck, because that night's special was All You Can Eat Frog Legs for $9.99. Stan's is a lot like a Cracker Barrel in that, in addition to the restaurant, there is a country store and gift shop. Evidently it's been around since 1947, which is pretty cool. My boss, a coworker, and I sat down to eat with high expectations. My coworker ordered fish and chips and liked his just fine. My boss ordered pork chops and also liked his. Like many Southern restaurants featuring homestyle cooking, Stan's offers a selection of breads, including fried cornbread. My boss asked for some honey to go with his, and I did the same. It was delicious. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to order the special. Frog Legs aren't my favorite food in the world, but I figured they would be fun to write about, and when I sent my wife an iMessage saying I'd be getting them, her response of "Ewww" was all I needed to seal the deal. The special came with fries (no substitutions) and choice of two sides. I selected green beans and cole slaw. Let me say the cole slaw was not especially to my liking, but I'm a fan of sweeter slaw, and this was not very sweet, so others may like it just fine. The fries were OK, but I wasn't in the mood for carb overload, so I only tried a few. The green beans were quite good, if a bit bland. That's my most common complaint about Southern/American food - sometimes there isn't a ton of flavor. But I know what you're waiting to read - how were the frog legs? Well, they were frog legs. If you've never had frog legs, you're probably wondering - do they really taste like chicken? In a way. They certainly are somewhat similar to chicken in texture, especially the meat on a chicken wing. I would say if most people were blind-folded and handed some fried frog legs to eat, many would assume they were eating chicken. But were they good? I guess. I'm honest enough to admit I ordered them to be able to say I ordered them and to write about them, but I won't claim they were so good I'd order them again. I got the "Ewww" from my wife, and the raised eyebrows from my coworkers, and now I've written about them. Next time I'm down that way, I'll probably order fish and chips or fried chicken. For dessert, I ordered the Blackberry Cobbler. It was good but not amazing. The freshness and texture of the blackberries carried the dish. After passing on additional helpings of frog legs in hopes of getting some good Southern dessert, I was a bit disappointed in the serving size of the cobbler, but in hindsight, it was plenty big enough. Stan's Country Restaurant is a neat place. I'm not sure I'd drive all the way over there from Nashville/Hermitage while visiting family, but I will definitely eat there again the next time work brings me to MTREC.

I ordered the baked ham sandwich wonderful worth 4-5 stars but my husband ordered the daily special and there was nothing special about it dry mash potatoes and chicken breast and a cold pancake yuck! So if you go the order the ham sandwich

Friendly service but truck stop food and a really horrid pile of made in China kitsch that they call a gift shop. Makes Cracker Barrel look like Neiman Marcus. Ordered chili with cornbread --- should have guessed when she said well IF you want on the cornbread. The chili was bland but ok; the "cornbread" was a white batter pancake -- same thing my husband got when he ordered pancakes, just a little flatter. She explained later when we asked that "cornbread" meant "hoecake" which is cooked like a pancake but none of it had anything to do with cornmeal. They have "crackling bread" which is deep fried version of the same thing but from what the waitress said it is the same white flour pasty batter. I gather that their real claim to good food has to do with cured meats, so if you are a fan of ham etc you will probably fair better.

  • Brittany C.

If you're going to offer home cooking across the road from Cracker Barrel, you might want to cover up the straight-from-food service effect. I'm not sure why they put the piece of ham in my green beans, because they were clearly straight from a can and had not been cooked with meat. The biscuits were freezer biscuits. The chicken breast was just as lackluster. The waitress was super nice, though!

We were travelling north and decided to stay at the Hampton Inn in Columbia, TN. It was getting late and we had not eaten much that day so we asked the desk clerk what our options were with regards to getting a meal that would be close by; basically she said we had two choices Cracker Barrel or Stan's. My wife and I typically don't like eating at chain places although but on the other hand we don't want to eat at a place in which we won't feel comfortable, Stan's was perfect. Had it been earlier we would have walked to Stan's however since it was getting late (dark) we elected to drive. The food was very good (equal to Cracker Barrel) although a bit too much fried food for my taste although that seems to be the case for most restaurants now days however the real advantage over Cracker Barrel is that Stan's serve beer. That was like icing on the cake after a long drive.

