We were told everything was homemade from scratch, but that couldn't be the case. We're from San Diego, and you don't serve white rice with Mexican food. Re-fried beans were definitely from a can and the "Franks Hot Sauce" tasted like enchilada sauce mixed with Tabasco and served in a dish, not the original bottle. Average at best and over-priced as well. 4 diners with different meals and nothing impressive about any of it. It was convenient to the hotel, but we didn't return for another meal. Go to the Powder House, you won't be disappointed, only a 5 minute drive away.

The food came out cold, but the service was awesome.... Two young ladies working so hard to make sure everything is good.

Keep looking! Just about anywhere has got to be better! Smoked chicken had an odd texture and was very pink inside. My husband ordered the Burrito. What a mistake... The burrito was covered in Cheese Whiz ( yes, seriously) and was accompanied with canned refried beans and white rice with melted cheese on top. The waitress was surly, and seemed confused even with the drink order. All in all, this place sucks!

Food was mediocre, which is why I rated this a three. What was more disappointing was that my family and I left one of our shopping bags there with some local taffy and some trinkets after shopping around Keystone. Not even a few hours later did we realize we left our bag there so we went to go get it. The staff were persistent in saying that they didn't have the bag. After our own persistence they realized they did have the bag. We got our things back only to realize that half the taffy was returned and they opened the other packages that held our trinkets. I guess they don't have a 24 or so hour policy on lost packages?

Was very happy with our meal and service for our family of four. Indoor or outdoor seating and large menu selection (including kids meals). After reading poor reviews on yelp we almost went somewhere else, but decided to give it a try and glad we did. Ribs were very good!

! They smoke meat. Best smoked prime rib I've had! I My wife & I loved this great place in Keystone. Having never been to South Dakota I did not know what to expect. We actually walked past this place and went up the street but something about it drew us back to go there. Up stair on an outdoor covered deck is the family friending dining area. I saw families go up and we decide the bar might be better. Looking in the open door to the bar my wife realized we could eat, drink, and smoke if we sat outside under the front awning. They have around 6 or 7 tables and a two sided bar, and there was a couple open tables at that time. Our waiter was friendly, quick and attentive, even as all the tables filled up. My wife had Randy's Famous ribs. We didn't know Randy or why they were famous but they were awesome! I know because she couldn't finish the whole slab I got some too. If you like Prime Rib, you're going to love having smoked prime rib. BarLee's is by far the BEST prime rib I've ever had. I've had prime rib at some great steak houses... but cooking it on the smoker blows every other prime rib I've ever eaten out of the water.I was presented with a perfectly cooked prime rib cut, smoked to a heavenly finish. The smoke was the only marinade this steak needed but they did provide au jus and a creamy horseradish sauce. The notable surprise was the lack of visible extra fat and marbling that I so-enjoy in this cut of meat; but the quality of the beef was none the less fantastic! They chef must have trimmed it well. I will recommend this place to any and all visitors to Keystone, South Dakota. An added note: Standing at the outdoor bar with what appeared to be iced tea, was a man who my wife said looked familiar. While we were being served our drinks he came over and welcomed us. He said he was the handyman of the place. During the course of the dinner, he walked by from time to time and our conversations continued only to find out that his name was Randy and his wife owned the place. By dinner's end we were laughing & joking with him, so we had our picture taken by the waiter. Before we left Brenda came out and Randy introduced us all. The sun went down and karaoke was about to start in the bar as we said so long to the Petersons and a great place.

A great local spot in route to Mount Rushmore and a great discovery to say the least. My coworkers and I were looking for a place where they served buffalo. And this place didn't fail to satisfy the craving for some buffalo. Would recommend having Joey as your waiter as he took care of all of orders and did it with a smile. Order the buffalo burger or grilled chicken burger, both are very delicious and you won't be disappointed. The buffalo was very tender and satisfying.

One of the few options open during our visit the first weekend in May- on my servers advice I went with the smoked chicken , and was glad, as a fellow behind me sent his steak back. I think the owners try hard and the guy runs the smoker, not the grill. A bar with food, and mine was solid.

