Sugar’s Ribs Menu

My husband and I are visiting the city and Sugar's was recommended to us when we said we wanted ribs. We thought the ribs were great. We both ordered the crispy potatoes as a side because my husband wanted cheese on his and I wanted plain. We would have liked a side salad but the only small salad is the lettuce wedge, we were told. We each got a half rack of ribs. We were basing this on the half rack we get at Outback in our home city, but Sugar's half rack is twice the number of ribs and twice the size per rib. I like that they cut them into individual ribs for you. A half rack of ribs and one order of potatoes would have been enough food for us. A corn muffin comes with the meal. I found the muffin to be dry - getting butter to go on it helps. I thought the sauces were good. I would not rave about any of them but they were good and we enjoyed the opportunity to try a variety. We certainly would visit Sugar's again if we wanted ribs. Our warm towel didn't arrive immediately after our meal. I had already finished eating and gone to the restroom and washed my hands before it came, because I am a very messy rib eater! I would actually prefer to have it during my meal to clean fingers before picking up other foods.

I highly recommend the pork taco, as that was my favorite part of this meal. Served on a homemade tortilla, the pork was tender and flavorful. Since they do not offer a side salad, I also ordered the mojo slaw. The serving size was huge, and while it was almost a salad with cilantro and lettuce in addition to red and green cabbage, there was too much lime in it for my taste. I also had an appetizer of queso fundido with homemade chips. The queso was great, although I could have done without the sausage in it. It's apparent Sugar's tries to be an upscale barbecue restaurant and for the most part succeeds, offering many fresh made dishes with ingredients a cut above the standard. They also offer nice touches such as warm washcloths at the end of dinner to clean your sticky hands. Our service was friendly and attentive, and I loved the retro feel of the restaurant.

I dined here a few days ago for the first time and it was such an unprofessional and awful experience I've experienced in some time. Food was OK but it was more so the feel of the place that turned me off. Service was terrible, and it was dead. Not to mention, they didn't even have Jack Daniels available. That's a TENNESSEE whiskey, not available in their "bourbon bar" I don't really understand any of this, having worked in the industry. One of the staff members who seemed to be the manager sat in a booth on a laptop and texting the entire time, not bothering to check on any tables. Near the end on my trip to the restroom, as I walked by all the staff hanging out up front with the manager(I'm assuming because he was older and had a clipboard), I heard him say something inappropriate to one of them that made me actually scared for the girl to even be working there. Only reason to mention that. All in all, don't eat here.

Stopped in for dinner while working in Chattanooga. This Sugars is located in the downtown river-front area, the original is a few miles away south of downtown. The building is nice, very clean with a somewhat southwest motif. I had some BBQ. It was bland and served in small portons. I should of known better since the outside lists BBG along with stone-fired pizza. The night I was there, they had live music. I don't like to bash people that are chasing their dreams, but this cat needed some professional vocal lessons. The good news is that there are many other better restaraunts within walking distance!

Convenient location down on Broad Strret. This used to be Buffalo Wild Wings a few years ago. I'm here on a Thursday night at 7pm and they aren't busy. menu items ordered: bar b q sandwich, home French fried potatoes, and a coke. They have 6 sauces on the table. So, if you order a bar b q sandwich, it will come plain with no sauce on it. You pick 1 of 6 sauces which are carloina, sweet and goopy, classic, mustard, mild, or hot lips. I chose 2. I liked the sweet and the classic. It was pretty good but I just wanted to try their bar b q. The bar b q sandwich was pulled pork and came with hamburger buns. I enjoyed it but their sauces could have been a little more country tasting. The home fries as this restaurant calls them, came sliced from potatoes with the outer skin still attached. I think they would have tasted better with this skin peeled personally.

Wonderful atmosphere! Quite upscale for a "BBQ Joint", but still casual. Really get what you pay for here, delicious food and large portions.

I was rushed for lunch and this place was close. What a wonderful surprise. I had the tacos and okra chips. The food was fast, the service friendly and everything I had was perfectly cooked. The tacos had a flavorful combination of toppings and the okra chips were much better than they sound. I felt bad I had to rush but I was able to get in and out in under half an hour, and have good food.

Very good ribs! Great selection of sauces and cool atmosphere. Live music venue as well! I recommend the dry ribs and taking advantage of the sauce options.

Wow. The bartender and waiters could not having given a flying flip our party of 5 was there for lunch today. No smile or hello, and really slow bad service. Real disappointing as we were looking forward to this place. Shame how uninspired staff can ruin an experience.

Staff and service were great! The food was good, but the bbq was just not great. We had 4 people so we ordered the family style to try a little of everything. The ribs and tacos were the best. The rest of the meal was just OK. The location was one of the best attributes. We were told they have live music on the weekends, but we were there during the week.

Most incredible food you'll ever eat. Wood grilled okra is the best thing ever. Ribs can't be beat, plan and simple. Staff is friendly and fast.

