I found this to be a really great place to eat. High quality cuts cooked and served perfectly. It's really hard to find good French Onion Soup, and this place served an outstanding receipt. I ordered a 16 oz Veal Chop on the bone, medium rare with melted Truffle Butter. It was perfect, nice char with a red/pink center. In fact it was hard not to naw on the bone, lol Yes the place is pricy, but well worth the cost.

Impeccable customer service! The filet mignon was melt in your mouth tender with a perfectly crispy outside. The potatoes au gratin were delish. Great location for a nice evening out. It's located in an amazing historic hotel that's gorgeous!

Another great meal tonight! Love the steak here. And the service was outstanding, as usual.

I was really disappointed. This is supposed to be the go to place for a steak in Chattanooga. I'll give it to the chef that he can cook a steak and make some mean mashed potatoes (the reason this got two stars). Everyone who ordered steak was happy. Everyone who ordered anything but was not. My mother and I ordered the Caesar salad to start. (A steakhouse basic, right?!) It arrived swimming in dressing with an overload of cheese, croutons and the lettuce was wilting (like it had been prepared and then sat uncovered in the refrigerator for several hours). I didn't even eat half of it. My mother's was in the same condition. For dinner, I asked for the crab cakes and the soup of the day. The crab cakes were more breading than anything else...the greens and watercress were in significantly worse shape than the lettuce (I posted a picture of the yucky) and the aioli, finally, tasted like tartar sauce out of a jar. I can keep going about what a let down this place was (all the way to dessert). Save your money and enjoy yourself at another establishment. I'm sure you'll be able to find better quality and freshness elsewhere.

A lovely lunch on a Tuesday afternoon! I was staying in the hotel so grabbing lunch at Porter's was both convenient and delicious. Service was quick and pleasant, and I can NOT rave enough about my decadent, steaming cup of French onion soup. Layered with Swiss, croutons, and sweet onions, it was the perfect precursor to my ahi tuna salad. The salad was topped with a generous serving of tuna and included mandarin slices, wasabi peas and heaps of veggies in a light peanut vinaigrette. A basket of warm rolls arrived with a dish of sweet whipped butter prior to our meal but I'm glad I didn't fill up on those alone! When I'm back in Chattanooga in a few months, I'll likely grab a meal here again.

We stayed at the hotel for Valentines Day and received vouchers for two free breakfast meals. They were the basic meal, which I sure would have been great but our AWESOME waiter was very attentive and allowed us to cash in the vouchers towards different meals. At the recommendation of the waiter we chose the Crab Eggs Benedict which was quite possibly the best breakfast I have had in my life. He explained their chef had lived in New Orleans and brought his special style to the menu. He spent time telling us about the city, brought me a paper, and could not have done a better job. I honestly feel there needs to be a special "6th star" yelpers are only allowed to give out once a year because they would have received it... (yes on BREAKFAST).... Regardless of where I stay or how much we have to pay out of pocket I will be back for that again. If you all read this I cannot remember his name (older slender gentleman) but he will probably remember us as the young adult couple considering moving there. He explained all the neighborhoods and history of each to us. Please pass on our continued thanks... Your restaurant and him personally really started our day off wonderfully!

So I was meeting a friend at the Sheraton Read House today, for lunch; I was early and she was running late. I sauntered in well ahead of her. Got to visit with the very nice staff;loved the vibe and decor. The menu had a lot of tempting things- I would definitely do a steak at dinner based on what the gentleman who sat a few seats down from me (who is temporarily residing at the Read House) at the bar suggested. Lunch would be a little lighter. After quizzing the two servers working about a number of items - and being nicely asked if I'd like to try the Caesar dressing (homemade) when I inquired if it was more of the creamy vs the traditional version (I prefer the creamy) - delicious, one of the best I've had. She was late enough and I was hungry enough to order a side of fries as an *appetizer.* She realized we needed to do takeout and eat in her room before a meeting sh was going to be late for - so I ordered a grilled chicken Caesar and the (grilled) chicken Chattanooga Salad. Both were awesome- we shared both back and forth. Did I mention you can charge anything from the restaurant to your room (bill) at the hotel? Sweet. Oh, and I got a cupcake (today's flavor was chocolate and peanut butter - really??)- saving that for later. Whether or not I am staying at the hotel or non, I like Porter's and will most likely return when in the area.