Good local bar with a friendly atmosphere that will make you feel very welcome and be bound to bring you some insider knowledge of the area. Don't bother with the good though.

They were understaffed but they hustled. My burger was good. The bacon on it was awesome ( real maple bacon- I think). My son gave the hotdog an A- (he is 10). My daughter gave her cheese burger a B (she is 7). My little guy gave his grilled cheese an A+ (he is 5).

This place is awesome!!! It's the only place open in the off season, and the bartender Ellie is amazing and the owner Brenda is super personable!!! We didn't eat but they serve great drinks with a friendly attitude which was welcomed after a 9 hour drive!!

I don't hand out many 1 or two stars, so take this seriously....don't do it. We should have known the place wasn't good because when we walked in, there was literally only one other couple in the joint (and it was a big room). It was around 8pm and remember, the location of this resteraunt is in a pretty busy area of town. The service was excellent but the food was disgusting. We tried to order Buffalo Burgers, but they were out of them. I ordered a BLT that had two small slices of bacon. And, to make matters worse, there were spiders and on the window sill where we were sitting. I would not recommend this to anyone.

Never. Never . Never eat here.. They serve food off the floor.. I would never kid you about this.. We were here with a party of 8 and my friend order the ribs.. Saw them drop them on the floor and 30 secs later they served them the ones that hit the floor.. The manger said they threw them is the trash.. I said show them to me.. She said no.. What do you think??? Yep re-served them..

Half of the items on the menu were unavailable. The service was just ok. Food was meh. There are better places in town to go spend your money.

Stopped here with the family after a trip to visit the Dead Presidents. A lot of the businesses were not yet open so we choose Barlee's over a Mexican joint. I had a hot dog, the husband and mom had the Buffalo burger and sis had the veggie wrap. My hot dog was fine - there's not much you can do to goof up a dog. Mom and M liked their burgers well enough. Sis loved the veggie wrap and I did agree it was pretty good. We also ordered fried pickles. Giant serving and good but way too much food for us in the end! Nice, friendly service and prices were fairly cheap. Is this a stellar dining experience? No, but it's not as bad as some of the other reviews make it out to be.

Ordered a couple of burgers medium. Mine was ok but my wife's was pretty raw. Asked for BBQ sauce which they forgot. The burger that was done correctly was good though and so were the fries.

From what I read, service & food quality at Barlee's varies. My experience was A-OK. This is a family owned, small business operated by Brenda and Randy. If you want a 5-Star dining experience get back in the plane. You're in the wrong State. If you wish to support a small business then these folks deserve it. We'll be back the next time we're in the Black Hills. If everything was consistent life would be boring. p.s. drink prices were inexpensive compared to most tourist areas.

Not a recommended place to eat, unless you want to observe a mismanaged rude wait staff while waiting an exorbitantly long time for at best mediocre food. The wait wasn't even during the dinner rush. My mother's sirlon had no flavor, was tough and as an Argentine she was displeased, so when the server asked if she wanted something else my mother opted for a buffalo burger instead. We set the almost untouched Sirlon to the edge of the table, however the server didn't appear again until about 30 minutes later with the burger and lukewarm fries (which are advertised as "fresh cut", however are just frozen). The burger was fair. While the rest of us waited for my mother to finish, no one except the bus boy came by to check how things were. We all would have liked a refill on our drinks, yet it was about another 45 minutes after that we finally received our bill and imagine my surprise when I saw that we were charged for the Sirlon. I went to the host station to ask for a manager and the male server there did go and attempted to retrieve her. I could see into the kitchen and she seemed perturbed, yet she came out with a dessert and stated "I have to run this out to a customer" as if I wasn't a customer. While I waited for the manager to return my server came to the station and began to argue with me and defend the charge, I was incredulous and just stated that I wasn't going to pay for it. Eventually the manager returned and agreed to remove the charge, albeit reluctantly. Overall the one star is because the restaurant wasn't filthy, but the female restroom was and in a state of disrepair.