The good: The ribs were superb and fell right off the bone. While they're a bit pricey for a half rack, it's enough meat for two people to share. The service was fast and friendly. The outdoor seating had a great view. The selection of BBQ sauce is sure to please all palates! The bad: Watch out for the Jalapeños! My friend was literally in tears after biting into one.

Disappointing to say the least, the Brisket, chicken and pulled pork were all over cooked and dry. The Sauces were either bland or vinegary. The Sweet and Goopy was the best of the bunch. Although I am not a vinegar based BBQ sauce fan they did serve a clear sauce that I found interesting. The atmosphere is bar turned restaurant, then back to bar at night. Place is clean good service. The one plus of the meal was the Banana pudding, I would order 5 pounds and eat it all. Most likely get sick doing it, but still LOL. Do your self a favor and go across the street.

Take this for what it's worth, as I did not actually eat here. I can only review the experience up until the group I was with and I finally gave up and left. Let's talk about missed opportunities: I came into Chattanooga for the annual Head of the Hooch rowing regatta - one of the biggest events of the season for many collegiate, high school, and club teams. Tens of thousands of people come to compete, staff teams and vendors, or spectate. You get it; it's kind of a big deal. So, naturally, you'd think enterprising business owners and managers would be rolling out their A-game to make some sweet, sweet cash on a weekend like this. Only makes sense, but that's armchair quarterbacking and I digress. Back to Sugar's. OK - it was about 1PM, and a group of 4 including myself walked into Sugar's hoping to get a table and eat some bbq. The hostess told us it would be at least 45 minutes to be seated - there was barely anybody in the restaurant. It was dead. She must've seen the puzzled looks on our faces, because before we could ask "why?!" she explained in detail that a couple servers had called out of work at the last minute and left the staff who actually did show up to work that day high and dry. Well, that sucks and all, and I'm not upset at all at the hostess or the wait staff who got shafted for that shift, but the management should make a special note of what a failure it was to let that restaurant sit dead on a pretty busy day. I'm guessing they didn't have anyone on-call to come bail out the staff if they got in the weeds? In the time we waited in the small area near the front door, we saw about 15 people give up and leave without being seated or served. So my group had to weigh our options: should we wait and eat bbq that was highly recommended to us and risk the high likelihood that service would be swamped and the kitchen might be overwhelmed; or should we hedge our bets and go elsewhere? We went elsewhere. And that's going to keep happening when management makes boneheaded decisions on staffing during busy events.

I have tried the food there twice, both times I was disappointed, all side items are an extra price, for $13.95 I got a half a rack of ribs! So for an extra $2.50 more- you can order a side item! Gee thanks Sugars! I can go to Logan's and for around the same price, I can get Ribs, a salad, baked potato, rolls and a drink. And the ribs are better also. They have entertainment also. But eat cheaper somewhere else before you go

3.5 stars. This place was very yummy! I'm not a BBQ fan, but my husband is so he wanted to check this place out. It was well decorated to the theme of music legends. My husband thought the ribs were good, not the best he's ever had but good. I had the pork butt sandwich which I really enjoyed. Great corn on the cob too! I'd recommend trying it out at least once for sure.

Awesome authentic southern bbq. The all you can eat is dangerous. So much good food to choose from at one sitting. The service matched the food. When I'm in Chattanooga again, Sugars is definitely on my to do list. Check them out if you haven't already!

If you're into the Kansas City BBQ style than this may not be your spot, but the food is still very good as a whole. Totally different from any BBQ I've eve had but it stands it's ground. The ribs have a nice char from the wood grill they use, and it falls off the bone so easily that the meat fell on the table when my wife passed me a rib! I had one of the lunch specials: pulled pork sandwich with a side of red bean chili. Just a hair under $10 with a drink, a side and corn muffin? Yeah! The chili was stellar! The pork was somewhat bland but I was glad that also had a little char and crisp to it, a nice change to the pulled pork most places serve that tastes chewy like it was boiled. The aforementioned blandness is not a big deal as their table sauces were made to be absorbed by this delicious meat. Unfortunately the cornbread was sadly dry, crumbly and uncharacteristically white in color. Never in my life have I not loved or devoured cornbread...until today. The kids meals are very hearty! My daughter had the chicken legs: three wood grilled chicken legs for just over $3? Yes please! Cowboy beans looked good but I didn't taste them. Allegedly the banana pudding is amazing (but I hate bananas so I can neither confirm not deny). So my wife decides she should try some...that is until the waitress (friendly, polite, sporadically seen at our table) told us she was bringing us the check. We decided to take it to go since it was clear she didn't want to serve us anymore. The food is top notch but this place needs some recalibration in their steps of service. The food was not brought out in one trip but three. And we had to ask for the cole slaw. It was very slow during lunch also so I'm not sure why our waitress didn't check on us after we had essentially finished our meals. If you just want to be left alone to nurse your one beverage and eat your BBQ in solitude this may be your haven. But most of us appreciate smooth service with someone at least checking on you to see if you're happy, answer your questions about their many options with actual detail, and anticipating things like to-go boxes for the leftovers while also clearing plates that have clearly been sitting there so long they're going to need a second run through the dishwasher to remove that caked-on sauce. Get the service part of the equation tightened up and you have a can't miss winner! That cornbread though...

