Have been he several times and think the food is great. Friendly staff and reasonably priced. I really like their salsa and chicken, very well marinated and flavorful.

I have been going to this restaurant since it opened and I've enjoyed every visit. I've heard mixed reviews on El Tapatio, but I've never ever had an issue with staff or quality of food with the exception of late at night when the guacamole can be old and brown. The first item we always order is the Nachos Tapatio, which is delicious! I will next order a Seafood Burrito, which is also fantastic. The portions are HUGE, and you'll almost never have to wait for a drink refill!

I came here with my husband and his parents (they live about 30 miles from Yankton) on our last vacation. Very very good food! In my town I have 3 excellent Mexican restaurants to compare with, and I'm originally from Southern California, so I didn't expect it to be as good as it was. On this trip through, just last week, we had the Parrilladas, the Cielo, Mar y Tierra variety. (Sky, Sea and Land referring to Cornish hen, shrimp, and skirt steak) It was great. The only thing missing was a variety of sauces and salsa for the meal. We didn't ask though; it was quite good with just the salsa that came with the chips. It's a bit milder on the spice meter than I'm used to but hey this is the farm belt and many folks in that area are not used to hot pepper.

I think I have to give 5 stars to El Tapatio in Yankton. The Mexican cooking is above par for this area, and features great salsa (maybe could be a little spicier but very flavorful!), yummy chili rellenos, tasty tamales, great guacamole, and fresh chips. The atmosphere is fiesta-like and the wait staff very friendly! Muy bien!

Never expected to find a Mexican restaurant this good in South Dakota much less than Yankton. Really good. Not your commercial type Mexican. Real good and fresh. We were presently surprised.

What a find! A great little Mexican restaurant in Yankton, South Dakota. We were sooo hungry after the drive up from St. Louis, Missouri...it was long and beautiful but by the time we pulled into Yankton, we needed sustenance of the most filling kind. The tostadas de ceviche were perfectly tart and nourishing with diced shrimp, onions, tomatoes, and cilantro...piquante! The vegetarian enchilada was rich with cheese, black beans and rice - and really satisfied. The waitstaff was very kind, quick, and helpful with the order. What a pretty cheerful restaurant with gorgeous brightly painted chairs. Absolutely a gem in a fun small town...

Eat here all the time! Best Mexican in town! Fast service and the staff is very friendly. The Molcajete is delicious and more than enough for two people to share. Also like their tamales and chile rellenos. Everything has been great!

Attractive, clean atmosphere, food quality, presentation and portions OVER THE TOP however I like my margaritas classic which is tart and strong. This is critical to my review. This was not the case with the 20 oz tumbler they offer. Not cost effective either. In the future I'll be grateful to order TO GO and make my own Margi! My server Paul was WONDERFUL! I tipped him accordingly.

Our family stopped here on our way to Mitchell South Dakota as we were stopping in Mitchell for the night before driving onto the Black Hills for our family vacation. This was on Thursday March 13th. It was one of two Mexican Restaurants that received 4 Star ratings here on Yelp and we were hungry after driving for three hours roughly. Our server quickly took our order and we received our food quite quickly as well. I ordered the "Burrito de Carnitas De Res" which I thought was a pork dish as carnitas usually is a pork dish. This dish was actually made with sirloin strips with onion, green peppers, served with a green sauce and topped with melted cheese. The burrito was served with Mexican/Spanish rice and of course frijoles plus a nice tasty Mexican cole slaw. Even with the disappointment of not being a pork dish, the burrito was quite tasty and I enjoyed it a lot. Plenty of meat inside, the peppers and onions were caramelized well and there was plenty of melted cheese that I believe was Monterey Jack. Overall the meal was quite tasty and the slaw was pretty tasty too. My wife had the enchilada rancheras and was quite happy with her meal as well. Our children had nachos and a chicken quesadilla and they were quite happy as well. I am usually quite biased when it comes to good Mexican food having lived in Southern California for 18 plus years (with 10 years in San Diego) and have many taken trips into Tijuana Mexico and I was very pleasantly surprised by El Tapatio. Definitely will be a spot to stop when traveling through Yankton on our way to or from the Black Hills. Quite tasty food and definitely worth the stop.

I love this place!! The food is consistently delicious and the staff make you feel like family. Immaculately clean with timely service. I prefer it greatly over the other sit down Mexican restaurant in Yankton. No comparison!!

My favorite Mexican restaurant! Food is always delicious, cups never run empty and the atmosphere is very fun. One of the only places in this part of the world that serves ceviche. I particularly enjoy the seafood here, and have never been disappointed in 6+ visits.

Haven't had a bad meal here, yet. Great salsa and chips and I LOVE their guacamole. Everything I have tried, from the chimichungas to the fajitas to the flan, has been good.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