John Taffer (Bar Rescue) needs to pay a visit to this place! Actually, there were no real complaints about the food; about what our party of 8 would expect from a place like this in a tourist town. However, as the waitress was bringing our tray of food out, she dropped the ribs someone in our party ordered, off the plate/tray and onto the floor. She picked the ribs up and went back into the kitchen and was back out with our tray of food, including the ribs, within 30 seconds. At this point, we were sure she picked them up and brushed them with some more bbq sauce to cover the evidence and put them back on the plate. We asked to speak to the owner (I believe her name is Bernadette) and asked her how long it took to make the ribs if we were to order them right now and she replied that it would take approximately 15 minutes. We then explained what happened and she started rolling her eyes and getting seriously defensive, saying that those ribs were for another table and were thrown away. My boyfriend asked if he could walk back in the kitchen and see them in the trash can and she said no and stormed off. One of the members of our party had a view of the kitchen and could see that she was standing near the warmer, not the trashcan, in the kitchen and she was screaming at the staff to find the ribs that were in the trash. She then wheeled the trashcan out and showed us some ribs in the trash. Mind you, we were being very nice in our delivery of our complaint and she was just plain rude and nasty! My boyfriend then said he would accept that and proceeded to tell her that she did not handle the situation well and she needed to work on her customer service skills. She continued to get nastier and more defensive! It was about 10 pm, and I decided to do a walk around to see if any other customers were eating as if it was their ribs, they should still be eating them. There were no other customers in the entire place who were eating or even had the remnants of having eaten on their table. My boyfriend and I then walked outside and were talking and she and her husband Randy, come up the outside stairs to confront us. I didn't mention previously that the waitress said the owner was sitting in the bar when we asked for her and seemed scared to have to go interrupt her party. When Randy & Bernadette got up to us, he was so drunk he could barely stand or speak. He then proceeded to slur "we don't do anything honest here...I mean dishonest". Seriously!!! Then they stumbled away. They proceeded to give us dirty looks for the remainder of the evening. Unfortunately, even John Taffer can't fix stupid, and I'm pretty sure this place will be closed when we return next year! Also, our waitress was sweet, but to say she was clueless would be an understatement. Another guest in our party ordered red bull & vodka. I have never seen so much confusion over a simple drink in my life! She brought jeager bombs, and then when they told her what they wanted, she was so totally confused and had to come back to the table at least 4 times to clarify. Unbelievable!

Good food. Friendly servers and owners. Not sure just what everyone else is expecting. It is great food for a bar. It isn't a steakhouse people. It is a bar with good food. And they are open off season!

I'm not sure why we ate lunch in Keystone, perhaps just for the novelty of it, but this is the type of "town" that I try to avoid at all costs. I suppose I wasn't expecting much, which is good. We wanted somewhere to sit outside in the sun and this was the place we chose. It was the emptiest place in the whole area. I assumed it was because it was on the far end, and seemed too dive for the majority of families. We did get a table outside in the sun, although everything seemed to be a bit dusty and dirty. I'm not the type who cares, though. It was a dive bar, and dive bars should be dirty and grungy. I can't review anything about the inside, or the upstairs. The food was actually pretty good. We shared a pulled pork sandwich and a buffalo burger, both of which had great flavor. The pulled pork was large chunks of pork - different from the shredded pork that you normally see, and it was dredged in delicious sauce. The burger was a burger, but the flavor seemed just fine. I put some Heinz 57 on it to add some kick. The fries, however, I didn't find that great. They were limp and had an odd taste - either freezer burn, or old cooking oil. But I ate them all because in the end they were just fries. The service was nothing to write home about. We had the most awkward server who seemed to be only half there. He tried to make some jokes which just ended up being uncomfortable and mildly insulting instead of funny, and every time he came by it was just, well, awkward. He forgot three requests relating to our drinks, but amended them as soon as we told him. He wasn't horrible, but it was somewhat uncomfortable every time he came around. After our meal another man (a manager I assume) asked us how we enjoyed everything, which is always a nice touch. I would rate the food 3 stars, but I have to give an overall 2 stars based on the fact that, even if I was in town, I would probably never go back. Eat upstairs in the restaurant rather than at the bar. When we popped in there to ask about seating the hostess was very nice. The waitress who brought our food from there was also quite nice. PS One more plus - there was live music. A country cover band. They weren't great, but they covered some fantastic songs from my childhood, so it was entertaining.