Visiting Nashville for first time with daughter who just moved here...drove to Chattanooga and were so happy to have this wonderful place recommended to us. We ate lots...the grilled okra and onions were amazing..wish Iknew how they made it....and I never liked okra...not till now...a MUST! Wife had the nachos with the pork, cheeses, tomatoes and scallions which, of course I had to sample...OUTSTANDING! I had the hot lettuce wedge which Ihave never ate anything like it before and LOVED it along with a pork taco, the latter being the only item that was jut "OK"...The banana pudding was to die for, GREAT job...will be back. And ALL lf the staff were sooooo service oriented, sweet, helpful and fun. GREAT STAFF! Keep it up.

Brisket dinner was not the best I've had but it was good. Had the brisket taco's a year ago and they were awesome. Also tried the butt poppers this time and they were awesome. Picture jalapeño loaded with brisket and cheese. Service was attentive and friendly. I will definitely be back next time I pass through Chattanooga.

Delicious place for all things meat-y, right in the middle of downtown. It was a cold, icky day in Chattanooga (just like Atlanta, oh and most of the SE...) and I decided on Southern comfort food for lunch. The lunch prices are great as the have $7.99 and $9.49 lunch deals - all kinds of pick two items, a side and a tea or a soft drink - and individual items, if you aren't as hungry, are as low as $2.75 for some of the "mini-Q" sandwiches. I was debating a mini sandwich or a taco, and everything sounded good - especially the brisket taco (note, their tacos come only in corn shells) - and ultimately went with the Fajita-Q mini. So good! I almost ordered a second, but made do with my yummy side of grilled okra to round out my meal. The sandwich is on a small toasted bun, and has margarita-marinated rib meat, a grilled onion ring, cilantro and radish. You really don't need any of Sugar's special sauces, this is so flavorful. NPWH and it will be hard to convince myself to try something different - would getting the full size sandwich count?!

Just ate here tonight. I got the BBQ butt sandwich with corn on the cob as my side. The pork on the sandwich was good, but it had a bit more fat than I like on my sandwich so I picked through it. The corn however was AMAZING. At first I thought "For $3, this better be the best corn I've ever had." I wasn't disappointed. I'd go back just for the corn. Additionally, they had live music which was amazing. The decor was comfortable and the service was great. I'll probably head back a few times while I'm in the area, if not for the food then for the live music.

Had dinner here last night - ordered the ribs. They were good, solidly good - ate them at the bar. They weren't blow-me-away good - lacked in seasoning I thought, leaving you feeling like you needed to supplement it a little with the sauces on offer. Atmosphere was fine - kind of neighborhood feel to it. Smallish stage for live music - solo guitarist playing and singing. Bartender seemed a little peeved that I didn't eat or drink more than I did. Not very impressed with him at all. When it came time to pay the ticket he deliberately made me wait. I can't fault the whole place for that but he's not an asset.

The food was just ok. The waitress wasn't super friendly or attentive. The restaurant wasn't crowded so we expected better service. The good: queso and guacamole and chips, corn on the cob and the chicken was moist and flavorful. The bad: the brisket was dry, the corn bread was dry (maybe they should offer some honey butter with it). The macaroni and cheese was not that cheesy. Almost all of the sauces on the table were empty.

I loved the sauces in this joint. This was the first place we ate in Chattanooga and it was really good. I had the rib slider and some kind of bean/chicken stew that was really good. I also had one of the jalapeno appetizers!! YUMMY!! Our waitress was super nice--answered tons of questions from us since this was out first stop in a new city. Also...the banana pudding was to die for---seriously. Love me some nanner puddin'!!

I saw the sign and thought it would be a good BBQ place. The inside made me nervous since it looked like a themed restaurant. We were seated rather quickly and it was Valentines day, Friday night. I tried the ribs, Mac and cheese, grilled corn, mayo slaw, and queso fundido starter. The ribs were excellent and the queso was awesome. All nervousness stopped. It was a little weird the food came out as we were eating our appetizer but I got creative and dipped the corn bread in the queso. It was a match made in heaven. The staff were friendly, not perfect but made a great effort.

Sugar's tries to do a lot. It's a bar, a music hall, a Tex-Mex tienda, a greasy spoon and a rib joint. It's hard to be all those things. The pulled pork butt/shoulder is excellent - smoky and moist, with the right mix of fat and meat. The ribs, while falling off the bone, did so because they were overdone. Six different regional sauces were on the table, but all were kinda watery. It's not bad, but of you're looking for BBQ, look elsewhere.

II am a competition BBQ cook on the KCBS circuit so I don't know how they got any awards. Service was awful! Onions were not cooked and were still hard and okra was charred too much basically burnt!