The sides and the service are fantastic! Unfortunately the steaks are not good. I got the ribeye and it was very gristly and not very good. I wouldn't come back or recommend it. The bar and drink menu also looks good.

Ordered the rib eye steak medium rare and come more like medium rare. The pasta clams is vey salty.

Ah! I can't believe I'm so late in posting this review... I visited Porter's for a delightful lunch on a weekday afternoon. I think my lunch date and I missed the lunch crowd so it was very quiet and actually, I sort of enjoyed the quiet atmosphere. For lunch, I kept it quite simple by ordering a warm turkey croissant with melted cheese and French fries. Yum. I've always wanted to stop into Porter's and have a meal and I'm glad that we did. Now, I'll have to make it in for dinner.

Best Bartender in Town! We just spent a long weekend at the Read House and Adam, the bartender at Porters Steakhouse ensured that we will return to the Read House next time we visit Chattanooga. Adam took care of us during the Social Hour and then again for glasses of wine to cool off after a hot afternoon watching the USA National bike championship race. Adam was helpful each time to determine our particular tastes before suggesting the perfect wines. He was spot on! He took the time to help solve a billing question with the hotel, and even offered to fill my empty Camelbak with water before we went back outside! Without a doubt, best service we experienced in 4 days in Chattanooga!

The good: The lobster spaghetti is good. The bad: well, just from my one experience, the $24 Kobe hamburger ordered "medium" came out "well done", so it was dry, flaky, and tasteless. The ugly: these three $25 dishes ordered for room service cost $99. How? 20% gratuity was hidden in the charge, there is a small room service fee (ok), and we added a $5 tip for the room service since we didn't notice the other charges. I hate feeling like I've been had.

Fast service. I ordered the steak frites and side of house salad. The steak frites was no more than average which was disappointing. The best part of my meal was the ipa.

Arrived at my hotel after very very slow drive. Rain rain so I decided not to go out. The steak house looked good but more than I wanted. I received a wonderful waiter, who told me about the specials. I decided on a soup of the day. It had crab, potatoes, carrots in a cream sauce. It was so good after talking to bryon, he cancelled my other order and I had another bowl of soup. A rum and coke and this was a perfect dinner. A special thank you to Byron.

I'll start by saying the service during dinner is awesome, tough to find better really. A huge improvement over the service levels during breakfast which leaves much to be desired. For the money, however, you can do much better in Chattanooga. I knew this before I ordered based on past experience, but it was cold and rainy so I wasn't leaving the hotel. The menu lacks sufficient healthy options (ie no chicken breast) and the amount of veggies offered with dinner is incredibly disappointing. My dinner tonight came with 4 very tiny asparagus spears which wouldn't be so bad if the prices were more reasonable. It was my mistake to eat here again knowing the food is not worth the high price, I should have known better. If you are reading this and have not eaten yet I highly encourage you seek other options on yelp. You can do way better!!! Nothing against the servers though, the night crew does an awesome job making it a little easier to swallow the bill.

I only had breakfast here. Twice. I was staying at the hotel and needed something close. If their steaks make up for it, then maybe they should stick to that because while breakfast #1 was mediocre, breakfast #2 had chewy bacon, I was shorted a piece of toast, and it left a pit in my stomach for hours.

Not at all what I would expect from a steakhouse. The food was bland and the service was so-so. I honestly thought the food at the diner across the street was better and more flavorful. I wouldn't dine at this restaurant again.

Using my Groupon deal, this was a new experience. Appetizer: Had the sampler. Starting w/the shrimp - the sauce that is served with it was excellent. The ahi tuna was awesome - salsa on top gave lots of extra flavor. Steak: Maybe I expect more from a place charging me $60 for a 1lb steak. I ordered the ribeye medium rare. The steak had almost no running blood and might have been a few seconds from being medium. Don't be mistaken - this was not a medium stead but it also wasn't medium rare. Sides: Tabasco onion rings are average. Asparagus is excellent - would definitely recommend this. Waiter convinced us sauteed mushrooms would go great w/our steaks... I think that would be a great idea if they were sliced but instead we got these whole mushrooms that we had to cut ourselves. SERVICE: Could have been better. After our appetizers and bread, we still waited another 10 minutes for our steak and entrees. No service during this time. In addition, we had to request that our waiter refill our glasses and take our empty dishes.... yes, I'm serious.