Went upstairs for lunch and dinner. The French fries are better than the homemade potato chips. Beer is cold and delicious. Smoked chicken is very tasty.

When we called ahead to find out if they could take a group of 12 people, the man that answered told us that their covered patio was full and we'd have to sit separately in the sun. When we arrived, their patio had all but two tables opened. Only 2 minutes after we made the call. The waitress was nice and seemed to do her best. She did lose the first 5 orders we made. We got our appetizer approximately 45 minutes later and it was terrible. We had the sampler platter. WARNING: DO NOT ORDER THE FRIED CHEESE. It was mostly breading, and soggy at that. When we got our main courses, 60 minutes after we ordered, the burger was over cooked and one of the orders was still forgotten, so we canceled it. The fish and chips were pretty good, as was the linguini. This place was slow at dinner time, in the peak tourist season. That should've been a sign. All of these problems and they weren't even busy.

Stopped for a late lunch. Food was good. Not great, but not bad. Service was not piss poor, but far from good. Veggie Wrap was really good. Buffalo Burger was good, but nothing special. Kids Chicken Strips were made of real chicken which was good. Patty Melt was sent out without the grilled onions. The waitress had no knowledge of the food items on the menu and did not offer to correct the problem with the Patty Melt, and basically threw the check on the table as she passed by. No tip for you! Worth giving it a shot, just don't expect too much.

Hmm. Mixed story. Overcooked Baby Back Ribs, inedible and expensive, served with enthusiasm but missing the sides I ordered. Steak Fajitias ordered by my wife was enjoyed, and was freshly cooked but was again missing side dishes she ordered. The meal highlight of this and regrettably too many meals in this town was the Fat Tire beer. Sad really, it may the seasonal thing, or maybe it's just amateur hour. Can't recommend this.

We stopped here on our way from Mt Rushmore back to Spearfish. No clue what the inside offers as we sat up on the outside deck. We were the only ones there most of the time but it was between lunch and dinner. Hubby had a burger and fries. He said the burger was fine but the fries were not warm enough. I ordered an Indian Taco and it was excellent. Different spices and NO beans of any kind which is a-ok with me. The sour cream and pico were "on the side" and the waitress was kind enough to offer more if you wanted. The taco surprised me with tiny pieces of chili in the topping but just enough to add some flavor and not overpowering at all. Staff was very nice. I would eat there again.

FLIES! This place has a vast majority of the flies in South Dakota. We ate at the bar and the fly tape was covered with dead flies. I can appreciate the attempt to control the problem but they should be removed once filled 3 deep. Food wasn't that bad but the flies and thoughts of a kitchen covered in flies made it hard to stomach. The service was good. We had a large group of demanding children and the waiter was very accommodating. But ohhh the FLIES----GrooooSSS

Stopped by a drink in the bar and the bartender told us how awesome the steak and ribs there, so we returned at dinner to try them out. First clue that we were in for trouble, was the empty dining room. The wait staff were friendly, but that turned out to be the only good thing. Hubbie and I ordered the full rack of ribs which were to come with 2 sides (homemade slaw, baked beans or potato salad). He got a house salad, which when delivered to the table was still encased in plastic wrap (so much for being fresh). My rack of ribs were cold in the middle and were like jerky. Hubbies ribs looked better than mine, but were also dried out and tough. When paying on way out, I mentioned to the cashier that the food was really bad, and she lauched into the, "well I don't make the food, blah, blah, blah." I told her that I was just giving her feedback and she should pass it on to the cooks or maybe even the owner, being he's supposedly the rib expert. Pretty bad, but hurt even worse to pay $65 for it!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