Grilled chicken sandwich was good. Only down side is everything is separate so it adds up fast with sides. The sweet and goopy sauce was amazing as well. . If your down for adventure the tequila flight is the way to go here.

I just stopped into the bar and had a taco. I thought the food was 4 stars, maybe even 5, but the service was 2...if that. It probably took about 20 minutes just to place my order, and there were only 6 people at the bar, including myself. It the took at least 15 minutes to get my one taco.

Come here for the Ribs. Fall off the bone tender, nice smoke ring, good crust. $1.50 draft beers, why wouldn't you like this place? The cornbread muffins were good as well.

We visited here for lunch with friends who were visiting for the day and wanted BBQ. I had the Cuban slaw salad with Pork and it was vey good, had a bit of a kick, probably from the cilantro, which I loved. Also got wood fired okra, yummy, corn bread OK, but not sweet. Waitress had told me this, it had corn and peppers in it. Friends got a Brisket sandwich with Mac and cheese, both OK, taco were good. Waitress was very nice and attentive ( place was not crowded) and offered us soft drinks to go. Overall good, I would go back for the unique salad, BBQ sauces were not thick.

Been touring around hitting great BBQ joints and this one was one of the best. Their hot sauce, it's green, it's hot, it's amazing. One of the most original sauces I've tried.

We had just arrived to Chattanooga and were starving. Drove past this place and were very much intrigued. Upon walking inside we were a bit skeptical of what we were walking into. the place is themed and a bit dark. But the decor became a non factor once our waiter came to the table... he was so awesome Full of energy and very helpful with helping to select items off the menu. I had the best time with my friends here. I also loved that I was supporting a family owned business. Try It...

My friend and I stopped by while we were visiting from Nashville. The decor is okay but the food is GREAT! I had the tacos- pork, beef, and chicken. They were seasoned perfectly and had crumbled cheese to top them off. The okra fries were an unexpected surprise- the flavor is like a crispy piece if bacon with a light texture. I'll be back for sure.

I stopped in Chattanooga on a road trip from Atlanta to Louisville and found the advertisement for Sugars on a highway billboard. We had butt poppers, corn on the cob, baby back ribs, potato salad, and collard greens. The food was awesome. I grew up in the South and I can honestly say that the collard greens were the best I have ever eaten. The corn was grilled and as sweet as dessert. The butt poppers melted in my mouth. They served corn muffins with the meal that were equally delicious. The only down side was a couple of loud musicians playing music when we first arrived. Thankfully, they didn't play for long. I will definitely return to this restaurant the next opportunity I get to go to Chattanooga.

  • Aimee J.

The wood grilled okra was fantastic. It was the best okra I have ever had. I agree it is charred, but it doesn't taste burnt - instead it is wonderfully flavorful with a great texture. My sons both loved the corn on the cob. The sauce selection was great. The pork butt was much better than the ribs. The wood grilled half chicken was also very good - tender, moist and seasoned just about right. I wish I could rate this higher, but the featured item (ribs) were not that great. They really needed more seasoning and they needed to be cooked longer. If we ever go again, I would go for the pork butt.

Eat at Sugars. Drink the sure thing margarita. Put the clearly sauce on your meat. Sit at the back bar with Rob and tell him I sent you. That is all.

Very Average in every sense of the word. AVERAGE FOOD AVERAGE SERVICE AVERAGE PRICES. Why would I return? That's right I won't. There are too many other good places to try in the area. Would prefer to give it a 2.5

I find the rating system a little harsh here on Yelp, but 1 star is I think not, and 2 star is I've experience better. So I went and ate at Sugar's on Broad on 4/27 with my wife and my friend. We were staying in the hampton next door and were attending a concert at track 29. We had tried sticky fingers before, and wearn't real impressed. I got to tell you, I travel the country on a motorcycle. I ride anywhere from 15-30,000 miles a year and love my BBQ. I am kind of a BBQ Snob. We arrived around 6pm, and the place was pretty empty. It was a sunday night though, and chattanooga can be sleepy. Our server was Trey. He walked up to us, and didn't even greet us. Didn't thank us for coming, or even look at us. He was looking up at the ceiling. He just walked up and said.. "What do you want to drink.." I asked him what Beers he had, as they were not listed on the menu. He sighed, rolled his eyes, starred at the ceiling, and said.. "Lots" as he gestured towards the bar. Interesting as the bar was all the way across the resturaunt and I couldn't see tap handles. So I asked him again, he then rambled off the beers. I ordered a Chattanooga Brewing Company IPA. He then walked away without even thanking us, after we thanked him. This kid (Trey) was super rude, it was obvious Mommy and Daddy was making him work for a living, and he wasn't liking it. So I am kind of a beer snob too, so I use an app called untappd that I use to check in my beers. I went to look at CBC IPAs, and noticed there was 3 different ones. Instead of dealing with Trey I strolled over to the bar. What is funny, is the tap handles didn't even match what he told me they had. So much for his vanna white gesture. So I asked the bartender what IPA was it, he said CBC. I said, great, untapped shows that the CBC has brewed 3 different IPA's, which one is it? Dumbfounded look.. I am still not really sure which beer I drank. Sugar's had about 5-6 different kinds of meats. We tried to order chicken, and they were out. 6pm on a sunday and you are out of chicken? Crazy. I ordered a pork mini and a briskit mini. Both were pretty good. I do have to say the meats in this place were not bad. My buddy had the ribs and shared some, they were good as well. The sides were lacking, like most BBQ restaurants. The Rocking Stew was not like a brunswick stew, but like a liquidy stew. It was full of veggies and meat, but was bland. My wife got a buttered corn on the cob. It cost $2.75. I just bought 8 ears of corn at publix for $2. I can't believe the markup. The mac and cheese was bad, it tasted like it came out of the box. Muellers Noodles and some melted cheese. I thought maybe Trey was just irritated at us, but no, I noticed he was doing the same horrible things and giving the same horrible attitude to the 2 other tables he was waiting. I left a $2 tip as I don't stiff anyone, but left a note for Trey that if he hated his job he should find a new one. I will not be back to Sugars. I still have not found a good BBQ in Chattanooga. For Decent meats, overpriced sides, and horrible service you can count me out. On the other hand Beers were half price that day ($2, and very reasonable).

