Visited this establishment on our way to Knoxville. The restaurant is easy to find with lots of menu options. We tried the steak in a sac and gyro. The meat is well done, grilled onions a nice touch. Sandwich wasn't greasy at all! Gyro came with tomatoes onions and gyro sauce. Meat was well seasoned! We also tried a baklava and it was really good! Very flaky, sweetened with honey. 4 stars because it's good but not the best best I've ever had! Great for a quick meal!

I had the Cuban today and it was pretty good. The onion rings were very good. My wife really liked her falafel sandwich but płans to try the black bean burger next time. The kids were happy with their chicken. Will come back again soon.

My all time favorite sandwich shop. Best in Chattanooga without a doubt! Try the steak in a sack, it's amazing!

I must say this place doesn't look appealing from the outside at first glance. What led me here were my fellow Yelpers. As a vegetarian I ordered the Falafel and boy was I thrown back. The flavor of the falafel is there along with the pita and sauce it comes with. The place itself isn't the nicest, seems to have been a bar/diner half gone but half still there. The staff is friendly just like you would find at a mom and pop diner. Don't expect this to be a fancy sit down place. They have a huge sitting area towards the back that kind of doesn't fit the front part of the place (maybe and old billiard room) but please come right in. Overall for the price and location, Ankar's offers a quick and ready to eat lunch option.

I've been eating here for 30+ years. One of my favorites ever. I don't live in Chattanooga anymore but am sure to stop when I am in town.

Great food! Check out the onion rings on your next visit. They're awesome. Owned and managed by a great family that provides great, personal service. I've been coming here since I was a kid and love this place. A Chattanooga classic that I highly recommend.

The best eastern-style (in-pita versus Greek on-pita) gyros I've ever had anywhere. The crinkle-style fries are still great (I remember when Mr. Ankar was still alive and they were cooked crisper, however). And the local paper proclaimed them as "Lord of the Rings" for their fantastic and huge onion rings. I've been a patron for over 20 of its 30 years, and now that I've moved out of state, it's definitely at the top of my list each time I come back to town. While I rarely deviate from these menu items, my friends also love their steak-in-a-sack, camel riders, Greek salad, humus, hot dogs, and mini-corn dogs.

So, during our trip to Chattanooga, we were craving subs/sandwiches. After doing a search here on Yelp, we ended up choosing Ankar's Hoagies over Jimmy John's. During our lunch, we realized that was a mistake. I ordered the "Steak In a Sac" which was recommended to us by the cashier who said it was the most popular item. It consisted of steak, onions, and cheese that I had added on for $0.55 all inside pita bread. My girlfriend had the "Steak on a Sub" which is pretty much the same as what I ordered, except on a "sub". To be honest, the bread used for the "sub" very much resembled a hot dog bun. Anyways, both were VERY DRY and the flavor was definitely missing. We were very disappointed. I do have to say that the onion rings were actually very good, which a lot the other reviews mention. Also, at the counter they had baklava for sale. (Assorted, 6 pieces in a plastic container sold for $4.99 each) The baklava was also very good!

Ankar's is one of those institutions in Chattanooga. The steak sack is a must. The pita they use is always soft with just the right amount of chew. The hardest part is deciding between onion rings or the fried mushrooms. The falafel and the camel rider are faves, too. Don't go expecting sleek and modern. These guys haven't changed very much since they opened in 1979. And they don't have too! But don't forget the lime supreme. I'm always disappointed when I hit the bottom, because it's gone.

My boyfriend and I both LOVE Ankar's felafel. I order a side of fried mushrooms (with plenty of horseradish) It's a really good place for a quick lunch or dinner. Nothing fancy to look at, no great ambiance. But awesome food, to be sure.

Stopped by because I had seen the place numerous times while driving by. I ordered a turkey sub and it was pretty good but looking back I think I should have gotten the falafel as you can get a turkey sub any where. They did have a unique approach on the sub which was warming the whole sub (maybe steaming) including lettuce and tomato. I'm sure I'll be going back.

Too fatty, greasy for me. The flavor potential was lost.

Great for when you're down for a greasy meal served in disposable receptacles. The falafel is some of the best I've had in the states. Although they put pickles on it - which I thought would be strange - but I think the pickles are what really tie it together! I just wish the pita they put it on wasn't so chewy.