I'm going to start off by saying that my server was top-notch. Byron (sp?) was a gentleman through and through; so polite and attentive. I first ordered a glass of Argentina Malbec ($9) and it was fantastic. The serving looked small but I think that is due to the fun, large, red wine glass. I didn't try any apps. I'm on a business trip and one look at the menu told me I was about to spend twice my per diem. I ordered the 8oz pepperloin steak, house specialty. Byron warned me that it can be spicy but I LOVE a peppered steak. This was not that. The spice was hot, a little rough, and didn't even smell acceptable. It was so incredibly over spiced. Byron came by shortly after my first bite and asked how it was - I told him straight, I'm really not sure. I admitted that I may have underestimated the spice and I needed a minute to consider. After another bite and a half, I was certain that this was not a steak worth $32 to me - I could not eat it. Byron graciously offered a regular filet to me and I apologetically accepted. The regular filet was well cooked, slightly under if I was feeling particular, but delicious. Like other reviewers have mention, it was not seared at all. The flavor was good and the steak was fantastically tender. Overall, the food was good but overpriced. For a Prime Steakhouse in a Hotel? Probably par for the course. The service was impeccable but I'll probably not be back.

Other reviewers are correct about this place. Their sear is not what you would expect for steak this expensive and even at medium-rare it was a pretty dry steak. I literally have had a better cooked steak at Lonestar or Outback. What was most disappointing was the service was very poor. My French onion soup, which they say take six hours to make, was very pedestrian and very unexceptional. Everything about this restaurant was uninspiring and uninspired. The best thing was the wine even though it was a very short pour.

I did the standard, no-no of just ordering "take out" from a fancy restaurant but i had to have some crab cakes and the parents and brother being the "antisocial" vegetarian (except the brother) standard, stereotypes that they are - wanted Subway. So i had no choice because i was having crab cakes on this trip to Chattanooga. So i ordered the crab cakes and french onion soup. It is currently 96 degrees outside and i ordered and ate it an hour ago and i'm still thinking about it! Don't know why i got the french onion soup but i was not disappointed. It took about 15 minutes to get there and it was immediately ready and they threw in some extra table bread with no extra cost. Total came out to be : $15.84. That included two crab cakes (9.50) and french onion soup (5.50), + tax and some extra bread (3 rolls/free). On to the meat: The crab cakes, although extremely small, about 4X4 inches in diameter was extremely well made and had the perfect kind of crispy outside to it and thickness. So when i smashed it i actually took me a while to eat it. It also came with a corn, tartar, spicy aioli on top of both crab cakes that topped it deliciously. It was so different but so well made. It also came with some baby greens in a olive oil vinaigrette. The crab cakes were just the right kind of sweet without too much gooey-nesh and other ingredients to coverup the fake crab. You could tell they used the good stuff! It was delicious! The french onion soup came in a Starbucks cup which wasn't too "eye" appetizing but was delicious non-the-less. Not to salty or mild! It got cold pretty fast which didn't really disappoint me because it was so hot outside (i ate at the river walk). The bread rolls were a nicely baked soft dough bread that went well with the crab cakes (as a sammich/toast) or with the soup (and butter). Delicious. Next time i'll sit and eat with my man! He eats meat! PS. No military discount though!

Took my lady there last week, and I'm still in therapy trying to cope with the fact that i paid that much money, for such a disappointing meal. My lobster was brought out, literally ice cold. Sent it back, and the seemed to have nuked it because it was rubbery. It was tough to cut, and like chewing on a rubber band. Then my steak was not done to my liking. While most like rare, I just like a little pink, but mine was swimming in blood. As i had just sent my lobster back, i feared retaliation in sending the steak also. The server was nice as he could be, and the mammary comp'ed us a glass of wine. It silk be a while before i can come to grips with this.

Poor service and ordinary food for $140 bucks for 2 at lunch. I ended up ordering the 16oz pepper loin and wanted it medium, came over cooked and I mentioned that to the waitress and all she said was OH am sorry. It was an awe full experience for spending almost 150 bucks at lunch. Never going there again and I will prefer to drive to j Alexanders and enjoying steak there. I felt like they ripped me off.