I'm fat, full, and happy. We arrived and hit the food jackpot with Sugar's as our first stop. Now the dilemma is if we should return to a knowingly delicious spot, or risk falling short with another joint. Yes, it is a gamble. I ordered the mojo salad as I am going low cal these days and was not disappointed. All ingredients were fresh. The jalapeño appetizer was the best I ever had. My boyfriend ordered the ribs and greens. It was a blast working our way through the various sauces. Our waiter (Jonathan, I believe) was direct, funny, and made great recommendations. The manager stopped by to ensure our contentment. Not that it took away from our experience at all, but I would have liked to see a larger variety of local craft beers....it just goes hand in hand with BBQ!

Never going back! doesn't deserve one star! Boasts 6 bbq sauces....none of them were good. Everything comes a la cart...which I thought was a little weird. Most of us ordered tacos....they were cold! tortillas were cold...meat was cold. mac and cheese was "house-made"....nothing special...tasted like "box-made" to me. potato salad was also below par. the high-light of the meal was the rib-burger my buddy ordered. it wasn't bad and was hot. But.......his gf found a hair in her coleslaw. Couldn't believe what a bad experience we had. The place looked cool and smelled great when we walked in, but went downhill from there.

Food is pretty good, like the butt poppers but have to give 1 star because service is atrocious. Our server had the personality of a block of wood and the first words out of her mouth were drinks for the kids aren't included with kids meals. We also waited 20 minutes for a table when the place was half empty - they told us they were short handed and couldn't seat us because they wanted to "ensure customer service" - fail

Not your typical BBQ place. Walking in it felt more like a night club than a traditional, down home, smokey BBQ joint. The staff were all attentive and courteous. The meat was well smoked, and juicy and tender. Great quality. I had a Mini Que, which is basically a BBQ slider. A brisket taco, and pork stuffed jalapeño poppers. OMG, they were delicious. I'll definitely go back.

    (5)
  • Jason G.

Proper BBQ. Quality smoked meats. The ribs are outstanding. I suggest getting a few mini-Q sandwiches and get one of everything. The rotisserie chicken might be the best I have found anywhere, which pairs well with the mustard sauce btw. Really interesting that they specialize in bourbons AND tequila. The margarita is the real deal. Coming back for sure

  • James Z.

This place is just alright in my opinion. First impression, the aroma smelled nice with BBQ smoke filling the restaurant. The decor is on the cheap side and had the local dive look. It is pricey for what you get with everything pretty much a la carte. A half rack of spare ribs was 13.95 on it's own and didn't come with any sides. Meals get pricey when you add a drink and a side. The ribs did fall off the bone and had good flavor but I didn't like the BBQ sauces they make. I sampled all of them and really wasn't impressed . All the sauces were watery with no thickness to them. I'd probably skip this place and go elsewhere as they were not a cut above the rest .

Went here 3 times when I was in town First was a full stack of pork ribs. Mac and cheese. Grilled okra. I had a pbr and some outstanding bournon recommendations from the owner. Extremely reasonable prices, especially for top shelf. Was not impressed by the ribs. Had a lot of burnt ends. They don't serve a full rack of ribs, but rather a bowl of them. Weird. For dinner I had take out. Pork butt, beef brisket. Some Mac and cheese. The meats all tasted the same, steamed, nothing really outstanding. Sugars does a memphis style rib, but I found that the spice rub was virtually non-existant. The meats I had were all very moist, had nice pink smoke rings and tender. It was fall of the bone, which I found annoying. I found this was attributed to excessive steaming. I like my meat to have a bit of chew to them. The sauces are great. Liked them a lot. Great rye whiskey. Top shelf 22yr old hirsh. Great spirits selection, that's pretty much the only reason to come here.