What's not to love? Subs to burgers to fries to awesome onion rings Ankar's Hoagies rocks!

When I first went vegetarian, this place went way up my personal list. It was impossible to get vegetarian food on the go in Chattanooga, unless I wanted to eat a burger king veggie burger on the daily (needless to say, I don't). Ankar's is awesome-they make some killer falafels that fills that fast food niche. They also put some delicious special sauce on it. If you're an onion ring fan, try them here. Perrrrfect.

Passing through town. Stopped here for lunch based on yelp reviews. Order at the counter sandwich restaurant. Pick up you food in styrofoam containers when they call your number. Megan had the falafel sandwich and it was outstanding. Never would have guessed pickles would pull it all together. Good job. I had the white chili. My cup of soup had good flavor but was all broth. I had about seven beans and five small chunks of chicken. We shared some onion rings, which were fine. Most other patrons had their own order of onion rings, but together we could not finish ours because the portion is huge. You can get a mug of Bud Light for a buck sixty nine, a good deal, and although we arrived pre-noon several other customers availed themselves of the opportunity.

The Yelpers who commented before are pretty much right about this place. We came for lunch and was greeted politely and served fairly quickly. The food was pretty good too! We sampled many things because we came here from out of town and wanted to try a lot. The gyro was pretty good. The meat was actual meat, not the steak-um kind. The tzatziki sauce was very good. I just wish it had a little lettuce. Contrary to other opinions, I believe the pita wasn't any more chewy than any other pita I've ever eaten and was fresh and good. The steak sub was good but not outstanding. I enjoyed it but it was slightly plain, not greasy as some other reviewers have said, but that could have been because it was on a hoagie roll and that may have absorbed some of the juices. This was a double edged sword because it was a little dry for my taste. The onion rings were very very good, but not the best I've had. Don't take that as them not being good because I'm kind of an onion ring snob. I will still recommend them. The fried mushrooms were good too. Not overly breaded, not slimy, very tasty. Also recommended. The restaurant houses many tables. They can probably handle a big lunch crowd even though it wasn't super busy when we came. They have a lunch menu and my son liked the hot dog. All in all, though I can't compare it to anyplace else in Chattanooga, I can recommend this place based on other joints I've been to.

my wife and i were in town for a wedding and had no clue of great spots in the area. we turned to yelp and found ankar's. we went and then when her parents came up, we went two more times! we each had a sandwich and shared a combination of appetizers and the bill was less than $100...for all three trips! That also includes 2 pitchers of beer. Great food, the price is unreal, seriously, 6 bucks for a pitcher of beer?? happy hour specials here in DC can't touch 10 bucks, let alone 6. If I'm ever down in Chatanooga again, I know where I'll be eating!

We used to live in Chattanooga and started going there about 30 years ago. We moved to Nashville and still stop by Ankars on our way to Atlanta to see grandkids. I remember our 30 year old daughter sitting in a highchair at Ankar's! The special hoagie, steak in a sack and reuben are all top of our ordering list! Don't forget the homemade onion rings! One order will serve 2 people!! Oh, and the lime supreme is our drink of choice! Ankar's is worth your stop!!

I have grown up going to this restaurant and it is always wonderful. The family is terrific and the food is always delicious. I grew up a strict vegetarian so it was hard to find good places, and Ankar's always had something... of course, as an adult, I then discovered their wonderful cheeseburgers and turkey riders too!

The wife and I went to a nearby sandwich shop from my parents' house and we came about Ankar's. I remember the first time I've eaten there: I was a junior in high school (1995) and my buddies and I would load up in a pickup truck and go down Brainerd Rd to Ankar's. I can't remember what I used to get there but it was always good, especially their baklava! It's the best baklava in the world and it's only $1.10 for a serving! The top is golden blonde and crispy puff pastry and the honey and nuts on the bottom is rich and delicious! By the way, the sandwiches are great as we shared the classic hoagie and gyro. The gyro is the way to go if you're new to Ankar's! Their yogurt sauce is the best! Also, we shared the best order of onion rings I've ever had in my entire life! 4 thumbs way up!!!