We got there today around 4 pm. We noticed there were exactly two tables being used. We got to the host stand. Nobody. Wait and wait and wait. Still nobody. Finally, here comes the woman who was doubling as bartender, and after about five minutes of standing there, we finally get seated. As we were eating our meal, we noticed three servers working, one bartender, a bald guy who I'm guessing was manager of some sort, and the chef on duty (not the executive chef, who was off today). The chef on duty came out from time to time to meet with guests, as did the manager. Neither visited our table, and there were no more than three tables being used the entire time we were there. So...with at least six employees on hand, there were two employees for every table. Yet it took us five minutes to get seated. Not good. Not going to mention our server's name, but in what we felt was supposed to be somewhat of a formal, elegant restaurant, he was referring to people as "guys" and "young lady" and "young man." The other two servers were more professional, we noticed. We first ordered drinks. Wife asked for cream with coffee. He forgot the cream. Finally, after another too long wait (where was our server???) we order. And right after we order, he goes to the only other table in the place he is handling and takes their order. We thought, why not take our order back and then take theirs? Would take only a minute. Took what we thought was too long for our food to arrive. When it finally got to the table, our server forgot the mustard sauce that went with one of the steaks. I had to tell him, "Hey, I saw on the internet that this steak comes with mustard sauce." "Oh, yeah, I forgot." I got the kobe beef hamburger for $24. $24 for a hamburger. I really should turn in my "man card" now. Very loosely handpattied and was coming apart. Greasy as heck. Not even close to the best burger in town, which is Tremont Tavern. Fries? Cold and soggy. The baked potatoes our table got "could have been hotter." I had a bite of the pepperloin steak (the house special). It was good but nothing like Ruth's Chris or Stoney River. Forget about the real big boys in the business; they blow Porter's away. Other person at our table got a shrimp and scallops dish that we felt was good. We are big bread people. Without a doubt, the hard rolls were foodservice. Decent -- and they were hot -- but they were nothing special. During all this, we noticed how inattentive our server was. We often needed refills and he was nowhere to be seen. The place isn't that big. Only three tables being occupied. Where is everybody? Where is the manager? Help! Then, as we were still eating, our server takes the bread basket from us, which still had bread in it and which we were still eating. We were so shocked, none of us could say anything. Then he takes my plate with my condiments on it (mustard, mayo, ketchup). I, too, was still eating. We all looked at each other like "What the?" Desert time. He told us the monster cheesecake was not made onsite. We got the creme brule and it was good. Time for the bill. Wouldn't you know it, he runs our bill at the same time he runs the other table he is doing. I guess it would be too much work to make two trips. So both tables had to wait longer for our bills. Two and a half hours later, the experience is finally over. Not even considering price, you can get steaks and other offerings -- as well as service and atmosphere -- better at many other places in town. J. Alexander's and Chop House come to mind. Hennen's. When Ruth's Chris finally opens, that will be the best steak in town. OK, now considering price, Porter's is a total rip-off. It is not nearly worth what you pay here. Even if the service were perfect, which it is not. When you charge this kind of money, you had better be very, very good. Porter's is not. Avoid.

Everything I had here was delicious. When i first sat down they served warm, homemade bread/biscuit hybrids that are way too tasty. Unfortunately if you stuff your face with them, by the time the main course comes you're full. The wine list is good, the service was exceptional and friendly. I would definitely return if I ever come to Chattanooga again.

This may have been one of the best meals I've ever eaten. Crab cakes surpassed my imagination...could actually taste the crab meat, whereas most are just breading. Jalapeño tarter sauce was just what was needed. Had mahi mahi and I still salivate over the tastiness of fresh fish and the cucumber relish. Sides were just as phenomenally tasty.

We came here for a graduation dinner. For appetizer we ordered the sampler that had crab cakes, seared tuna, etc. Everything was really good, especially the tuna. It was not over cooked but seared just right. For dinner I had the meat sampler that came with lamb, peppered steak, and fish. I was really disappointed with this choice. The lamb chops were extremely fatty and overcooked. Glad I didn't get the full order of them, which I debated on. The peppered steak was really peppered. I did not expect to be COVERED SMOTHERED in pepper. There was no taste of the steak since it had so much pepper. Not impressed by my choice. My gf got the large shrimp in a pasta. There was nothing spectacular about this. It almost looked like any meal from Outback. There was limited shrimp and small ones. Not impressed. The service and drinks were really good. maybe they just had a bad day for dinner portions.