I really enjoyed my meal here. Not the best sauces I have ever had or the most user friendly menu but that aside my meal was superb. Having to order all the sides individually was annoying but I guess it works. My sandwich was moist and tasty mac and cheese was super as well. The corn on the cob was decent but probably the weakest part of my meal especially when it was over two dollars. Now for a few big negatives. My girlfriends (at the time) ribs were burnt not all of them but even one burnt is too many. They don't have any fried food at all and that is rubbish! No fried pickles no French fries nothing. Ugh that really hurts a bbq joint in my opinion. The best for last... 11 till 7 dollar beers in decent sized glasses. Bud miller mich all your domestic staples a buck hell yes! That almost made up for the ribs. So if you are tired of sticky fingers this is surely a place to try out.

This was an extremely good place for ribs and brisket. The flavors that are at the table are a variety on itself. The homemade cornbread and greens and the final touch to the meal. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anybody in the area of downtown Chattanooga.

Food was not stellar BBQ. Meat came out cold, asked for new plate. Witnessed manager reach bare hands into chips and eat. I brought this to his attention and he stated, "My hands are clean." Manger never acknowledged wrongdoing. Bar attendant was pleasant and informative l to us as visitors.

Unique tequila bar in the middle of chattanooga - I enjoyed the bbq chicken pizza (aka Flatbread). It was quite good. My partner had a bbq sandwich, cornbread & another side. Server was "authentic" Chattanooga w/ blk & white checkered flannel. Fair price for decent food!

You have to figure you're taking a chance ordering Pizza in a BBQ joint, but the Sausage Pizza was great. Very friendly staff.

We were a big group and wanted to try everything on the menu. We went with the all you can eat family meal. Brisket, ribs, pork, chicken, wood fire grilled onions and okra were all amazing. Both the mayo and the vinegar cole slaws suck. It was great to pick from so many sauces. I really enjoyed it as did my family. Good pick.

I was a little dissapointed with this place! Long wait, semi-warm ribs, ok sweet tea and sucky potato salad! The atmosphere is nice and the wait staff is good, but the damn sauces and chili's are the best things in there to me! :-(

I heart Sugar's atmosphere, pork tacos, and great music theme. They have many sauces to choose from and I have found it extremely affordable. Get the grilled okra. Do it.

Great ribs (fell off the bone) and you MUST have the banana pudding...absolutely amazing!

My family just moved to the area from Ohio. While my sister was visiting during the 4th holiday we visited downtown a few times and ate at Sugar's on a Friday evening. We had a short wait but not to bad for needing a table for 6, on a Friday night in downtown. They have a jazz band that played and they sounded pretty good. As we were finishing dinner shortly after they started. Food was okay. I wasn't disappointed but not the best BBQ Chattanooga has to offer. I had the brisket and it was cooked well. Not much flavor and I didn't care for any of the sauces. Out of 6 sauces none of them had a good BBQ taste with a kick. I like a little spice. The kids enjoyed their banana pudding for desert. I thought service was a little slow and the cups were like 8 oz. Poor server was at our table every few minutes refilling tea. I'm not sure I would go back or not. I would probably go back to Famous Dave's or Sticky Fingers first!

Lot's of great food here! BBQ is specific to the taster so try it out. We liked it.

We spent a week in Chattanooga and ended up here twice. Loved the juke box and the food. Slight Charcoal taste on the ribs, but I guess that is typical tennessee style....its the only reason 4 instead of 5 stars. The first time we ate there we had a party of 12, so the table had a little bit of everything....all good. 2nd trip, We picked up pork sandwiches on the way out of town and our white water rafting trip...wish I would have got two of them. The juke box is awesome and cheap.

Sugar's was our second of three barbecue stops while in Chattanooga. We moved from the Mom 'n Pop type place the evening before (Hillbilly Willy's) to a large, more commercial place for lunch. I have to say that Sugar's does a good job in somewhat different style. I ordered way too much food so we could sample but we ate most of it. The ribs were reasonably smoky, but clearly are blackened on a grill to finish which is somewhat unique. They were tender, moist and a little sweet and not served sauced. The pulled pork had mild smoke, not dry, nicely done and went well with a mix of their Carolina sauce and the Clearly Hot sauce. I should mention they have six sauces. I don't recall them all but the Carolina sauce is much sweeter than you will find in Lexington and eastern NC. Maybe it gets sweeter farther west. The Clearly Hot supposedly has habanero, but don't let that scare you, it is not hot at all. The Tennessee Sweet and Goopy sauce was Ms T's choice. It had a little lemon flavor and balanced tart and sweet. The brisket was just OK, not a lot of flavor and somewhat dry. The chicken was also not smoked. It may have been rotisserie cooked because it just did not have smoke. The potato salad was large solid cubes, not sweet, not much flavor at all. The vinegar slaw was very plain, tart. The creamy slaw was better, a little sweet. You could mix the two slaws and have a better balance. We really liked the okra, which was grilled. It reminded me of some of the okra we have had at the home of Indian friends, without the spices. This is a thing to try at home. The corn bread was very simple, uninspired. We both loved the Texas style pinto beans with cilantro. If you want sweet beans, these are not for you, but these were great pintos.