Food was just okay. All meat was really salty especially the hot dogs. Daughter in law described as burnt salt. Also would have thought that the salad dressing would be home made. Servers were really friendly, probably because the cutie grandson was with us.

Pretty good. I would say its equal to Cracker Barrel but I would suggest it just to say you tried a local restaurant. I got my meal to go and it came out on time. Had the country fried steak and was able to cut it with a plastic fork. Mashed pots w/brown gravy and green beans was very good. Okra was ok.

We ate there last night. The food was waaaaaay better than Cracker Barrell. This place has been around much longer than Cracker Barrell and I've eaten here many times over the years. I had all you can eat catfish filets with a side salad, white beans, fried okra. I couldn't begin to eat all of it. The fried chicken my daughter had was crispy and she loves ed it. My husband had grilled grouper. Our waitress was very friendly and prompt. A side note- years ago a man came in this place and offered the owner money to buy it and make it into a chain, but he refused. That man went up to Lebanon, TN and founded Cracker Barrell. Stan's isn't in as good a shape as it used to be when I was a kid, but the food is really good. Don't be swayed by the reviews that talk about it being given dirty. They just are turned off by the run down gift shop. The kitchen and restaurant are clean, and you'll get some great home cooking without having to wait in line across the street. If you want to shop for fake country stuff, go across the street after your meal.

Stopped in for some lunch on the way to Nashville and found a good ol' country restaurant. Late breakfast for me... Fried pork chops for her... Just can't beat country cookin'! If ever in the area of Columbia, TN. Stop by and grab some grub.

I love a good "diners drive ins and dives" kind of place and you would think this would fit the bill. But this dive just makes you feel dirty when you are done. Nothing special on food that would make me even give it another try. Believe me when I say I wanted to like it but just found it gross.

This place needs to be reported to the Health Dept. & then SHUT DOWN ASAP!! DO NOT EAT HERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO EAT FOOD THAT'S ALREADY BEEN ON SOMEONE ELSE'S PLATE!!!--YES, YOU HEARD ME!!! I ordered the turkey dinner & after I was 3/4's of the way done, I turned the piece of 'meat' over & THERE WAS A MASHED UP STRAW WRAPPER on the other side of it!! I'll start with the positives. The "cracker barrel" style store was interesting to walk through and if you're into dream catchers and John Deere stuff, it's the place for you. Personally there was nothing I would consider buying, but it's still fun to look through old crap that's acquired 10 years of dust. Now, on to the food. The blueberry hotcakes were DELICIOUS! And way too filling. I couldn't finish them, not even close. The negatives?... The coffee. It. Was. Terrible. Moving on. The service... Well, the service was pretty average. Nothing really to write home about. (Although, I am writing a Yelp review so...?) The only complaint I have is that I felt pressured into ordering even after I asked if I could have a few more minutes to decide. The server stood there hovering and waiting until finally I just ordered the first thing I saw just to get her to stop hovering. Collectively, I'm glad we stopped in. The place is cute!

Kind of thrown by the bad reviews here. Say what? I wish there were more reviews from locals and regulars. My dad has always been great at finding the places you'd see and say, "Are you sure about this place?" I'm obviously an out-of-towner and I LOVED it. The waitress was a sweetie and not at all rude about my lack of knowledge when it comes to certain southern foods. I ordered the catfish and with the included extras required 3 plates for all of the food. I'm a Cali girl with a Cajun appetite, so I powered through a surprising amount of that. Chalk it up to good food! The catfish was impressive, the turnip greens and hush puppies were so tasty that I've been craving them ever since. The store was quaint and yes, full of kitschy crap you don't need, but there is some pretty neat stuff in their glass display. As for the cleanliness, I have no complaints. The decor and bathroom our outdated, but I wouldn't change that at all! It only adds to the charm and should be viewed something you're not able to find often, these days. I hope that Stan's becomes a regular stop for me, when I'm visiting family.