Ate here for the first time on a Saturday evening with a LivingSocial certificate ($50). I had messaged a couple days ahead of time (since the gf can't have gluten) to see if there would be some options for her. Teddy (manager I assume) called me back a few hours later asking for more specifics on gluten-free items so I sent him a link with acceptable and unacceptable items which he has since printed out for any future customers with questions about this. He was waiting for us to arrive at our reserved time and we were seated right on time. Started with a house salad. I got port wine vinegairette dressing and gf got garlic vinegairette. Mine was great. She finished all of hers off before I could get a taste of the garlic! We both got an 8oz pepperloin with baked potato. Absolutely incredible. Cooked medium and perfectly. Baked potato also cooked perfectly. Steak is said to marinate for about 3 days and I wouldn't doubt that at all. Great mix of spices and it's the best steak I've had, to date. GF said it would score just 1 point below a porterhouse she has had at Ruth's Chris. Regardless of a certificate or not, you'll be spending some money here. I'm not big on the fancy restaurants, but a couple of times a year is nice, and this definitely will be on the agenda again some day.

My brother-in-law came to visit us and treated us to Porter's, to our surprise! We started out with the calamari. My husband and his brother love the stuff and they said it was cooked great. I liked the spicy tomato sauce that came with it. They both ordered salads and I got a bowl of the French onion soup. They devoured the salads so I didn't get a chance to try them, but the soup was divine! The broth was so rich and flavorful and it had the baked cheese on top and everything. We all ordered steaks, of course. I got the 8 oz filet with a crab cake on top. Everyone's steak was cooked perfectly! This was one of the best steaks I've had in a long time too. None of us had room for dessert after all that but we were impressed with the service and the quality of our food. Would definitely go back when I want a good steak! :)

Porter's is by far my favorite restaurant in Chattanooga. It may be pricey, but is worth every penny. I can't really rate much of the food because I get the same things every time I go: baked chicken and potatoes au gratin. The potatoes are the main reason I go. I'm a cheese fanatic and they make them very cheesy. You will fall in love upon first bite.

Run! Don't walk, away from Porters - Chattanooga. I went there for our 25th Anniversary and can't kick myself hard enough for not checking it out beforehand. Fully expecting an exceptional experience due to the reputation and high dollar menu, we were utterly disappointed with both service and food. Being a Monday, we were immediately seated with no wait. However, the table was set for four and the extra dinnerware was not removed until much later. The host asked us if we would need a wine menu, something that should be assumed. Menus were laminated and dirty. The waitress was more interested in getting our drink order over with, than helping us select an appropriate wine for dinner or telling us any of the special menu items. We ordered the calamari appetizer for starters. It was freezer burned and over cooked. The accompanying marinara sauce was cold. Our salads were mediocre, as well. The Mediterranean Salad lacked three of the main ingredients - tomatoes, cucumber and onions. The Hearts of Romaine Caesar Salad had the Mediterranean's tomatoes. For entries, we ordered the Filet Oscar and Spicy Seafood Plate. The Filet came medium when it was ordered rare. When sliced, it lacked any juice whatsoever. The accompanying crab cake was mostly filler and about the size of a silver dollar. It was presented in the center of the plate. A gigantic baked potato absent-mindedly slapped on the edge of the plate, dwarfed the main entry. The Spicy Seafood Plate was over salted to the point of almost being inedible with the scallops overcooked and tough. Not once did the wait staff ask whether the food was good or if we needed anything. Drinks were empty for long periods. I would expect this type experience at some feed trough restaurant, but not on a bill in excess of $170.