Really bad. At 7pm dinner time a band was warming up and was having sound issues so for 30 minutes you heard check one-two. The good part is it took your attention away from the horrible food. Classic case of confusing smoked with burnt and dry. I tried all three types of BBQ. Very cold and dry. I am a big guy and a big eater. I did not finish, ordered a box and left it behind. To end the night the banana pudding was served with a big curly black hair. Overall just bad and I was very disappointed as I was excited to try.

I was hoping for some great BBQ and got dry, flavorless ribs, a bag of Lays chips (in a sit down place, really?) and 3 unbreaded jalapeno peppers covered with mozzarella and called "poppers". If you want good BBQ ask a local, they wont suggest Sugars.

Pros: Corn on the cob, turnip greens, bbq sauce. Cons: Potato salad dry and tasteless, banana pudding was like baby food in a bowl with a couple of wafers thrown in at the last minute. No right to call in banana pudding!

After the disaster of the other location we decided to try the downtown location. In comparison it was much butter but being honest they had no place to go but up. The service was very friendly if a bit slow at first. There were 5 of us in the party and we were hungry. The ribs were a lot more tender than the other location but as another reviewer stated they came out in a bowl, hell everything came out in bowls. THe cornbread wasn't bad. The sides for what they charged were incredibly small, though flavorful, I had the red chili and it was very good. The brisket seemed a bit dry to me, the chicken wasn't bad. The sauces on the table weren't bad. That's the whole point really, nothing was so fantastic but nothing horrific. If I could I'd give it 2 1/2 stars, so when looking at the description I had to side with 2 instead of 3.

The ribs literally fall off the bone, and the brisket is as tender as roast beef. The wood grilled okra is grilled whole and is delicious! The bar menu has an extensive bourbon selection. The sauces aren't my personal favorite, but the meat is so good, I was happy without any.

My friend and I were skeptical about going into Sugar's Rib because of the mix reviews. However, we really enjoyed our experience at Sugar's. Customer service was really good. We were seated right away and there was a party of 8. We all decided to get the family style meal which was a lot of food and a good price for the amount of food we received. The BBQ was wonderful. Everything was good from the appetizer to the dessert! I was told the ribs were very tender. My favorites were the queso dip, okra, potato salad and chicken. The brisket and roasted onions were good also. Everything was seasoned very well. If I am ever in the Chattanooga area, I will definitely return to Sugar's. Oh the music was good too!

We just got back from this place since we are staying walking distance from it at the Double Tree hotel. I have to say that I should have read or looked at the prices before I went in. $3 something for a taco!! I was thinking this taco better be worth it. I got the chicken taco. Maybe I didn't read the description correctly, but the the tortilla was cold. It was a bit smaller than my hand and it was just one on the plate. Authentic tacos I've eaten before never cost that much and tasted way better. We also got the mini Q BBQ Butt and BBQ Chicken sandwich. It was good, but we didn't think it was anything extraordinary. The service was alright, nothing to complain about. The restaurants decor is nice, but the price for me isn't what I expected from a BBQ place.

Their signature rib burger, which is a patty made out of pork rib meat, was dry. The turnip greens and grilled okra were good. The service was good as well. We would not try this place again.

We came here on a whim on July 4th Independence Day. We weren't sure what to expect but we walked in and were greeted immediately. The wait was about average but there is a well stocked bar where you can wet your whistle while you wait. The atmosphere reminds me of Hard Rock Cafe in Nashville mixed with a little wild horse saloon. There is live music Monday through Saturday every week. We felt relaxed for a good evening to celebrate ! He ordered the BBQ brisket with a side of the red and white chili. I ordered the BBQ butt with a side of corn on the cob and Mac n' Cheese. Both come with cornbread. There is a bourbon shot of the day Sunday through Thursday for only $2 which we thought was a great deal. We tried the Russel's Reserve Rye. The food was great and very reasonably priced. Our favorite sauces were the tennessee sweet & goopy, classic BBQ and the Carolina red sauce. We had enough leftover to take home for lunch the next day. Unfortunately we were just too full for dessert but they have banana pudding and moon pies ! We are overall very pleased ! Can't wait to bring my parents when they visit !