After a long flight from San Francisco by way of Charlotte, NC, I finally arrived at my hotel in Chattanooga, TN. Starved half to death, decided to follow the concierge's advise and visit Porters. It was just at the other end of the hotel lobby. And boy was I happy to have uncovered this jewel. Porter's Steakhouse offers fine dining Chicago-style. They offer and elegant atmosphere with great food and reasonable prices. What I liked most is that their steaks are not full of fancy sauces. What you get is simple, tasty food without a lot of gimmicks. Today I had the Maytag Bleu Cheese Salad consisting of Vine-Ripe Tomatoes, Mesclun Greens, Crumbled Maytag with a Sweet Port Vinaigrette. I followed the salad with Porter's Appetizer. This consisted of Honey Coconut Shrimp, Seared Ahi, Tomato Fresca, and Crab Cakes. The shrimp was perfectly covered with panko and the honey mustard dipping sauce was superb. In the menu, you will find pastas, sea food, chicken and chops and of course steaks. Their beef Is USDA Prime & Cut In-House Selections are served with their Specialty House Mustard Sauce. The chef recommends rare to medium for optimal flavors, Porter cooks their Beef Over A Char-Broiler . Selections are Served A la Carte. Pepperloin is the Chef's Specialty, A Whole Beef Tenderloin Marinated for 48 Hours, Rolled in Cracked Peppercorn and Herb Mixture. I am torn between this and the bone in Fillet Mignon. According to the bar tender it is extremely rare (only two per cow) and very expensive. I will have to come back for more during my stay in Chattanooga.

Based on the reviews, I expected an entirely different experience. And based on the prices, I expected better food. Made a reservation but apparently if you don't know to call ahead and request a special table you get the one in the walkway. So we sat at the bar. Food was pretty good, but I'm not sure they have the right tools to properly cook a steak. Which is just a travesty considering how nice a cut of meat it was. We got the porterhouse rare, but usually when you get a rare steak it should be seared on the outside. Yes, you want a cool, red center, but a sear is crucial. Not sure their grill was hot enough for that to have happened. It was really good meat, so I wish it had been cooked better. Sides were fine -- but Outback's potato is better :) Disappointing experience.

Before coming here I read a few yelp reviews and expected the prices to be much higher than they actually were. Steaks were all in the mid $20 range and cooked to perfection. Had the calamari appitizer which was excellent and split the Cucumber and corn salad with a friend. They spilt the salad in the kitchen and the two plates they brought out looked to be full size protions. Great, classic "Chicago Chop House" atmosphere. My only downside observation was a somewhat stingy pour at the bar. Measured exactly and not free poured which is what I would expect from a chain restaurant. I would definately return!

One of the best steak houses in town. Haven't been since their recent remodel but look forward to doing so soon. Their signature pepper loin is awesome. I even like their mustard sauce that comes with it despite the fact that I don't like mustard.

While staying at the Sheraton Read House I ordered room service from this restaurant. I wasn't super hungry and had recently discovered the wonder that is a "loaded" baked potato in New Orleans so I didn't order much but it was all great nevertheless. I had a loaded baked potato - duh, awesome and ordered the appetizer crab cakes - 2 half dollar sized jewels with chunks of crabmeat and great zestiness. I love crabcakes and these were perfect. Now, the piece de resistance: blueberry croissant bread pudding! So good that the next night I ordered it again, even though I had dinner elsewhere! mmmmmmmmm

Our daughter gave us a Groupon for our Anniversary so we took a late lunch at Porter's. We overlooked making a reservation but didn't mind waiting 30 minutes to be seated. Upon being seated we waited 10 plus minutes for a waiter to ask us if we wanted drinks. Five minutes later I received my Lager Light beer (very light and good beer) but my wife waited another five minutes before a waitress walked by and ask her if she wanted anything to drink. Shirley mentioned she was waiting for a glass of wine. The waitress brought the wine right away. After waiting longer than one would expect to wait, our meal started to arrive. Shirley received her onion soup that could have been a number of degree's warmer. She had to ask for a soup spoon only to have the waiter come back to say all the soup spoons are being washed. What is it with this place I wondered! Shirley unexpectedly received a soup spoon for the luke warm soup. When our meals arrived, I had Shirley's side potato's on my plate, and she still hadn't received the side-bread for her soup which was finished. After a few minutes my delicious onion rings came out and they were the best. Certainly the highlight of my meal. My pulled pork was okay, however, Shirley's chicken sandwich was dry and it appeared they must have run out of the 'sour dough bread' that was on the menu and used white instead. I would have expected water served without asking but Shirley had to ask for water and that's when I discovered my setting was omitted a water glass. In conclusion, while observing the flat appearance of employee's, we were disappointed in the service, and the lack of attention in the meal preparation. No one seemed happy there and the afternoon reflected that.