Went for lunch and had what I would consider some of the most underwhelming BBQ I've had in life. I ordered BBQ Brisket and fire-roasted jalapenos. The jalapenos were burnt black to the point of being unrecognizable either in appearance or flavor. Imagine diced onions dipped in the blackest of paint - that's what my roasted jalapenos resembled. But I can certainly forgive appearance provided it gives way to good taste; however, the looked better than they tasted. The brisket itself, served without any sides, was near flavorless prior to the generous application of sauces at the table. And it was cold. Not sitting in the refrigerator cold mind you, but definitely room temperature. It so happened that a manager happened by at the time and asked about the meal. I let her know that it was cold and she offered to bring me another plate; I politely declined. She apologized and walked away. When the check came for the table, my cold brisket had been removed from the bill. The customer service was good, the atmosphere with music legends from the 60s and 70s on the wall was nice, but the food was in all ways disappointing. It may have been a bad day or a bad time of day, but I won't be back to try again.

I was in downtown for an interview and needed lunch/to kill time so I parked & sniffed, and followed my nose to Sugar's. Oh, the signage on the side of the building (ribs! tacos! beer!) was a clue, too. I got there a little after 1pm and the place was not full at all -- maybe downtown has an earlier lunch crowd? My server, Angela, was very good to explain the many sauces and when I said I was headed to an interview & didn't want a growling stomach nor to be full as a tick, suggested I start with one taco, "you can always order another". So I did; I ordered one smoked chicken taco and it was very tasty, with the green salsa and crunchy fresh cabbage, then of course had to order a second taco, brisket this time, which was also good and I combined a few of the sauces from my table for this one. No beer, which may or may not have helped out in my interview later. Very reasonable prices though it's a la carte and I only had the two tacos and water. And a nice, clean restroom, where I freshened up before heading out. I'd return and suggest you give 'em a chance.

This is the best bbq i've ever had! fall of the bone kinda bbq. no frilly stuff, just serious bbq meat and solid sides. there were just us two, and there was enough left over for 2 more meals. we ordered the half slab ribs, brisket, okra, red chile (beef), white chili (chicken), and cole slaw, and everything came w/ cornbread...and of course sweet tea to wash it all down. I didn't really get all the sauces that were on the table..like I don't like the thin vinegary stuff, but I loved the classic bbq sauce, and TN sweet and kookoo sauce (i think that's what it was called). The ambience was cool too. It felt like a blues bar. And we got lucky that night. at 9pm a live band played. great food and a great deal too! top notch bbq and a live concert for $32! can't beat that. (never going to Fat Matt's in ATL again! doesn't come close to this place!)

Very good quality and menu but not quite on par with the original Sugar's Ribs that's just off the highway that passes south of the city. Plus, this one didn't have the BBQ lamb. Bummer. Still, I would eat at this one again. I also recommend it to everyone who wants good BBQ in Chattanooga. Also, the bar is fully stocked and it has a great set of Bourbons, with some of the less expensive Bourbons being outstanding. Take a bunch of friends to eat. One more thing, it has dancing on Friday and Saturday nights to live bands!!!!

Love the new Texas Taco Menu.. Now I go straight to the bar and have a happy hour cold draft beer ($1.00) and order a few tacos .. UMMMM My fav is the Brisket Taco with grilled scallions and roasted salsa!

Whoever was mixing the sound is obviously deaf. My wife and I are band directors and we can handle our share of loud music, but there was entirely too much bass, enough to cause us to feel uncomfortable. A shame too, because the music itself was good. The food was ok, but not good enough to suffer through the sound.

Meh. Run of the mill bbq, good meats but service is sub standard, music is loud, and plates are chipped. Bbq beans are basically boiled beans in their liquidity sauces in recycled bottles.

I like the way the cook their chicken but hate the variety of BBQ sauces they have. Never been big on the Carolina style sauces but none of these are great. Normally, I can find something close to satisfy me. Sticky Fingers across the road has a nice sweet Carolina style that is good. Most here were closer to water. Corn on the cob was cold but other sides were ok. They get an extra star to get to three because of location and they have live music on weekends. Service was very good. This is more about preference on BBQ. If you like vinegar based its worth a try. I have picked up a To go order and put my own sauce on at home.

I believe that good BBQ should have enough original flavor on its own without being dependent on sauce. With that said, I think that the BBQ here needs some extra flavor-flav. I had pork butt for the first time and it wasn't that impressive. What is pork butt supposed to taste like? This had very little smoky flavor and was tough; not a good first impression. I also tried their ribs and although the meat was more tender, the taste was quite plain. I doused it with their "Tennessee Sweet & Goopy" sauce which was actually really tasty. My favorite part of the meal was their Grilled Okra & Onions. The Okra was DELICIOUS. That's what earns the 3rd star. Other things to note: Plenty of TV's to watch sports, free wifi, and they also have live music with a sign taped to the stage reading, "After 9:30 only, Adults on the Dance Floor, Please." ;P This wasn't my favorite BBQ place and I walked out feeling a bit sticky and icky (table was sticky and the restroom was a bit icky, good thing I went AFTER my meal!).

  • Marie M.

We went after spending the day at the children's museum and I can say it pretty much sucked. The BBQ brisket was tasteless, the cornbread was burned at the bottom and the mac and cheese was not homemade. Not to mention the place's decor is a tacky and tasteless as the food. Don't bother with this place. It was tacky and gross.
